Dear Dimock Family, It truly has been a year like no other. The Dimock Center and all community health centers have a duty to care for our community—and a responsibility to seek out those who need care. This mission has never been more important than in this past year. Since 1862, Dimock has been committed to breaking down barriers to health care and to correcting historic social and racial health inequities. We have now experienced an unparalleled public health crisis, witnessed the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our patients and families who are mostly low-income people of color, and heard increasing calls for racial justice and accountability in all aspects of our society. As we faced unprecedented challenges, our Dimock Family stepped up in ways that amazed and inspired us. We can’t thank you enough for your incredible commitment and support. Since March 2020, whether you made a gift to our Emergency Fund or an annual contribution, or supported one of our events, your gift had a tremendous impact. You ensured that we were able to offer uninterrupted care via telehealth, and to quickly respond with COVID-19 testing and contact tracing to meet the vital needs of our patients amidst the global pandemic. Your support helped feed thousands of members of our community at a time when Massachusetts was experiencing the largest increase of food insecurity in the nation. When COVID-19 vaccines became available, your support allowed us to launch a COVID-19 vaccine clinic that has distributed over 12,000 vaccines to those who need them most urgently—both on campus in our vaccine clinic and in community sites. Most importantly, you made sure that Dimock’s doors remained open, and our team of providers was able to ensure our patients received the quality care and support they needed. Dimock has always embraced our duty to care for our community. Through the work of our dedicated staff, we uphold and advance our mission to heal and uplift our neighbors in the face of the challenges we have experienced. As we look to the near future and strive to meet the increased need for our services, your support will be more critical than ever before. Disproportionate Racial Impact of COVID-19 Even before the pandemic, the Roxbury community of color suffered far poorer health outcomes than predominantly white and more affluent Boston neighborhoods. In fact, a 2018 report found that the average life expectancy in the Back Bay was nearly 90 years, while just three miles away in Roxbury, it was only 59 years. These racial inequities have only worsened due to COVID-19. In the first half of 2020 alone, the life expectancy for Black Americans dropped by 2.7 years, a rate 3x greater than the decrease for white Americans. Latinos also suffered a disproportionate drop in life expectancy of 1.9 years, a rate more than double that of the white population.

“ When my daughter first started going to the childcare, we were homeless and living in a shelter. The staff knew and did everything they could to help us.”
More than Childcare Cristelle first came to The Dimock Center looking for childcare services for her youngest daughter, Chanelle. They were homeless at the time and living in a shelter. What she found was so much more than childcare—she found a community. A community of people eager to help her achieve her goals. Dimock staff in our Child & Family services programs connected Cristelle to job search programs and other critical support—like clothing and diapers for Chanelle. “It’s hard when you have to decide: Do I buy milk for my kid or do I buy diapers?” Cristelle knew other parents at the shelter who would not be able to send their children to other childcare programs if they didn’t have enough diapers. At Dimock, they always provided them. “Just that one simple thing—it was a big help,” says Cristelle. “They make sure they take care of you. Even if you’re lacking, they take care of you.”
When Cristelle found housing for herself and her daughter, Dimock staff was supportive, making sure they had everything they needed. “I was so excited to let them know I found an apartment. Sharing that moment with them was great!” Cristelle states. So when our child and family centers closed due to COVID-19, Cristelle knew she would be back. “Chanelle couldn’t wait to get back to school once they opened.”
“I’m secure. I feel like my daughter’s safe. I feel like my daughter is getting educated. I couldn’t ask for a better daycare.”
Cristelle says she felt safe sending Chanelle back to the Foundations for Learning program in person when it reopened because of her previous experience as a classroom volunteer. She saw firsthand how dedicated her daughter’s teachers were to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all children in their care. “They reassured us it was safe to send our kids back, and I appreciate that,” Cristelle shares. “I’m secure. I feel like my daughter’s safe. I feel like my daughter is getting educated,” says Cristelle. “I couldn’t ask for a better daycare, I really couldn’t. I have nothing but respect for Dimock.” The Dimock Center

Dimock’s COVID-19 Response When our community was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020, The Dimock Family stepped up to meet the urgent needs of patients and families. The COVID-19 pandemic hit low-income communities of color —Dimock patients and families—particularly hard. We knew our response would need to be robust—and swift. Thanks to the incredible commitment and support from so many kind and caring donors, it was. We quickly constructed a COVID-19 testing shed outside of our Health Services building that welcomed walk-up and drive-up patients, and have performed over 18,000 tests with the support of our Principal Network Affiliate, Beth Israel Lahey Health. We also launched a contact-tracing program to identify COVID-19 positive patients and their contacts and provide them the testing and resources they might need. As part of this project, Dimock was selected as the first health center in the state to offer rapid-access testing, helping us get results to people within 24 hours. All of these programs were made possible through the generous contributions of 165 individuals and partner organizations to our Emergency Fund. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic did not erase the other critical needs of our patients. In fact, we saw an increased need for behavioral health support, as well as the worsening of chronic health conditions in our patients. Our generous supporters ensured that throughout the pandemic, we were able to continue to provide high-quality health services through telemedicine when we could not perform in-person visits, and to develop other innovative care solutions. In May 2020, we opened a dedicated substance use treatment unit for patients with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis to ensure they received uninterrupted care. This innovative program was only the second of its kind in the state. And, in December 2020, we were thrilled to begin offering COVID-19 vaccines to staff and Dimock residents, quickly expanding our vaccine clinic to patients and members of the community, and administering more than 12,000 vaccines by June 2021. We could not be more grateful for all the tremendous support from The Dimock Family when it was most needed. Thank you all so very much.

