Mikes letter Welcome to this weeks magazine. Its hard to believe we have been running this magazine for 18 weeks now alongside our printed monthly magazines. I guess time does really fly when your having fun doesn’t it! Its staggering to think that next month sees our 8th Birthday in the business of delivering local news to Bristol. Its quiet funny how time flies and the same goes for the current circumstances we are in at the moment with the economy and the imminent recession that coming. I really do feel for the people that are about to lose their jobs at no fault of there own. But to look on the bright side when one door closes another one opens and we forget the small amount of time we are in pain. I really can’t remember anything about the last recession a few years ago nor can I remember such a testing time we are about to enter. Lets hope team Johnson has a better plan in place to get the economy running better than the one his current Chancellor of the exchequer has just released. Anyway I hope the other sectors get a break very soon as I could do with good session at the gym and my nails need doing too they are shocking lol!

Hoteliers say VAT cut is a welcome boost Hoteliers in Bristol have welcomed a temporary cut in VAT for the hospitality sector, saying it’s lower than they expected. The Bristol Hoteliers Association has, for some time, been calling on the Government to cut VAT in this sector from 20% to 15%. But Chancellor Rishi Sunak today announced a temporary cut on VAT applied to tourism and hospitality related activities from 20% to 5% until January 2021. Hoteliers in Bristol have welcomed this temporary boost to help get their businesses back up and running as COVID-19 lockdown restrictions continue to be lifted. Raphael Herzog, Chair of the Bristol Hoteliers Association, said: “The measures outlined in the Chancellor’s speech today were very welcome. “We had very much hoped for a VAT-cut but did not expect it to be dropped so low. “We are looking forward to seeing more details about the eat-out incentives that the Chancellor announced.
“The scheme which provides a £1,000 bonus job retention bonus to businesses who are bringing people out of furlough will also be a significant boost to our members. “Overall, we felt that the measures announced by the Chancellor today were positive and are welcomed by the BHA.” Some of Bristol’s hotels re-opened on 4 July, as they were allowed to, while others are finalising arrangements to ensure they are COVD-19 safe before re-opening in the coming weeks. Mr Herzog added: “Many, many, people – those who have been confined to their homes for many weeks as well as others who have been working flat-out during the crisis – will feel that they want, need and deserve a break. “We are all working hard to ensure that our hotels are as safe as possible and look forward to welcoming people back. “We hope people have the confidence now to come and enjoy some well-deserved staycations at our hotels.” The Bristol Hoteliers Association represents 40 major hotels in the city, with around 4,000 rooms. Hotels put an estimated £200 million into the local economy.

Sky Orchestra A New Dawn for Bristol
•
Hot air balloons perform musical dawn chorus to serenade the public
•
New music specially commissioned and performed by Bristol musicians
•
Event scheduled to take place later in July
A massive musical dawn chorus is planned to take place in Bristol his month, delivered from the sky directly to people's homes from a flotilla of seven hot air balloons with speakers attached.
Sky Orchestra was first performed in the city at the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in 2003, and in 2011 flew across the Capital for the London Olympics 2012.
Serenading people in their homes with specially commissioned new music, the Sky Orchestra is planned to offer people hope for the future and showcase the creative talent of the city.
“As the city begins to unlock, I wanted a way to deliver an uplifting experience to people in their homes. Something spectacular, yet somehow intimate; to create a sense of renewal, hope and rebirth, to raise the public’s spirits and mark a moment in time” says Luke, who is well known for artworks such as Museum of the Moon, Play Me I’m Yours and Park and Slide.
Sky Orchestra - A New Dawn for Bristol is an arts project by renowned international Bristol artist Luke Jerram and Bristol-based BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones. It features the premiere of a new composition commissioned by Bristol Old Vic, featuring musicians from around the city. Seven hot air balloons, each with speakers attached to its basket, will deliver the instrumental dawn chorus from the sky to create an uplifting visual and musical experience in surround sound directly to people in their homes.
