Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club - National Finals Our chairman Graham Agger fought through many rounds to gain the distinction of playing with the elite of the bowls world in the Nationals at Skegness in the Four Wood Singles. Faced with three rounds he must win to become a National Champion he cruised through the first, found himself 16 - 2 down in the semi final but fought back to win 21 -17! The final saw him facing a tremendous challenge in the form of Wayne Burrage from Norfolk a 7 times national winner! In contention the whole way he lost by the slenderest of margins. A very noteworthy achievement. The Reg Jackson Trophy saw Graham competing with Doris Flowers and Richard Montgomery in a competition coming 3rd out a massive entry of 144 Teams! Cook Cup won by Doris Flowers. A huge turn out on a glorious day more than compensated for the previous wash out.

Fancy a day out in France? Day trip to Ypres, Saturday 15th November I am organising a day trip to France and Belguim from Stilton and Yaxley on the above date, if there is enough interest the coach will leave Stilton/Yaxley British Legion at 5.30am for Folkestone and the Chanel Tunnel. First stop off will be Ypres Town, where you can have a wander or visit the Battlefields of Ypres. On the return journey we will call at Cite De Europe for shopping and food before returning home, arriving approximately 11.30pm. Coach Price is £60 per person, price includes: Coffee/Tea/ Biscuits including Cake! Wine or soft drink going through the tunnel plus the driver’s tip! A deposit of £30 will be required. If interested please call me Pat on 01733 243479.

Finals day. All too soon! Played in brilliant sunshine it was a joy to players and spectators alike. As always I mention the first timers. This year it was Janet Jaggard who not only battled her way to finals day but won the Aston Cup. Fred Browning continued his record breaking number of appearances on Finals day. Full results on the club website. This used to be the culmination of our season, not now! We take full advantage of the September weather to extend our all too short season.

Gidding history day

Improve your strength & balance and reduce falling Falls are a major public health problem, they are common in people aged 65 and older and are the leading cause of injury in this age group. Falls can have serious consequences: fractures, trauma, pain, impaired function, loss of confidence in carrying out everyday activities and a loss of independence. Classes are held every Thursday afternoon from 2.30-3.30pm at the British Legion Hall, Yaxley and costs £3 a class, no pre-booking is required. If attending for the first time please turn up 15 minutes early to meet the instructor and to complete a short health questionnaire. It is always advisable to check with a health professional before beginning any exercise programme.

Around one-third of generally healthy people aged 65 and older will have at least one fall each year, and a key concern is that the rate of falls and severity of the resulting complications increase dramatically with age. The majority of falls occur because of multiple interacting factors, but leg muscle weakness and impaired balance contribute to most falls. The Sport and Active Lifestyles Team offer specialist exercise classes for older people and people with medical conditions. The RightStart2 class is a strength and balance exercise class, focusing on the prevention of falls. It consists of a set of leg muscle strengthening and balance retraining exercises progressing in difficulty.

‘I am very happy with our class. Not only do we benefit from the exercise, but we socialise as a result of it. We make friends - most important when you’re older.’ Said a class participant.

WI Updates

Saturday 18th October is the date for the Gidding History Day. This will be held in Great Gidding Village Hall between 11AM and 5PM and will be an opportunity to find out more about Great, Little and Steeple Gidding. There is a Gidding History Group that holds monthly meetings over the winter months and we held really successful History Day 3 years ago, when lots of photographs, documents and memories were shared.

Yaxley WI

We hope to build on the success of that event and invite anyone who has an interest in past residents of the Giddings or where they lived, worked and socialised.

On 14 August members and visitors were entertained by Derek Harris who sang and performed ‘Characters From The Cut’, each person was in some way connected to canals.

There will be a display of the houses where we have researched the people who lived there over the centuries. We have researched those residents who fought in World War I and will have information available on their role in the War and in village life.

Particularly amusing was ‘Sean’ a reluctant 13 year old narrow boat holiday maker! An excellent speaker who left us all with a smile on our face.

We would also like to hear about local memories of World War II. A local archaeologist will be on hand during the day to identify items found locally, and he hopes to carry out a test pit dig in the village during the event. The Gidding History Group members are keen to see any photographs and documents relating to the Giddings, or just come along to see what is on display (Entry is FREE). Further details on www.thegiddings.org.uk

Visitors always welcome at our meetings on 2nd Thursday of each month at the Lancaster Club in Main Street.

