YAXLEY WI Peterborough Before Development In June our speaker was Stephen Perry who spoke and showed slides of Peterborough Before Development and it was amazing how things have changed in a relatively short time. I came to the city in 1967 and can employee and parked to make various streets look busier than they were! remember things like the Bus Station being where the Courthouse now There was no July meeting but stands and actually having two Railway members had an outing to Easton Stations. Walled Garden timed for their display Who can remember Brierleys store of sweet peas which were glorious, and the sun shone on us, always a bonus. at the top of Bridge Street, the only place in Peterborough where you Our speaker for 8 August is Yani could buy 3 legged tights! I don’t know Knight who will talk about needle where they were manufactured but the felting and we shall be able to try it makers must have had a peculiar image ourselves. As usual the meeting will be in the upstairs room (stairlift available) of people in this area! Appearing in several of the slides at The Lancaster Club in Main Street, at 7.30 with the doors open about was a Ford Anglia car which Stephen thought was owned by a council 6.45pm. Yaxley Women’s Institute meets at The Lancaster Club, Yaxley on the second Thursday of each month. New members and visitors welcome.

A Vietnam Adventure Our guest speaker at a very warm July meeting was Tish Peek and her Vietnam Adventure. Tish used to be a teacher in Huntingdon, and when one of her students, a Vietnamese boy arrived at the school unable to speak English very well, but still managed to pass all his exams, it inspired her to visit the country. The student had fled Vietnam with his family and very little possessions in a boat to escape persecution. We were shown lots of photos of the country, as Tish had toured from north to south, visiting all the major landmarks and cities. We learned about the history of Vietnam, which is very complex, and I will run out of space with just a fraction of it, starting with French occupation in the 1800s, later as a divided country until it was unified in the 1970s. All through this it suffered wars, the most publicised being the Vietnam War when the Americans got involved, thankfully the British didn’t get embroiled in this one. A beautiful country that today produces rice, petroleum, coffee, fish and silk among many other products. The flag of Vietnam is a red background with a gold 5 pointed star on it, the red symbolises bloodshed and revolutionary

struggle, whilst the 5 points of the star reflect the population of intellectuals, peasants, soldiers, workers and youths. Tish’s talk gave us a great insight into this country and we learned a lot of things we didn’t know, it has varied religions including Buddhism, Taoism and Catholicism. They farm the rice in terraced fields along the hillsides and produce the most wonderfully soft silk garments, samples of which were handed around, including the traditional hat, which was surprisingly comfortable. A lovely talk from Tish who is obviously inspired by the country and by the young boy she originally met many years ago. Thoroughly recommended.

We look forward to seeing our members and visitors are very welcome. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. For further details, please contact holmewi2015@gmail.com

The Cambridgeshire Bobby Scheme Have you recently been a victim of crime or feel at risk of becoming a victim? If so we may be able to help. The Bobby Scheme is a small local charity run by the Cambridgeshire Police Shrievalty Trust and operates across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Either one of our two security advisors, Glen Carter – retired policeman and Andy Cleathero – ex security guard will visit your home free of charge if you are 60 years old or over and have recently been a victim of crime. During your visit Glen or Andy will carry out a thorough security assessment of your home, they will discuss options with you and install various security devices such as alarms, door chains, window alarms and sensors. Both Glen and Andy are trained to give up to date crime prevention advice on a wide range of topics and other products available. A home fire safety check is also carried out on behalf of the Fire Service and smoke alarms fitted if necessary. As well as helping people feel safer in their own homes, the visits give peace of mind and improved confidence and reassurance. Last year the scheme visited and helped secure nearly 1400 homes, this figure amounts to approximately 50 homes per week. If you feel you would like a visit to reduce your chances of becoming a victim, the Bobby Scheme can offer the same service provided you are aged over 65 or are disabled and are happy to donate £50 to cover essential costs. If anyone would like a visit, please contact us on 01480 413311 or visit our website www.thebobbyscheme.org The Bobby Scheme also supports victims of domestic violence. These victims are referred by various agencies such as the police, social services, Women’s Aid to name but a few. Public urged to stay fire safe in hot weather Cambridgeshire residents have been urged to stay fire safe when outdoors over the summer The weather so far has not been as warm as forecast earlier in the year. However with high temperatures still to come potentially there is still the risk of fires in open areas of land easily spreading and becoming out of control. In June and July 2018 crews attended 551 fires in the open across the county, an increase of more than 50 per cent on the previous year. Last July alone saw crews attend 376 fires in the open in various places around the county. This year we believe the high temperatures will continue into August. The Service’s Combined Fire Control has also seen a sharp increase in the amount of emergency calls they have received reporting incidents in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. Almost 4,000 calls were answered by emergency call handlers in June and July, an increase of 13 per cent from the previous year. Group Commander Paul Clarke, head of community fire safety at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We want to help ensure that people enjoy the sunny weather while it’s here safely. High temperatures and

dry areas of land can be perfect conditions for a fire to spread. Something as simple as not stubbing a cigarette out properly, or using a disposable barbecue on grass, can start a fire that can develop quickly.” There are seven simple steps we urge residents to take to help prevent an outdoor fire: q Ensure cigarettes are completely out w Do not throw cigarettes out of car windows onto grass verges or vegetation e Put disposable barbecues on bricks, do not place directly on grass r Do not leave glass bottles lying on the ground, the sun’s rays reflect through the glass and can start a fire t When camping, do not leave camp fires unattended and make sure it is completely out before you leave it y Use barbecues on a hard, flat surface, away from grass, shrubs or fencing u Talk to your children about the dangers of starting a fire.

