Dear brothers and sisters, During my pilgrimage to Rome last June, I joined a tour group that visited the Sistine Chapel after-hours. If you’ve ever been to the Vatican Museums, you know that the Sistine Chapel is the attraction that is often the most crowded, with a few hundred people all trying to look up at the same time and sneak a photo or two without the guards catching them. Let me say, to be in the chapel and to see the frescos with only about 100 other people was powerful and moving. I mean, as I thought about it, that’s fewer than the number of Cardinals that were in the chapel during the Conclave that elected Pope Leo! Coming home, the experience inspired me to rewatch the 1965 movie, “The Agony and the Ecstasy,” which tells the story of Michelangelo’s painting of that Sistine Chapel ceiling. I think it’s a great movie in which Charlton Heston brings the brilliant artist to life. I love the battle of the wills between Michelangelo (Heston) and Pope Julius II (played by Rex Harrison). Over and over, the frustrated and impatient Pope Julius asks, “When will the murals be done?” “When I am finished,” is always Michelangelo’s reply. As I watched the movie, I smiled when I realized I’ve been hearing a version of that exchange more and more.

Nine months have now passed since Archbishop Checchio took his seat in the Cathedral of the Basilica of Saint Louis in New Orleans for the first time. If you’re curious, it was at 2:27:45 p.m. CST, on November 18, 2025. I made a point of recording the exact moment our diocese became a Sede Vacante (a vacant see).

In the days and weeks that followed, the predictions began. Some in our diocese were expecting our new bishop to be named only a month later, by Christmas.

Others thought our new bishop would come before Holy Week. Of course, the reality is that we still do not have our new bishop (unless of course he is named

No bishop can be licitly ordained without a mandate signed by the Holy Father saying essentially, “Reverend Father [name], by virtue of our Apostolic authority, we elect and appoint you Bishop of [place]”. You may remember the recent news story about excommunications of members of the Society of St. Pius X, since their ordinations of new bishops took place on their own initiative and without the Papal Mandate.

Paragraph of Canon 377 states that consideration of possible candidates for bishop begins on the local level, where these priests’ work has been witnessed by others. “At least every three years”, the Canon states, “the bishops of an ecclesiastical province (dioceses with an archdiocese are clustered into what we call a “Province,” the way groups of cities in New Jersey are clustered into a “County”) are to compose in common counsel and compose a secret list of presbyters (priests) … who are suitable for the episcopacy and send it to the Apostolic See.” The bishops of a Province are asked who they believe are “worthy and suitable.” The bishops meet, these candidates are discussed, and names are submitted to the Apostolic Nuncio. These can be either priests of a diocese or priests who are members of a religious community.

After the Nuncio has been given priests’ names for consideration, he is then asked to (1) Ask local bishops their thoughts about the person(s); (2) Confidentially contact those in diocesan leadership as well as other clergy, religious, and laity within the proposed place of assignment, asking them what the particular needs are of that place and what strengths or gifts might be helpful for a new bishop of that territory to possess. After this consultation and

some opinions are gathered, the Nuncio is asked to present to the Dicastery of Bishops candidates he believes would be suitable for the position(s). Traditionally, three names are submitted to the Dicastery in a list called a “Ternus” – Latin for “three” - which may be additionally vetted before being submitted to the Holy Father in order of recommendation. The Pope may choose the recommended priest, any of the other priests on the list, or name someone not on the list at all (perhaps someone he knows or worked with).

covers the particular Paragraph situation when a diocesan bishop believes there is need for an auxiliary bishop (or bishops) in his diocese. Auxiliaries are usually given in (arch)dioceses with a large population, where the presence of additional bishops able to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation would be helpful.

Paragraph specifically says that no civil authorities, no elected governments or sovereign heads of state have the power to nominate or appoint bishops.

The Church has had a history of dealing with secular governments claiming the power to name Catholic bishops in their territory. Remembering what we read in paragraph 1, the choosing of bishops is in the ecclesial realm.

Here we should take a pause so I may tell you we should remember the practical truth that the Papal Nuncio is just one man, the staff of the Nunciature is a limited number, and I’m sure there is other diplomatic business to which they must attend. Bishops are obliged to submit their resignations to the Pope at age 75. Currently there are 20 bishops of U.S. dioceses that are already over the age of 75, with an additional four who will turn 75 by the end of this year.

We can assume the investigatory work has begun to appoint their replacements.

Here I purely speculate when I say that these appointments are probably handled akin to a judicial court docket, where these investigations are processed in the order they were received. In other words, there may “be a line ahead of us” as we await a new bishop. Let’s pray it moves quickly.

Unlike Disney, there is no “Fastpass” to bypass the lines.

I hope this helped you understand better the question of how bishops are chosen,

and why the process takes some time. I wish I could answer the “when” question or tell you at what point we are for the Appointment of the next Bishop of Metuchen, but I honestly do not know. Like the father of the Prodigal Son, every day I look on the horizon and hope today is the day. I invite you to spiritually wait with me and continue praying to The Holy Spirit to enlighten and inspire Pope Leo in his task of choosing the next Bishop of Metuchen.

Prayer for a New Bishop Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest and Good Shepherd, we thank you for the many blessings that you have poured on our local Church of Metuchen. We thank you for James, our fifth Bishop, and for his many gifts in shepherding your people.

Hear our prayer for the selection of a new bishop for the Church of Metuchen.

We pray for Leo, our Pope, that he is given wisdom in discernment and given wise counsel as he selects our next bishop who would be ever more conformed to You, the Divine Master.

Lord, we pray that our next bishop will have a heart on fire for you and for your Church. May he be filled with wisdom, faithfulness, holiness and zeal for reigniting the faith and spreading the Gospel throughout our Diocese.

Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Your mother and ours, draw our new bishop, and the flock entrusted to his care, to the fullness of eternal life, where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever, Amen.

The New Jersey Catholic Conference (NJCC) has launched a new Education Freedom Tax Credit website, njscholarshipcredit.org, to serve as a central resource for parents, students, schools, communities, potential donors, and legislators seeking information about the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit.

The website explains how the program works, who could benefit, how New Jersey can participate, and how residents can help support its implementation. Visitors can also sign up to receive updates as the process moves forward.

The Education Freedom Tax Credit, established by Congress in 2025 as part of the Federal Budget Reconciliation Act, allows individuals to contribute up to $1,700 annually to authorized Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs) and receive a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit.

If New Jersey participates in the program, eligible families with children in public, nonpublic, and, where applicable, homeschool settings could receive scholarships to help cover K-12 educational expenses. These scholarships may be used for tuition, books and supplies, tutoring, remedial services, enrichment programs, and other qualifying educational costs, expanding opportunities for students and helping families choose the educational environment that best meets their children’s needs.

“The federal Education Freedom Tax Credit represents a tremendous opportunity for New Jersey families to access the Catholic school education they desire for their children. Every family, regardless of income or zip code, deserves the ability to choose the educational environment that best nurtures their child’s academic, moral, and spiritual growth. This program, funded entirely through voluntary private donations rather than state tax dollars, is a win for students, families, and communities alike,” said diocesan Superintendent of Schools Joseph Diskin.

However, these benefits are not automatic. Although the federal program has been established, each state must choose whether to participate. New Jersey has until Dec. 31 to opt into the federally funded program. If state leaders approve participation, Scholarship Granting Organizations could begin accepting contributions eligible for the federal tax credit beginning Jan. 1, 2027. Because the scholarships are funded through private donations supported by a federal tax credit, the program does not require New Jersey state taxpayer dollars.

That makes advocacy especially important in the months ahead. The NJCC encourages everyone interested in expanding educational opportunities for New Jersey students to stay informed

Slated to coincide with the Feast of Saints Anne and Joachim, the patron saints of grandparents, the morning included a keynote from St. Peter’s University Hospital Advance Practice Nurse Joanie C. Lynn (above left, at podium), who offered practical tips on how to age safely and faithfully.

Lynn, a graduate of the University of Maryland (BSN), The College of New Jersey (MSN), and Rutgers University’s mini-MBA in Strategic Healthcare Management, is also an educator, preceptor, and clinical coordinator whose contributions span academic preparation, bedside teaching, and professional development.

She has played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the APN profession at St. Peter’s University Hospital for more than two decades, earning her multiple institutional and professional honors; since 2005, Lynn has helped develop and expand

The day concluded with a Mass celebrated by Father Jonathan Toborowsky, diocesan administrator, with Father Gustavo Rodriguez-Perez, coordinator of Hispanic Lay Formation, as concelebrant. Eliciting laughter from the congregation as he described the challenges of growing fruit trees and tomatoes in his garden, Father Toborowsky called the congregation, “the living examples of that in your own families.”

“It takes a while to bear fruit,” he said. “Learn from your wisdom: vines need tending. It is a wonderful task we do. Your mission now… is to keep that love of God going, cause it to spread, to take root. It is with us always, no matter how far we go.”

innovative programs including the Clergy Health Practice, the Clinical Bedside Skills Program with the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh, and the Bedside Integrated Observership Program.

During her presentation, Lynn assured her audience that this was their fruitful season in life, quoting Psalm 92:14, “They will still bear fruit in old age.”

“How much more does our Holy Father ensure our well-being in every season of our lives,” she asked. “We must maintain our physical and mental well-being to continue to be good stewards.”

The nurse shared numerous tips on aging in place gracefully and safely: transform your home as early as possible (by installing sensor lights, removing throw rugs, keeping tile floors dry or installing grab bars); keep minds sharp by learning a new language or new dance; practice using the nondominant hand to aid in post-stroke recovery, and be kind to one’s body (slow down or take a nap).

“Rely on God’s strength,” Lynn advised.

Reflecting upon their continued impact with the younger generations, Lynn challenged the seniors, “I ask each of you to think what we are doing with our time.

Does it reflect your deepest values? If not, what could we change to be a better reflection of yourself and change the legacy you choose to leave?”

Lynn offered further suggestions on what would serve the safety needs of the seniors: close communication with one’s doctors (“discuss what serves your needs so we can help you,”); keep walkers/wheelchairs in good condition; examine shoes for uneven wear caused by uneven gait; take up appropriate exercise such as walking, chair yoga and other exercise; maintaining steady sleep patterns and healthy diet, and relying on others with grace to stay independent as long as possible.

Being active in outside activities helps adults of all ages. Lynn’s suggestions included volunteering at one’s parish seniors’ group, vacation Bible school, choir or food pantry.

The theme of this year’s World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly draws on a powerful promise from Scripture: “I will never forget you” (Is 49:15). In his message for the sixth celebration of the day, Pope Leo XIV reminded Catholics that this promise should shape how all treat the older adults in their lives.

“The painful feeling of being forgotten is, unfortunately, shared by many people, and among them are quite a few elderly people,” Pope Leo wrote, echoing his predecessor’s reasons for establishing the day in 2021.

While the celebration normally falls on the fourth Sunday of July near the July

26 feast day of Jesus’ grandparents Sts. Joachim and Anne, in the United States it is transferred to the first weekend after Labor Day (Sept. 12-13 in 2026), coinciding with a pre-existing national holiday that celebrates grandparents.

Here are a few practical takeaways from Pope Leo’s message for the day.

1. Take time to see the unique person and remember your worth as a child of God. Pope Leo warns that the elderly can become invisible as they age, becoming isolated in their homes or becoming just a bed number or an illness in a care home.

Observing the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly is “an opportunity to

rediscover that the Church is called to be a mother to all and that at any age it is always possible to recognize ourselves as sons and daughters of God.” 2. Make a real human connection, not just a digital one.

“The digital culture multiplies connections and offers new opportunities for interaction; yet, the human heart retains an irrevocable need for genuine closeness,” Pope Leo wrote, quoting from his encyclical on humanity in an age of technology, “Magnifica Humanitas.”

Pope Leo encouraged young people to “revive the beautiful custom of visiting their grandparents,” elderly family members and “even those who have no one to visit them.”

Pope Leo appeals for dialogue, diplomacy, prayers for just peace in Holy Land, Middle East

By Linda Bordoni Vatican News, OSV News Pope Leo XIV on July 26 renewed his urgent appeals for peace in the Holy Land and across the Middle East during his Angelus address in Castel Gandolfo, expressing deep concern over the escalating violence and calling for an immediate return to dialogue.

“I continue to follow with deep concern the ongoing and escalating violence in the Holy Land, where, in recent days, many civilians, both in the West Bank

and in Gaza, have once again fallen victim,” the Pope said.

“I make a heartfelt appeal for a return to negotiations to achieve a just political solution, founded on the equal dignity and equal rights of every human person,” he continued. “At the same time, I urge the rejection of further military actions and unilateral decisions, especially those that violate the respect for and the status quo of the holy places of every religion.”

Throughout the Middle East, he said, “the intensification of military operations has once again brought violence

and destruction, placing the lives of countless civilians in grave danger and worsening the shortages of drinking water and electricity.”

The Associated Press reported late July 25 that the U.S. military “has paused its airstrikes on Iran after nearly two weeks of intensifying bombing, while diplomatic efforts have pushed forward to try to avert a return to all-out war.”

