November is the month of fireworks and bonfires, so if you're planning your own occasion, stay safe, but if you want to venture out to a professional display, the East of England and Three Horseshoes, both have fireworks for you to enjoy this year. November is also a month for Remembrance Day which is marked by events such as memorial services, church services and parades. Read more about our lost generations, our local Poppy Appeal and Yaxley's Remembrance Day Parade on page 19. This is also the time of year when the countdown to Christmas commences. Please support all the local businesses over the coming festive season. And particularly, perhaps, this is a time to consider the importance of our Post Office services. A survey of 1,000 post office workers by the National Federation of SubPostmasters (NFSP) found that 22% are planning to close, hand on their business, or downsize over the next year as they go without holidays and take on extra jobs to make ends meet. It is, therefore, with great relief, that in measures to prioritise our local postal services, Yaxley Post Office will now operate increased hours in a relocation to the SPAR in the heart of our community. Don't forget to check out the Yaxley Gazette Facebook group, it has lots of news that happens in the area and a great way to discuss local topics. Our community is really thriving and it's great to be a part of it, but please remember to support local businesses and shop local. And always let us know if you are investing in the local area, it would be great to hear your story.

HOLME WI ‘Wired’

Alison McGuinness, President

October is our Members Night, when our members volunteer to run our meeting instead of our committee This year we were treated to the Will from Chicken Wired. Will set up Chicken Wired after trying to find some relief from revising for exams he started moulding chicken wire into shapes and found how it easy was to make sculptures. Some of his creations were on display, and we were assured easy birds, bees and fish only take 10 minutes to create, we will see. Although the intricate rabbits, horses, ET and Olaf from Frozen looked very complicated. Although true to his word it was much easier than expected and all our members were soon quickly snipping and bending wires and birds, bees and the more adventurous dinosaurs were soon springing up. Will now spends his time travelling to schools and groups around the

country demonstrating the skills and teaching them how to create sculptures. It is particularly good for children as it gets their imagination working and the snippers and pliers are not sharp and safe to use. It was a lovely evening, everyone was concentrating hard and some lovely sculptures were made, everyone went home with the items they had made. There were some lovely cheesy scones and courgette cake served too, very nice! Anyone interested in joining, please do come along and see what we are all about and what we get up to, new members are always welcome. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm.

Move for Yaxley Post Office to safeguard service and longer hours

Although just because it had been the summer holidays, guiding didn’t stop. First Yaxley Guides went to CamJam, a Cambridgeshire International Guiding and Scouting event, loads of activities and camping, and despite the weather had a great time. For my pack 1st Yaxley Brownies, we have quite a few new Brownies start this term, along with a new leader and a new young leader, and we are now introducing the new Guiding programme of badges and activities updated to reflect modern society. The girls have really embraced it, and we have had lots of fun on the way. Activities such as making compasses out of paper clips,

magnets and bottle tops, and packing a suitcase to understand what you can and can’t take with you, depending on which country you are going to around the world. We also have had a trip to Sacrewell Farm which the girls and of course the leaders really enjoyed. As always we are looking for volunteers to join our leadership team at all age groups, you don’t need any experience. I started helping at Guides first just as a volunteer a couple of years ago when I retired then moved to Brownies as an assistant leader, but we have volunteers from all age groups 14-70 so if you can spare some time to make a difference we’d love to here from you.

NEW LOCATION SPAR, 9-11 Broadway Shopping Centre, Malting Square, Yaxley, PE7 3JJ

The Post Office is planning to relocate Yaxley Post Office to SPAR, Broadway Shopping Centre, to safeguard service to the area Post Office services will be provided from a Post Office counter alongside the retail counter. The opening hours will be Monday to Sunday: 7am – 10pm. This is an extra 15 hours of Post Office service a week, including later closing every day, making it more convenient to visit. Our priority is to safeguard Post Office services to the local community. We have successfully appointed a new operator to continue to operate a Post Office service at The SPAR store, which is close by. The new branch is scheduled to open on Thursday 14 November 1pm. During the interim period alternative branches will include: Circle Farcet Post Office, 30 Main Street, Peterborough, PE7 3DB

Circle Hampton Vale Post Office, 12 Stewart by Avenue, Hampton Vale, PE7 8NJ Circle Old Fletton Post Office, 132 High Street, Old Fletton, PE2 8DP

The SPAR store is run by familyowned convenience store operator Blakemore Retail. Blakemore Retail Post Office Controller Stewert Waldron said: “As a community retailer we are delighted to offer post office services in our convenience stores; local residents can soon access a wide range of Post Office services during our shop opening hours – in excess of 100 hours a week. We are confident customers will be pleased with the flexibility and convenience of the new Post Office service.”

