Mikes letter
Welcome to this week’s edition. Wow October already. Where has the year gone, seems like the years go faster and faster the older you get doesn’t it? feels like only a few days ago we were talking about the kids going back to school and the problems it may bring... Now we are thinking what sort of mess has been created as we head to half term and the government suggestion of not going away for the autumn school holidays. I really do feel for the university students that have been sold the dream of partying all night and endless campus lectures they were so looking forward to as they head in to fresher week. I think they should all get a refund, or at least been told the whole story before the local universities took their cash and put them in some kind of lockdown. As for those that seemed to have had mass dorm parties shame on you we are all in this together for the long haul so suck it up, a time to party will happen-and what a party it will be when its all over!! On a happier note as of the 1st October its only 85 days to Christmas. I wonder how we will celebrate this year as most of the usual events that mark this occasion are closed and the pub will be closed at 10pm. Maybe we should have social distant street parities. Anyway till next week stay safe and well folks

Inspiring new mural at Bristol care home to lift residents' spirits
A Bristol care home has teamed up with a local street artist to create a new nature-inspired mural to lift the spirits of residents, where visits are still restricted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This year, residents at Tramways have also benefited from getting involved in growing their own courgettes, runner beans and cabbages as well as enjoying pies and crumbles made from their own home-grown fruit.
The location of the new mural is within the vegetable garden of Tramways, a residential care home which supports people with mental health needs and is run by social care charity Milestones Trust.
People supported by Tramways watched the mural being created and some got involved in spraying canvases to create artwork for their bedrooms and communal spaces.
Residents brainstormed ideas for the mural designed by street artist Gage. The final piece is inspired by their new-found interest in growing their own fruit and vegetables, as well as increasing visits from new wildlife spotted in the garden during lockdown. This included both foxes and squirrels, both of which feature in the artwork alongside fruit and vegetable motifs. Milestones Trust encourages those it supports to embrace their creativity through many different arts initiatives, as it helps to have a positive impact on their mental health and well-being.
6
Kirsty Armstrong, activities coordinator at Tramways, said: "We wanted to engage a talented local artist to reflect some of the peaceful daily activities we have all been enjoying at Tramways, particularly while outside visits have been limited. All the people we support enjoy the garden for different reasons. "Our resident cat, Jet, who is loved and looked after by all at Tramways was chosen to feature somewhere on the mural too. We have had lots of fun trying to get the right photograph to capture his personality! He brings so much joy to the home."
Beth Hendry, director for mental health services at Milestones trust added: "We love the mural that Gage has created for Tramways, and it has even more meaning because the residents can see the ideas they contributed. It's really transformed the space, and we hope will inspire everyone at Tramways to get some fresh air and exercise, while enjoying this wonderful artwork." Milestones Trust supports people with mental health needs, dementia and learning disabilities in the South West.
Gage, who has transformed many spaces in Bristol said "I was really excited when Tramways approached me and it was fun designing a piece full of their great ideas. We've all been affected by the restrictions from lockdown in different ways, but hopefully this new artwork goes some way to lifting people's spirits and provides a relaxing and inspiring place for them."

The 4000-mile country-wide cycling journey from Bristol Two of Bristol’s best known personal trainers, Paul Waters and Lou Alldis, are halfway through an epic 4000-mile cycle ride of the UK in aid of The Mental Health Foundation and the Woodlands Trust. This week they reached Cape Wrath, after pedaling 1500 miles from Bristol. Now they start the journey homeward. Lou explains her thoughts behind the journey “My Grandad’s favourite saying was ‘life is for living’. This isn’t something that most of us have been able to do recently during the pandemic, and it’s safe to say that it has been a stressful time for most people. At the start of lockdown, my Grandad passed away peacefully at the grand old age of 93. While it was his time to go, not being able to see him in those last few weeks was exceedingly hard and I miss him dearly. He did, however, leave me with something that I am so very proud of – a sense of adventure and an endless curiosity for life. He was a keen traveller; rambler; adventurer; writer of potty poems; giver of the best hugs and just the most incredible Grandad. Part of this fundraising is in his memory as he would have loved the adventure and was a keen supporter of the Woodland Trust and loved being outside exploring.” Paul shares Lou’s lust for adventure and is keen to raise money for two charities close to his heart. Recently, Paul’s dad Bill has struggled with anxiety and depression, something he’s gone through a number of times in his adult life. This time though, with all the things going on in the world, he attempted suicide.