INK? WHAT DO YOU TH

YAXLEY FREE TABLES Give it away rather than dispose in Landfill. One person’s junk is another person’s treasure Once a month the Yaxley community will have the opportunity to give away for FREE, any household items they no longer need and would rather share with the community than add to land fill. It’s your community and apart from some simple organisational and common-sense rules, it’s up to you to make it a success. Feel free to stroll around one day a month and take anything that may be of use to you. It’s usually better if you walk, then streets or cul-de-sacs don’t get swamped with cars with no place to park. It’s good exercise too and an opportunity to meet your fellow community members. However, if you find something that is too heavy to carry, then a quick vehicle pick-up would be ok.

How it works Notify Admin that you will have a Free Table or“pitch” this month and mention your street name (not house number). If it’s a long road, like Broadway, mention roughly whereabouts without giving the house number.

A list of all participating streets will be sent to Yaxley Gazette by 5th of the month for publication in that month’s digest. Once a month, (usually the last Sunday in the month), between 9am and 3pm, put out a table or create a “pitch” holding all items you want to offer for FREE to your community.

Display a sign that says everything is FREE You don’t have to attend your stall, but you are responsible for clearing it all away at the end of the day. If it’s raining or snowing, it is likely to be postponed to the next Sunday and so on. Updates will be made on Yaxley Gazette Facebook page. Also put out a “Thank You” book or sheet of paper where community members can leave comments and their appreciation of what you donated. Keep this book or paper in a plastic wallet to preserve it in case it rains. It’s always nice to see you have been appreciated by your community, so it is worth saving these thank you notes.

Free Tables Only put tables out with public access (not in private gardens). You are responsible for removing anything left at the end of the day, so don’t leave it on the street after 3pm. If you have a community street table, where more than one home puts freebies out, you are collectively responsible for removing everything from your street. Do not Fly Tip. Remember there is always next month to move the untaken items on. Don’t block a pathway that is used by pedestrians, cyclists, prams or mobility scooters.

Community Browsers Be courteous and don’t make a mess of the tables or pitches as you rummage for free stuff. It is always nice to receive something of use for free, so please show your appreciation to the donor by leaving a thank you note and remember to take a pen with you beforehand. Share your finds with your community friends. Don’t take a table or pitch home unless they are also offered for free.

Comic Cons

by Richard S

Comic Cons are big business now, for both attendees and guests. If you have no idea of what a Comic Con is, let me fill you in. Comic Cons are a spectacle to behold and, for any film and TV fans, this can be a mecca for meeting and conversing with likeminded fans. They are a way for everyone to get together under one roof and immerse themselves in the world of Film & TV; from traders & guests, to memorabilia and everything in between. Most can be a full-on explosion of sounds and colour, with novices being subjected to an aspect of life (a sometimes claustrophobic, energetic and supremely busy aspect I must add) that is becoming more and more popular to those of us who have a passion for all things big and small screen. They have a way of bringing together people from all walks of life, from all corners of the country, and in many cases, the World. With a sudden explosion of smaller, more local Cons are beginning to appear in almost every major town across the UK. Some are fantastic, and some are merely a moneymaking scheme for the operators. You have the large, main Cons of Showmasters & MCM, along with Em-Con, that operate out of the major cities, and offer the high-end actors and actresses from wellknown TV shows and films. These can be

very expensive and leave you feeling a little bit lost, as well as hugely out of pocket. This also goes for the more specific Cons, such as Walker Stalker (mainly The Walking Dead actors) & Heroes & Villains (Arrow, Flash etc) It is the smaller, lesser publicised Cons that tend to be the best for value for money, have the more specialised guests that many people would never usually get to meet, or who would not be found at the larger, more expensive Cons. These can be so expertly run and a real joy to be a part of for anyone who is a novice all the way to seasoned Con attendees. I personally find these ones to be much better than the larger ones and I have had the privilege of attending quite a few over the recent months, 1 particularly disappointing and several supremely exciting and inclusive for everyone. There was also a specialist Con for those with disabilities, Feel the Force Day, which was held here in Peterborough and was possibly the most humbling experience I have ever had, through doing Live Facebook streams

& interviews with the celebrity guest as well as mingling with the attendees. You can see more on my Facebook about this. The major mainstay for all Cons are the cosplayers. For those that do not know what this is, it is where a person takes on the persona of a film or TV character, dresses up as them, and acts out life as that character. It really is a joy to behold. The skills and intricacies in not only creating the costumes but also the depiction of said characters persona etc is huge, and cosplaying is hugely popular across the board. They really make the Cons enjoyable and are happy to have photos taken with you, as long as you ask! This is a big thing for all cosplayers and it is something that is being highly publicised in groups and pages for Cosplayers. Always ask permission to take a photo. I would highly recommend anyone to attend a local Con (there is one in Kettering in February 2018 & in Cambridge in April 2018) and to experience them first hand. There really is nothing quite like them!

