Mikes letter So this week see’s the launch of our new competition to win £250 straight to your bank account which we think could really come in handy during this pandemic. Simply search for the red letters and numbers within each magazine for the next 4 weeks, and don’t worry if you miss an edition as at the bottom of this page will be links to back issues of our magazines so you can catch up should you miss anything. Straight to business then, as we see more and more relaxed laws over the next few weeks I feel we may see another spike in the number of cases of the virus especially as the government started to reveal details of its manual track and trace system and for now this is without a contact-tracing app. I am a bit confused as we are on level 4 but applying level 3 relaxations . Is this to quiet us and remove the issue with Dominic Cummings thus taking our thoughts away from the matter and focusing on what we can do as a nation with this new found freedom we seem to have. One final thought though.. Clap for the NHS should it stop now? Or should we find a new focus, maybe donating £1 to the NHS. Would you think it would be as popular?

BACK GARDEN BIRD WATCHING This spring we will have spent most of our time in our homes and gardens and so, by now, we may also be familiar with the regular wild visitors. Chances are you’ve been taking pleasure in putting seed onto a bird table and watching the different birds arriving through the day. Perhaps it has piqued your interest to know more about the familiar and unusual birds that you might have seen. If that’s the case, why not contribute to an ongoing survey on garden birds? Each week, all year round, for the past 25 years, ‘citizen scientists’ have recorded the birds and other wildlife visiting their gardens, enabling researchers at the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) to answer important questions about garden wildlife. The BTO Garden BirdWatch offers an opportunity to learn more about garden birds and other wildlife while contributing directly to BTO’s important scientific research on the value of gardens for wildlife. The organisation says: “The more we know about how wildlife uses our gardens, the more we can make our cities, towns, villages and individual gardens better for nature.” The survey involves simply keeping a list of the birds you see visiting your garden over the course of a wee, and then entering this into the BTO’s online recording system. You can also record other garden wildlife, such as butterflies and mammals.

6

Share your garden bird sightings to contribute to a national survey. Here’s how The Garden Bird Watch is normally run as a membership, with an annual fee of £17, that entitles you to a helpful book and regular magazines. The generous financial support of participants is what allows BTO to carry out its work monitoring garden wildlife and its scientific research. Membership also entitles you to access to the online recording system, a regular e-newsletter with information on recording and identifying garden wildlife, as well as access to the BTO’s team of wildlife experts, to answer your questions. Kate Risely, Garden Bird Watch Organiser at the BTO’s says: “A connection to nature is so important to our well-being, and the easiest place to watch and learn about wildlife is in our own gardens. We hope that this opportunity to join the Garden BirdWatch community will help people across the UK find new meaning in their garden birdwatching, to learn new things and to play a part in national research into our garden wildlife.”

The BTO is the UK’s leading bird research charity. A growing membership and up to 60,000 volunteer birdwatchers contribute to the organisation’s surveys, collecting information that underpins conversation action in the UK. The BTO’s work is funded by supporters, government trusts, industry and conservation organisations. At its offices is Suffolk, Scotland, wales and Northern Ireland, staff analyse and publicise the results of surveys and projects. www.bto.org

THE TRUTH BEHIND BRISTOL’S PAUPER CHILDREN More than 1,500 orphaned, destitute and abandoned children from Bristol were sent to Canada in Victorian times to get them off the streets of the city. It means an estimated 60,000 Canadians are believed to be descended from those children and many of them are now tracing their roots back to Bristol through the internet. The Bristol children were among around 100,000 child immigrants sent across the Atlantic between 1869 and 1939 from all over the UK; it’s estimated that 12% of present-day Canadians are descended from these “British Home Children”. Shirley Hodgson’s working life was devoted to the care and education of children across Bristol, where she worked in various schools, ending her career with a ten-year stint as head of Victoria Park Junior School in Bristol until she retired in 1992. She was introduced to the story of the British Home Children sent to Canada during a lecture in Exeter given by Dr Moira Martin of the University of the West of England. Little was known about the Bristol pauper children who were part of this exodus, so Shirley started investigating the organisations and individuals who played key parts in the education and emigration of the city’s street children.

