Catholic faith has a role to play in college, career choice

H

igh school seniors around the Diocese of Trenton are in the final stretch of selecting the college of their choice, and for some, Catholic colleges and universities top the list for continuing their education.

At the same time, college seniors from the Diocese are preparing to graduate from Catholic institutions, reflecting on their college experience and where their futures may lead.

Though these two groups of students are on different tracks, a common trait they do share is a desire to have their Catholic faith play an integral role. “[Faith] is something I really wanted to study in college,” said Veronica McCarthy, 21, a senior at The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., who attended Red Bank Catholic High School. “I enjoyed learning about my faith, and I wanted to bring that into my secondary education and further that in my college career.

“Only when I got to CUA did I really realize how important that aspect was,” said McCarthy of St. Thomas More Parish, Manalapan.

As a politics major with a double minor in Catholic theology and Islamic studies, McCarthy enjoys studying how religion and politics intersect, she said. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in global ethics so she can advocate for Christians and other minority groups in the Middle East after she graduates. She credits CUA with helping her find the direction she wants to pursue in her career through the school’s spiritual teachings.

McCarthy’s faith-based values were echoed across different age groups as those choosing colleges and those looking to leave higher education institutions discussed how Catholicism has influenced their school decisions.

A Sense of Community For Emanuel Lazzaro, a senior in Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, selecting a Catholic institution of higher learning was a natural fit.

“I am considering a Catholic college because I want my university life to be a continuation of Christian Brothers Academy,” he said.

“The sense of community that I have been exposed to in high school should be a crucial aspect of my life lived away from home. I have discovered that the Catholic universities that I am considering place that same emphasis on being connected with all people that I have already taken a liking to.”

Lazzaro, who was accepted to Notre Dame University, South Bend, Ind., and plans on studying biology, credits the sense of community he experienced in the Catholic schools he has so far visited as one reason he felt drawn to these schools.

A student who understands the sense of Catholic campus community is senior Brooke Harvey, a 22-year-old nursing major in Neumann University, Aston, Pa. Harvey has attended Catholic schools her entire life, including Holy Cross Academy, Delran.

“A Catholic school is a magnet for kind people,” said Harvey of St. Joan of Arc Parish, Marlton, crediting the nurturing environment of Catholic schools, specifically the caring staff.

For example, as a member of the Neumann University women’s soccer team, she feels her coach, Lauren Sciocchetti, has helped her spiritually through her journey.

“She was always the first person I would go to, to help me out in a situation where I felt I couldn’t handle [stress] on my own,” Harvey said.

In addition, Harvey, who is part of the university’s Student Nurse Association, often receives emails from the university’s career development office about open nursing positions in the area.

“I have gotten them since about sophomore year, which is great, so it’s not just for graduating seniors; it’s even for students who are actively in school,” she said.

Helping Hands It’s not just faculty and staff who are focused on giving back, it’s the students, too.

Fellow Neumann University senior Nick Panissidi, 21, plays third base for the school’s baseball team. Along with his teammates, he has performed community service projects during his time at the school such as helping clean Little League fields.

“We go out and have fun while helping others,” said Panissidi of St. Mary of the Lake

Parish, Lakewood, who attended Monsignor Donovan High School, Toms River, now known as Donovan Catholic.

He is also grateful for the university’s academic resource center – which he said he’s found helpful since he has a learning disability – and the athletic facilities off the field.

“Location and the size of the school were definitely two things I looked into,” he said, recalling his college search. “Also, if the school was growing itself, and Neumann is. They just added a few buildings on with the Mirenda Center [for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development], which are very nice facilities.

As an athlete, you’re always looking for a place … so you can click better on the field.”

Faith Decisions When it comes to selecting a school, Paula Pardo, a senior in Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton, said there are many factors that have to be considered in the decision-making process.

“It has to be right – the campus, the price and the programs that are offered have to be a good fit,” she said.

Pardo, who has applied to several public institutions in addition to being accepted at Cabrini University, Radnor, Pa., and CUA, has not made a final decision in the college selection process but admits she has been drawn to Catholic universities.

“I want to remain strong in my faith,” said Pardo, who hopes to study psychology. “I want to do some missionary work, and I know that Catholic schools will provide me the best opportunity and a better program to do that.”

faith has always been there for me to rely on,” said Brencher, who plans to play lacrosse at CUA and study secondary education/ mathematics.

“I knew I wanted to play lacrosse in college because I love to play. When I discovered I could play for my faith, I knew it was the right choice for me,” she offered.

As an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion at Holy Cross, Brencher hopes to continue to be a part of the faith community and be involved in the school’s campus ministry.

Outside Opportunities When surveyed regarding their higher education plans, seniors in Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville, also cited faith and campus ministry opportunities, but other factors concerned them as well, such as scholarships offered, student life, the distance from home and school size as additional considerations when selecting a college or university.

