Mikes letter

Hello again !! Doesn’t the week’s fly by at the moment with only 12 weeks now till Christmas. But we will keep quite about that for now as we still have Halloween and bonfire night to go yet.

Seems like the hot topic at the moment is Donald Trump and his short term of coronavirus last week, so is Remdesivir, an antiviral drug shown to modestly help hospitalized COVID-19 patients a cure for the illness ? Or is it just a publicity stunt from Mr Trump to aid his presidential campaign. Anyway the reason for mentioning this is have we found the miracle drug thats going to get us through this pandemic? Or are we just going to have to muddle along with face masks and social distancing for the foreseeable future. On a happier subject looks like we are not going to see any more restrictions being enforced as the South West seems to have one of the lowest cases of the virus in the UK. Well done folks.. However I do feel for the people up North and Scotland that seem to be hit the hardest at the moment thus more restrictions being enforced according to the rumors circulating. Finally will someone please remind me not to take a week off again please as I have never seen so many emails in my life in my inbox that I have had to reply too ranging from local news being sent to thank you messages and happy birthday wishes as this is now our 9th year in the industry. However I do welcome the kind words I received from 3 of our online readers saying how much they have been enjoying our weekly e-magazine on their mobile phones. This makes it all worth while to me and makes me feel so happy to have hopefully helped some people. Thank you and I look forward to the next 365 days of service:)

Dean Holden has been nominated for the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month award. Since he has been appointed head coach in August, Holden has brought in Keith Downing and Paul Simpson as his assistants and, with the help of Chief Executive Mark Ashton, recruited five highly-regarded players – Joe Williams, Chris Martin, Steven Sessegnon, Chris Brunt and Alfie Mawson.

Holden and his backroom staff led the squad to three league wins from three in September, keeping two clean-sheets, which leaves the Robins top of the league – level on points with Reading – as we head into the international break. A hard-fought opening day 2-1 victory over newly-promoted Coventry City got Holden’s men up and running and that was followed up with a 2-0 win at Stoke City. Sheffield Wednesday were then the visitors to Ashton Gate and a 2-0 victory saw the Robins maintain their 100 per cent league record.

Up against Holden for the award is Swansea City’s Steve Cooper, Veljko Paunovic of Reading and AFC Bournemouth’s Jason Tindall. The Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel comprises former Barnsley manager Danny Wilson; Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman; EFL Communications Director Mark Rowan, and Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies.

The winner will be announced Friday 9th October. Jamie Paterson has also been shortlisted for the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award for September.

3 key workers share with us their thoughts of the experience.

On the 6th September, Bristol awoke to the glorious sight of balloons flying over the city. A vision of joy for a city who has missed this ‘normality’ over the pandemic. The fly out was the brainchild of local balloonist Derek Maltby who wanted to give back to key workers and carers from the region. 3 key workers share with us their thoughts of the experience. Abi Elliot works South West Ambulance Service as a student paramedic and is studying the UWE conversion course. Abi was nominated by her friend Hayley Lovannelli, as in addition to being a key worker was juggling childcare for her 4- year old, managing the household and helping with elderly relatives.

6

“Thank you for the incredible experience that I had; I think I’ve yet to come down from the high that I had.! Everything was really well thought out, planned and implemented! My pilot, Rob Schwab and his crew were incredibly friendly, approachable, knowledgeable, and put me at ease straight away (I’m scared of heights). Everything was just perfect, and I can’t praise them enough. It was a beautiful flight, with a chance to be hands on at the end by mucking in and helping with all the packing away, part of the overall experience. I think it would be true to say if I could afford to get involved more, I would genuinely love to do more ballooning. Once again, big ‘thank you’s’ to everyone involved, one item on my bucket list well and truly crossed off!” Abi Elliott

Melissa Whitley nominated herself for the balloon ride after hearing Derek speak on Radio Somerset. A special educational needs teaching assistant from Street, Melissa is a single parent for her 8-year-old son. “My balloon ride was a truly magical experience. I have never experienced anything like it and once my initial nerves went, I loved floating up, in and with the elements. At a very stressful time this was a beautiful gift of surprise and wonder. I could sense the excitement & pleasure on the faces of the others who got to experience it. I would love to send Derek and the team, deep gratitude for their thinking of others. What a generous guy and bunch of people!” Melissa Whitley,Matt Hutchins was nominated by his brother-in-law Jonathan Flower.