Build it Nature

A pioneering project to create a rich natural habitat for rare insects, plants and other wildlife out of a previously lifeless, barren area of land in the Hamptons has won two prestigious awards from the body that recognises the outstanding work of ecologists and environmental managers across the UK and Ireland.

EXCEPTIONAL ECOLOGICAL PROJECT IN THE HAMPTONS RECOGNISED BY TWO NATIONAL AWARDS Following 20 years of careful development, the Hamptons now boasts more than 1,000 acres of open space, lakes and woodland areas, providing a habitat for a huge range of birds, reptiles, insects and rare plants, and thought to be the highest amount of green space per resident in any new development in the country. However, much of the site has had to be created from scratch, surrounded by the legacy of more than a hundred years of brickmaking and other industrial uses. The latest partnership project at the Hamptons between O&H Hampton Ltd, BSG Ecology and nature conservation charity Buglife has turned one of those brownfield sites into an extraordinary, thriving hotspot for nature. The project won the best Small-scale Mitigation Award and Tony Bradshaw Award for outstanding best practice from CIEEM, the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.

The Tony Bradshaw Award recognizes exceptional projects and is only made on a discretionary basis. It was a great accolade for O&H Hampton, BSG and Buglife to win this. The judges noted that the Hamptons project demonstrated best practice in terms of habitatcreation techniques, sustainability and collaborative working, as well as clear benefits to nature. Monitoring at the site has recently revealed the presence of over 400 invertebrate species, including the rare black-headed mason wasp and three other species of principal importance, one nationally endangered and 13 nationally scarce species. The site also supports more than 60 different plant species and a particular type of plant bug that was formerly considered extinct. The results of the project have now been put into the public domain to inform similar initiatives and to help other landowners and property developers.

Roger Tallowin of O&H Hampton said: “O&H Properties has a long-term approach to the careful stewardship of our natural resources. The Hamptons is recognised internationally for its nature reserves and its commitment to biodiversity. “But what we have now shown in the latest area of development is that it’s also possible to create a rich ecological environment from scratch which can then be moved in the future, if done in a responsible way. This is an important lesson for all landowners and developers. “In 2007 we started with a totally barren area of scraped clay and used it as a test site. We added many different grades of brick, gravel, wood and other recycled materials to replicate a brownfield site and then left nature to get on with it. With surveying and monitoring support from BSG and Buglife, we can now see the thriving ecosystem taking over. It proves our view: build it and nature will come.”

Thunderflies Hot humid days are the preserve of sudden plagues of small black winged insects creeping through closed windows and doors into our home. These are the thrips also known as thunder flies due to there association with the high humidity before a thunderstorm breaks or the less flattering picture frame flies because often they seem to find their way behind the glass but in front of the picture in picture frames at this time of year. Thrips in fact generally live on plants sucking at their sap, though a few predate smaller insects or live on fungi. In the right conditions they can

breed exponentially, in part because they are able to reproduce asexually, hence leading to these massive apparent invasions. Some thrips act as vectors for plant viruses. They do not bite humans but can be itchy crawling on skin giving the impression of biting. Some thrips actually provide pollination services whilst over 6,000 individual species have been identified globally. In most cases they lay their eggs either on or in plant tissue

farm land

One Million Pound

Areas of the Great Fen are being used for sphagnum moss growth, which has the capacity to act as a host to other plants, tomatoes for example.

Winning Pioneering

Project

Earlier this year at the People’s Postcode Lottery Dream Fund awards gala the Wildlife Trust in Cambridgeshire left with a £1m cheque The Water Works project (which beat more than 200 competitors to be one of only three funded projects in the UK) is a collaboration with partners Cambridgeshire ACRE, the University of East London and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and will be looking to pioneer a new form of wet farming based at the Trust’s Great Fen. This innovative project will be seeking to protect soil, clean water and prevent further peat erosion. Modern farming practices damage and consume one of the natural resources we all depend on for life: soil. In traditional farming in the UK 1,800 Olympic swimming pools of peat are lost annually due to farming, a clearly unsustainable loss, while 50% of CO2 emitted by farming comes from lowland peat soil.

The two year project has a wide scope to work with (initially) the micropropagation of plants, grasses and seeds for a whole new way of farming, with aims of a global reach. Working with academic and agricultural partners who bring cutting edge knowledge the project is harnessing innovative trials with plants - areas of the Great Fen are being

used for sphagnum moss growth, which has the capacity to act as a host to other plants, tomatoes for example. If trials are successful and can work on a commercial scale, they could be an alternative to dry land cereals – and if wet farming works here, in the driest part of the UK, it can work anywhere.

