Mikes letter So this week I had a great start to the week as shops began to reopen and business started to have some sort of normality to it. Then Tuesday happened and the wallet took a bashing as the wife wanted shoes. So you might be thinking whats this rant all about? Well as we have been in lockdown for over 80 days I have not needed to spend any money on going out shopping for clothes etc. Now the shops are open all I see is massive lines of people queuing outside stores like Sports Direct with reported 2 to 3 hour waiting times, as shops figure-out how to cope with high demand from consumers gagging to get to the shops for those important pillows.. Listen people. Government guidelines still state only go out if needed. I think we are heading for another spike If I am honest. How weird is this weather we are having? Yesterday I took Buster AKA “The office dog” out for his afternoon walk, it was dry so wore just a jacket and shorts out then in a matter of minutes it felt like i needed arm bands as the heavens opened and me and Buster got absolutely soaked. I do feel for the shops that reopened all spic and span ready to trade, then had to deal with flash floods and start to sanitize everything again. Lets hope the weather gets better and shops figure out how to manage the influx of shoppers. Finally Happy Father’s Day this Sunday.

This week..

Lockdown Litter! For a great many people the Lockdown has been a stressful and trying experience, so a lot of us are understandably relieved the situation appears to be slowly improving. Last weekend we were allowed to visit some of our family and friends for the first time, and on Monday many shops reopened for business. At long last there seems to be a return to some semblance of normality. Something that has helped to make the Lockdown slightly more bearable has been week after week of amazing, sunny weather. For those lucky enough to have a garden, or access to a nearby park, it has been a wonderful opportunity to exercise in the sun or simply to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. Bristol reputedly has 365 parks, so you could visit a different one every day for a whole year, and here in Brislington we are certainly blessed with more than our fair share of beautiful, green spaces. Unfortunately, for anyone who has visited our parks and open spaces recently, you will not have failed to notice the huge amount of litter strewn all over the place. Of course a certain amount of the litter has been blown in by the wind but a significant number of people seem to think it is acceptable to leave litter behind rather than take it home.

Our polite entreaties to avoid littering are clearly not working and some exasperated local authorities are getting more forthright with their messaging. New signs appearing on Weston seafront are now telling people, ‘Don’t be a tosser’! Before Lockdown, Jos and Andrew organised regular litter picks, and now Lockdown is easing we are hoping to restart them. Last Saturday, together with some colleagues, we spent a couple of hours cleaning up around the city centre and this Saturday we are staying closer to home and tidying up around the Whitby Road area. We also plan to hold another litter pick in Brislington Village soon. Do get in touch if you’d like to come along. Alternatively, why not join one of our fantastic local community groups, many of which are starting to get active once again? For example, the Tuesday Toilers meet up at 9am every week to tidy up the beautiful churchyard of St. Luke’s. All you need is a pair of gloves, they can provide all the tools. Let’s all work together to keep Brislington beautiful. Passport rules: Could mean you may not be able to travel when the restrictions end..

Holidays abroad could be allowed for people across the UK later this summer as the rules are being to change in Britain and abroad. The Lockdown measures are being lifted around foreign holiday resorts with hotels, beaches bars being allowed to reopen, and tourists being welcomed back. And our Government is reported to be working on rules that could see Brits travel after June 29. But experts are warning that changes to the passport system means you may not be able to travel even when the Government updates its advice. A travel expert has warned that millions of people might find that their passport are invalid after the government warned Uk residents to not renew theirs unless it’s essential. Normal passport operations stopped in March as lockdown measures were imposed in a bid to halt the coronavirus. The current government advice states: "It is taking longer than the usual 3 weeks to process applications because of coronavirus. "So do not apply unless you need a passport urgent reasons, for example if a family member has passed away, or for government business."

Countries like China, Thailand, Turkey and Egypt now require at least six months on a passport, meaning in some cases it needs to be valid until next year to allow for travel. At the moment premium and fast-track services are unavailable due to the lockdown. However people applying for the first time or families that have newborn babies, are especially hard hit as obtaining new passports can take much longer than the standard two to three weeks. Over-16s applying for their first passport are required to attend an interview. On the government website, it states: "Do not book travel until you have a valid passport - doing so is at your own risk. "As Your new passport will not have the same number as your old one." A Home Office spokeswoman said: “Her Majesty’s Passport Office continues to process standard passport applications, but they are taking longer than usual as a result of changed working practices designed to keep both staff and customers safe. The Home Office states: “We strongly advise not to book travel without a valid passport.”

