Registration now open for Thorpe Hall’s Starlight Hike It’s time to dust off your trainers, grab a friend and get registered for this year’s Thorpe Hall Hospice Starlight Hike.

fter a year’s break, the popular fundraising event is back in the calendar, on Saturday, August 8, with a new look, a new route and a lots of new reasons to get involved. For those looking for a challenge there’s a 10km route taking in some of Peterborough’s prettiest parkland. For those keen to take the more leisurely option, or maybe looking for a family challenge, there’s a 5km circuit available. Both routes will start and finish at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough; with the start scheduled for early evening so walkers return for their triumphant finish down Thorpe Hall’s stunning drive as the sun sets. There will be a warm-up to get those feet moving before the starting pistol is fired, and entertainment along the marshalled route to keep the motivation levels high. There’ll be a barbecue in the beautiful gardens of Thorpe Hall

Hospice and activities to keep the supporters busy while the walkers are on route. All the money raised at this year’s Starlight Hike will help pay for the services in the new Thorpe Hall Hospice, which will welcome patients from the start of July. Thorpe Hall’s senior event fundraiser Jo Killick said: “We’re thrilled to have the Starlight Hike back on our events calendar and delighted that, this year, we will be able to start and finish at Thorpe Hall. Walking down the drive as the sun sets to be welcomed by staff and patients will, we’re sure, make it a really memorable occasion.” The event is open to all ages including children. It costs just £15 to enter with all entrants receiving a must-have Starlight Hike t-shirt to wear during the event. Walkers are asked to raise £100 through sponsorship.

Yaxley Food Bank opens There has been a significant increase in the number of people using food banks, both locally and nationally, in the past years.

here are many reasons why people will need to use a food bank. A change in circumstances, illness or a change in benefits are just some of the factors. Food banks are designed to offer temporary and early support for individuals and families who cannot afford to purchase food for any reason. Research has shown that the school summer holidays can

be a particularly difficult time as children do not get a meal at school. Therefore, we are very pleased to be able to open the Yaxley Food Bank just before the summer holidays â&#x20AC;&#x201C; on 13 July. In order to receive a food parcel you will need a voucher, which you can obtain from various places â&#x20AC;&#x201C; see notice right for details. If you or anyone you know needs a food parcel please do use this food bank.

Can you help? Yaxley resident, Michelle Lay, is appealing for any witnesses to an accident on 27 May, in which her dog Lily was seriously injured by a passing car. Apparently the driver initially stopped, but then drove off with the dog still under it.

ichelle feels that the accident would have been less serious had the driver stopped. Lily has been in Queen’s Cambridge Dog Hospital for the past two weeks and it will be a slow recovery. Michelle told us that she would like to thank the residents of Yaxley who have left so many caring messages on the Yaxley Gazette Facebook Page. Michelle has also received many offers to help with the vet’s fees, which she doesn’t feel comfortable accepting. fter such a positive first half of the 20142015 season, the first team’s performance dropped off late on. This culminated in a defeat to Godmanchester in the Hunts FA Cup final back in mid- May. The management team have reacted to this with a flurry of ins and outs as the club looks to build on a top five league position. Phil Stebbing has arrived from Peterborough Nothern Star along with Stuart Wall from Southern Prem side Histon. Callum Reed, well known in the village, rejoins along with Deaken Napier from Soham. Manager Brett Whaley is desperate to bring a trophy to In2itive Park, and along with this first team recruitment, comes the development pathway from U21s to U23s. Many youngsters in the village will already

be involved in making their way from the junior section into the seniors with a long term ambition of playing first team football at the club. As any Yaxley fan will tell you, it’s important we have as many home grown players in the team as possible, and this is the best way of doing it. Elsewhere there have been significant wins for a number of junior teams. The U10s won their cup before hammering a Chelsea FC academy side 12-0. We have had numerous other top three places include the U15 Lynx side who have been in brilliant form. As well as developing a route for young male players, we are delighted to announce the launch of a ladies and girls section of the club for next season. The Kimbolton Country Fayre O

n Sunday 12 July the annual Kimbolton Country Fayre returns once more to the glorious grounds of Kimbolton Castle; the last place of confinement for Catherine of Aragon, first wife of Henry VIII. The Fayre is the largest gathering of classic and performance cars in the east of England. It’s a one day show far all the family, with a fun fair, thrilling show ring events, music from the live stage, stalls and entertainment as well as the usual tea tent, real ale bar, plus many more attractions and activities for the whole family. This will be the 23rd event and is set to once again entertain all across the 60-acre site. New this year is The Fire Queen, which can only be described as a spectacular and nail-biting experience. After its debut two years ago, Millers Ark Pet Zoo returns with its many animals to see, stroke or ‘cuddle’. Also returning this year is Royston, the children’s entertainer. New for this year is the AstroGlide, providing an exhilarating experience for both young and not so young. There are still old favourites such as the Duston German Shepherd Dog team and Lord John Robartes Regiment of Foote and Horse. As one of the largest Country Fayres in the area you will find it packed with an amazing range of entertainment. 700 classic cars,

