It’s November already! Who else thinks it should only be April?! With everything that’s going on it feels like 2020 is galloping away from us so fast I can hardly keep up! November is normally when we start looking forward to Bonfire Night and in previous years it’s been a joy to see the stunning locally organised displays that are so popular with families and children. Of course, this year is quite different with most (if not all) local displays cancelled. There’s always the option to let off a few fireworks in your back garden with your family (maybe silent ones so the Gazette Facebook group isn't swamped!!) and if you do then please remember there are an extra set of Covid-19 restrictions around family gatherings to add to the usual Firework Code, so please be careful. Of course, November is also the time when we commemorate the fallen on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday which this year is on 8 November. I’m comforted to know that the ceremony at the Cenotaph in London is still going ahead, although with a much-reduced appearance by the members of the Armed Forces. While local ceremonies are unlikely The Royal British Legion is encouraging us all to fundraise in a number of ways, you can find more details at www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/ poppy-appeal. I have given the back cover of the magazine in Remembrance so I am hoping you will cut it out and display it in your window, wouldn't it be lovely to see these displayed in homes throughout the local area to show our support and a huge thank you to Stewart Howe for designing the poster. Thank you to our editorial contributors and advertisers for supporting the Yaxley Gazette and being part of the Yaxley Gazette Magazine Community. Whatever November has in store for you, please stay safe and stay positive. All the best,

yaxleyhub Yaxley Methodist Chapel

(Main Street, Yaxley)

We are still waiting for the safest time to open our Chapel and hope that we may be able to do this safely before the Advent and Christmas season begins. Until then we are holding prayers in the morning from Monday to Thursday at 8.30 am. and Sunday Services at 10.30 all via the Circuit Facebook page and YouTube. Peter, our Senior Steward, delivers service sheets for people who don't have IT access. If you need to contact us we have a post box by the Chapel door. November we would normally be announcing the beginning of the Peterborough Night Shelter, where volunteers at local Churches offer overnight shelter, hot food and companionship to people who would otherwise be sleeping on our streets throughout the coldest months of the year. Due to Covid 19 restrictions this is not possible. But there is so much going on to alleviate the suffering of homeless people thanks to volunteers and organisations locally such as The Garden House, The Light Project and the Peterborough Homeless helpers . If you feel that you could contribute in any way please contact one of these organisations. Steven, the CEO of the Light Project says the aim is to ensure that no one is left on the streets of Peterborough this Winter. Sadly Reverand Shameela has had to leave us but if you have need our Superintendent and other Methodist Ministers are available. We also had to say a sad goodbye to two of our lovely ladies who passed away in October, Doris Pike who used to help run The Bright Hour and Barbar Grant. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these lovely Ladies.

Gemma's Hearts It’s been a while since our last update. Due to the current pandemic it’s been very hard having events cancelled & also most stores are having to remove our charity pots. We want to say a very big thank you to everyone for your support through this difficult time. We have taken special measures so that we were able to check our defibrillators through Lockdown & we want to thank businesses that have also helped us by checking their own. I would also like to say a special thank you personally to everyone for your kind wishes of support to my family whilst we went through the difficult time of losing my dad. Dad’s heart was close to the charity. Just before lockdown we were asked to help The Golden Pheasant in Etton to move their defibrillator to the bus stop on the main road so that it was available to the company 24/7 in case of an emergency. This was done & installed be Turner Electricals. Also a defibrillator was installed at the Masjid Ghousia Mosque in Gladstone Street which was funded Empower and Evolve. We would like to welcome on board Josh at Barnes Electrical who has very kindly offered his labour to us for free watch this space for 2 more defibrillators going out to Fletton & Longthorpe.

Until we are able to meet again in our cosy little Chapel stay safe and God Bless. Minister: Reverend Shameela Jameelee-Samuel (01733 314147) Email: yaxleymc@gmail.com  / Yaxleymcfacebook

St Peter's Church Dear Friends I am writing this from The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, a tidal Island off the North East Coast of England. It is cut off from the mainland twice a day when the North Sea covers the causeway. It is a place that I love to come to with so much nature and beauty but there is also such a rhythm to this place as everything is dependent on the tides. I am writing this at the start of October and so it is difficult to know what the rules and regulations will be by November. I am in a part of the world that has been quite badly hit by Coronavirus, the island that I love looks a little bit different at the moment, but the rhythms of the tides don’t change. The island is known as being a particularly important place for early Christianity after Irish monks settled here in the 7th Century and took the Christian Gospel from here to many places around the country. I love sitting and looking out to a small Island known as St Cuthbert’s Island and if you get the tides right you can walk out to it but you have to be careful not to get stuck as the tide comes in (which nearly happened on one occasion!) In all that has gone on in this year, sitting and watching the tides and the sunsets, reminds me of the constants that we do have in this world that some things will never change and the Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever – Hebrews 13:8. With all that is going on in the world, it can be hard to remember this. But God is unchanging even through the rocky road that 2020 has been. God is unchanging, but we have had a few changes in the life of our church: We re-opened St Peter’s Church building for worship on the 4th October and plan to hold a 9.30am Service of Holy Communion in person every Sunday. You will however need to book in as such, as we can only get a certain amount of people in the building safely. If you would like to attend a service, please let me know at yaxleyvicar@gmail.com or 01733 248690/07498 230858 or contact Laura in our parish office saintpetersyaxleycomms@gmail.com or 07939 449255. Our 11am service continues online on our St Peter’s Church, Yaxley YouTube Channel. As the nights become darker earlier, we have stopped our open church on a Thursday evening for private prayer. We have also decided to postpone Alpha until 2021, but will let you know dates. As we live in a changing world with an unchanging God, may you know His comfort, peace and presence with you in this month. With every blessing Rev Sarah

