Welcome to this weeks magazine!!

Bristol is officially in Tier 1+, so, what does that mean in reality terms for us Bristolian’s then? Well It seems nothing, as all its created is a task force that can be more en-forceful with the rule of 6 and current guidelines. Do you really think this is going to make a difference to those who do not believe they will catch coronavirus or even think this virus is real! I have visited many places on my rounds in Bristol delivering our magazines and the general feel from a select few people is that the virus is a conspiracy, and that if they catch it they will survive it any as it’s only the elderly and those with underling medical conditions that will be at high risk of a fatality. Whatever your thoughts are on this subject surly the best thing to do is just be mindful of our actions and keep our distance as much as possible. Then maybe just maybe we will stay out of tier 2 and stricter restrictions. Rant over! Halloween this Saturday one of my favourite times of the year as I love the costumes and seeing the kids dressed up in their crazy outfits. My favourite must be the trusty bin liner outfit lol. Anyway, I hope everyone taking part in Halloween stays safe and socially distant.

End Child Food Poverty

‘The Liberal Democrats exist to build and

safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.’ This is part of the preamble to the constitution of the Liberal Democrats and the reason so many of us were angry this week when MPs at Westminster voted not to offer free school meals to vulnerable children during the school holidays. Andrew said, ‘As a recipient of free school meals when I was younger, I know what a difference it made to my mum, who was struggling to raise three kids on her own’. Jos added, ‘It’s truly shocking that in the 21st century, we still have millions of children living in food poverty’.

Following the vote in Parliament, the Bristol Liberal Democrats wrote to Mayor Marvin Rees imploring him to explore the possibility of Bristol City Council paying for free school meals for poorer families instead. Many local councils around the country have already stepped forward to stop child holiday hunger by funding free school meals themselves, including Kensington & Chelsea, Wigan, Liverpool, Greater Manchester, Redbridge, Southwark, Rochdale, Royal Greenwich, Portsmouth and many more. Bristol has 10,835 school children who are eligible for free school meals. 4

We want to stop them from going hungry over the holidays and if the government refuses to

uphold its moral obligation to feed hungry children, the Bristol Lib Dems believe the duty falls to the Council. Cllr. Tim Kent, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Education and Councillor for Hengrove & Whitchurch Park wrote, “Dear Mayor Rees, I am sure you share my disappointment in the Government and their voting down of the reasonable proposal that children entitled to free school meals should continue to receive a free school meal over the holidays during the pandemic. We are all aware of the issue of child poverty, including food poverty, and although food poverty amongst children is unfortunately not new the pandemic has made the crisis much worse. It is an absolute travesty for children to go hungry, on any day of the year. The absence of any support equivalent to free school meals in the holidays is a long overlooked anomaly, and now families face the threat of future lockdowns too. The government spent £100M’s on the Eat Out to Help Out scheme in August - which many people took advantage of. But the far lower cost of feeding our most vulnerable has been shirked.

I know some local councils are considering stepping in. We have over 10,000 children who receive free school meals in our city - we should not let them be punished by a Government more interested in political fights rather than doing the right thing.

All the best, Tim Kent Lib Dem Education Spokesperson

Rather than wait for the Council to respond, many local businesses have taken it upon themselves to provide free meals for children instead. Here in Brislington West the Lodekka Pub on Bath Road and Crispin’s on Sandy I note that this policy of expanding free school meals over the holidays is supported Park Road are both offering to help and we would like to express our sincere gratitude by the Child Food Poverty Task Force, supported by Marcus Rashford and many leading for their generosity, especially as many in the hospitality and catering sector have already food suppliers and producers. had a difficult year. Ultimately though, the Can I ask you to urgently consider stepping responsibility for helping the poorest and in and pledging that Bristol City Council will most vulnerable in our society should fall on provide these free meals (or vouchers) over the government and not church groups, charithe holidays if the Government will not? ties and private businesses. I hope you will consider this matter urgently and demonstrate to the Government what compassionate leadership looks like.

NEW EVALUATION OF BRISTOL AND THE SLAVE TRADE The perfect Christmas stocking-filler for those inspired by the emergence in 2020 of Black Lives Matter, might be the compelling new account of Bristol’s controversial role in the slave trade in a lavishly-illustrated new book, Slavery And Bristol, by acclaimed local historian Gary M Best. “I believe this history will not only inform readers but deeply and profoundly make them question the way we live today,” said Gary Best.