Main show ring events from Noon accompanied by their owners, over 80 stall holders, stage and ring events, music from the Galaxy Swing Band, dancing and various rides, to mention a few. The Fayre attracts attendees who make the journey to Kimbolton every year from all over the country.

Last year we were able to distribute just under £15,000 to local charities and this year we hope to do at least the same supporting Sailability, East Anglian Children’s Hospice, Burns Camp, Samuel Pepys, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Burns Camp and Hemi Help. We look forward to welcoming you on the day!

Question: I’ve been told I can pay my self-assessment tax online instead of sending a cheque or making a payment to HMRC at the Post Office or my local bank? Answer: Yes you can – HMRC has enhanced its online payment service, which now accepts credit Visa and MasterCard and debit card payments for not only self-assessment, but VAT and Corporation Tax. Taxpayers can find this service at the www.gov.uk website and by following the links are transferred to new payment screens, operated by Worldpay. HMRC has said their ‘customers’ have told them they are happy with the service, and they are making further improvements by listening and acting on the feedback. The service will soon accept Employers PAYE, Stamp Duty Land Tax and some miscellaneous payments by credit and debit card, and will eventually replace Billpay. Tax Tip – Pre-Letting Property Expenses: Expenses may be incurred on a property before the first rental receipt is received (for example, travel, phone, advertising, etc.). If so, a deduction may be possible once the letting starts. Relief is only allowable under these special rules where the expenditure is: ■ incurred within a period of seven years before the date the rental income actually starts; and is not otherwise allowable as a deduction for tax purposes (i.e. against any other income or capital); and ■ would have been allowed as a deduction if it had been incurred after the rental business started. Letting expenditure incurred pre-commencement is treated as having been incurred on the day on which the rental income starts and then added to other allowable letting expenses incurred during the tax year. This total amount is then deducted from the total letting receipts for that year. The expenses must not be for the purchase of capital items. Capital expenditure is potentially deductible but there are separate rules of calculation. Costs incurred in relation to the actual purchase of the property, including legal fees, are a capital cost allowed against the proceeds of the eventual disposal of property under the capital gains tax rules.

One Sunday in June we held a Songs of Praise Service. Everyone chose a hymn or a reading which meant something special to them and what a wonderful, moving service it was.

eople asked if we could arrange a service like this again as it was so inspirational. Methodists are well known for their singing, and when you think every hymn is actually a prayer, we do pray a lot. I for one was singing my and my grandaughter’s choices for a couple of weeks before the event, and those chosen by others after the event. There are many modern hymns with catchy tunes, as well as the traditional ones, and they have very

relevant words for the world today. St Peter’s Church You’ll all have heard people say that the part of the world we live in is flat and not very interesting. We know they’re wrong. I stood at the top of the hill in Church Street recently and watched several hundred of the 5,000 cyclists come up that hill.

’m certain that they would argue with those who say there are no hills here. In early May we went for a short walk in Holme Fen. I’m embarrassed to admit that this was the first time we’d been there despite having lived here for six years. It was really beautiful with the sun shining on the bark of the silver birches and the grass was an amazing and really vivid green. This part of the world is incredibly beautiful and far from flat, despite what the scoffers would say. I’m sure that we’ve all heard people say to us that Christianity is ‘flat and not very interesting’ or words to that effect. It’s all about following rules isn’t it? NO, it isn’t. The image Jesus uses most to describe the Kingdom of Heaven is a party or a banquet. I’ve mentioned this at several baptism services recently and people afterwards have asked me about this. Is that really right? Yes, it is. Jesus himself told us that he came to earth so that we might live an