Damien Haydock Post Office Multiples Account Executive, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Yaxley Post Office. We are delighted to be able to safeguard Post Office service to the area in the long term. We are confident that this vibrant new-style Post Office at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs.” The Post Office is now inviting customers and interested parties to give their comments on the move in a public consultation and we are looking for feedback about accessibility, local community issues and anything that we can do to make life easier for our customers.

inspire St Peter's Church My Gran would say “the nights are drawing in now” although she would often start saying that in July or August which is a little depressing! However, as we enter November, this becomes very easy to see as even with the changes of clocks at the end of October, it is usually dark when I wake up and is certainly dark when I go to bed. The daylight seems to be there for so little of our waking time. Our seasons change and as we go into November in some ways the world seems to slow down a little, in others, we move into slightly mad panic planning and buying for Christmas. November often has a slightly sombre feel in the church as we move into a time of Remembrance. At the beginning of November, we celebrate all the saints – all those people who have gone before us, or maybe those saints that we know in our lives today. We also

remember All Souls, thinking of those loved ones who have died, and we see no longer. This year on Sunday 3 November 3pm we will be holding an All Soul’s Service or Service of Remembering those who have died and who we miss. Letters have been sent out to relatives of those people in our village where our retired clergy have taken a local funeral this year, but everyone is welcome to this service. If you would like the name of your loved one read out in the service, then please do let me know. Sunday 10 November we will commemorate Remembrance as we remember those who lived and died in service of our country. Do please join us at any of our services that day at 9am, 11am and 3pm.

With every blessing in this season Rev Sarah (Vicar) T: 01733 248690 / 07498 230858 E: vicar@saintpeters.co.uk

Of course, there will be our delicious homemade cakes and scones, but there will also be a raffle, book stall and tombola and maybe a chance to pick up an early Christmas present. Come along and join us for a fun morning. Our Harvest Festival last month was a joyful service led by our new Minister. Over the last few years we have donated all of our Harvest produce to the foodbank. This means, of course, it has to be non-perishable items. A few days before our service we were advised by the people who

work at the foodbank that there was a shortage of tin fruit and rice pudding and so, from the number of these tins amongst our bountiful display, I imagine our local shops found a few empty shelves recently. The total amount we were able to contribute to the foodbank was an amazing 85.5 kilo (that's over 13 stone)! Although this is a great result, we realise that there is such a desperate need for ongoing support for those who are struggling and we continue collecting items for this cause.

Farcet C. of E. Primary School It has been a busy half term here at Farcet with some great learning experiences both inside and outside of the classroom Our Year 5 and 6 Class visited the house and grounds of a member of Farcet community, where they learnt about the different trees in her garden. They finished the visit with some chocolate cake and ice-cream which they all enjoyed very much. We would like to thank Veronica for having us. Year 1 and 2 children in our Edison Class have really enjoyed their Muck, Mess and Mixtures topic. They have been inspired to paint in the style of the artist Jackson Pollock and produced some highly effective pieces of art.

Our Year 3s and 4s in Brunel Class have been archaeologists this half term, they explored what people ate during the Stone Age by dissecting 'human waste'. They found sunflower seeds, berry skins, herbs and even some fish bones. We have welcomed our new Reception intake into school and they have settled in beautifully. There has been lots of work to make our early years environment even better and the children are really enjoying the learning experiences it provides.