Holme WI Our meeting in August were stories from the retired butler at Burghley. He kept us hugely amused and fascinated with stories about his employment over the years, about a lifestyle that we have no idea of apart from what we see on the TV. As for the silver utensil that he bought with us to guess.....well that would be telling wouldn’t it? We have also been busy using wool from the new WI range to knit blankets for charity, our wonderful members have finished three blankets so far to hand over to various charities with enough squares to make at least two more! Our next meeting on 2nd October is being arranged and hosted by the members; feel free to join us, 7.30pm at Holme village hall.

Million to one chance! With a million trucks on the road in the UK, the chances of seeing a Pink one might be quite slim! Think again as local company Solstor UK limited have teamed up with the Pink Ribbon Foundation to produce a Pink Truck. Julie Church a local lady and one of the only 2 female drivers for Solstor, joked how she would like a pink Polo shirt for work and a pink truck, little did she know it was going to happen. Solstor is working closely with the Pink Ribbon Foundation to raise awareness of Breast Cancer and will be doing lots of fundraising events.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue

Holme Afternoon Tea Club The first meeting of the new season took place on 10th September at Holme Village Hall. Members enjoyed a picture quiz along with afternoon tea. Our next meeting will take place on Wednesday 8 October at Holme Village Hall when David Cozens will perform a lantern show. All retired persons over 55 years from the villages of Holme and Conington are welcome. Please contact Sue Knight on 01487 830768 for details.

WINTER is coming and after seeing a rise in chimney fires last year, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging all residents to get their chimney professionally swept before the cold sets in

Special Thanks The Yaxley Public Hall fete last Sunday, 7th September turned out to be a successful fund raising event, aided by the lovely weather. We would have liked more people there but those who attended enjoyed themselves and any profit will be used to improve the Hall facilities.

The first one is a Charity bike ride on Sunday 19th October, with over 20 cyclists heading to Solstors Head office in Crayford on a bus, with the pink truck following them, they will then begin the 100 mile bike ride home, back to the British Legion in Yaxley, they are hoping to arrive back by 4pm. The British Legion will be supporting the charity afternoon which promises to be an action packed afternoon with a BBQ, Bouncy Castle, Stalls,Face Painting, raffle and much more. See our advert right.

Top tips to enjoy an open fire safely: • Sweep your chimney at least once a year and get brickwork inspected, especially the chimney breast and roof space. • Do not bank fires too high or overload the grate, and remember to let them burn down well and check the hearth before going to bed.

Thank you to everyone who supported the event as stallholders, helpers and visitors and special thanks to those who donated prizes:

• Use a fire or spark guard to prevent accidental fires.

• Burn only suitable fuels and avoid burning resinous woods as soot builds up quickly.

The next event being held by Yaxley Amateur Players Youth Group is ‘World’s Apart’ on 17th & 18th October 2014. The costs of tickets are £5 per person. ‘Yaxley’s Got Talent’ has been re-scheduled to Saturday, 15th November 2014 and we look forward to receiving entries as soon as possible. Royal British Legion’s Annual Poppy Appeal

Finding information can be hard for older people

Competition Winners

Can you help? Community Navigators are local volunteers who help older people find information on enjoyable activities and useful services No question is too big or too small. Queries can be about both the fun and the practical. It could be anything from finding leisure activities to where to get financial advice, or help to stay independent at home. Their job is to find out what is available; it’s then your choice what to do. Community navigators are a project run by local volunteering charity, Care Network Cambridgeshire, which has been operating throughout the county for over 30 years.

Watch out this month for the start of the Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal. Recently Tom Cochrane, Chairman of Yaxley Branch of the British Legion, and Chris Waites, Secretary, were presented with over 100 knitted poppies by Yaxley Library Knitting Group.

Pick up gloves, hats, mini-pumpkins, mug hugs, bags, novelties and much, much more at the Knitting Group’s sale of goods in Yaxley Library on Saturday October 18th. Look out for the knitted poppies, along with the traditional ones, on sale at the Poppy Appeal stall in Dobbies Garden Centre from the last week in October.

Chris Waites was very grateful for the donation: “I’m amazed at the ladies’ skill. And at this special centennial anniversary of the outbreak of World War I it is especially touching that the Knitting Group has given so much time and effort to help those who have served our country and who are now in need.” The Royal British Legion supports thousands of service personnel and ex-service personnel and their families every year, and is also the main organiser of commemoration parades and events in this country. Yaxley Knitting Group meets every Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the library, and new members are always welcome.Amongst the Group’s many knitted creations in 2014 have been blankets for old people’s homes, baby hats for Tanzanian hospitals and toys and cushions for the children’s corner of the library; and this Christmas, of course, the library will be trimmed entirely with their knitted decorations!