Volunteers needed to listen to children read in local primary schools after lockdown Our reading volunteers are going to be desperately needed following the Coronavirus pandemic. Thousands of children won’t have had enough reading practice during lockdown. In a normal year, one in four children leave primary school unable to read well. Most children will have missed a term of school, so the reading gap is now even wider. Children who struggle with reading are more likely to live in poverty and be unemployed as adults. School readers needs more volunteers in your area to support children’s reading and prevent them falling further behind. If you want to make a difference to a child’s life, apply to become a School reader. No qualifications are needed; just a love of reading and some spare time each week. To join us, please visit the website www.schoolreaders.org/volunteerapplication-form or call 01234 924111 for further information.

With every blessing, Rev Sarah (Vicar of St Peter’s, Yaxley) 01733 248 690 / 07498 230 858

Lethal Lockdown - 14 November

Yaxley Amateur Drama group produce interactive murder mystery movie to helpthe group survive through the pandemic. ‘Lethal Lockdown’ The COVID-19 pandemic has meant that theatres and live venues are unable to open and operate as normal. The theatre industry is struggling, and this is even more so for local theatres who rely on local audiences to keep the groups, shows and venues running.

group website, they will then be able to watch the movie and try to guess who the murderer is. The murderer will then be announced via a link later in the evening. Audiences send in their answers via email after watching the show and the winner will be contacted that evening via email.

One group has overcome this problem by using the pandemic to their advantage.

‘Lethal Lockdown’ is fully interactive and allows the group to reach a wider audience during the Pandemic. Only one view per household needs to be purchased and families and friends can get together to watch and join in with the guessing.

The very talented group member, Diane Pickett, has written and directed an interactive murder mystery movie, set during the lockdown. The movie has been filmed in the group members gardens, via mobile phones in their houses, via zoom and out on location. Diane said ‘We are doing something that no other amateur group has done, and it is exciting to be doing something very different from our usual live shows’ ‘Lethal Lockdown’ is being sold as a pay per view show that will be aired on 14th November. It was important to the group to do something during the pandemic as at this time of year they would normally be rehearsing for their annual panto which they have never missed in the groups 40-year history. ‘The group is like one big family and so not only does this help keep the group surviving, it also means that the members still feel part of something and have something exciting to do during these time’ Diane. The tradition dates back to Victorian times, when the family would gather together to stir the Christmas pudding the Sunday before advent began. The opening words of the Book Of Common Prayer, read on this Sunday before Advent, are ‘Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord’, which is probably where the name came from. Originally Christmas pudding contained 13 ingredients said to represent Jesus and his disciples. It is stirred by each member of the family from East to West, to remember the Wise Men that visited Jesus in the Nativity Story. This is the point where you make a wish though no-one knows when that was added to the tradition. Charms were often added to the pud and said to bring luck if you found them in your portion on Christmas Day. Historically the lucky charms were a silver coin for wealth, a wishbone for luck, a thimble for thrift, a ring for marriage, and an anchor for safe harbour. Later coins were often used instead. As needing expensive emergency dental treatment is definitely NOT considered lucky it might be wise to forgo that particular tradition nowadays or at least give your serving a thorough inspection before you tuck in. The traditional sprig holly on top of the pud was said to represent the crown of thorns worn by Jesus on the cross. Holly and its berries are extremely toxic so it might be better to stick to artificial greenery. As to why we set fire to the pudding, no-one seems to know. One theory is that the flames represent the power of Christ, another is that Christian traditions mingled with the midwinter festivals of light, and the pudding, with its high alcohol content was simply a good candidate for being ignited!

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is joining forces with local authority partners and emergency services to help keep people safe this bonfire and fireworks season.