Folksworth Pre-School

Folksworth Primary

As we head into November and waiting for the cold starts to set in ready for the winter months, the children have been creating colourful displays of bangs, fizzes and many cozy bonfires

It is fantastic to see how enthusiastically the children have launched into our new book-based curriculum this year

The children have been telling many stories about their evenings out watching the spectacular displays. During the falling leaf season we have enjoyed lots of Autumn walks collecting what nature has to offer us at this time of year, ranging from big spiky conkers to sweet little blackberries. As we head into November we will be talking with the children about Remembrance Day and the importance of our history and heritage and what makes our little island great. We only have a few spaces available for the Easter term so if you wish to view the preschool please contact us to organise a visit.

Inspired by the Dr Seuss quote ‘The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go’, each class has their own text to study this term, with an exciting array of activities and trips to support their learning. Reception have been looking at ‘Funny Bones’, which has already brought a medical professional in to teach them about applying bandages with some very ‘funny’ results. Maple class are basing their work around ‘Paddington’, and using his adventures to discover lots about the

young gazette

younggazette sites and history of London, ahead of their trip there later this month. Oak class are using ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ to learn about concepts like melting points, and since visiting the Roald Dahl museum, they have started writing biographies of his life. Meanwhile, Elm class are going above and beyond…literally…as their text ‘Cosmic’ has taken them on a voyage of discovery among the planets, including a trip to the Space Centre in Leicester. Who says children don’t like reading these days?

Making Long Lasting Relationships

William De Yaxley

Second Hand September By Evie Trower, Year 5

Little Acorns We have enjoyed having our mummies, daddies, grandmas and grandads join us for a stay and play session The children showed them around and took part in activities. We have also been celebrating Halloween by playing with pumpkins and having Halloween party games and dancing. With Christmas approaching fast, the preschool are preparing for their Christmas concert, learning lots of songs to impress their families and friends. We have limited spaces left to start with us this school year; we are now booking places for September 2020. If you would like to come and have a look around or are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

William de Yaxley CE Academy have started another school year with many new and exciting features in the playground, such as musical instruments and the terrific new Trim Trail The whole school had a dress down day on Friday 13 September to celebrate Second Hand September, which was set up by Oxfam to encourage people not to buy brand new clothes for the whole month. The children and adults wore second hand clothes for the day to show support for the charity and the day. Buying second hand clothing is one way people can make a difference to the 11 million garments that end up going to landfill every week. Children and staff donated clothes which they no longer wore or needed and school took them to Oxfam. We collected over 12 black bin bags full of clothing! The clothes that Oxfam recycle each year weigh as much as the Eiffel Tower! The children at William de Yaxley have had a super September and are looking forward to further learning and projects in the future.

It has been a busy start to the academic year. Amongst all the busyness of classroom activity we have also reached out to parents by hosting our annual “Tears and Tissues” and “MacMillan” coffee mornings On the first day that our new Reception children started full time we hosted a special coffee morning to meet the new parents. This gave parents a great opportunity to meet staff, governors and other parents going through the same experiences. Later in the month we also hosted our MacMillian coffee morning which again was a great success. At Yaxley Infant school we work hard to forge long lasting relationships with parents and with the community. New children in Reception have been settling well and we were delighted that so many children are siblings of children who have been through the school. The efforts all our staff make to make relationships are clearly paying off.

As mentioned in last month’s article. If there are any local tradesmen or carpenters who could supply the school with softwood like pine this would be greatly appreciated for our woodworking in EYFS. If you would like to call the school on the number below we are more than happy to collect the wood. Parents who have children starting in September 2020 need to have applied by January 2020. Our next school tour is on Tuesday 5 November 1.30 - 2.30pm, you can meet our Head teacher, walk around the school and meet our current children to get their opinions. See below for dates. We would love to meet you. Please call to book a place on one of our tours.

If you are a prospective parent or would like more information about how to be a school governor, please call the school on 01733 240918 or Email: office@yaxley.cambs.sch.uk We look forward to meeting you.

Pots of cabbage!