Then it focuses on an autobiography written in 1796 by an ex-slave, Olaudah Equiano, which provides a harrowing personal account not only of the horrors of his enslavement but also of the racial prejudice facing freed slaves.  At a time when the role of black people is being reassessed, Equiano provides a fascinating example of a man who refused to become just a victim and who ended his life campaigning on behalf of the enslaved and creating the first black anti-slavery organisation, the Sons of Africa.

“It is not just about what happened in the past but how that still shapes the world today. First and foremost, I have tried to make this a book The central part of the book examines Bristol’s misnamed eighteenth-century about individuals and their response to an ‘golden age’ when it was at the forefront of inhumanity that almost beggars belief.” Britain’s involvement in the slave trade. Many readers will be shocked to learn the truth The book opens with a look at how most behind the creation of a large number of the societies have chosen to embrace slavery historic buildings in and around Bristol, and and how Bristol first became involved. about how profits from slavery shaped the commercial development of everything from coal mining and chocolate production to canals and railways.

6

But it is the personal stories that make this book so readable and gripping. The histories of many enslaved people are examined, including some who were brought to Bristol, but Best also vividly covers the stories of Edward Colston and the other slave traders, the shocking lifestyle of the Bristol slave ship captains and their crews, and the role played by Bristol plantation owners who relied on slave labour. The book provides a fascinating account of the growth of the anti-slavery movement, with Best providing a heartening illustration of how individuals can make a difference and instigate change in society. Readers will find within its pages a fascinating range of memorable and thought-provoking comments from voices both past and present.

Gary M Best is the historical consultant at the New Room in Bristol. All proceeds from Slavery and Bristol will go towards helping fund the New Room’s educational work for schools, helping the young understand Bristol’s role in the slave trade and the issues it has left us with today.    Published in hardback by New Room Publications, Slavery and Bristol costs £19.99 and is available from the New Room bookshop, as well as other local bookshops and online through Amazon or www.tangentbooks.co.uk

Finally this eye-opening work concludes with a chastening account of how slavery survived its abolition and generated a racism that, shamefully, remains prevalent today, illustrated by events such as the 1960’s Bristol Bus Boycott, the 1980’s St Paul’s riots and - most recently - the Black Lives Matter campaign. It challenges Bristolians to tackle the problems we still face.

CAROLYN MAGSON’S LOCAL UPDATE First of all I just really wanted to say how blown away I’ve been by the response to #endchildfoodpoverty.

If you’re a business or food outlet that can help, please email coronavirus@bristol.gov. uk. And if you need support this weekend or half term, call the #WeAreBristol free helpline on 08006940184 OTHER NEWS So, I’m Carolyn Magson, one of the Labour councillor candidates for Brislington West and every few weeks I do an update on what I’ve been up to locally;

I think we all agree this issue goes way beyond simple politics, it’s about basic human rights, dignity and compassion. After the government voted against extending the free school meals scheme for those in need this half term, like many I was desperate to hep but I have more than my usual caring responsibilities at the moment, so I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to those who stepped forward to take the lead on this, particularly the two amazing women who organised local community collections, meaning that myself and others could drop food off without having to wait until the designated days. And as the week has gone on, person after person and business after business have come forward to help and support from all across Brislington and beyond. I’m completely moved and humbled by this instant empathy and response and feel very lucky to be part of this incredible community. Thanks to BCC who have pledged that no child should go hungry this holiday

options, so I’ve worked out a possible route within Hungerford Open Space.

For those who haven’t visited this amazing place I’d highly recommend it, it’s a beautiful space. This nature reserve runs from Hungerford to Stockwood so I got together with candidate for Stockwood Sam Fox to chat through possibilities and do a quick litter pick in the playground while we were there!

