Mikes letter

Wow that 3 weeks of lockdown went fast didn’t it, lets see what Mr Johnson has to say on Sunday evening about possible refinement of the lockdown rules. I hope we see some sort of return to schooling and social bubble being brought in to ease the monotony of day to day life at the moment.

This is just my opinion but is this Furlough and government grants just a means of a long paid holiday for some lucky business owners as I had a conversation with a friend this week over the phone and he suggested he was getting his, and I quote “Fat payout” from the government this week and enjoying the time off, Then theirs those businesses that are suffering due to no or little financial help at all. This going to create just one huge tax increase I think. When we get to the other side of this lockdown. So is this a victory ? Or just one big payoff to keep some of us quite. Rant over. Finally This Friday is a bank holiday so I hope we all use our common sense and stay at home as much as possible and enjoy the sunshine in the comfort of our back gardens. Lastly please remember to show your respect to the NHS and carers by clapping at 8pm this evening. Till next week folks stay safe x

Home sales are down across the country We have discovered the cheapest Bristol home sold in March at a time the housing market took a massive hit from the coronavirus crisis.

According to the Land Registry just 5,176 homes where sold across the country and theses have been registered in March - that’s barely a third of the number, 16,042, registered in February. The drop is mainly down to the Covid-19 outbreak and had an impact on both house sales and on the registration of sales. The UK government issued guidance on March 26th warning people to delay house moves when possible during this lockdown period, meaning that some sales that were due to be completed in March will not have gone ahead at all. However, despite the crisis, we have discovered some properties in Bristol have still been sold. Here’s some of the cheapest homes sold in Bristol in the month of March: 81 Headley Park Avenue, Headley, BS13 7NW A terrace house which sold for £165,000 on March

9 The Ridge, Shirehampton, BS11 0DZ Terrace house which sold for £178,500 on March 6 9 Throgmorton Road, BS4 1HS A semi-detached house, sold for £182,000 on March 9. Flat 2, The Oaks, Brynland Avenue, Bishopston, BS7 9DF A flat, sold for £191,250 on March 6. 3 Albany Street, BS15 8BS A terrace house, sold for £194,500 on March 5. 54 Two Acres Road, Hengrove, BS14 9TY A terrace house, sold for £220,000 on March 5 (this sale may have been a buy-to-let, a transfer to a company, or a repossession). 10 The Gastons, Lawrence Weston, BS11 0QZ A semi-detached house, sold for £223,000 on March 6 (this sale may have been a buy-to-let, a transfer to a company, or a repossession). 110 Four Acres, BS13 8RD A terrace house, which sold for £195,000 on March 17 Nags Head Hill, BS5 8LN A terrace house, sold for £210,000 on March 2.

CLARKE WILLMOTT APPOINTS NEW PROPERTY SERVICES MANAGING DIRECTOR Leading national law firm Clarke Willmott LLP has announced the appointment of a new Managing Director for its Property Services Division. Partner and current head of the firm’s Social Housing Sector, Kary Withers, has taken over the role from Graham McIntyre after he stepped down at the end of last month to focus on growing the firm’s Real Estate sector and further developing the Property Litigation team. Kary joined Clarke Willmott in 2005 and has been part of the tier-one rated Property Litigation team since its inception. Having worked her way up from Associate to Equity Partner in the firm, Kary successfully developed a leading telecoms practice and became team manager for a decade before becoming Social Housing Sector Head in 2017. Clarke Willmott CEO, Stephen Rosser, said: “Kary has led the Social Housing sector to its current success; over the last three years our client list has continued to grow and our sector turnover has increased by more than 20%. “Kary has developed strong working relationships with all teams integral to the sector including Property Development and Regeneration, Construction, Housing Management and Home Sales, and has close working relationships with Planning as a Property Litigation Partner. “Outgoing MD Graham McIntyre will be focusing on more client and business development activity with a specific priority being the reinvigoration of the Real Estate sector. He also holds key client account partner positions, to which he is keen to give increased attention. “Kary and Graham have worked closely together for many years which will aid in creating a seamless transition.

