From the Publisher Dear International Reader: Diplomatic Connections is an ambassador-centric publication – interviewing Ambassadors to the White House/to the United States in Washington, D.C., and to the United Nations in New York. Although, in this magazine, we’ve decided to put the focus on travel. Starting in November, our travel journalist, Monica Frim, accompanied by her husband, John, will be taking a three-year cruise scheduled to sail around the globe, planning to visit 148 nations and 382 ports on all seven continents. Their journey begins in the history-rich city of Istanbul, Turkey, where you can stroll the famed corridors of the Grand Bazaar, a monumental landmark established many centuries ago. You can shop for authentic Turkish items, such as beautiful Kilim rugs, elegant lamps, ornately painted ceramics, full-bodied, succulent spices, and the divinely delicious authentic Turkish tea, of course, not to be missed while there! However, you can find luxury brands in the local stores if you prefer to purchase more modern-day items. This city does not disappoint, whether you’re searching for traditional buys or contemporary products. It has something for everyone. The Frims have worked within the diplomatic arena for many years, having lived in four countries, including our beloved nation’s capital for several of those years, and have decided to now reside on a cruise ship for more than a thousand consecutive days, stating that the rate is “less than it would cost to rent an upscale apartment in a major city.” So, the past idea that one must be financially wealthy for this kind of travel is a “myth.” Read our introductory article before the cruise launches on November 1, 2023. Enjoy seeing photos that are chartered ports of call. Diplomatic Connections will be hosting three upcoming trade show receptions, one in Washington, D.C., on October 3, 2023; one in New York City on February 3, 2024; and another event in Washington, D.C., April 2024, in valued partnership with our highly-esteemed hotelier colleagues:

➜ October 3, 2023, at The Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. ➜ February 5, 2024, at The InterContinental Barclay New York ➜ April 4, 2024, at The Willard InterContinental Washington, D.C. If you would like to attend a Diplomatic Connections’ Trade Show Reception in the future as a member of the international community or purchase exhibit space, please send your inquiries to: dparker@DiplomaticConnections.com Sincerely,

There’s something momentous about being the first to embark on an adventure that’s never been done before. So when I heard about Life at Sea’s three-year cruise around the world with stops in 148 countries and 382 ports on all seven continents, I tapped into my nomadic spirit and signed on with nary a thought to logistics, affordability or the opinions of friends and family. I didn’t need to have all the details worked out to know that this was one opportunity that I did not want to miss. We can all dream but not everyone can pack up on a dime, kiss their friends and house good-bye, and either give up their job or become a digital nomad on the fly, or in this case, the sea. It helps to be retired or self-employed, but it’s a myth that you need to be wealthy. Life at Sea has built affordability and accessibility into the world’s first and only three-year cruise. For less than it would cost to rent an upscale apartment in a major city, you can live aboard a ship with almost all amenities included in the price. Remote workers, especially, will appreciate Wi-Fi accessibility throughout the ship, plus rentable office space if they need it. Laundry services, weekly housekeeping, fitness center, swimming pool, entertainment, meals, alcoholic beverages at meal times, even medical consultations and gratuities are included in the price, which currently ranges from $77,026 to almost $200,000 a year per cabin based on double occupancy. Singles get a reduction. The catch is you need to sign on for the full three years, although you may be able to to split the time onboard with another party if you wish to jump ship for a substantial part of the sailing. Simply put, two or more parties can agree to share a cabin at different times. To further sweeten the pot and ease any homesick blues, you can invite friends and family aboard quarterly for up to a month at a time. Whether they share your cabin for a small fee or rent their own depends on both the size of the cabin and the number of people in your party. You could almost spend the entire three years without doling out an additional dollar if it weren’t for shore excursions, spirits or treatments at the onboard spa or 18

salon. Some options simply merit more outlay. Life at Sea is owned and operated by Miray Cruises, a company headquartered in Istanbul, Turkey, with additional offices in Greece and Florida. The cruise line may not be well-known on the American side of the Atlantic, but in Mediterranean and Aegean circles Miray boasts an impressive history of hospitality guest services, floating hotel management and Greek Island tours that go back

to the company’s inception in 1996. But the company’s crowning achievement will be the world’s first and only three-year cruise, due to launch November 1, 2023. As with any never-done-before endeavor, there’s a lot to do, plan and anticipate and many kinks still need to be worked out. When Miray first announced the Life at Sea concept in March of this year, the voyage was to be on the MV Gemini, a ship that normally cruises the Aegean