Matt is a psychiatric nurse for the NHS at Weston-Super-Mare and his flight was a surprise. Mental health has been challenging for many more people during lockdown and Matt has had lots of extra challenges with meeting clients, helping them understand new parameters, while juggling childcare and being married to another full-time key worker “It was such a fabulous surprise to find out I was lucky enough to be offered a flight, and so generous of all of the balloon teams and all the organisers to give up their time and energy to make it happen. I had no idea that key worker flights were even happening, let alone that I’d been nominated so it really was a surprise to be invited to fly. Massive thank you to Ashley and Andy, pilot and crew for the balloon - ‘Wes the Wolf’, for such an amazing experience.” 7

One lifetime of history preserved in print The latest publication from Bristol Books covers the post-war history of Keynsham and Saltford, taking readers on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

The second section – “Lives and Times” – first recalls some of the people who have made their mark on Keynsham and Saltford through the decades.

The story of Keynsham and Saltford spanning just one lifetime records a host of well-known places and familiar faces from the period between 1945 and 2020.

Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society Chairman Richard Dyson edited the book, the idea for which began when the society’s committee discussed how best to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2015.

From the famous Fry’s factory at Somerdale to the changing face of Keynsham’s shops; from the great flood of 1968 to the construction of the by-pass; from the Pascoe family – of pet food and opera fame – to some famous faces of today, such as Bill Bailey and Judd Trump – it’s all preserved in print. Keynsham & Saltford 1945 – 2020 has been researched and written by members of the Keynsham & Saltford Local History Society.

He said: “When we started, our idea was to compile a chronological account of the period. It soon became clear that this snapshot approach could not cover everything, so we extended our reach to include people of interest who have a local connection, sports clubs and aspects of life that affect us all, such as shops, schools and transport.”

Whether you want to re-kindle old memories or learn about the area’s recent past, the wide-ranging collection of accounts and The 176-page book includes more than 200 photographs and illustrations which help bring pictures brings local history to life. the colourful history to life. Bristol receives funding to roll out HIV transmission prevention drug Bristol is preparing to roll out a new service which will provide a HIV prevention drug across sexual health clinics in the city. The medication known as Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) will now be available across the UK as part of a national programme to help prevent the transmission and spread of HIV. Administered across the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire area by sexual health partnership Unity, which is led by University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, PrEP will be rolled out gradually over the coming months. Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire local authorities have been allocated funding to provide access to the prevention drug from the beginning of October. People vulnerable to contracting HIV will have access to the medication through Unity Sexual Health sites, including Central Health Clinic, Brook, Weston Integrated Sexual Health and Concord Medical Centre. Councillor Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Communities, Equalities and Public Health, said: “We have already made great strides in reducing the number of new HIV infections in our city, and in supporting people living with HIV. Bristol is already part of The Fast Track Cities Initiative - a world-wide movement towards achieving zero new HIV infections and zero AIDS-related deaths by 2030. This is an important step forward as we work towards ending new HIV infections and underpins our practical commitment to tackling health inequalities in Bristol.” Dr Lindsey Harryman, Consultant in Sexual Health at Unity, said: “Unity Sexual Health are delighted to provide an NHS funded PrEP service to our service users. It is a game changing measure to add to our ongoing health promotion work in preventing HIV.” 10

Latest national data from Public Health England shows there are around 1000 people living in Bristol with HIV. Each year an average of 43 Bristol residents are diagnosed with HIV and many of these are diagnosed late which increases the risk of poor health outcomes. Until now, PrEP has only been available in England as part of clinical trials. Initially there will be limited number of appointments, but, this will increase over the coming months. Richard Angell, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Terrence Higgins Trust said: “It is a point of local pride that Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire are going to be some of the first local authorities in England ready to roll out PrEP to communities that could benefit. We applaud the local leadership, commissioners and Unity Sexual Health. The PrEP drug – that prevents HIV transmission – will change lives, avoid upset and save the health service money. “Currently only available through sexual health clinics, it can benefit not just gay and bisexual men, but women, transgender and Black, Asian and ethnic minority people who might be vulnerable to HIV transmission. Use this opportunity to know your status, prevent HIV transmission and help others in the community be informed about HIV – it is a radically different condition to what it was in the 1980s and 1990s.” For more information about PrEP, please contact Unity Sexual Health on 0117 342 6941 and leave a message - you will be called back - or visit: https://www.unitysexualhealth.co.uk/ prep-what-do-i-need-to-know/ You can also find out more about other sexual health services at: https://www.unitysexualhealth.co.uk/

