As you are probably aware, at the time of writing this for the September Gazette, we are still unable to open our Chapel. This is due to the restrictions imposed by Covid 19. Our Sunday Services are held via the Internet at 10.30 they can be found on the Peterborough Methodist Circuit Facebook page and can be found on YouTube later in the day. Prayers are held at 8.30 in the morning during the week in the same way. For those without Internet access our Senior Steward Peter has been delivering a weekly service sheet to people in the Village. If you would like to contact us please do. There is a post box by the Chapel door if you have no internet access. The hymn
Great is Thy Faithfulness came to mind this morning and particularly the line 'Thy compassion it fails not.' The definition of compassion from one Dictionary is 'A sympathetic consciousness of others distress, together with a desire to alleviate it'. Once again We think of all of the good work being carried out in our village and of those who are putting themselves at risk by going about their work in Hospitals, Care Homes, Emergency Services etc. with Compassion. We must support them by continuing to follow the guidance and keeping ourselves and others safe for their sake.

St Peter's Church Dear Friends, September is often a month for returning. Students and school and college staff go back or start school or university, people go back to work after a summer break and the church tends to step up a gear after a quieter month. Things will have been very different for us this year and some people will notice very little difference as August slips into September and as summer starts to turn to autumn. Things will no doubt continue to be bumpy for some time to come, but I wonder what returning looks like for you in this season? Last night my husband and I watched a vlog of someone who we enjoy watching their videos and they were talking about their personal struggles over the last few months with mental health, with big plans being cancelled, with their work changing continuously. One of the biggest things seemed to be the lack to being able to see and hold family and for many of us that will have been a big loss. Everyone I speak to at present longs to return to some kind of normality, but we don’t quite know what that will look like anymore. For me returning in August means a trip to see my Mum and then some time on retreat – something that had been cancelled earlier in the year so as I write this, I am looking forward to returning to these places. As I was thinking about returning and how September would normally look, the story of the prodigal son came into my mind. It is a story that Jesus told to teach people and it can be found in the Bible in Luke 15. The prodigal son wants everything of the

best in the here and now and asks his Father to give him his share of the inheritance and he goes off and lives a high life only to lose it all. After he has done some hard labour, her realises that he could return to his Father and offer to be a servant for him as they were living in a much better way then he was. The Bible says this: "So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and put his arms around him and kissed him." I love the picture of this scene and many artists have tried to capture this. The story goes on that the Father welcomed his son home and gave a great party as what had been lost was now found. This is a picture for us as well today. We might feel that something is missing in our lives, we might have turned to prayer during these days of coronavirus hoping that there is something bigger than us out there – and there is – a God who loves and cares about each one of us, and longs for us to return to Him and he is always there with arms open wide. If you have been thinking more about why are we here and what is going on, then we will be running an online Alpha course shortly so look out for more information on this and join us to explore different questions through videos and discussion. I hope that as we move into a new month, you will know the open arms of a God who is always waiting for you and for me to share our lives with him. Despite the restrictions, our members have been keeping themselves busy sewing scrubs for the NHS, which has been vital for those on the frontline, well done to all. Some knitting is still being done and a couple of socially distanced Book Club meetings have taken place in members' gardens, weather permitting. Our Committee has been working hard during these challenging times, since the start of the lockdown a daffodil flower drop to all our members has been done. A Zoom Coffee Morning takes place each week to keep the members in touch with each other. A weekly quiz is sent out every Monday with the answers a week later, which is certainly keeping our brains ticking over. E-cards are sent out on the day of what would have been our WI meetings.
Our latest surprise ‘drop’ to the members was a cream tea box containing a tea bag, scone, small pot of strawberry jam and a small pot of clotted cream, along with a slice of cream sponge cake. Goody bags containing a quiz book, sudoku or wordsearch puzzles with the latest Covid-19 advice and a pattern to make a mask were also ‘dropped’ to all our members with the cream tea box. Committee members were kept busy delivering these safely and at the correct social distance, but our members certainly enjoyed them. For now, we just carry on and wait for the situation to improve. We are pleased to announce that all of Cambridgeshire libraries are now open with a reduced service in operation (please check for individual library opening times). We are also delighted to welcome customers back, to Yaxley Library which will be open on Tuesdays 10am–2pm and Thursdays 2pm–6pm How can I use the library? It isn’t possible to freely browse the shelves at the moment. Books can be borrowed using our new Select and Collect service or by placing a reservation on a specific title. You can choose titles according to your preferences (e.g. genre, fiction, non-fiction, talking books, children’s books etc.) and then collect them from any of the open libraries. • To reserve a specific title or to order a book using the Select and Collect service visit (www. cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/librariesleisure-culture/libraries) or call the Customer Service Centre on 0345 045 5225. Both services are completely free to use at present. Customers will be notified when their books are ready to collect. • Return items at any open library • Our IT facilities are back up and available for 45 minute customer appointments which can be made over the phone via the Customer Service Centre or online. • Printing facility- exact cash only, card payments at Cambridge Central, Huntingdon and Wisbech libraries Whilst it’s great to have our libraries open again, we appreciate that it is still short of the full offer customers are used to. We are keeping things under
continual review and will resume the full service as soon as it is possible to do so safely. • The Mobile Libraries service will not resume due to the challenge of creating a safe environment in a confined space • The Library at Home Service has partially resumed and will resume the full service later this summer • Meeting rooms, library events and activities will be reintroduced when it is safe to do so. • We cannot accept book donations at this time
Loans, renewals, reservations and charges • All items borrowed prior to lockdown have had their due date extended until the 30 September. • Reservation charges suspended until 31 August. We will continue to review this date.