The result of her painstaking research is a book Bristol’s Pauper Children revealing a tragic, little-known chapter in the city’s history. Some of Bristol’s pauper children were lucky; they were fed, clothed, educated and taught skills by church and charitable organisations, workhouses, reformatories and industrial schools, run mostly be well-meaning people like Mary Carpenter, Maria Rye and Annie Macpherson, with philanthropic intentions. When these institutions started to struggle to cope with the number of children in their care, emigration to Canada was considered the best option for some of these children. Many of them were sent to Canada to work as agricultural labourers or domestic servants, but far from the better life promised, many suffered loneliness and despair. In many cases the children were sent abroad without the consent of their parents and were separated from their siblings, prompting then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown to make a statement in the House of Commons in 2010 in which he said these children had been “robbed of their childhoods.” He said the UK had turned its back on them instead of caring for them, and had ignored their cries for help. Copies of the book can be bought from www.bristolbooks.org

Bristol East MP kicks off new bid to reopen St. Annes Park Station Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy, together with Brislington East Councillor Tim Rippington, has formally submitted a bid to reopen St. Anne’s Park Station to the Government’s Restoring Your Railway Ideas Fund.

Cllr Tim Rippington said:

The fund was announced by the Department for Transport in January of this year to progress the development of proposals to reopen closed railway lines and stations. Kerry, together with local residents, has spearheaded a longstanding campaign to reopen the station, working with Bristol City Council, the West of England Combined Authority, Greater Brislington Together and local Brislington East representative Councillor Tim Rippington.

“Our area has been poorly served by public transport for some years. This was one of my campaigning priorities in the January by-election where I was elected. It's great to think that we could finally be making some progress to change things”.

The original station closed in 1970 and the area is currently poorly served by public transport despite a large population and further plans for growth. A new station could give rapid commuter access into central Bristol, Keynsham and Bath, relieving pressure on the busy A4. Kerry McCarthy MP said: “I’m really pleased to have sponsored the formal bid to reopen St. Anne’s Park. It's an issue I’ve been campaigning on for many years, and it has the support of many residents, as well as Bristol City Council. “Reopening the station has the potential to transform travel in the area: reducing gridlock, improving air quality and opening up access to other areas of our city for residents. It's high time the Government listened to residents and got this project underway”.

“Local residents have led a longstanding campaign to reopen St Anne’s, and I know just how important this project is to them.

Notes to Editors Further information on the scheme can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ re-opening-beeching-era-lines-and-stations/ideasfund-round-1-march-2020-update#next-steps St Anne’s is extremely poorly served by public transport despite having a large population (11,000 in Brislington East Ward), including a large new riverside housing development, and plans to grow (e.g. site of the current St Anne’s House). This station would give rapid commuter access into central Bristol (5 minutes vs. the current 30+), Keynsham and Bath, thus relieving some traffic on the busy A4 road where further housing development is expected. This week nearly half of Bristol’s 120 primary schools re-opened their doors to welcome children back to education. We said we would back teachers in deciding if schools were safe and I would like to thank school staff, teachers and governors for their efforts to ensure the steps they’ve taken to minimise the risk of coronavirus in schools to keep children and staff safe and prevent the spread of the virus and make crucial decisions on whether their schools could extend opening. We continue to support teachers in those decisions. We also understand that parents face a difficult decision on whether to send children back to school and I would like to reassure residents that there is no penalty if you have decided against it. I would also like to say that no parent should feel guilty if their family circumstances mean their child needs to be in school and that the council will continue to work closely with schools to protect children and support families. This week is Volunteers Week and we’re thanking all the people who have stepped forward to help fellow Bristol residents during the pandemic. Whether you have signed up via the Can Do website, are involved in a local voluntary group, or have just help out friends and neighbours – everyone’s kindness has helped thousands of people. Over the coming months we will still need volunteers as the longer term impact of lockdown, financial challenges and bereavement take their toll. Please consider signing up to the Can Do website today. Support for businesses Thousands of Bristol’s small businesses could miss out on grants worth up to £5,000 unless they apply for a special Covid-19 grant by midnight on Monday, 8 June. City businesses, including bed and breakfasts, charities and nurseries, are being urged to check their eligibility for a share of a £4.7m pot of special Covid-19 funding called Discretionary Grants, with fewer than 200 applications having been received so far. There is an online form to fill out on the council website if you think you are eligible. Full criteria can be found here.