I’m Lisa, Farmer Tom’s wife. Tom is busy harvesting at the moment, so I’m excited to bring your updates throughout the summer months Well, harvest is upon us! The culmination of hundreds of hours of hard work and the sweat of our brow. Soon, the drums of the combine will call out to the wheat, barley, linseed and rapeseed like an old friend. We are ready for you. Everything is flourishing, flowering and rich here on the farm and in the countryside. We enjoy long evening walks on the farm pausing to watch as a vixen trots across the field in the mist of the evening dew. This is our time to chat about the day and tomorrow’s to-do list. These days, we are testing the wheat, biding our time until that peak moment when we bring out the combine again and traditional field teas are delivered to the harvest fields each afternoon at 4 pm sharp.

Hay is also a top priority and on many farms the lambs are weaned and turned onto the grass left after the hay has been taken. Farming is rewarding, but very challenging work and a true test of our resilience. With such little rain last year affecting our crops, we are happy to report that this year’s rainfall has been much more helpful. The weather can be a fickle friend, but also humbles us, really hammering home that we, like the wildlife all around us, we are at the mercy of the rain and sun from above. We must ensure profitable crops are grown while equally ensuring the wildlife will be given their best chance. Our latest accomplishment on the farm is a long strip of fallow land sown with wildflowers.

This was created in order to connect two wildlife areas so they can pass easily from one to the other. This 6-metre margin of land serves as a ‘beetle superhighway’ as well and we are truly excited about this! Coming into season this month in the UK be on the look-out for: aubergines, beetroot, blackcurrants, broad beans, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cherries, courgettes, cucumber, damsons, leeks, lettuce, loganberries, mushrooms, parsnips, peas, peppers, potatoes, plums, raspberries, redcurrants, runner beans, spring onions, strawberries, summer squash, sweetcorn, tomatoes, and watercress. And, as always, thank you for supporting British farmers!

Girlguiding Yaxley District Janice Osborn

We have had a fun term, a trip to Hunstanton on a lovely warm day and an Activity Day on a really hot one Both these events were attended by girls of all ages from 5 to 18 and a lot of effort went in to organising them – so thank you, you know who you are. I have visited most units this term to present certificates or help out when staff shortage occurred and saw some fantastic activities happening – 2 Units of Guides were building fires, I went for a rather dusty walk and played parachute games with Brownies. The Rangers have planned their summer trip to Camjam and put up their tent – and fixed a broken pole they found. Good luck to all the leaders in the District going off to University in September – Kathryn, Emily, Rebecca, Chloe and Skye. You will be missed and you leave big shoes to fill. We have already lost 2 other leaders since Christmas (Cat and Becca who both moved away) and I am also stepping down from my role at Holme Guides to concentrate on my Commissioner role. That’s over 30% of the leaders

going – so at risk of being repetitive I still need some new faces (or old ones, previously familiar ones…) to build up the numbers again, share the load and have loads of fun. Thank you and welcome to Wendy, Rachel and Sian who have recently joined us. Specifically, we are trying to add extra Unit helpers or Leaders in one Guide unit to accommodate some additional needs; this can be a 1:1 support role or a general extra body or two to help with activities, please email me if you would like to try this. If you could spare just an hour and half a week – every week or just occasionally - or maybe you were a leader once– do please get in touch! We need help now to continue giving girls of all ages an adventurous and safe programme. Don’t worry if you don’t have any experience. You simply have to be over 18, enthusiastic and happy to be DBS checked. Find out more on our website www.girlguiding.org

You can email me on janiceo.girlguiding@gmail.com or ring me on 01487 831451 if you would like to chat, or simply register as a volunteer on the website and I will contact you.

Holme Village Preschool Folksworth Preschool As the term draws to a close we would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last academic year. We have to say the preschool fete surpassed our expectations and was an amazing afternoon in the sun. It was wonderful to see our community come together to raise money to support the ongoing development of our preschool. So a huge thank you to everyone who came along, sponsored us, ran a stall or cooked a sausage. Your support is greatly appreciated. The preschool team would like to say good luck to those leaving us at the end of term, it’s been lovely to see you grow and develop. We are looking forward to a busy Autumn term with our new children Just a quick reminder to book your child’s place with us in the January and April term as places are limited.

The children at Holme Village Preschool, aged 2-4 years old, have had a wonderful time completing a sponsored scavenger hunt on a walk together around the local community. They had to find several items including: something green, something round, a twig, a flower and something pretty! The children worked really hard and raised over £300. This money will be used to update learning resources for the children, in particular the small world and construction toys. We are now enrolling for September 2019. We offer the option of traditional pre-school hours (9am – 3pm) and also extended all day hours (8.30am -5.30pm) to support our parents on Monday to Thursday. young gazette

younggazette William De Yaxley The academic year is fast coming to an end, and the term has positively flown by at William de Yaxley, where we have saved three of the best until last The first being our participation in the A1 Music Festival, at The Cresset (Bretton) on Wednesday 3 July. Our stunning Choir, resplendent in their striking yellow choir tops, joined other local school choirs (including Yaxley Infants School and Fourfields Community Primary School), who form the A1 Partnership of Schools to sing songs that celebrated friendship. Each choir sang a song that their own school had chosen, and also sang prerehearsed songs around this theme. William de Yaxley pupils sang Stand Together written by Jim Popoulis and even included a two part harmony, under the supportive and musical talent of Mrs Tew and Mrs White; who have helped the children to practice for the event over many lunchtimes! The event was well attended by family and friends and everyone agreed that the children were magnificent! The Second event - The A1 interschool sports competition was held at the Embankment on Friday 5 July, and was definitely well worth the wait. This annual event was attended by four of our local larger primary schools. The children from Key Stage Two pitched themselves against each other in a variety of track and field events including: 100 m sprint, 400m sprint, throwing events and the much anticipated team relay. There were some stunning performances, race techniques and personal bests achieved and all of the children who participated gave their all. This competition is

