2020 ARTS AND SPORTS AWARDS

ARTS AWARDS

Despite its disruptions and uncertainties, 2020 has produced outstanding successes in the arts. Some competitions were lucky enough to run, others were cancelled, but what we wanted to celebrate was the remarkable journey taken, against the odds, to participate, explore and achieve at an incredibly high level.

The dedication students have shown in all areas of the creative arts has resulted in success at regional, national and international levels. All the awards acknowledge work beyond the academic curriculum and we also acknowledge the tremendous contribution of dedicated staff who coach groups and encourage individuals to achieve at the very highest level.

For the first time, the event was held in our new theatre, with our newly formed Clyde Street Jazz Band performing in the foyer. The multimedia presentations looked and sounded stunning. It really was a night to remember and captured the zeitgeist of this COVID-19 year.

During the evening, Director of Performing Arts Shelagh Thompson paid tribute to the Arts Prefect Anna Casey, saying: “Anna has played a big part in making 2020 move forward in a very positive way, leading with warmth and generosity, always smiling and upbeat, always there for everyone. She led her Arts Council during lockdown with maturity, encouraging everyone to get involved and displaying a really positive ‘can do’ attitude. In the eight years I have known her, Anna has never let me down; her loyalty and reliability will be a hard act to follow.”

The evening included the presentation of certificates for achievement in various arts categories and the recognition of representation and achievement at regional and national levels. Ending the proceedings, the highlight of the evening was the presentation of the cups, awarded to girls with an exemplary level of commitment, ability and participation.