6
Dan Jones who is co-creating the new score said: “We’re bringing together some of Bristol’s most successful musicians with future creators who are just emerging; Bristol continues to be a launchpad for musical innovation that spreads right around the world. This has been a great opportunity for all of us to thank Bristol as a continued source of inspiration.”
Hot air balloon flotillas have not been seen over the city since the lockdown, so the Sky Orchestra will provide a welcome return to our city skyline. With seven hot air balloons positioned over a city, this makes it one of the largest surround sound artworks in the world. Planned by Luke and Dan since the beginning of the lockdown, the seven local ballooning crews are being brought together by lead pilot Peter Dalby. The performance has only just been made possible as social distancing restrictions have been relaxed to allow pilots and crews to work together safely. To avoid public crowds turning up to watch the launch, the dates and times of the performance are a secret. The performance will be announced on the day, just as the balloons take off.
Tom Morris from Bristol Old Vic said: "All of Bristol is a theatre and the safest performance space in the world is the sky. Bristol Old Vic may be closed, for now, but the ears and eyes and hearts of all Bristolians are not and the need for inspiring work by our most extraordinary artists is greater than ever under the effect of the pandemic. We are thrilled to be able to collaborate with Luke and Dan and a host of Bristolian musicians on this wonderful project, their gift to the city during lock down. May it bring hope and delight to all who see and hear it." Sky Orchestra - A New Dawn for Bristol is taking place with kind permission from Bristol City Council, within social distancing guidelines.

Latest face mask rules from the major supermarkets
With wearing a face mask now a mandatory practice in hospitals and on public transport, you may be wondering whether that's the case for supermarkets too. A National paper reports that while you're not legally required to wear a covering in shops, most supermarkets have been told they can impose them if they feel it's necessary. As lockdown eases across the country, many supermarkets have therefore updated their guidelines on face coverings. With that in mind, We have the latest advice from popular UK supermarkets, including Asda, Tesco Aldi and Sainsbury's.
Aldi staff have been offered to wear masks in stores and customers are able to wear coverings at their discretion too. A statement from the retailer said: “Aldi will be providing the option of face masks to all its store-based colleagues to further support their safety as they continue to feed the nation.
This move is in addition to the previously announced provision of gloves and clear screens that are being installed at more than 7,000 checkouts. “Colleagues can also now access the Government’s Covid-19 testing programme for critical workers Sainsbury's has masks available for all colleagues Asda says it’s up to staffs discretion and customers but it is not a mandatory to wear one in store. to choose whether to wear face masks in stores. Candidate for the Empty Plinth
Brislington’s Candidate for the Empty Plinth
Bristolians may be surprised to learn that there are only two statues of women across the whole of Bristol. There are in fact more statues of animals than women! The most famous one is of course Queen Victoria on College Green, which was erected in 1888.
The second, less well-known one is of Amelia Edwards, (1831-92), a successful novelist and travel writer, who used her fame to promote votes for women. A charming statuette of Amelia, sitting on four of her books, has been set into the wall of Amelia Court flats, on the corner of Henleaze and Eastfield Road.
Portrait of Hannah More by H. W. Pickersgill (1821) This year is the 275th anniversary of the birth of Hannah More. Born in Fishponds in 1745, Hannah More went on to become one of the most influential women of her day.
Her father was a school teacher and set up two schools in Bristol, one for girls and one for boys. As a young adult, Hannah taught at the girls' school. At the age of 22, Hannah became engaged to William Turner, owner of the Belmont Estate near Tyntesfield, but the relationship was not a happy one and after six years Turner eventually called it off, offering Hannah £200 a year as compensation. This sizeable income allowed her to be a woman of independent means, at a time when women rarely were, and left her free to pursue her career. During her life Hannah More became a celebrated poet and playwright. She was also a campaigner for social reform, female education and the abolition of slavery. In fact, she was a member of a group of prominent campaigners against the slave trade that included William Wilberforce. She set up twelve schools in the Mendip area including her first one at Keeper’s Cottage on Brislington Hill. Today, there are still several schools in the Bristol area named after her. Cllr. Tony Carey and Cllr. Jos Clark visit Hannah More’s first school, known as Keeper’s Cottage, Brislington Hill.