Show Respect this Bonfire Night With many organised events cancelled across the county, emergency services are preparing for a busier night than usual. There is an emerging concern that more people will plan displays and bonfires to celebrate in their own gardens, which could pose significant risk for those who choose to use them. We are asking everyone to show respect this Bonfire Night. Head of Community Fire Safety, Group Commander Per Middleton, said: “Bonfire Night is historically a very popular fixture in the calendar where people come together to enjoy firework displays, however this year is very different. With the COVID-19 pandemic still with us, the organised displays we would usually enjoy cannot take place and we are concerned that some people may look to hold their own displays. “While most people enjoy fireworks responsibly, they can quickly become a disaster and, in the wrong hands, they can cause injury and damage to property. Fireworks are explosives and should be treated with respect. Only use fireworks in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the firework safety code, ensuring all necessary safety precautions are taken. “We would strongly discourage people from lighting bonfires in back gardens as they present significant risks to residents if they get out of hand. Not only this, but the smoke can also aggravate coronavirus symptoms for those that might be shielding or isolating.” “We would encourage residents across the county to think twice before having their own displays and lighting bonfires in their gardens this year. Not only do these present risks for residents and our crews, but with the pandemic still with us we all have a responsibility to ensure we don't put unnecessary strain on emergency services. Please show respect this Bonfire Night and think twice about having your own display.” Group Commander Middleton added: “Although bonfire night might look a little different this year,

6

there are still ways families can enjoy it safely. There are lots of family friendly activities people can do at home, such as watching a virtual display, or doing some crafts together to mark the occasion, without putting their loved ones at risk. “It’s also really important that residents remember the government's rule of six to help control the spread of COVID-19.” If you intend on buying fireworks for a home display, please follow the firework safety code: • Only buy fireworks marked with a CE mark • Don't drink alcohol if you're setting off fireworks • Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions carefully when using them • Light them at arms length using a taper and stand well back • Never go back to them once they are lit. Even if a firework hasn't gone off, it could still explode • Never throw fireworks, and never put them in your pocket • Respect your neighbours – don’t let off fireworks late at night and remember there are laws in place you must follow • Take care with sparklers – never give them to children under five. Even when they've gone out they're still hot, so put sparklers in a bucket of water after use • Keep your pets indoors throughout the evening Fireworks can also cause a great deal of distress to animals. In a recent survey, 62 per cent of dog owners reported their pets showing signs of distress during fireworks season, with 54 per cent of cat owners experiencing the same. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and the National Fire Chiefs Council are supporting the RSPCA’s Bang Out Of Order campaign, encouraging the responsible use of fireworks and the adoption of tighter regulations concerning their use.

Yaxley Partnership & Social Echo have for several years, with the kind support of Yaxley Scouts & Guides, been able to provide a Christmas lunch to individuals and families who were alone at Christmas, this year due to Covid-19 and the limit of 6 people this is not going to be possible.

Christmas Delivery Volunteers Needed Due to social distancing and shielding requirements, the need for support at this time of year is going to be much greater, so we have teamed up with the Admiral Wells public house in Holme to provide hot meals delivered to the door. During lockdown they supported the villages of Holme & Conington with a community shop for those who could not go to the larger supermarkets, they did home deliveries for those shielding, making sure everyone had access to essentials and also making home baked pies and cakes which were on sale in their shop. Now at Christmas they have offered to cook these Christmas meals for us in their pub kitchen, giving up their own family Christmas, so that our volunteers can deliver them out to those in need of a little festive cheer. We are looking for volunteers for Christmas day to deliver the hot food out, we will also need people on Christmas Eve to assist in the preparation of the veg etc, this will be done again at the Yaxley Scout & Guide HQ who have kindly offered us their kitchen for this, if you would like to volunteer please email us on volunteer@yaxley.community make the subject heading Christmas Volunteer or call on 01733 794511. If you know someone who is going to be alone this Christmas and would benefit from and enjoy a home cooked hot Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings, maybe someone who is still shielding, or cannot travel like they would usually. Maybe its you that is going to be at home this Christmas and would love a home cooked meal for Christmas day. Please contact us on 01733 794511 or email us at support@yaxley.community making the subject heading Christmas Meal.

Christmas Magic at Peterborough Cathedral 2.30pm and 7.30pm, Saturday 12 December Christmas Magic, the city’s favourite Christmas celebration, is set to return to Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday 12 December. After an uncertain few months, with no large-scale live performances in the city - or indeed anywhere - this is fantastic news for Peterborough and its multi-award winning choirs Peterborough Male Voice Choir and Peterborough Voices, and a wonderful opportunity for them to return to performing with one of their best-loved events of the year! Now in its tenth successful season, and its third with the stunning backdrop of Peterborough Cathedral, the everpopular Christmas extravaganza has become an established high point of the festive season in the city. With a 2.30pm matinee for the whole family to enjoy as well as an evening performance at 7.30pm, there’s something for everyone young and old, so be sure to bring the kids and the grandparents too! Expect to hear festive favourites like Most Wonderful Time of Year, When a Child is Born White Christmas, Little Saint Nick, The Christmas Song, Santa Baby, Winter Wonderland, It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas and many more, to get your Christmas celebrations off to a flying start! Showcasing performances from Peterborough Male Voice Choir and Peterborough Voices, Christmas Magic will also feature Peterborough Festival Brass with instrumental classics like Sleigh Ride.