Yaxley Holme Scrubs Sewing Team It all started when a group of like-minded ladies decided to help out with a plea on Facebook for scrubs to be made for the NHS To begin with we asked friends and family for unused sheets and duvet covers and printed 50 sheets of A4 to stick together to make the pattern which worked but was not ideal! So we decided to ask for help from local printers to see if we could get some patterns printed on A3 paper and had a fantastic response from Print Solutions, Bonacia and Easiprint who all donated patterns for us to use. Our group gradually increased in size and we soon ran out of fabric so we then asked for donations via social media and again the response was fantastic from the local community. The scrubs initially all went to NHS staff at Peterborough Hospital, Addenbrookes, Papworth and Hinchingbrooke. We were then asked by the East of England Air Ambulance if we could supply
them and of course we immediately helped, but as we were all at home it was a great way to show our appreciation for all the hard-working professionals who save our lives on a daily basis. The Chris Evans Foundation made us a donation of fabric which was fabulous as we were then and still now able to make scrubs from brand new fabric. As lockdown is easing off many of our members are returning to work so we are a much smaller group but still supplying local and further away charities with the most essential scrubs, occasionally using the volunteer riders to deliver for us. The work of the volunteers from both sewers and drivers has been absolutely amazing and their time, talent and dedication has been phenomenal.

Working from home due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) If your employer requires you to work at home, you can – and have always been able to – claim for increased costs due to working from home, e.g., heating and electricity Clearly, right now many firms have closed workplaces and that means across the UK millions of staff are temporarily required to work from home, and therefore are eligible to claim for increased costs. HMRC says it will consider claims from employees working at home due to coronavirus measures if their usual workplace is closed. Yet apportioning these costs can be difficult. So instead you can use a simple rate and claim £6 per week. You can claim more if your costs are higher, but it is a more labour intensive process. There are two ways to do this: Employers can pay you £6 per week extra tax-free. Employers can give you an allowance up to this amount and what they give you is free from tax, so you receive it all (to give you more, it will need to make special arrangements). But right now with many firms struggling, asking may be bad timing, so instead you can claim tax relief on £6/week (worth £1.20/week at 20% tax, £2.40/week at higher rate).If your employer won't pay expenses for your extra costs due to necessary working from home, but you have them, you can then ask for the amount to be deducted from your taxable income. To make the process easy, HMRC says that claims in line with the employers' payment (i.e., for £6/week) will not need to justify that figure – meaning you won't need to keep receipts or prove information. The impact of a £6/week claim is the tax savings, that's a gain of £1.20/week (about £62/year) for basic 20% rate taxpayers, and £2.40/week (about £124/ year) for higher 40% rate taxpayers. If you believe you have higher increased costs then you can claim more, but you will need evidence of the cost increases. How to claim the tax relief If you normally do a self-assessment tax return, you can claim on that. Yet for most people, this will simply require filling in a P87 form.