abundant life not one constrained by rules. May I invite all of you to come to St Peter’s, or other local churches, this summer and discover for yourself that following Jesus is neither flat nor uninteresting. I am pleased to be able to let you know that the Yaxley Food Bank, which I mentioned a couple of months ago, opens on Monday 13 July at St Peter’s. This will be open every Monday and Thursday from 3-6pm. In order to obtain a food parcel you will need a voucher which you can get from Linda Smith at the Health Centre and various other agencies. The press is full of articles about who got the ‘City Apartment’ or ‘Villa in Marbella’, but what about the less glamorous, but often more valuable asset – the pension? When couples divorce, the Court must consider all of the assets, including the available pension provision. In many cases, other than the home, the biggest asset is a pension, especially if one party has worked in the public sector or has a final salary scheme pension. Quite often, one party has a greater pension provision than the other, particularly if one partner has spent time out of the workplace looking after the children. The Court has three main options in dealing with pensions upon divorce:

v Offsetting – the pension owner keeps their pension and the other retains another asset i.e. house or savings

v Attachment orders – the pension remains in the name of the owner but the other ‘flags’ a share of the pension to become payable to them when the pension owner retires

Change of practice clinical computer system

New Registrations

The practice will be changing its clinical computer system from Vision to SystmOne on Tuesday 11 August. The new system will bring new functionality and interoperability, benefiting both patients and staff. This will be a major project for the practice team and we ask for your help, support and patience during July and August. Some of our services will be stopped or interrupted, such as on-line repeat prescriptions, on-line appointments, registrations, electronic transfer of notes and prescriptions.

Practice contacts and repeat prescriptions

YGP will not be able to process any new patient registrations from 3 August until post migration. Any registration forms and accompanying documentation taken during this period will be held until after migration, when it will be entered onto the new system. During this period, patients requiring medical attention will need to go either to their previous GP surgery or visit a local Urgent Care Centre. We wish to ask for your support and co-operation during this period of transition whilst the doctors and staff become familiar and confident with the new clinical system. Please bear with us during this period of change as it may take us a little longer to deal with requests.

Please avoid non-urgent contacts with the practice between Monday 3 August and Tuesday 11 August. Please use repeat prescription ordering form on our website instead (https://yaxleygp.secure-gpsite.nhs. uk/repeat-prescriptions,28431.htm).Unfortunately it is not possible to migrate the existing VOS accounts to the new system, therefore patients who wish to use SystmOne Online Services will have to re-register once we are live on the new system (after 17 August 2015). Registration information for the new online system will be available on our website in due course.

Make your own

ice cream!

Whilst ice-cream vans may be a seasonal delight, the confection itself is of course readily available from our supermarkets all year round in an astonishing array of different flavour combinations. But it has to be said there’s nothing quite like the home-made variety and all you need is an ice cream maker!

firm favourite is real vanilla ice-cream made with a rich home-made egg custard infused with seeds from a vanilla pod. It’s delicious on its own, but it also makes basic desserts such as fruit crumble or cinnamon-baked bananas into something special. In addition, you can incorporate all sorts of extras to add different flavours and textures: small pieces of good quality caramel or fudge, a marbling of raspberry purée, chopped strawberries, slivers of stem ginger, or even finely-chopped chilli with chocolate. And for a luscious, grown-up, boozy version, try adding whisky and a little Manuka honey – go steady with any alcohol though, as it slows down the freezing process quite considerably. Experimenting with flavours is great fun, and well worth the effort. However, if you’re

in a hurry, the following is a very speedy vanilla ice-cream using good quality ready-made custard from the supermarket chiller cabinet: it takes about 15 minutes from start to finish!*

500g tub vanilla custard (e.g. ‘Taste the Difference’ or ‘Finest’) 300ml carton double cream 2-3 tbsp icing sugar (sifted) 1-2 tsp vanilla extract (not essence)

Whisk everything together in a large jug, then pour into the ice-cream maker following the manufacturer’s instructions. Process until the volume increases and the desired consistency is achieved. A delicious accompaniment to nectarines baked in a little dessert wine and sprinkled with crushed amaretti biscuits. *Recipe suitable for machines with a 1.4 litre capacity. Reduce quantities for smaller machines.

In May 2014 we supported the Yaxley Festival, not only with sponsorship of the stage and the venues, but our workforce helped with preparation and clear up throughout the weekend festival. Again it was great to see Yaxley people enjoying the range of activities over the weekend, our thanks go to the organisers and we were pleased to play a small part in their success. I am pleased to say that Cllr Roger Lucas, representing the parish, was successful in his presentation to Cambridgeshire Highways, in wining our application for a safe pedestrian crossing point at the start of Broadway. Work on this crossing should start soon.