It’s even tougher now to find venues with schools and community centres struggling to meet their own needs but the team are working on re starting the sessions at St Brendon’s and we’re looking at other venues or interested groups to do a plan for the next 6-12 months. Please contact me on Carolyn@labourbristol.co.uk or message me via Facebook if you’d like to be involved or know of any youth people who may benefit

We’ll be talking to community groups in both Hungerford and Stockwood about how we can develop some ideas here and specifically to investigate how local residents might feel HALLOWEEN about a Park Run here. The official advice from BCC is to stay at I have a background in successful bid writing home and not partake in any trick and treatand am happy to lend my time to supporting ing this year to avoid the spread of COVID. any initiatives of this nature. One of my proudest moments as a candidate was securing an Impact Grant to roll out some youth sessions across Brislington with the award winning charity Empire Fighting Chance. Empire Fighting Chance provide a unique combination of fitness training, mental health support and mentoring to young people both in Bristol and beyond. After an intensive 3-stage process we were awarded £16,000 early this year and the team rolled out some sessions at St Brendon’s. Of course lockdown stopped play but we were able to offer some outdoor sessions in the summer.

PLEASE SUPPORT SPLAT ON FRIDAY 30TH! SPLAT (Sandy Park Locals and Traders) are doing a community event on Friday 30th at 4pm in Sandy Park to raise funds for Christmas lights along Sandy Park. From my understanding they’ll be a Zumba Flashmob, hot dogs, hot chocolate and sweet treats. Social distancing is a priority for those who attend please. I think we all need a bit of Christmas sparkle so hope to see you there! 9

FoodStock 2020 Launched by Bristol Charity Bristol-based food charity, FareShare South West, has announced FoodStock 2020: a campaign with the aim to build a stockpile of emergency food with the infrastructure to deliver it to critical frontline organisations through a difficult winter. The FoodStock 2020 operation, which will source food from across the food industry at scale, aims to build a stockpile big enough to distribute food for 1 million meals in just 3 months and will be housed at the charity’s secondary warehouse near Ashton Gate Stadium – formerly used by Dreams Beds. Julian Mines, CEO of FareShare South West says: “The move now to amass a stock of ambient food and begin planning the logistics of redistributing is essential to make sure our city and wider region does not go hungry in the difficult winter months ahead. We’re not waiting until a full lockdown hits or until demand spikes to astronomical levels. We’re preparing now. Whilst we hope the economic fallout and impact of a second wave are not as catastrophic as some predict, we’d be naïve not to prepare for that. Expanding by 5 times our capacity back in March 2020 to meet sudden need was only possible thanks to temporary infrastructure afforded by a number of organisations, funders offering temporary support and by financial donations from the public.

10

That’s now ended, and we need to ensure we have the funds, infrastructure and resource this time round to keep people fed in the winter ahead. This time around we must be more strategic, coordinated and targeted to make sure those in the most critical situations are prioritised, and we want to go further in serving and supporting frontline groups. We’re relying on the power of Bristol – a city brimming with care and compassion – to come together to help us get this centralised emergency solution to the food insecurity we anticipate, off the ground. To confirm, we are not looking for donations of food but instead for funding from local businesses, public donations where people feel able, and even volunteering – including to help us operate a food parcel packing hub, located on the mezzanine level of our secondary warehouse. This space will centralise food parcel packing for the city and wider region and allow our food to go to organisations and initiatives of all sizes.” The FareShare South West team are encouraging the Bristol public to keep an eye on their social media platforms so as not to miss upcoming announcements or calls for support as they respond to the emerging winter crisis. New plans submitted for residential-led redevelopment of St Catherine's Place Bedminster New plans to kick start the long-awaited regeneration of East Street, Bedminster and deliver 180 much-needed new homes have been submitted to Bristol City Council for approval. St Catherine's Place Shopping Centre and its East Street home have long been in need of refurbishment and investment but proposals for a full-scale mixed-use redevelopment of the site, along with 205 new homes, were rejected in January this year.

Designed by Bristol architects Stride Treglown, the development will offer a full range of one, two and three-bedroom homes in three new buildings on the site, including a 14-floor building on the corner of Dalby Avenue. This is three storeys lower than the previously proposed building, smaller in footprint and set further back from the road. The height of the adjacent building to the rear is also stepped down to match the level of the existing Catherine's House. The new pedestrian Mill Lane Greenway will reinstate a historic route through the site. Designed to celebrate the area's industrial heritage, it will include planting, cobble stones and historic mill stones recovered during archaeological investigations on site.