Just two statues of women is unacceptable and we urgently need to redress the balance, preferably with statues of women with strong connections to Bristol. We would like to nominate Bristol-born Hannah More.
12
Hannah More died at her home in Clifton in 1833 at the grand old age of 88 and is buried in Wrington, North Somerset. We believe she would be a very worthy contender for the now vacant plinth in the centre of the city. Bristol comes together to tackle graffiti during lockdown A partnership between Bristol City Council, Bristol Waste and the city centre’s Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) has been busy removing graffiti – making the most of the quieter streets since the start of the coronavirus lockdown.
Steve Bluff, manager of the Broadmead BID said: “Graffiti removal is a key priority for the businesses within Broadmead BID and we get a great service from the team at Bristol Waste who always respond quickly and effectively to deal with the issues.”
Since March, the joint clean-up operation has identified, cleaned and cleared more than 1,000 graffiti which have defaced walls, buildings and bollards in historic parts of Bristol’s Old City.
Work will continue across the city as part of the Mayor’s Clean Streets ‘Big Tidy’ to reduce graffiti.
This joint effort to improve our city has been welcomed by the cabinet member with responsibility for waste, Councillor Steve Pearce. He said: “Crew members from Bristol Waste have worked under difficult circumstances during the pandemic and this is shown by the vast amount of graffiti removed from historic parts of our city. “This is a huge part of the work being done to create a cleaner and more welcoming city and will hopefully make a lasting impression as people return to work and visit Bristol once again. “Spraying or painting graffiti on property without permission is illegal, unacceptable and an eyesore. We will continue to work with Bristol Waste to help businesses maintain and build on the progress that has been made throughout the city centre and further afield.” Keith Rundle, Operations Director for Bristol City Centre BID said: “It has been great to work closely with colleagues from Bristol Waste and the council to make such a significant change in how the city looks as it begins to emerge from lockdown. “Safely reopening our city is a major priority for us, along with a range of initiatives to improve the welcome, look and feel as people continue to return.”
16
Dan Kelly, Deputy Operations Director at Bristol Waste, said: “Our dedicated crew of Big Tidy street cleansers has worked tirelessly alongside their colleagues throughout the crisis to make our streets cleaner, greener and safer for everyone to enjoy. Our aim is to create lasting change in these areas by working together with community groups, the council parks department and the Neighbourhood Enforcement Team. “Thanks to the hard work of everyone involved in the Big Tidy since it began last October, hundreds of streets have been visibly improved, many miles of footpaths have been cleared and over 2,000 graffiti have been removed from walls, bridges, benches and bollards." Graffiti on property of any kind without permission of the owner is against the law and those caught can be fined up to £150. If you notice someone leaving graffiti in your area, report it to the police by dialling 101. To report graffiti on your property or in your area, please visit the ‘Report graffiti’ page on the council’s website.

Charities join forces to understand how COVID-19 affects people with type 1 diabetes Kathleen Gillespie, Professor of Molecular Whilst risk of death from COVID-19 is low, for people with and without type 1 diabetes, NHS figures nonetheless show the risk is higher for those with the condition.
Medicine at the University of Bristol, said: "Although we know that people with type 1 diabetes are at greater risk if they develop COVID-19, we know very little about how this translates to people’s experiences of the pandemic.
Scientists don’t know how many people with type 1 have had coronavirus and recovered, obscuring the full impact that the virus is having on the UK’s 400,000 people with type 1.
"With this research, we hope to get a much clearer idea of how the type 1 diabetes community has been affected by coronavirus, and how they can be kept safe and well in future."
Now, JDRF and Diabetes UK will co-fund Professor Kathleen Gillespie, at the University of Bristol, to find out. Professor Gillespie's team will work with a research group in Milan that has developed a test that can detect coronavirus antibodies in a small sample of blood – small enough to be collected via post. By offering this test to around 5,000 people participating in ongoing studies of type 1 diabetes (the Bart’s Oxford study and UK TrialNet), Professor Gillespie will be able to estimate how many people contracted coronavirus.