Chairman Andrew Wood After the departure of our clerk and assistant clerk early last year, we were very fortunate to see Helen Taylor join our ranks as full time clerk. Her experience and 18

within the office and council, thank you Helen. Another addition has been bookkeeper Bev Porter. If you have seen our website, you will clearly see the improvements to our financial reporting. Well done Bev. You may also have noted two new faces on our workforce, Peter Marchant and Ray Allen. They are part of the ground maintenance team comprising of Graham Hill, Mark Maltby, Peter North and Jason Thorne. Sue Marchant manages our bookings and the facilities team of Beryl Maltby and Olive Lenaghan. Our workforce continues to rise to all challenges in helping reduce costs and benefit the community. More recently undertaking new training to add more skills. My personal appreciation therefore goes out to our workforce whose motivation and dedication in helping with the changes that are required to bring improvements to the Parish of Yaxley are essential. It was sad to report that Tony Maltby, one of our experienced ground maintenance team, passed away during this year. He was a valued member of our workforce and is still missed by all. A sad loss for Yaxley Parish Council.

Community Amenity Chairman Graham Bellamy

The installation of new, and refurbishment of existing, bus shelters, bins and benches continues, the latest new bus shelter being in Church Street. I’m sure many of you will have seen the upgrade to the footpath around the church. This work was completed by a parishioner with a passion for the church and Yaxley. He also led a group of volunteers, comprising parishioners, councillors and the church, who, working with the council, have helped to develop the Spinney, off Pound Lane, from an inaccessible area into an area that is open for

enjoy. Additional work carried out in this area has been to link through the two car parks and move the exit further along Church Street, aiding visibility, and therefore improving safety when exiting the area. This helps prove what a few dedicated villagers can achieve. More recently this group have expanded into improving footpaths and bridleway routes for people to enjoy. My personal thanks go to all that have had a hand in making these improvements happen, especially Des Watt, whose passion, not only for the church, but for Yaxley and its people, and his leadership and foresight have made these changes happen. Tree maintenance has been a great factor this year and with the onset of Ash Dieback we are to commence a program of replanting in public areas. This committee is also responsible for the cemeteries, play areas, equipment and allotments. So as you can see a very busy committee.

Chairman Rodney Butcher Energy surveys and safety inspections have highlighted areas for improvement and cost saving in all buildings. This work has commenced and will be ongoing into next year. Structural surveys have highlighted areas for maintenance to buildings in need of repair. This work will be ongoing again into next year. We have renewed various machines and tools, the main being the purchase of a new Kubota mower and tools to allow some maintenance work to be taken in house again, reducing expenditure. Work continues through the year decorating our facilities to the benefit of users.

Our planning committee continues to strive to ensure plans are in keeping with the needs of the village aspects. This committee meeting every two weeks and attends district meetings when required.

Going forward

Having seen what a few volunteers in the village can do for the village I would like to extend this into the coming years, where we can have teams working with the council to develop plans for areas for the masses to enjoy. So if you have time and are looking for a project, or have an idea for a local scheme you think would help others within the community, please come along to any of the council meetings, or forward a letter to the clerk with your ideas. While we may not be able to do all, some may be low cost and easy to implement. Yaxley Parish Council will continue to support the Norman Cross Action Group to get the best for our communities from the Great Haddon project. They are currently looking to get alterations to the Great Haddon Loop, which will affect all A15 commuters if the plans come to fruition. We are continuing to work to ensure Yaxley has a direct access into The Great Fen as we believe this will bring commercial, leisure and educational benefits into Yaxley’s community. The council is working alongside Fenland Trust to develop schemes within Yaxley, more recently a pre-feasibility study commissioned by the Fenland Trust, for the Festival Park development. This is being carefully considered by the council, in line with the needs of the village, and to ensure sustainability of the project, while maintaining viability of existing venues within the village.

Fourfields School

ll members of the Fourfields community had to put their brains to the test during the course of our maths week. The week started with a bang and children were delighted to see their teachers having fun with maths whilst competing for their house teams in a quiz. Then came a challenging afternoon of problem solving where many parents were involved in working alongside their children to solve a variety of problems. Of course, the children did not escape, and over the week enjoyed applying a range of their mathematical skills, on maths trails, a mental maths house challenge and a fantastic workshop delivered by NRich, to name just a few! The teachers were most impressed with the high levels of engagement from the children and their absolute determination to solve the problems! The school and ‘Friends of Fourfields’ are celebrating another successful Summer Fayre, which was extremely well attended, and raised in the region of £1,700 towards our school library bus.