Bristol City Centre BID backed campaign warns of business collapse and mass redundancies #RaiseTheBar campaign calls for threshold for vital grant to be raised to protect jobs when furlough scheme ends The government's furlough scheme is concealing the true picture of unemployment in Bristol, according to the Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District (BID) and greater support must be given to at risk retail, hospitality and leisure businesses. The Bristol City Centre BID, along with BARBIE, the Bristol Association of Restaurants, Bars and Independent Establishments, are backing a nationwide campaign calling on government to raise the threshold for its Retail, Hospitality & Leisure Grant (RHLG). Without this, they warn, hundreds of Bristol employees who have been protected by the Coronavirus Job Retention (furlough) Scheme could find no business and therefore no job to return to when the scheme ends.

These include popular, successful venues in the city centre such as the Milk Thistle on Colston Avenue and No 1 Harbourside, which have also backed the campaign along with dozens of others. Bristol City Centre BID and the #RaiseTheBar campaign, set up by Croydon BID (Business Improvement District) are calling on central government to expand the rateable value threshold for eligible businesses to access the £25,000 grant from £51,000 to £150,000. Access to this support, they argue, will be the difference between survival and bankruptcy for thousands of High Street businesses in Bristol and across the UK.

Together the BIDs and #RaiseTheBar partners maintain the furlough scheme is hiding the true picture of unemployment in Bristol and the UK, by providing support to employees whilst their BARBIE is currently working with 60 at risk Bristol employers are facing closure. Adjustments to the businesses which have not been eligible for furloughing scheme have also created an unlevel government grants, 14 of which are at high risk and playing field of support meaning businesses are together employ 200 people. missing out on vital funds to stay afloat whilst their employees are able to remain financially supported Currently businesses such as pubs, bars, on furlough. restaurants and cafés are only eligible for the £25,000 grant if the premises they operate from The situation is likely to reach tipping point this has a rateable value of less than £51,000. This month, with the next quarterly rent due on means large numbers of leisure and hospitality Wednesday 24 June putting businesses at risk of businesses based in larger buildings in Bristol are closure, with overheads and the cost of re-opening cut off from the financial support offered to smaller depleting cash reserves. outlets.

10

Keith Rundle, operations director at Bristol City Centre BID says: "The furlough scheme has been a life-line for thousands of Bristol employees as we continue to battle all that the covid pandemic throws at us. But it will all be wasted if as the scheme is wound up, staff find themselves with no employer or business to return to. With rents due and costs of putting in protection measures prior to safely re-opening, businesses need access to financial support now more than ever - to ensure they can get back up and running, keep people in jobs and help get the economy moving again." Brendan Murphy, Co-Founder of BARBIE, the Bristol Association of Restaurants, Bars and Independent Establishments, added: "There are so many businesses that have been left out of government grants, some because they are over the £51k rateable value cap and others that don't fit the eligibility criteria which seems to be different depending on which council you are with. We are currently dealing with 14 of such cases that between them employ over 200 staff. Urgent intervention and support is required to stop the industry collapsing and that support is required now, not in 3 months time." Amy Devenish, Owner of The Gloucester Old Spot, Bristol commented: "Simply because a business has a rateable value set at a certain level by the council, It should not immediately assume that the business is any better able to survive a crisis like this. A sliding scale of grants would have been a much fairer solution."

