Welcome to Steppin’ Out! The Steppin’ Out Gala Committee welcomes you to the 34th annual Steppin’ Out for The Dimock Center! We are excited about this year’s program and are thrilled that you are joining us for a wonderful evening to celebrate what Dimock means to our community.

The Dimock Center is a special place. It continually innovates and develops new ways to support patients and families. This is more important now than ever before as we all continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic. We are so thankful for your support. In order to present the safest event possible, Steppin’ Out will once again be entirely virtual. Inaugurated and presented to its namesake in 2019, the award recognizes civic leaders who work to erase racial and ethnic barriers to equal access to health care and human services.

As the first African American to represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate, Senator Warnock is a trailblazer and fearless in his fight to expand access to affordable health care to low-income communities. An advocate, policymaker, activist, and religious leader, Senator Warnock embodies the values that Congressman Lewis upheld throughout his life. Tonight, we celebrate Senator Warnock for being unafraid to cause the “good trouble” John Lewis spoke of for the good of his community as we present him with this award.

The COVID-19 pandemic hit low-income communities of color—Dimock patients and families—particularly hard. We knew our response would need to be robust—and swift. Thanks to your incredible commitment and support, it was.

Leondra’s history with The Dimock Center runs deep. She has been a patient here since the ’80s, and had gone through our Acute Treatment Services program for substance use treatment. Since then, she has kept coming back to Dimock for her medical needs as a patient of our Adult Medicine Clinic and was connected to a mental health counselor through our innovative model of integrated care.

At Dimock, mental health and primary care services are integrated into our Adult Medicine Clinic, providing easy access to mental health services for patients of our health center. Licensed clinicians work closely with primary care providers addressing the holistic needs of patients.

Cristelle first came to The Dimock Center looking for childcare services for her youngest daughter, Chanelle. They were homeless at the time and living in a shelter. What she found was so much more than childcare. Our Child & Family Services staff connected Cristelle to job search programs and other critical support—like clothing and diapers for Chanelle. For Cristelle, the difference Dimock made in her life went way beyond material support: she found a community that cared.

Jerrall is one of 21 residents of the John Flowers Recovery Home, a program that provides residential support for men following completion of a detox program.

Residents work outside the home, receiving support to secure employment within one month of arrival.

We offer residents individual and group counseling, case management, and access to comprehensive services in our Health Center and Child & Family Services divisions. Through an alumni network, participants stay connected with peers to provide ongoing encouragement to aid their recovery. Former participants in the program find this ongoing support particularly valuable as they progress with their recovery while gradually advancing in their personal and professional goals.

Dimock Positivity Catalyst Award We are proud to present the inaugural Dimock Positivity Catalyst Award to staff members in each of Dimock’s three primary divisions: Health Services, Child & Family Services, and Behavioral Health Services.

This award is presented to non-management members of Dimock’s staff who are most compassionate about our community, who go above and beyond, and who push us to be better every day. This award is meant to recognize those Dimock staff who are catalysts for positivity, who despite challenges, have shown up as their best selves, knowing that a better day was on the horizon for themselves and for their community.

HEALTH SERVICE S: ISSA NOEL , DENTAL ASSISTANT Issa is a dedicated employee who never shows up to work without a smile on his face. He arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from Congo when he was eight years old and has dedicated himself to helping others through his work at Dimock.

He takes initiative to learn new things, strengthen the dental clinic, and ensure a welcoming, positive experience for our patients.

CHILD AND FAMILY SERV ICE S: E NI D AG UIRRE , EARLY HEAD START TE ACH E R Enid has been a teacher here at Dimock since 2016. She has gone above and beyond for the children and families in her care, as well as for her colleagues, especially during the pandemic. When we hosted our diaper and food distributions on campus in the early days of the pandemic, she would personally deliver supplies to families who were unable to travel to the campus to pick up these necessities.

From her first day in 2014, Tia loved the residents and the residents loved Tia. In the summer of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, Tia was diagnosed with cancer. One of the things that brought Tia joy and hope during her course of receiving chemotherapy was the thought of returning to work and seeing all the residents once again at Sycamore Street. She did just that in December 2020.

ROBERT LEWIS, JR .

Founder and President, The BASE Robert Lewis, Jr. is a nationally recognized thought leader, public speaker, and social innovator. He’s well known as a bridge-builder, convener, and catalyst for collaboration among diverse business, civic, and public sector entities in Greater Boston and beyond.

Most importantly, he’s a tireless advocate for our urban youth, believing it is our moral obligation to help them succeed.

In 2013, Robert launched the BASE to shift the national mindset about what it takes for urban youth to succeed. Serving boys and girls, The BASE leverages their passion for baseball, softball, basketball, and esports to create pathways to higher education and meaningful careers through scholarships, academic support, and internships.

He serves as Executive in Residence at the Lewis Family Institute at Babson College, Co-Chairs Governor Baker’s Statewide Black Advisory Commission, sits on the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation Board of Directors, is a Trustee for the University of Massachusetts, and received Honorary Doctorate Degrees from Assumption College, MA; Cambridge College, MA; Franklin Pierce University, NH; William James College, MA; Simmons College, MA and New England Law, MA.

KAREN HOLME S WARD

Director of Public Affairs and Community Services, WCVB Channel 5 Karen Holmes Ward is the Director of Public Affairs and Community Services as well as host and executive producer of CityLine, WCVB’s awardwinning weekly magazine program which addresses the accomplishments, concerns and issues facing people of color living in Boston and its suburbs.

CityLine has been a recipient of the Associated Press Massachusetts/Rhode Island ‘Best’ Public Affairs Program and numerous Emmy nominations.

Karen also oversees WCVB’s public service and community outreach efforts.

She was instrumental to launching the Emmy award-winning Commonwealth 5, WCVB’s first-of-its-kind web-based initiative that promoted philanthropy by matching viewer-donors with nonprofits via the Internet. Karen has enjoyed a forty-year career in broadcasting including early stints as a writer at WEEI News Radio, News Director at WILD-Radio where she hosted a daily onehour talk show, and a reporter at WGBH-TV. In 2018 she was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame.