If you claim by sending this form by post, you'll need to add a 'Using your home as an office' expense manually in the 'Other expenses' section. You can claim retrospectively on expenses incurred. So, if you're only at home due to coronavirus, it's best to wait until you're back at work (or a few months anyway) then make the whole claim at once. Your tax code will likely be adjusted so you pay less tax over the year, as opposed to you getting a direct tax refund. The end of summer is approaching and as we move into autumn our farm is busy taking in the last of its grain and beginning the sowing process in anticipation of the next season This summer has been very kind to us in regard to the weather with helpful sunshine and only a few rain showers (that we’ve been able to spot!), we are very pleased. Although the yield is not what we had hoped for, we know with the year the world is enduring we are grateful for the cooperation we have with nature in being able to produce food and help Britain feed its people during this time. Learning to be grateful for the little things is something that has really hit home for us in 2020; the art of gratefulness thereby producing the warmth of contentment is key as we all work together in ensuring we come through this difficult season. Gratefulness in farming is a learned skill as we contend with the weather and all sorts of other maladies that might come along and steal our crops

and take from our hard work. Ingenuity is needed too. With that, genetics always play a big role on the farm and this year we are doing something new and different. We are embracing new genetics in a strain of winter-sown wheat called Wolverine. This strain of wheat has a resistance to BYDV (Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus) which ironically affects wheat and is transmitted by aphids. In the past few years, this has led us to sow our wheat in October and take the corresponding yield penalty. This year we will be able to sow this variety in September knowing that is it is safe from BYDV at least. That extra month; growing in the autumn, should mean a bigger yield. Which is good for us! As harvest prepares to end for us, we look in anticipation to another year of growing food and
taking care of our countryside. A fresh page is always good. We hope that you too will experience the sense of a new and better season coming your way! By now, flying ant day will have passed us by for another year but it is worth reflecting back on this natural phenomena that once almost brought Wimbledon to a standstill The signs can all be seen in advance – a few days of hot weather, not much wind, feeling a little muggy and it’s likely the ants will take to the air. The ants themselves give clues – ants living in greenhouse usually go first and ant colonies in general have a good tidy out ahead of flying (piles of soil and discarded pupal cases outside).

The reason for the day is due to the next generation of male and queen ants making their nuptial flights. On a hot and calm day, sometime between June and September, thousands of winged males and queens from many colonies in the same area will take flight to find a mate. Emerging en-masse is a defence against predators and is all about safety in numbers, ensuring that at least some of the queens will make it through to establish a new colony. Once mated, the new queens will land, lose their wings and look for a hole or crevice within which to start a new colony. The whole process is over within a few minutes or hours. You can have more than one flying
ants day in your local area, as there are several species, and the emergences are in response to local weather conditions. So flying ants day will not be the same date around the country, or even in the same town. Ants are very useful creatures, controlling crop pests, maintaining healthy soils, and dispersing plant seeds. The sudden emergence of thousands of ants on flying ants day also provides a feast for larger animals like birds. When birds eat many ants, the acid in their stomachs can stupefy them, making them appear drunk. No permanent damage is done, though they may have a hangover the next day! So, when the weather is right, the air seems to be full of flying ants and you find yourself ducking and diving, trying not to get them in your mouth or hair, don’t reach for the fly swat, just sit back, watch what is going on, think about how amazing it is that all of these ants manage to co-ordinate their lives in such a spectacular fashion, and marvel at this wonder of nature on your doorstep.