always fiercely contested and highly competitive, but always with great sportsmanship and integrity. In the most tightly fought competition of the past few years, and with only 5 points between first and second place - William de Yaxley pipped the other teams to the post and won overall! There were many congratulations when the team returned to school and they celebrated with a picnic lunch on the field - in the shade to cool down and then to have a team photo before heading back to class. Finally on Saturday 6 July, thanks to the great organisational skills and effort of our wonderful Friends of William de Yaxley parent group, we held our annual summer fete. Despite the occasional shower, which didn’t dampen spirits there was a superb turn out from local residents, pupils and their families. The Choir opened the event for us and we were also treated to displays of : Dance, Gymnastics, Zumba, Martial Arts and Baton Twirling. Stalls included representatives from local community groups such as: the Royal British Legion, the Community Allotments, Yaxley Detachment ACF and the Young People’s Counselling Service. The biggest draw of the crowd seemed to be the “Stocks” where members of staff bravely volunteered to have wet sponges thrown at them! What with the BBQ, Ice Cream Van and the delicious cream teas available, nobody needed to go home for lunch, and all stayed to help raise an amazing £1343.

Yaxley Infants Earlier in the year we were successful in securing a £10,000 National Lottery grant for outdoor equipment. Over the past few months we have talked with children about the trim trail through the school council and asked children what they would like in the playground. Using this information, we carefully planned the outdoor classroom to keep the existing features but to also make the environment more child friendly and exciting. Through the class forums children overwhelmingly chose balancing equipment they could climb and balance on. This would also give children the opportunity to develop gross motor skills. The EYFS curriculum prioritises

Physical Development as one of its Prime areas of learning. Already children have enjoyed using the equipment and it has been finished just in time to allow the new 2019 cohort a chance to test it out before September. We are now trying to recruit new governors for our delightful, family orientated small school. As a governor you would offer support to help with the running of the school. Governors’ meetings are termly and usually held in the evenings although some meetings can be during the school day. If you are interested in this rewarding role and want to give something back to the Yaxley community, then please give us a call on the number below.

If you are a prospective parent or would like more information about how to be a school governor, please call the school on 01733 240918 or Email: office@yaxley.cambs.sch.uk We look forward to meeting you.

inspire

inspire St Peter’s Church You may have seen in our social media recently the statistics around children in care in the UK. This year 40,000 children will be taken into care, that’s twice the amount that can be seated into the 02 arena! In Cambridgeshire there are currently over 700 children awaiting loving homes. Due to the circumstances around the need for adoption and fostering, many adoptive & foster parents face major challenges with children who have multiple difficulties, such as special educational needs, attachment disorders and insecurities. Therefore, parents can become physically and mentally exhausted; which is why a group of people from St. Peter’s Church are getting together to discuss ways in which we, as a community, can support these families who are doing something amazing. We will be guided by the charity, Home for Good, who’s core aim is to find a home for every child who needs one, but we also need help from the community. We are holding an initial meeting in September at SPC, to discuss ideas of what the support will look like and our hope and prayer is that this will also be guided by others in our community who want to be involved. If you are an adoptive or foster parent, please do come along and talk with us about how we can help support you. If, like many of us involved in this initiative, you’re not an adoptive or foster parent but it is on your heart – come along and chat, share ideas or just listen. Everyone has gifts to offer and we would like to use these gifts to provide the best support that we can for families in our community who are working hard to provide for children who otherwise would not have a loving family. We look forward to meeting you in September! Look out for the meeting date on our social media and on the Yaxley Gazette Facebook page and if you express an interest with us, we will ensure to inform you of the meeting details, once confirmed. If in the meantime you’d like to hear from the charity who will be assisting us, you can listen to their talk from their visit in June, on our website: https://www.saintpeters.co.uk/talks/home-for-good/ God Bless, Laura Laura Ashley, St. Peter’s Parish Communications Officer 07939 449255, lauraashley@saintpeters.co.uk

All Stars

history

history

Something special is happening in Yaxley which is against a national trend, as cricket clubs around the country merge or fold completely, our cricket club has been resurrected this summer with the successful introduction of All Stars Cricket, a scheme run by the ECB to give 5-8 year olds their first experience of cricket

By Dominic McMullan

lead the return of cricket

Cricket has been played in the village of Yaxley for over 100 years, however the earliest memory online of the cricket club is a picture of the clubs players in 1927 with the trophy as winners of division 2 of the Peterborough League. Another more recent image from 1952, shows the Yaxley Cricket Club players and officials lined up with a triple crown of the Jaidka Cup, Smith Barry Cup and the Head Cup, more interestingly the photo bares the names of everyone in the photo which should create some interest and some talking points from relatives and friends. Leading the drive to bring back cricket to the village is Dominic McMullan, who himself is a former Yaxley player, along with his brothers and his Father Michael McMullan