The choirs’ director William Prideaux says “Christmas Magic is a wonderful opportunity for us to have fun, celebrate and put on a fantastic show for our home audience, who give us such fantastic support throughout the year. It’s the icing on the cake to perform in the stunning setting of Peterborough Cathedral and - this year more than ever - we’re looking forward to digging out our Christmas jumpers and presenting a really memorable afternoon and evening of festive fun for all the family!” A revised, covid-secure seating plan means that availability is limited, with fewer than five hundred seats across both performances, and they’re selling faster than ever before with over thirty percent of these already booked! So…don’t miss out, get your tickets today and take advantage of early bird prices, available until 1st October. After this year, we all need something wonderful to look forward to!

younggazette Holme Village Pre-school The children have all settled back in very well at the preschool. They have enjoyed playing with their friends, singing, dancing and making the most of the outdoor area when the weather allows. The children recently took a walk to the postbox to drop in a get well soon card for a friend. They enjoyed spotting planes, cars and bikes, as well as listening to the sounds around them. The children have also enjoyed drawing funny pumpkins and talking about Halloween. We have had a number of new children join us this term, which means that we are almost at full capacity. We do still have a few spaces for 3 and 4 year olds.

William de Yaxley CofE Academy School Governors Wanted We are looking for someone to be a School Governor who can positively contribute to the work of the Governing Body in raising standards of achievement for all pupils at William de Yaxley CofE Academy. Further information can be found on our School website www. williamdeyaxley.cambs.sch.uk

Holme Church of England Primary Academy “Pupils are a joy….They mix happily together at breaktime and lunchtime and move in a very orderly manner around the highly attractive school environment….Pupils have a very strong work ethic…” (Ofsted, ‘Good’ school judgement, March 2017). “There is an outstanding sense of valuing all as precious children of God” (SIAMs Church Inspection, ‘Outstanding’ Church school judgement, January 2018). We are a small, inclusive, primary school in the beautiful village of Holme. We have excellent teaching across the school with children making strong progress from their starting points. Our recent KS2 SATs outcomes for Yr 6, including 100% for reading, place our school significantly above the national average, meaning that our children leave primary school well equipped for their secondary education. We provide a rich, varied curriculum utilising our many outdoor spaces. We care deeply about each and every one of our children and work hard to ensure that each one reaches their potential. Our spacious EYFS classroom has immediate access to our newly revamped outdoor area. Our reception class has a maximum of 21 children. Due to restrictions we will be welcoming parents via virtual tours. Please telephone the school office for further details. We also have places in some other year groups. Please call the school office for details. School office : 01487 830342 www.holme.cambs.sch.uk

The children are showing such great awareness and responsibility by demonstrating fantastic handwashing skills which along with lots of other measures is helping to keep everyone in school safe.

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School Everyone at the Baby Unit has enjoyed reading the 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' story book. The children have explored sensory experiences from the story such as walking through 'the swishy swashy grass,' and 'splish sploshing through the water' to find the bear! We have limited spaces left to start with us this academic year; we are now booking places onwards from September 2021. Folksworth Pre-School Autumn is truly here with us and already our children have settled into preschool life beautifully. The children have been fascinated with the changing seasons, making kites on windy days and building homes for hibernating mammals. As we move into November we will come together to reflect and remember those who sacrificed their lives for us all during remembrance. During our walks around the village we have been noticing nature’s changes, as we get ready for the coming winter. We still have a few sessions available, so please contact us on 07542 172075 if you wish to discuss a place.

William De Yaxley School My name is David French and I am the Vice Chairperson for William DE Yaxley Local Governing Body. I wanted to share how I became a governor at WDY and encourage others to come forward. Just over two years ago, I noticed an advert in the Gazette asking for community volunteers. Coincidently, I had just been having a conversation with my family about how I had completely failed on a number of new year’s resolutions; one of which was to do something for my community. This seemed like the perfect chance to give something back. Following a conversation with the Head teacher and Chair, I was asked to attend meetings to see if I could be of any support. The meetings are held every term and are really enjoyable. Regardless of your background, education, skills or experience, every member has a part to play. In fact, the more diverse the group, the better. We challenge the school on what they are doing and play the role of a critical friend. We look at the work the school does through a different lens and this helps them reflect on the work they do. I would urge anyone with an interest in supporting their community to come forward and contact the school for an informal discussion. Whether you work in business, are a full-time parent or retired; everyone has something to offer.