Examples of queries Community Navigators can solve: • Car Schemes and help with transport • Luncheon clubs • Mobility aids • Help to access benefits • Point you toward a Help at Home service – Free short term practical and emotional help after a hospital stay, crisis or illness at home. Volunteers can collect prescriptions, shopping, help with a one off task or call in to check you are okay. How can I help? Just knowing what support is available can make older people feel safer, more connected to their community and able to stay independent and healthy for longer. Care Network is looking for people from Yaxley with a desire to help their community! You can get involved by: Volunteering (You only need give a few hours each month. Training, support and expenses are provided) Inviting us to your meetings or events (We will be able to explain our projects and how they can help)

Following the success of Yaxley Festival 2014 Mark Oliver, the Managing Director of Fenland Stoneworks Ltd and Peterborough & District Funeral Services Ltd, both local independent family run companies on Broadway here in Yaxley was pleased to present prizes to winners of two competitions run over the Festival weekend. Our first competition for Peterborough & District Funeral Services Ltd was to guess the correct number of balloons in the limousine and Mrs Rickman from Yaxley won a Marks & Spencer Summer Hamper for her closest guess. The winner of the competition run by Fenland Stoneworks Ltd for the house plaque was won by Mr Brown from Yaxley, who was randomly drawn from the competition box after leaving his details with us. We would like to thank everyone for taking part and the time to stop by and say hello. We look forward to seeing you all again next year for Yaxley Festival 2015 with our display of granite horses, activities and new competitions.

Life on the Holme front

Travelling back to the 1940’s Holme Village and Holmewood Hall transforms itself for this spectacular weekend, with re-enactors showing military and civilian life with camps and exhibitions through the streets, Holmewood Hall and its Gardens interspersed with stalls selling vintage and military wares from uniforms to china, there is plenty for all the family to enjoy with remote controlled tanks and a single gauge railway, as well as music and dancing from the era. Everyone is welcome and if you want to dress up to really get into the spirit of the event you will would be made even more welcome and you can mingle with the re-enactors and other visitors.

4 & 5 October 2014 10am – 4pm Free entrance to event £2.00 Car Park All Day

The Bishop of Peterborough spoke at the service and remarked on the difference in age between the building being dedicated and Peterborough cathedral which will shortly celebrate its 900th anniversary. The two buildings are , of course, very different. However, Bishop Donald continued by noting that the Gospel proclaimed 900 years ago (and indeed earlier) is unchanging and that the Bible assures us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Our Holiday Club in the last week of August went extremely well. Around 60 children attended as we looked at the story of Joseph (of dream coat fame) and what we could learn from his life about our unchanging God and his love for us.

Lastly, I would like to plug SPARKS (pun intended) our group for children aged 0 to 4 and their parents / carers. Several of the children have just left us to go to school and we look forward to welcoming many new faces. We meet fortnightly on Fridays from 9.30am in St Peter’s. October dates are Friday 3rd and 17th. There is craft, music, story times, refreshments and this is also a place to meet other parents, grandparents and carers.

Sunday 5 October 11am 11.45am 1pm 1 - 3pm

On September 8th I had the privilege of attending the dedication of the new church building of Christ the Servant King (CSK) in Hampton. This is a fabulous building with space for worship, meetings, refreshment and fellowship with the local community.

Parts of St Peter’s church are almost as old as the cathedral. If you would like to come along during the week to have a look around St Peter’s then please visit on weekday mornings in October. We will next be open during the week when the weather warms up again around Easter.

This event is hugely popular with the special history that Holme Village and Holmewood Hall has with the OSS during WWII and is made really special by all those who attend.

Holme are holding their 1940’s weekend soon and it reminded me about the part our Chapel congregation played in the community during that decade. The Women’s ‘Bright Hour’ had knitted 600 woollen garments for the troops. As well as 49 children in the Sunday School there were 26 evacuees who were offered safety and comfort in the village away from the London Blitz. The Chapel may look very different to the 1940’s with central heating instead of a stove, chairs instead of pews, modern decor and access for people with disabilities. However, our aim to help in the community is still the same. We spent a lovely afternoon with the residents in Snowhills in September. They have been so generous to the Foodbank collection. We supplied the cakes for tea and joined in the Bingo (unsuccessfully). Sunday Services and Junior Yaxley Methodist Church, Main Street, Yaxley

Yaxley juniors a beacon of light in a difficult season

Little Kickers “

The children must outwit the bears to capture the fruit, go on train journeys to the seaside and protect their balls from shark infested seas, all of which involve them running, stretching, jumping and getting hot and sweaty.