24

We have also approved over £83.5m in small business grants supporting over 6,500 businesses in Bristol. This has included businesses such as Stay24 Ltd. Watch Stay24 Ltd’s video to hear from Managing Director, Laura, about the help she received. You can check if your business is eligible and apply for a business grant on the council website. Finally, we’re launching a new regular email for businesses in Bristol this week to make sure they receive comprehensive information, updates and news to help them through this uncertain time and beyond. Businesses can sign up to receive it here. Shops and markets From next week more shops and markets will be open for business. Both businesses and customers have a shared responsibility to practice social distancing and we are working with the business community to help them put measures in place to keep staff and customers safe. St Nick’s open air markets partially reopened today with small number of stalls available with limited opening hours for the time being. As with shops, social distancing measures will be in place and traders have all been supported to introduce these measures for your safety. See the St. Nicholas Market Facebook page for the latest information. Whilst this is positive for the economy, the relaxation comes with its own challenges including the fact that more people will need to travel for work and shopping. We are asking residents to please consider cycling, walking, getting a taxi or driving to your destination. Bus and train services remain reduced to improve social distancing and should be reserved for key workers and those who have no alternative. For the safety of our city, our message remains: • • • • • •

Stay home as much as possible Maintain handwashing and good personal hygiene Leave the area if it is busy Stagger the times you are traveling/ going out Prioritise public transport for key workers and those who have no alternative

SECOND DEATH CAFÉ PLANNED AFTER SUCCESS OF FIRST Bristol’s second virtual Death Café is being planned “It is lovely to see people opening up and really for later this month following the sell-out success of getting strength from joining in with the Death Café, especially when so many are isolated at home. The the first in May. event is also great for care professionals who have been really tested in recent months.” Bristol Memorial Woodlands, just north of Bristol, is a regional funeral centre where funerals are held followed by burials and tree planting to create a natural woodland held in trust for future generations. Families can mourn their loved ones in a woodland setting and revisit for years to come, enjoying picnics and walks. Christopher Baker, who created Bristol Memorial Woodlands, said: “Death is inevitable for all of us and yet there is still a taboo around talking about it. We should all be discussing what we want to happen to our bodies after we die; what sort of funeral we would like to have and our hopes and fears around death.

Organised by Bristol Memorial Woodlands, a funeral venue near Alveston, the Death Café gives people the chance to discuss their thoughts and feelings around death and dying with the help of expert Mireille Hayden. Taking place on Thursday 18 June, the event has limited spaces available and will be run on video conferencing service Zoom, as a way to support conversations about grief, dying and end of life, at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has brought mortality to the forefront of everyone’s mind.

“We are pleased in these turbulent times to be hosting this event where people can discuss aspects of dying.” The Virtual Death Café will take place on Thursday 18 June from 10am until 12 noon.

18th June 10am 12 noon

Mireille Hayden, of Gentle Dusk, an organisation providing preparation and support for end of life care, has run Death Café's all over the country for many years and has adapted her sessions to be run virtually since lockdown. Mireille said: “The Death Café will be a group directed discussion about death with no agenda from me. “We had planned a Death Café Picnic at Memorial Woodlands for this Summer but after lockdown we decided to host a virtual event instead. That event in May was a sell-out success so we wanted to hold another as soon as possible. “At this time when people are faced with deaths every day because of Covid-19 it is more important than ever that we have proper discussions about all the issues that we have about death and dying.

CORONAVIRUS HITTING DIVORCING COUPLES IN THE POCKET The economic repercussions of the covid-19 crisis are far-reaching with businesses and individuals suffering financially across the UK. For those considering or going through divorce or separation proceedings the financial impact is even greater, with most ending up with less than if they had divorced at the beginning of the year. Expert family and divorce lawyer Chris Longbottom from Clarke Willmott LLP, says the impact on finances during these times should be a key consideration for couples and that now, more than ever, they should access professional advice before making any decisions. Longbottom said: “The crisis is affecting separating couples from all walks of life and in the vast majority of cases this means that final settlements are much lower than they would be at other times. “People are losing their jobs, being declared bankrupt and losing assets which means there is less ‘in the pot’ when agreeing settlements.