The revised scheme will offer larger areas of public open space including a new pocket Since then, Bedminster-based owner and depark on Mill Lane, providing accessible green veloper Firmstone has worked with an entirely space to rest, play and socialise. There will be new team of Bristol architects and planning increased private amenity space for the new consultants along with local stakeholders homes including a new courtyard garden. to design and develop new proposals that directly address the concerns of planners and A new and inviting public entrance into St a group of local residents. Lane.

Once this first phase is complete, Firmstone will continue with the Mill Lane and Dalby Avenue buildings whilst refurbishing the retail units inside the shopping centre. Outline planning permission is also being sought to potentially convert the redundant vacant retail units in the centre of the site for alternative uses including residential in the longer term, should retail demand continue to decline. This will ensure any additional homes are effectively integrated in the wider design and regeneration. Bedminster BID, which represents 350 local businesses, has also expressed its strong support for the proposals Simon Dicken, chair of Bedminster Business Improvement District (BID) said:

Francis Firmstone, director of Firmstone said: "Bedminster is a hugely popular, vibrant and exciting area of Bristol but it is in dire need of new homes and investment. Within walking distance of the city centre and home to a diverse community of residents and businesses, it is an important gateway to the wider Bedminster Green area, long earmarked for regeneration and development. "Our proposals for 180 much-needed and thoughtfully-designed new homes, along with the development's newly-refurbished retail units and shopping centre entrance, will help return East Street to its former glory, making it a thriving area for shopping, leisure and hospitality as we have seen on nearby North Street.

"We are very grateful to residents from the local area who have helped us to shape these new proposals. We have significantly reduced the height of the tallest building, moved it back from the road and added lots more public green space including a pocket park and courtyard garden. We're particularly excited about the newly-revived Mill Lane "As well as rebuilding or refurbishing the East Greenway which will create an attractive, Street shops and shopping centre entrance, landscaped traffic-free route through the development connecting East Street with the the scheme will also deliver much-needed wider Bedminster Green area and further new homes and bring additional footfall to Bedminster's businesses. The new Mill Lane increasing footfall." Greenway is a really exciting way to better connect East Street with the wider area, and The proposed scheme is in line with the parameters set out in the Bedminster Green along with the pocket park, will encourage Framework which was supported by Bristol people to spend time here." City Council's Cabinet in March 2019 and identifies St Catherine's Place as a site for new homes, including a tall building, to help solve Bristol's housing shortage. "The long-awaited redevelopment of St Catherine's Place is crucial to the wider regeneration of East Street and Bedminster. These proposals will help make this a thriving, vibrant shopping and leisure area once more, close to the city centre and serving the local community.

New partnership provides inspiring venue for media training One of the South West’s longest-running and best-known PR agencies, Empica, has teamed up with a hidden treasure of a venue to provide the perfect learning environment for its media training. Empica can now deliver a range of full and half-day media skills training and crisis management training courses within the spectacular setting of the Belmont Estate, near Bristol. The heritage country estate, nestling in the North Somerset countryside a short distance from Bristol’s Clifton Suspension Bridge, provides the perfect venue for the training.

Not only do the manicured gardens, woodland areas and panoramic views provide an inspiring setting, but in the current climate the venue offers plenty of room for the delivery of safe, socially-distanced, training courses. The day can be made even more memorable if businesses combine a half-day media training with some of the many activities that the estate itself offers, such as mindfulness, yoga, butchery or cooking with fire. Mr Powell said: “The Carriage House has been transformed into a superb training and entertaining facility. “Safe group training can be held, with outside interviews in the spectacular Walled Garden and terrace, if the weather permits. If not, there is plenty of room inside this exceptional venue.”

And for companies who want to incorporate some team-building and other activities alongside the essential training, the venue offers something to ensure candidates have an educational and enjoyable day out.

Empica’s experts create specially-tailored training courses to help individuals and organisations deliver their messages in a positive way and give them the skills and confidence – through practical sessions - to conduct effective broadcast media interviews.

Empica was launched in 1989 by Managing Director Martin Powell, and operates from offices in Wraxall, just outside Bristol, in addition to having an office in London.

Mr Powell added: “People are more likely to retain knowledge and new skills if they have had a memorable and enjoyable day’s training.

During a recent review of the firm’s media training, he was determined to find a venue that added a suitable sense of gravitas and was delighted to discover the solution right on Empica’s doorstep.