By Rachael Leverton

November can be a bit of a grey, miserable month. My kids would call it ‘meh’. I like to inject some colour with winter bedding plants A cheerful pot by the front door can make you smile on the gloomiest morning. Obviously, the choice of plants for winter is not as large as during the summer months but there are enough varieties around to make very attractive combinations for pots. My favourite plant for winter pots has to be the ornamental cabbage. These robust beauties come in wonderful colours including cream, pink and purple – with either attractive frilly or very spiky leaves. They pair beautifully with winter-flowering pansies and hardy cyclamen. Try planting three pots of different sizes using a colour scheme which co-ordinates with the cabbages. Plant a 50cm / 20inch pot with four

large ornamental frilly cabbages surrounding a central spiky one, to give some height to the display. Then choose a smaller pot (38cm / 15inches) and plant one frilly ornamental cabbage surrounded by pink and purple winter-flowering pansies. Finally plant a small pot (25cm / 10inches) with a mixture of hardy cyclamen and white pansies. The resulting display will give you pleasure through November, December and January.

Tips Circle Select a frostproof container because these pots need to withstand wintery conditions. The most dependable pots are made of fibreglass, lead, iron, heavy plastic, or stone. Most terracotta will

DID YOU KNOW? Cabbage is an excellent source of vitamin K, vitamin C and vitamin B6

crack in cold temperatures, but some glazed varieties are frost-proof. Circle Use a good general-purpose compost. There are mixes specifically made for use in containers, which provide the essential drainage that plants living in pots need. Circle Make sure you place plenty of drainage material in the bottom of the pots. Circle A good compost will contain enough slow release fertiliser to maintain the plants for several weeks during autumn and winter. If they still going strong as winter turns to you can give them a bit of a feed, but by February or March you will want to think about replanting your pots with spring bedding.

Circle Think about gravel – I like to use a layer of gravel over the soil of my winter pots for several reasons. It gives the planted pots an attractive finish, keeps rain from splashing back on to the plants, provides some insulation for the soil and reflects light and warmth in any winter sun thus creating a little microclimate in which the plants will be happier. Circle Water them! The plants will need moisture around their roots so water as needed unless the soil in the container is frozen. Do not water frozen pots because the plants are unable to absorb the water.

Happy gardening!

Mindful of wildlife Many who crave peace find it through nature. Mention peace today and you may hear the terms ASMR and mindfulness: ASMR stands for “autonomous sensory meridian response” and describes a pleasant tingling sensation moving from the scalp and down the spine, triggered by various repetitive stimuli, such as whispering, rustling poplar leaves or reeds swaying in a breeze or the immersive quality of bird song. These trigger a physical response, a tingling, which in turn stimulates psychological responses ranging from

relaxation to sleepiness - many of us will have felt ASMR in nature and the quiet enjoyment that nature reserves promote is the perfect way to seek it out. Mindfulness is a relaxed focusing of attention on the present, sharpened by meditative exercises or by being alert to details in the environment an antidote to 21st century data overload. Seeing wildlife and nature reserves in a mindful way can be soothing, and mentally beneficial, helping put the wider world into a less jumbled and aggressive perspective.

Hate cleaning your oven?

Call the Oven Wizards A local keep fit enthusiast is all set to clean up in Peterborough, Huntingdon and surrounding areas A recent survey indicates that oven cleaning is one of the most hated chores in the home Sarah Meredith is launching her own oven cleaning business as part of the Oven Wizards franchise. Sarah has lived in the local area all of her life, and, as she knows the area really well, she believes there will be a strong demand for her services. Sarah says “I was looking for a business idea that would be something I would enjoy doing and that would provide a great service to local people. I came across the idea of an oven cleaning business and then started to research the market. I soon realised that becoming an Oven Wizard offered me a great opportunity, particularly with the support of a successful franchise brand. John Graham, owner of the Oven Wizards business said “From the first time we met Sarah, we knew she would make a great success of running an Oven Wizards franchise,

particularly because of her great passion for customer service.” John went on to explain “There is a growing demand from people who want to have their ovens professionally cleaned because it is probably the hardest and most hated job in most households “. Oven Wizards have provided Sarah with comprehensive training which will enable her to professionally clean all sorts of makes and models of ovens. As well as Peterborough and Huntingdon, Sarah also covers Ramsey, Whittlesey, Oundle, Alconbury and St Ives. A recent survey indicates that oven cleaning is one of the most hated chores in the home. Taking into account the fact that there are over 26 million households in the UK and that nearly each one has at least one oven and a hob, the growing domestic cleaning market therefore provides unlimited opportunities to delight our customers.