“Business owners are particularly affected and during this already stressful and uncertain time, full financial disclosures needed by the court create a lot of additional work when the financial impact of the economy on their status is unclear. “It is notoriously difficult to value a shareholding in a business at the best of times, which is why we are advising people to getting professional help from solicitors, accountants and in some cases forensic accountants, at the earliest opportunity. “At this time business owners may see the value of their assets decline so it is important for both parties to be aware of this from the outset.” Chris Longbottom is a partner and family law team manager at Clarke Willmott LLP. Specialising in complex financial cases, Chris provides advice locally, nationally and internationally covering financial settlements on divorce, unmarried family disputes, divorce and separation planning. Clarke Willmott is a national firm with regional offices in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Southampton and Taunton. For more information visit www.clarkewillmott.com

Your Garden In June

Come June, its pretty safe to say that the risk of frost is behind us – summer is on its way and it’s time to make sure the garden is in good shape for the summer months. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. This makes June a particularly busy month for the green-fingered among us with lots of planting, pruning, maintenance and weeding to do done. All our hard work is sure to be worth the effort though as we sit back and admire the onset of summer in our garden.

Plant of the month: Rose

The essential gardening jobs for June

Plant baskets and containers Now the risk of morning frost has passed, its time to plant up your containers, hanging baskets and planters. If you already had them growing in the greenhouse, or hardening off outside during the day, then It’s now safe to move them out to their summer position – choosing a sunny spot will ensure you get the best from them. Trim any excess growth to maintain shape and deadhead regularly to encourage flower growth. Water at least once a day or more frequently when it’s hot dry and windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your plants to thrive. Mow lawns once a week The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. To make sure your lawn looks its best for summer, apply a spring fertiliser onto established lawns now.

34

A good feed and a regular close cut will encourage extra growth making your lawn thick and lush. Don’t forget to reduce cutting frequency and raise mower blades if we have a drought.

Why should you plant them? Roses suit all kinds of gardens –they come in huge variety of colours, shapes and scents. They can be grown in beds, borders and containers and can be grown up walls, fences and trellis.

Care for your roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. You will need to keep an eye out for black spots and aphid attacks. Both of these will need treating immediately to ensure that too much damage doesn’t occur. Black spot is a serious disease for roses caused by a fungus which infects the leaves and reduces plant vigour, and should be treated at first sign of infection with a fungicide. Green fly are sapsucking creatures that can alter the growth of roses, also decreasing their vigour. Treat roses that are being attacked by aphids with an insecticide.

How should you plant them? Roses grown in containers can be planted all year round – check the label when buying though as their preferred spot and conditions will vary depending on the type. Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the root ball to a spade’s depth, dig in a good quality compost and fork in a general fertiliser.

Deadhead any faded rose blooms to encourage fresh buds to grow and apply a rose fertiliser after the first flowering.

Plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container, firm down and water well. Apply a rose fertiliser every spring for amazing displays of colour.

Bristol hotels focus on thanking NHS staff Two Bristol hotels are offering complimentary rooms to NHS staff in the city as a way of thanking them for their heroic efforts during the Coronavirus crisis. DoubleTree by Hilton Bristol City Centre and Hampton by Hilton Bristol City Centre are, between them, offering 25 complimentary rooms to those most essential workers. DoubleTree has been open since the middle of May providing accommodation for essential workers, and Hampton is due to re-open on Monday (June 8).

“Hotel teams have received training on enhanced cleaning regimes and, of course, social distancing measures are in place. “We validate key worker status prior to, and on, arrival. “We provide hand sanitiser stations throughout our hotels and have contactless check-in and check-out facilities. “Anyone who takes up our offer of accommodation will also be able to have a free ‘Grab and Go’ breakfast.

Between them, the two sites – both part of the Focus Hotels group – are now offering complimentary accommodation for NHS workers.

“Lunch and dinner services are also available for guests to purchase, with all food delivered directly to bedrooms.”

Both hotels are within easy reach of the BRI in the city centre.

“Understandably, reducing the risk of spreading the virus, and doing everything possible to ensure the safety of staff and guests is a top priority.

It is hoped – subject to rulings by the Government – that the hotels may be able to start welcoming back other guests sometime next month. In the meantime, they would be delighted to welcome NHS staff and have been working hard to ensure that their sites are as safe as possible. Peter Cashman, Chief Executive Officer of Focus Hotels, said, “We have implemented the strictest guidelines in order to ensure the safety of our staff and our guests.

36

“That’s why we’ve been working closely with the Hilton CleanStay initiative, which is a new program which aims to deliver an industry-defining standard of cleanliness and disinfection, and with Clifton Environmental Services. “While we hope to be able to welcome many guests – old and new – in the near future, we are pleased to be able to offer these complimentary rooms now to NHS staff in Bristol.