“Teaming up with the Belmont Estate as our home training centre gives us an inspiring setting in which to provide our training.”

He said: “For the past 30 years, we have travelled across England, hiring hotel conference rooms that are fairly featureless and offer nothing that inspires and stimulates candidates. “The superb Carriage House on the Belmont Estate provides a setting full of character and charm, which makes people sit up and take notice. “The Belmont Estate has to be one of the best-kept secrets in the region, and people we’ve already trained there were extremely impressed with the quality of the venue. 18

Gil Martin, from the Belmont Estate, said: “We have carefully and tastefully transformed the Carriage House into a flexible space for business events, and Empica were among the first to use this space for a crisis media training session. “We are very pleased to be building on the success of that session by linking up with our close neighbours to offer these valuable training packages to businesses.” For more information about the range of off-the-shelf and bespoke training that Empica offers, visit www.empica.com/training or call 01275 394 400.

ENERGY CUSTOMERS CAN SAVE £270 A YEAR WITHOUT CHANGING SUPPLIER SAYS BRISTOL’S FLIPPER BOSS

Millions of gas and electricity consumers cut could their bills by almost 25% without changing their energy supplier, according to Mark Gutteridge, boss of Bristol-based energy switch site Flipper. He says data from Ofgem shows the best deals available from the Big 6 suppliers are 24% cheaper than the average cost of their Standard Variable Tariffs (SVT). It means 11 million UK households currently on an SVT could each save around £270 just by moving to their current supplier’s best deal. Nailsea-based Mark, said: “Sadly, while many shops and supermarkets do reward you for loyalty, the same is not the case with energy firms. “If you’ve been with your current supplier for more than 12 months, it’s almost certain you’re on their standard tariff which will be one of the most expensive they offer. “Ofgem requires energy companies to put a message on your bill if you can save money by switching to another one of their tariffs, but unless you read every page of your bill in detail – and who does – you’re unlikely to spot this.” Flipper check the market for their members every month and switch them every time a saving of £50 a year is found – even if that’s to a new deal with their current supplier 20

.“It means we spot if their current supplier has introduced a new tariff that is cheaper than the deal they are on, then we switch them over straightaway.” Mark says almost 30% of Flipper customers have been ‘flipped’ to a better tariff with their current provider so far this year. “We’ve had a lot of feedback from people who are really surprised, but very happy, that we’ve saved them money without switching them to a new supplier. “It’s really important that people understand finding a better deal doesn’t have to mean moving to a different provider. “And as energy usage will increased dramatically over the next few months as winter approaches, so it’s crucial you check you on a good value energy deal now.” Unlike comparison sites who get paid commission by the energy providers for switching people to them, Flipper don’t take money from suppliers. Members pay an annual fee of £30 when they are switched for the first time; tariffs are checked every month and customers are automatically moved to a better tariff if they can save £50 a year.

Bakers Dolphin re-open their shops

A leading travel firm is making final preparations to re-open its two shops in the South West to help people plan their holidays for 2021. Bakers Dolphin is re-opening its store in The Arcade at Broadmead in Bristol on Monday (October 26) and its unit within Weston-super-Mare’s Sovereign Shopping Centre a week later. The company has just published its Summer 2021 UK & Continental Coaching Holidays brochure and its team of specialist advisors is looking forward to once again welcoming people back into their shops to help them find their perfect getaways for next year. The shops have been closed since March because of the Coronavirus pandemic but are now ready to welcome people back – in controlled conditions, of course. New screens have been installed in the stores and only two customers will be allowed in at any one time. They will also be required to sanitise their hands before entering the shops. Amanda Harrington, Sales and Marketing Director at Bakers Dolphin, said: “Our brochure is packed with fabulous destinations and we have included departures from January right through to October 2021. “We are so pleased to be able to re-open our shops. “We have a lot of customers who prefer talking to someone face-to-face to make their travel plans, rather than do it on the phone or the internet. Now, finally, we can welcome them back and help them find that perfect getaway for next year. “We fully understand that booking a holiday represents a significant financial commitment during these uncertain times, and we take this responsibility extremely seriously.