Dental Medicine at Dimock Fighting for Oral Health Equity Oral health is critical to a person’s overall health and wellbeing, but lack of access to quality oral health care and affordable dental insurance keeps many from seeking care. According to Myechia Minter-Jordan, MD, MBA, President and CEO of CareQuest Institute for Oral Health and former Dimock President and CEO, “Poor oral health is linked to adverse birth outcomes and can directly impact a patient’s ability to effectively manage chronic illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, and respiratory conditions. And yet, too often, oral health services are not considered essential primary care. The result is a broken and inequitable system.”

Low-income people of color, the majority of Dimock patients, suffer disproportionately lower oral health outcomes. In addition to its impact on chronic health conditions, poor oral health can also negatively affect an individual’s self-esteem.

In fact, nearly one in three low-income adults in the U.S. report that the appearance of their mouth affects their ability to interview for a job.
This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, existing oral health inequities grew further, as many oral health providers were forced to close. But Dimock was there to ensure that patients continued to receive the highest quality of care—even when they weren’t able to meet in person. “We were always there for families, answering their questions on the phone and providing guidance and education [on oral care] every day,” says Pediatric Dental Assistant Issa Noel. Dimock’s ability to offer robust teledental services actually led to a 20% increase in dental visits in 2020. And by July 2020, when most practices were still closed or restricting care, Dimock was able to resume full in-person oral care. COVID-19 testing was critical to safely resuming oral care earlier than other dental offices in the area. All dental patients were required to have pre-procedure COVID-19 tests to ensure the safety of our patients and providers. In fact, all patients who received testing at Dimock’s COVID-19 testing shed in 2020 had their tests done by members of the dental team. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dimock remained committed to providing unwavering care and expanding equitable access to oral care for our community. 8

Dimock’s Vaccine Street Team As the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines began in late 2020, it became clear that in spite of the virus’s disproportionate impact on communities of color, Black and Latinx individuals were being vaccinated at an alarmingly lower rate than their white counterparts. A key reason for this disparity—in addition to systemic and structural barriers—is a lack of confidence in the vaccine, in large part due to the legacy of medical racism in the United States. The Dimock Center has been a trusted source of care in our community for more than 150 years. We’re committed to breaking down barriers to care and correcting historic racial inequities by providing everyone who lives in Roxbury and surrounding communities with access to comprehensive, highquality health care, mental health support, and early education. In February 2021, Dimock launched its Vaccine Street Team program, a community outreach initiative with an aim to increase vaccine confidence in communities of color. Conceived by longtime Dimock friends and President’s Council Co-Chairs Flash (Dimock Board Chairman Emeritus) and Bennie Wiley, Dimock’s Vaccine Street Team is made up of more than twenty trusted community leaders who shared their own vaccine stories with the aim to build trust, combat fears, and encourage an open dialogue surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine.
By sharing their stories, they helped other members of our community gain confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine and in their decision to be vaccinated at Dimock. Higher vaccination rates in communities of color are critical to putting an end to this devastating pandemic and to realizing our mission of a healthier, more equitable Boston. Many thanks to our Vaccine Street Team for being a model of community leadership, and to our many partners that have supported us in making vaccine access more equitable. We’re particularly grateful to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts for inspiring our Vaccine Street Team with their own COVID-19 vaccine education and outreach to communities of color, including a special video and complementary story, which featured interviews with Dimock’s President and CEO Dr. Charles Anderson and Dimock staff of color who shared their stories about what getting the vaccine meant to them.

