AWARDS THE DIMOCK DIFFERENCE LEADERSHIP AWARD HARVARD PILGRIM HEALTH CARE The Dimock Center is honored to present the Dimock Difference Leadership Award to long-time partner Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. Michael Carson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and Karen Voci, President of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, accept the award on behalf of the company.

We are deeply grateful for Harvard Pilgrim’s 27-year partnership in helping our patients receive integrated care. Throughout the years, they have supported The Dimock’s mission to heal and uplift individuals and families in our community.

We are especially thankful for their collaboration on an emergency meals program to support our families during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the required closure of Dimock’s Early Education programs, our families lost access to the healthy meals our programs provided. The Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation stepped in with a grant to help develop an emergency meals distribution program. Thanks to Harvard Pilgrim, more than 9,000 fresh and healthful meals were distributed to Dimock families and community members.

Your impact HECTOR Hector and his three children— residents of The Dimock Center’s Mary Eliza Mahoney House Emergency Shelter for homeless families.

Dimock’s Mary Eliza Mahoney House provides emergency shelter for up to 23 families who are homeless. The program works to reduce the challenges that exist for families in crisis, including survivors of domestic violence. In addition to housing, the shelter residents are connected with Dimock’s comprehensive health care, mental health services, substance use disorder treatment, and early education.

“The Dimock Center feels like a big family.

They’re all linked to each other. Everybody has one goal and it is my family’s health care.”

MANDY When Mandy came to The Dimock Center for prenatal care, she was also able to access behavioral health services to aid in her recovery from substance use disorder. Later when her healthy baby arrived, she was able to sign on with a Dimock pediatrician to begin her child’s important care. During the COVID-19 pandemic, her Dimock team shifted to telehealth to ensure they could continue to deliver her family’s care, uninterrupted.

“Working full time and seeing how COVID-19 has directly impacted people’s lives has been really overwhelming for me and for my family. Knowing that my children are able to receive these essential meals at home has really taken a huge burden off of me.”

TAMMY In the spring of 2020, as a single mother, Head Start parent, Tammy had to cope with the enormous stresses of having to figure out how to feed her family, while also protecting her children from the coronavirus. All three of her children have respiratory issues, making them more vulnerable. Tammy was relieved to hear about Dimock’s new emergency meals program for Dimock’s Early Education families, generously funded by the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation.

Elsa first came to Dimock when she was just six months old. She and her eight siblings grew up in the Dimock neighborhood, and have been Dimock patients for most of their lives. Elsa also brought her children to Dimock when they were little, and hopes that when she has grandchildren, they will come to Dimock, too.

“Having familiar faces there every time that I visit makes me feel more comfortable and understood. I don’t know where I would be without Dimock, the way that they care for me and my family—I can’t find this type of care anywhere else.”

ROBERT LEWIS, JR .

Founder and President, The BASE Robert Lewis, Jr. is a nationally recognized thought leader, public speaker and passionate advocate for urban youth. Robert has deep experience with grassroots, community-based organizations throughout Greater Boston and government entities, colleges, sports franchises, and philanthropic foundations throughout the country. His career has included significant roles that include Executive Director of the Boston Centers for Youth and Families, President and Executive Director of the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), Senior Vice President of City Year’s national operations and Executive Director of City Year Boston, and Vice President for Program at the Boston Foundation.

In 2013, Robert left The Boston Foundation to pursue a lifelong dream to launch The BASE. The BASE is a model and methodology that changes the paradigm for urban youth by providing student athletes with the opportunity, knowledge, skills and launched in confidence needed to develop a winning game plan for success both on and off the field. Among Robert’s many awards and distinctions are the 2015 Sports Museum’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Boston Baseball Writer’s Annual Dinner, and an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Cambridge (MA) College. In addition, he served on MA Governor-elect Charlie Baker’s transition team, helping develop Baker’s statewide urban agenda.

KAREN HOLME S WARD

Director of Public Affairs and Community Services, WCVB Channel 5 Karen Holmes Ward is the Director of Public Affairs and Community Services as well as host and executive producer of CityLine, WCVB’s award-winning weekly magazine program which addresses the accomplishments, concerns and issues facing people of color living in Boston and its suburbs.

CityLine has been a recipient of the Associated Press Massachusetts/Rhode Island ‘Best’ Public Affairs Program and numerous Emmy nominations.

Karen also oversees WCVB’s public service and community outreach efforts.

She was instrumental to launching the Emmy award winning Commonwealth 5, WCVB’s first-of-its-kind web-based initiative that promoted philanthropy by matching viewer-donors with non-profits via the Internet. Karen has enjoyed a forty-year career in broadcasting including early stints as a writer at WEEI News Radio, News Director at WILD-Radio where she hosted a daily one-hour talk show, and a reporter at WGBH-TV. In 2018 she was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. (145 words)