22

“As a fully-bonded tour operator, we can assure all our customers that their money is fully protected in the extremely unlikely event that we cannot meet our financial liabilities. “For additional reassurance, we are also now able to offer Covid-19 insurance holidays.” For several months, the Bakers Dolphin fleet of some 70 coaches was unable to operate because of lockdown restrictions. The company was then awarded the new national ‘Good To Go’ charter mark, which verifies that it follows all the government and industry health and safety requirements, and at the end of July was able to get back on the road. Amanda added: “Since then, we have successfully operated more than 60 holidays. We are delighted to be back on the road and the feedback we have received has been amazing. “We are so grateful to our customers for their continued support and loyalty during these times, which have been among the toughest in the history of this company, which has been running for more than 130 years. “We’re particularly grateful for the support from those customers who were not able to take the holidays they had hoped for in 2020 but who did not request refunds. Instead, they said they would want that money to go towards a holiday when they were able to go. “These customers gave a great vote of confidence to us, and we can’t thank them enough. “Hopefully, everyone will be able to have the holiday they want, need and have earned, in 2021.” As an added bonus, anyone who books a summer 2021 holiday of four days or more before 30 November 2020 will receive a discount of £15 per person. Details are included in your brochure. To get your brochure and to book your next holiday, visit www.bakersdolphin.com, call 01934 415 000 or visit one of their shops.

Shoppers warned to buy early for Christmas or miss out Shoppers are being urged to buy early this year for online Christmas gifts. With only 8 weeka to go before the big day, the online retail industry is gearing up for a huge surge in demand.

So how will retailers and logistics companies manage this huge potential uplift in the run up to Christmas? Top boss at a large delivery service said online: "It's been like Christmas for the last six months for us," said Mike Hancox, the boss of delivery firm Yodel. It is one of the UK's biggest parcel couriers handling more than 150 million packages a year. But it had to adapt quickly in March, even partnering with taxi firms at one stage to help deliver the extra packages.

It's warning that firms may struggle to cope if we leave all our festive shopping till the last minute.

Yodel's now preparing for a period of sustained demand this autumn and winter as shoppers flock online for convenience as social distancing restrictions remain in place.

In A Statement online earlier this week the industry body for online shopping said:

Job opportunities?

"We think the volumes are going to be really very excessive this year," said Andy Mulcahy from IMRG, the industry body for online retailers. "Whilst that in itself is not a problem, getting too much of it too close to Christmas is going to be a bit of a problem," he said. "If you can spread out your shopping and do quite a lot of it in November, maybe even a bit of it now, then that would really help."

It's adding 2,500 self-employed drivers and nearly 500 staff in its sorting centres across the UK to bolter its operations. "We think it will be the biggest online Christmas ever, by some way," Mr Hancox said. "Certainly at Yodel it will be our biggest ever year. We're planning for success and I think every other delivery carrier will be expecting the same." He's planning on handling a million extra parcels in the busiest week.

Even before lockdown, online sales in the first months of 2020 were roughly 5% higher than last year.

But with rising unemployment and uncertainty over future coronavirus measures, many families may feel less able or willing to spend.

No need to panic buy though!!

John Lewis's online Christmas shop opened back in August after a spike in searches by customers.

Since Covid-19 hit, the numbers have soared, with growth rates of around 40-50%, according to IMRG. And they've remained high ever since. "At this point, I think we can expect an increase of at least 30% for the peak festive trading season, but if stores have to close this might push to 50%, " Mr Mulcahy thinks. But he stressed that here's no need for shoppers to panic buy - as there's still plenty of time before the big day. 24

And it has already seen a surge in sales for some products. The company says sales of trees were up 233% at the end of last week, compared with the previous year. Christmas decorations, meanwhile, were up 156%. Who knows how jolly this festive season will be. But one thing seems clear, it will be the most digital one yet for shopping.

With high cholesterol and a risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, Mo decided it was time for a change. "I've experienced an overwhelming shift in both body and mind" There are many benefits I've felt on my WW journey so far. I was unaware of these benefits when I first embarked on this wonderful and transforming endeavour of self-discovery and fulfilment. My WW journey started in September 2018. At the time, I had no idea of the profound impact it would have on me, particularly the mental and physical transformation I would go through. It's definitely changed my life for the better. Prior to joining the programme I thought life was great: I had the best family & friends, a supportive partner and a great job, so what was I missing?! I didn’t actually realise I was missing anything until joining the WW programme. Since losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle, I've experienced this overwhelmingly positive shift in both body and mind. My confidence has soared and I believe in myself much more than I did.