Yaxley Infants The weather was kind and the great variety of stalls and activities meant there was something for everyone. The children are now preparing themselves for the many summer sporting events. The competition between houses is becoming ever fiercer as sports day approaches and everyone is looking forward to seeing the different year groups enjoying their races.As the end of the school year approaches, we would like to thank all members of the local community who have supported our school throughout this school year with a special mention to our parents who, either individually, or as part of Friends of Fourfields, or as governors, help make Fourfields fabulous for our children. www.fourfields.cambs.sch.uk

his week the Foundation Stage children and staff braved the elements for their school trip. Despite the rain, they excitedly boarded the coach bound for Huntingdon Garden Centre. Once inside the children looked at the different areas in the garden centre, finding the indoor and outdoor plants, seeds and bulbs, fish and pets. Luckily the sun came out just in time as the next stop was Hinchingbrooke Country Park. A quick break for lunch and they were raring to go again. The children spent the afternoon exploring the woods and making dens. They arrived back at school tired but happy after a very busy, fun filled day. “My favourite part of the day was being on the upstairs of the bus.” Lexie

“I liked the rabbits. They were eating cabbage.” Ava Elsewhere in school, the Year One children shared their ‘Exciting Ending’ with their parents. The children amazed them with the facts that they had learnt about sea creatures, showed their detailed observational drawings and had everyone tapping along to their song ‘There was a cod’, complete with hats to represent all the characters in the song. To finish they gave a lively performance of their innovated story ‘The three friendly sea creatures’. It was lovely to see how much the children had learnt and their love of learning shone through. We were also pleased to see so many parents, siblings and grandparents joining us to find out what the children had been learning.

olksworth Preschoolers have had a wonderful time looking at different occupations this term with a welcome visit from a nice policeman who kindly gave up his day off to show the children his car and equipment. The children thoroughly searched his car, even requesting a look in the boot. They had the siren mastered in minutes and spread mucky feet all over the seats whilst trying to seatbelt themselves in too. A big thank you from us all.

We have also spent time preparing for big school and transitions into new schools and are all very excited for the next phases to come. Together we have studied the cycle of a frog and butterfly and are equipped with the knowledge of their transitions. We have enacted this through dance, music and expression. The children have continued to work hard as they complete the final phonic letters and begin to blend sounds into some smaller words successfully.

Holme Village Pre School

his month the children have been taking part in activities based around healthy eating and their bodies. They had the chance to make wholemeal bread and some yummy carrot and coriander soup. Great fun was had painting with vegetables, playing with cornflakes and jelly and drawing selfportraits, as well our usual activities such as sand, water and crafts too. We are making the most of the sun (while itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s here) and spending lots of time in our lovely outside area too. The Pre-school have been very lucky to have had some caterpillars donated to them to look after, so the children have been feeding them and checking to see how they have changed. They observed them change from wiggly caterpillars to chrysalis and then recently they emerged as beautiful butterflies. The children who are transitioning to school in September have been busy working on their writing and drawing skills and taking part in mini PE lessons. The children have been enjoying the lovely weather and resolving pre-set and self chosen challenges/problems using guttering, pipes, blocks, cars, etc. We would like to welcome some new faces to the pre-school, the older ones have made them feel very welcome and helped to settle them in.Â From September we will be doing a rising fives session on a Wednesday afternoon. The opening hours for September will be a breakfast club 8-9am and an after school club which will both need to booked in advance. Pre-school will still be 9am-3pm. o, why launch this additional scheme? The answer is simple, getting the neutering message across is a tough hurdle for cat welfare and the vast majority of people are not neutering their cats early enough to avoid unwanted cats and kittens. Cats can start breeding from as young as four months of age. Without neutering, the UK’s cat population quickly gets out of control and each summer as a charity we are overwhelmed with kittens in need of homes. Last year we saw the numbers of abandoned pregnant stray cats soar, and unwanted kittens were at an all-time high. 80 per cent of these were under a year old, a gym slip mum, little more than kittens themselves.

Cats are prolific breeders, one unneutered female can produce 18 kittens a year and can be responsible for 20,000 descendants in just five years. So, it’s easy to see how the problem can escalate. In 2014 the branch neutered in excess of 800 cats and this year the calls reporting pregnant strays came much sooner than we had anticipated. A heavily pregnant stray came into our branch on 19 January and the first litter of 2015 were born days later. And the calls have not stopped since. As a charity we recognise the need to both educate and help Peterborough cat owners who for whatever reason have not had their cat neutered.