Little Kickers has been delighted with its re-launch to the classes in the area under new management, and the classes offering football fun for children aged 2 years to 7 years are now thriving.

While Yaxley’s senior team troubles have been well documented, their junior teams have been making a big impression! Both the U9 boys and U11 girls teams won their respective divisions and represented the club at the County finals day at Eaton Socon CC, performing well but finishing in 3rd and 4th place. It’s not just the youngest category that have shone, all age groups have performed well as the U11’s and U13’s both finished as runners up and the U15’s finished a creditable 3rd in their divisions providing much optimism of a bright future for the club.

The classes get the children’s imaginations fired as they take part in games where they must outwit the bears to capture the fruit, go on train journeys to the seaside and protect their balls from shark-infested seas, all of which involve them running, stretching, jumping and getting hot and sweaty!

Yaxley’s Youth Develepment Manager Phil Lewis commented. “The season has been everything we had hoped for and more across all age groups. To have both our youngest sides win their divisions is a great achievement and was a good excuse for a Yaxley road trip!” “There is some great talent and whilst the older players are still one or two years away from making big impressions in the senior teams, the club certainly has a very bright future. Just a couple of weeks ago, 12 year old Danny Iqbal claimed a brilliant 4 wickets for 12 runs spell in the 2nd team.” Parents interested in junior cricket are advised to contact the club via e-mail at yaxleycc@gmail.com or call Phil Lewis on 07791 582337.

the pre-school population, but the company ethos has remained the same: play not push. Our belief that the potential of the younger age group is limitless and our commitment to ensuring that every pre-schooler who attends one of our sessions receives an inspiring introduction to sport.

Little Acorn Pre-school

Holme Pre-school

Fourfields

At the end of the last academic year the school was awarded the Inclusion Quality Mark. This award takes account of all stakeholders views and builds a picture of the inclusive nature of the school.

This month our children have been learning about different occupations and job roles. We were very fortunate to have received visits from parents who work as a Policeman, a Doctor, a health visitor and a travel agent. Our children have learnt all about these roles and have been able to explore a police car, and play doctor. We were donated several travel brochures which the children have used to create pictures of their own. The children are beginning to explore autumn now and have had a lot of fun with the fallen leaves, printing pictures and doing bark rubbings. Finally we would like to welcome our new families, and we hope that our new children will settle and enjoy their time with us. Enquiries: 01733 244000 or visit www.littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

After a 2 day assessment the inspector praised the school for its happy, safe and vibrant atmosphere with a mutual respect between staff and pupils and also commented on the good and outstanding progress that is made by our children because of a strong understanding by all staff about each child’s individual needs.

As we welcome back our children from the summer break, we also welcome two new members to the team.

This month will also see us focus on our library which has been redeveloped and restocked through the generosity of the Friends of Fourfields. This has been further supported by a very successful Book Fair and a generous grant from Clark-Drain Ltd. This is fabulous news for all the keen and budding readers in Fourfields.

Sally Barnard joins us as our new Manager, relocating to the area with over ten years’ experience as a Pre-school Manager and Sarah Patterson as the Deputy.

If you have some spare time and would like to help our children progress with their reading and in the process help them develop a love for story telling, please consider becoming a volunteer reader Please contact Mrs Mulley, School Business Manager, for more information. www.fourfields.cambs.sch.uk

This term we will be busy working around the themes of ‘autumn’ and ‘our environment, using the outdoors as a focus for play and exploration. We will also be out and about around the village recording and displaying our findings through photos, paintings and mark making. We also have one of our Pre-school mums, Melanie Coeshott, kindly running the Great Eastern run to raise funds for us. It’s her first major effort since having her two children so, if you would like to support her, please see www.givey.com/quirkymarnie

Folksworth Pre-school

Folksworth Preschool have a busy term ahead, we are looking at changes, growth, temperature, patterns and objects in the environment. Everyone has returned excited about the holidays and activities they had during the summer months and we have all enjoyed listening to each other’s stories. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Lynne who has been with us for nearly four years and we wish her every success in her future role. Folksworth Preschool was very busy last year and because of this we have decided to offer a full day on a Tuesday also. Our fantastic Toddler group has moved to a Thursday morning and has lots of new toys together with a lovely new leader Lisa. For information on this group please look at the Preschool website and the Folksworth Toddlers Facebook page. New criteria from the government mean that many more local families are entitled to two year old funding which we are proud to offer. Please contact your local Sure Start Centre to see if you are eligible. Contact Jade on 07542 172075 to book a free taster session.