8
Thankfully, he is OK, and Paul has been staying with his parents most of the time since. Bill has been getting great support and has made vast strides forward. “We are hugely proud of him for battling hard to overcome this and so pleased to see him getting back much closer to his usual self – full of spark and wit (even though his jokes are terrible). Aside from all this, we’ve experienced the stresses that so many people have faced recently – a difficult house sale and losing our work and income due to the virus. We decided a few weeks ago when we sold our house not to take on another place yet and use this opportunity to have a break, reset and do something truly memorable.” Paul Waters Paul and Lou are aiming to cycle around every single National Park (15) and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England, Wales and mainland Scotland. They are calling it ‘A Ride in the Park’ and we estimate it’ll be just over 4,000 miles and take 2-3 months. “We want to share with you our beautiful little island and show how jam-packed with amazing places it is. We want to show you just how important those places are for our wellbeing. We want to share with you how vital it is, we get out into those spaces and move, and we want everyone to recognise that we all face mental health challenges in our hectic world, but that there’s always something within our power to help fight these and keep ourselves balanced”

Phase two of Bristol's Wapping Wharf moves into final stages of construction with half of the homes now snapped up
• • •
Internal fit-out of apartments well under way with balconies going in Stamp duty holiday has sparked new interest ‘Must haves' that have risen up the agenda now include outside space, homeworking area and access to parking
Construction of the much-anticipated phase two of Wapping Wharf is reaching its final stages with over 55% of the new homes now sold (subject to contract). In total, over 90 of the 163 one, two and three-bedroom private sale apartments in this award-winning harbourside neighbourhood - known for its eclectic mix of independent restaurants, cafes and shops - have now been bought off-plan well ahead of completion. Over a fifth[1] of the sales so far have been through Help to Buy, the equity loan scheme, which allows people to buy a new home with just a 5% deposit, while the Government lends up to 20% of the value of the property. Phase two of Wapping Wharf Living, the name given to the private sale homes, is now coming into its final stages of construction. The internal fit-out of the apartments is now well under way and the focus now turning to external works including the paving, installation of the balconies and the reinstatement of the original gaol wall.
"With the Government recently announcing a stamp duty holiday for properties up to £500,000, we have certainly seen a spike in interest over the last couple of months from people keen to take advantage of this window." The stamp duty holiday is subject to Government restrictions and applies to purchases that complete prior to 31st March 2021. Vicky Dudbridge, sales director at Savills, which is marketing the apartments alongside Atwell Martin, said: "Research from Rightmove shows that people's home moving priorities have changed. ‘Must haves’ that have risen up the ‘tick list’ include a better homeworking space, green spaces nearby, internet connection and access to parking.
“Wapping Wharf Living is well placed to meet these needs as it’s offering apartments with multiple bedrooms, one of which could easily be used as a study, with many homes featuring balconies or terraces, not to mention the Pauline Sangster, senior residential sales and fact that the harbourside is right on their marketing manager at Wapping Wharf Living, doorstep. Some of the homes come with said: "We are seeing a whole range of buyers parking too - a rarity in Bristol!” interested in Wapping Wharf, from young professionals and downsizers to those looking to upsize from smaller homes. 10
Wapping Wharf was recently highlighted in the Sunday Times' Best Places to Live supplement, which named Bristol harbourside as one of the best places to live in the UK, with Wapping Wharf named ‘best address'. The Wapping Wharf Living show home, which is housed in shipping containers at Wapping Wharf's popular hub, CARGO, is open strictly by appointment only, with the opportunity for virtual appointments if preferred. Known for its eclectic array of independent shops, restaurants and cafes, CARGO has become an integral part of the city's food and drink scene over the last few years. Wapping Wharf is right in the heart of the city. Located next to Bristol's glistening harbour and M-Shed with the Arnolfini, Watershed and Bristol Old Vic all within walking distance, it is part of Bristol's cultural and leisure hub. Many apartments have balconies overlooking the new street scenes or internal garden courtyards, with many of the top-floor apartments featuring terraces.