On July 24 in the ‌ occupied West Bank, according to Reuters, four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers were killed near a Palestinian village in a con-

“In this time, so harshly marked by the violence of war and social unrest, many wonder what the world in which their grandchildren will grow up will be like,” the Pope wrote. “I urge you, dear friends, to join me in praying earnestly that peace may soon come to the whole world.”

Pope Leo encouraged everyone to continue praying for all peoples throughout the world who are suffering because of war.

“May the Lord touch hearts and enlighten the minds of those in positions of responsibility, so that reconciliation and peace may soon prevail,” he said.

Pope Leo XIV’s August prayer intention is ‘for evangelization in the city’

By OSV News Pope Leo XIV is inviting Catholics to pray “for evangelization in the city” as his August prayer intention, asking the Lord to accompany millions searching for meaning amid the noise and haste of urban life.

In his monthly “Pray with the Pope” video, Pope Leo expressed his hope that urban environments may provide “fertile ground” for proclaiming the Gospel.

The Chicago-born pope acknowledged that while cities are meant to be places of “freedom and opportunity,” they can also become “spaces of anonymity and isolation.”

“Make us a Church that goes forth, able to reach out to the peripheries, to console those who are lonely, and to sow fraternity and connection instead of giving in to indifference,” the Pope prayed.

Today, almost 45% of the world’s population lives in urban areas, making cities one of the largest mission territories of our time, according to the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.

Pope Leo said in his prayer for the month of August.

Pope Leo XIV said the conscience of just one person can “be worth the entire world” when it comes to preventing a nuclear catastrophe, in a new book foreword that also quotes an unpublished Bob Dylan song about the atomic bomb.

The Pope made the remarks in a foreword published July 21 for a forthcoming book, “Disarmed and Disarming: Peace Is a Gift,” which the Vatican Publishing House says will soon be released in English.

In the essay, Pope Leo cited lyrics from an unpublished 1963 song by Bob Dylan, “Go Away You Bomb,” and he praised the pacifist Servant of God Dorothy Day as an example of someone who worked for peace.

“Above all in the atomic era, the affirmation of the truth must push through: it is not atomic weapons that generate peace, but disarmament,” the Pope wrote.

He said that idea, which felt self-evident during past decades of nuclear de-escalation, “has been obscured by a race to armament that today frightens and terrifies.”

The Pope, quoting singer-songwriter Dylan’s lyrics figuratively addressed to the atomic bomb, wrote, “’I hate you cause yer man-made and man-owned an’ man-handled.’”

Pope Leo said that “peace seeks witnesses,” pointing to figures such as Blessed Floribert Bwana Chui and Servants of God Giorgio La Pira and Dorothy Day as examples of people who advanced peace by resisting corruption, backing diplomacy and aiding the poor.

The Pope wrote that peace is also carried forward by “little-known protagonists” who acted on their own conscience, recounting the story of Soviet officer Stanislav Petrov during the Cold War. On Sept. 26, 1983, radar systems at a bunker near Moscow where Petrov was on duty indicated that the United States had launched multiple intercontinental ballistic missiles at the Soviet Union.

The alert turned out to be a malfunction in the Soviet satellite detection system.

Petrov disobeyed orders and declined to pass along the warning of an attack, a choice the Pope said was made “with the conscience of someone who knew that that simple gesture could have caused millions of deaths.”

“A world in which machines, albeit sophisticated and faster than us, are the ones to decide to bomb defenseless people would be truly frightening,” Pope Leo wrote.

“The conscience of a single person can be worth the entire world.”

“If there is one thing the world is seeking today, I believe it to be a message of peace for the future,” the Pope added.

The book compiles addresses and reflections on peace that Pope Leo has delivered since his papal election. In the foreword, signed July 19, the Pope lamented that 103 countries are involved in some form of conflict around the world, citing wars in Ukraine, the Middle East, Sudan, Myanmar, Yemen and Congo, among other places.

since no leader openly admits to wanting war for its own sake. He wrote that after the devastation in 1945 of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, resorting to war is increasingly an “adventure with no return,” echoing words from St. John Paul II in 1991.

“Peace is a responsibility,” Pope Leo wrote. “It begins with us.” Quoting a sermon by St. Augustine, he said, “’The times are troubled, the times are hard, the times are wretched.’ Live good lives, and you will change the times by living good lives; you will change the times, and then you’ll have nothing to grumble about.’”

To those tempted toward despair over the world’s ongoing wars, the Pope pointed to the words that Pope Pius XI extended to the entire Church, “’Let us thank God that He makes us live among the present problems. It is no longer permitted to anyone to be mediocre.’”

“May God guide us on paths of non-violence,” Pope Leo said. “May believers and people of good will never stop working as builders of peace. May every person make peace his or her life’s cause.”

In a recent visit to a parish family, I witnessed the husband spontaneously sneezing some nine times in a row. His wife indicated after his first sneeze that it would likely become a nine-time sneeze.

She was right. Of course I said: “God bless you” following his first sneeze.

Someone else called out: “Gesundheit” which means “health” in German. It is a secular way, across cultures, to respond to someone who sneezes without invoking God. Believe it or not, the common response, “God bless you” is attributed to 6th century Pope Gregory 1 (Gregory the Great) who suggested this response when the deadly bubonic plague swept across Europe. A first sneeze was often assumed to be the first sign that a person was infected by the terrible disease.

The phrase “God bless you” has been used as a typical benediction by priests and others from the earliest days of the Church. It is also a benediction used in Judaism and found in the ear-

liest Old Testament books: “May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up his continence upon you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26).

In our present culture, it is important

that we continue the wonderful custom of using the phrase “God bless you,” not only when a person sneezes but in various conversations throughout the day.

Have you ever finished an exchange with a receptionist at the doctor’s office or at the dentist or even after staying on hold with the bank, the credit card company or the Insurance agency, with the words, “God bless you?” Have you ever used this phrase following your exchange at the supermarket, at the local dry cleaners or at a restaurant?

Curiously, many workers at retail stores and other service centers are most pleased when they hear the words, “God bless you.” Somehow it seems to give them permission to return the favor. On certain occasions, by their verbal response or demeanor, it is quite obvious that the person who hears us say, “God bless you,” is somehow offended. However, words have power. That is why the Eternal Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us. So, you never know how powerful our “God bless you”s can really be. The words may echo in the mind and heart of the one who responded awkwardly, and they might revisit the words at a later time. This becomes all the more possible when the same person hears us say, “God bless you” each and every time we encounter them.

When we use the phrase, “God bless you” we are also making a statement about ourselves. We are saying that we acknowledge the Eternal and Almighty God; Creator of the universe. We are saying that we ask His Providential power and might to intercede within our ordinary human interactions. We are asking His blessing upon the people within our lives: family, friends, associates, superiors, employers, employees, adults and children alike.

As well, our use of the phrase “God bless you” helps insert the presence of God into the ordinary, daily lives of people who may have no one else who cares enough to help make God’s presence known to them. Imagine for a moment, a lone cash register attendant who was never baptized and never grew up with parents who cared enough to give them the very best – the person of Jesus Christ.

In fact, I am still astonished when I hear people tell me that they learned about Jesus only in the context of the Easter bunny, Santa Claus and the good fairy.

Jesus is, for many, a symbol of goodness but certainly not God Incarnate. Such a sad commentary on a decaying “Christian influenced” society. No wonder the number of “Catholic” parents no longer provide the best gift for their child – being born-again in Christ through the waters of baptism!

No wonder our prayers rising each day and each evening to heaven have become flickers of light rather than a brilliant light shining from earth to heaven.

No wonder the influence of our prayers (like the family rosary) is much less powerful than decades and centuries past. No wonder that our acts of Christian charity have become random acts of kindness rather than consistent, ongoing, overwhelming signs of the presence of Christ in our midst. No wonder a recent study a few years ago suggested that some 70% of Catholics no longer believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist but rather a symbolic act (no different than the Lutherans or other Protestant churches).

Incredible how “practicing” Catholics have embraced the teaching of a fallen away, excommunicated priest named Father Martin Luther from the 16th century rather than the teaching of Jesus Christ in chapter 6 of St. John’s Gospel, the Eternal Word of God made flesh in first century Judea.

We live in a post-Christian society where the majority prefer to place God on the back burner. It should come as no surprise that in so doing, we are unleashing the evil one and his demons upon our world in a more active and prevalent manner. He prowls the earth, looking for souls and uses every means possible including the lack of prayer and lack of “God bless you”s in our midst. He also uses our so-called new resources like the Internet, social media and even AI (artificial intelligence) to make ever greater strides into our lives.

Next time you hear someone sneeze, whether once or nine times, use the response of Pope Gregory the Great rather than the secular “Gesundheit” which intentionally or unintentionally avoids any reference of God. ‘Baby in Bloom’ Community Baby Shower offers hope, support for local families

More than 100 mothers, expectant parents, volunteers and community partners gathered May 30 at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi in Metuchen for the “Baby in Bloom” Community Baby Shower, a day of faith, fellowship and practical support for growing families.

Sponsored by The Pioneer Volunteer in partnership with Life Choices Resource Center in Metuchen, the free event provided mothers with essential baby items, educational resources and opportunities for encouragement in a welcoming, faith-filled environment.

The event was made possible through the gracious support of Father Timothy Christy, rector, and Kara Kwiatkowski, director of administration and HR at the Cathedral, whose hospitality helped bring the community together.

“Baby in Bloom” was the vision of Laura Dickinson, founder of The Pioneer Volunteer, an organization dedicated to inspiring volunteerism, and Mrs. New Jersey America 2025. Partnering with Life Choices Resource Center, a pro-life pregnancy resource and limited medical center

in Metuchen, Dickinson sought to create a celebration that both honored mothers and connected them with practical assistance.

Life Choices Resource Center provides free pregnancy testing, limited obstetrical ultrasounds, educational resources, lactation support, material assistance, information on the risks of abortion pills, post-abortion counseling and referrals to community services.

Featured speakers included Dickinson; Raychelle Jackson, founder of Keep New Jersey Clean, Mrs. Hunterdon County America and a contestant for Mrs. New Jersey America 2026; Dr. Ellen James, founder of Every Mom’s Village and Mrs. New Jersey International 2026; and Elaine Yunker, consultant and director of outreach for Life Choices Resource Center.

The day began in prayer, led by Sister Josephine of the Religious Teachers Filippini, who welcomed the mothers and their families. She invited those gathered to pray Sarah Kroger’s “Litany of Belovedness,” offered a blessing before the meal and encouraged guests to

visit a faith table featuring rosaries and prayer cards.

Throughout the day, mothers and expectant mothers were invited to select, free of charge, the items most needed for their families. Donations included diapers, wipes, clothing, shoes, strollers, infant seats, car seats, toys, formula, thermometers, cloth diaper covers and many other essentials.

Guests also enjoyed the opportunity to receive more than 100 donated prizes, including baby equipment, luggage, handbags, jewelry and other household items.

In addition to receiving practical support, mothers were treated to chair massages, hair, nail and makeup stations, flower bouquet making, painting activities and a selfie station.

Laura Dickinson prepared a homemade breakfast, and Maria’s of Milltown provided a catered lunch. Each guest also received a gift bag to take home. Spanish-language translation and lactation specialists were available throughout the day to ensure families could fully participate and access available resources.

The event welcomed families and

volunteers from throughout central New Jersey, including representatives from the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, Life Choices Resource Center, First Presbyterian Church, Uniendo Ministerio, Good Counsel Homes, JFK Medical Center, The Pioneer Volunteer and St. Ladislaus Church.

Organizers expressed their gratitude to the many volunteers whose generosity made the event possible. Volunteers assisted with setting up tables and displays, preparing and serving food, registering guests, helping mothers select and transport baby items, and cleaning up at the end of the day.

Special thanks were extended to The Pioneer Volunteer, Life Choices Resource Center, St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, the Metuchen Knights of Columbus and the many individuals whose time, donations and spirit of service helped make “Baby in Bloom” a joyful celebration of mothers, children and the gift of life.

Catholic memorial for those lost to suicide is a place to pray, feel ‘God’s love, peace’

By OSV News Chicago-area Catholics now have a new place to pray and remember loved ones lost to suicide. Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois, has dedicated a memorial garden believed to be the first of its kind created by a U.S. Catholic archdiocese in a Catholic cemetery. The peaceful space features a long walkway leading to two striking sculptures: a large bronze angel and a stainless-steel spire topped with eight life-sized doves, symbols of hope and peace. The project was led by Auxiliary Bishop Lawrence J. Sullivan, the archdiocese’s vicar general, alongside retired Father Charles Rubey, who has directed a Catholic Charities suicide bereavement program since 1979. The garden offers a place where grieving families can pray, encounter God’s love, and find peace in the midst of loss, said Bishop Sullivan, who blessed the memorial during a June 26 dedication ceremony. The bishop, former head of the archdiocese’s cemeteries, said he and Father Rubey first started talking about the garden memorial called “At Peace” about six years ago. “This is a place for people to come and to just spend time with the Lord, to be with God in prayer, to feel his love, to feel God’s peace,” Bishop Sullivan said.

Reading may be falling down, but there are still books to lift up

The headline for the cover story of August’s “The Atlantic” magazine is downright depressing: The Age of Reading is Over. The accompanying article,

by Rose Horowitch, cites recent research showing that fewer than half of Americans now read a book within a calendar year, and only 16 percent read for pleasure on any given day, among other sobering numbers. personal price. In the end, the cause itself can be tarnished.”