GIRLGUIDING GETS THE GREEN LIGHT! Hello again and Hooray! We have been given the green light to return to face to face meetings! However these can only be outside, with limited numbers, increased leader to girl ratios and two metre social distancing as well as the attendant several reams of paperwork! Some units might meet up over the summer if leaders can manage it, but most will restart, if leaders are able and willing, in the autumn/winter In the meantime Girlguiding is encouraging virtual meetings and the website has lots of ideas to carry on Guiding from home. Some girls have been really working hard on badges! The whole County is doing the walking challenge, at the time of writing I am only on 38 miles (got to get to 100) as I have been rather busy at my desk job, but some girls have almost made the 100 already – well done! We are hoping that the HQ building will soon qualify as Covid-secure and from the starting point of outdoor meetings, once the Government relax things again, we should then be able to get indoors and sort of back to normal. We are following the National
Youth Agency guidelines approved by Guiding and Scouting, which currently allow us groups of 15 including leaders. It is possible larger groups will be divided and if this affects your Unit your leader will contact you when she knows what’s happening. I am looking for leaders and helpers (again!). Unfortunately 2 Brownie leaders have resigned, one is retiring and the other has a new job, a third has a new baby – congratulations to Sian! Thank you ladies for your help and we wish you well. So… if you are interested in assisting our lovely Brownie leader Beth (currently on a Monday night) do register on the website and I will contact you. All helpers are gratefully accepted, all the Units
need more help from Rainbows right up to Rangers, you don’t need any experience. If you are a Girlguiding Mum, Dad or Guardian please make sure your leader has the right contact details for you. People do change their phone numbers and email addresses and sometimes we only realise this at the annual data check. We would hate for your daughter to miss out. Also if your daughter is no longer interested in Guiding it helps if you can let us know so that we can plan and also offer the opportunity to another girl. Being outdoors, photographing wildlife has to be one of the most pleasurable pursuits – it's a perfect way to be surrounded by and absorbed in beautiful scenery, studying plants, animals, birds to insects and capturing a range of atmospheric conditions
The Wildlife Trust in Cambridgeshire run an annual Wildlife Photography Competition and winners in the 2020 competition announced; the theme was Local Gems, and the deadline extended allowing for entries during lockdown, with an added category, Garden and Home Gems, and an impressive number of entries. Overall winner is Carl Everitt, with a stunning image of dawn rising over Bradlaugh Field reserve in Northampton (images had to be taken in the three counties which the local Trust covers: Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire), he wins £1,500 worth of photographic equipment from Fujifilm UK. A wide selection of 24 images was made, which will all be published in the Trust's 2021 wildlife calendar (on sale in the next few months). Two species photographed at Woodwalton Fen - a water vole by Guy Pilkington (regular photographer at the Great Fen), reflecting the fact that the Fens is a booming stronghold for these beautiful, nationally declining mammals, and a four spotted chaser dragonfly by Colin Bradshaw. Gary Norman's striking image of Wicken Fen is included, along with another four spotted chaser dragonfly by Hedley Wright at Wicken. This year the Trust were delighted to have Sarah Lambert as a judge: a highly knowledgeable botanist, ecologist, blogger and photographer, Sarah delivers nature photography workshops and is a nature tour leader, she says: “This year I was very privileged to be one of the three judges, having been a prize-winner in two previous competitions. It's been great seeing what people have photographed in their gardens.” Most gardens provide a wealth of subject matter for wildlife photography and a small area allows the development of a more in depth understanding of the animals and plants that share the space - there are many advantages to garden wildlife photography.
Here are some of Sarah's top tips for taking natural garden photographs: Attract wildlife: actively attracting wildlife to gardens by providing food and potential homes means that being near an open window can yield excellent shots. Observing wildlife and looking at natural spaces is known to stimulate feelings of well-being, and during extended periods of observation you’re more likely to capture an image that illustrates interesting behaviour or some beautiful light - plus sitting at home is generally much more comfortable than sitting in a bird hide! Insects: garden flowers attract many insects which provides an endless source of subject matter, particularly if your camera has macro facility: spend time walking round the garden noticing what’s about. Many insects seem to be constantly on the move, but take your time and you’ll see there are certain areas that they return to. Time spent watching is never wasted, and can often be rewarding with some excellent macro shots. Wildflowers, mosses and fungi: wildflowers are great seen from ground level, and as many cameras have flip-up screens, this no longer means you have to lie on the ground, though this can be a pleasant way to spend some time in warm, dry weather. Good lighting: particularly important for wildflower photography – shooting against the light in early morning or late evening highlights the translucence of delicate flowers or the presence of interesting spines and hairs. Detailed shots of flowers are best taken on calm days with high cloud cover, when the sky acts as a giant softbox, eliminating any harsh shadows.