The aim at Wapping Wharf is to create a mixed community of people from different walks and stages of life, so across the whole development, homes are being offered on a range of tenures, including open market sale and rent, shared ownership, as well as affordable and social rent. In the current phase of construction, there are 256 homes in total: 163 for open market sale, 49 shared ownership and 44 for private rent. Wapping Wharf Living is being developed by Umberslade and national urban regenerator, Muse Developments in a joint venture. Prices for a one-bedroom apartment start from £257,500; a two-bedroom apartment from £362,500; and a three-bedroom apartment from £550,000. Brislington War Memorial As people hurtle along the busy Bath Road in and out of town, they would be forgiven for failing to notice the Brislington War Memorial. Situated next to the Lodekka Public House and opposite the entrance to Kensington Park Road, it is a simple yet beautiful monument to our fallen heroes. Set in a semi-circle of iron railings, there is a stone cross bearing a sword of sacrifice above a wreath, both in relief. The inscription upon the cross reads: 1914-1918 IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE FROM THE PARISH OF BRISLINGTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR. 1939-1945
However, the monument has been somewhat neglected in recent years and is in desperate need of some care and attention. Jos said, ‘Lots of weeds are growing through cracks in the pavement, the metal railings surrounding the monument are badly corroded, a large amount of litter has become trapped in the undergrowth behind the railings and there are several overhanging branches rubbing against the top of the cross, which could potentially cause damage’. Andrew added, ‘Every year, Jamie Park, the landlord of the adjacent Lodekka pub, does an annual tidy-up prior to Remembrance Sunday. This year, we want to give him a helping hand to ensure our Brislington War Memorial is looking its very best’.
Therefore, this Saturday 3 October, starting at 10am, we have organised a working party to clean it up. We have contacted the Royal British Legion, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Bristol City Council to get the necessary permissions in place before we start work. We plan to scrub the cross with soap and water, pick up the litter, do some weeding, cut back the undergrowth and overhanging branches, and rub down the railings. The following Saturday, 10 October, we intend to start repainting the railings.
As we approach Remembrance Day on 11 November, we hope to decorate the railings with hundreds of knitted poppies. St Luke’s and St. Cuthbert’s Churches in Brislington have already donated several dozen poppies, but if you would like to knit one in remembrance of a loved one, please do and we will add it to the display. We have left a ‘poppy box’ at the entrance to the Lodekka, where your poppies can be deposited up to Friday 30 October. If you can help out with any of these activities, please get in touch.

My Slimming World Journey It was in 2018 that a friend pointed Vicky in the direction of a menopause site on the company intranet . Vicky says ‘ I had been putting more and more weight on even though I was active even taking part each week at my local parkrun , I was also aware that I had been feeling downbeat and things were getting on top of me especially in work. It got to the point that I swapped taking part in the park run to volunteering to marshal it .
It was such a relief to be welcomed at the door with a smile from a member , who immediately welcomed me in to the group and showed me to a new member area where I was shortly joined by Emma, my consultant.
Emma was really smart, really confident and I wanted to feel that confident again! She talked through food optimising - the extra easy plan I was going to follow to lose weight , and explained everything else I would need to know . She then invited me to join in image therapy and assured me she would weigh me herself at the end , the fact that that weight It was the Sunday of my 25th week volunteer- would be confidential was a massive relief as ing that my friend sent through the picture she at 14 stone 2 pounds I was the heaviest I had had taken of me in my purple bib , and I was ever been - including whilst pregnant . After I weighed I chose my target weight and haven’t horrified at what I saw. I had a big double looked back! chin, I looked awful and it was the most unflattering photo of me that I had seen. It was at that point I decided I had to do some- I lost 4lbs the first week and My journey had started . The support I had from Emma and the thing to take control of my weight as I rest of the group was invaluable , there was knew that was impacting had I get about myself . I had tried in the past to lose weight never any judgement just warm support and encouragement. by myself , and knew deep down that to be successful I was going to need support . I I loved how much free food I could eat , and looked on www.slimmingworld.co.uk and getting to grips with my slow cooker too we found my local Slimming World group at a time that suited me , I knew from friends that were enjoying really hearty meals as a family I needed to allow the time to stay to group to , and I was even happier knowing I could use my Syns for a sweet treat in the evenings or a get the real help . Gin & Tonic . I was so nervous the first week , wondering Spurred on by my weightloss I reembraced what the group and the consultant would be activity - going back to running the park run like . and earning my body magic awards along the way . As I lost weight and increase the activity up the hot flushes and mood swings got a lot better too ( well - maybe check that out with my husband !) I even stopped using the hrt patches . Just before lockdown I had reached my target of 10st 10lbs after losing 3 st 6lbs and have stayed within my target range though lockdown :) dropping from a size 16 to a 12 . It wasn’t always easy, but attending the zoom meetings and seeing all the friends I had made at group kept me going - and when the opportunity arose to become a comsultant with my new found confidence I just had to take it , I know I’ll be as nervous on my first night as a comsultant as I was when I joined - but I can’t wait to help others change their life’s in the same way I have . My first group is Tuesday 29th September. 17