Rachel Connor, Director of Research Partnerships at JDRF, said: "Everyone with type 1 diabetes is different, and Professor Gillespie’s work will shed some much-needed light on the individual experiences behind the statistics.
She will also ask participants to share their experiences of COVID-19 and lockdown – including whether they have been shielding, if they have had any COVID-19 symptoms, and how their blood glucose levels have reacted. With this information, Professor Gillespie will be able to see how the type 1 diabetes community has been hit by COVID-19. This will give scientists and clinicians a clearer idea of the risk that coronavirus poses to people with type 1, enabling healthcare teams to better support and protect people with the condition.
18
"We’re hopeful that with this information, policymakers and healthcare teams will be able to give people with type 1 diabetes the advice and support they need." Dr Elizabeth Robertson, Director of Research at Diabetes UK, said: "There's never an easy time to live with diabetes, but the COVID-19 pandemic presents particular challenges for people with type 1. It is vital that we understand how having COVID-19, as well as living in lockdown, affects people with type 1 diabetes so that we can provide them with the best advice and care during this difficult time and in the future. "We're delighted to join forces with JDRF to fund Professor Gillespie's research, which will help us to do this by giving important insights into the experiences of people with type 1 diabetes during the pandemic."

One25 works with vulnerable women across Bristol. We have drop-in and a van outreach services to work with and engage women who street sex work and a programme of work called Peony for women moving away from sex work and vulnerability. Our Pause Bristol programme works with women recovering from the trauma of having children permanently removed, supporting them to break the cycle of birth and removal. One25 celebrates 25 years of supporting women to change their lives in 2020 and has been an integral part of the emergency response group meeting to discuss domestic abuse throughout lockdown. When Covid-19 emerged, we considered the extreme vulnerabilities of our women and, in the knowledge that they often having nothing and no-one in their lives, decided to stay open during lockdown. The team transformed their work to an outreach service, dropping food and essentials to women and offering a phone and service for one to one. For group work we have been able to offer yoga and wellbeing Zooms which women have engaged in. The trust we build with women is best done face-to-face, so this has been very challenging but the women have responded well. Some have written anonymous postcards to each other with messages of support which we have put in their food parcels. As one of our clients said: “I didn’t realise how much I needed drop-in until I couldn’t come in (because of COVID). Drop-in is amazing, and all of you are amazing.” In the first seven weeks of lockdown we helped 18 homeless women get into safe housing, supported four women onto a script, delivered over 300 food bags, handed out 33 mobile phones and welcomed 32 women to our van, 96 times. By maintaining our scripting service, we have been able to support women to reduce their dependence on drugs. We have also been able to organise contraception for the women in the Pause programme.
20
Since lockdown has eased, we have been undertaking socially distanced walks with women. This week we open our doors to the women again and are so pleased to see them back. We will maintain some of the Zoom groups and ensure all services are carefully thought through to keep women, volunteers and staff safe. We know that there are many unsolved issues around domestic abuse including quick access to somewhere safe to stay and even access to a phone to get support. During lockdown, women have returned to or were locked down with abusive partners, or they have felt unable to leave. We also believe that some women thought services were shut and so have put off reaching out for support. As Bristol unlocks we are going to face unmet need and an increased demand for services, as well as responding to worsened abuse and the impact on mental health. One25 welcomes the Mayoral Commission on Domestic Abuse, as it will bring together committed partners in an informed approach to find solutions for the needs of people experiencing abuse. We know from involvement in Bristol One City that it is all about putting the issues of the city first and working together to find what is best for Bristol and its residents. Members of the commission will meet over the summer to form recommendations for how the city can prevent domestic abuse and support survivors, with the findings to be shared in the autumn. If you want to support the work of One25, please visit our website https://one25.org.uk/ or contact us on social media, on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

Anyone for Cricket
The traditional summer game of cricket will be allowed once again from Saturday (July11) and there will be celebrations in villages around Bristol, although the game will now be played under strict Covid-19 guidelines from the England Cricket Board. Nowhere will the return of the game be more welcome than Congresbury, just south of Bristol on the A370, where this will be the 176th year of village cricket. In their first game back a Congresbury 1st XI will entertain a Weston-super-Mare CC team at the King George V Playing Field, the following weekend they will have a return fixture in Weston. Last May the two teams opened the season with a similar friendly and the two skippers - Justin Yau (Cong) and Chris Davidson (pictured) studied a scorebook from May 17, 1919 when in the first match after World War 1 the two teams played each other. Local historian and author Clive Burlton said: “There is the same feel about this weekend’s game. Cricket coming back after a time of great difficulty for everyone. It is another historic step in the history of village cricket. Clive wrote a book celebrating 175 years of village cricket, which opened up a window on life in Somerset through the Victorian and Edwardian eras to the present day.