6

“These relationships and the experience Kary has gained in nearly 15 years at Clarke Willmott make her exceptionally qualified for the Property Services MD role.” Her current role will be taken on by Vicky Kells and Lindsay Felstead, both Partners, who will jointly lead the firm’s Social Housing sector. Vicky Kells has over 20 years’ experience and is Clarke Willmott’s national head of Social Housing finance while Lindsay Felstead has worked in the sector for 18 years as national head of Housing Management. Kary said: “It has been an absolutely pleasure to have led such a great team for the past three years. Huge congratulations to Vicky and Lindsay who will take over my role, they have great plans for the next chapter which I know will continue to go from strength to strength. “Both are already heavily involved in decision making as part of the firm’s Social Housing management team and both have extensive sector experience working with a host of industry-leading clients. “I am delighted to be taking on the role of MD of Property Services and will continue to support the sector. “We have a national reputation which I’m looking forward to expanding upon and hope to continue Graham’s great work in establishing Clarke Willmott as a leading Property Services firm.” Clarke Willmott LLP is a national law firm with seven offices across the country, including Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Southampton and Taunton. NHS Hero's Poem We are called hero’s. We are thanked by your claps We are given gifts; And we are thankful of that! We are called hero’s But us hero’s cry When we’re struggling with the pressures And when our patients die We are called hero’s But it doesn’t feel right, To take a title of a hero When you can’t sleep at night

You are also the hero’s, You have stacked up the shelves, You have looked after your neighbours, And cared for yourselves You are also the hero’s, You have worked from your home And followed the instruction to isolate alone You are all the hero’s, You’ve gave us love all the way through, And I promise without your love, Then we couldn’t do what we do!

We are called hero’s, On the ITU frontline, From the domestics to the consultants, All of us shine @southmeadhospitalcharity 8

‘A Time to Celebrate & Remember’ This year, Victory in Europe Day falls on Friday 8 May, and is an opportunity for the country to come together in order to remember the sacrifices that others made on our behalf. However, as we face some of the most challenging times since the end of the Second World War, it is now more important than ever for us unite as a nation and celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe. Of course, the vast majority of the celebrations and events that had been planned have all been cancelled, but more imaginative ways have been employed so that the country is still able to mark this important occasion.

After this, the whole country is being encouraged to join in with the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of World War Two’ by standing up and raising a glass and undertaking the following toast, “To those who gave so much, we thank you”. This will be a unique opportunity for everyone to pay tribute to the many millions at home and abroad who gave so much to ensure we all enjoy and share the freedoms we have today.

One idea is to host a ‘Virtual Street Party’ in your own front garden or on the pavement. Jos and Andrew are delighted that plenty of streets in Brislington are already making plans to do so. Why not decorate your house red, white and blue? Children might like to do chalk drawings on the pavement to bring a festive spirit to your road. Please remember to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

At 6.55pm the Lord Mayor, Cllr. Jos Clark, will read the poem, ‘A Cry for Peace Around the World’. Once again, this will be broadcast online. She will be doing this simultaneously with others around the world. At 9pm The Royal British Legion has called for people to help commemorate the anniversary by participating in a national singalong of Dame Vera Lynn’s moving and inspirational song, ‘We’ll Meet Again’, so get practicing now!

In Bristol the official celebrations begin at 3pm with a Flag Raising attended by the Mayor, Marvin Rees, and the Lord Mayor, Cllr. Jos Clark. A lone piper will play ‘Battle’s O’er’ and you can watch all the proceedings on the council’s social media channels. This will be replicated across the country and marks the moment when the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, officially announced to the nation that war in Europe had ended.

10

Jos said, “It’s fair to say that the celebrations are not what we were expecting, but it’ll still be good in our own way, at home with our families, to mark the day and remember the sacrifices of others”. Andrew added, “We’ve seen some amazing examples of community spirit over the last couple of months during the national emergency and I’m sure VE Day will be no exception”. By Cllr. Jos Clark, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Brislington West Ward and Andrew Varney, Liberal Democrat Councillor Candidate for Brislington West Ward.