TWENTY-FIVE 80s FILMS
you probably haven't seen
Most people will be able to reel off the majority of the best films in the 80s, like Die Hard, Beverly Hills Cop, Back to the Future, E.T, Ghostbusters, The Goonies, Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, Beetlejuice, Top Gun, The Terminator yadda yadda yadda. However, the 80s also gave us a treasure trove of films from all genres; it was the era where film rose to its highest peak The main thing about 80s movies is that most people can reel off the film names; and they have probably seen some of them, but most have only heard the names mentioned through the current wave of nostalgic TV programming (I see you Stranger Things fans) or have seen films that have a touch of the retro, synth heavy soundtracks and scenes that bring on the floods of nostalgia (Thor: Ragnarok, Captain Marvel, Ready Player One, Wonder Woman 84). With this in mind, I wanted to bring to the fore some massively overlooked 80s films, although movie geeks, and those with a degree in VHSology(!) will know ALL of these already!

I have been given this opportunity to take over a page of your local Gazette to keep you up to date on what our wealth of local artists and makers are up to in and around Peterborough. I’ll introduce you to two artists in each issue, let you know if there are any exhibitions or fairs on and suggest a project to do at home.
Firstly, I’ll introduce myself, Louise Denney of DenneyDesign. I’m a stained glass and jewellery designer with a BA(Hons) in Design Crafts, I make leaded stained glass windows on commission, lamps, sculptures, gifts and jewellery, all from my garden workshop. I hold workshops in stained glass at the Museum once or twice a year. My jewellery is hand made, enamelled silver, which can incorporate photographs fired on, found objects such as shells and driftwood and gemstones. I love using wood as a frame for stained glass and recently made a 5’ high lamp out of an aged oak beam with stained glass for the
restaurant at the Woolpack in Stanground, along with 4 fan lamps. I have an Etsy shop, Facebook page and Instagram feed as DenneyDesign, and a Facebook page as DenneyDesignStainedGlass. Due to lockdown, our local galleries, open studios and fairs are still on hold, but all the national art galleries have online interactive exhibitions on, try the Tate and the National Gallery I’d now like to introduce you to Tony Nero, a hugely talented, respected and passionate artist, who, along with making his own art, teaches it to others and tirelessly promotes the arts in Peterborough.
Originally trained as a graphic designer, Tony worked in the music industry producing record sleeves, posters and magazines for the early part of his career. His work is very diverse and he works in various different mediums such as pencil, charcoal, pastels, oils, watercolour and stipple-dot drawings. He’s partly self-taught but also had formal fine arts training at the London Guildhall University. Tony had his first solo exhibition in Peterborough in 2008 and has been showing his work regularly ever since. Tony is passionate about promoting local art in Peterborough. As well as teaching and running workshops, He’s also an active committee member of Peterborough Artists Open Studios and Creative Peterborough. His work is now in homes and private collections across the world. One of Tony’s proudest achievements to date was showing his Black Heroes collection of portraits in an exhibition at Wembley Stadium.