Kwan Voong, Owner, Toro Noodle Bar added: "There are a huge number of Bristol businesses over the £51k RV cap in Bristol and we need urgent support as has been provided by councils such as Camden, Hackney and Lambeth who are using their additional discretionary grants to support the hospitality sector." Matthew Sims, CEO, Croydon BID and co-founder of #RaiseTheBar campaign commented: "The Government is in danger of pushing businesses to the brink of the abyss and in turn leaving businesses with no choice but to make serious decisions regarding their future operation, leading to redundancies and even closure. If this happens, the positive work of the Job Retention Scheme would have been short-lived, leaving the country, long term in a far worse position and having spent millions on financial aid supporting the employee, but ignoring the employer." Set up by Croydon BID (Business Improvement District), leaders of the #RaiseTheBar campaign believe access to the £25,000 is the difference between survival and bankruptcy for businesses on High Streets across England and Wales, which have welcomed an outpouring of support from the public during lockdown choosing to support their local communities. Covid-19 Pandemic – From Physical Health To Mental Health Crisis: The 2nd Wave That Will Affect Us All As things start to settle down, with the peak of Covid-19 hopefully now behind us, people are starting to return to some sense of “normality” in their day to day lives. I think we all recognise that things will never be the same again after this pandemic, which has effected everyone, through loss of loved ones or battling through the immediate threat to our physical health, employment and financial worries and stress, triggered by a situation which truly brought the world to a standstill. In the wake of this unprecedented global event, as we begin to feel more relaxed about the threat to our physical health, it is our mental health which will now be a concern for many of us. The impact of Covid-19 on our mental health will likely have been building throughout lockdown.

As we return to social interactions and the general business of everyday life, many people will start to recognise signs that they are struggling mentally with the readjustment. Meeting up with family and friends and participating in social activities again may be challenging for some people. Coping again with the pressures of commuting, time management, targets and office politics, while balancing work/home life, finding time to relax and the difficulties managing these stressors, will also return. Sadly, many people have lost loved ones and will also be experiencing the grieving process for those no longer with us due to Covid-19. How these events will impact on our mental health will, of course, differ for each of us. Regardless of what stresses we face; it is our ability to cope with them, combined with what support we have around us, that helps us to manage when things get particularly difficult for us. It is likely that many will experience anxiety around returning to work or social activities and so important that we all recognise this as we go back into the workplace, ensuring that we are supportive and kind to all of our colleagues, as we may not know what they have had to overcome in order to be there.

Many more of us will be struggling with our mood. Isolation, loneliness and stress are the main causes of depression and it is likely that this situation will have had a profound impact on people who were already experiencing problems with depression and anxiety. Supporting everyone in the workplace with a positive and open culture around mental health is more important now than ever. Employers can do so much to help their employees to maintain good mental health and it is in the interests of everyone for them to do so. The financial cost of mental health to employers has increased to more than £45 billion a year in the UK but the true cost is in the impact that poor mental health has on individual lives. Wise employers are no longer saying “leave it at the door” when it comes to mental health in the workplace. They recognise that, to get the best out of their employees, they need to invite them to bring their whole self to work. A culture around acceptance that provides non-judgemental and supportive responses to mental health in the workplace improves outcomes for all. Earlier intervention when mental health problems do develop, increase recovery rates, and protect over-stretched NHS services. Where employers provide proactive support around staff mental health, they also see a return on investment of £6 for every £1 spent, through reduced absences and improved productivity, satisfaction and retention. As we return to work and our stressful, busy lives, making mental health support the top priority for workplaces is no longer a choice for employers, it is a must.

Please visit our website at www.mindmapswellbeing.org.uk to learn more about ways we are helping employers to support their staff with mental wellbeing and please get in touch to see how we can help in your workplace.

Private company could start fining people for littering in North Somerset.

A private company could be drafted in to fine people for littering, fly tipping and dog fouling in the North Somerset area. Posters have been put up and bigger bins installed but Councillor Bridget Petty said residents had been calling out for tougher action to be taken. She added North Somerset Council would learn from the mistakes of other authorities amid previous concerns companies were “private litter armies” picking on easy targets. Speaking during a Facebook Live video last week, the executive member for the climate emergency and the environment said: “If people choose to break the law they probably should be fined. We need to look seriously at how we make that happen. “Some people might not like it but right now everyone is suffering from the litter being left. We’re putting up some additional signage, quite an amusing sign. Hopefully it feels like a bolder statement. “We really want to see a positive change and might have to take some more significant action.” Councillor Petty added the littering problem has got worse since the lockdown but the issue is not a new one - A consultation launched prior to the coronavirus crisis showed that 90% of residents wanted the council to issue more fines for dog fouling and fly tipping, in the area and 77% wanted tougher action to be taken on littering. She also added: “The community is unhappy with people disregarding the rules. “The litter in our seas, watercourses and rural environment is also awful for the wildlife and the planet."