The Ecological Emergency and the Brislington Greenway The Ecological Emergency and the Brislington Greenway

If the road scheme were to go ahead all of this biodiversity would be lost forever.

At the beginning of the year, Bristol City Council declared an Ecological Emergency in response to escalating threats to local wildlife and ecosystems. The Mayor said, “It is not too late to start the recovery of our wildlife. We must work together to grasp this last chance and put things right for nature and wildlife in our city.”

However, our proposal for an active travel corridor, the Brislington Greenway, would protect the wildlife that has become established here, and help the Council meet its new Ecological Emergency target.

Now the Council has published its strategy document, which outlines its key targets, one of which is to have at least 30% of land in Bristol managed for the benefit of wildlife by 2030. This is potentially good news for our campaign opposing the plan to construct a new main road through the heart of Brislington West, namely the Callington Road Link, along the route of the former Brislington Railway Line. Over the last 60 years, the disused railway line has become a haven for an enormous variety of flora and fauna, including dozens of bird species, mammals such as badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and bats, and reptiles and amphibians such as slow worms, which have protected status.

Together with our changing working and travel habits, with more people working from home and record numbers of people taking up walking and cycling, the case for the road, which was never strong, grows ever weaker. Jos said, “Unfortunately, the Labour-run Council remains determined to build another main road, which is completely contrary to their self-declared Ecological Emergency”. Andrew added, “I hope this won’t be yet another example of empty words from a Mayor who promises so much but delivers so little”. You can find out more about our Brislington Greenway proposals and sign the petition here: https://www.bristollibdems.org/brislingtonrailwaypath

Sovereign in Record Commercial Property Deal Sovereign Housing Association have bought a shopping centre and the adjacent car-park, in the heart of Bristol, in a £27.2m deal from BlackRock UK Property Fund.

Tom Titherington, Executive Director Development and Commercial for Sovereign, has hailed the deal as a step change in Sovereign’s development ambitions.

With 60,000 homes and 140,000 customers Sovereign are one of the leading HA’s in the country, and this multi-tenanted Clifton Down shopping centre and its 350 vehicle car park, is by far the biggest commercial property in Sovereign’s portfolio.

He said: “We have ambitions around taking more of a land-led approach, and the control that gives us, in our development plans and so we are delighted to have secured the Clifton Down shopping centre and the adjacent land.

“This is a retail led, mixed use investment and is a really exciting opportunity for us as a business. The income will allow us to increase our development programme, and in Clifton Down was built in the early 1980’s and the medium to long term there is the potential to redevelop the site to create a sustainable the shopping centre and car park together major mixed use development to include covers over three acres of land. affordable and market housing.” The income generated from ownership of the James Gibson, Development Director, added: centre and the adjacent land means Sover“It is fantastic for us and the area. A local residential property and smaller surface car park has also been bought as part of the investment.

Sovereign are taking more of a land-led approach to their development plans, and this multi-million pound agreement, announced today, is seen as a kick-start to those aspirations. 18

This transaction is in line with BlackRock UK Property Fund’s strategy to reduce the Fund’s retail exposure. Sovereign were represented in the transaction by Savills and BlackRock by Knight Frank

Home Improvement tips Turn your house into a green home with our top eco-friendly improvements If you’re looking to reduce your energy bills and reduce your environmental impact, now’s the time to do it. With the launch of Government incentives such as the Green Homes Grant, we’ve put together our top ‘green home’ improvement tips to help make your home more energy-efficient and reduce your carbon footprint. Upgrade your insulation With nearly 40% of all household heat lost due to poor insulation, ensuring that your home is properly insulated should be at the top of your to-do list. Even though this may be one of the more pricey improvements you’ll need to make, insulation can be effective for at least 40 years and save you £££’s on your heating bill each winter.