It takes a village to raise a child… At Folksworth School, we often talk to our children about the importance of community, the need to help others and to celebrate the ways in which we all have different talents and skills. Well, now it is your turn… We are looking for a Governor to join our team. If you are someone who feels passionate about helping young children to learn, grow and flourish in a Christian environment, you may be just the person we are looking for. You do not need to come from an education background, in fact it is actually better if you bring business skills with you, such as HR and finance. You will join our strong team of existing Governors, and help us all to provide the highest standards of education and care that we can for our children. If you would like to find out more about how you can help shape the future of this thriving school, please contact chair@folksworth.cambs.sch.uk or call us on 01733 240562

To further support this the school has launched a new campaign called the ‘5-minute walking bubble’ which encourages families to create a 5-minute protective walking bubble around our school so that everyone can travel safely and actively into school. Often the area outside the school is busy in the morning and at the end of the day so the campaign encourages alternative methods such as walking and scooting. We are also advising parents to simply park 5 minutes away from the school grounds and walk the rest of the way to prevent congestion and allow children to filter into school rather than arriving at the same time to support social distancing of parents/carers, which has been very successful. Parents have been extremely supportive of this and have been sending us pictures of the alternative methods used to get to school which we are really enjoying seeing! In our last article we reported that one of our very own Yaxley Hero’s has been raising money for a very worthy cause. Poppy Maxwell decided that she wanted to run a marathon in stages over the summer holidays, which she has done with ease. We can now reveal that Poppy has surpassed all of our expectations and has raised an astounding £2660.50 by running a total of 42km! We are extremely proud of Poppy and we cannot thank her enough for supporting one of our members of staff which in turn has raised a substantial amount of money for a very worthy cause. We would also like to thank the local families and community who have supported Poppy by donating to her just giving page. If you would like to donate to add to Poppy’s fantastic fundraising please visit https://fundraise.cancerresearchuk.org/page/amys-breast-cancer-researchfundraising-page-20 Normally at this time of year we would be advertising school tours to prospective parents. Sadly, this year we are unable to do this. If you have a child due to start school in September 2021, we would like to hear from you. Check out our new school website www.yaxley.cambs.sch.uk , give call on (01733) 240918 or email the school office@yaxley.cambs.sch.uk to find out more about us. The YIS team x

Guiding is well and truly back! The Government gave us the Go-Ahead at the end of September to meet face to face indoors – youth organisations are allowed to meet in groups of up to 15 with leaders. After a lot of paperwork and meetings and hard work by representatives of both Scouting and Guiding the HQ building has been designated Covid-secure and at the beginning of October the building was able to open its doors again, with a lot of extra rules of course. 2nd Yaxley Guides were quickest off the mark followed by 1st Yaxley Brownies and by the end of October 6 out of the 8 Yaxley Girlguiding Units will have met in person, with the remaining two Units making preparations to return after half term. Some of the Units are offering a blended Guiding experience with online meetings alternately with face to face. Thank you to all the volunteer leaders who have helped to make this happen for our girls. Covid rules mean that we need more leaders present than usual – 1st Yaxley Guides (Tuesdays) could really use an extra helper to cover work-related absence and spread the load – if you could help out by attending a meeting or even just by taking on some of the paperwork and accounts for this unit please get in touch. You can find out more on the website www.girlguiding.org and when you’ve had a look there is a link to the registration site for girls to join at any age from 5 to 18, and also for adults to volunteer for whatever you have time for. I am more than happy to chat to anyone- girl, parent or volunteer about getting involved in Guiding, or if you register on the website we will get in touch with you – My number is 01487 831451 Janice Osborn District Commissioner, Yaxley e: janiceo.girlguiding@gmail.com

State pension age hits 66 and set to rise further The age at which most people start to receive the state pension has now officially hit 66 after steady rises in the qualifying age in recent years. by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants Men and women born between 6 October, 1954, and 5 April, 1960, will start receiving their pension on their 66th birthday. For those born after that, there will be a phased increase in state pension age to 67, and eventually 68. It comes as the chancellor vowed the "triple lock" pledge is safe. Under this pledge, the state pension increases each year in line with the highest of average earnings, prices (as measured by inflation) or 2.5%. Coronavirus and the furlough scheme is set to distort the calculations for average wages and could mean one bumper year of pension increases. This has led MPs and economists to discuss how this could be smoothed out. But, when asked by LBC radio whether the triple lock was safe, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: "Yes, our manifesto commitments are there and that is very much the legislative position. The full state pension for new recipients is worth £175.20 a week. To receive the full amount, various criteria including 35 qualifying years of national insurance must be satisfied.

ANDY SELF-STORAGE

The age at which people receive the state pension has been increasing as people live longer, and the government has plans for the increase to 68 to be brought forward. However, the increases have been controversial, particularly for women who have seen the most significant rise. Campaigners claim women born in the 1950s have been treated unfairly by rapid changes and the way they were communicated to those affected. Some of those involved in the campaign recently lost a legal challenge, claiming the move was unlawful discrimination.

How to Choose a Dog Groomer Recommendation is everything. Ask friends and family for recommendations. The chances are if you have a dog-loving friend who is happy with her groomer, you will be too. The British Dog Groomer's Association is part of the Pet Care Trade Association (a membership body for pet care specialist businesses). They have a list of groomers that they have accredited to a set standard, which aims to provide quality assurance to owners. There are written and practical tests that the groomer has to pass to gain this accreditation.