Bristol hoteliers issue new call for Government support Hoteliers in Bristol say more Government support is urgently needed to protect the long-term future of their businesses in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. With the furlough scheme set to end next month, and new restrictions such as the ‘rule of six’ presenting additional challenges to the hospitality industry, hotel bosses say more support is needed quickly to help their businesses survive. Many members of the Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA) saw their premises operate at around two-thirds of their potential occupancy rates last month, with a few hotels not yet re-opened. While August was a good month overall for most hotels given all the circumstances, business was still some wat below what was achieved last year. And with no conferences, the end of the school holidays – therefore also ending the staycation boom – the BHA is forecasting overall business in 2020 is likely to be half of what was achieved last year, or even less. An important source of income for many hotels is weddings and conferences, which have been hugely affected by the limitations of being able to have no more than 30 people attending any such gathering. Raphael Herzog, chair of the BHA, said: “We need the Government to allow more people to attend weddings and conferences. This would provide a huge boost to our ability to continue to operate and would give event organisers more confidence to make bookings, whereas at the moment they are reluctant to commit because there are so many restrictions.
18
“We have made significant investments and implemented many procedures to make our hotels safe for guests. “We need to get larger events and increased numbers of people through our doors. “Pilot events are being tested in some hotels and events spaces across the country but we need the Government to speed up this process and increase the numbers we are allowed with some urgency. “It doesn’t help that people who attend a meeting during the day – even though they will be safely socially distanced – are now allowed to then have a dinner together. “A meeting for 30 people is OK under the current restrictions, but a dinner not (other than for a wedding). So, 30 people can come to our hotels for a meeting, but we can’t host a social dinner for a birthday or wedding anniversary in a private room; people will be restricted to tables of six in our restaurants. “With restrictions on the number of people who can attended events, it’s very difficult for us to resume business properly and the end of the furlough scheme will only make it harder for businesses to balance the books. “Unemployment has already increased massively this month and when furlough ends next month, this number is only likely to go up. “Germany has furlough until March 2022, and France has singled out tourism and other sectors to have an extended furlough scheme until the middle of 2021 in order to help keep people in their jobs and provide some longer-term support and stability for struggling businesses.
“Here, the hospitality sector will have benefited from it between April and October, which has been great in the short term, but we needed longer-term support and solutions.
The Christmas period – traditionally another good source of income for hotels – is also likely to be badly affected by the impact of the pandemic.
“The hotels are far from operating at the same level as last year and the scheme is ending. Other industries have benefitted from it fully during lockdown but are back on track and reaching almost same level as last year so why not offer more support to our industry until we recover?
Mr Herzog said: “We suspect the traditional corporate parties won’t happen, because not only might there still be social-distancing restrictions and no dancing, but also many companies simply won’t have the same budgets available that they’ve had in the past.
He added: “Many clients are working from home and getting used to using technology such as Zoom for meetings and conference calls, and it could be that the convenience of this, coupled with the savings they make compared to booking conference space at hotels, means that the sooner restrictions on the numbers of people who can attend are lifted, the better, otherwise people will get so used to the new way of doing things that they won’t want to return to face-to-face conferences.”
“Hotels are going to have to think outside the box when it comes to Christmas and see what we will be able to offer in a safe way. “The furlough scheme, the eat out to help out scheme, the business rates holidays and the reduction in VAT have all been beneficial to many businesses, and we’re grateful for them. “But ultimately, they are only temporary measures. We need the Government to commit to providing some longer-term support in order to enable us to keep our businesses running and to help the economy recover from this crisis.”