The high-schoolers’ concerns are something college students can relate to. Small class size is one aspect that

The 21-year-old GCU senior said she has had an opportunity for more one-on-one time with her teachers and counselors. For example, she is in the admissions office nearly 25 hours a week, on top of going to classes, to complete her bachelor’s in business administration with a concentration in marketing in only three years.

“I run the provost’s Twitter account for our school,” she said. “I don’t think there are many places that give you that opportunity your third year there.”

When it comes to opportunities, Talian also had many chances to be active in her faith growing up in St. Barnabas Parish, Bayville.

“Service was a big part of what I did,” she said. “There were a lot of food drives, toy drives, and really just reaching out to help those around us, so I was looking for somewhere where I could really continue that aspect.

“As far as faith, I feel like it kind of found me.”

She knew about Georgian Court’s Mercy core values, which include: jus-

SJV is latest school in Diocese to partner with GCU Story by Christina Leslie, Correspondent

xciting new partnerships with Georgian Court University, Lakewood, are enabling students in four Catholic high schools of the Diocese to enrich their educational portfolio. Thanks to a guaranteed admissions program, university-level courses and financial discounts, students enrolled in St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel; Holy Cross Academy, Delran; Donovan Catholic, Toms River, and Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton, will enjoy the benefits of a Catholic college education even before high school graduation.

Beginning this fall, the Ocean County institute of higher learning will guarantee them admission as full-time students providing they graduate from the high school with a diploma, and meet grade point average, Scholastic Aptitude Test/American College Testing benchmarks and other requirements.

This will also enable students to waive undergraduate admission application fees for GCU; be eligible for academic and partnership scholarships up to $19,000 yearly for four years, and utilize options such as personal admissions advisement, college search and financial aid workshops and scholarship awards will be made available to qualified SJVHS students.

munity College since September 2014, known as the ECA, or “Early College Academy.” High school students who take a prescribed series of courses may graduate with both a SJVHS diploma and an associate of arts in social science from Brookdale Community College.

The new agreement with Georgian Court University, which goes into effect this fall, expands educational options for enterprising SJVHS students. With the recognition that the ECA exceeds the minimum core requirements of a high school education, students will be guaranteed admission into GCU as a full-time, matriculated student if they earn a minimum grade point average

of 3.0 on their high school transcript; a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on their college transcript, and satisfy other admissions application requirements.

Those students who choose not to participate in the ECA still are eligible for guaranteed early admission and scholarships through the university’s Catholic School Initiative. The academic, meritbased scholarships are renewable for four years, provided that the student remains full-time and maintains satisfactory academic progress. In addition, students who meet the prescribed criteria will have a guaranteed, reserved place in the bachelor’s degree and master’s degree programs in Georgian Court University.

Donovan Catholic signed a similar agreement with GCU Nov. 30. At the ceremony, Dr. Edward Gere, principal of the Diocese’s only Ocean County Catholic high school, noted, “Access to faith-based education is especially important, given the time that we live in. It’s not everywhere that you can get a Catholic education from preschool through graduate school.”

The agreement between GCU and the high schools addresses not only the academic building blocks essential to form a well-educatied adult, but the spiritual ones, as well. As the only

Catholic institution of higher education located within the Diocese of Trenton, Georgian Court University has a Catholic School Initiative Program in place for area Catholic high schools.

In the case of SJVHS, the high school and Georgian Court have agreed to explore other appropriate ways the institutions might collaborate, including grant funding opportunities, visiting faculty lectures, student collaboration, peer mentoring, internship and cooperative educational events.

“We share a similar mission with GCU, which includes providing an education that will promote systemic change in our world,” declared Sister of St. Joseph Dorothy Payne, president of Trenton Catholic Academy, at the Mercer County school’s Oct. 5 signing ceremony.

About 70 SJVHS students accompanied Joseph Deroba, SJVHS President, to the signing of the agreement Feb. 27 at GCU. Deroba expressed his pleasure at the partnership.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our young people and the only program of its kind in New Jersey,” he said. “It represents the epitome of what two Catholic educational institutions, working together, can accomplish for the welfare of students, families and the Church.”

CUA president acknowledges generosity of Diocese

T

In a March 20 letter to Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., Garvey thanked the people of the Trenton Diocese for its $127,800, which will be used to help financially support the clergy, religious

Bishop O’Connell is also the beneficiary of a CUA education. He earned a licentiate in 1987 and then a doctor of canon law in 1990. He then went on to serve as CUA’s 14th president for 12

years from 19989 until 2010 when he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of the Trenton Diocese by Pope Benedict XVI. “Each diocesan contribution to the National Collection is a strong vote of confidence in our university’s place in the field of higher education, stated Garvey, who recalled how Archbishop Michael Curley, the first archbishop of Washington, once called CUA “the trea-

sured possession of every bishop and diocese in America.”