Remembrance

Parade

Sunday 10 November

By Stewart Howe

At the southern side of the Waterslade Road cemetery in Yaxley a memorial hewn from Aberdeen granite bears testament to the lost generations who gave their lives for crown and country Adorned with the Union and French flags, it reads “To our glorious dead, who championed our cause in the Great War, and for us made the supreme sacrifice, greater love hath no man than this”. The thirty-nine names recorded as lost during that first world war are engraved alongside a second generation of fallen who served in the second global conflict and the name of Lee Fitzsimmons who was tragically killed with a fellow soldier when a Puma Helicopter crashed in Iraq in 2007. In 2010 a further name was added, that of Polish pilot Nebojsa Kujundzic, who was killed during a routine training flight in March 1943. It was his sacrifice and the crash of his bomber in Yaxley that led to the naming of Lancaster Way. As our nation stands politically divided amidst the controversy of our departure from the European Union, we must remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to allow us to exercise our democratic rights. And as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Normandy Landings and look forward to next year’s VE Day anniversary we invite

everyone to support the Poppy Appeal and attend the parish Remembrance Parade. Poppy Appeal launch date is on Friday 25 October, Yaxley Branch will have Poppy Tables at the Co-op, Dobbies, Aldi Hampton, Morrison Cardea and Peterborough Train Station. This year’s Remembrance Parade will be held on Sunday 10 November. The parade will step off from the Yaxley Branch Royal British Legion Social Club 210 Broadway Yaxley PE7 3NR at 2.15pm. Traffic is politely asked to give way to allow the parade to make its way along Broadway to the Yaxley & Farcet War Memorial where there will be a wreath laying ceremony. The parade will then continue down Church Street to St Peters Church where a special Memorial Service will be held at 3pm. After the service at approximately 3.45pm The parade will march along Church street onto Westfield Road then up Chapel Street to the Royal British where refreshments will be served at approximately 4pm where vintage singer Rachel Bae will entertain us.

farmland

“To be a farmer is to be a student forever, for each day brings something new.” John Connel, ‘The Farmer’s Son: Calving Season on a Family Farm’ by Lisa Martin

November on the Farm

There is something very special in the air as the crisp autumn breeze moves in and as the nights draw in closer Some of us begin lighting evening log fires which crackle in anticipation of providing us with enduring warmth for the night. We pull out those wool jumpers and perhaps think of the sheep who shared their lovely wool with us. For many, it is their favourite time of the year. For us on the farm, things run a little quieter as we tend to fences, hedges and other bits and bobs that need doing. This year, we invited an expert to manage our hedges as he practices the very important countryside art of hedgelaying. This practice is the process of bending and partially cutting (otherwise known as pleaching) through the stems of a line of shrubs or small trees near ground level and arching the stems without breaking them. This is so they can

grow horizontally and be intertwined and develop further into a healthy and mature hedge. It is a fascinating countryside art and if you’d like to learn more about it please visit the National Hedgelaying Society at hedgelaying.org.uk The sugar beet is ready for harvest and as soon as we bring that in, we begin to prepare the ground to sow our winter wheat. This year’s sugar beet yields are expected to be higher than the 2018 season which is certainly a help to farmers and the British sugar industry. Hurrah! So far, our fields are growing, and the new shoots are measuring up to spec. Our ‘no-till’ drill is ensuring a concise slot in the ground keeping our soil structure undamaged by cultivation. The soil does need to be quarter of

water and a quarter of air to work well, so we are happy with this approach to our fields. November in the farming calendar brings local shows such as the East of England Agricultural Society’s ‘Winter Stock Festival’, Thrapston Market’s ‘Fat Stock Show’ and ‘The East of England Farming Conference’. We would like to invite everyone involved in the agriculture industry AND anyone interested in farming to the East of England farming conference which takes place on the 14th of November this year. It is open to all. It is set to welcome some of agriculture’s finest and most inspiring minds which will both challenge and motivate the conference attendees. For more information please go to: www.eoefarmingconference.co.uk