The book, published by Congresbury Cricket Club in association with Congresbury History Group, tells much more than the story of cricket in the village over the generations. “The more research I did, the more people I spoke to, the more I realised how the fabric of village life and the development of cricket were intertwined,” said Clive. The book, with 112 pages, 60,000 words and 250 images draws on the archives held by both the cricket club and the history group as well as recounting the memories of villagers and players, past and present. Clive, a club vice president, explained: “Among the many nuggets we’ve found is a photograph and an account of a 1907 men v women cricket match in the village with men batting left-handed with broomsticks! “We also found recipes for all sorts of cakes and pies written by village ladies with known links to cricketers of the time.” The oldest document uncovered is the scorebook from 1919. The book tells far more than the story of Congresbury CC, looking at the development of cricket in North Somerset from the middle of the 19th century with extensive use of newspaper archives since the 1850s. 175 Years of Village Cricket was designed and produced by Bristol Books and can also be obtained online at www.bristolbooks.org

Guide to buying a new or used vehicle
Buying a quality used car or van is not as difficult as it may appear. Not all car dealers are out there to sell you a lemon, or to force you to buy services which you may never use.
However, you must do your homework before you step onto any dealership to ensure you are fully prepared to negotiate with the dealership to get the best possible deal. Consider these tips when planning to purchase your next used car. They are not in any particular order but you should pay close attention to each one of them. Determine your budget Before you visit a dealership to test drive a car, consider your spending limit, based on your ability to pay now and in the future. Often, during the sales process, buyers end up purchasing a vehicle that is beyond their budget. So, make sure that you are firm as to how much you want to spend, how much financing you need, how much monthly payment you will be able to handle, and how much down payment you can afford. Finalize which vehicle you want to buy Before you visit any dealership, you should know the make and model you want to buy. Do your research to make sure the model meets your requirements. Is it the colour, fuel efficiency, personal or family use, or resale value that is important for you? Read Consumer Reports to narrow down your search.