William de Yaxley Junior School

Yaxley Infant School

High standards in terms of uniform were praised by Mrs Corley, Headteacher, on the first day of the new term. The first assembly of the New Year saw new beginnings not just for the children, who had moved up from infant schools to Year 3, but also for a number of new staff, and they received a big welcome to our “family.” Mr Luke Weston (Total Sports) was also present at that first assembly, encouraging the strong sporting element of our school curriculum and it was lovely to see how many hands went up when he asked how many children have already been sports ambassadors, as these children all display the ethos and values of the Olympic legacy. Children have been wearing smiley stickers on their uniforms, to show that they have been recognised for excellent work, good effort and lovely manners. Smiley’s can be collected to gain bronze, silver and gold awards and the children were very enthusiastic to hear that they might be rewarded perhaps with a trip to an activity centre if the whole class achieve their bronze, silver and gold awards. Around the Year Groups: • Year 3 - Ancient Egypt will be studied as their topic. The children will be finding out what a Canopic jar is and have a go at making one, although the contents will differ from the ones stored in these in ancient times… • Year 4 – Will be studying ancient Rome. They will produce a Roman mosaic over the next few weeks. • Year 5 the 18th/ 19th century will be the period in History that the year 5’s will learn about; The Georgians. They have started reading The Highwayman poem and will write a newspaper article and a story based on this. • Year 6 are turning their attention to the Battle of Britain as seen as a pivotal point in our history. If you have any spare time and would like to make a difference in the community, we would welcome any adult who would like to read with the children. Please contact Mrs Alberga at Reception for further details.

Exam success for Stanground Academy pupils Indicative results published in August show that 50 per cent of pupils have gained five or more GCSE passes (A* - C) including English and mathematics. This result is way above the current national target for pass rates at GCSE (40 per cent).

achieving three or more vocational equivalents of A-levels has also gone up by a staggering 43 percentage points and now stands at 67 per cent. Again, these figures are both significantly higher than the national Post-16 results for 2013.

Whilst all the pupils have done remarkably well, there are some that have particular cause to celebrate.

Nikki Francis who has achieved an A* in physics and A grades in biology, chemistry, mathematics and further mathematics. She is going to study medicine at the University of Nottingham.

• Jodie Bailey who achieved 8 A* grades, an A grade and a Distinction*. What’s even more impressive is that Jodie scored 100 per cent in History and 100 per cent in three out of four French units, only dropping 4 marks overall.

What a fantastic start to our new school year at Yaxley Infant School! Despite the first week being a short one, we managed to write our new class charters, discuss our plans and dreams for the year ahead and spend lots of time getting to know our new friends, classrooms and teachers. We also kicked off our new and improved ‘Alert 2 Learn’ routine. Every morning we start our day in the healthiest way; with exercise that gets us ready for successful learning. It gets our hearts pumping, our brains ticking and to top it off…it’s really great fun! Our whole school theme this term is ‘Environmental Extravaganza’ and we spent a busy week learning outside, making large scale art projects, surveying the school grounds and making our own wormeries. We had story time in our wonderful outdoor classroom and used our sketching skills to create stunning observational drawings of trees. Fortunately the weather has been amazing, let’s hope it continues. We are looking forward to becoming local historians and finding out facts about Yaxley’s interesting past. If you have any information about the History of Yaxley that you feel would be of interest then please contact the school. office@yaxley.cambs.sch.uk

• Georgia Hewitt-Davis who achieved 2A* grades, 2A grades, 2Distinction*, 2B grades and a C grade. • Janine Quinn who achieved an A* grade, 2A grades, a Distinction*, 3B grades and a C grade. • Mae Bloye who achieved 5 A grades, a Distinction* and 4 B grades. • Harry Pace who achieved an A* grade, 2 A grades, a Distinction*, a Distinction and 4 B grades. • Giovanna Ligorio who achieved an A*, 4 A grades, a Distinction * and 3 B grades. The examination results for Post-16 students released in August were also cause for celebration. Performance in academic qualifications has continued to improve this year. The percentage of students achieving two or more A-levels has risen 13 percentage points to 96 per cent and what’s even more impressive is that the percentage of students achieving three or more A-levels has also gone up 18 percentage points and now stands at 87 per cent. These figures are both significantly higher than the national Post-16 results for 2013. Performance in vocational qualifications is equally impressive. The percentage of students achieving two or more vocational equivalents of A-levels has risen 12 percentage points to 88 per cent and the percentage of students

Whilst all the students have done remarkably well, there are some that have particular cause to celebrate.