We’ll also be delivering the last batch of our high welfare, local, slow-grown lamb to stock freezers ahead of Christmas – order at www.villagefarm.org.uk. As well as lamb and pork, beef, duck, goose, grouse, guinea fowl, partridge, pheasant, rabbit, turkey, venison, wood pigeon, which are all at their best, the British season is still producing artichoke, beetroot, butternut squash, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkin, shallots, swede, turnips, and watercress. There are apples, pears, and quince in the orchard, and wild mushrooms, hazelnuts, and walnuts in the hedgerows. Have a wonderful November everyone, and thank you for supporting British farmers!

This is the most challenging time of year for pet owners as there are so many potential triggers of stress in animals coming up over the next few months

Comfort your pet this winter Bonfire night might be at the beginning of this month but the fireworks are far from over (much to the dismay of many pet owners), and then there is the noisy and hectic festive season – including unfamiliar faces and smells – and, of course, there’s the possibility of autumn thunderstorms and the earlier dark evenings. All of these can cause stress in our pets and while some owners will seek guidance and advice, but some pets and owners suffer through this period not knowing that help is available. Noise phobia is relatively common problem seriously affecting a pet’s wellbeing, mental

and potentially physical health. It is more common in dogs and without support it can spiral downwards with some animals who really struggle to cope taking months to get back to their normal selves. At Cromwell Vets, we want to raise awareness of potential problems ahead and provide you with the support you need to help your pet through this difficult time. There are many ways to alleviate stress including pheromone diffusers, tablets and sprays with natural calming ingredients and practical routine modifications and precautions. In our experience preparing early and a combination of methods yields the best results for pet owners.

Breathe Don’t fight the racing heart or sweaty palms, breathe into it. Place the palm of your hand on your stomach and breathe slowly and deeply. The aim is to train your mind to get used to coping with panic, which takes the fear of fear away.

Face your fears Avoiding fears makes them seem scarier. By facing them you should start to make them fade.

very anxious if we perceive our own lives as not measuring up. Real life is full of stresses; bad days and setbacks happen, and it's important to remember that life is messy.

Visualise a happy place

Don’t try to be perfect We’re surrounded by images of perfection on Facebook and Instagram. It can make us feel

Talk Sharing fears takes away a lot of their scariness. Talk to a partner, a friend or a family member, or if you don’t feel you can talk to someone you know call a helpline such as Samaritans.

If your anxiety is not getting better, please talk to your GP.

Practice closing your eyes and imagine a place of safety and calm. It might be a beach you love, or a forest, or snuggled up in bed with your puppy. Let the positive feelings soothe you until you feel more relaxed.

Using Fireworks and Bonfires Safely By Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades & Service

www.safelocaltrades.com

Don’t let cold callers give you the chills as winter sets in Winter is knocking at the door – and as the elements take a toll on your home – so do the rogue traders At this time of year, we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc with our home and garden when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. Then there’s the frozen pipes and radiators that won’t work after spending the summer months idle, to name a couple of household niggles. The effects of the elements, if and when they do their damage, are like magnets to the cowboy traders whose aim is to make even more winter misery while lining their own pockets. Our advice is to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash up front, and more often than not, it will be for work which is unnecessary. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card – if you begin to feel vulnerable or intimidated - and say you will contact them at your convenience should you need their services. You can then check their contact details, or ask a family member of friend to do so on your behalf. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs that still need planning in before the festive season, www.safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. We have a range of professional, recommended and reliable trades from chimney sweeps, boiler maintenance, electricians, roofing specialists, plumbers, tree surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs. However, there are some simple but effective ways you take steps to winter proof your home and garden,

and avoid a November nightmare or December disaster: Circle

Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage. Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draft points. Invest in some draft excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps and faucets don’t leak. Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. Get a boiler service. Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns. Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows - so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. Sweep your chimney. If your chimneys are in use, make sure that they get swept every year. This will remove the build-up of dirt and grime from your chimney walls.