Opt for double or triple glazing A typical house loses roughly 10% of heat through the windows and homes that have single glazing feel so much colder compared to those with double or triple glazing. The reason for this is that with only one pane of glass separating inside and outside air, heat is allowed to escape more easily. Double or triple glazed windows may seem like quite an investment however you’ll save a lot of money over the years by reducing your energy bill by anywhere between 50 to 74% by making this upgrade.

Top tip – As with insulation, the government-backed ‘Green Homes Grant’ Scheme could help towards the total cost of upgrading your current window depending on your Top tip – If you don’t currently have insulation circumstances. Check the Gov website for full installed or it doesn’t reach the recommended details. level, it’s worth checking to see if you qualify for government help through the ‘Green Homes Grant’ Scheme. This scheme offers homeowners in England a helping hand in making their homes' energy-efficient by providing vouchers worth up to £5,000. Full details can be found on the GOV website.

Install solar panels Solar panel systems can be used to produce hot water or generate electricity for your home by making use of natural daylight all year round. The good news is that they also generate energy on cloudy days too which is perfect with our famous British weather. These panels need to be fitted either on the roof or a wall that ideally faces South and typically cost around £6,000 to install. The Energy Saving Trust estimates you could save between £85 and £220 a year on your bill based on a typical four-kWp system. Green points – If installing solar panels isn’t an option for you but you’re still worried about your carbon footprint, switching your energy provider to a 100% renewable one is the next best thing. Plus their tariffs tend to more competitive when compared with the big six. Eco-friendly finishes Did you know that you can continue making your home green when it comes to adding that fresh coat of paint to a tired room? Most eco-paints are also water-soluble and are coloured using pigments from natural minerals and plants.

This is good news when it comes to washing brushes and rollers after use. Companies such as Earthborn, Graphenstone and Keim offer eco-friendly alternatives to traditional paints with low VOC (volatile organic compound), organic and natural plant-based options with the cost not being too different when compared with leading brands. Did you know? – Volatile Organic Compound commonly known as VOCs are usually found in many building materials and are one of the reasons for that ‘new paint’ smell. However, these unstable chemicals let off gasses which are harmful to people and the environment meaning that the government regulates their use. Don’t waste water If you’d like to reduce your water usage, installing a water meter is a great way to keep an eye on the amount your household uses. Plus updating your toilet to a low-flush model or changing your shower head to a low-flow version are super-easy solutions.

NEW ROOM BRISTOL IS TRAVELLERS’ CHOICE DESTINATION FOR 2020 Issued with photos: L-R David Worthington and café manager Ewa Kozdeba with their Award; the New Room Chapel; Museum exhibit1; Museum exhibit2

New Room director, David Worthington, said: “Our award is the result of consistently great reviews from our visitors over the last year. “Thank you to everyone who has already visited and contributed such great reviews, and we hope those will inspire lots of other people – both locals and tourists – to pop in and see us as soon as they can.” The venue has also been awarded the We’re Good To Go Industry Standard by Visit England, acknowledging the many coronavirus safety precautions that have been introduced to ensure people have a relaxing and enjoyable visit, including a ‘timed entry slot’ system to manage social distancing around the museum, with online pre-booking available and entry tickets being paid for on arrival.

The team at the New Room in Bristol have been celebrating the announcement that their iconic Grade I listed chapel and state-ofthe-art visitor centre have been awarded the coveted Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for 2020.

The New Room, also known as John Wesley’s Chapel, is the oldest Methodist Chapel in the world and the cradle of the early Methodist movement, and is open to all as a place for private prayer and reflection. The new Arts Council-accredited museum occupies what used to be the preachers' rooms above the chapel (with a lift for disabled access).