Feeding Families During the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity in Massachusetts doubled —the largest relative increase of foodinsecure individuals in the nation. Those hit hardest by food insecurity were communities of color and families with children who lost access to the regular, healthy meals provided in schools when their children began remote learning. Seeing this significant need in the community, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation provided generous support of an emergency meals distribution program at The Dimock Center. Partnering with Fresh Food Generation and Commonwealth Kitchen, we distributed 10,000 meals and 4,000 bags of fresh produce to our Early Education Families and other families in need early on during the spring of 2020. Project Bread generously granted funds to purchase grocery gift cards for our families, and Vitra Health provided a donation of turkeys so the holidays could still feel special. As the pandemic continued to take a toll on our community, we saw that food assistance remained a critical need. Thanks to the support of The Stop & Shop Companies and Tedy’s Team, our food distribution program has grown. We have continued to distribute bags of healthy groceries, fresh produce, and Stop & Shop gift cards to the community. As of April 2021, we have distributed more than 66,000 lbs. of food to 21,600 individuals. And Fidelity Investments launched a twice-weekly boxed lunch distribution of delicious, healthy meals for our patients and frontline workers. We are so grateful for all of the partners who stepped up to provide this important aid to a community in need. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the volunteers who stood outside, in rain or shine (or snow!), and helped to feed our community.

In a year marked by unprecedented health challenges and isolation, it was more meaningful than ever to host an event celebrating community wellness. In partnership with HoodFit and the Boston Athletic Association, we held our first-ever virtual road race in September: the 6th Annual Road to Wellness 5K Walk/Run.

The Road to Wellness is a celebration of community health and wellness for participants of all ages and fitness levels. Throughout the summer, our incredible team of coaches led weekly, free, and safe outdoor training sessions leading up to the event, and launched a virtual Ask a Coach series. The day of the race, we celebrated the kickoff by hosting a livestream with our coaches, partners, and presenting sponsor Tufts Health Plan. More than 400 participants walked or ran in their own neighborhoods, from Pennsylvania to Ontario and in our own backyard in Roxbury, and shared photos of themselves crossing their own “finish lines.” We are tremendously grateful for everyone who supported us and joined us for our 6th Annual Road to Wellness!

I've been a patient at Dimock since the ’80s. I've been to the Health Center. I've done Behavioral Health, and I've been in the Detox before. When I started seeing my current therapist, Olivia, that was the first time I was totally consistent about taking care of my behavioral health. I finally accepted that I had mental health issues, and that the drugs were just a symptom. Olivia hears me, and she doesn't judge me. She holds me accountable, and I'm grateful for that. Eliminating Barriers to Care through Dimock’s Integrated Model Dimock’s model integrates medical, behavioral health, and substance use disorder services into one primary care clinic. “In our integrated behavioral health setting, primary care physicians and behavioral health clinicians work together to improve patient experience and eliminate barriers to care,” says Dr. Nandini Sengupta, Dimock’s incoming Chief Medical Officer. Behavioral Health Integration has enabled Dimock to hire more clinicians, serve more patients, reduce wait times, minimize stigma, and improve provider satisfaction. “I feel really fortunate to be in this setting, where we have an understanding that when someone comes in through the door, we’re going to think about all aspects of their care,” says Claudia Rizzo, LCSW, Dimock Adult Medicine Access Therapist. “I don’t think that a lot of places have this kind of robust support.” Claudia is often the first person a patient sees—or hears on the phone—when they seek behavioral health services at Dimock. “I’m on a team of incredible therapists and primary care staff. While I view myself as the one that’s trying to think about where to guide this person in our system, it really would be nothing without being able to connect them to our other therapists or psychiatrists.” During the pandemic, says Claudia, this model of care became more vital than ever. “There were a lot more people that were reaching out for support, specifically around feeling isolated, feeling disconnected, feeling really anxious.”

As the pandemic took an emotional and social toll, it also took an economic one, further exacerbating existing stressors for many of our patients. “We are seeing people who are struggling more and more with issues like unemployment and underemployment, poverty, housing instability, food insecurity, and lack of access to childcare, which cause significant emotional and mental distress,” says Olivia Amadon, LICSW, Dimock’s Adult Medicine Behavioral Health & OARS Program Manager. In 2020, Dimock’s Behavioral Health Services programs saw a near 20% increase in the number of visits, as we met the growing need for mental health support. Claudia thanks telehealth services for Dimock’s ability to see more patients. “We were able to reach a lot more people, because we eliminated barriers to getting here, like transportation, childcare, or taking time off from work, because we had the opportunity to do telehealth. We had this opportunity to meet people where they were. In a really challenging, trying time, more people were willing to reach out for support— and that support was there.”

The Dimock Center is honored to be one of the Red Sox Foundation’s cornerstone programs, and we are incredibly grateful for the wide range of support we receive each year. Even during the pandemic, the Red Sox Foundation found creative ways to support both Dimock patients and staff. The Red Sox Foundation made generous financial contributions to meet the urgent needs of our community caused by the pandemic; volunteered to help run our new emergency food distribution; invited Dimock’s health care heroes to attend Red Sox games, first via hilarious fan cutouts, and then virtually via the NESN Fan Cast on Opening Day; and included Dimock CEO, Dr. Charles Anderson in the Foundation Friday segment of the NESN pregame show. We applaud the Red Sox Foundation for their commitment to helping to break down barriers to care and ensure that those who need help the most receive the care and support they need.