BLOOD TESTS BY POST TO SUPPORT WOMEN WITH FERTILITY ISSUES A new service – a ‘finger prick’ blood tests by post – just launched by the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine (BCRM) will come as welcome news to women in the South West who are experiencing problems conceiving a baby. With clinical fertility services currently on hold during lockdown, the possibility of being able to do a blood test at home from Bristol’s longest-established fertility clinic will enable women who plan to embark on fertility investigations or treatment when restrictions are lifted to clear some of the initial hurdles sooner than expected. BCRM team leader, Valentine Akande, said: “Although the practical work of making babies at our clinic is on hold for the time being, we continue to hold ‘virtual’ telephone and video consultations for new and existing clients, and this new postal blood test service enables a woman to take the next vital step on her assisted fertility journey. “Before any kind of IVF treatment is commenced, ovarian reserve testing for AMH levels is carried out to enable us to assess the number and potentially the quality of a woman’s eggs. “AMH otherwise known as Anti-Mullerian Hormone, helps us accurately quantify your egg reserve. ”A low level of AMH can indicate that a woman is nearing the menopause. “We can undertake all routine fertility blood tests and the results allow our team to discover what the starting point is for each patient we are working with, and we are then in a position to give her our best advice on her particular options.” All interested parties will first be offered a ‘virtual’ consultation via telephone, Skype or Zoom to enable them to discuss their situation with one of BCRM’s specialists.

BCRM, which has the highest success rate in the South West for IVF, also offers a wealth of helpful information to women and couples experiencing fertility issues via their website, see www.FertilityBristol.com Anyone interested in finding out whether a postal bloodtest is suitable for them can call BCRM’s hotline on 0117 3018 605 or email info@BCRM.org.uk

Could we see some schools rerun in June with some social distancing rules in place? Local schools have been asking teachers to return to work during lockdown to decorate classrooms and attend face to face meetings. Making fresh preparations for a reopening.

Colleges, schools and local nurseries shut their doors over six weeks ago due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Remaining open to vulnerable youngsters and the children of key workers in need of kid care.

In the last few days, teachers have been asked to come into school to get them used to the workplace and to get classrooms ready for new social distancing measures. The Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has suggested schools in England are set to reopen in a phased manner after the lockdown but he has yet to mention a date for this to happen. Clearly a Government announcement is on the cards this week and schools will need to respond accordingly to make appropriate preparations in line with the plans that could be outlined.

ALD AUTOMOTIVE TEAMS UP WITH KARSHARE TO PROVIDE CARS TO FRONT LINE SERVICES Key workers from The North Bristol NHS Trust and the University Hospitals are being given free use of a fleet of 33 vehicles, provided by Bristol-based ALD Automotive and managed through Karshare’s free community car scheme. The 30 cars, two vans and a minibus, will be used to help key workers commute more safely, distribute supplies (including PPE) and support the community. Tim Laver, ALD’s Managing Director, commented: “As part of the Bristol community we all wanted to do something to help during this time of crisis, and providing vehicles was an obvious starting point. We therefore teamed up with Karshare to assist with the excellent work they were already doing in the Bristol area.”

Karen De Freitas, who recently moved to Bristol, has started working for Care 1st and is using one of the ALD cars to go house-to-house, said: “I recently moved to the area and wasn’t able to sort out a car out before lockdown started. I’m doing domiciliary care within the community and having access to a car means I can now provide more care to those in need in the community. I’m grateful to both Karshare and ALD; it’s a fantastic scheme and will make a real difference for many people during the crisis.”

Karshare founder Andy Hibbert explains their philosophy: “We’re already partnered with Bristol Airport and QBE Insurance where we run a service renting out people’s cars when they go on holiday. We started thinking about how we could make a Because public transport services have been cut and difference in the current situation and the principle social distancing rules restrict the sharing of lifts to is exactly the same. We hope that the vehicles will make life a little easier for them, enabling them to do their vital work in hospitals and around the community.”

Your Garden In May

Spring is well under way now. The spring bulbs are fading and the herbaceous border is growing in leaps and bounds. The May days are longer and warmer and the risk of frost should have gone by now. The idea of getting out in the garden during the fine weather and ‘ticking things off the list’ becomes much more appealing. Spring flowering bulbs and plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding, and its promise of colour to come. But don’t get overwhelmed by those seemingly endless list of gardening jobs – here are our three most important… Plant summer bedding May is the month to get your summer bedding started in borders and containers. If planting borders lift out old plants run a fork through the soil and add a good fertilizer before replanting summer plants.