Thus, the importance of grounding external work on behalf of social transformation within a person’s ongoing inner work of spiritual conversion.

The author draws deeply from his multiple decades working and living at the junction of faith, social action and politics. For example, Granberg-Michaelson served in the office of former Oregon Senator Mark Hatfield, and he also had an important role in the World Council of Churches. Yet he is as comfortable writing about a month he spent at the Trappist monastery of Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, Va., as he is invoking his time with Senator Hatfield.

Each of these movements is treated in detail, and each has their own nuances, but in general they are all characterized by the importance and need for surrender and relinquishment, which is at the heart of contemplative living, whether one spends most of their time in a monastic cell or in the public arena.

Traversing these four movements helps us begin to realize our truest self.

And when we do, the author states that “you are discovering your connection with and embracing your participation in, the love that is ever moving to transform the world.”

As you flip past the title page of his book, the first words you are greeted with are from an unknown Dominican priest, who said in 1975: “To be a Christian is to be a contemplative, and a revolutionary.” Those provocative few words alone give plenty of food for thought to ponder.

Fortunately, there are approximately 200 more pages that follow, fleshing out what it all could mean.

spirituality. And there’s no shortage of reading material for those who want to make the world a better place. But putting those two together? Not as easy to find something.

That’s where Wesley Granberg-Michaelson’s The Soulwork of Justice: Four Movements for Contemplative Action (Orbis, 2025) makes an important contribution. s “People of The Book,” which is a Muslim classification for folks such as Christians, Jews and those of other faith traditions who believe that divine revelation is contained in inspired texts, this is disconcerting news. If we’re not turning to books in general, does that also mean we are not turning to our Scriptures, as well?

The Atlantic article landed in what is traditionally a prime season for reading: the summertime. When we think of summer reading (apart from obligatory school reading for students), or, more specifically, when we consider “beach” reading, we usually think of light, entertaining books that can be absorbed while simultaneously engaged in other outdoor activities along the ocean, in the backyard or on the front porch. Books from the genres of mystery, thrillers and romance are especially popular in this regard during the summer.

I’m still doing my part to pore through an ever-present pile of books in my room. Even though I haven’t traveled to any seaside this summer, I did read – and recommend – one new novel that could possibly count as an excellent beach read: Matt Haig’s The Midnight Train, which has been favorably compared to the beloved feel-good movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

However, my most substantial read this summer was a book that tackles the integration of our inner life with our desire for societal and planetary justice.

The one-day Life-Giving Wounds retreat, held July 11 in the diocesan Pastoral Center and sponsored by the diocesan Office of Family Life, included a keynote address by members of the Life-Giving Wounds staff, Eucharistic Adoration and Holy Mass with Father Timothy Eck, who serves as chaplain for the Metuchen chapter of the agency.

Life-Giving Wounds, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, aims to help young adults and adults with divorced and separated parents voice their pain and find transformative healing in Christ.

It is a Catholic, peer-led ministry with chapters throughout the country which provides unique programs and means for Christ to transform their life-draining wounds into life-giving resources of faith, hope, love, and joy for themselves, their relationships, and the Church. Its motto comes from 1 Peter 2:24: “By His Wounds You Have Been Healed.”

Cristina D’Averso-Collins, director of the diocesan Office of Family Life, explained the value of the interactive

workshop. “Catholicism upholds the understanding of lifelong marriage,” she said. “When it is not upheld, the couple experience a loss and need to validate that. We are all broken, and forgiveness is important.”

She continued, “This is a very taboo subject to many. There are groups out there for the separated and divorced, but this is an untapped area. A huge part of this program is letting go, how to be at peace even with the things you didn’t choose. It’s not about blaming parents

or shaming them, it’s about reaching out and forgiving them even for the pain they did not know they inflicted,” D’Averso-Collins said. “Christ is at the center.

He is the wounded healer.”

The organization’s website shares the sobering statistics: roughly 1 million children a year experience their parents’ divorce; 2/3 of young adults who had been regularly attending a church services at the time of their parents’ divorce say that no one from that faith community had reached out to them at that time, and there is a 40% or higher chance that adult children of divorced parents will themselves divorce.

Attendees of the retreat were guided by the retreat workbook, “Life Giving Wounds: A Catholic Guide to Healing for Adult Children of Divorce or Separation” (Ignatius Press, 2023), written

by Dr. Daniel and Bethany Meola, who co-founded the organization and hold degrees in theological studies from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family in Washington, D.C. Topics of discussion included grieving the loss of their parents’ love for each other; realizing how the parents’ fractured relationship may have affected their faith, identity and relationships,

and discovering the healing power of redemptive suffering and true Christian forgiveness.

Retreatants explained the benefits endowed by the retreat and the opportunity to share their healing journeys with like-minded Catholics.

“The LGW Retreat was truly an amazing experience,” said one attendee.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the heartfelt talks given by the speakers and meeting others who understand the similar challenges and feelings of coming from divorced/ separated parents… For the first time in my life, I was in a room of people who truly understood how I have been feeling my whole life and to share in the same faith with all of them was incredible too.”

Another added, “It is really edifying to spend time with other Catholics who have experienced something similar to the pain of my parents’ divorce and the ongoing family drama that has happened.

I am so grateful to have a Catholic community to share this with!”

Calling the retreat “a profound gift of God’s grace,” a third retreatant continued, “It gave me the opportunity to come face-to-face with the pain of my parents’ divorce in a safe, faith-filled community.

For the first time, I was surrounded by others who carried the same wound. I felt deeply understood, accompanied, and reminded that I was not alone.”

Another woman stated, “I encountered Christ’s tender love and felt him gently touching places in my heart that had remained hidden for years. Through tears, prayer, and the support of this beautiful community, I experienced hope, peace, and a renewed trust that God can redeem even our deepest wounds. I left with profound gratitude for His healing presence and for the Church, which so lovingly accompanies us on the journey toward wholeness.”

When my dad died unexpectedly, leaving me to care for my terminally ill mom, life began a slow emotional descent. At home were six sons, each at a different stage of growing up. There was a full-time job, graduate school and, as an only child, the responsibility of making my father’s final arrangements.

Grief had to wait. The priority became bringing Mom home to live out her remaining days surrounded by family. That decision meant taking a year away from graduate school and leaning heavily on the extraordinary Haven Hospice team, whose compassion made the journey possible.

Still, something inside was unraveling.

There comes a point in many difficult seasons when determination is no longer enough. We can keep putting one foot in front of the other while quietly losing ourselves along the way.

One Sunday, all the frustration, fear and exhaustion came with me to church.

“How do you expect me to handle all this?” was the silent prayer directed to God. The answer arrived almost immediately. A tap on the shoulder revealed a tall man with an easy smile. “You should join the parish choir,” he said.

Really? That was God’s solution?

One more commitment when there already weren’t enough hours in the day?

Yet grace doesn’t always arrive wrapped in the package we expect. Sometimes it comes disguised as an invitation that feels inconvenient. Sometimes the lifeboat has no haloed captain, only an ordinary person and a simple suggestion.

“You have a lovely voice,” he continued. “Let me introduce you to the choir director.”

Jerome sang bass. His wife, Pat, sang alto. Over the next three decades, they and many others became far more than fellow choir members. They became

faithful companions through seasons of joy and sorrow.

The choir turned out to be much more than music. It became God’s answer.

Looking back, it is striking how often God works this way. Rarely does he remove every hardship. More often, he places people, gifts and opportunities along the path that give us strength to keep walking. A conversation. A friendship. A ministry. A creative gift waiting to be rediscovered. These become quiet expressions of his presence.

Most people will face a season when life feels too heavy to carry alone. Not everyone begins with a strong support system, but community can be cultivated. Sometimes it grows in the most unexpected places, among people united by a shared purpose and the simple joy of creating something beautiful together.

Music became that place for me, but the same grace can be found through painting, gardening, writing, dancing, baking or woodworking. Human beings were created in the image of our Creator.

Whenever we create, something within us begins to heal.

Too often we convince ourselves that what we make must be extraordinary to have value. But creativity is not about perfection. It is about openness. In the act of creating, we learn to surrender – to let go of control long enough for God to meet us there. That practice of surrender gradually teaches us to release other things we cling to as well.

These days, age is slowly diminishing the singing voice that carried me through so many years. Another season of letting go has begun, accompanied by hopes of filling more pages before meeting my Maker.

Perhaps that, too, is another invitation.

The choir taught a lesson that has never faded: When life becomes overwhelming, God often provides exactly what is needed – not always by changing the circumstances, but by changing how we are able to walk through them. Looking back, the greatest gift was never simply finding a place to sing. It was discovering that God’s grace so often arrives in the form of people willing to stand beside us until the song can be sung again.

By Courtney Mares, OSV News As dusk settled over the Pontifical Gardens of Castel Gandolfo on July 29, Pope Leo XIV listened as Andrea Bocelli led 164 young voices in a hymn, prompting the Pope to offer a reflection on how beauty can lead us to God. “The beauty of music invites us to encounter the one who is beauty itself,” Pope Leo remarked after the international children’s choir performed with the tenor in the Vatican’s Borgo Laudato si’ gardens.

“It is significant that Sacred Scripture and the Liturgy of the Church speak of ‘choirs of angels and saints’ when describing the joy of heaven,” he added, “not because they are literally singing all the time, but because united in love they behold God together and find in him the fullness of happiness.”

The Pope sat before the choir as Bocelli led children and teenagers from the Holy Land, Uganda and Italy in singing “Amazing Grace” as the final song of the evening. The Italian tenor also sang the Latin hymn “Panis Angelicus” for the Pope.

The children’s choir was made up of participants in the Andrea Bocelli Foundation’s “Voices Of” program, which pairs choral singing with educational workshops for children in communities affected by poverty, conflict or limited access to schooling.

“My dear young friends, as you were singing, did you notice how music drew all of us into an experience of something new, something that was greater than any one of us alone could create? This is the experience of beauty,” Pope Leo told the choir.

When one seeks beauty, the Pope added, “we discover not simply something, but Someone. We encounter God our Creator.”

The young singers, ranging in age from 8 to 19, traveled from Bethlehem and Jerusalem, the Ugandan village of Nabikabala, and the Italian cities of Naples and Camerino to take part in the performance, the culminating moment in a 10-day program in Italy sponsored by the charitable foundation. Choir members from Haiti were unable to travel because of ongoing instability in the country, organizers said.

“Continue to cultivate the gifts that God has given you, and allow them to lead you towards him,” Pope Leo told the young singers. “He is everything we are looking for in life, the one who alone can quell our restless hearts.”

“Remember that you have been made for great things, and that this world is not enough to quench your thirst for meaning and happiness,” he said.

The night of musical performances and prayer, held in the Borgo Laudato si’ gardens near the papal summer residence where Pope Leo spent much of July,

was part of the jubilee year celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi.

Sister Alessandra Smerilli, whom Pope Leo recently named the prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, read aloud St. Francis’ 1225 poem “The Canticle of the Sun” praising God’s creation, while other members of the Roman Curia read excerpts from writings of past popes and passages of Scripture between songs under the garden’s Roman pines.

about 500 employees of the Dicasteries of the Holy See, the Governorate of Vatican City State and offices of the Roman Curia. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani also was present and briefly spoke with the Pope after the concert.

At the conclusion of the performance, children from the choir presented Pope Leo XIV with gifts from their home countries. Cardinals and members of the Curia were then invited to a dinner reception in the gardens as the sun set.

general of the Laudato Si’ Center for Higher Education, said the event reflected the mission of Borgo Laudato si’ as “a place where faith becomes an encounter and peace is built by caring for individuals, communities, and creation.”

“Let us entrust this ‘Canticle of Peace’ to the Lord, so that the song that rises from this place today may reach hearts, cross borders and become a seed of hope for the world,” the cardinal said.

Pope Leo XIV traveled to Assisi Aug. 5 to celebrate the Jubilee Year of St. Francis with 2,500 young people, urging them to become the “new saints” the world needs today.

The Pope celebrated Mass at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels on the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord for participants in the “Go! Franciscan Youth Meeting,” a four-day gathering of young people ages 18 to 33 from across Europe.

The basilica was built on the site where St. Francis founded the Franciscan order.

“Dear young people, today Europe and the whole world are looking to you to be new saints. Dare to believe in the word of the Gospel; become fully human with the freedom of Jesus Christ,” Pope Leo said in his homily in the basilica that encompasses the small chapel where St. Francis founded the Franciscan order.

“Unite the best energies of your magnificent humanity: your studies, skills, work, friendships, love and prayer, so that you can bring Saint Francis’ vision to life in many different ways,” he added.

The Pope’s visit is part of the Church’s celebration of the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’ death and coincides with the annual August celebration in which pilgrims flock to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels to receive a

plenary indulgence linked to a mystical experience of St. Francis.

The Pope flew from Vatican City to Assisi by helicopter in the morning. Before Mass, he met young people gathered in the piazza in front of the basilica and answered some of their questions, offering advice about vocations and discernment.

He told them that “the deepest vocation, written in every human heart, is a call to communion,” a truth he said sin can obscure. Thankfully, he added, every vocation is also a journey toward redemption and healing.