Sea around Turkey and Greece. Miray had big plans to overhaul the ship for a lengthy ocean voyage that involved turning an entire deck into a business center complete with meeting rooms, offices and a lounge. This cruise wasn’t just for retirees, but remote workers or any leisure seeker dreaming of going to faraway places without the hassle of multiple flights and long lines at airports. It was a winning proposition. People of all ages, career stages and

lifestyles started signing up. Even the Miray team members were surprised by the age span of the passengers, which seemed to be divided almost equally among 30-to-50somethings and retirees 60-to 80-plus, with an almost even split of singles and couples. People began to prepare for their trip of a lifetime, renting out or selling their homes, paring down their possessions, or simply announcing to friends and family that for the next three years they would be living in a portable neighborhood on the ocean, traveling the world. Then two months after Life At Sea made its grand announcement, turbulence threatened the project. The sales and marketing team parted ways with Miray, and some passengers, worried that the cruise would be

cancelled, jumped ship and asked for refunds. Others rode out the company’s internal squabbles and hung on for the promised ride. CEO Kendra Holmes announced that no way was Life at Sea bailing: the cruise would be going ahead, bigger and better than ever. To that end Miray purchased a larger ship, renamed the MV Lara, for the world cruise with the intention of keeping the MV Gemini in its current role sailing the Greek islands. “It just made sense to use the bigger ship for the bigger cruise,” Holmes said. Holmes tirelessly began hosting webinars to reassure existing passengers and to attract new ones. Passengers were given access to an app that allowed them to communicate and get to know each other and the Life at Sea management team. A feeling of

camaraderie developed among erstwhile strangers who would become family while circumnavigating the world together. People began to help each other, offering tips on planning, packing and otherwise preparing for lifealtering adventures. There was talk of forming special interest groups such as book clubs for the literary-minded or cooking clubs for culinary hobbyists and amateur chefs. Sales picked up. Still, one can’t expect perpetual smooth sailing. It’s impossible to predict all scenarios and outcomes. As in any family or group situation, spats will occur, cliques will form and people will opt in and out of groups and activities as they gain their sea legs and adjust to new situations on board. Plans could go awry as politics, weather, or

malfunctions on board could alter even the best-laid plans, so it’s important to know how to roll with the waves. (No one likes a spoilsport or complainer.) Life At Sea is doing its best to make passengers feel at home by asking for passenger input on everything from food and activity preferences to whether they want a magnifying mirror in the bathroom or a UPS box with their belongings delivered to the ship, free of charge. What other cruise company does that? In fact there are many perks that make this cruise like no other in the industry. To coincide with the Republic of Turkey’s centenary celebrations, Life at Sea will provide a bonus three days of accommodations on board the MV Lara while the ship is still docked, so passengers can enjoy Continue to page 24

the festivities and evening fireworks over the Bosphorus. Transportation from the airport in Istanbul to the ship will also be provided free of charge. While other cruise lines do not allow passengers to bring their own alcohol on board, Life at Sea encourages passengers to stock up in port on wine or whatever libation they fancy. They’re even installing mini refrigerators in every cabin for the purpose, as well as coffee machines. “This is not just a cruise ship but it will be your home for three years and we want you to feel comfortable in it right from the start,” says Holmes. Other enticements include very favorable payment options such as the option to stretch payment over three years with no penalty or interest payments. Life at Sea does not impose a limit on credit expenditures—so you can even pay for the entire cruise with your credit card, provided the amount is within the limit set by your credit card company. When it comes to shore excursions, most cruise lines add a hefty surcharge to what actual tour operators charge, which is why many cruise passengers opt to book tours with private operators online. During a recent Life at Sea webinar, Holmes stressed “We will be competitive because we want you to book with us. So we’re working with port agents to get you the best prices. We also want to be sure you get back to the vessel safely.” She opined that prices for excursions could even be lower than what the private online companies offer, because they would be based on group, rather than individual, bookings. On the downside, Life at Sea lacks some of the extra touches that larger or more upscale cruise lines offer. Housekeeping will be weekly rather than daily, but is that really an inconvenience? Surely you can smooth your own bed, but the idea of having someone else vacuum, dust, cook, clean toilets, and do your laundry for three years sounds like heaven on the sea. Of course if you really want to wash your own clothes you can. There will be public laundry facilities on board but you’ll have to buy the ship’s eco-friendly detergent. What there won’t be are climbing walls, casinos (since the casino area is being converted to a business center with offices) and art auctions. If you’re really a die-hard for them, look for those facilities on land or buy your art in onshore galleries. Although there will be entertainment galore in terms of lectures, movies, poker nights, bingo, trivia games, and cultural shows provided by entertainers