14

Facing similar problems in Bath and North East Somerset their Council brought in a enforcement company 3GS to clean up its streets last year but ended the contract 12 months later. The firm did not hand out more than 1,800 fines in the first 10 months and was reportedly worth more than £200,000. More than 96% of them were for dropping cigarette butts and only two fines were issued for fly tipping. The council also faced a backlash when 3GS fined an OAP for feeding the pigeons crumbs from her sausage roll. This attracted unwanted national headlines for the area. Bristol City Council hired another firm, Kingdom, to issue fines for littering in the city centre. The scheme was then dropped after the 18-month pilot scheme, when 90% of the 13,000 fixed penalty notices issued were related to smoking. 3GS was brought in to cover a wider area of the city and tackle fly-tipping and dog mess as well as litter. Councillor Petty said: “if North Somerset Council followed their lead and brought in a company it would sign a contract with strict terms on what it would allow”. She also added: “Most councils have the best of intentions regarding this subject. I can reach out and ask their experience, what not to do. I’m open to learning lessons from neighbouring authorities. “We wouldn’t launch anything unless we were happy with it and may consider it as a trial run. She also added: “We don’t want this to be something we have to have forever though. We want to solve this, so we don’t have a problem in the future.” You may however no know that people can already be issued with a £75 fine for dog fouling, littering and antisocial behaviour and other breaches of a public space protection order that covers the whole of North Somerset.

New virtual groups in place As a team of local Slimming World Consultants, in South Bristol, we ran our last physical groups back on March 15th. Since then we’ve worked together to rebuild the slimming community on a virtual platform. We know our groups bring people together in the heart of their communities; to support and inspire one another every week. In these anxious times, the community spirit and genuine care we offer has never been more important. We’ve had countless messages from members genuinely distressed at losing their group and their weight loss lifeline, missing the camaraderie each week, and desperately wanting to hang on to the changes they had already made towards a healthier, fitter lifestyle. Our current package includes access to a weekly virtual group using the video conferencing service Zoom. Each Slimming World Consultant hosts their group, members join from home so they continue to get support in making healthier food choices and finding new ways to stay active. The emphasis is very much on encouraging, building and staying in control of new healthy lifestyle habits when it might not be as easy as under normal circumstances – helping members find ways to make groceries go a bit further, easy ways to shop, cook and eat healthily at a time when access to food is changing.

Slimming World’s unique formula built on compassion, care and understanding brings a welcome bit of light in hard times, and is possibly more important now than ever before. All of this will be combined with ongoing use of social media, access to Slimming World’s app and member-only website Lifeline Online, which provides members with all the practical help they need, as well as advice about how to stay physically active and psychologically strong. We've done our very best to put new virtual groups in place - which gives our members the same practical help, caring support and friendship they’ve come to rely on, and give us as Consultants the means to sustain our livelihoods in these challenging times ahead. We're delighted that now in our second month of running our groups virtually we're able to offer new members the opportunity to join us as well. So whether you've been a member in the past or are entirely new to Slimming World, there’s never been a better time to join - Could this be an opportunity to use your time in lockdown to carve new healthy habits for you and your family. L A Cinema The L A Cinema Film Quiz is now in its 13th week and this Friday's quiz has a 90s cinema theme. Volunteers of Long Ashton's community cinema decided to run a weekly quiz during the government lockdown on a dedicated YouTube channel. The quiz is FREE to take part and has been set-up for fun to test your knowledge of cinema. The quiz streams live from the L A Cinema YouTube channel and consists of five rounds and a total of fifty questions. This weeks theme is 90s cinema with topics including name that film from the 90s decade, a music round, television nostalgia, name the director and film stars of the decade. During the quiz, I will be giving film recommendations watched during the week and will ask participants to take part in a chat on their favourite films, moments and film stars from the 90s decade. This weeks quiz (June 19th), starts at 20:30pm and broadcasts live from the L A Cinema channel at www.youtube.com/channel/UCRWvSeAgX7o1B9-QQao9tsA You can also follow L A Cinema on our social media channels for updates on our quiz, film recommendations and movie news. Welcome to this weeks council’s coronavirus information and advice newsletter This week, Central Government announced a change in the lockdown regulations for England. From Saturday at 10am, single adult households (adults living on their own or single parents with children under 18) will be allowed to form a “support bubble” with another household, and be able to interact with each other without social distancing. For some of us, this will mean finally being reunited with loved ones. These changes have been put in place to support the loneliest and most vulnerable, while we continue to work to keep the ‘R’ rate down.