“Jesus’ invitation to follow him reveals our own dignity and teaches us to honor the dignity of others by placing our trust in them and proving ourselves worthy of their trust,” Pope Leo said. “This dynamic is so liberating that it deserves the wholehearted commitment of our lives.”

Pope Leo also reflected on the instability of modern life, saying “the stability that once characterized traditional societies is disappearing” and that a confused sense of freedom can leave people feeling nothing is ever truly settled. In that environment, the Pope said, “the courage to make a definitive choice may well be the most revolutionary act of all.”

without ever truly arriving anywhere,” he said. “We may multiply our experiences, our acquaintances and our possessions, yet remain in exactly the same place. The human cost is immense, and the inner emptiness that follows is profound.”

Saying “yes” to forever, the Pope added, “is a grace which God himself enables us to respond to through our own fidelity, so that we may attain the fullness of life.”

Reflecting on his own personal vocation, Pope Leo said, “Looking back on my own life, I can say that the Lord has never left me alone. He has always accompanied me, often by placing people beside me with whom I could share the journey.”

“As a priest, as a member of the Augustinian community and as a missionary, I found a light that has guided me to this very day.”

After speaking with young people in the piazza, the Pope greeted representatives of the Franciscan orders in the basilica’s cloister before celebrating Mass.

The opening procession began outside, where the Pope blessed young people who followed the Mass from the piazza under the summer sun.

earthly here but someone supernatural.”

Moreover, Nicodemus knows that the phrase “Kingdom of God,” used only once in John’s Gospel, is a synonym for “eternal life.”

Nicodemus is struggling with the question: “How can I be born into this eternal life?” Instead, the good man gets distracted by the phrase “born again” and concludes that Jesus is talking about a physical re-birth, which he knows would be anatomically impossible or it would have to be one of those miracles that made some rabbis appealing. So, he asks: “But how can a man be born again?” Jesus helps Nicodemus to understand by putting this “eternal life” in perspective.

Eternal life, like any grace, is not a matter of human effort or accomplishment. It’s the result of ‘being born from above,’ in other words, it’s a gift from God, mediated to us through his Son, Jesus. Once you’ve accepted Jesus into your life, which we do through Baptism, you’ve accepted the grace of salvation, which is to say, the gift of eternal life.

John, however, is more than an evangelist, he’s a clever preacher: He doesn’t use big words like “supernatural,” which seem abstract and might confuse others; instead, remembering the words of Jesus, he makes a great analogy between wind and spirit. He writes: “The wind blows where it wills.”

Wind is very mysterious. We don’t know its origins or goal, just like we don’t know why one member of our family is a believer and another is not. But it’s real. Because the wind is perceptible in its known effects, the experience of the wind makes it real for us. So it is, analogously, with divine life. Maybe we don’t completely understand the origin of grace,

but we know it is for real because we experience it, that is, we can see its effects in peoples’ lives. Christians take their whole lives and examine it through their faith.

Wind and spirit – both are real – we know this by our experience of their effects.

“So, Nicodemus, how can we be born again?”

This misunderstanding of Nicodemus underscores John’s genius. Unlike Matthew, Mark and Luke who teach that eternal life is given to believers after death, John is of the opinion that we are born children of God. From the very start, we are gifted, our whole life then becomes a response to this gift from God. “How do our lives exude gratitude for our being gifted, children of God?” That’s our challenge which we can embrace with gusto or, like Nicodemus, we can go through life and, despite our intelligence, our goodness, our wisdom, just not get it!

Like all priests and religious, I pray the Liturgy of the Hours each day. The Liturgy of the Hours is a group of short prayer sessions made up for the most part of the Psalms. These sessions are spread throughout the day, beginning with Morning Prayer. There is Daytime Prayer, Evening Prayer, Night Prayer, and the Prayer of Readings which includes a longish passage from the Bible and another from a Church Father or a saint or some other Church writer.

The Liturgy of the Hours is the prayer of the Church, the prayer of the people of God, and with our daily praying of the Liturgy of the Hours we try to make holy the hours of the day and night. As we pray, we lift up to God the needs and the desires, the hopes and struggles of the whole world.

We join our voices with those who pray, and we give voice to those who do not.

Praying the Liturgy of the Hours helps us to share in the actions and the longings of

all people whom we may not know and to lift their lives up to God. Each Hour of the Liturgy usually has three Psalms and then a short passage of Scripture. The other day, at the beginning of Morning Prayer, I started praying Psalm 84: “How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord God of hosts! … Happy are they who live in your house, O Lord, forever singing your praise. Happy are they in whose hearts are the roads to Zion. As they pass through the Bitter Valley they make it a place of springs …” I stopped … Heavens! That’s my psalm! That’s where I took the title of my column in The Spirit!

It might sound odd, but I never think of the title of this column. I write my monthly article, but I think of it as “my article for The Spirit” or “my Spirit article.” That might be because I write for various other platforms and groups of readers. Anyway, I was startled when I remembered that Psalm 84 gave me that beautiful phrase, “A Place of Springs” and I stopped to ponder why I love that phrase so much.

When I started writing for The Spirit, I explained why I chose this phrase as the title of my column, but it is so evocative that there is always more to discover in it, which is true of all the Bible. Scripture is so rich that one never comes to an end of one’s exploration into its depths and heights, its lights and darknesses.

We all need a place of springs, a place where we find peace and refreshment. A place of springs is a place where our mind recalls the restful sound of flowing water, that voice of endless, uplifting movement.

It is a place where action and peace meet and enrich each other. A place of wonder without demands. A place outside of time that gives meaning to time, a place of rest that gives meaning to action. A place where we can recover from the struggles and challenges of ordinary, everyday life.

A place where we can regain our wholeness in God and discover new facets of what He calls us to be.

It is a place that can be found only by those “in whose hearts are the roads to Zion” for they are the only travelers who seek it, even if they do not know that it exists. A place of springs is a place that comes into being when it is found and not before because it is those who find it who cause it to exist. No one else has the power to do so. A place of springs has no single location. It can be found anywhere, even and, in fact, especially in darkness and bitterness, for it exists wherever its discoverers go and it is they who transform the space where they tread. Nicodemus appears only in the Gospel of John. He represents a group of people of good will, who look favorably toward Jesus. Nicodemus acknowledges Jesus as a teacher come from God. In fact, he calls Jesus “Rabbi,” thereby indicating that Jesus is saying things worth considering.

Nicodemus is both a ruler and a Pharisee, which, John suggests, means that he is a person from the higher echelon of Judaism. While Nicodemus is of good will, John the Evangelist points out that this man is, nevertheless, theologically inadequate. Why? At this time in Judaism, certain rabbis were followed because they performed miracles. Believing in anyone based solely on the performance of miracles alone is a power-play. It’s insufficient faith, notes John, because Jesus is not merely one of your great rabbi-wonderworkers (which Nicodemus understood him to be). So, Jesus, through the pen of John, challenges Nicodemus, who is a good man, to go further in his understanding, if he dares to become Christian.

Jesus instructs with authority: “… no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is begotten from above.” As soon as Jesus opens his mouth, he shakes Nicodemus of his wrong rational convictions. The words “from above” immediately trigger in the Rabbi’s head a blunt fact: “We’re not dealing with someone

Christian marriage, and spent time in Eucharistic Adoration reflecting on Christ’s gift of Himself in the Blessed Sacrament.

The camp also emphasized putting faith into action. Children decorated lunch bags for the parish’s “Sandwiches for 60” ministry, which provides meals each month for people experiencing homelessness through Somerset Hills Interfaith Partnership (SHIP) in Somerville.

The week concluded with Mass celebrated for campers, their families, and the parish community by Father Jay Siceloff, pastor, and Father Joe Illes, parochial vicar. Campers led the congregation in songs they had learned throughout the week, bringing to a joyful close five days of discovering God’s “original recipe for love.”

“This year’s Bible Camp theme was inspired after attending a diocesan seminar on Theology of the Body,” said Michele Lobo, parish catechetical leader and camp director. “So often, Theology of the Body is misunderstood, and we thought camp would be a great opportunity to explain these teachings in a fun and engaging way. I loved how the gingerbread man with a heart on his chest became such a simple representation of body and soul.”

Throughout the week, 57 junior volunteers in grades seven through 12 and 16 adult volunteers guided campers through rotating activities that explored Scripture and Catholic teaching while reinforcing a central message: Every human person, body and soul, is intentionally created and deeply loved by God. The camp’s bakery theme transformed familiar foods into memorable teaching tools. A gingerbread man illustrated the unity of body and soul; donuts introduced the “original” state of humanity before sin; a wedding cake highlighted the Sacrament of Marriage; pretzels pointed to Jesus, the Bread of Life, in the Eucharist, and angel food cake parfaits celebrated the hope of the Resurrection and eternal life.

Hands-on activities reinforced these lessons. Campers built balloon-powered rockets to symbolize following God’s path through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, braided friendship bracelets to represent the bond of husband, wife, and God in

Rutgers Catholic Center student, aspiring Catholic journalist, earns national recognition

“The connections made and lessons learned certainly extend beyond my time at the conference,” Berwick acknowledged.

Poised for Success “I am extremely grateful for this experience, especially for the chance to meet my fellow recipients,” Berwick said. “I learned from professionals on a variety of topics, including how to build a brand, engage with influencers, explore AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) analytics, and use visual storytelling and photojournalism techniques. I have already started applying the insights and skills I learned to my work.”

When she enrolled at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, she immersed herself in the campus ministry known as Rutgers Catholic, participating in retreats, serving as a cantor for Masses, being on the executive board and even acting as the organization’s first social media intern.

Berwick, who earned her bachelor’s degree with a journalism major and a creative writing minor in May, completed two social media internships with Ascension Press – where she enjoyed learning about the creation of faith-based content.

She also applied her skills to Rutgers Catholic by taking photos during events, creating social media content and helping to build a new website for the ministry.

“I am hopeful that these efforts will allow us to reach more students on campus and invite them into our incredible community,” she said.

Expanding Skillset Also working for the Rutgers newspaper, The Daily Targum, Berwick had the chance to contribute an article, and to explore her interest in photography as contributing photographer, taking more than 400 photos for eight different NCAA Division I sports. An internship with the university’s Division of Student Affairs also gave her the chance to photograph major on-campus events like a dance marathon and concert.

“I loved learning how to tell visual

stories with each photograph,” she said.

“I look forward to continuing to grow in both my writing and photography skills.”

Berwick noted that, with her mother being her “CCD” teacher, faith had a central place in her household while growing up. “Faith has always played a large role in my family’s life,” she said.

“It has been our foundation through both blessings and challenges.”

As she prepares for the next chapter in her journey, the recent graduate has ambitions to work in Catholic media.

“I certainly hope to stay in the field of Catholic media and journalism,” she said.

“Whether that is working in a full-time role or simply volunteering to help local parishes with their websites and social media, I am excited to see what the Lord has in store and what the future holds.”

A Brief History of the Catholic Church in Central New Jersey Part IV: Two Bishops From Buffalo

Bishop Thomas J. Walsh 1918-28 When Bishop James McFaul died on June 16, 1917, the United States had only been involved in World War I for a few months. The Diocese of Trenton would be without a bishop for nearly eleven months before Pope Benedict XV named Father Thomas J. Walsh, a priest of the Diocese of Buffalo on May 10, 1918.

Born in Parkers Landing, Pa., in 1873, the Walsh family moved to New York State, where Thomas and his brothers attended public schools. Discerning a call to the priesthood, he attended the college and seminary at St. Bonaventure’s in Allegany, N.Y.. After his Ordination to the priesthood in Buffalo in 1900, he quickly moved up the ecclesiastical ladder, serving the dual positions of secretary and chancellor under Bishops James Quigley (later Archbishop of Chicago), Denis Dougherty (later Cardinal Archbishop of Philadelphia) and Charles H. Colton.

Receiving permission to study in Rome, Father Walsh completed doctoral degrees in both theology and canon law in the space of one year, returning to Buffalo to again serve as secretary to the bishop and chancellor. Showing a great empathy for the many immigrants in the Buffalo area, he founded the Mount Carmel Guild, an association of Catholic women who volunteered in a number of charitable concerns, a forerunner of today’s Social Ministry programs.

Consecrated a bishop at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Buffalo on July 15, 1918, Bishop Walsh was installed at St. Mary’s Cathedral on July 31. The Diocese consisted of 186,000 Catholics, 191 priests, 133 parishes, 55 missions, 49 parish grammar schools and five Catholic high schools.

Education would be a huge priority.

During his tenure, 47 parochial schools and 13 Catholic high schools were built. He was often quoted as saying “I’d rather lay the cornerstone of

one Catholic school than of 10 Catholic churches.” Between 1918 and 1928, the Catholic school population would increase from 16,000 to 41,000 students.

And while Catholic schools were a priority, 14 parishes and 25 missions were established in that time, among which were St. Paul’s in Highland Park; St. Cecelia in Iselin; Our Lady of Lourdes in Whitehouse Station, and Sts. Peter and Paul in Great Meadows, the latter two parishes serving large Polish populations.

Sacred Heart in Manville and St. Joseph in New Brunswick were established to serve the Polish communities there, Our Lady of Peace in Fords served a large Hungarian community, and Our Lady of Lourdes in Milltown served a largely French population, one of the few French national parishes in New Jersey.