Awarded as a result of outstanding visitor feedback submitted to the well-known international review site, these annual accolades are given only to accommodations, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers and are highly ranked within the top 10% of properties on Tripadvisor. Reviews of the New Room frequently mention the peace and serenity of the historic chapel, and of the museum – which opened in 2017 backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund – reviewers said: “Very glad that we (visited) as it really interesting and I felt that I really learned a lot. Deals with the social history of Bristol very well. A lovely little quirky museum which I would recommend.” And: “Overall, this was the best tenner I've spent on a day out with my kids in ages. The staff were excellent and it is a fabulous museum. I'm looking forward to returning (the ticket is valid for a year) without the children so I can have a more detailed look at the

Opening hours for the New Room chapel, museum, award-winning café and shop are Tuesday - Saturday from 11am-3pm. For further details see www.newroombristol.org.uk 23

Short film warns youth of the impact of negative lifestyle choices

Newly released and available to stream via Million Youth Media on YouTube, JOY is an emotive short film following the struggles of a single Nigerian mother (played by Jolade Obsasola) as she raises her young son (Reece Badziokila) in inner city London and tries to steer him away from the lure of life of on the streets. Reflecting on how the streets often claim young men for themselves, only to spit them out in the form of prison, death and trauma, the film warns youngsters of the devastating effect their negative life choices can have on those that love them most. Whilst most young men are unwillingly inveigled into a life of crime, how does this affect the ones called to care for them? African woman are often depicted as strong, proud, independent and rigid characters, yet in shining a light on the toll taken on those we perceive as strongest, JOY aims to deter youngsters from pursuing this perilous path.

24

JOY is directed by the award-winning Sheila Nortley (Night Shift, A Life Lesson), and written by actor Percelle Ascott (The Innocents, Tin Star, Dr Who) and Igor Mongulu in collaboration with Key4Life, a charity which rehabilitates young men in prison or at risk of going to prison, and children caught up in knife crime. Commissioned with the support of Universal Music UK and produced by Wall of Productions, the co-producers behind viral smash hit Shiro’s Story, the launch of JOY also celebrates Key4Life’s 8th birthday. Co-producer and co-writer Igor Mongulu who makes his feature film debut with JOY bringing his personal experience of working with young people and youth offenders to this project, says: “The gang/hood story is one we’ve become all too well accustomed to from film, TV and exposés on the rise of knife crime - the truth of the ‘ends’ is no longer a far unknown world but a stark reality that runs parallel to our daily lives. We see the shocking figures of predominantly young black men stabbed to death in the capital, but a perspective that is seldom shone a light on is how this affects those often closest to them, their mothers.”

Co-producer and co-writer Percelle Ascott, adds: “This has been a profound year that threw unprecedented challenges as we tackled the impact of a global pandemic and the global call for racial justice and equality for black people. Now more than ever, we’re responsible and accountable about how we represent the underrepresented in our community and that is often the black matriarch.” As an African mother, director Sheila Nortley resonates with the mother’s predicament in JOY. “Many black mothers relate to the struggle of trying to keep their son whole emotionally, mentally and physically in a world where from nursery they are seen as a threat,” she says. Joivan Wade, co-founder of Wall of Productions and producer of JOY, says: “It’s been amazing to collaborate with so much talent both behind and in front of the screen for this short, as well as working with Key4Life who are doing life- changing work with young people, and Universal Music UK who’ve supported us in bringing this project to life.”

With the number of recorded offences involving knives in England and Wales reaching 45,627 in 2019 - the highest on record - JOY was part inspired by the experiences of many of the young men that have been through Key4Life’s training programmes who’ve been involved in knife crime, risking their lives and the lives of others, and often losing friends to this tragic way of life. Former offender, Renardo Henry aka Creepa, now an emergent rap artist, who runs music workshops and is a caseworker for Key4Life’s rehabilitation programmes is one example of this. Creepa, says: “My personal experience of being involved in knife crime led to a huge amount of suffering for myself, my family and many people. I’ve witnessed two friends of mine die from stabbing injuries, and that made me leave that life behind and come to Key4Life, who helped me turn my life around. I truly hope JOY will provide a powerful deterrent to any youngsters tempted by the trappings of the destructive path of knife crime.”

£1.5m raised for good causes

A regional co-operative is marking the success of the carrier bag levy five years after it came into force in England on 5 October 2015. Southern Co-op's customers have cut their use of single use plastic bags by millions whilst also raising more than £1.5m for good causes across the south. Back in 2015 the independent retailer initially set a goal of reducing single-use plastic bags by at least 50% across all of its stores based in Berkshire, Bristol, Devon, Dorset, East Sussex, London, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Kent, Somerset, Surrey, West Sussex and Wiltshire. This target was smashed within a year and the downward trend has continued into 2020. It was estimated that 29 million single use plastic bags were used in 2014 which has been reduced by 78% in 2019.