Fireworks and bonfire night can be plenty of fun for all of the family to enjoy and going to an organised firework display instead of holding one at home can be a great way of supporting your local community If you do plan on using fireworks or lighting a bonfire at your own home however, please ensure you consider our safety advice below:

Fireworks

Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 Light fireworks at arm’s length using a taper, stand well back and never go back to a lit firework Circle Never throw fireworks or put them in your pockets or clothing Circle Light sparklers one at a time wearing gloves, and place used sparklers in a bucket of water Circle Never give sparklers to children under five Circle It is illegal to sell fireworks to someone under the age of 18 or to light fireworks in a public place Circle Circle

For more information on Firework Safety, visit: www.hse.gov.uk

Bonfires

Do not light bonfires in unsuitable weather conditions, particularly when windy Circle Do not leave bonfires unattended Circle Keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe handy just in case Circle Build bonfires well clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges Circle Never use flammable liquids to start the fire Circle Never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, batteries, etc Circle Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals are not hiding inside and are a safe distance away Circle Always consider the location of a bonfire or firework display, smoke drifting near or on to roads can have devastating consequences. What is Income Protection? Income Protection may well be a policy you have never heard of however arguably the policy that could help most people in their time of illness Subject to medical qualification, Income Protection will pay out a monthly income should you be unable to work due to any injury or illness. Ask yourself, would you be able to cope without a monthly income? Income Protection is different to other policies as it doesn’t specify which illnesses or injuries it will pay out for – you only need to be unable to work due to an illness or injury . The policy is tailored to your circumstances and links into your employers sick pay where applicable so your policy payments would start after your employers sick pay ends.

You can choose to have a monthly pay out to protect just your monthly mortgage payment, or to protect your committed and lifestyle expenditure. With income protection you are only able to access this policy with an advice and recommendation service as the policy is complex and there are different elements to the policy that you must consider, this is why you need an experts opinion – and this is where we come in. The policy can pay out until you get better and return to work, you die, or until the policy stops at the end of the policy term. Talk to us today about a solution to protect you, your family and your home.

If you are looking to buy a home and need help and advice on not only the mortgage but also the house buying process, please don’t hesitate to contact Heartland Mortgage Services. Money Matters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

Off-Payroll (IR35) rules go private from April 2020 In October’s Budget, the Chancellor confirmed that from April 2020 the Government will extend to the private sector the same changes to the off-payroll rules which were introduced for the public sector from April 2017 The new rules will affect businesses in the private sector which engage individuals who work through their own company – often called a personal service company or PSC. From April 2020, the responsibility

for determining the tax status of such an individual will shift from the individual’s PSC to the engager. The rules will only apply to engagers who are medium or large – small businesses will be exempt from

Certified Public Accountants supporting local businesses with cost-effective accountancy and taxation service for many years.

Circle Turnover does not exceed £10.2 million Circle Balance sheet total does not exceed £5.1 million Circle Not more than 50 employees.

We specialise in sole traders, partnerships, small limited companies and all types of self-employed businesses, as well as all aspects of accountancy and taxation, concentrating on the personal approach. Speak to Pete, any time, for a free, initial chat. T: 01733 248 180 F: 01733 248 190 E: pnbird@birdandco.ltd or info@birdandco.ltd

the changes. The precise definition of small has yet to be determined, but the Government says that they intend to use a definition similar to that in the Companies Act 2006. Under that Act, a company is defined as small if it meets two out of three of the following criteria:

Text: 07305 355595 www.birdandco.ltd

This definition will need extending so that it applies to engagers who are not set up as a limited company, such as a sole trader. The crucial point to appreciate is that the size test applies to the engager - the business taking on the worker - and not the worker’s PSC.

The Government expects that 95% of businesses will meet the definition of small and not have to apply the new measures. Where the engager is within the definition of small, the responsibility for determining the worker’s tax status under the off-payroll rules will remain with the worker and their PSC. Many workers may be nervous that if the engager determines that they should be subject to PAYE from April 2020, this could prompt HMRC to look back at the tax treatment that the worker and their PSC have adopted in previous years. We understand HMRC will not be focusing on historical cases or carrying out targeted campaigns as a result of a worker becoming subject to employment taxes for the first time from April 2020.