Bishop Walsh also encouraged many religious communities to expand their facilities and services in the Diocese. The Religious Teachers Filippini – an order who Bishop Walsh truly took “under his wing” opened Villa Victoria Academy in Trenton, schools in New Brunswick and Perth Amboy and established a United States motherhouse and Province for the Sisters in Trenton.

The Sisters of Mercy moved their college division in Watchung to the newly acquired George Gould estate, Georgian Court in Lakewood, with the financial assistance of James Cox Brady (renaming the college after the estate), and the Redemptorist Fathers established San Alfonso Retreat House in Long Branch, which continues to serve Catholics throughout the state.

As he had done in Buffalo, Bishop Walsh established the Mount Carmel Guild across the Diocese to serve those in need, with the Guild responsible for the establishment of Parent-Teacher Associations in Catholic schools around the diocese.

Bishop Walsh headed the Trenton Diocese from the end of World Wat I through the Roaring Twenties. He arrived shortly before the 1918 pandemic shut down churches and schools. The Morgan munitions explosion in Sayreville occurred in October 1918, killing nearly 100 persons and causing widespread damage in South Amboy and Sayreville.

And while many people welcomed the changes in society, others did not.

Alarmed at the continued growth of the Catholic Church in the United States, cross burnings were witnessed by many Catholic churches. On Christmas Eve, 1923, parishioners arriving for the first Midnight Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes in Whitehouse Station were greeted by this flaming emblem. The following month a cross was burned across the street from Our Lady of Lourdes in Milltown, and in 1925 a cross was burned in Milford on the day of the groundbreaking for St. Edward the Confessor Church.

The Holy See recognized Bishop Walsh’s many accomplishments by naming him an assistant to the Pontifical Throne in 1922. On March 2, 1928, Pope Pius XI appointed him the fifth bishop of Newark. Installed on May 1, 1928 in the unfinished Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Bishop Walsh led the Newark Diocese through the Great Depression with an amazing building program of schools and churches, the move of the diocesan seminary from the Seton Hall campus in South Orange to its new campus in the Darlington section of Mahwah, the re-opening of St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, the opening of Caldwell and Felician Colleges, as well as moving the motherhouse of the Religious Teachers Filippini from Trenton to Morristown.

As in Buffalo and Trenton, the Mount Carmel Guild was established in 1930, with a special focus on catechist training for those Catholic children attending public schools and the establishment of the Catholic Youth Organization throughout the Diocese. In 1937, the Province of New Jersey was created with the establishment of the Dioceses of Camden (which reduced the Trenton Diocese considerably) and the Diocese of Paterson, with Bishop Walsh becoming the first Archbishop of Newark.

Seeing the Archdiocese through World War II, Archbishop Walsh saw the beginnings of postwar growth of the area through the late 1940’s. He oversaw a major expansion of the Seton Hall campus and its receiving university status in 1951, yet at his death on June 6, 1952, one project – the completion of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart – remained unfinished.

Archbishop Walsh’s funeral Mass was offered at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in downtown Newark, following which his casket was interred in the bishop’s crypt below the sanctuary of the new cathedral.

Bishop John J. McMahon 1928-32 The four years that Bishop John J. McMahon served as the fourth bishop of Trenton saw the United States go from “boom to bust.” The late 1920’s were still years of prosperity for many – a prosperity

which collapsed with the crash of the stock market in October 1929, and the beginning of the Great Depression. Building loans which Bishop Walsh took out in the 1920’s had to be renegotiated by his successor – a fellow priest and friend from Buffalo – whose episcopate would be the shortest in diocesan history for many years.

Bishop John McMahon was born in Hinsdale, N.Y. in 1875. After graduating St. Bonaventure College and attending its seminary for one year, McMahon transferred to the Urban College of the Propaganda in Rome and was ordained a priest at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome on May 29, 1900. Returning to Buffalo, he served at two parishes, founding St. Mark’s in Buffalo where he served as pastor for 20 years.

While his friend and classmate, then-Father Walsh, was studying in Rome, Father McMahon served in a number of his positions, eventually becoming the diocesan superintendent of schools. On April 26, 1928, Father McMahon was consecrated bishop at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Buffalo. During his four years in Trenton, Bishop McMahon oversaw the construction of additions on both Morris Hall and St. Michael’s Children’s Home and during his tenure, St. Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick moved into new facilities at its present location. His concern for the youth of the Diocese led to the establishment of Camp McMahon outside of Clinton in Hunterdon County, which operated for several seasons. Due to the Depression, only three parishes were opened during those years, among which was St. Thomas the Apostle in Old Bridge in 1932. In ill health for the previous three years, shortly before Thanksgiving, 1932 after undergoing two serious operations in Trenton, Bishop McMahon returned to Buffalo for an examination by his brother, who was a doctor. He returned briefly to Trenton, then returned to Buffalo shortly before Christmas to enter Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, where he died on December 31, 1932, as he prepared to celebrate Mass.

After funeral services at his old parish, St. Mark’s in Buffalo, Bishop McMahon’s remains were returned to Trenton for a Mass offered by Bishop Walsh at St. Mary’s Cathedral on January 5, 1933. Following the Mass, Bishop McMahon was buried in the bishop’s plot at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Similar to the 33 day pontificate of Pope John Paul I in the Fall of 1978 and the four year episcopate of Bishop Vincent DePaul Breen, Bishop McMahon’s short tenure has left to conjecture what might have been had he served longer.

The Trenton Diocese would now wait even longer – from January 1933 to February 1934 – to learn who their new bishop would be.

Schism has been a perennial problem throughout the history of the Church.

The most renowned schisms are the formal break between the Western (Latin) Church and the Eastern (Greek) Church in 1054 (which still has not been reconciled) and the Great Schism that lasted from 1378 to 1417 during which two and briefly three - men simultaneously claimed to be the rightful Pope.

To avoid any misunderstanding, these movements are not to be confused with the various churches within the Catholic Church. The Diocese of Metuchen is part of the Latin Church but there are other churches as well, each with their own rites and traditions, such as the Byzantine, Armenian, and Syriac, among others, that are in full communion with the Pope.

They may worship differently and vary in their requirements for priestly celibacy, but they are in no way schismatic.

The Catholic Church in the United States has had two schismatic movements founded within its borders over the centuries. This article will examine the two schismatic movements established in the United States – the Polish National Catholic Church and the American National Catholic Church.

The Polish National Catholic Church (PNCC) The Irish were the first large wave of Catholic immigrants to arrive in America starting in the 1840s. Soon, they began to so dominate ecclesiastical affairs that at one point there were as many Irish bishops as there were bishops of every other nationality combined. It was once said that the four markers of the Church in America were One, Holy, Irish, and Apostolic. Inter-ethnic rivalries caused many rifts in the Church during this era with each group vying for dominance or at least a seat at the table.

Some Polish immigrants in Scranton, Pennsylvania felt marginalized by the complete absence of Polish bishops and the scarcity of Polish-speaking priests. They also objected to a decree of the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1884 that gave bishops title to diocesan properties. These Catholics demanded that parochial property built by their members be controlled by administrators they themselves elected and there be no

appointment of non-Polish priests to their parishes without parishioner consent.

In 1896, parishioners at Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Parish in Scranton founded an independent parish under the leadership of their former priest, the Rev. Franciszek Hodur. Everyone involved was immediately excommunicated. In 1904, at a synod held in Scranton, several other independent parishes voted to form the PNCC. It adopted a constitution, elected a lay-clerical Supreme Council, and unanimously elected Hodur bishop. Hodor reached out to bishops of the Old Catholic Church movement, who had broken with Rome after the First Vatican Council in 1870. In 1907, he was consecrated a bishop in Holland by the schismatic bishops of the Old Catholic Church.

Today the PNCC claims more than 25,000 members in more than 120 churches throughout the United States and Canada. The Roman Catholic Church considers the sacraments of the PNCC to be completely valid. The PNCC holds to the same dogmatic and moral theology as the Roman Catholic Church but there are differences in church governance.

PNCC priests and bishops may marry but deacons cannot officiate at weddings.

They do not ordain women nor do they perform same-sex marriages. The PNCC was performing masses in the vernacular (mainly Polish) long before the Second Vatican Council permitted it.

The American National Catholic Church (ANCC) Like the PNCC, the ANCC accepts the dogmatic theology of the Roman Catholic Church but with many significant differences in sacramental and moral theology. ANCC allows married clergy, openly homosexual clergy, ordains women, permits artificial contraception as well as abortion, allows divorce and remarriage, marries same-sex couples,

Other Schismatic Movements Other schismatic movements operate in the United States though they originated in Europe. The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) was founded by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in the early 1970s. Lefebvre challenged the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, especially the use of the vernacular in the Mass, and had his faculties withdrawn in 1976

by Pope Paul VI. Lefebvre ignored this suspension and began establishing SSPX chapters in other countries. The main break came in 1988 when Lefebvre consecrated four bishops without Vatican approval. All were excommunicated.

Pope Benedict XVI lifted the excommunication in 2009 but SSPX still enjoys no canonical status. Pope Francis, however, granted faculties to SSPX priests to hear confessions and perform marriages with the permission of the local bishop. This permission was withdrawn in July 2026 when the society consecrated four additional bishops without Vatican approval.

Pope Leo XIV excommunicated these men as well the two bishops who consecrated them. Currently, there are some 750 SSPX priests with more than 250 seminarians in formation. Lay adherents are estimated between 500,000 and 600,000.

Finally, Roman Catholic Womenpriests was founded in Germany in 2002 when a schismatic bishop from Argentina attempted to ordain seven women to the priesthood. In this case, because the Catholic Church does not possess the authority to ordain women, these ordinations are invalid and those who attempted it are excommunicated. Therefore, any sacraments performed by Womenpriests have no efficacy. They cannot validly say Mass, impart absolution, and the Womenbishops who were consecrated cannot perform any valid ordinations.

So what is schism exactly?

Schism is a crime under canon law punishable by excommunication. Canon 751 defines schism as “the refusal of submission to the Supreme Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.” Schism is more than simple disobedience. Rather, it is the refusal of a Catholic to recognize the authority of the Pope or his bishops or to recognize that a given person or group, say, an entire religious order, is not in communion with Rome when they, in fact, are. As the name suggests, it refers to a split or a fracture in the body of the Church. Those who completely reject the legitimate authority of the Catholic Church invariably create their own version of it. Rejecting dogmatic Church teaching is the crime of heresy and rejecting the Christian faith entirely is the crime of apostasy. Commonly there is overlap in these actions as many who leave the Church to start their own do so over issues of theology or ecclesiastical governance. Thus, the self-appointed 16th century reformers who, though baptized Catholics, formed their own churches, could be both heretics and schismatics.

Schism can happen when a bishop consecrates another bishop without Vatican approval. Doing so creates the most serious kind of schism as that bishop is now validly (but not licitly under canon law) a bishop even though he and the bishop who consecrated him are both automatically excommunicated. However, any priests they ordain are validly priests even though they too are also excommunicated. This act creates a branch of the Roman Catholic Church which is not under papal control but can be perpetuated indefinitely via valid Holy Orders.

Because Holy Orders is a sacrament, and a sacrament cannot be undone, an excommunicated priest or bishop can still perform some sacraments. When they say Mass, transubstantiation occurs.

However, no Catholic in good standing is permitted to partake of the services of these schismatic groups except in the most extenuating circumstances.

According to canon 205, “those baptized are fully in the communion of the Catholic Church … who are joined with Christ in its visible structure by the bonds of the profession of faith, the sacraments, and ecclesiastical governance.” It is mainly on this last point - ecclesiastical governance – that makes the movements

permits pre-marital sex among committed couples, and offers the Eucharist to non-Catholic Christians. Like the PNCC it operates on a conciliar model where the bishop is elected by the laity.

The ANCC was founded by George Lucey, a resigned Franciscan bishop who is openly gay, in 2009. As such, any bishops consecrated by him would be valid as would the priests he ordains. Presently the ANCC has 14 parishes throughout the United States and as of 2019 some 2000 members. They commonly lease church space from Protestant denominations to hold services. The ANCC conducts an on-line seminary though some of their clergy are Roman Catholic priests who have defected to their movement.

“One of my favorite things about Saint E’s is the sense of community and friendship. Everyone is welcoming when I walk in – not just my friends and the teachers, but some people that I don’t even know or talk to that much,” she said. “Everyone always has a smile on their face, and I just feel so comfortable and welcome at school.”

Sixth-grader Reagan also reflected on the sense of family and community there, highlighting the school’s buddy program that pairs older students with younger pupils, and the consistent support and dedication offered by teachers.

“We don’t just go to school and come back out,” she said. “The teachers help after school, and we are friends with everyone from all grade levels.”

Experiences like these are common at the Bernardsville school, which this year marks its 110th anniversary as well as its recent recognition as the “Best Private School” through the Somerset Hills Readers’ Choice Awards program.

Donley praised the school’s faculty, adding that new teachers are supported through a mentor program launched this year – through which veteran educators share their expertise and experiences with newer colleagues.

Disarm your words, because education does not advance with polemics, but with the meekness that listens. Look up. Do not waste time and opportunities: ‘quoting an Augustinian expression: our present is an intuition, a time that we live in and of which we must take advantage before it slips out of our hands.’