Gemma Lacey, Director for Sustainability and Communications at Southern Co-op, said: "As a responsible regional business, it is essential that we continue to move people away from single use plastic so we are pleased to see a continued year-on-year reduction in carrier bag sales. "Whilst we are a convenience store and need to continue to provide customers with a way to carry their shopping home, customers can return these to our store colleagues for recycling. "Customers are also switching to reusable bags as well as compostable bags which we've introduced in stores where the local authority collects household food waste recycling. We hope this trend carries on and continues to make an impact in tackling climate change." For every single use bag purchased at a Southern Co-op store 5p is donated to good causes. Since 2015, the donations total more than £1.5 million.

30

Holly Bramble, Community and Campaign Co-ordinator at Southern Co-op, said: "£1.5m is a huge amount of money and so many small groups have benefitted. In the beginning, we partnered with the Wildlife Trust, Solent Mind, Stand Against Violence and Scope - all of which made a huge impact in their local communities. "Since then the funds have supported hundreds of small local charities and good causes via Love Your Neighbourhood, our community programme which aims to create greener, safer, healthier and more inclusive neighbourhoods. "These causes are selected by our local stores and funeralcare branches and range from primary schools PTAs and food banks to hospitals and homeless charities. Each one means something special to our colleagues and their communities." The carrier bag levy is just one part of Southern Co-op's community contributions which are accumulated from a wide range of activities including cash donations, fundraising events, product donations, hours spent volunteering and other fundraising activities. In 2019, a total of £1.43m was contributed to local communities which includes a direct investment of £513,974 from Southern Co-op and £387,992 from the carrier bag levy. South West crematoria upgrade to webcast funerals

A major upgrade has been carried out at five crematoria in the South West as restrictions on the number of people attending funeral services look set to continue for some time due to coronavirus.

Now, we sometimes have hundreds of mourners logging on for individual services and we have partnered with Obitus to upgrade and improve the technology and make it more robust and reliable.

Westerleigh, Treswithian Downs, Torbay, Sedgemoor and Forest of Dean crematoria, which are all operated by Westerleigh Group, have had new systems installed by Obitus, the leading supplier of bereavement technology in the UK.

“We spoke to funeral arrangers and celebrants and they overwhelmingly supported the look and feel of the online system offered by Obitus as they provide comfort to those who have to use the system.”

The investment is part of a complete upgrade of audio-visual equipment at each location, supporting funeral directors and families with the music, hymns and visual tributes they require at ceremonies.

The upgrade is part of a nationwide project by Westerleigh Group, who have introduced the same system into all 34 crematoria that it operates in England, Scotland and Wales.

James Crossland, Managing Director of Obitus said: “We share the same core values as Westerleigh in providing a first-class service to Kevin Davies, Regional Manager, said: “Sadly, it is clear that restrictions that limit the the bereaved. Railway Tavern in Charfield I do love a good pub. A fine example of a great British Pub, is the Railway Tavern in Charfield. Located next to the disused railway platform, it is a family run business serving good honest pub grub at an affordable cost. Due to the Covid pandemic the once generous menu has been scaled down, but you can still get some pub classics on there.

I was pleasantly surprised, they were not the usual nasty and dry pieces of breaded cardboard you usually get. Instead these where tender strips of chicken, cooked in a light, slightly spicy breadcrumb with a delicious gravy for dunking. Shortly after the starters were cleared my lasagne arrived. A bubbling dish of molten cheese, rich tomato sauce, creamy béchamel and a vibrant twist of pesto to round it off. It was delicious. Served with a hot garlic ciabatta roll, it was filling and comforting. Just what you want a lasagne to be. The lasagne is served on its own without any accompaniment except the bread and a salad garnish, but you don’t need any. The portions here are very generous.

