Father’s Ron Perrett and Bernard Flood were ordained priests on 24th July 1962 in Saints Mary & Joseph’s Cathedral Armidale by Most Rev EJ Doody Bishop of Armidale.
Bishop Michael Kennedy had a prior commitment but sent these words of thanks on the day, “I am filled with enormous gratitude for the priestly lives of Fathers Flood and Perrett. Both priests were still in parish appointments when I arrived in the Diocese ten years ago. Whilst they may now be living in so-called ‘retirement’, neither of them has lost their priestly heart and identity as they seek to serve God and the people around them to the best of their ability. As I reflect on their lives and achievements, I am struck by their dedication to be true pastors in the midst of the People of God.
As we reflect on the past 60 years of priestly life for Fathers Bernie and Ron, we can be assured that they have authentically lived the life of a priest as outlined by the Holy Father. May God’s blessing be on them as they continue their priestly journey. Finally, on behalf of myself, my predecessors, the presbyterate and the people of the Diocese I simply say to Fathers Bernie & Ron: THANK YOU!”

On Sunday 24th July, a special Mass and Celebration for their Diamond Jubilee Anniversary was held at St Michael’s Church at Dungowan with clergy and over 100 parishioners from the Diocese present.

The ten years have truly “flown by”. The work as a Deacon has proved to be just so rewarding. First and foremost, I am so privileged to be working with the most amazing, dedicated and giving disciples of Christ in the Diocese, those being our wonderful Catechists who bring the light & love of Christ to so many students attending state schools.
Secondly, to be able to share the joys of so many of our faith filled families as I preside at weddings and now as I claim their babies for Christ through the sacrament of baptism.

With the national launch of its popular Socktober campaign just a month away, Catholic Mission’s director in Armidale is hoping to build on last year’s breakout engagement among schools in the diocese with the formation and fundraising program.
The 13 primary and secondary schools across the diocese joined 350 others around the country in kicking goals and raising over $230,000 for the Good Shepherd Sisters in Thailand, who operate a kindergarten for atrisk children in the capital, Bangkok.
Socktober 2022
Nearly half of the schools in the diocese participated in Socktober, raising over $5,400 online for Catholic Mission’s annual community engagement program, which uses the world game of soccer to engage the heads, hearts, and hands of students from primary and secondary schools in the support of critical mission
“I am so proud of how our schools in Armidale mobilised once more to support to this worthwhile project,” Jacqueline said. “2021 was our first year raising funds through the online Socktober platform, and we witnessed amazing responses from every school community.”
socktober

The generous donations received through the platform made a real difference for the Kindergarten Centre, allowing the Sisters to continue supporting the needs of the children and their families during the Covid pandemic and to provide food and classroom equipment to the children once the school’s doors reopened in November.

More than just raising funds, Socktober builds awareness in students about injustice in the world, inspiring them to reflect on and grow their understanding of the work of Mission. Using a Head, Heart, Hands model, Socktober provides a wealth of resources to teachers to create bespoke, curriculumaligned formation and engagement.
Mission Diocesan Director Jacqueline Toakley was overwhelmed by the response. “Armidale schools have always been so supportive of communities in need around the world through Catholic Mission, but I was blown away by the take-up of our innovative online model of engagement and action,” she said.
“We are hoping every school in the diocese will join us to kick new goals in the 2022 edition of Socktober,” Jacqueline said. “This year, our focus will be on Ethiopia, where malnutrition and food insecurity are a major concern for parents, especially in rural areas.” The campaign will highlight a farm project which aims to provide a sustainable solution to the problem of malnutrition, which contributes to over one third of all child deaths in the country.
You can get in early and register your school’s interest now at socktober.org.au/register. For more information about Socktober or Catholic Mission, call Jacqueline Toakley on (02) 6771 8705.

Expressions of Interest for the Diocese of Armidale world youth day Pilgrimage is Now Open!
During the recent Clergy Assembly the clergy devoted a morning session to Mission and Evangelisation which was facilitated by Debbie Riddell a lay person from the parish of Our Lady of the Southern Cross in Springfield, Brisbane.
During the session members of the clergy shared stories from their own parishes of their current initiatives and obstacles that they have found in regard to evangelisation. All present were heartened to hear the many innovative ways that parishes are endeavouring to promote unity within their parishes and to reach out to the wider community such as; companion animal outreach, young family parish picnics, outreach to housebound elderly, emergency aid for visa holders during times of hardship, Thank God It’s Friday TGIF coffee outreach, joining a service club such as Lions to become a part of the service community.

Participants found the session encouraging and were keen to build on what has begun with further input planned on this topic. Thank you to Debbie for being a special part of our September Clergy Assembly.