LOCAL CHARITY LOSES ITS BELOVED FOUNDER

Jecca Brook, 1937-2020 It is with great sadness that Campden Home Nursing announces the loss of its beloved founder, Jecca Brook (1937-2020) who passed away last week, very peacefully, with her family around her. Her death is a huge loss to her family, the charity and the community of Chipping Campden. She was a well-known and dearly loved local lady, having nursed hundreds of people in the area, since starting the charity in 1990. Hundreds have paid tribute to her online, praising her kindness and generosity, as well as her sense of humour. Jecca Brook was aged 17 when she began a career in nursing, and in the late 1980’s her training in palliative care helped her nurse both of her parents who died peacefully in their own home. Jecca’s experience of making her parents’ end of life as comfortable, homely and personal as possible prompted her to want to extend this type of nursing to others in her community. In 1990, she approached two GP’s with the idea of nursing terminally ill patients in their own homes, and the idea of Campden Home Nursing took shape. Jecca raised £3,000, which she achieved with the help of some generous donations, and fundraising events, such as concerts, cake sales. She even baked her own bread to raise money for her vision of a local service which could provide end of life care.

Campden Home Nursing is now a thriving local charity, headed by nine trustees, six operational staff and a team of 23 nurses. Many volunteers help in the offices and Campden Home Nursing’s charity shop at Lower High Street and are crucial to the charity’s success. Last year, the charity nursed 178 patients and provided 5,386 free registered nurse hours to the community. This year, Campden Home Nursing is delighted to celebrate its 30th anniversary. Helen Makaritis, General Manager of Campden Home Nursing said: “All of us will miss Jecca terribly. She visited often and she loved to hear all the charity’s developments. I know that she was incredibly happy and proud of the work being done by our amazing nursing and bereavement teams and of how much the charity has grown to support so many more patients and families over the years. We will continue to build and strengthen what we have, and to develop new services in her memory.” A new portrait of Jecca, generously donated by local artist, Andrew Fergusson, will soon hang in pride of place at the office headquarters in Chipping Campden.

Is This a Good Time to Buy Your First Home in Bristol? Should you wait to buy your first home in Bristol or buy now? What sort of mortgages are available? What sort of deposit is required? These are questions all Bristol buyers are asking at the moment, yet this week I would like to focus on Bristol first time buyers and what it means directly and indirectly to Bristol homeowners looking to move up the Bristol property ladder and Bristol buy to let landlords. Well quite frankly, to answer that question it’s contingent on what Bristol property you are looking to move into and even more significantly, how long you are hoping to live in that property. We have many armchair economists and even professional economists predicting Armageddon when it comes to the property market, yet the Bristol (and UK) property market is essentially very sound. Don’t forget the Chancellor himself, George Osborne warned that if we voted to leave the EU two things would happen. Firstly, the UK property market would crash and property values would drop by 18% in the two years after the vote. Secondly, there would be an ‘economic shock’ to the country’s economy that would increase the cost of mortgages (through increased interest rates as there would be a run on the Pound). UK GDP rose by £132bn in the two years after the referendum and interest rates actually dropped locally, with regard to property values … Lloyds have predicted an enormous 30% fall in property prices over the next 36 months whilst Savills have suggested a short dip of 5% during the summer, based on very low transactions numbers, with property prices bouncing back to be just over 15% higher in 5 years’ time. This assumes that the UK plc economic downturn is short & sharp, and that no substantial gap opens up between supply and demand in the property market (i.e. everyone doesn’t dump their property market all at the same time).

40

Yet, the circumstances of the 2008/9 property crash were fundamentally different to today. Many ‘armchair economists’ assume there will be a re-run of the 2008/9 and 1988 property crashes in the coming 12 months in terms of house value falls. Yet, dissimilar to the last recession, this dip has not been led by previous years of strong property price growth like the other two crashes. House prices in many parts of the UK have been down in the last 12 months. You would think Bristol first-time buyers who have already saved their deposit could grab a bargain in the coming months, you would believe they would have less competition in the market because of landlords holding back buying additional rental properties. This is because of the press speculation that rent arrears are sky high from tenants who are unable to pay their rent. Yet evidence from many professional bodies in the private rental sector state rent arrears across the whole of the Country are appearing to be very low indeed, despite Covid-19. Interestingly, the firm Yomdel who handles ‘web live chat’ and ‘phone support’ for thousands of estate and letting agents have reported national activity is higher than the two months of the Boris Bounce (in January and February 2020). The number of new buyer enquiries for the last two weeks is double (108.9% higher to be precise) than the 2019 yearly rolling average. New landlord enquiries are 32.1% higher than the 2019 average and tenants are 150.1% higher than the 2019 average ... these are all great signs and go against the doom monger economists.