“Your contribution of $127,800, which is an increase over last year’s gift, affirms this statement and ensures that we continue to fulfill the commitment that your brother bishops made 130 years ago,” said Garvey. Of the 186 CUA students from the Diocese, 84 percent or 157, receive financial aid. The total combined student support totals $3,121,651.

The CUA president spoke of the privilege it was for the nation’s capital to witness the “unprecedented record of three papal visits,” calling it a “powerful reminder of Catholic University’s unique relationship to the Holy See. “We are honored and humbled to train hundreds of America’s priests and religious each year and we are proud to call over 12,000 from around the world – including you – our alumni,” Garvey said.

“As you know, we endeavor to offer our students every opportunity to be inspired by the light of God in all of our disciplines – whether they are studying theology or literature, business or engineering,’” Garvey said. “We encourage them to live with faith, act with purpose and challenge with reason. Your support enables us to prepare the next generation of leadership for our Church and nation.”

Despite successes at Seton Hall, Powell keeps close ties to TCA Story by Rich Fisher, Correspondent

M

yles Powell graduated from Trenton Catholic Academy nearly two years ago, but the memories still burn bright for those he left behind.

They are the kind of memories that illustrate just what kind of guy Powell is.

“What I always remember about Myles is his smile,” said TCA Athletic Director Giancarlo Riotto. “Anytime you see him he has a huge smile on his face.”

“What I remember about Myles, and I still tell him this all the time, is what a big heart he has,” said Tracey Destribats, Director of Advancement for TCA. “Myles is a charmer,” Iron Mikes basketball coach Fred Falchi said. “He’s a good looking kid, he’s got the smile.

When he was in school, he knew what to say and how to say it.”

Sister Dorothy Payne, TCA president, recalls that “Myles is a people person with a very outgoing personality, and he has a strong faith in God.” Hearing Sister Dorothy and Destribats speak of Powell, it should be no surprise he has continued his education at a Catholic institution.

“Myles’ faith plays a big part in his life,” Destribats said. “His parents

instilled great values in him and he has matured so much this past year. One of his favorite Bible quotes is ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ I believe his faith has really helped him grow this past year.”

Powell, who could not be reached for this story, most likely leaned heavily on that faith during a post-graduate season at South Kent School in Connecticut last year. After breaking his foot, Myles gained 45 pounds and his college future at Seton Hall did not seem very promising.

Fast-forward through a grueling year of rehabilitation and extreme training, and things look very bright.

When the Pirates season ended with a controversial NCAA loss to Arkansas on St. Patrick’s Day, the freshman ended up as Seton Hall’s fourth leading scorer with a 10.2 average after making just two starts. He averaged 23.8 points, fourth best on the team, and was third in steals with 30.

Falchi, who coached Powell as a junior and senior after Myles spent two years at Medford Tech, feels his postgrad year may have prepared him for the pressures of big-time college hoops.

“It might have helped him with the adversity in a way,” Falchi said. “After he gained all that weight and then lost the 45 pounds, he really dedicated himself to his body in the weight room. In high school he was very, very good and a lot of times he didn’t have to do the extra things. When you have more talent than most at your level, it makes it a little harder to do the extra things.

“We always talked, and he knew one day he was going to have to do the extra things on a daily basis. Probably after that happened, he realized ‘Now’s the time.’”

Powell’s hard work made him the Pirates’ most valuable reserve. His best scoring effort came in a 72-70 loss at Xavier on Feb. 1 when he scored 26 points on 10-for-16 shooting (6-for-12 from 3-point range). There were other highlights throughout the season.

“I think he had a great year,” Falchi said. “He had a lot of big games. It was a little tough, he came into a lineup with some experienced guys. Maybe he could have done a little more, but they already have a two guard there that kind

of dominated the ball. Down the road I think he really will take off.”

No one at TCA doubts that, as many of the staff members continue to follow the exploits of their former hoop stars, be it Malachi Richardson with the Sacramento Kings, Richmond Aririguzoh at Princeton, Charles Cooke at Dayton or Powell.

“I watched a number of games on television,” Sister Dorothy said. “I think he had a tremendous year and was very proud of him earning so much playing time as a freshman. We have a number of people who keep in touch with him. TCA is truly a family atmosphere and we do keep in touch with our Iron Mike alumni.”

Powell has a special place in Riotto’s heart as he became the Iron Mikes’ first 1,000-point scorer under his watch as AD. “We’re all very proud of Myles and support him 100 percent,” Riotto said.