Cromwell Vet Nurse saving cats abroad Student veterinary nurse Nat is one of the biggest fans of cats anywhere. She shares her home with eight cats, all of which are rescues. The latest addition arrived in December last year after Nat fell in love with him while she was volunteering abroad. Leon lived on the Greek island of Skiathos and was wandering the streets with a broken leg until he was taken in by Skiathos Cat Welfare Association.

he charity cares for around 300 stray cats on the island. They have feeding stations in numerous locations around the island and they also catch and neuter as many cats as they can to try to keep the population under control. With so many stray cats, illness and disease is easily spread and it’s almost inevitable that some get injured. Many cats, like Leon, require urgent veterinary care and the charity provides this. The charity relies totally on donations and volunteers to do their work and this is where Nat has been involved. Nat (who’s also studying for her Certificate in Feline Nursing) has been helping cats abroad for a few years and last year she went to Skiathos for the first time. In August this year she is returning to help the charity with their valuable work. Skiathos Cat Welfare Association. 1 Bank scam emails A few pieces of key information may be all the scammers need to get into your account. Emails often say there’s a problem with your account, and ask you to update your account details, either by email or by clicking on a link. Never click on a link in an email. Call your bank or go directly to your bank’s official website.

2 PayPal scam emails PayPal emails are definitely on the increase. A legitimate email from PayPal won't ask you for sensitive information such as your password, bank account or credit card details, nor will it have attachments or ask you to download/install any software.

3 Tax rebate scam The HMRC was notified of almost 75,000 scam emails between April and September 2014, and they were only the ones that were reported! Promising a tax rebate, such emails often ask for key information including account numbers and passwords to make the payment. HMRC never asks for bank details via email.

4 Scam emails purporting to be from HMRC Other HMRC scam emails can take several forms – a mistake on a self-assessment form, or that a tax notice has been issued. You may be asked to verify your identity by providing a copy of your passport. Never respond to these emails or provide a copy of your ID. For queries, contact HMRC directly for advice.

5 Scam emails seeking money for services or help Emails asking for money for services or help continue to be prevalent. Scammers are constantly refining this technique, which will often prey upon the most vulnerable with desperate pleas for aid or offers of low investment and high return. What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of hay fever vary from person to person, with some people only having mild symptoms that tend to come and go, whilst others are more severely affected with symptoms present every day. Symptoms include a runny, itchy and/or blocked nose, with sneezing and itchy eyes. Sometimes the sinuses and throat can also be affected. If you had asked me a few months ago what was behind the Vicarage at the end of Pound Lane I would have told you that there was a scruffy overgrown area with a few trees and some dirty stagnant water. Ingrid and I called this area “the swamp” because of all the mosquitoes which live there. Now, following an initiative involving Des Watt, Reg Bingham, Kevin Gulson and the Parish Council and members of St Peter’s – huge thanks to you all – this area has been transformed. Some of the trees have been pruned, the stream and pond have been cleared, pathways have been added, plants and bulbs have been planted. Because the water is flowing again the mosquito population Drewdecreased! Pontikis The area is now full of light and I look forward to hasby greatly seeing the Spinney being developed for the enjoyment of everyone in Yaxley and beyond.

July is upon us and half the year is gone! Surely I can’t be the only one who’s still barely prepared to start 2015, and the fact that it’s already summer is quite a concern. I’m not a fan of summer, and there’s two reasons for it – firstly, I don’t like being too hot, meaning that as much of my summer as possible is spent indoors hiding from it. And the second reason I don’t like summer? Wasps.

really hate wasps. I’m cooling ever so slightly on bees on the basis that they try and keep out of my way. Also, I have previously got out of a moving vehicle because a bee got in the car, and at some point it’s going to get expensive if I don’t man up. Wasps however, are different. A wasp will go out of its way to ruin your day. A bee wants to sit and rub itself on your flowers, whereas a wasp wants to drink your cider, get in your food then attack you. A wasp is the embodiment of antisocial behaviour, but unlike 18-year-olds they don’t have the grace to do it at two in the morning when all reasonable people are

in bed asleep – they’re busy spoiling your day at the zoo, in the park with your kids or in the beer garden on a sunny afternoon. If you get up and leave or go inside, the sinful things follow you, and then have the front to get angry that they can’t get out again. Getting stung by a wasp is an unpleasant experience. The worst part of it all is that stinging you once isn’t enough for these ugly little things; it’s going to keep coming back at you again and again until you’re forced to run away. Some claim that wasps serve a useful purpose (they eat bugs or flies or something), but whatever it is I would gladly exchange it for never seeing another one for the rest of my life.