My best advice to all Bristol property buyers is, be they second time buyers, first time buyers, landlords … whatever number buyers, they should buy with a medium-term view of future Bristol property values, instead of an expectation of always looking to making a quick few pounds flipping a property (i.e. selling it quickly). Let’s not forget that mortgage interest rates are another important factor: they are at a 325-year low, so borrowing money has never been so inexpensive. If you know you are going to be living in your first (or second) Bristol home for five years and you want the peace of mind of knowing precisely what your mortgage payments will be, then it’s very attractive. At the time of writing, Barclays are offering any first-time buyer a 95% mortgage on a 5-year fixed rate of 2.95%. Many lenders are lending money even if you are on furlough, yet you may find you won’t be able to borrow as much pre Covid-19. Interestingly, some mortgage companies will even take into account total income, where your employer is topping up the Government’s furloughed amount, whilst other lenders will consider mortgage applications on a case-by-case basis. The best advice I can give is, don’t assume what you can or can’t borrow. Speak to a whole of market mortgage broker, to see what is possible – not what your friend on Facebook tells you, what you can or can’t borrow.

You only need to put down a 5% deposit for the property you would like to buy If you think about it, it’s inconsequential if Bristol property values drop or not, or if they do drop whether they bounce back quickly (or not as the case maybe) because it’s impossible to know the bottom of the property market. I would say if you find the right Bristol property for you, at the price that feels right, that will be your home together and you are going live in that Bristol property for the next five to ten years, it’s not a bad time to be buying. It is like waiting for the next piece of tech – there will always be a better model or an assumed better time. We are talking about your home here – a home for you and your partner and family, be that your kids, dog, cat, pet or favourite pot plant because …

Spending money on rent is all wasted money – at least when you buy your own home, you start to pay your mortgage off from day 1 So many first-time buyers use the Bank of Mum and Dad to help with their deposit, yet I have spoken to many parents who wouldn’t want to interfere in their mature children’s life and subsidise day to day expenditure, yet are embarrassed to offer their help with the deposit. If you don’t ask …you don’t get! Article by Jake Gready Nexa Bristol Email: Jake@nexabristol.com Mobile 0780 777 8350 Tel; 0117 3634411

Covid-19 Memorial Garden to be created at Westerleigh Crematorium A memorial garden is to be created at Westerleigh Crematorium, near Bristol, as a tranquil place where people can come to remember loved ones who died during the Covid-19 pandemic and pay tribute to those who sacrificed so much to help others who were sick, isolated or vulnerable. The memorial garden is one of 34 to be created across England, Scotland and Wales by Westerleigh Group, the UK’s largest independent owner-operator of crematoria and cemeteries. It will be beautifully landscaped with colourful, seasonal planting making up a rainbow – which, for many, has been a symbol of hope. The focal point will be a stone memorial individually carved by Westerleigh’s highly skilled stonemasons. Roger Mclaughlan, Chief Executive of Westerleigh Group, explained: “Over the centuries, people have commemorated significant, life-changing events by creating memorials to honour those who have died. We wanted to do something similar to acknowledge the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on the local communities we serve. “Our local crematoria and cemeteries have very close links to the people who live and work in the surrounding areas. We are all too aware of the impact this pandemic has had and will continue to have on them, which is why we felt it was appropriate to create a permanent and lasting memorial in the grounds of our crematoria. It will be a special place where people can come to remember and reflect, and to give thanks to the wonderful way that the NHS, key workers and whole communities pulled together during this crisis. “We hope these memorial gardens will be well received and as we move forward, we want our communities to join us in our plans and help to shape them. The gardens will be a permanent memorial of these times for future generations.” Work is expected to begin on the stone memorials in the Autumn with garden landscaping taking place in early Spring 2021, shortly before the memorial gardens are opened. More details will be revealed over the coming months.