Under government guidance, play areas and equipment remain closed.

This Monday 15 June will see the reopening of “non-essential” retail such as clothing shops and department stores, including our major shopping areas, Cabot Circus and the Galleries. This is thanks to careful planning and the appropriate measures such as signage and queue management to ensure that shoppers can return safely and adhere to social distancing. Shopping areas are likely to be busier than we have seen over the past few weeks, so we ask that you try to limit visits where possible to avoid risk of infection. Please continue to walk, cycle or drive if you can; only using public transport if you have no other means of getting to your destination.

We urge residents to take care when using outdoor facilities and ask you to please continue to follow social distancing guidelines. You can find more information on the council’s website.

While certain elements of the lockdown are easing, our message remains clear. Stay home as much as possible, maintain handwashing and if you are in a public place, avoid the risk of infection by leaving the area if it is busy. We must also continue to prioritise public transport for key workers, by staggering the times we are traveling and going out. Please continue to stay safe and follow the guidance. Have a good weekend. Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol Changes in parks There are a number of changes being made in our parks to respond to the relaxation on restrictions from government. These are: Tennis courts at Redcatch Park and multi-use games areas (e.g. hard court, enclosed spaces like basketball courts) across the city opened on Wednesday 10 June.

24

We are currently assessing the risk for the reopening of facilities at Ashton Court and Blaise Estate. We continue to look at how we can safely reopen public toilets and working with the Police to reiterate message of not going to the toilet in public spaces. Food/refreshment outlets in our parks have now reopened.

Are you caring, reliable, motivated and enthusiastic? We’re looking for people to support elderly and vulnerable people, who have had Covid-19, as they come out of hospital. These people either live alone or don’t have people at home who can help. Your valuable support will help them to increase their confidence and become more independent again as they settle back into life at home or other community settings. Join our ‘Reablement’ team and make a huge difference to people in Bristol. Be wary of cold-calling scams The council’s Trading Standards team has recently received an increase in reports of rogue traders operating cold-calling scams across the city. The most recent cases have involved individuals posing as council officers, offering energy efficiency home improvements such as loft insolation. Please be wary of rogue traders operating in your area. Our advice to citizens is: If you are not sure who is at your door, do not open it or let them in Check the identity of the caller by asking to see some identification If you need work or repairs done, seek quotes from a reliable tradesperson, and take your time to choose. A reputable trader will have no issue with you doing this Read more here.

Places of worship reopening From Monday 15 June, places of worship will be permitted to open for individual prayer in line with social distancing guidelines. We recognise this will be long-awaited good news for people of all faiths, who have shown enormous patience and have been unable to gather to mark significant moments such as Easter, Ramadan, Eid, Passover and Vaisakhi together. Communally led prayer will not be possible at this stage, and individual places of worship are able to open at their own discretion, when they consider it safe to do so. Innovation in response to coronavirus We’ve all made changes since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis – watch Karshare’s video to hear from founder and CEO, Andy Hibbert, to find out how community donated cars are helping frontline workers in Bristol. If you have a car or van that’s currently not being used, and you’d be prepared to put it to good use in the Bristol community, email: help@karshare.com.

If you’re an NHS, hospice, care home, community meals service, food bank worker or volunteer, and you are struggling with transportation, please visit the Karshare website and enter your details. The Karshare team will do their best to match you with an appropriate vehicle (free of charge) as soon as possible.

The biggest breakthrough yet' is unveiled It is the first time in about two weeks North Bristol NHS Trust - which covers Southmead Hospital - has reported a patient dying after contracting Covid-19, bringing the total to 118. While the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Trust, which runs the BRI and Weston General Hospital, reported no new deaths from Monday 15th . The total stands at 142. Public Health England's figures published at 4.01pm yesterday June 16th show Bristol has one further confirmed case of the deadly virus, bringing the city's total to 720. Meanwhile, North Somerset's cases has remained at 482 since last Friday. And both Bath and North Somerset and South Gloucestershire have not seen an increase for a week (June 9), with the number of cases in these areas standing at 237 and 406 respectively.

