Why choose GRP?

What is GRP?

GRP stands for Glass Reinforced Plastic (or polymer). It’s also known as FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) or fibreglass. They are all a blend of recycled plastic, recycled glass and a tough, waterproof resin to bond it all together. The materials inherent strength and longevity make it the ideal alternative to steel or aluminium.

Material Characteristics

Slip-resistant

QuartzGrip® moulded fibreglass grating has an integral, angular quartz gritted surface tested in accordance with BS 7976-2. It provides an exceptional level of slip-resistance in all directions. Lifespan depends on frequency of use.

Chemical resistant

GRP is resistant to a wide range of chemicals, across a wide temperature spectrum. It can also be made using different resin systems to achieve specific chemical resistance properties.

Fire resistant

All products contain a fire resistant additive and comply with Euro Class 1 and ISO 11952-2. Perfomance is equivalent to ASTM E84 Class 1 and BS 476 part 7 Class 2 flame spread to give a 30 minute burn time.

Quality assured

Manufactured in accordance with our ISO 9001 accredited Quality Management System, the structural integrity of the material is high grade. A suggested lifespan of 25 years can be expected based on a number of variables: environmental, installation process, maintenance, loading and traffic conditions.

Non-conductive

GRP has zero metal content so is non-conductive.

Self-coloured

All QuartzGrip® moulded fibreglass grating and GRP Profiles are pigmented throughout during manufacture and do not require any secondary treatments such as powder coating or paint spraying.

Lightweight & Durable

Weighing a fraction of the steel equivalents, GRP is lightweight in comparison and can be manoeuvred into place without mechanical assistance. It is exceptionally durable and has the ability to withstand impact, reducing the risk of permanent buckling or deformation.

UV Stable

All products are manufactured with a high quality UV inhibitor to prevent colour degradation.

Economical

In most cases, GRP equivalents to steel components are much cheaper to buy. Add to that the reduction in handling and maintenance costs and GRP is the smart choice. KG

About Us

Decksafe is a brand under Step On Safety Ltd and has been at the forefront of GRP Innovation since its establishment in 2010. We recognized the unique requirements of water-based industries and have been providing innovative, sustainable solutions and specialist expertise. Decksafe now operates in the Marine, Offshore, Aviation, and Utilities industries (water, gas, electric, and nuclear).

We work closely with end customers, designers, engineers, and contractors globally. Our insight and expertise help improve the safety and wellbeing of everyone in the high-risk, industrial environments we specialize in. By consistently turning creative thinking into practical, real-world solutions that maintain the highest standards of safety and durability, DeckSafe Solutions has become synonymous with quality.

GRP has been a staple of the boating industry for years, providing a lightweight, rot-proof alternative to wooden or steel hull construction. The growth now extends to marinas themselves; the same qualities that make GRP ideal for use on boats make it suitable for creating safe, strong, and slip-proof pontoons, jetties, ramps, and waterside decks. GRP is impervious to salt water, will never fade, warp, or corrode, and never needs painting or staining.

We understand the safety challenges presented when working in some of the world’s most dangerous environments. Wherever you are in the world – including mid-ocean – we are here to help. Our products and services are available worldwide.

Designed for Safety. Made for People.

Ports & Harbours

Providing an anti-slip waterside walkway is essential for reducing unnecessary slips while accessing boats of all sizes, especially in poor weather when the vessel is moving and the ground is wet. We can rebuild or rejuvenate your pontoons and jetties by replacing rotten or corroded structural beams with GRP Profiles, improving surfaces with GRP Mini Mesh Grating and adding GRP Handrails.

GRP is impervious to fresh and saltwater, it won’t rot or corrode and resists algae, ensuring the pontoon remains smart and slip-free for decades. If you want to install it yourself we can help by cutting it to size. For a less industrial look, choose WPC decking boards.

See our website for more information.

Access Ramps

A smooth Access Ramp will make life a whole lot easier for anyone on wheels – from child buggies, wheelchairs and mobility scooters to wheeled luggage, tool boxes, trollies, trailers or even road vehicles.