I was going to do it and what would be involved, a fair amount as it turned out. The club really has had to start with a blank sheet of paper, with no remaining infrastructure in place from when the old club folded back in 2015. I decided that after speaking to the local cricket board, and accepting a huge amount of their help, that we could run All Stars which has been very successful with 12 kids coming each Friday for group cricket sessions, more importantly their parents and sometimes grandparents have come down to watch and even get involved too which has been great. Cricket has always been about the people, and to see 25-30 people coming down on a Friday night for cricket is a great start and really pleasing to see, and I believe this is just the start.

“The club really has had to start with a blank sheet of paper, with no remaining infrastructure in place from when the old club folded back in 2015” who used to open the batting and also bowl left hand round the wicket spin. It was a moment last summer walking through the recreation ground, which led to a decision to do something to bring back the countries favourite summer sport to the village and to offer the parents and children of Yaxley the opportunity to play and get involved in cricket. So far, the club has been able to deliver the All Stars Cricket, which sees 5-8 year olds learning the basics of cricket including, catching, fielding, bowling and batting, on Friday nights at the recreation ground and there are now plans to expand this further to 1-2-1 coaching, the introduction of KwikCricket and also cricket for women and girls. Speaking to the Gazette about the club’s progress so far, Dominic McMullan said: “From the moment I decided to bring back cricket to the village, the work started on how

The reaction I get from people in the village I speak to about the return of the cricket club so far has been fantastic, I never realised there were so many cricket fans in Yaxley, and i’m sure that as the word continues to spread, more parents will bring their children to the club meaning they don’t need to travel outside the village for their children to play cricket.” The cricket club plans to hold a community cricket day in the village on Sunday 1 September, which will feature kids’ games, women and girls softball and a match between a team of former Yaxley players vs an invitational XI. The idea is to get as many people involved in playing as would like to, and to get as many people down to watch the cricket, set up a picnic with friends and family, have a drink and generally enjoy the environment that cricket offers, good times, with good friends and most importantly some cricket to watch.

Updates and more information are to follow, to keep in touch with the cricket club, search “Yaxley Cricket” on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, or send an email to yaxleycricket@gmail.com or call Dominic McMullan on 07557 134393.

Aged 10 - 18? Love performing? Be part of Vivacity’s 2019 Panto,

Beauty & the Beast On Sunday 15 September, children aged 10-18 can come and show off their singing, dancing and acting skills at the open auditions for this year’s kids’ chorus for Beauty & the Beast. Vivacity are looking for 3 enthusiastic teams of 10 children to perform between Thursday 5 December 2019 and Sunday 5 January 2020. This is a perfect opportunity for young performers to get early stage experience alongside a professional company and perform on the Key Theatre stage throughout the Christmas period.

The annual Key Theatre panto is unique throughout the region as it stars some of the country’s most talented actor-musicians; all singing, dancing and playing instruments live on stage. Successful chorus members will be able to stand alongside some of the best showmen and women in the country, many of whom have starred on the West End or in national touring theatre. Auditions take place on Sunday 15 September at the Key Theatre. Children aged 10-12 are welcome from 11am and ages 13-18 kick off from 2pm. Both will last approximately two hours. This is a great opportunity for aspiring actors and actresses to gain stage experience - but most importantly, make new friends and have a great time. Auditions are truly open to all with no previous experience required. You don’t have to be a member of a dance or drama club either - selections are made solely based on the audition on the day. Successful chorus

members will perform in 20 shows over the Christmas period. Parents from previous chorus members have said: “It was a great experience and really fun to do and perform.” “The cast and chaperones were amazing and they made [my daughter] feel welcome” “...right from the start it was obvious that the children were as important to the proceedings as anyone else.” Successful chorus members will join some of last year’s returning, popular and dynamic adult cast of actor musicians. Returning members include Fran Frenech, last year’s operatic pirate diva Dolores Smee as evil Wolf Queen; Rob Hazle, who will be known to Peterborough audiences as John in Peter Pan returns in the role of Chef JeanPaul. Plus Key Theatre stalwart Robin Johnson (Abanazar in Aladdin, King Rat in Dick Whittington) returns to play Belle’s father – Monsieur deDum deDum deDum.