“I’ve been following his college career very closely and it’s great to see all his hard work in the classroom and on the court pay off. Any chance I have to catch a game on TV or check the game highlights on the Internet, I do. I’m not surprised by the success he is having at Seton Hall. Myles is ready to take his game to the next level.”

“To say we are proud of what Myles accomplished as a freshman would be an understatement,” Destribats said. “Myles had an amazing season. Just take a look at his Twitter account and you can see all the positive statements about his freshman year at Seton Hall. He’s been very impressive, and we can’t wait to watch him play next season.”

Powell has struck up a special relationship with Destribats, whose Facebook page features a plethora of salutes to former Iron Mikes now playing in college.

“That’s what we do at our school,” she said. “It’s not just getting them to college, it’s helping them before, during, and after.”

Destribats was a fixture at Madison Square Garden to watch Powell play in the Big East Tournament, and attended the season opener at Seton Hall. She has kept all his articles, photos and program books since he has been in South Orange and plans on keeping them for him. It is her way of treating him as he treats others.

“This kid has a heart so big,” Destribats said. “I watched him after his Seton Hall games and he would always stop to sign autographs or take photos. He also gave his game sneakers away to a younger fan after a game. That is Myles.

“I was watching one game and Myles helped a player from the opposing team up off the floor after a foul. The announcers commented on it, and said you shouldn’t do that during a game. But I thought to myself ‘Of course Myles would do that.’”

Falchi does not like to smother his players once

they move onward, preferring to let them spread their wings. But he doesn’t completely cut the cord either.

He reunited with Powell during a recent night at TCA to honor Richardson.

“We were always in touch I actually got to a couple games,” the veteran coach said. “I try to leave the kids alone a little bit but every once in a while I text them, tell them ‘That’s a good thing.’ If there’s ever something I thought maybe he needed to know, I just let him know.

“He actually stopped at school a few times. You get pretty close with your guys. Myles I’ve known since third grade, you kind of build relationships. The thing is, if they get too big will they stay in touch with you?”

Falchi’s last comment was said jokingly, but it can happen with some players. Falchi knows it would never be the case with Powell.

“He’s just a really good kid,” the coach said. “He still has a ways to go (in basketball) and I think he thinks he can do more, but he understands he has to wait his turn. What we try to tell all our kids is, he can use basketball to get an education and maybe, who knows, play overseas. But education is most important.”

Destribats texts Powell before and after Seton Hall games, and sometimes just during the course of a day to see how school is going. She realizes Myles puts a lot of pressure on himself, but is there to keep him level headed.

“I told him not every game is going to be a game where he scores 26 points,” she said. “I told him a year ago, he was at South Kent Prep School, and he forgets he is a freshman playing against great players. I always

Educators form lives ready to face the future

By Carol Glatz Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY • Catholic schools and universities play a key role in evangelization and in creating a more humane world built on dialogue and hope, Pope Francis said.

“True educators are just like mothers and fathers who give life open to the future.”

Future generations who are “educated in a Christian way for dialogue, will come out of the classroom motivated to build bridges and, therefore, to find new answers to the many challenges of our times,” he said.

The Pope made his remarks Feb. 9 to members of the Congregation for Catholic Education, who were meeting at the Vatican for their plenary assembly. The Vatican office oversees Churchaffiliated schools and colleges around the world.

Catholic schools and universities are important places for reflecting on and developing new ways to evangelize the world and today’s cultures, the Pope said.

These institutions should serve the Church’s mission of helping humanity grow, build a culture of dialogue and

plant the seeds of hope, he said.

In fact, the Pope said, true educators are just like mothers and fathers who give life open to the future.

In order to do this, educators need to listen to young people, he said, “and we will do this, in particular, with the next Synod of Bishops” dedicated to

youth, faith and vocational discernment in 2018.

“Unfortunately, there are many forms of violence, poverty, exploitation, discrimination, marginalization and restrictive approaches to the fundamental freedoms that create a throwaway culture” in the world today, he said.

That is why Catholic schools “are called to the front lines to practice the grammar of dialogue,” which prepares people to encounter others and appreciate cultural and religious diversity.

“Dialogue, in fact, educates when the person relates with respect, esteem and sincere listening, and is expressed with authenticity without obscuring or softening one’s own identity nourished by evangelical inspiration.”

“Schools and universities are called to teach a method of intellectual dialogue aimed at seeking the truth,” the Pope said.

St. Thomas Aquinas is still the best teacher of this method, “which consists of taking seriously the other – the one speaking – seeking to understand fully his or her reasons and objections in order to be able to respond in a way that is not superficial, but is appropriate,” Pope Francis said. This is the only way “to truly move forward together in understanding the truth.”

Celina intended to major in politics, but her advisor suggested a macroeconomics course, and she soon found herself drawn to other classes in the Busch School of Business and Economics. “I liked solving economics problems,” she says.