In conclusion, dear brothers and sisters, I make my own the exhortation of the Apostle Paul: “You must shine like stars in the world, holding high the word of life” (Phil 2:15-16).”

PHILADELPHIA (OSV News) -- About 300 Catholics gathered July 25 at St. Augustine Church in Philadelphia’s Old City for a rare celebration that brought the sights, sounds and prayers of early American Catholic life back to life. Held in thanksgiving for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and on the feast of St. James the Apostle, the evening featured solemn vespers and the singing of the ancient “Te Deum.” The event began outside the historic church, where Father Robert Pasley led a procession of six priests, Revolutionary War reenactors and fife-and-drum musicians. A reenactor dressed as a member of the “Jersey Greys” recited the Declaration of Independence, signed less than a mile away, while a choir sang English-language hymns of the time calling for God’s providence upon the revolutionary cause. Inside the church, worshippers took part in nearly two hours of 18th-century Latin vespers, offering a glimpse of how Catholics in the nation’s earliest years would have prayed. Vespers is “one of the offices of great praise and rejoicing, so it’s appropriate to celebrate the founding of our country,” said Father Pasley, the lead officiant and rector of Mater Ecclesiae Chapel in nearby Berlin, New Jersey.

(OSV News) – The new public name of Catholic Scouting America is meant to both clarify and strengthen the New Mexico-based organization’s 100-plus-year commitment to faith, family and adventure through the values-based lessons of Scouting – all grounded in the Catholic faith. The National Catholic Committee on Scouting announced the new name in June. Catholic Scouting America is a partner with Scouting America – known as Boy Scouts of America until May 2024 – so boys and girls in Catholic Scouting have access to the activities, programs, and resources that have shaped generations of American Scouts. As of 2024, there were 130,888 active Catholic Scouts and leaders in 194 U.S. dioceses and eparchies with a Catholic Committee on Scouting, and Catholic Scouting service projects provided an estimated value of $52 million in aid. The name change “aligns more with what our mission is, and tells people what we really do,” said Bill Guglielmi, Catholic Scouting America’s national chairman. Asked why a boy or girl should join Catholic Scouting America, Guglielmi said American youth and their parents “are yearning for something” in today’s high-tech world, and Scouting allows kids “to learn about themselves by doing things, not just looking at a screen.”

SOTILLO DE LA ADRADA, Spain (OSV News) – Severe wildfires raging across central Spain have forced a community of Augustinian nuns to evacuate their monastery as record-breaking blazes sweep through the region. The sisters of the Monastery of the Conversion in Sotillo de la Adrada fled their home on July 25, taking shelter at a neighboring Augustinian convent in Talavera, about 26 miles south. The disaster has burned over 120,000 acres in the province of Ávila alone, marking the largest wildfire in Spain’s recorded history. Driven by extreme heatwaves affecting both Spain and France, the fires have displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Mother Prado González, the monastery’s superior, called the destruction an “ecological, human, and social tragedy,” asking for prayers for firefighters and security forces. Expressing her gratitude to the sisters of the Convent of Saint Ildefonso for receiving them, Mother González said she and her community were “experiencing true communion with the sisters and feel very supported.” The Diocese of Ávila is actively coordinating relief efforts, opening its seminary and retreat center to accommodate evacuees while local priests remain alongside displaced parishioners in emergency shelters.

The Church of the Sacred Heart, South Plainfield, hosted a charity concert on June 27 that raised more than $6,000 to support the Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation, providing enough funding to cover the cost of delivering six babies at the Catholic maternity hospital in the Holy Land.

More than 100 people attended the concert, titled Songs of Hope, which brought together more than 20 professionally trained musicians, including seven parish music directors from the Diocese of Metuchen and neighboring dioceses. The evening featured solo performances and a choral presentation centered on the Rosary, including 10 musical settings of the Ave Maria.

The benefit was organized by parishioner G. Bjorn “Gib” Delacruz, a Knight of the Order of Malta, who sought to respond to the growing needs of families in the Holy Land. With the support of pastor Father Edmund Luciano, the

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time (A) This Sunday’s Gospel reading from St. Matthew highlights both St. Peter’s increasing faith and Jesus’ subsequent commissioning of him to be the sure visible foundation of unity of the Christian community. Guided by divine inspiration, Peter’s faith had developed rapidly from being so weak that he almost drowned while walking toward Jesus on the sea to the point where his faith-filled insight was strong enough for him to proclaim boldly that Jesus was the Messiah, the Son of the Living God. Jesus uses Peter’s strident faith as the firm foundation upon which to build his church community. It is important that we always keep these two Gospel events together– in the story of Peter’s attempt to walk toward Jesus across the sea, we see the depth of his enthusiastic love for the Lord. In this Sunday’s Gospel story, we see Peter’s great faith. Both will be necessary for Peter in his mission as the pillar of the Christian community.

The Gospel reading opens with Jesus having gone to Caesarea Philippi, a town in the Northern section of Palestine at the foot of Mount Hermon. This actually marked the beginning of his journey toward Jerusalem and the cross. Jesus begins a conversation with his disciples, asking them who the crowds think he is.

Their answers betray a diversity of viewpoints: some say he is John the Baptizer (like Herod, many in the crowd saw Jesus as a populist charismatic leader similar to John); others say he is Elijah (recalling the expectation that Elijah was to return before the day of the Lord – see Sirach 48, Malachi 3:23-24); still others see him as Jeremiah (the prophet Jeremiah suffered much rejection and persecution for the message he proclaimed, just as Jesus would).

Taking their conversation to a more personal level, Jesus next asked his disciples who they thought he was. The question gives Peter the opportunity for his confession of faith, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” (Matthew 16:16). By recognizing Jesus as the Messiah (Messiah is the Hebrew term; the Greek-derived translation is “Christ” meaning “the Anointed One”), Peter was acting within the general expectations of Israel, but by recognizing Jesus as the Son of God, Peter dispels any misconceptions about the exact role and significance of the Messiah. In combining these two titles, Peter captured the essence of Jesus’

unique relationship with the Father.

Jesus next commissions Peter to be the rock-solid foundation of his soonto-be-established Christian community.

Significantly, Matthew uses a word for Church which means “the gathered assembly;” Jesus commissions Peter as the strong, unifying pillar of the Lord’s community – his faith and love will be the sturdy support which will hold the community together and keep the “gates of the netherworld” at bay. St. Luke records this commissioning in Jesus’ Last Supper instruction to Peter: “you must strengthen your brothers” (Luke 22:32).

As a symbol of Peter’s authority and stewardship, Jesus confers upon him the “keys of the kingdom of heaven.” In this, Peter is being given responsibility for the proper functioning of the Christian community. He must keep all in good order, having special oversight concerning admission into the kingdom (for example through Baptism, subsequent church discipline, etc.). The “Catechism of the Catholic Church, #553,” tells us “The power of the keys designates authority to govern the house of God, which is the Church.”

Finally, Jesus gives Peter the power to bind and to loose both on earth and in heaven. In rabbinic literature, the power to bind and to loose involved overall leadership/stewardship as well as the power to impose and dispense from obligations; to bind and to loose could also be used in a technical sense to mean excluding someone from the community and granting re-admission.

The “Catechism of the Catholic Church, #553,” offers, “The power to bind and to loose connotes the authority to absolve sins, to pronounce doctrinal judgements, and to make disciplinary decisions in the Church.” Peter is assured that his decisions will be in line with those of heaven as he leads the Christian community.

Peter’s special place in this Christian community is recognized throughout the New Testament. In Catholic tradition, we believe that the special authority and stewardship handed by Christ to Peter continues to be wielded by Peter’s successors, the Bishops of Rome (the Popes).

Each Pope, thus, is commissioned to be the strong support who upholds, defends, and unifies the Church.

As the Second Vatican Council taught in its “Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, #23,” The Roman Pontiff, “as the successor of Peter, is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity … of the whole company of the faithful.” We pray in the words of the Roman Missal that Pope Leo XIV in our day “may confirm his brethren and that the whole Church may be in communion with him in the bond of unity, peace, and love so that … all may know the truth and attain eternal life.”

By OSV News Father Matt Settle, pastor of the linked parishes of St. John and St. Mary in Menasha, was not in town when an EF-3, 1-mile-wide tornado hit at midday on July 27. “I rushed back,” he said, and what he found was “beyond any description.” The tornado, with winds of 146 mph, traveled on the ground for 20 minutes, cutting a swath of 12.5 miles, over three cities and one village. Menasha, population 18,000, was hardest hit. Houses and businesses were destroyed, lifted off foundations and tossed into other buildings. Few trees remain and those are damaged. Cars were flipped,

sometimes with people inside. Snowplows were needed to clear some streets. Yet only 68 people were reported injured, and “nobody was killed,” Father Settle said.

“In all that destruction, that’s an absolute miracle.” St. Mary/ St. John is setting up a long-term parish response team for the weeks and months ahead for its people. In the meantime, people have stepped up. A temporary emergency volunteer coordination center had 2,000 on each of its first two days sign up to go into the damaged areas. Aid is pouring in from not only the area, but around the country.

Timothy John Reilly, 80, of Downingtown, passed away on Thursday, July 23, at his home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Margaret Cunningham Reilly, sharing 55 years of marriage.

Born in Newport News, Va., on Aug. 22, 1945, he was the son of the late John T. and Marie Shertz Reilly. Tim graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School with the class of 1964. He was a proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Tim went on to have a successful career as a computer programmer working for several companies. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, target shooting, gardening and making Sunday breakfast. He excelled at playing chess and enjoyed solving Sudoku puzzles.

Surviving in addition to his wife Margaret is his son Brother Patrick Reilly of Boston, Ma., his daughter Shannon Reilly Walls, wife of Jim, of West Chester, Pa.; grandchildren Hadleigh and Frances; and his sister Eileen Haneiko, wife of Richard, and sister-in-law Carol Reilly, wife of Tim’s late brother Sean M. Reilly, and many nieces and nephews.

25 Years of Service Marking 25 years of service to the St. Augustine of Canterbury community, the Kendall Park parish’s Columbiettes Auxiliary 6345 celebrated their anniversary with a June 7 Mass in the church followed by a luncheon at La Taverna restaurant in Dayton.

The Columbiettes organization is a national network of Catholic women who share the same values – growing their faith and serving their communities – while assisting the work of their local Knights of Columbus councils. Their patronesses are the Blessed Virgin Mary,

St. Theresa of the Little Flower and St. Joan of Arc. The organization was created in 1939 by Cardinal J. Francis McIntyre, who conceived an idea of a ladies’ organization to work with the Knights of Columbus. The Honorable Margaret Mary J. Mangan, an attorney who was the second woman to sit as a judge on the New York State Supreme Court, was elected the first president of the Supreme Council Columbiettes.

Application forms are available on the school’s website and at your child’s school. Applications can be submitted at any time during the school year. If a household member becomes unemployed or the household size or income changes during the school year, parents are encouraged to contact the school so that all children receive the proper benefits. For the school officials to determine eligibility, the household must provide the following information listed on the application: names of all household members; household income received by each household member; type of income; frequency of income such as weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly; and the signature and last four digits of the social security number of an adult household member certifying that the information provided is correct. The information provided by parents on the application will be kept confidential and will be used only for determining eligibility.

Foster children, Head Start enrollees, homeless, migrant and runaway children, as defined in 7 CFR 245.2, are categorically eligible for free meals or free milk. Households receiving assistance under NJ SNAP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Medicaid for their children will be notified of their eligibility for free benefits unless the household notifies the school that it chooses to decline benefits. Households receiving assistance under NJ SNAP or TANF should only submit an application if they are not notified of their eligibility by a specified date determined by the school. Households with children that are certified participants in SNAP or TANF may submit school meal applications for their children using the abbreviated information as indicated on the school meal application and instructions. WIC participants may also be eligible for free and reduced price meals. Parents/guardians should contact their child’s school for more information.

The school will advise parents of their child’s eligibility within 10 working days of receipt of the application. Any parent dissatisfied with the eligibility determination may contact the school to request an informal conference or may appeal the decision by requesting a formal hearing.

For up to 30 operating days into the new school year (or until a new eligibility determination is made, whichever comes first) an individual child who was determined as free or reduced price eligible during the previous year will continue with this determination. When children move to a new LEA, either at the beginning of the new school year or during the summer months, the new LEA is encouraged to use the former LEA’s eligibility determination from the previous school year and carryover the child’s eligibility status. Once determinations Form #276 are completed, school officials are required to verify three percent of the approved School Meals and Summer June 2026 EBT Applications on file. For additional information, contact your child’s school.

The Council also hosted two blood drives and collected nearly 100 units of blood to assist in replenishing the blood supply in our area.

Helping people invite Christ into their lives

By Dr. Pierre-Alain Giffard Special Contributor Evangelization is not primarily about doctrine or programs – it is about helping people encounter a living Person: Jesus Christ. To evangelize is to help others want Christ in their lives, not out of obligation or fear, but out of love, longing, and trust. It is to awaken in hearts the desire to walk daily with Him, to let Him be their holy and everyday companion, their friend and Saviour.