from the ports of call, don’t expect to have the multi-cast musical productions of the larger ships. And if you’ve been salivating at the thought of snuggling in your room ensconced in one of those famous Turkish cotton bathrobes, you’ll have to buy your own. Unlike many other cruises, Life at Sea does not offer bathrobes as part of the package. So how does one pack for three years at sea? It’s easier than you might think. For one thing, you will not

need any winter clothing, save for a light jacket or sweater for the odd cool day. The route will be following the sun, circumnavigating the globe once, but crossing the equator six times so as to be in perpetual summer. Should you, nevertheless, find yourself in need of extra clothing or commodities, you will have lots of time to shop in port. Unlike other cruises that spend no more than a few hours in one place, Life at Sea will spend an average of two days in each port with some stays as long as a week, giving you

extra time to pursue your interests and immerse yourself in the culture. How you pack is really up to you—in suitcases that you will take with you on your flight to Istanbul and aboard the ship, or in a large cardboard pod that will be delivered to the ship when it lands in Freeport, Bahamas, two weeks into the voyage. Life at Sea has contracted with UPS to supply the boxes, which you pack at your home. The box/ pod will then be shipped to a warehouse in Florida where Continue to page 34

Croatia it will be stored until its delivery to Freeport. Life at Sea will cover up to $500 for shipping. After the Bahamas, the cruise takes you on a circumnavigation of South America with a midway dip farther south to Antarctica. The trip then traces along the west coast of the Americas to Alaska, with forays to the Galapagos, Caribbean Islands and the Hawaiian islands before crossing to Asia and the islands of the South Pacific. Back in the southern hemisphere, there will be many stops in New Zealand, Australia and a slew of countries and islands in or bordering the South China Sea and Indian Ocean. Africa is next, as the route traces along the continent’s coast up to the northern reaches of Europe before dipping back to the Mediterranean Sea and ending where it all began three years earlier, in Istanbul. I’ve been to ninety-one countries, lived in four and done long trips on six continents. Most were driving adventures in which I’d be gone for up to four months, some in hostile environments such as the Sahara and Gobi deserts. But I’ve never been at sea for more than two weeks at a time, and always on a cruise that never stayed in one place more than a few hours—enough time for a precursory run through museums, shops or parks, but not long enough to get to know the place. I now have a chance to be a trailblazer on the first and longest circumnavigation of our planet by a cruise line. Millions will watch and millions will follow. I could wait to see how it all unfurls before committing my time and savings to this endeavor. But I know no matter what happens, the second time around is never as momentous as the first. Watch this space if you would like to join me—online or onboard! n

Insurance made simple.

Diplomatic Missions. Before our Program, diplomatic missions in the United States have struggled to find sustainable, reliable insurance solutions without straining their budgets. Where most agents were afraid to venture, Sahouri did something bold. With trust in our expertise, partners, and services promise, our firm leveraged its strong carrier relationships to design a proprietary and exclusive diplomatic missions insurance program for underserved missions in the United States. As the only program of its kind, our exclusivity allowed us to immerse ourselves in the market, develop expertise, and in turn provide value for every insurance pain point foreign governments face. Embassies. Permanent Missions. Consulates. Ambassadors. Government Sponsored Students.