By Louise Addison

Groomers are not actually required to hold any qualifications, but the BDGA and RSPCA recommend that you only use those that do; the most recognised qualification route for dog groomers in the UK is the City and Guilds qualifications. Ask to see any certificates. Finding a groomer that belongs to a trade organisation provides extra peace of mind. Groomers can join the British Dog Groomers Association (BDGA), through which they can keep up with trends on safety, health and other issues related to grooming through continued education, training and support.

A good groomer will ask for proof of vaccination before using their services, to stop the spread of contagious diseases between dogs. If it is a large establishment there should be sufficient staff to look after the needs of the animals in their care. A single groomer running on an appointmentonly basis should leave enough time for each grooming session. Be sure to discuss any special needs your pet has, such as sensitive skin, or a nervous disposition, and then ensure that you are happy that the groomer will cater for them. Many dogs don't like having their paws touched. Ask the groomer how they would handle this.

Meet the groomer with your dog before employing them. You need to like and trust them and be confident that they will look after your pet. Ask questions. Do they use rewardbased training methods to make the experience positive for the dog? Are the facilities clean and secure? Above all it should be a place where you feel comfortable leaving your pet.

Finally be realistic about price. A bargain price may not be such a bargain if the job is shoddy or worse, leads to an expensive visit to the vet.

Check all references and ask to see a copy of their police check or CRB certificate, to check that they do not have a criminal background. Ask to see evidence they have insurance to cover your pet in case of an emergency.

Garden jobs this winter Winter is a great time for us to take stock, tidy up, protect plants and plan ahead, the sun might not be out but gardening is still good for the soul.

Daddy Longlegs invasion

Winter can feel like a gloomy time in the garden. The flowers of summer are a distant memory, the rain is here to stay and the change of the clocks has put paid to any hope of working in the evenings. However, there is still much to be done. Here are some ideas to keep you busy and prepare the foundation for a great spring and summer next year.

Garden jobs for November Plant preparation, Dead Head and Maintain If you haven’t already, make sure your perennials are cut back before the frosts but leave some as they are for wildlife to enjoy the seeds and places to hide in winter.

Keep off the Grass Although grass is evergreen it is dormant in winter, so try to avoid walking on it or you will damage it.

Protect Vegetables and Plants Add cloches to winter salads to protect them from the weather and pests and wrap pots of half-hardy plants in bubble wrap or fleece. Bring tender plants indoors or put them in a greenhouse if you have one.

Get Digging If you have clay soil now is the time to dig the beds but hold fire if the ground is sodden or after a frost. Digging now allows the frost to break up the soil over the winter, improving the structure. As long as your beds aren’t seriously compacted there is no need to double dig. If you have a sandy soil it’s best to wait until spring to dig as your beds will be more prone to moisture loss thanks to their free-draining nature.

Tipula paludosa larva (c) Roger Key

Over the past month we have been plagued by stories of massive daddy longlegs invasions in the media, something that is in fact raised most years.

Just to be clear we are here talking craneflies and not daddy longlegs spiders or daddy longlegs harvestmen. Craneflies emerge en masse at the back end of autumn and appear to be everywhere. They are, however, totally harmless, not even possessing a mouth with which to bite and the supposed sting some carry is their ovipositor, used for laying eggs in the ground in grassland/lawns. The life expectancy of the adult cranefly is just 24 hours as they can neither eat nor drink. They have one purpose only in life – reproduction. A day to find a mate and lay the eggs that in a year’s time will spawn a fresh brood of craneflies. A year crawling around amongst grassroots for 24 hours in the sun. This is a bit like flying ant day in that all the craneflies need to emerge at once to be sure of finding a mate. It also provides a late autumn boon of food for birds, hedgehogs, fish and frogs as they feast on the spent bodies of the craneflies. To us they have perhaps little purpose and just nuisance value, but to nature they are a vital plank in winter survival for so many of our adored garden visitors.

Look after the wildlife Birds will appreciate nuts, seeds and fat balls left out for them this winter. (D&A Sanders Pet Shop has a great selection). Remember to freshen up water regularly and ensure it doesn’t freeze over. Keeping an area of your garden untidy, with a pile of logs and fallen leaves, makes a perfect hedgehog house.

Add Nutrients Add compost or well-rotted manure to your beds now for healthier plants next year

Plant Bulbs There’s still time to get bulbs in the ground in November to guarantee winter colour from January onwards. Choose a mixture of varieties and plant in clumps, so that you get a good effect.