Adding a ramp to improve access into and around ports, marinas and waterside exhibits can be done with mobile or permanent solutions. Whether it’s building a ramp from scratch or improving an existing one with anti-slip flooring or handrail, DeckSafe has the solution you need. Whichever solution suits your situation the best, we guarantee that the GRP element will be long-lasting and low-maintenance.

Choose from Standard or Mini Mesh Grating, Solid-Top or Anti-Slip Flat Plate to create the surface to suit your needs.

Mobile Access Platforms

Typically seen at household waste & recycling centres, a Mobile Access Platform allows people to safely throw their refuse into containers while allowing operatives to move the steps easily from one container to another as they fill up.

It’s not just recycling centres that can benefit from a Mobile Access Platform. They can be built to any size so are ideal for providing flexible cleaning or maintenance access to boats, machinery, lighting, ventilation systems or windows. Wheels are braked so while they’re in use they won’t move around.

GRP is much lighter than the steel equivalents, making the MAPs easier to manoeuvre while maintaining strength. It’s also anti-slip – even when wet, impact-resistant and won’t rust, so will last longer with little to no maintenance. All the materials used are self coloured and UV-stable so won’t chip or fade.

It’s also much quieter to walk on too, helping to

reduce noise on site.

DeckSafe’s Mobile Access Platforms (MAPs) are:

Designed to BS standards with 5kn/m2 loading

• Braked wheels hold them in position while in use

• GRP Grating and Stair Nosing remains anti-slip even when wet or oily

Non-corrosive, non-conductive and long-lasting

• Lightweight, making them easy to manoeuvre into position

Allows safe access for cleaners, engineers and pedestrians

Easy to install and modular in design – can be supplied as full fabrication or in modules

• Bespoke designs can include anti-climb mesh and safety gates

Whether you need to reach the top of a storage tank, or the top of a truck or simply need to reach a machine access hatch or panel to work comfortably and safely our designers will create a solution that meets all your requirements.

From hi-vis solid top fibreglass panels allowing wheeled and foot traffic to move easily into position, to raised open mesh gantries that allow maintenance workers to simply walk over pipes rather than between them. For multi-floor machinery or control panels and maintenance hatches that are installed in hard-to-reach places, gaining access safely can be a challenge.

We can design, supply and install a wide variety of GRP Stairs, Gantries and Access Platforms, ranging in size from simple threshold steps to more intricate high-level platforms that ensure operational and maintenance crews remain safe at all times.

We incorporate Tread Grating in the design of all our fibreglass Stairs and Access platforms. This stair tread is manufactured from 38mm thick grating with an integral solid reinforced nosing for optimal slip resistance.

Maintenance Platforms

GRP Fabrications don’t usually need heavy lifting equipment to manoeuvre into position so are quicker and more economical to install.

Rooftop Access

From building a Staircase to reach the roof, to adding Platforms, Gantries and Walkways that smooth the surface allowing maintenance teams to navigate safely, roof-top access can be as simple as adding a Hop Over or as extensive as resurfacing the whole area.

The DeckSafe Solutions team can help you assess how much or how little is required to assure HVAC engineers safety and allowing easy access to the control units, ducting and vents on your building

All our stairs and platforms are constructed using QuartzGrip® anti-slip GRP grating with edges highlighted with hi-vis yellow nosing to help reduce trips and falls. Platforms and steps more than 400m high are fitted with handrailing, and self-closing gates can be installed where necessary.

Glass reinforced plastic is a fraction of the weight of steel equivalents making it an obvious choice for roof installations. It's also easier to handle, reducing the need for lifting equipment and quicker to install.

Once in place GRP Grating and Structural GRP Profiles are long-lasting and require little to no maintenance. They are UV stable and non-corrosive so won’t fade or rust.

Oil Tanker Walkways

After working closely with our client Barr and Wray for 13 months, DeckSafe Solutions was contracted to design a GRP Raised Walkway on board the deck of an oil tanker being refitted in Scotland. The new layout of services left the deck heavily populated with no safe walking routes or maintenance accessibility.