The Office for National Statistics released figures this week showing the UK's death toll now stands at 53,000. This number is higher than the government's as the authority include all deaths where Covid-19 is mentioned on the death certificate. While PHE's figures show there has been 41,969 coronavirus-related deaths across the UK after 233 more were recorded this week. This is one of the largest daily increases reported in more than a 7 days. The figures came on the same day Boris Johnson hailed a new drug as the “biggest breakthrough yet in the fight against the virus. And the PM vowed the drug will be available on the NHS and the government has "taken steps" to ensure the country has enough supplies for a second peak. Results of UK trials showed dexamethasone, which is used to reduce inflammation in other diseases such as arthritis, reduced death rates by around a third among the most severely ill of COVID-19 patients admitted to hospital.

Communities urged to #KeepCooperating after lockdown ends More than 3,500 people who have been affected by the pandemic have been supported so far thanks to a local donation from an independent co-operative. Southern Co-op's donation of ÂŁ40,000 to the Neighbourly Community Fund is providing micro-grants to good causes that are helping communities affected by the coronavirus outbreak. The co-operative, which has retail and funeralcare branches across the south of England, is sharing the good news ahead of Co-op Fortnight (22 June to 5 July) which will celebrate some of the ways co-operatives have supported their communities during the pandemic. During the fortnight, member-owned organisations across the UK will also be urging people to keep up this new found wave of co-operation.

Boogie Mites, which supports around 300 people per week through educational, community and intergenerational music across the city of Portsmouth, said: "Thank you to Southern Co-op. Your generous donation has enabled us to continue to provide free virtual online music groups and educational support for families and carers who enjoy Boogie Mites music. The money enabled us to pay our teacher, cover running costs and pay for additional equipment." The theme for this year's Co-op Fortnight is #KeepCooperating and it is highlighting how co-operatives across the UK are supporting their communities. In a YouGov poll conducted by trade body Co-operatives UK, 31 per cent of people surveyed from the south of England have shopped more at independent/locally run stores during lockdown and 27% will continue to do so after lockdown has ended. The poll also showed that 24% of people in the south of England said they have checked the wellbeing of vulnerable people in their community.

Stripey Stork, a Surrey-based charity which received a grant through the Neighbourly fund, said: "The funding has enabled Stripey Stork to support families in need during this difficult time, through providing essential items needed to keep children clothed, clean and safe." So far, the Neighbourly Community Fund has paid 14 micro-grants from Southern Co-op's donation. Other organisations to benefit directly from Southern Co-op's donation include Portsmouth-based Boogie Mites which has used the donation to continue its support to families and carers online; Dementia UK providing specialist dementia support for families through their admiral nurse service; the Royal Voluntary Service helping people at home and to support the NHS through volunteering; and Portsmouth's Express FM community radio which has been regularly updating listeners with essential information. Organisations based near Southern Co-op's stores or funeral homes can apply for the grants through their new or existing Neighbourly profiles via www.neighbourly.com/goodcause/ and using the referral code SouthernCoopPartner.

34

Co-operatives UK Chair Nick Matthews said: "It's heartening to see that the public has seen the benefit of shopping locally, reducing food waste, increased recycling and exploring their local area. The fact many people are planning to continue their new behaviour shows they can see the positive impact. Our Co-op Fortnight campaign is all about encouraging and supporting people to keep co-operating. "Buying from independent businesses such as co-ops means creating local jobs and supporting organisations who put strong values at the heart of all that they do." Co-operatives are businesses that are owned and controlled by their members, together contributing ÂŁ38bn to the UK economy and spanning all sectors from high street retailers to community owned pubs, fan owned football clubs to farmer controlled businesses. International Day of Co-operatives takes place during the fortnight on Saturday 4 July. To find out more about Co-op Fortnight, visit www. uk.coop/fortnight or watch the Co-op Fortnight video.