To sign up, go to vivacity.org/auditions or pick up a paper form from the Key Theatre.

paws for thought

When it’s NOT a dog’s dinner

Here, we reveal some foods that dogs shouldn’t be allowed to eat and why … Chocolate Dark chocolate is even worse than the milkier variety. Chocolate contains methylxanthines and theobromine which could mess up a canine’s insides by causing vomiting, diarrhoea and excessive urination, panting and thirst, an abnormal heartbeat, seizures or even death. Alcohol Alcohol can have similar effects to chocolate and also cause abnormal blood acidity, central nervous system depression, decreased coordination or even coma in dogs. Grapes and raisins Scientists have been unable to identify the toxic substance contained in grapes and raisins, but it’s known they could cause kidney failure and shouldn’t be fed to dogs. Milk and Other Dairy Products On a hot day, it may be tempting to share your ice cream with your dog. Instead, give her some cold water. Milk and milk-based products can cause diarrhoea and other digestive problems for your pup. They can also trigger food allergies, which can cause your dog to itch. High fat, high calorie food can be bad for pets and if eaten excessively can lead to lots of other health problems. Most cheeses are also very salty, meaning eating too much could eventually bring on heart disease or stroke in your dog. Raw/Undercooked Meat, Eggs and Bones Raw meat and raw eggs can contain bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli that can be harmful to pets

and humans. Raw eggs contain an enzyme called avidin that decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin), which can lead to skin and coat problems. Feeding your pet raw bones may seem like a natural and healthy option that might occur if your pet lived in the wild. Feeding raw bones can be very dangerous for your pet who might choke on bones, or sustain a grave injury should the bone splinter and get lodged in or puncture your pet’s digestive tract. Onion Chemicals in onions can cause dogs’ red blood cells to rupture or reduce how effectively they can carry oxygen around their body, whether the vegetable is cooked or raw.

lead to a drop in your dog’s blood sugar and can also cause liver failure. Early symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and coordination problems. Eventually, your dog may have seizures. Liver failure can happen within just a few days. If you are brushing your dog’s teeth make sure you use dog friendly toothpaste. Avocado Avocados contain something called persin. It’s fine for people who aren’t allergic to it. But too much might cause vomiting or diarrhoea in dogs. Persin is in the leaves, seed, and bark, as well as the fruit. Also, the avocado seed can become stuck in the intestines or stomach, and obstruction could be fatal. Tea and Coffee

Ready meals Excessive salt can harm dogs just like humans. It could cause increased thirst, raise blood pressure, or even sodium ion poisoning in pets, so it’s best not to let them lick your plate after you’ve had a ready meal or other high salt foods like crisps and processed snacks.

A tiny sip or two is unlikely to do major damage but drinking too much of a morning cuppa could be lifethreatening for dogs so it’s best to keep your pet away from hot beverages. Caffeine could be very harmful to your dog as it’s a methylxanthine, like the chemicals found in chocolate.

Nuts

Garlic

Almonds, cashews, pecans, pistachios and other nuts are packed full of fats and oils that could lead to diarrhoea, vomiting and pancreatitis in dogs. Macadamias meanwhile can cause a range of other problems in pets too, including weakness, tremors, depression and even hypothermia.

Like onions, garlic contains chemicals that can damage red blood cells and negatively affect dogs’ overall health, raw or cooked. Olive oil

Xylitol Used as a sweetener in a range of products including chewing gum, toothpaste and baked desserts, xylitol can cause insulin release in dogs and potentially

Like most oils, olive oil is high in both fat and calories and could therefore cause harmful weight gain in dogs if lots is given to them over time. It may also cause digestive problems for pets and lead to vomiting or diarrhoea if consumed in excessive amounts.

If you suspect your dog has eaten any of the above, please note the amount ingested and contact your vet for advice.

A tick looking for a host

paws for thought

pawsforthought This is what a tick looks like after a blood feed

Ticks What are ticks?

Ticks are parasitic arachnids which feed on blood. They wait on the edge of the vegetation for an animal or person to pass. When they find a ‘host’ they embed their head into the skin, attaching firmly, and feed on blood. When they first jump on, ticks are quite small (around 3mm long) so are hard to see, but as they fill up on their blood meal they can grow up to 600 times their size!

Where are ticks found? Ticks are usually found in long grass and woodland areas (but can be anywhere) throughout the UK. There are a number of particular ‘hotspots’ such as Thetford Forest, Wales, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands. But don’t let your guard down, experts believe tick numbers are increasing each

While we enjoy these warmer months, it’s worth remembering that many creepy-crawlies enjoy it too. Although they’re actually around all year round, many parasites are out in force through the summer (and we don’t just mean fleas!). They’re a menace to us and our pets and some can carry serious disease putting us in danger. Ticks are one of these creatures. year and new tick species are emerging in the UK because of the ease of international travel.

1. Use effective prescription tick treatments for your pet from your vets regularly

Why are ticks a danger?

2. Check your dog’s skin for ticks (particularly around the head, neck and legs) after walks especially after being in long grass or wooded areas.

A tick’s bite can cause irritation, infection, abscesses and skin reactions. But worse than that, because they feed on blood, they can easily transmit disease such as Lyme Disease and Babesiosis. Both these extremely serious and debilitating diseases can infect people as well as our cats and dogs. A study in 2015 of an area in the southern UK found that 67% of ticks carried Lyme Disease – that’s a scary statistic!

What do you need to do? Prevention is key. The risk of disease transmission can be significantly reduced by removing/killing the biting tick as soon as possible.

3. Don’t forget to check your cat’s skin for ticks regularly too 4. Remove ticks with a special tick hook with a twisting motion to ensure the head is removed also (if you just pull, the head can stay embedded in the skin and cause infection). For professional advice about ticks and preventative healthcare for your pet, please speak to your Vet. Cromwell Vets 01480 814789.