This is the heart of the Gospel: God seeks intimacy with each soul. From the very first pages of Scripture, we see a God who walks with humanity in the garden (Genesis 3:8), and in the fullness of time, becomes one of us (John 1:14), not just to save us, but to dwell with us.

Evangelization, then, is inviting people into that companionship – a communion of love that changes everything.

Christ’s Invitation: Come and See In the Gospels, Jesus’ invitation is simple yet profound: “Come and see” (John 1:39). He does not begin with a demand but with an invitation to relationship. The evangelizer’s first task is to reflect that same tenderness, offering Christ as a Friend to encounter. Jesus does not wait for people to be worthy, but offers Himself to all.

Evangelization must reflect this divine generosity. Our mission is to help people realize they are already greatly desired by God and to open the door of their hearts to His presence and His friendship. Jesus does not impose Himself; He knocks (Revelation 3:20).

But someone must help others hear that knock. That is the evangelizer’s role.

Healing Desire: From Knowing About to Loving In a world marked by distraction and spiritual amnesia, many people no longer know what they long for. Their hearts are restless, but they cannot name the hunger. Evangelization, rooted in love and prayer, reveals that the deepest longing of the human heart is not for success or comfort, but for communion with Christ.

When we witness to the love of Christ in our lives, especially through our peace, forgiveness, and trust in trials, we awaken curiosity in others. They begin to wonder: “What if this Jesus is real? What if I could be loved like that too?” This is evangelization – helping people move from knowing about Christ to wanting Him. Evangelization Is Spiritual Accompaniment Helping people desire Christ also means walking with them patiently.

The Church calls this accompaniment: a long-term commitment to journeying with others in their struggles and questions. Pope Francis describes this in Evangelii Gaudium: “Evangelization consists mostly of patience and disregard for constraints of time” (§24).

To accompany someone spiritually is to be a witness to the patience and mercy of Christ. It is to be a living icon of His companionship, helping others realize that holiness is not about perfection but about surrender.

Christ as Companion: Both Holy and Everyday One of the greatest misunderstandings in modern culture is the separation between the sacred and the ordinary.

Evangelization reclaims the truth that

Jesus is not only Lord of the sanctuary but of the kitchen, the commute, and the workplace. He wants to be our companion in all things – not just in our prayers, but in our daily lives.

To evangelize is to help others see that there is no part of their day or heart that Jesus does not care about. Ultimately, the goal is not to make Jesus part of our life, but to help Him become our life.

A Mission of Love Evangelization must always be rooted in love – God’s love for us and our love for others. This is the Gospel we are called to share: a love that does not

Saint Peter’s Family Health Center Named Community Organization of the Year by Middlesex County Regional Chamber of Commerce

Located on How Lane in New Brunswick, Saint Peter’s Family Health Center provides coordinated healthcare services for adults, children, and women, with a focus on increasing access to high quality care for all patients including the underserved and vulnerable populations.

In 2025, the Center recorded nearly 84,000 patient visits and recently completed a major expansion project designed to support up to 100,000 visits annually. The expansion added new clinical space and enhanced patient resources to better meet

A key component of the Family Health Center is The Market at Saint Peter’s, a client-choice food-by-prescription program that helps eligible patients access nutritious foods as part of their care plan. The Market was created to address food insecurity, which can significantly affect chronic disease management, overall wellness, and quality of life. The program currently serves approximately 80 patients each month and provides access to fresh produce, nonperishable food items, and essential personal care items, including diapers, wipes, baby care supplies, and hygiene products.

The organization has also implemented innovative screening tools to help identify patients who may benefit from additional assistance and support services.

The Chamber recognition came as Saint Peter’s Family Health Center prepared to host its Back to School and Back to Work event August 6. Participants at the event had the opportunity to learn more about the Family Health Center’s array of services in addition to connecting with local resources and social services.

An added benefit was the opportunity to speak with onsite representatives about current job openings at Saint Peter’s and preparing for a new job. The event offered something for all ages and included activities for kids, plus giveaways such as school supplies and backpacks.

ticipated as a sub-investigator in clinical drug trials involving myasthenia gravis, a chronic autoimmune disorder where the immune system blocks communication between nerves and muscles. She has published research on sarcoid neuropathy, neurosarcoidosis, trigeminal neuralgia, and peripheral neuropathy.

Her clinical interests include stroke; migraines; peripheral neuropathy; dementia; and epilepsy, which includes poststroke epilepsy psychogenic seizures and women’s issues in epilepsy. She is recognized for building strong relationships with her patients and helping them achieve the best possible quality of life through compassionate, individualized care.

Diáconos afirman que el apoyo de la familia y el clero desempeña un papel decisivo a la hora de responder al llamado vocacional Por Kurt Jensen, OSV News El diácono Sam Puleo Jr., quien presta servicio en la parroquia de San Francisco de Asís en Seffner, Florida, aprendió a apoyarse en su fe cuando su hijo Roman falleció de cáncer el día que cumplía 26 años, en 2022.

“Es algo con lo que simplemente tienes que lidiar”, declaró el diácono Puleo, de 61 años, a OSV News. Él ha conservado el consejo que le dio un sacerdote para sobrellevar esto: “Amar tu fe es lo que realmente marca la diferencia”.

Ese amor acompañó su camino hacia el diaconado permanente. El diácono Puleo fue ordenado el pasado mes de octubre para la Diócesis de St. Petersburg, la cual ordena nuevos diáconos cada dos años. ¿Qué impulsa a los hombres a escuchar y seguir la llamada de Jesucristo para convertirse en diáconos permanentes en 2026? Una encuesta de 2025 realizada por el Centro de Investigación Aplicada para el Apostolado de la Universidad de Georgetown (CARA, por sus siglas en inglés) --organismo que lleva a cabo estudios de ciencias sociales para y sobre la Iglesia Católica-- estimó que en 2024 había 13.864 diáconos permanentes en el ministerio activo. Desde 2011, su número ha promediado los 19.184, oscilando entre 16.966 y 20.888.

Su labor más preciada, señaló el diácono Puleo, es “difundir el mensaje del Evangelio”. La parroquia de San Francisco de Asís cuenta con unos 1.400 miembros, una cifra que él considera ideal. “No es tan grande como para perderse entre la multitud. Es una comunidad humilde”.

El diácono Jim Grevenites, presidente del comité ejecutivo de la Asociación Nacional de Directores de Diaconado, director de personal diaconal de la Diócesis de St. Petersburg y diácono desde hace 26 años, ha supervisado recientemente su novena promoción de nuevos diáconos.

Dice que busca el momento “en el que vemos cómo se desarrolla el corazón del diácono” y “sabes que pueden adaptarse a cualquier circunstancia y ser una presencia de Cristo”.

Y también requiere un cambio de perspectiva, añadió. “No debería haber mucha resistencia a ello”.

Con ello se refiere a la “obediencia a los obispos”, un concepto que, en su opinión, resulta más difícil de asimilar para hombres acostumbrados a ser sus

propios jefes. “Los hemos visto de todo tipo, provenientes de muy diversos ámbitos de vida”.

El diácono Sal Heredia, de 50 años y ordenado el 16 de mayo, presta servicio en la parroquia de San Juan Vianney en San José, California. A medida que se acerca su jubilación tras casi 25 años en el Departamento de Libertad Condicional del condado de Santa Clara, recuerda que otros siempre percibieron en él cualidades de liderazgo.

“Estaba sentado en el último banco, cuando alguien me dio una palmada en el hombro. Y, de repente, ya estaba en el primer banco”, iniciando así un camino de 15 años hacia el diaconado, que incluyó cinco años de formación que se solaparon con tres años en el Instituto para el Liderazgo en el Ministerio de la Diócesis de San José. Estaba sinceramente comprometido”.

Su párroco, el padre Steve Brown, ejerció una gran influencia en él, animándolo cada seis meses a “simplemente emprender los años de discernimiento y ver qué pasaba después”.

Sus hijos siempre han participado activamente en la parroquia; de hecho, su hijo Marco --de 21 años y el segundo de sus hijos--, recién graduado de la Universidad de California en Davis, ingresará en el Seminario Mount Angel en St. Benedict, Oregón, para iniciar su camino hacia el sacerdocio.

El diácono Ángel Velásquez, de 43 años, natural de Venezuela e inmigrante

desde 2014, se encuentra en la parroquia de San Francisco de Sales en Abingdon, Maryland, tras su ordenación el 9 de mayo. El propietario de Maryland Appliances and Mattresses tiene dos hijos con Jaisa, su esposa desde hace 12 años. Para él, lo mejor del diaconado “es acompañar a los feligreses en todas las etapas de la vida --nacimientos, bodas, Misas fúnebres-- para recordarles que ‘la Iglesia siempre está presente’”.

El diácono Velásquez sintió la llamada por primera vez en 2015, durante una conversación con otro diácono. “No puedo ni explicarlo. Mucha gente me pregunta: ‘¿Qué te hace pensar que este es el momento adecuado?’. Simplemente quise seguirlo, responder al llamad”.

“Dios nos da la gracia para cumplir con todos estos ministerios”, reflexionó.

“El Señor nos da el poder para hacerlo si le ofrecemos su gracia”.

Y a cualquiera que esté considerando el diaconado, le aconseja: “Dedica algo de tiempo a la oración”.

players and families, and he is forever grateful to the administration for giving him an opportunity in his 20s and believing in him.

His decision to move on was twofold: He has a much shorter commute to Immaculata, and he wanted a fresh challenge of building a program under an evolving athletic department with facilities that he says are “growing by the day.”

It was also important for Shellhammer, who attended St. Peter the Apostle High School in New Brunswick (now closed), to work at another Catholic school.

“I just think the overall infrastructure – the weight room, the film room is a college film room – there’s more there that can attract some of the top talent in the area to eventually compete with the area’s top teams,” he said. “My goals are set high that I see this happening (having a premier basketball team) within three to four years.”

Immaculata finished with an 11-15 record last season under Jeff Sullivan and will have a new look next winter with only three core returners. Top scorers have either graduated or transferred.

Immaculata and Mount Saint Mary compete in different divisions of the Skyland Conference.

“I think that’s good as a new coach to kind of have a new team to lay the foundation of what we want to do,” Shellhammer said. “I might learn a little bit more and have to adapt.”

Shellhammer is excited to guide Immaculata back to success that it has enjoyed in the past. He brings a wealth of experience as he is also the director of the NJ Panthers AAU boys’ team. And prior to his run at Mount Saint Mary, he was an assistant under top coaches at Rutgers Prep.

“We have a very strong freshman class this year,” he said. “We’re going to be fairly young, but I do see kind of the long run where the goal is to not rebuild but build this program back up. A new challenge, and every program I’ve worked with, with the exception of Rutgers Prep, has been that kind of challenge.”

Shellhammer coached the team in its summer league for six games, and he has since been running practices in the gym a handful of times per week. They practiced outside in early August because the gym was under construction, which is another exciting development.

The summer recess period ends Sept.

1, at which point the team will be conditioning and lifting weights until practices resume in late November. The 2026-27 season gets underway in December.

“We still have a lot of work to do with the team,” Shellhammer said. “In terms of the whole athletic administration, Tom Gambino is a Hall of Famer, state championship baseball coach as the AD. I look forward to learning from him and his experience.”

Shellhammer says he is open to being an assistant in another sport at Immaculata if the opportunity arises. For now, he is 100 percent focused on developing a passionate girls basketball program.

“We want to mimic a college basketball program as much as you can while maintaining that high school, student-athlete environment,” he said.

And sometimes, the right decision evokes difficult emotions.

Ryan Shellhammer faced that reality this summer when he accepted the job as head girls’ basketball coach at Immaculata High School and, in the process, left Mount Saint Mary Academy – another school in the Diocese where he spent the past 13 years.

“To leave that group that was special, they were talented, they were balanced, they had great personalities … that was heartbreaking, to say the least,” he said.

Shellhammer led the Mount Saint Mary’s basketball program to 170 wins and four division championships. He also coached the tennis and golf teams.

Zymere Weaver poised to lead St. Thomas Aquinas football to big season

ans of the St. Thomas Aquinas High School Edison, football team, can expect to see a bigger, faster and even taller version of Zymere Weaver this season.

The star quarterback stands at 6-foot-4 and weighs 190 pounds entering his junior year, and that’s only one reason why he’s drawing interest from premier college programs.

“I think being a three-sport athlete and playing quarterback, that’s kind of unheard of now,” head coach Shamir Bearfield said. “You don’t really hear about too many kids being multi-sport athletes and being recruited as a Division I athlete. A lot of kids now are starting to just focus on one sport and they’re trying to get better at that one thing, whereas Zymere wants to be great at everything.”

Weaver burst onto the scene as a top quarterback last fall with the sixth-most passing touchdowns (24) and the seventh-most passing yards (2,236) in New Jersey. He later shined on the basketball court as a point guard and ran excellent times in track and field.

“It helps you get better, I feel like, just being active,” Weaver said. “Being an athlete, it just helps me out.”

The Brick Township native started out playing Pop Warner in Lakewood at age five and has been a quarterback since he was seven. He heard from coaches in eighth grade that he had the potential to play college football. But rather than

carry a big head into high school, he demonstrated as a freshman at St. Thomas Aquinas that he’s willing to put in the hard work.