Feel Like The King Of The Castle With A Membership At The Manor House

Aspiring golfers in the Cotswolds area are set to become the envy of their peers for being in the fortunate position to be able to join one of England’s most spectacular courses, The Manor House, as golf becomes a phenomenon across the country. UK golf clubs, including The Manor House, are experiencing their busiest time after the government eased lockdown restrictions so that people can play sports that are easy to physically distance outdoors, which only really include golf and tennis. And there has never been a better time to join the esteemed club as a member, where you will be able to enjoy priority tee time bookings and an advanced booking window. Located in the pretty village of Castle Combe, Wiltshire, just 10 minutes from Junction 17 of the M4, The Manor House Golf Club is a desirable place to play, let alone be a member of, with some of the most idyllic scenery you will see on an English golf course.

36

The delightful championship-standard 18-hole course is immersed in the enchanting surroundings of the Cotswolds, with 365 acres of breathtaking rolling countryside as a backdrop. Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, the mature oak and beech trees that line the beautifully manicured fairways, together with the immaculate greens and the River Bybrook meandering through the middle, bring both drama and beauty to the 6,500-yard parkland course, which is rightly considered one of the best in the South West. The course is renowned for its quality and excellent year-round conditions. Where it is built on a limestone base and Cotswold brash, the natural drainage of the course is superb, meaning it is open 365 days a year, without the need for temporary greens and tees. The club continues to enhance the course with more than ÂŁ130k invested into improvements over the past couple of years. This has included new state-of-the-art greenkeeping equipment, as well as work on the bunkers on the fourth and fifth holes.

Not only do members gain priority access to the beautiful course and member-only tee times, but are also able to enter the busy schedule of competitions, get unlimited range balls to use on the USGA practice facilities, preferential GPS buggy and guest rates – including 10 complimentary guest passes a year, free room hire for up to four parties and meetings per year and also 50 per cent off wedding room hire. But what makes a membership at The Manor House so unsurpassed are the benefits that members get across the whole Exclusive Collection of hotels. The perks include discounts on retail, food and beverage, spa treatments and even overnight accommodation – including at the opulent luxury hotel, The Manor House itself, and The Castle Inn pub and B&B, which are both part of the estate that encompasses the golf course. Golf Club Manager, Andrew Ryan, said: “Other than being a thrilling golf course with spectacular scenery, it’s the friendly and welcoming atmosphere which makes The Manor House so special.

“We’re definitely not a traditional members club and we are proud that each individual member receives excellent customer service and a personal touch. Our aim is to make sure members enjoy every aspect of the club, we already know that they will love the golf course, so it’s our job to make the clubhouse and other areas of their membership just as exceptional.” Originally built in 1992, the award-winning course was relaunched in July 2006, after it was lengthened and resequenced with new 'Tiger Tees' – making it a must for all category one and two golfers. The Manor House hotel is due to reopen for overnight stays on Thursday, July 9, with strict safety precautions in place, including thorough cleaning regimes and hygiene regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other possible infections. The hotel will be stringently following all advice and guidelines from the UK government and Public Health England on PPE and physical distancing measures. n If you are interested in learning more about The Manor House’s membership packages or joining, email andrew.ryan@exclusive.co.uk www.exclusive.co.uk/the-manor-house-golf-club

Accessing your Pension Money sensibly and avoiding Pension scams by Ben Hirst Chartered Independent Whether you have a defined benefit or defined contribution pension scheme, you can often start taking benefits from the age of 55. You could use this to help top up your salary if you are still working or to enable you to work fewer hours or even retire early. You may also be able to release a cash sum from your pension too. Often the first 25% of the fund will be tax-free if taken as a cash sum. The remaining 75% would be counted as income and taxed in the usual way. So care needs to be taken as could push you into a higher income tax bracket for that financial year.

One particular scam to be wary of and avoid is companies claiming they can access your pension money before the age 55. Accessing your pension before age 55 is viewed as an unauthorised payment in most circumstances. The tax you will pay for accessing can be up to 55%, as well as charges of up to 30% by the firm which does it for you.

If a website or marketing brochure advertises that you can or should access your pension before the age of 55, it is unlikely they will be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority and any advice or guidance they give you will be unregulated.