The Tavern is a mix of classic English village Inn and casual family dining restaurant. An eclectic mix of local drinkers form nearby and travelling diners coming in from the surrounding villages makes for a lovely and friendly atmosphere. Now usually when I go to a pub I like a good pie pastry top and bottom please, but when I visited only a few weeks ago I had their lasagne. But before that, I ordered a starter of southern fried chicken strips with chicken gravy. 38

A starter, and a main course down, I was done in. No pudding for me. But on the menu there are a variety of different puds available. The staff here are very friendly and have done everything they can to make this place Covid secure without doing away with any of its unique charm and character. They make you feel very welcome and it’s is certainly a place you’d want to go back to with family and friends.

You will have to suck it up businesses

A ban stopping businesses from handing out plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds to customers comes into force from 1st October April was the original deadline for the new legislation, which stops the sale and distribution of the single-use plastic items. But, coming in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and given its impact on supply chains, the government decided to postpone the ban until now. From today, it is illegal in almost all circumstances for businesses to give them out to customers with exemptions in place to protect disabled people and those with medical conditions who require plastic straws. Despite the delay, Environment Secretary George Eustice says Number 10 is "firmly committed to tackling" the problem of single-use plastics."The ban on straws, stirrers and cotton buds is just the next step in our battle against plastic pollution and our pledge to protect our ocean and the environment for future generations. "We are already a world-leader in this global effort. Our five-pence charge on single-use plastic bags has successfully cut sales by 95% in the main supermarkets, we have banned microbeads, and we are building plans for a deposit return scheme to drive up the recycling of single-use drinks containers." Pre-pandemic, Defra says the UK was getting through almost five billion straws annually, 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion cotton buds. 40

While it's a step in the right direction, green campaigners like John Read, founder of Clean Up Britain, argue it's the tip of the iceberg."I think the government do deserve some credit for nudging people's behaviour in the right direction but actually when you look at it, it's really more piecemeal and symbolic than anything else. "We need to change people's behaviour in a sustainable and permanent way, we need to see a national behavioural change campaign and that's what we haven't got in this country at the moment. "People have got to understand that when they throw away plastic straws, hamburger packets, crisp packets, it's all their own personal pollution‌ so people understand that they're doing the damage to the environment." Sadly there's now a new villain in town: disposable PPE. Worn once, unable to be recycled, single-use by design. The RSPCA's Head of Wildlife Adam Grogan says the charity is increasingly being called out to animals who're getting caught up in it. "We are seeing an increase in numbers of animals getting caught up in things like masks‌ they've got their legs or other parts of their bodies entangled in things like the elastic bands that go over the ears. "This proposed legislation coming in about singe use plastics should help us to refocus on the fact that the pandemic has created another set of single use items that actually we don't need to use, especially we can use reusable items a lot of the time."

Look to water first You need to drink water every day. Most people have been told they should drink 6 to 8, 8-ounce glasses of water each day. That’s a reasonable goal. However, different people need different amounts of water to stay hydrated. Most healthy people can stay well hydrated by drinking water and other fluids whenever they feel thirsty. For some people, fewer than 8 glasses may be enough. Other people may need more than 8 glasses each day.

Energy drinks are not the same as sports drinks. Energy drinks usually contain large amounts of caffeine. Also, they contain ingredients that overstimulate you (guarana, ginseng, or taurine). These are things your body doesn’t need. Most of these drinks are also high in added sugar. According to doctors, children and teens should not have energy drinks. Thirst is often confused with hunger. True hunger will not be satisfied by drinking water. Drinking water may also contribute to a healthy weight-loss plan. Some research suggests that drinking water can help you feel full. If you have trouble remembering to drink water, drink on a schedule. For example, drink water when you wake up, at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and when you go to bed. Or, drink a small glass of water at the beginning of each hour. Drink water when you go to a restau rant. It will keep you hydrated, and it’s free.

Things to consider If you don’t drink enough water, you may become dehydrated. This means your body doesn’t have enough fluid to operate properly. Your urine can be an indicator if you’re dehydrated. If it’s colorless or light yellow, you’re well hydrated. If your urine is a dark yellow or amber color, you may be dehydrated. There are other signs that can signal you may be dehydrated. They include: • • • •

Little or no urine. Urine that is darker than usual. Dry mouth. Sleepiness or fatigue.