After your treatment any areas with baldness will have disappeared, a new hairline will have been created and your treatment areas will be covered with the illusion of hair follicles, giving a ‘shaved’ or ‘buzzed’ hairstyle; a look that will never go out of fashion! Scalp micropigmentation is nonsurgical, has immediate results, is scar free and no drugs are needed to complete the treatment. It is excellent for bringing back your hairline to its natural position, creating a new receding position or filling in thin gaps between your hair. Once the treatment is completed it can make you look younger, helps to bring back your confidence and you will be walking out of the clinic with a beaming smile!

Male pattern baldness of the crown affects a lot of men here in the UK. After your first treatment your crown will look more dense giving a natural look of a shaved head. Density will then be added over your second and third treatments. Complete baldness: this treatment will transform you making you look younger; some clients can look up to 10 years younger after the full treatment. The hairline is completely redesigned giving you either a natural look or a fuller hairline which is completely your choice. Please look through some hair lines or at images of yourself before you lost your hair. We can also treat clients who have had hair transplants to camouflage the scarring that is left. The most treated scar is from hair transplants leaving what is called a donor scar at the back of the head. However any sort of scar can be treated to camouflage it back in with the hair. I can't wait to tattoo your head!

Don’t use the same cover letter for every single job. If you send identical cover letters for every single role, it may save you time, but it won’t get you the job. Generic phrases which offer no specificity about the company, industry, or role you’re applying for indicate lack of interest to most hiring managers. Always refer to the job by its title and description and explain how your skills could benefit the specific role and company, not just the industry as a whole.

Never talk about your personal life in a professional document This definitely won’t improve your employability. Don’t mention the reasons for leaving your current job or give overly detailed justifications for career breaks. Keep to the point and focus on the job you’re applying for.

Focus on what the employer wants, not what you want.

Avoid detailing your hopes and dreams and don’t explain what you’d get out of the job. A cover letter isn’t about being able to fulfil your objectives, it’s about proving to a recruiter than you can fulfil theirs. So, talk about your achievements, skills, and experience only if they relate directly to the role and emphasise what they would get from employing you, not vice versa. If you lack experience in a certain area don’t focus on that, instead focus on your strong points which are a good fit for the job.

Desperation is different to enthusiasm! Begging for the job isn’t going to add anything to your selling potential. Keep over-the-top adjectives and hyperbole to a minimum because there’s a fine line between showing a genuine interest and trying too hard. Don’t forget to proofread and check for grammatical errors.

HAMPTON LIBRARY Job Club Thinking about taking that next step in your career? Maybe you’re looking at getting back into work? Hampton’s job club runs every Friday 9:30 -11am and can help you polish your CV and find the job you’ve been looking for!

5 top tips to get you started Kerry McQuade Heartland Mortgage Services

See a mortgage advisor to check your affordability It’s important you know how much you can borrow and buy a property for, to make sure you don’t view and fall in love with a home you can’t afford!

Access your credit file Use services such as Experian and give the report to your mortgage advisor, who will then recommend the options available to you.

Create a viewing plan At Heartland, we work with our clients to create a viewing strategy which ensures that they are viewing a range of houses and that the one they buy is right for them.

Need to sell? Get your home on the market! Many people will be looking at Rightmove daily, waiting for their dream home to come onto the market. Unfortunately, this often means that they miss out as it is sold to someone who has already sold their property, or is more ready to proceed. Get yourself sold and in the strongest position possible for someone to accept your offer – your home may well be someone else’s dream home and just what they have been waiting for!

Understand the costs Costs to move vary from person to person. At Heartland, we offer this as part of the process, so you are in an informed position from day one!

HMRC have published an updated list of mortgage providers and lenders who accept a SA302 tax calculation and a tax year overview. Although the recent update is only minor - the Cambridge Building Society has been added to the list - this provides an opportunity to remind readers about this list and where to find it. Many mortgage providers and other lenders have agreed with HMRC that, as evidence of income the lenders will accept tax calculations and tax year overviews that taxpayers or agents have printed from commercial software or online tax accounts. The list relates to the documentation needed as evidence of income in a loan or mortgage application. This list can be found at https://bit.ly/2RQu3uE

By Eileen Le Voi,

Safe Local Trades & Service

www.safelocaltrades.com

Summer's here – and whatever the weather, us Brits love our barbecues!

USEFUL NUMBERS Yaxley Police

Stay safe this BBQ season A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. If this sounds like your ideal BBQ (and what’s not to love?) then don’t allow anything to spoil it. The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were: • Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame – 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200 The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure you BBQ is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. To protect you, family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be firesafety savvy.

And it’s not just BBQs that can cause an outdoor hazard: • Ensure all lanterns and candles with a naked flame are fully extinguished when you leave the garden. • Never leave children unattended in or near inflatable pools or similar if they contain water. The same applies to garden ponds. Take care also when visiting other people’s gardens - children can drown in less than 3cm of water. • Clear away unused garden hoses and tools – which can be easily tripped over. • And finally, protect and secure your home and garden by securely locking back gates, sheds, garages and windows on balmy evenings.