Charity launches free domestic abuse advice line for businesses A new advice line for businesses supporting employees experiencing or at risk of domestic abuse has been launched by crisis support charity Hestia. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lifetime with 10 per cent of victims reporting abuse at work (TUC, 2014). [i] The Everyone’s Business Advice Line will be a point of contact for businesses, supporting them on how to approach disclosures of domestic abuse by their employees, particularly in light of Covid-19. They will also receive advice so that they can signpost staff to specialist domestic abuse services. Hestia says lockdown has shown that home is not always safe for everyone, and with more people working remotely due to Covid-19, cases of domestic abuse are rising. The charity saw a 47 per cent increase in victims reaching out for information and support on its free domestic abuse app, Bright Sky. While over 2.4 million people are affected by domestic abuse every year,[ii] it can be difficult for employers to recognise the signs and support those experiencing domestic abuse in their organisation. Hestia launched the Everyone’s Business programme to increase awareness and support in the workplace and have worked with over 70 organisations from the Metropolitan Police to Balfour Beatty.
20
Businesses play a significant role in supporting those who experience domestic abuse. Yet whilst 86 per cent employers agree they have a duty of care to support employees experiencing domestic abuse (Westmarland, 2017)[iii], fewer than one in three victims disclose the abuse at work, citing ‘shame’ and ‘privacy’ (TUC, 2014). It’s also expensive, costing employers upwards of £14 billion every year, when measuring based on reduced employee productivity and lost output due to time off work (Oliver et al., 2019).[iv] Lyndsey Dearlove, Head of Everyone’s Business Advice Line at Hestia said: "Lockdown has meant victims have been away from their place of work, in isolation with their abusers, often with no way to seek support. Now, as more people return to their place of work, employers have a unique role to play in breaking the silence around domestic abuse. By providing a free advice line that offers guidance, employers will be able to help their employees and direct them to practical support. When employers take action and respond to domestic abuse, we know it saves lives. For too long domestic abuse has been nobody’s business and it is time it becomes everyone’s business." Elizabeth Filkin, Chair, Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse said:
“Members of the Employers’ Initiative on Domestic Abuse believe that domestic abuse is everyone’s business, and that businesses have a critical role to play in supporting those affected by domestic abuse. With Covid-19 and lockdown we know that domestic abuse, and at the same time employees may be finding it difficult to know how their staff are doing. We know that it’s not always easy to know what to do when domestic abuse, so having the Everyone’s Business Advice Line available for HR professionals or managers to support them and guide them is a very valuable resource.” Susan Bright, Global Managing Partner for Diversity & Inclusion and Responsible Business at Hogan Lovells, said: “Domestic abuse can have devastating consequences, and leave people faced with impossible life choices. Employers have an important role to play in supporting their employees, particularly this year and during the pandemic. We welcome the launch of the new advice line and hope that it will ease some of the pressure on those who are vulnerable.” A survivor of domestic abuse said:
“When my employer started working with Hestia, it was a turning point. This was my last resort to get help. I met with their Independent Domestic Violence Advocate and talked about my experience. It was the first time I felt believed. It was like a weight had been lifted. Without this service, I don’t know what would have happened. It is vital that businesses can provide this type of service. I want to tell anyone who is in the same situation I was in that talking to someone can make so much difference - speak to your employer.”

Tips And Tricks For Successful wall paper hanging There are some tasks that you may need to do before hanging your wallpaper. Check our list to ensure your walls are fully ready for wallpaper. With this guide you will get the best finish possible and avoid any nasty surprises further into the project. Have you removed any existing wallpaper? Doing this will give you a smooth finish and avoid air bubbles and creases appearing when you hang the new wallpaper
Have you bought enough wallpaper? It helps to estimate the amount of wallpaper you’ll need for your project. When you measure the height and length of the walls you want to wallpaper, also measure the windows and doors. Allow extra for wastage. We recommend 10% extra, and any unopened rolls can be returned to the store you bought them from. Also, allow for extra when using paper with a large repeat pattern – the pattern repeat is usually stated on the roll label or product information. Are all the rolls of wallpaper the same batch number? Make sure all the rolls have the same batch number printed on the label, as the colours and in some instances, the finish, can vary between batches.
Have you planned how you’re going to hang the wallpaper? We recommend hanging wallpaper vertically Are your walls freshly plastered? unless the pattern requires it to be hung If so, have you sealed them with wall sealer? horizontally. If hanging over lining paper, Applying wall sealer, also known as wall size, hanging it in the opposite direction to the lining seals the porous surface of the wall and impaper means that the seams won’t fall in the proves the adhesion of the wallpaper paste. same place and create ridges. Your Garden In October
Autumn is officially here! October, in all its glory, gives us a wonderful display of colours. The trees are beginning to lose their leaves in abundance as they become dormant for winter, telling us that the change of season is in full swing.