Remove around a third of the oldest flowering stems – this will make the plant look better and encourage new growth to create a good display next year. Be sure to check large shrubs and hedges for nesting birds before you start chopping!

Try to fill pots and containers in the position they are going to stay – they can become heavy when filled! Water retaining crystals will help to reduce the amount of watering and keep the compost moist during warmer periods. Don’t forget to feed with fertiliser during flowering period.

Plant out young veg Marrow, courgette and sweetcorn are all ready to be sown in the greenhouse. The likes of brussel sprouts, kale, peas and swede should be okay covered outside.

Prune evergreen hedges and spring flowering shrubs There’s no better time to give evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy. Smaller hedges can be tackled with a pair of shears, but you may need a hedge trimmer for larger bushes. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring as soon as they have finished flowering. Broom, forsythia and ribes all need pruning now.

22

If you have already grown tomatoes, move them outside to harden them off. Keep them outside during the day and bring them back inside at night for two weeks to acclimatize them. If you have potatoes that are starting to emerge, pull a few inches of earth around the plant with a rake to give the plant more soil to grow.

Enjoy your garden!

Looking good this month... Geranium Why should you plant them? Geraniums make popular bedding plants – either in the garden or in pots and hanging baskets. They thrive outdoors in the summer but are also great for using a houseplant. They look good planted in a group in a flowerbed all by themselves or mixed in with other annuals – the perfect plant for any spot that calls for a splash of colour throughout the season. How should you plant them? Geraniums need to be grown in well draining soil or if planting in pots a good quality free draining compost. They should be located in a bright spot in the garden that gets plenty of sunshine. Soil should be allowed to dry between watering to avoid root rot.

BRISTOL CHARITY OFFERS MYTH-BUSTING ADVICE TO PEOPLE SHIELDING DUE TO CANCER DURING THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN A Bristol-based charity which supports people living with cancer is offering advice to help people living with the disease during the lockdown, who may be very fearful for their health.

Dr Zollman has created an advisory video which aims to bust some of the common myths about cancer and coronavirus. Five common misunderstandings she highlights are:

Dr Catherine Zollman, medical director of Penny Brohn UK has made a film to dispel some of the myths regarding Covid-19 for people with cancer, particularly those who have been asked to shield themselves from contact with others for at least 12 weeks.

MYTH: COVID is a serious illness and likely to kill anyone in a vulnerable group, including everyone with a history of cancer.

"Some of the people we support are very worried that their cancer diagnosis and treatment makes them particularly vulnerable to suffering very badly if they catch Covid-19, which is understandable" says Dr Zollman. "However, I've spoken to several people with cancer who have received a shielding letter, sometimes over a year after they have completed all their cancer treatments and months after they've gone back to full-time work, and seen how upset and anxious they've become about their state of health - just because of the letter. A client who contacted Dr Zollman recently explains how receiving a shielding letter made her feel: "Having finished chemotherapy a year ago and targeted treatment in December, I was really surprised to get a shielding letter. The letter had no personal context so left me feeling suddenly fearful that maybe my assumptions about how my body had recovered were wrong and what if my immune system was not working as well as I thought? Exercise and a healthy diet are massively important to me for my recovery and long-term health so I felt concerned that in receiving this letter this was being taken away from me or being made more difficult to achieve." Dr Zollman continues: "That made me realise people need help to interpret the shielding letter for their own individual situations so I decided to make a video to explain the process behind why people were selected and to reduce the negative impacts it may have had. "It's important in these challenging times not to let fear take over and we want to help anyone with cancer to be able to put things in perspective and show them that there are positive ways they can support their health and manage their worries during the lockdown."