DeckSafe’s collaborated design provides the safe walking routes for crew members in the most hazardous weather environments. Considerably reducing injury from slips, trips and falls, the maintenance walkways will also ensure M&E services are not damaged by occupants clambering over pipes and conduits.

The substructure boasts a subframe and handrailing system that is both non-corrosive, non-conductive, fire resistant and anti-sparking which is ideal for international sea bearing vessels such as this. The meshed floor panels are also designed in GRP Open Mesh Anti-Slip Grating with DDA and Equality Act Compliant Nosing’s, which hosts the highest anti-slip certification available in the BS and EN standards.

Access Walkways

Getting from A to B around a busy plant, dock or ship is often easier via a raised walkway or gantry – taking you over and around the main hazards – whether those are cables, pipes, chains, gullies or even vehicles. An Access Walkway, built using GRP Profiles, Anti-Slip GRP grating and GRP Handrails will ensure navigation is quick and easy with access points wherever required.

DeckSafe Gantries and Walkways are usually constructed using 38mm QuartzGrip® Anti-Slip GRP Grating supported by GRP structural profiles. Staircases or Ladders can be added at each end or at mid-points providing access with self-closing safety gates and safety hoops where required. Handrails come complete with kick plates to prevent items being dropped over the edge.

GRP Fabrications don’t usually need heavy lifting equipment to manoeuvre into position so are quicker and more economical to install. Once in place, the GRP will never rust or rot, it’s UV stable ,so won’t fade or need painting and is impact resistant so won’t get dented by knocks or dropped equipment, whatever gets thrown at it.

Access Staircases

Whether you need one or two steps to a doorway or platform or a multi-storey staircase to reach a rooftop or mezzanine floor, DeckSafe Solution’s GRP staircases offer an anti-slip, low-maintenance and low-noise solution.

Ideal for replacing slippery metal or rotten wooden steps, the fibreglass treads, handrailing and structural profiles are non-corrosive and UV stable; they’ll never go rusty, they’ll never fade and they’ll never need painting.

Each staircase is designed to meet your specific requirements ensuring all health & safety guidelines are adhered to. It’s then built at our headquarters in Suffolk before being shipped in sections to your site for quick and easy installation – by us or by your own teams.

Staircases that rise 3.5m or more will automatically be designed with a mid point landing

Whether maintenance crews need to climb over a single pipe, a boundary wall or a whole network of cables and ducting, a non-slip Step Over will ensure that they stay safe while preventing the pipes, walls & cables from getting kicked, stepped on and damaged.

Built to suit each site, a Step Over can be made any height, width or length and is usually supplied readymade. GRP is less than half the weight of the steel equivalent, so most Step Overs can be placed manually – no heavy lifting equipment is required. It is also longlasting and low-maintenance.

Typically constructed using QuartzGrip® Standard Mesh Grating and stairs with a SafeRail™ ergonomic handrail, they can be made to your own specifications.

Step Overs

Access Ladders

If a staircase isn’t a viable option, a fixed GRP Access Ladder made to suit your exact requirements, may be the solution you are looking for. Choose from an upright Cat Ladder with optional safety hoops or a Ships’ ladder complete with handrail. Ideal for piers and harbour walls.

Access Ladders Benefits:

• Manufactured from pultruded structural sections

• Resistant to corrosion, non-conductive and nonmagnetic Anti-slip surface

• Suited for use in typically corrosive environments, including salt and fresh water marinas

Manufactured in accordance with BS 4211 and BS 5395.

Ideal to provide sawfe access to raised or underground areas

• Can be designed and built to suit specific requirements

Machine Guards

DeckSafe’s ScreenGuard™ GRP Mesh is just 12mm thick and has a smooth finish, making it ideal to use as a screen to protect operatives from moving machinery. It can be used to create security screens or storage cages, it can be added to handrailing to prevent items falling through, or used as fencing to keep unauthorised people out.