The days are much shorter and cooler and we can feel autumn chill in the air. Although trees are the stars of the month, October is time to think about how the garden will look when it wakes from hibernation. There are plants to be cut back and left tidy for the winter, shrubs to be planted or moved, summer plants to be removed and replaced with winter hardy bedding, bulbs to be strategically placed in borders and the lawn to be fed and given its final mow October may bring with it the beginning of quiet times for the garden – but not for the gardener. TIDY PERENNIALS Perennials are not difficult plants to care for, but trimming them after flowering finishes in autumn helps to improve their appearance and give a boost to next year’s flowering. Using a knife, shears or secateurs, cut stems close to the ‘crown’ or dormant base of the plant. Any crowded clumps of perennials can also be lifted, divided and replanted. Take the opportunity to remove weeds as you prune before applying a light mulch to protect from any hard frost.
PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS October is the ideal month to plant trees and shrubs. Although the container grown plants can be planted at any time of the year they are easier to care for if planted in the autumn or winter. The ground is damp and still warm which gives the perfect conditions to allow roots to become established before winter sets in.
PLANT AUTUMN BEDDING Any remaining summer bedding will be looking very tired by now and is best cleared and replaced for a fresher display. Autumn bedding such as pansy and primrose will give an instant lift to the garden and they look great planted between the shrubs in the border. Myositis, which produces masses of small flowers with the little white eyes and Sweet William, which provides a colourful carpet of flowers from spring through summer are both ideal for over wintering if planted now.
LOOKING GOOD THIS MONTH... Conifers
WHY SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM? Conifers are hardy evergreen trees and shrubs that suit any garden. They come in a huge range of shape and sizes and textures and the colour can be anything from yellow or light green through to dark green and blue. Easy to care for and long lasting, conifers are the ideal choice for any gardener looking for a low maintenance but high impact plant. HOW SHOULD YOU PLANT THEM? Dwarf conifers are good for containers and larger shrubs and trees make good hedging or garden features. They are happy in any soil in the sun or shade. Newly planted conifers will need watering until established.. After flowering, sheer back dead flower stems to keep the plant looking full.

Some of the most painful health conditions most common signs of a heart attack people can suffer with The are : The NHS has revealed some of the most painful health conditions people can suffer from. The list has a number of illnesses which can be so insufferable they can prevent people from doing simple, everyday tasks. Not all of the conditions on the list are curable, but they are manageable - with the help of medicine and a little support from loved ones. Some of the list comes as no surprise, while others certainly might do. Shingles Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it which usually affects a particular area on one side of the body. The main symptom is a painful rash that develops into itchy blisters which contain particles of the virus. An attack usually lasts between two and four weeks, but 20 per cent of sufferers go on to develop nerve pain in the affected area of skin. This pain can be severe and last for several months or even longer. Shingles can occur at any age, but is most common in people over the age of 70. It is much less common in children. Frozen shoulder Frozen shoulder means your shoulder is painful and stiff for months, sometimes years. The NHS says it means the joint can become so tight and stiff that it is virtually impossible to carry out simple movements, such as raising your arm. Daily activities can become an ordeal. It is not clear what causes frozen shoulder but it can happen after a shoulder or arm injury, and is more common in people with diabetes. Heart attack A heart attack is life-threatening and sees the heart muscle starved of oxygen-rich blood. Most are caused when the arteries narrow and fill up with fatty materials which prevents blood from flowing properly. Smoking and living an unhealthy lifestyle are major contributory factors in heart attacks, so regular exercise and maintaining a good diet are vital. But through no fault of their own some people are more prone to having them as heart disease can be hereditary.