Aileen Crosbie who has achieved an A* in general studies, A grades in history, philosophy and a B in geography. Jacob Tompsett who has achieved A grades in further mathematics and general studies and B grades in biology mathematics and physics. Harriett Smith who has achieved A grades in health and social careand psychology and B grades in biology and general studies. Whilst studying she has also raised a significant sum of money for charity by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro as part of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and was nominated for ‘Cambridgeshire Young Person of the Year’. Emily Mescall who has achieved A grades in philosophy and the extended project and B grades in English and performing arts. Chloe Pavey who has achieved A grades in philosophy and PE, a B in history and a C in general studies. Ged Rae, Principal, said: “Our Academy has achieved a good set of examination results this year at both Key Stage 4 and 5 which demonstrate that we are continuing to make progress. “I would like to congratulate our students on their well-deserved successes and thank them for their significant contribution to the development of Stanground Academy. Further, I would like to thank Academy staff for their continued hard work as we strive to become the outstanding Academy our community deserves.” The Stanground Academy is one of the 26 Academies sponsored by the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust (GDFT).

Interested in researching your family history?

Have you ever thought about researching your family history? At the Cambridgeshire Family History Society Fair on 25 October, we can help! With the eleventh series of Who Do You Think You Are? airing on our screens this summer, family history has never been more popular. Expert advice will be on hand at the Cambridgeshire Family History Society Fair on 25 October. Speakers will teach you how to find your Cambridgeshire ancestors and then show you how you can turn your research into an interesting story for your family and friends. In this very special 100th anniversary year since the start of the First World War and 70th year since D-Day, you will also hear about the Imperial War Museum Duxford’s collection of Second World War images as well as learning how to date old photographs from looking at clues given in pictures. Exhibitors from family and local history societies will be attending, as well as organisations offering everything that you need to help you with your research. Whether your

ancestors are from Cambridgeshire, or beyond, experienced Family History Society volunteers will be available for one-to-one sessions to give advice about getting started and what to do if you get stuck. There will also be free access to the main genealogy providers’ websites throughout the day. Share ideas and practical tips with your fellow family historians and, for a small charge, there will be soup and a roll for lunch while you chat! The fair is taking place at Girton Glebe School, Girton. Doors open 10am-4pm. Parking and entry is free (£2 to attend each talk). The Citi 6 bus stops outside the school.

Taxation

Question: I’ve heard I won’t need to tax my car any more as DVLA are abolishing car tax discs? Answer: I’m afraid not. The traditional tax disc will no longer need to be displayed from 1 October 2014, after 93 years on our windscreens, but drivers will still have to pay vehicle excise duty, which we commonly refer to as car tax”. Other changes are that if you sell your vehicle you will get a refund for full calendar months left and you will now also be able to pay for “car tax” monthly.

Bird & Co News The vast majority of VAT registered businesses must submit VAT returns online and make any payments due electronically. In the past it has only been possible to avoid the obligation to file online if the taxpayer was a practicing member of a religious society or order whose beliefs are incompatible with the use of electronic equipment, or if the business was in insolvency proceedings. However, following a recent Tribunal decision, HMRC agreed to relax the rules to allow businesses to file by telephone if they can satisfy HMRC that it is not practical to file returns electronically due to their age, disability, computer illiteracy, remoteness of location, or any other reason. If telephone filing is similarly impracticable, affected VAT traders will be able to submit paper returns. Changes to the legislation to formalise the option for telephone filing came into effect on 1 July 2014.

Ingredients

Method 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Line a large baking tray with non-stick baking paper. Place the pumpkin on the lined tray and spray with olive oil spray. Season with pepper. Bake in oven for 25 minutes or until golden. 2.

Meanwhile, heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Spray lightly with olive oil spray to grease. Add the leek and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until soft. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute or until soft. Add the spinach and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until the spinach just wilts.

3.

Line a 26 x 16cm (base measurement) slab pan with non-stick baking paper. Spread the pumpkin and leek mixture evenly over the base of pan.

4.

Whisk together the eggs, egg whites and milk in a jug. Pour egg mixture evenly over pumpkin and leek mixture. Sprinkle evenly with ricotta. Bake for 20 minutes or until puffed and golden. Sprinkle with the basil. Serve with mixed salad leaves, if desired.