Here’s a project for you to try at home, it’s simple and incredibly effective. The beauty of it is, you don’t have to be neat, in fact, the splashier, the better. You will need: Watercolour paper, either watercolours or inks, a plant spray bottle with water in, brushes and a white fine liner or paint pen. Do a rough sketch of your sea creature, then spray the paper with the water to dampen it. Start with your paints or inks, the damp paper will allow them to run and blend into one another, crating light and dark, mixing and blending the colours. It doesn’t matter if you go over the lines, you can even add some splashes for effect. Allow to dry, thoroughly, then using your white pen, add detail, outlines, scales, fins, eyes, etc.

staysafe The Smartphone App Which Makes Stolen Tools Too Hot To Handle DID you know that tool theft costs tradespeople £100 million a year? Not only this – but it ruins livelihood and causes financial heartache for many self-employed people However, while this kind of crime is on the increase, technology is fast catching up with the thieves; and there is a now a new smartphone app available which makes stolen tools too hot to handle. A company in South Oxfordshire is making it tough for thieves to swipe and sell on valuable tools, and Cambridgeshire Constabulary is among a number of police forces in the UK to support the scheme - which empowers tradesmen to securely register their tools and also identify stolen ones. The easy to use app allows tradespeople to record pictures and details of their tools and receipts on a secure cloud server which holds the “ISO27001” certificate.
This list of tools can be downloaded as a PDF and sent to the police and insurance companies. Users can quickly report tools as stolen or lost from the app, which then sends an instant alert to all other local registered users, warning them a theft has just happened. After tools are reported stolen, they appear on “Dodgy Gear”, a search engine for stolen goods which can be freely accessed by any member of the public or police. Before purchasing an item (online or at a market) you can very simply check on dodgy gear to make sure the item you are about to buy is not listed as stolen. You can search for the tool by serial number, model number, brand, tool type and description.

Peters’ Cleaners Award BEST DRY CLEANING BUSINESS 2020
Peters’ Cleaners has been awarded Best Dry Cleaning Business 2020 in the 2020 UK Enterprise Awards ‘This has been a huge boost for us at a challenging time’ said Vicky Whiter, owner and Managing Director of Peters’ Cleaners. ‘We were going from strength to strength and had been awarded Best Dry Cleaner in Cambridgeshire earlier this year when Coronavirus hit’. The Judges complimented the Peterborough based multi-award-winning dry cleaner on their longevity, exceptional customer service and innovation. Founded in 1963, Peters’ Cleaners was highlighted for its innovating POD at Serpentine Green, the only fully automated drop-off and pick-up for dry cleaning and laundry in Europe.
The ‘cash point’ style POD at Serpentine Green (next to the Barber’s Pod at the entrance to Boots) means customers can drop off or pick up their dry cleaning and laundry at any time of the day or night, 365 days a year. It is not only convenient but also Covid Safe as there is no human interaction. ‘We have always been known for consistently good cleaning and have gained a reputation over the last 4 years for exceptional customer service, but we wanted to be more accessible to more customers’ explained Vicky. ‘The POD is so easy to use, you simply scan your membership card
to drop your bag and do the same to collect your cleaning once we have notified you it is ready. We do the rest!’ The POD contains a conveyor that delivers the clean clothes to pick-up door once the membership card is scanned. The concept has been used in 5-star and 6-star hotels around the world for staff laundry but this is the first time the concept has been targeted at paying customers. Peters’ Cleaners is due to launch their second POD at Peterborough Station (at the back of Waitrose) in October. Launch had been planned for earlier in the year but was delayed due to Covid-19.