•
Chest pain - tightness, heaviness, pain or a burning feeling in your chest. • Pain in arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach - for some people, the pain or tightness is severe, while other people just feel uncomfortable. • Sweating • Feeling light-headed • Becoming short of breath • Feeling nauseous or vomiting Migraine More than “just a headache” - migraine is a complex disabling neurological disorder, the Migraine Trust says. It explains: “For many people the main feature is a painful headache. Other symptoms include disturbed vision, sensitivity to light, sound and smells, feeling sick and vomiting. Migraine attacks can be very frightening and may result in you having to lie still for several hours. “The symptoms will vary from person to person and individuals may have different symptoms during different attacks. Your attacks may differ in length and frequency. “Migraine attacks usually last from 4 to 72 hours and most people are free from symptoms between attacks.“Migraine can have an enormous impact on your work, family and social lives.” Sciatica Sciatica is a back problem that affects the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and runs from behind the pelvis down to your feet. Sciatica occurs if it becomes irritated or compressed in any way – this most commonly involves pressure being placed on the nerve by a slipped disc for example – and the pain will basically follow the path of the nerve, so what you’re describing in terms of it starting in the lower back and progressing through to your leg seems to fit with this. Other symptoms can include tingling sensations, a bit like pins and needles in the leg, cramp, and shooting pain that starts in the buttock region and travels swiftly down towards the foot. The pain of sciatica can vary from mild to extremely painful – to the point where in severe cases it is impossible to put any weight on the affected leg. Sciatica can affect just about anyone, but the younger you are, the less likely it is. 29

Tortilla Mall Cribbs Causeway,
If you ever find yourself wondering around the Mall Cribbs Causeway, shopping for lights as I did one Friday evening. Then you’ll want to eat something to keep up your energy levels and stop you potentially going insane with boredom or murdering your other half for making you do it in the first place. Well fear not because in the Mall there is an abundance of food venues to choose from. My favourite however is ‘Tortilla’. A Californian take on a Mexican classic, the Taco. Serving up delicious morsels of fresh and tasty bites of Californian sunshine. Their menu is quite extensive, offering dishes such as nachos, burritos, tacos and salads. It’s been there a little while so things must be going well? Despite the Covid situation it has held on to the tassels of its sombrero like a Mexican bandit holding on to a money train! Walking in, the instant impression you get is that this place is the Subway Sandwiches of the Taco world. It’s long deli style counter bulging with different taco and burrito fillings. We where greeted with a warm and friendly smile from the guy behind the counter who took our order.
Reviewed by food critic Peter Abraham 40
I had the trio of tacos with pulled pork, cheese, salsa, guacamole and sour cream. The ball and chain had the Burrito with rice, beans, cheese and salsa. The place was virtually empty with no atmosphere. A real shame as it has great potential to be a really fun place to go with friends.
Tacos are messy things to eat. You just have to grab them and get on with it. That’s what I did. Like an excited toddler in a high chair I tucked in and enjoyed every bite they were delicious. The flavours worked, they where fresh and vibrant and very moorish. All three demolished in quick succession. According to my shadow the burrito was good too. All in all this is a great little place. Good food, friendly service and quick on delivery. The only thing that lets it down is the atmosphere. Get that sorted and they’ve cracked it.

Bristol Pride is a registered charity organised by volunteers from the community who work all year round to challenge homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and promote equality and diversity, for all, through various events, school visits and consultation services. The Bristol Pride Festival also attracts close to 40,000 people every year. The ‘Gas Girls’ recently received ‘The Best Football Community Development Initiative’ award at this year’s FA Women’s Football Awards and the club is continuing to establish key partnerships within the City in an attempt to promote community cohesion and inclusion. Bristol Rovers Women’s and Bristol Rovers Community Trust are also excited to be working alongside Bristol Pride to organise future events and help bring the community together to celebrate, create understanding, opportunities for engagement and to tackle discrimination. 42
Club Secretary and Marketing Manager, Matthew Davies, said: "I am absolutely delighted to establish this partnership with such an inspiring organisation and charity like Bristol Pride. We've been in discussion with the team at Bristol Pride for a number of months and it was very clear that we all share the same community values and strive to challenge homophobia of any kind in society. To donate the front of this shirt to Bristol Pride and to be able to wear their brand is a huge honour and we're really excited by what we're able to achieve by working together in the future. I'd also like to thank Bob Seymour from Ahimsa Yoga Bristol who helped us the launch of the kit and shares our values as a club." Festival Director at Bristol Pride, added: "We were so excited when Matt got in touch. Sport reaches and connects with so many people of all ages, races, sexes genders and everything in-between. Homophobia is a big problem in sport and this is a very clear message. We wish them all the best with the season ahead and can’t wait to wear the shirts with pride."
