03. PRIMARY SCHOOL DESIGN

The school is desi gned for orphans from underprivileged and marginalised communities . The school caters to students from age 3 to 9 years old and accommodates grades from kindergarten to grade 3.

The project follows the sustainable design process with the main material; rammed earth and timber. The main idea behind the project is the connection between programs and the users. Courtyard acting as a connector is a centralised space which acts as a common space for the student and teachers. The courtyard provides a pathway and creates a visual axis from the teacher’s quarter to the student’s residence.

The programs are divided in terms of four major activities i.e learn, play, interact and work. The programs are placed according to the site conditions. The learning spaces are placed at the northern side towards the community forest to provide a peaceful learning environment. While the service areas are placed at the south towards the road which acts as a buffering space.

The ground floor consists of an administrative block, library, lab, service and three kindergarten classes which open up both to the courtyard and outdoor learning/ play spaces towards the north. The first floor consists of three primary classes, an eca room and a terrace which acts as a play/ interacting space gaining the warmth of the sun and views of the south.