The Judge in the tax case that prompted the change found that the failure of HMRC to provide additional filing options was a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

Family Law worries Court is NOT the only option

When a couple separate difficult decisions have to be made including arrangements for the children of the family and how to divide the finances to ensure everyone’s housing and income needs are met now and in the future. In an ideal world couples would sit down together and work out an agreement, but sadly that is not always possible. There are several options available to couples which do not include court proceedings. These include: • Solicitor Negotiation - where each party instructs a solicitor to enter into negotiations on their behalf in the hope of reaching a mutual agreement; • Mediation - where an independent mediator holds a number of meetings with the couple jointly in the hope of assisting them to agree arrangements directly; • Collaborative – where each party instructs a solicitor separately and the four of them meet to discuss matters directly in the hope of reaching an agreement; • Court proceedings – a last resort if no other option allows the parties to reach agreement on all issues Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting clients to reach a swift, amicable agreement but which best protects their needs now and in the future. Abby Smith has many years’ experience in dealing with such issues and is an accredited specialist in this field. For any Family Law queries please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you.

Threadlift at The Cosmetic Clinic As well as the Silhouette Soft Lift procedure, The Cosmetic Clinic also specialises in the PDO thread lift / skin tightening treatment which is performed by inserting the threads using a special cannulae needle. This means there is virtually no downtime and the whole procedure taking only 45 minutes to 1 hour or a little longer for a full facelift with no discomfort whatsoever as a local anaesthetic is used in the treatment area. The threads are 100% polydioxanine which is a bio-compatible material that is already widely used in medical suturing so absolutely completely safe. The facial contouring reduces roundness of the face and lifts sagging skin around the facial area, cheeks, jowls, cheeks and the malar area. The PDO threads are also excellent for a neck and eyebrow lift. This procedure is really popular and like the Silhouette Soft thread lift it can be combined with dermal fillers and botox for optimal results.

Pets

Enviroment

Great Fen Archaeology Group

Remember, remember your pets this November! A staggering 80% of pet owners have a pet who is scared this time of year with dogs far more likely to suffer. Fireworks are no longer restricted to a few nights a year, instead displays are held at any time over the winter season. Sound phobias in dogs can spiral downwards and with no let up, some animals struggle to cope and can take months to get back to their normal selves.

Preparation is key

Managing an animal with sound phobia can be challenging and can be approached with 3 methods; specialist products, behavioural preparation and with common sense.

An exciting new Archaeology Group has been launched at Great Fen. The group hopes to bring together both experienced and budding archaeologists who are interested in the great opportunities to explore beneath the surface on the Great Fen area. Working with Jigsaw Cambridgeshire the group will discover and learn the skills needed for fieldwalking, artefact identification, excavation and other archaeological survey techniques. Already the group have nominated a Chairperson and have decided to focus on the area that was once Whittlesea Mere (now part of the Great Fen project area). The Mere used to be the largest lowland lake south of the Lake District before it was drained in 1851. When the Mere was drained many items of historical interest were found including the skeleton of a grampus (whale) and the skull from a wild boar. Of particular interest were a medieval censer and

incense boat believed to be from Ramsey Abbey which is now housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Many medieval fishing weights have been more recently found and the group hopes to find more exciting artefacts whilst discovering this area. Some of the first activities for the group are to explore the eastern side of the Whittlesea Mere area, in preparation for fieldwalking one of the fields in which previous discoveries have been located. Fieldwalking in this area has been planned for late autumn 2014. The information gathered from their activities will be vital to help discover more about the Mere and to help continue to preserve the heritage of this area. If you are interested in joining the Great Fen Archaeology Group or want more information about the group please contact Sue (Chair) at sue.wallis@wildlifebcn.org

Imagine you snuggled up for the night at home, then BANG! It comes from nowhere. BANG! The room flashes. Where’s it coming from? Another room might be safe. BANG! It’s here too! You’re scared, you’re confused. BANG! Run to find the family just to be told, ‘get down’. BANG, FLASH! It’s everywhere! None of your usual places are safe but you find something to hide underneath and cower low to the floor, hoping that whatever it is won’t hurt you. This is the experience many pets have this time of year – firework season. The bangs and crackles of the displays can be bewildering and terrifying for animals. There are many ways pets show they are stressed: • • • • • • • •

Trembling and shaking Toileting in the house Inter-animal tension Excessive vocalisation Pacing and panting Refusing to eat Hiding Clinging to owner