Some people are at higher risk of dehydration, including people who exercise at a high intensity (or in hot weather) for too long, have certain medical conditions (kidney stones, bladder infection), are sick (fever, vomiting, diarrhea), are pregnant or breastfeeding, are trying to lose weight, or aren’t able to get enough fluids during the day. Older adults are also at higher risk. As you get older, your brain may not be able to sense dehydration. It doesn’t send signals for thirst. Note that water makes up more than half of your body weight. You lose water each day when you go to the bathroom, sweat, and even when you breathe. You lose water even faster when the weather is really hot, when you’re physically active, or if you have a fever. Vomiting and diarrhea can also lead to rapid water loss. Be sure to actively drink plenty of water to avoid becoming dehydrated. 43

Flood mitigation strategy launched Bristol City Council and the Environment Agency have unveiled their plan for reducing the risk of flooding from the River Avon to Bristol and neighbouring communities. The Bristol Avon Flood Strategy is the result of multiple technical studies to find the most feasible and cost-effective way of managing the increasing risk of flooding from the River Avon. The council will be asking citizens for their views on the proposals in a public consultation from 25 October – 20 December. Today, around 1,100 properties near the city centre and a further 200 properties in neighbouring communities are at risk in the unlikely event of a severe river or tidal flood. Without additional defences, the number of homes and businesses at risk would rise to around 4,500 by the end of the century as climate change and rising sea levels increase the risk of more severe flooding. The proposals – presented in a ‘Strategic Outline Case’ – set out the council’s preferred route to better protect homes and properties.

46

This approach would see new flood defences created or the level of existing defences raised along the lower lying sections of the River Avon. New defences would be designed to be in keeping with the local area, and developed in consultation with local communities as more detailed proposals for areas along the river come forward. While improved flood defences are needed to reduce the impact of flooding across the city, the council’s plan is to create defences that improve life in the city year-round, not just when the River Avon floods. The necessary works create the opportunity to improve walking and cycling links along the River Avon and into the rest of the city, as well as maintaining and improving access to the river. The council will also look for opportunities to enhance or preserve public spaces, wildlife areas and heritage sites, such as the Underfall Yard Scheduled Ancient Monument. By reducing the risk of flooding in areas identified for significant regeneration, such as Temple Quarter, the proposals outlined by the council would enable development to come forward, providing much-needed jobs and homes in these areas.

The approach would be adaptive; meaning any construction of defences would be in phases. Defences would only be built as high as needed in the short term, but could be raised if the risk of flooding increases, future-proofing the city against rising sea levels and the effects of climate change. .

The council’s public consultation on its proposals will run from 26th October to 20th December. While everyone in the city who wishes to have a say will be able to, the council is prioritising those most likely to be affected by its proposals and by potential future flooding.

Councillor Nicola Beech, Bristol City Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for flooding, said: “Bristol and the River Avon are intrinsically linked, and the city has prospered because of its riverside location. Our vision, set out in this strategy, is to design measures that deliver year-round benefits to Bristol, not just when the River Avon floods. We need to better protect people’s homes and businesses, but we want to use this as an opportunity to improve public spaces, enhance access to the river and create better walking and cycling connections in the city, as well as protecting heritage sites around the river. By using this approach, we can reduce the risk of flooding to Bristol while creating a more active, sustainable and resilient city.”

Starting this week (5th October), the council has written to around 1,200 homes and businesses near the River Avon to invite them to have an early conversation with the council to ask questions and voice any concerns they may have.

Emma Baker, Wessex Area Director at the Environment Agency, said: “It is vital that there is a plan in place across the city to reduce flooding both now and into the future and that those who live and work in Bristol can have a say on proposals in this plan. Having worked closely with Bristol City Council, we support the proposals in the emerging strategy as a sensible and cost effective way of reducing the risk of flooding from the River Avon for both existing and new homes and businesses. We look forward to continuing to work with the council and others to further develop this approach.”

Consultation on the proposed approach is the first stage in a long-term plan. If the strategy is approved, it is anticipated works could start from 2025, following additional technical assessments, detailed design work, further public engagement and planning consents.

The consultation documents also set out the flood defence options considered by the council and Environment Agency but not deemed feasible following numerous technical studies. These include a tidal barrier or barrage, both of which would not reduce, and could even worsen, the flood risk from river flows from upstream, as well as being significantly more expensive than the proposed approach.