Tipula lateralis agg. (c) Aled Jones

foodguide Easy-Peasy Beef Wellington A delicious dish to warm us up, but did you know why its called Beef Wellington? The Duke was given his title after defeating Napoleon Bonaparte the year before, and not long after he became Prime Minister. Such an iconic character needed immortalising, so (naturally) they named a pastry ensconced beef dish after him. ... and also the finished dish looks a bit like a wellington boot, hence the name. Enough of the history lesson let’s get cooking! When cooked correctly these ‘cheaper’ joints can be equally as tasty. A firm favourite at home, here is my take on Beef Wellington, serves 4. Ingredients

FOOD GUIDE Eat in, takeaway and delivery

½ lb mushrooms ½ onion 2 tbsp butter Salt and pepper 4 oz smooth pâté 1 tbsp oil 1½ lb beef tenderloin Salt and pepper; to taste 1 pack frozen puff pastry Method 1 Puree the mushrooms and onions together in a food processor. Melt  the butter in a skillet over medium heat, add the mushroom and onion mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is dry. Add salt and pepper to taste and mash in the pâté. Transfer the stuffing to a bowl and chill in the refrigerator. 2 Heat the oil in a skillet over high heat. Add the beef and sear on  all sides. Remove the beef from the skillet and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in the refrigerator until cold.

 3 Roll out chilled puff pastry into a rectangle large enough to enclose the beef. Spread the dough with a generous layer of stuffing, place the beef on top and spoon another bit of stuffing on the beef. Wrap the pastry to enclose the beef and stuffing and place the Wellington in the refrigerator to chill for at least 15 minutes.  4 Preheat oven to 220C/425F. Place Wellington in oven and immediately lower heat to 175C/350F. Roast for about 20 minutes AUTHENTIC INDIAN AND NEPALESE CUISINE

thebiggeek Halloween & Dia de los Muertos I don't know what it is, but as soon as October hits, I get super excited. Christmas is on its way, but before then is Halloween; or All Hallows Eve as it is formally known, and then the day after is the Mexican Traditional Holiday of Dia de los Muertos; Day of the Dead to you and I, a holiday I am increasingly obsessed with. The thought of dedicating 2 days for purely remembering and celebrating your friends and family who have passed over is so edearing, and how they celebrate is truly a spectacle. It is most definitely worth reading more about Both of these holidays have given us some amazing films, both for children and for adults. Some blur the lines between kids and adults, but there truly are some amazing films to enjoy over the Halloween weekend this year. Below I have detailed my Top 10 Children and Adults Halloween & Dia de los Muertos films.

Childrens Top 10 Hocus Pocus – Is it even Halloween with the Sanderson sisters reaking havoc in Salem? Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy MAKE Halloween, for adults and kids alike Ernest Scared Stupid – Ernest P. Worral saving Halloween? Brilliantly funny and also a little bit jumpy! The Book of Life – The best Dia de los Muertos film out there, sorry not sorry Coco. Heart, beautiful & authentic music and solid casting. Corpse Bride – Beautiful and moving. Tim Burton at his best. Monster House – Well written and brilliantly delivered. Scary and funny for all. Casper – The friendly ghost never fails to hit the spot! The Nightmare Before Christmas – Jack Skellington rules Halloween and wants more...stunning and really captures the audience. The Witches – Angelica Houston scores as The Grand Witch, hell bent on punishing children. A fantastic right of passage for all children. Goosebumps – Live action film based on the books of the same name. Jack Black hits gold in this amazing film. A must watch The House with a Clock in it's Walls – Jack Black again, giving an excellent performance about a young family with a secret...

Adults Top 10

Beetlejuice – Michael Keaton as the titular character, looking to cause mayhem and mischief to the newly deceased Alec Baldwin & Geena Davis, as well as a young family who move into their house Ghostbusters – Do I really need to explain this one? An absolute classic. The sequel is just as good too! Halloween (1978) – The Original cannot be touch. Michael Myers stalks the residents of Haddonfield looking to finish off his bloodline. Did you know? The Michael Myers mask was made from a cast of William Shatner's face. Scream – A Wes Craven classic and the spawn of all the Ghostface masks... clever, thrilling and enthralling. The Amityville Horror – Based on a true story, Margot Kidder and James Broland move into a house where the previous owners were murdered. House of 1000 Corpses – Captain Spaulding leads his disgusting family on a slaughter fest on any unsuspecting visitors Shocker – Mitch Pileggi as a murderous Death Row victim who uses electricity to jump from host to host to continue his murderous rampage Trick 'r' Treat – Interwoven paths of several different people on Halloween leads to one haunting outcome Event Horizon – Gore fest ensues when a lost Spaceship returns, with no crew...Sam Neill is genuinly sinister in this. A Nightmare on Elm St – Freddy is out to get you. Your dreams are his playground. Classic film There are so many others that can be added to these lists... what are your go to films this Halloween? Volux at The Cosmetic Clinic