The Trojans had a strong quarterback in place at the time, so Weaver learned behind the scenes and quarterbacked the JV team. He then committed himself to studying game film as a sophomore. That made for a smooth transition into being the starting quarterback with 2,526 total yards and only three interceptions in 11 games.

“I’m actually grateful for that opportunity,” Weaver said of being a backup as a freshman. “Some people might think I was upset about it, but it was actually a good opportunity.”

Weaver has also become more of a vocal leader as St. Thomas Aquinas aims to improve its 5-6 record from last year with a deeper team in Bearfield’s second year at the helm.

“A lot of times after practice, we come together in a huddle and we talk about things that went well and things that didn’t go so well,” Bearfield said. “(Weaver) always has at least a few things to say.

Whether if we felt like we had a good day or we had a day that wasn’t so great, he’s always able to find the positives and he’s able to motivate and push the guys to be a better version of themselves.”

Weaver received his first Division I offer from Temple University in April and expects his recruiting to pick up in

September.

With St. Thomas Aquinas’ season set to get underway Aug. 29 at Sheepshead Bay High School in Brooklyn, he has been targeting a specific area of improvement.

“I’m trying to focus better on staying in the pocket and being able to make the play downfield,” Weaver said. “Be more composed in the pocket and not be so antsy.”

It’s the gift and the curse with being so athletic. The Trojans don’t want to take away Weaver’s dual-threat capabilities, but there’s also a learning curve with young quarterbacks in being smart with their feet and when they decide to scramble.

Weaver has been working in that regard with Izjaier Sanders, who is the quarterbacks’ coach and was also promoted to offensive coordinator this season.

“That’s something that we’ve been pushing Zymere to do all this offseason, especially throughout the summer,” Bearfield said. “The good thing about 7-on-7 (drills), you have no choice but to stay in the pocket. You can’t run. He definitely took that step forward in being able to analyze the defense pre-snap, and then understand, ‘What reads am I getting post-snap?’ And then based on our offensive rules, the defense kind of dictates where he can throw. He’s been doing really well.”

Weaver’s top returning receiver is senior Tristan Bester. Other targets include senior Aaron Crooms, junior Dillon

Adams, senior Austin Tingle, sophomore Chris Lawal and sophomore Elijah Derilus.

At running back, St. Thomas Aquinas will feature junior Zaire Burgess, a transfer from St. Joe’s Montvale, and junior Aiden Morse. Senior Jha’Meer Quinn-Haskins is another transfer from Hudson Catholic who will be eligible to play after sitting three games.

On defense, the team’s top returning tackler is senior middle linebacker Jaylen Frias. Senior outside linebacker Dante Jennings is another player to watch.

“We tried to look at ways where we can take that step forward within the program,” Bearfield said. “Last year we kind of put a lot on our players, which wasn’t a bad thing, but I think there were certain ways that we could have done a little bit better in helping our guys be able to line up and play a little bit faster. So we kind of shortened down our calls a little bit. … Guys are able to line up, able to go out and just ball out without having to think too much.”

Weaver is poised to lead St. Thomas Aquinas to a breakout season, which in turn can help his future prospects.

He dreams of playing in the NFL one day as a trailblazer for his family – namely his mother, his aunt, his grandmother and his younger cousin.

“I live with all girls, so it would mean the world to me if I could provide for them at the next level,” Weaver said.

good idea would depend on the specifics of the particular circumstances.

In general, the Catholic Church is interested in promoting the unity of all Christians, and part of this is recognizing what all Christians have in common. This is why non-Catholic Christians who wish to become Catholic are not technically said to be “converting” to Catholicism, but are rather “entering into full communion.” And non-Catholic Christians who have already been baptized with water and a formula invoking the Trinity are not “re-baptized” upon becoming Catholic, because the Catholic Church recognizes the fundamental validity of all truly Christian baptisms.

In a similar vein, there is nothing to prohibit a Catholic from praying together with non-Catholic Christians in terms that are mutually acceptable to both sides.

For example, there certainly wouldn’t be a problem with a Catholic and a Protestant saying the “Our Father” or a grace before meals together. It also wouldn’t be an issue for a Catholic to, for example, attend the religious wedding service of two non-Catholics at a Protestant church.

There are some limits to prayer in common, however. Essentially, Catholics cannot pray in any way that would deny a truth of the Catholic faith. For instance, a Catholic should not participate in a Protestant “communion service,” since non-Catholic teachings on the meaning of holy Communion are different from our Catholic understanding of the Eucharist, and a Catholic “receiving Communion” in a Protestant service would be a tacit denial of our doctrine of the Real Presence.

With respect to your specific question, if you were approaching the praise and worship night as a sort of devotional concert experience, to me this doesn’t seem like this would be a problem.

if the praise and worship night was more along the lines of a Sunday service or other occasion where the church’s leadership was intending to teach the Christian faith according to its own understanding.

Even here, this might not present much of a concern for you if you are a mature adult who is well formed in your own Catholic faith. But as a matter of honest personal discernment, if for whatever reason you feel that you are not as well-catechized as you ought to be, you might not want to put yourself in a situation where you are going to become confused about what the Catholic Church teaches or what we all must believe as Catholics. Likewise, I would be hesitant to let a minor child or teenage Catholic attend a non-Catholic praise and worship night by themselves, as they are still growing in their Catholic faith and are therefore much more impressionable.

Since many non-denominational Christian churches in the United States tend to lean towards an Evangelical Protestant spirituality – and since many if not most Evangelicals share with Catholics a lively sense of the need to cling to Christ and shun the forces of evil – I think it’s highly unlikely that attending an Evangelical praise and worship night would, as you put it, “open a door to the devil.” Although in theory, this might be more of a real concern if the non-denominational church in question was not in an Evangelical or conservative mainline Protestant tradition, but instead had some New Age leanings.

‘American Martyr’: An Oklahoma priest’s unlikely bond with persecuted Mayans in war-torn Guatemala

Note: “American Martyr: The Stanley Rother Story” comes to theaters courtesy of Fathom Entertainment, in English for two nights, August 25–26, and in Spanish for one night, August 27. This article is based on screening an almost-finished cut of the film.

It’s a wonder that Blessed Stanley Rother ever became a priest in the first place. A farm boy from a Catholic enclave in rural Okarche, Oklahoma, Stanley had a sturdy work ethic and a resilient spirit as well as deep piety. He was confident in his calling, but he wasn’t a scholar and he hadn’t studied Latin, which was still de rigueur in those days on the eve of Vatican II. After years of struggling for passing grades at Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, Texas, he was asked to leave the formation program.

What did Bishop Victor Reed see in this unpromising student that moved him to go to bat for the young man? How did Stanley wind up attending another seminary, Mount St. Mary’s in Maryland, completing his studies and receiving ordination in 1963? Whatever other factors played a role, in view of what followed, it is not hard to discern the hand of God in Stanley’s ordination during the Council that would play a decisive role in the shape of his future life as well as his 1981 martyr’s death in Guatemala and the devotion that has grown around him.

As with most martyrs, while Fr. Stan may be remembered first of all for how he died, what matters most is how he lived. “American Martyr: The Stanley Rother Story” is concerned with what matters most.

We expect a documentary like this to offer a blend of archival video and still photography, location shooting, dramatized recreation video, voiceover narration–provided here by Martin Sheen–and

interviews with knowledgeable sources.

In this case, sources include Sister Marita Rother, ASC, Stan’s sister; biographer María Ruiz Scaperlanda, who served on the historical commission gathering data for Stan’s cause for sainthood; and Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City.

“American Martyr” rises above expectations in moments of unexpected poignance. A cousin in Okarche chokes up relating the last time he talked to Fr. Stan during a brief return to the U.S. after learning that his name was on a government hit list. Regarding Stan’s intent to return to celebrate Holy Week with his Mayan parishioners, his cousin recalls him saying, “You have your family, and I have my family.” Another such moment comes with the confession of a middle-aged Guatemalan man who was a teenaged catechist the night gunmen came to the rectory looking for Fr. Stan.

To this day, he admits, he feels like Judas Iscariot for leading the assassins to their sleeping victim.

Director Derek Watson, founder of Oklahoma-based Lampstand Story Co., previously directed a related documentary short, “An Ordinary Martyr: The Life and Death of Blessed Stanley Rother,” which premiered at the 2017 beatification. The care that Watson and director of photography Michael Zurbach put into crafting their visual approach goes beyond most faith-based documentaries.

Well-composed recreation shots of Stan as a child or a young man in Okarche are bathed with a nostalgic, golden glow.

Archival photographs are sometimes presented in direct, full-frame view, often with a Ken Burns–style slow dolly; other times, they are visualized in a diegetic context: for example, placed on a desk amid other paraphernalia, as if someone had just been looking at them. During Stan’s seminary schooling, the photos are set amid well-worn textbooks; when he arrives in Guatemala, the backgrounds

include colorful local textiles.

What brought an Oklahoma priest to Guatemala? In the wake of the Second Vatican Council, the Holy See called on the dioceses of North America to come to the aid of Catholics in Latin America.

Fr. Stan joined a mission team organized by the dioceses of Oklahoma City and Tulsa to the remote Guatemalan town of Santiago Atitlán, a poor community on a volcanic lake. The town was populated largely by indigenous Maya; some spoke Spanish as a second language; others spoke only the Tz’utujil language.

Fr. Stan’s working-class background as well as his priestly ministry made him a valuable servant to the Tz’utujil people. Using church funds, he created a farming co-op where laborers could work for themselves instead of living in feudal dependence on landowners.

He helped build up infrastructure in the region, including housing, an irrigation system, and medical services. He trained Mayan catechists who could teach people in Tz’utujil; eventually he learned the language well enough to say Mass and preach in it, ultimately even becoming a driving force in translating the New Testament into Tz’utujil–quite a feat for the former seminarian who struggled with Latin.

Fr. Stan also established a radio station that became an important source of news as well as catechesis–a development that “American Martyr” connects to growing hostility from the repressive military government, whose forces finally made their way to the isolated community. Backed by the U.S. in its proxy war with the Soviet Union, and opposed by leftist guerrillas, the government carried out a program of genocide against the Maya, from whom, they alleged, rebel groups recruited.

In his efforts to defend his people from a U.S.-backed Latin American military government, leading eventually to

his martyrdom, Fr. Stan becomes something of a low-key, parochial counterpart to El Salvador’s St. Óscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador. Romero had much more pastoral responsibility and a formidable soapbox; he was also far more outspoken and direct in condemning the government’s atrocities and appealing directly for an end to violence. A parish priest of a tiny rural community, Fr. Stan hoped that he and his people would be overlooked as much as possible … and, for a long time, they were.

When military intimidation came to Santiago Atitlán, and people in the area started disappearing and being tortured or killed, Fr. Stan opposed the military occupation of the town, and still more their presence on his co-op farm. He also spoke out in defense of the rights and the dignity of his parishioners and in opposition to violence. With his status as an American came some protection, but he wasn’t untouchable, and he knew it.

“American Martyr” doesn’t overlook the symbolism of Fr. Stan returning from his brief trip to the U.S. to Guatemala to celebrate Holy Week. Armfuls of palm branches clutched by Mayan Catholics in a Palm Sunday celebration highlight the connection between Jesus’ Passion and that of the Oklahoman priest.

He wouldn’t die that week, or that month; indeed, he dared to hope that he would be allowed to live and continue to serve his community. But his commitment to be present to his people, and to offer them what strength and encouragement he could by his presence, was a calling he was willing to die for.

Fr. Stan’s personality is sufficiently vivid in “American Martyr” that it’s ultimately a surprise to realize that we have never so much as heard his voice–and that the man is glimpsed in motion in no more than, I believe, two or three brief clips of silent archival video (perhaps 8mm film): one capturing him processing apparently on the day of his ordination; another finding him celebrating that last Palm Sunday in 1981. An echo of his voice is heard in readings from his letters. There is apparently a wealth of audio of Fr. Stan’s voice–in Guatemala, from Stan’s radio broadcasts, probably all in Tz’utujil or Spanish.

Who he was, ultimately, is his gift to the people of Santiago Atitlán. His challenge to us, perhaps, is this: How are we called to give ourselves to others? What price are we willing to pay?

“Minions & Monsters” (Universal) OSV NEWS – Set primarily in the Hollywood of the 1920s, this delightful animated comedy, directed and co-written by Pierre Coffin, is at once a paean to and a satire of early Tinseltown. Intent on making a horror movie featuring monsters, two of the Twinkie-like creatures of the title (their inspired gibberish language voiced by Coffin) conjure up a disappointingly diminutive and unterrifying example of the species (voice of Trey Parker). But they’re relieved when their new friend promises to guide them to the lair of some more suitable ogres. Other members of the traveling tribe to which the duo belong, meanwhile, continue their search for an evil master they can serve and settle on a nerdy alien robot (voice of Jesse Eisenberg) whose threats to lay waste to Earth seem to be mere bluster. Narrated by a present-day museum docent (voice of Allison Janney), the film celebrates creativity, friendship and perseverance, though older kids and adults may be having too much fun to notice. Comic mayhem, occult-themed nonsense, some anatomical humor, a single crass term. The OSV News classification is A-I – general patronage. The Motion Picture Association rating is PG – parental guidance suggested. Some material may not be suitable for children.