30
Narrow down the dealership Use social media sites, like Facebook, Bing, and Google Plus, to do research on local dealerships. See what people are saying about the dealership, its sales staff, after-sales customer service, and the way a dealership handles a complaint. You can also use sites like www.cardealerreviews.co.uk to read comments and feedback from customers. You should also ask your friends for referrals and their experience with local dealerships. Nothing comes close to personal experience. If you do decide to visit a dealership, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Bring someone with you If you feel intimidated by the car salesperson, then it may be a good idea to take a friend with you to help out during the test drive, finalizing your selection, and price negotiations. Be aware of add-ons that the car salesperson may try to sell you. Don’t be afraid to negotiate and say no when the price is outside of your budget. Don’t be afraid to walk away If not all of your expectations are met, walk away. Even if you feel you are ready to buy, we recommend you take a night to sleep on your decision and make sure it is the vehicle you really want. Discuss the car, its price, financing costs and other details with your family and friends. Review other dealerships’ websites to see how your selection compares to other vehicles. There is no need to rush. A smart dealer will always have good deals for a willing buyer.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING IN A FAMILY BUSINESS An expert divorce lawyer has stressed the importance of planning in family businesses following a case in which divorce proceedings impacted on the stability of the business and put the whole family at risk of financial ruin. A recent judgment by Robert Peel QC at the High Court brought the importance of planning into stark contrast when both parties in the case were left vulnerable with only modest assets and income. Family lawyer Rayner Grace, of national law firm Clarke Willmott LLP, said those involved in family businesses should invest in planning for every eventuality at the earliest possible stage to avoid being burnt later on. Rayner said: “Most families have unwritten rules about how things are done. However, these are not always communicated and understood by all. This can result in the interest of a family member not being aligned with the interests of the business. A clear example is when there is a divorce. “The challenge faced by family businesses is to develop strategies to address issues and to create solutions that support the emotional dimensions of the family. “The most intractable family business disputes are primarily due to the emotional issues that compound them. Taking time to agree the family businesses goals, roles, structure policies and protocol in the family business agreement can be invaluable for protecting family wealth and the business for generations to come.” The case of RM v TM (2020) EWFC 41 followed 22 years of marriage and three children. At the centre of the dispute were two companies founded by the wife’s parents. The first company was “A Ltd” in which her parents owned the majority shareholding (52%) the balance was held between the wife and her brother with 24% each. The second company “B Ltd” was held by the family in the same way, however, the husband was Managing Director of B Ltd, a role he had held until the marriage ended. During the proceedings the wife ascribed a nil value to her business interest and accused the husband of misappropriating funds belonging to the children and committing fraud, concerning his activities at B Ltd
36
The husband attributed a total value to the two businesses of over £10 million gross and claimed that the wife’s share was over £2 million. More importantly, he argued that the wife’s share was a matrimonial asset, that there was liquidity in her share and as such he was entitled to half. As the case progressed there were a number of appeals made and in the end there was a retrial, by which time the parties’ costs had increased significantly. Prior to the retrial the husband agreed not to pursue a claim that the business interests were matrimonial. By that stage the only asset that the court had to determine division of was the equity in the matrimonial home of approximately £630,000. However, the parties had incurred costs and debt between them of some £600,0000. This had the effect of the parties now being extremely vulnerable in even being able to meet their housing needs and those of the children as the costs had eaten into all of the proceeds of sale that were left and they were both left with modest assets and income. As part of the husband’s arguments to the Court he advanced that the wife’s parents should be encouraged to assist the wife in extracting her interest in the family business. What is not known is how this may have affected the stability of the business. The Court were unpersuaded by the husband’s submission that it should encourage the wife’s parents and brother to enable her to extract funds from the illiquid assets in her name, being the businesses and the business property. This meant after extensive litigation the family business was left untouched.
Rayner continued: “The incredible aspect of this case was that after such hostile litigation the parties were left with liquid assets of approximately £5,000 after settling their legal costs and debts, something that could have been avoided with some proper planning. “It also does not take into account the emotional affect, not only on the parties themselves but the wider family who were left to worry at the stability of the business as the litigation was conducted. “This case identifies clearly the need for family businesses to consider protection of the business upon marriage.” Family businesses account for two jobs in five in the UK private sector. A family business agreement provides a clear framework for how your family directs matters when it comes to the family wealth and the family business. A family business agreement can define the roles within the family business, protocols for resolving disputes and succession plans for the business and family wealth. In addition, a prenuptial agreement can give both parties security about their financial future if they are drafted correctly and deal with needs and fairness.
They are especially common when there is inherited wealth or family businesses so that families can ensure fairness in preserving family wealth for their children and grandchildren. Rayner said: “Prenuptials are a common way to preserve specific assets such as an interest in the family business to ensure that if the relationship did end then the future of the family business would not be affected by the financial implications of the divorce, as was the potential in this case. “Moreover a Family Business Agreement would also have eliminated what was undoubtedly a pressurized and stressful time for the wider family members who became inadvertently involved in these proceedings.” Rayner Grace is a partner and expert family lawyer at Clarke Willmott LLP. Rayner specialises in dealing with high value complex financial matters as a result of divorce or relationship breakdown.