As we age our face loses volume - sometimes quicker in certain people. This contributes to the lines deepening and making us look older or sad. The deep lines from the nose to mouth (known as Nasolabial lines) can be softened considerably and the lines which go from the sides of the A B mouth to the chin (known as Marionette lines). These are caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin by over exposure of the sun for many years, weight loss and of course ageing etc. Fortunately, these lines can be softened and made less prominent which makes you look fresher A B and younger as the dermal filler helps stimulate the collagen again as well as plumping up the areas treated which is a big boost for your confidence and self-esteem. Volux is the latest Juvéderm filler and is designed to be used to sculpt and contour the chin and jaw area, giving facial definition by the restoration of volume. It’s now a top favourite and clients really notice the difference they see. There are other Juvéderm A Before treatment / B One month after treatment dermal fillers for the lower face too.

excellent Award for Local Garage Since setting up Excel Auto Care on Holme Road in Yaxley four years ago, things have gone from strength to strength, and now with their most recent accolade ‘Garage of The Year 2020’ as voted for by the readers of the Peterborough Telegraph, it seems that hard work really does pay off Owner Nick Heyes says “We are a very forward thinking business and are very customer focussed. We go the extra mile because we believe every customer matters - young, old, those that know nothing about cars and those that do.

“And that comes across; once they have sampled the level of service that they receive here, they come back again and don’t go anywhere else. We keep our customers happy and that has come across in the competition. We are delighted to have won.

Here’s what a few of their customers had to say:

“We have been here for four years and have not changed our strategy from day one. It’s all about

environment What is National Tree Week? National Tree Week is the UK’s biggest annual tree celebration. It was originally called Plant A Tree in ‘73, and started in (you guessed it!) 1973 in response to Dutch Elm Disease - a tree disease that stops them from getting water properly. It’s all about getting lots of communities to do more to help their local environment by planting as many trees as they can.

How did National Tree Week start? In 1973, there was a big problem with a disease called Dutch elm disease, which was killing lots of elm trees around the UK. In response, a campaign was started by Sydney Chapman and Peter Walker, two members of parliament who thought something needed to be done. It was originally a year-long campaign called “Plant a Tree in ‘73” which encouraged people in the UK to plant as many trees as they could across the year. It went so well that the next year ‘The Tree Council’ group was born to keep encouraging people to plant trees. Except now, instead of working over a whole year, we have National Tree Week every year at the end of November. It starts in November because this is when the tree planting season starts, it’s best for them to be planted as it’s starting to get cold. Even though the event only lasts for one week, tree planting season lasts right up until March.

Why are trees important? Trees are a very important part of our ecosystem. They take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and put out oxygen. They help keep our air clean which is vital to keep climate change under control. Nutrients in the soil come from trees, which helps lots of other plants grow. Hundreds of kinds of wildlife, like birds, bugs, and squirrels as well as other kinds of plants all live in or on trees. Without them, countless animals would lose their homes or sources of food. Plus, trees help protect us from extreme weather. Their long roots and canopy of leaves help prevent flooding and stop soil eroding. Big leaves provide lots of shade when it's very hot and provide shelter when it's very cold, so local temperatures are less extreme. Oh, and we mustn't forget - they look beautiful doing it!

How can I celebrate National Tree Week? The main focus of National Tree Week is planting more trees, and there’s a lot you can do both in school and in your community. If you have space, why not plant some of your own trees together? Getting to have a direct hand in planting trees is a great learning opportunity and a lasting memory.

Best practice for tree planting events with social distancing https://treecouncil.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Bestpractice-for-socially-distanced-tree-planting-events.pdf

Not every school has the space to plant lots of trees themselves of course. You could get in touch with your local council by writing letters and asking questions about what is going on nearby. The Tree Council was set up after 1973’s original campaign and is a great source of information for what activities are going on in your area. If you’re wanting a less hands-on approach, there’s plenty you can do in class or at home to encourage children to celebrate this week. This is a great opportunity for teaching different kinds of trees, which ones are most common in your area, and how they can tell the difference. The aim of this week is to help make people aware of the environment around them and help them think about how they can keep it safe and sustainable.

As the colder weather sets in – winter proofing your property can be kinder to the environment and your pocket. At this time of year, the elements can take their toll on the home; we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. Your driveway may have also lost its summer sparkle and be in need of a deep clean. But the changing of the seasons is a popular time for rogue doorstep traders to avoid hibernation and inflict their own kind of winter misery on unsuspecting homeowners. Trading Standards always advise to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash up front, and more often than not, it will be for work which is unnecessary. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card – if you begin to feel vulnerable or intimidated - and say you will contact them at your convenience should you need their services. You can then check their contact details or ask a family member or friend to do so on your behalf. However, there are some simple but effective ways you take steps to winter proof your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare:  Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage.  Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in some draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps and faucets don’t leak.  Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently.  Get a boiler service. Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns.  Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows - so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future.  Sweep your chimney. If your chimneys are in use, make sure that they get swept every year. This will remove the build-up of dirt and grime from your chimney walls. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs that still need planning in before the festive season, www.safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. We have a range of professional, recommended and reliable trades from chimney sweeps, boiler maintenance, electricians, roofing specialists, plumbers, tree surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs, and all in line with Covid-19 safety guidelines.
