Determined to keep the 2020 NZCT Chamber Music Competition alive and kicking, and despite having lost 10 weeks of rehearsal, Diocesan entered 18 girls in the competition, on a variety of instruments.

The NZCT Chamber Music Contest is the only music competition left for secondary students with live national finals at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington in August. Despite lockdown, this year’s contest drew some 200 group entries nationwide and Diocesan made an impressive run for selection at the national finals.

Our groups did us proud at both the district and regional finals. Competing across the northern region we had some great results; four groups received awards at the Auckland finals and three groups were then selected for the regional finals. We were the best represented school with 13 Dio musicians selected for awards:

Dioctesan won the Highly Commended Award Trio Glivenko won the Highly Commended Award Aquarelles won the KBB Special Award EveryoneHerz won the Adjudicator’s Award

Three Diocesan groups have made it through to the national finals in Wellington – Dioctesan, Aquarelles and Trio Glivenko. To make the success even sweeter, Trio Glivenko have been announced the outright regional winner. We are thrilled with the results as only 12 groups have been selected from over 200 groups nationwide. This means a quarter of all national finalists are from Diocesan – definitely a new record! Five of our students are Year13s so it is particularly special for them in their final year when so many other competitions have been cancelled.

This year, the groups were required to submit live video performances and an additional video of themselves introducing their work. Due to lockdown, no live performances took place at district or regional level, and there was no feedback from adjudicators at all the usual levels of this competition, so in many ways it has been a tougher competition for all our young aspiring instrumentalists across the country. We are delighted with the results, under exceptional circumstances. Everybody Herz Herzogenberg Andante Con Moto. Ella Riley horn; Jessica Marshall trumpet; Anastasia Sun piano.