The health implications that arise from being overweight are equally harmful to men and women, but for some reason they have been treated or thought of differently in the past. Men are not often associated with programmes such as WW, but there are lots of us who have found success on the programme. What I’ve found in the WW community is that we all go through things, and we can support each other through the good and the bad. Find out if you’re at risk for Type 2 diabetes Before starting my journey, I weighed nearly 18st, but was always a very active person and felt there were no issues with my weight. I was happy in myself, confident, and pretty content with the way things were. However looking back now, I know deep down I struggled with my addiction to junk food and portion control. I also did not address the deep discomfort I had with my clothes size. I often avoided shopping for new things because the things I liked did not come in my size in some of my favourite shops. “WW gives you the tools and knowledge to commit”

The WW programme offers you so much, and it’s so flexible that it can be tailored to fit any“Before joining WW, I was at risk of developone’s lifestyle. And I mean literally anyone! ing Type 2 diabetes” I’ve learnt a lot about myself along the way, Before I found WW, I had high blood pressure, and the priceless knowledge I have obtained high cholesterol, an alarming BMI reading and about the effects food nutrition has on me was at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes due both physically and mentally is powerful beto my weight and lifestyle. These readings at a yond measure. At the heart of any success is commitment, and you have to be committed medical appointment shocked me. At the risk to building the best version of yourself using of sounding like a cliché, if I knew then what I know now, I would’ve been motivated to make the tools and knowledge that WW gives you. changes sooner. I put myself at greater risk by overlooking so much when it came to my overall wellbeing. I conformed to age-old cultural male attitudes and stereotypes. I grew up believing that men must not talk openly about deep-rooted issues such as weight and body image. Luckily, I’m part of a generation that is now challenging this archaic notion as we make conscious positive strides to improve ourselves both as individuals and in society. 30

Exercise and moving more is very much a part of the WW programme, in addition to the food and nutrition element. There’s so much knowledge and support on offer, it would be extremely hard not to find something that works for you.

The programme is simple to follow and has an easy-to-use app, which is great, not to mention the amazing Coaches who make you feel special. You learn to do things your way and at your own pace whether it be yoga, running, walking or meditation for your mental wellbeing. You can absolutely find what you’re looking for on the WW app. Follow Mo and his partner Andri’s journey here! “I will continue to strive for more than just weight loss” I've lost more than 5st since the start of my WW journey, have been maintaining now for the last six months, and have completely transformed my body and my mindset. I feel great! As well as significantly reducing my exposure to weight-related health risks, I've also learnt some lifelong lessons and have experienced an overwhelmingly positive health shift in my body, mind and soul. But my journey doesn’t end here. I will continue to strive for more than just weight loss. Believe me when I say your journey starts here with WW. What are you waiting for?

How does your risk of Type 2 diabetes measure up? Your age, family history, ethnicity and weight can all put you at risk of getting Type 2 diabetes. Your local Healthier You service delivered for free (by WW) may be able to help you. Here you’ll get all the support you need to make positive lifestyle changes and lower your risk.

PLANNING A MEMORIAL WOODLAND RESTING PLACE An increasing number of people are buying burial plots in the South West so that they know where they will rest after death and be assured that their demise will not damage the environment.

Said Chris Baker: “Most people think we are running out of room for burials in the UK but that is just not true. There is a real desire to create new woodland habitats to replace those that have disappeared over the years and doing that through burial grounds, as we are doing, is a way to finance their creation.

Bristol Memorial Woodlands in South Gloucestershire, which is creating a 100-acre woodland burial ground just north of Bristol, “It also means that there are people with an say family plots have become popular once interest in maintaining those woodlands and again in a way not seen since Victorian times. their families rest there and that future generations will have a stunning, natural Chris Baker, founder of Bristol Memorial place to go to remember their ancestors. Woodlands said: “Greater environmental awareness seems to be driving a new desire “The local council crematorium is often very for people to be buried, rather than be functional and busy and not a place to sit and cremated. Burial is traditional and natural and remember loved ones. We also find that many returns a body into the ground without using people like the idea of knowing where they fossil fuels and without emissions from a will be buried – whether that is their body or chimney. an internment of ashes. “We are now finding people buying burial plots for family members as gifts and whole families wanting to be buried together and know that future generations will be able to gather there beneath the trees and remember them.” Traditional burials went into decline in the UK as a result of village churchyards becoming full and in the 20th century cremations became the norm for many communities. Changes in the way people mourn and look at death have seen a shift in attitudes.