26

FACT: Although >90% of people with Covid-19 will recover completely, in some people the illness can be serious or fatal .There are certain groups of people who may be especially vulnerable, including some people with certain types of cancer or having certain types of cancer treatment. For many other people with a history of cancer this is not the case, most will have a mild illness and recover well. Even in the vulnerable groups, the majority of people who get the illness will make a complete recovery. MYTH: The immune system of everyone with cancer is weak and therefore they are more vulnerable to the virus FACT: after treatment the immune system usually recovers well and regains robustness MYTH: There is nothing we can do to support our immune systems and improve our resilience to the virus FACT: although we don't know much about Covid-19 specifically yet, we do know that many lifestyle tools are evidenced to support resilience and encourage a healthy immune response to other viral infections including those caused by other Corona viruses MYTH: Shielding recommendations are completely inflexible and should be strictly followed by anyone receiving the shielding letter FACT: these letters are necessarily simplified to cover large groups of people so they contain the same information for lots of people in lots of very different situations. While it's important to take them seriously, you can speak to your GP/healthcare team to see if in your individual situation you may be able to ease the restrictions e.g. to go out for a walk with appropriate distancing measures in place, if you feel this is important for your own health and wellbeing.

MYTH: People with cancer are worse off than other people in the current Covid-19 lockdown FACT: People with cancer have already had to deal with the possibility of life-limiting illness and have often faced more uncertainty and anxiety than many other people in society. The perspective this gives them, and the inner strength and sources of support that they often find in adversity, can give them helpful tools and strategies to deal well with the current Covid-19 crisis. They have often learned to see the bigger picture, live much more in the moment, and to know they can survive in isolation. They have also often learned ways of supporting themselves to live better, eating more healthily, being more physically active and managing stress better than before their diagnosis. Many people with cancer find they are actually coping much better with the current Covid situation than they would have expected. Dr Zollman is also concerned that many people are delaying consulting their GP with possible cancer symptoms, due to fear of catching Covid-19, meaning that cancers that could be cured are being missed. She explains: “Many types of cancer are straightforward to treat and cure if you catch them early, but since the beginning of the outbreak of Covid-19, there has been a big drop in the number of people who are going to their GP with signs of early cancer. “If you are tempted to stay at home and wait until the Covid crisis is over to get your symptoms checked out, please think again. Make an appointment to talk to a GP about any worrying concerns, such as any persistent unexplained bruising, weight loss or fevers, lumps, moles which are changing, difficulty swallowing your food, persistent cough, post-menopausal bleeding, change in your bowels, or blood in your poo or pee.

“There is a real risk that, if left unchecked, any cancer present could grow and spread, making it much more difficult to treat successfully. GPs can arrange many of the tests you might need over the phone, and if they do need to see you in person, most have strict infection control procedures designed for your safety, which minimise the chances of anyone who attends the surgery catching Covid-19. Ask about what your local practice’s procedures are.” “Don’t let Covid-19 reduce your chances of a successful cure from cancer - help catch cancer early by making an appointment with your GP if you have any worrying symptoms.” For 40 years Penny Brohn UK has been working compassionately alongside people with cancer, placing them at the heart of everything it does. Its whole person approach offers personalised care from the point of a cancer diagnosis into treatment and throughout survivorship. Exploring areas like diet, exercise, emotions, relationships and managing stress, its free courses, one-to-one therapies, and group sessions, work alongside standard medical treatment to achieve the best health and wellbeing by supporting the holistic needs - psychological, emotional, spiritual and physical - of people affected by cancer. During Covid-19 lockdown, all Penny Brohn UK’s face-to-face and residential services have been suspended but it continues to support people with cancer online and by telephone, via group and one-to-one sessions, and through resources on our website and social media channels.

MEMORIAL WOODLANDS RE-OPEN Bristol Memorial Woodlands has reopened to the public, following a change to the rules signed by the Secretary of State for Health. Families are once again visiting the resting places of their loved ones and others to enjoy the woodlands, providing they adhere to social distancing rules.

“We are pleased that our gates are open once again and ask all visitors to adhere to social distancing from others that may be visiting and stay in their family groups and respect those attending funerals.

The 100-acre woodlands just north of Bristol near Alveston, were closed in March on the instructions of the Government, although graveside funerals have continued and now small-scale funerals for up to 10 mourners have resumed in the chapel.