Lighter than steel equivalents, it’s quicker and cheaper to install. It’s also non-conductive and has zero scrap value. GRP does not rust, never needs painting and is impact-resistant so maintenance is minimal.

Bund Floors

Bunded floors are essential to contain spills or leaks from containment tanks but can pose an access challenge for maintenance engineers and will collect debris – especially if outside. Adding a GRP Bund Floor that is level with the surrounding walls creates a trip and slip-free working platform; Access Stairs and Handrails make it even safer.

DeckSafe’s Bund Floors are fabricated using QuartzGrip® Anti-slip Mesh Grating, that sits on a ‘free-standing’ framework made using Universal GRP Structural Profiles. Nothing is drilled into the bund walls potentially compromising their integrity. GRP is waterproof and chemicalresistant so it won’t be damaged in the event of a spill.

Every bespoke floor is made to the exact shape and size of your bund and our expert installation teams will ensure a seamless finish.

Ideal for covering sumps, tanks, drains, manholes, trenches and pits, GRP Mesh – open or solid top – is corrosion-free, chemical and impact resistant and remains anti-slip even in wet or oily conditions. It’s also less than half the weight of the equivalent metal or concrete covers, making lifting it for maintenance access so much easier.

We can cut mesh to any shape or size and can add access hatches or hinges so it can be folded back. Standard or mini mesh versions will allow water to flow through whilst filtering litter and plant debris; solid top versions will keep all dirt and debris out and can also be made water-tight. Our QuartzGrip® Grating is stocked in green, yellow or grey but can be produced in any RAL colour you require.

We can produce covers to your own specification for you to install, or we can install them for you.

Sump & Chamber Covers

We can cut mesh to any shape or size and can add access hatches or hinges so it can be folded back.

Helipads

Our QuartzGrip® Anti-Slip Flat Plate can be cut into quite intricate shapes enabling us to build symbols into a surface. Creating a bold H to indicate a helicopter landing pad on an offshore platform or ship’s deck is a fairly simple process. What’s more, the fibreglass sheeting remains non-slip in all weather conditions and is UV stable so won’t fade over time. The material itself is coloured throughout so the design won’t wear off, ensuring safer landings for years.

Our CAD team can design the landing site to suit your location and our installation teams will ensure it’s fitted correctly.

Offshore Wind Farms

As with any marine environment, accessing an offshore wind farm for even routine maintenance can be difficult – especially in poor weather. DeckSafe’s anti-slip GRP solutions help you do everything you can to keep your crews safe from slips, trips and falls, whether that’s on board the maintenance vessel, transferring from vessel to base or at the base of the turbine itself.

Using GRP mesh panels, structural profiles and handrail systems, we can design, build and install walkways, jetties, pontoons and maintenance platforms to suit your unique requirements. GRP offers many advantages over steel equivalents – it’s lighter, will never rust or rot, won’t fade and remains non-slip in wet and oily conditions. The colours never fade so hi-vis yellow options remain hi-vis for years with zero upkeep.

In isolated offshore locations reducing the risk of trips and falls by using the right surface is critical. In addition to sourcing specialist Phenolic and Vinyl Ester grating and solid top, we are also happy to work closely with our clients to find highly bespoke solutions to suit their specific requirements.

Bespoke Surfaces

We developed unique floor panels for BP to use on their offshore platforms and are now their specified supplier for GRP

That could include special colours, thicknesses, mesh designs, panel shapes or sizes. It could be pre-cutting, pre-drilling or applying branding, directional arrows or warning text. Whatever the situation, we are confident that a solution can be found.

Grating made from Phenolic GRP is the latest and strongest version of GRP to date and is now routinely used in the most hostile of working environments, including oil refineries, oil platforms, underground mining, railways and in shipping. It has the maximum fire resistance and emits little smoke or toxic fumes when burning – critical in enclosed spaces. Its reinforced structure can take exceptional loads – useful where large, uninterrupted spans need to be bridged.

As an offshore solution it has the added benefit of being immune to the effects that saltwater has on many materials. It’s also much lighter than steel equivalents making it easier, quicker and therefore cheaper to install.