32

“Some of the enquiries we are getting are from people who are just being practical and knowing that we all have to face death some time. Others are from people with a faith that requires them to be buried and they want to buy plots for their whole family.” Many faiths have always favoured burials and Bristol Memorial Woodlands has created a sacred Jewish burial site and a Muslim burial ground, designed under the guidance of religious community leaders. IL Gusto Italian Restaurant

For good Italian food, you could trek all the way into town and find a place that serves up a good Carbonara or a decent Lasagne. You could even go further a field to find that extra special Spaghetti Bolognese or mouth watering pizza? However I urge you not to do that, but instead take a trip to IL Gusto Ristorante located at the top of Rounceval Street in Chipping Sodbury. That is where I found myself last Saturday evening.Gusto, is a traditional Italian restaurant serving up all of the traditional classics you’d expect to find on and Italian menu. For me the benchmark for any half decent Italian restaurant has to be their Spaghetti Carbonara. Whilst Gustos Carbonara is delicious, their homemade lasagne is even better. It knocks the spots off of any lasagne that I have ever tasted anywhere else. it is phenomenal! To start though I had their mozzarella Carrozza which is a posh name for a grilled cheesesandwich. It’s nothing special but it’s pleasant enough and not to filling.

My companion had the squid rings and the whitebait. Being a food critic and needing to write a comprehensive review I felt it was my duty to have a nibble at theirs also. Both dishes passed with flying colours. Main course, Lasagne. This bubbling melting pot of stringy mozzarella, chunks of beef steak, perfectly cooked pasta and a seriously divine beef ragu is enough to send you to the next level of food heaven. Woven in between the layers is a delectable , creamy béchamel which compliments the ragu beautifully. I have to admit I was to engrossed in my own meal to sample others on the table. But I am reliably told that the steak, was cooked beautifully, the fish was delicate and flavoursome. And the chicken was clucking great! This is my favourite Italian restaurants, I have eaten here may times and I can’t recommend to highly enough. the service is great, the waiters are fantastic and the hospitality is second to none. You will have to book because this place gets rammed! Visit: www.llgustodellitalia.co.uk

Your Garden In November The garden begins to wind down in November as deciduous plants enter dormancy. leaves are falling rapidly and wind and rain are on the increase.

Tie in all the plants and secure structures an important winter job is to stake tall plants, climbers and young trees to protect against strong winds. check that existing ties are not cutting into stems of plants that have grown over the summer. Structures such as arches, pergolas and fences should also be checked and ideally treated with preservatives. If repaired now there is less potential damage in high winds.

Whilst most of nature is hibernating in the colder months, winter is the ideal time to get new trees into the ground. trees are best planted in the late autumn when the soil is still warm but not too dry, giving roots time to acclimatise before the harsher temperatures of winter arrives. whatever your plan to do outside in Nonmember, take time to enjoy the garden as it fades, leaving structural plants LOOKING GOOD THIS MONTH...TREES and evergreens to take centre stage. PROTECT TENDER PLANTS

Why should you plant them?

the weather is turning so its time to get those plants protected - frost can do serious damage to tender plants. frost tender plants in pots should be moved to the greenhouse, conservatory or porch. Exotic plants such as palms or tree ferns should be wrapped up for the winter with frost protection material.

Trees add structure to gardens and landscapes. As well as being used as a focal point for the garden they also make good hedges and screens. they come in a huge number of varieties, shades and position. Whilst most trees are grown for there foliage or flower, some are praised for their bark and branch shapes. Some trees look fantastic in spring while full of flower and other burst into vibrant colour in the autumn.

This protects them from strong winds and ensures the roots do not get damaged. Most varieties of trees will have specific planting instructions. There is a tree that will thrive in all soil types from wet soil to poor dry land and everything in between. 38