Specialist products – pheromone diffusers and natural ingredients in a capsule designed to help to calm the animal. These products are most effective when given for at least a month before the fireworks start. For extreme cases a Vet may prescribe a sedative for the safety of the animal and their owner. Behavioural preparation – firework fear doesn’t just go away on its own, in fact it’s likely to get worse. For the long term, behavioural therapy is recommended. Common sense – there are lots of little things you can do while fireworks are going off to help your pet cope: • Keep them indoors after dark • Provide them with a den in their favourite place in the house • Ignore fearful behaviour, stay calm and don’t get angry – it might sound counter-intuitive but comforting a fearful animal only confirms to them that there’s something to be afraid of. • Muffle the sound – shut the windows, doors and curtains and turn up the TV or radio. • Provide distraction – perhaps a new toy or chew. If you need any advice on how to prepare your pet for the fireworks season and how to help them through it, book a FREE appointment with our Nurses by calling 01480 52601.

Celebrating the growth of local business... Bird & Co Certified Accountants of Yaxley move into new, larger premises

by Eileen Le Voi

www.safelocaltrades.com

Local and well known accountant Pete Bird F.C.P.A. who started Bird & Co many years ago has now moved into new office premises in Holme Road Yaxley from September 2014. You may have read his monthly articles in this magazine. This move has been necessary due to the number of new clients and expansion of existing clients who have grown with him.

So October is here. Summer is but a distant memory, the excitement of the first day of school has descended into the day to day drudgery, and we are neck deep in the annual misery-fest that is X Factor. Fear not though (or do, I forget how it works), as Halloween is upon us. Traditionally a pagan holiday, Halloween celebrates the time when ghosts used to go door to door collecting sweets (or in America – Candy, although America hadn’t been invented at the time). Today however the trick or treating is more the preserve of parents with small children and well-mannered teenagers. I remember when I was about ten or eleven having a group of unsuccessful trick or treaters throwing fireworks at our house, so the occasional egg or silly string should be kept firmly in perspective. So, to business. Halloween is a time for all people to have fun, so here are my suggestions to help you enjoy it. Parents of young children – For the best Halloween costume, dress them in all back and Sellotape glow sticks to them. Hey Presto, you have created the world’s most adorable stick man. Don’t believe me? Google it, as there’s a spectacular video of it from last year. Homeowners – Last year a number of people I know decided to make ‘Toffee Onions’ to give out; almost identical to their apple cousins by eye, but very much not identical to the taste. I also had a friend who threw water from his upstairs window should any undesirables turn up begging for free sweets. The best Halloween activity I’ve heard however I saw on the internet, where a guy had a full camouflage suit and an air horn, and hid at the bottom of his garden. Whilst this is funny for Halloween, it’s really important to remember that you can’t do this on any other day of the year.

Are you registered?

Pete has now been joined by another local accountant from Fletton, Mark Laws F.C.C.A. who practices under the name of Prospect Accountancy. Their combined qualifications and experience enables them to deal in a prompt and timely manner with all accountancy and taxation requirements whether it be start-ups, sole traders, partnerships or limited companies in the most tax efficient way of trading.

If not, then you are missing out on a valuable source of local information!

We of course continue to offer all services you would expect from a firm of accountants, such as VAT returns, Book-keeping, Company Secretarial, Payroll, Self-Assessment and Tax Planning.

What is eCops? eCops is a community messaging system run by Cambridgeshire Police. Once you are registered, you will receive regular live updates about crime and anti-social behaviour that is happening in your area, including distraction burglaries, details of crime incidents and current police activity to address problems in particular neighbourhoods. You will also receive crime reduction and community safety advice.

The new offices are in Holme Road on the right hand side. Pete and Mark also both share the same outlook of a personal relationship with their clients. As Pete previously worked from his home which is just around the corner from the offices, any clients that wish to drop any correspondence, records or meet outside of normal office hours, can still do so at his home at 17 West End, Yaxley. We therefore look forward to welcoming old and new clients to these new offices even if it’s just a chat over a cuppa!

It’s a great way of staying in touch with community issues, which can also be shared with family, friends and colleagues. You can also email your policing team through eCops to share any concerns you have or help local officers with their enquiries, providing feedback on incidents or appeals for information.

Taurus April 21-May21 Getting away from your usual routine will do you the world of good, a change of scenery or company is just what you need right now. High expectations from a loved one will cause unnecessary pressure, have a heart to heart talk in order to get back on an even keel.

Libra September 24-October 23 If certain friends have proved to be unreliable and disappointing, see this as your get-out-of- jail card and cut the ties once and for all, you haven’t room for time wasters. A golden opportunity on the work front needs to be seized, really show people what you are capable of.