“Work has gone on behind the scenes to increase our capacity for funerals and enable us to introduce burials at below the average price of a cremation. We provide more time for families to grieve and mark the passing of a loved one than the short slots available at busy crematoriums.”

In response to the coronavirus pandemic Bristol Memorial Woodlands has reduced the cost of funerals and increased the number of services being offered each week. Families may also have a simple funeral now and return for a full-scale memorial service and wake later in the year with graveside ceremony.

Burials at Bristol Memorial Woodlands are less environmentally damaging than cremations. The woodlands also include the “Meadows of Peace” for Muslim burials and a dedicated Jewish cemetery. Information on Bristol Memorial Woodlands can be found at www.memorialwoodlands.com.

Christopher Baker, founder of the woodlands, said: “The whole idea of creating the woodlands is to provide a tranquil place that the public can enjoy. More than ever a place where people can reflect and relax outdoors is needed. We are creating a traditional English woodland maintained for the future by a charitable trust.

Families requiring support with funeral arrangements can contact Luke on 01454 414999 or Ella, at Westbury-on-Trym, on 0117 9504100. Emails admin@memorialwoodlands.com or admin@mwfuneraldirectors.com.

RULES OUTLINED FOR FURLOUGH The building trade has been getting knocked regularly on the news over the past few weeks for continuing to go to work, but given that the majority of workers are self-employed and the government has offered little help to this sector of the economy, who can blame them, but at least there will be an announcement later today.

Scheme will be administered by HMRC:

On the employment side, employers have been waiting for details on how the job retention scheme will work. The ICAEW have published their thoughts on it, please see below:

• As this will take time to build, businesses should look to the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme to support cash flow in the meantime. The narrative used in the information released so far says ‘if your employer cannot cover staff costs due to COVID-19 they may be able to access support…’. This is a conditional phrase which may relate to existing funds available to the employer. We do not yet know how these might be determined, nor whether there is a bar of some description.

Rules as outlined in official statements released at 23 March 2020 Furloughed members of staff must not work for the employer during the period of furlough. Furlough is from 1 March 2020, so is to be backdated. It will last for at least 3 months and will be extended if necessary. Note that while the scheme is backdated to the beginning of March as it is intended to support all those employed then, a firm will only be eligible to claim the grant once they have agreed the furlough with their staff and staff have stopped working for the employer. This will of course be subject to employment law in the usual way. It is available to employees on the payroll from 28th February 2020. All UK businesses are eligible, ‘any employer on the country, small or large, charitable or non-profit’ to use the Chancellor’s words. The scheme pays a grant (not a loan) to the employer. The grant will be paid to the employer through a new online system which is being built for this purpose. The employer will pay the employee through payroll, using the Real Time Information (RTI) system as usual, as required by the employment contract. This contract may be renegotiated but that is a matter for employment law. So RTI system reporting of payroll will continue as normal.

38

• Relevant employees must be designated as furloughed employees. • Employers will submit information to HMRC through a new online portal.

Maximum grant will be calculated per employee and is the lower of: • 80% of ‘wages’. The notes published so far, use the phrase ‘wage for all employment costs up to a cap of £2,500 per month’. It is our understanding that this includes employers’ NIC and pension contributions. Wages will be determined by reference to a defined period (yet to be announced). • £2,500 per month.

Free Initial Consultation We offer a free initial consultation to assess the level of accountancy services you require.

For example: X Ltd employs Mr A at an annual salary of £24,000, so £2,000 per month. Mr A has opted out of auto enrolment. Each month, Mr A currently receives net pay of £1,665 which is after deducting PAYE of £191 and employees NIC of £144. On this salary, the employer pays employers’ NIC of £174. The available grant for the employer is the lower of (a)80% of (£2,000 + £174), and (b)£2,500 So a grant of £1,739. The cash required by X Ltd to furlough based on maintaining the existing salary is £435 per month. It is a matter for employment law whether the employer is required to pay this top up. Discussions with employees may have agreed that the employee has agreed to a different arrangement during their furlough.

Hopefully this provides some much needed detail at last. There is also some good advice from ACAS https:// www.acas.org.uk/coronavirus and from the FSB. https://www.fsb.org.uk/campaign/covid19.html
