Yaxley Amateur Dramatics Did you know there’s a free health walking scheme in Yaxley? Why not join the scheme for a fabulous way to enjoy the outdoors and to explore your local area.

Free health walks in Yaxley

T

he health walks are led by trained volunteers on routes of varying lengths, are a great way to improve stamina and can benefit a variety of health conditions alongside the benefits of meeting new people.

Walks will take place on alternate Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2pm and are about an hour long.

Brochures are available from the Library, your local GP surgery and most of the shops at the Broadway Centre.

Yaxley Amateur Players Youth group YAPY will be putting on performances of Roald Dahl’s magical story of Charlie and the Chocolate factory on Friday 6 November and Saturday 7 November.

New walkers are asked to turn up 15 minutes before published start times to fill in a short health questionnaire.

Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are welcome on all walks.

YAPY is the youth section of Yaxley Amateur Players and has been meeting since 1983. We accept children and young people aged 6-16 years and put on a variety of shows during the year. All members of YAPY take part in the pantomime as well as appearing in their own shows.

Currently we are rehearsing for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Muntjac: 'Bambi' or burden?

Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) were first introduced from China to Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire by the 11th Duke of Bedford in the early 20th century. However, in about 1925, these small, yet canny deer had crossed the park borders to bravely explore the countryside beyond and establish what appears to be rapidly becoming their empire.

heir secretive yet tenacious nature, the distinct lack of natural predators, short gestation periods and all year round breeding were soon contributing to the widespread muntjak poplulation explosion.

Peeping from one area of brambles or long grass before vanishing quickly into another, if startled, they will let out a harsh, slightly eerie bark, kindly alerting the rest of the deer within earshot to potential danger.

In contrast to all other species of deer in Britain, muntjac breed all year round and the does can conceive again within days of giving birth. Bucks may fight for access to does but remain unusually tolerant of subordinate males within their vicinity. They will bravely attack anything that threatens their young.

Nevertheless, the ‘Bambi’ of the forests and overgrown urban gardens muntjac is seen by some as a wolf in deer’s clothing. Although small, they can also look after themselves.

The bucks have sharp antlers, as well as tusks, which can do serious damage to a fox, dog or human.

The British Deer Society state that "unlike other species of deer in Britain, muntjac do not cause significant damage to agricultural or timber crops".

However, they are commonly reported to have devoured native woodland plants at a terrifying rate and can leave their mark of destruction on a suburban garden.

They also destroy vital bird habitats, which is a concern that Robin Wynde, RSPB Senior Policy Officer explains: "The Reeves’s Muntjac can have a serious impact on the structure of our woodlands, and in turn on the wildlife that relies on them. They browse heavily on the lower level of vegetation of woods, and the removal of plant growth at this level means a loss of habitat for declining birds such as the nightingale.”

Nevertheless, the muntjac should maybe not become a ‘scapedeer’ for all damage. Grey squirrels, (introduced from the US in the late 19th century), cause far greater havoc than the muntjac. There are others, such as foxes and badgers, that also play a significant part in the neighbourhood damage.

The most significant impact that muntjac have on human interests is actually in collisions with cars.

I doubt that the 15th Duke of Bedford will take responsibility for the mountjacs' villainous forest and garden rampages, nor the increasing number of dented vehicle bumpers, since his predecessor's beloved herd ran riot.

Ultimately, it seems that a better understanding of this fascinating species will encourage responsible and humane management of the muntjac colonisation, thereby increasing the chances for all wildlife to more viably co-exist in the future.

Yaxley Parish Council Many people will know Sue Marchant our booking clerk. Sue has recently taken a job opportunity outside of YPC following 12 years working with us, we all wish her success in her new employment. To fill this role, we welcome Sue Finch to our team, who is to start with us in October.

Grass verges While Yaxley Parish Council are responsible for a good proportion of the verges in the village, the verges on the main roads are owned by Cambridgeshire County Council who pay the Parish Council to cut three times a year. We look to provide the additional cuts throughout the year to maintain the village appearance.

Internal maintenance work to our facilities To date, our team have completed a deep clean at Queen's Park and further works are to be commenced later this year in the Austin Hall. We will also be looking to undertake any improvements required at the pavilion.

3G pitch Following an inspection of the astro turf in Middleton’s Park, highlighting the need for an expensive list of repairs which would only be a temporary holding action, the council have agreed to replace the existing astro turf with a 3G, all weather pitch. This will open up

the facility to junior players who could not play on what was an unforgiving surface for younger players. This facility should be open mid to end of October. Anyone interested in using this facility should contact the Parish office by email: bookings@yaxleypc.org.uk Cricket pitch As part of the installation of the 3G pitch, the existing cricket crease is to be given a new lease of life by renewing the astro turf.

It’s a shame to report that Yaxley cricket club and players have moved to Orton, however should there be anyone looking to start a new cricket club the parish council would certainly work with people to help maintain this sport in the village.

Queens Park The FA completed an inspection, and while pleased with the facility, they offered some advice on improving the pitches. This improvement work is to commence this autumn and will be an ongoing process through the year.

Requests for refreshments at Queens Park We are trialling hot food and drinks during match days. To date this is looking to be a success with teams. The income this brings will help maintain low price pitch hire for people.

Foxglove play area An inspection earlier this year highlighted safety concerns with the surface and the area was closed pending repair work. We are pleased to say that the area has now been resurfaced under warranty.

Cemetery Safety Inspection We are to commence inspection early November. This is to check for movement of monuments etc., in the interests of safety for all visitors. Any identified issues will be made safe as and where necessary and any issues will be reported to family members to resolve.

Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club A(Tony) Casbon Press Officer.

Time passes on relentlessly, never more so than when we bowlers are getting the sort of weather we can only normally dream about!

We drove to our return match with old favorites Oundle in Max Jones' classy motor on the scenic route (to avoid the rush hour traffic).

Passing a farm house at Washingley, Ray Bass recalled a visit there in the 40s by horse and wagon on their chapel outing! Only a mile or so further on I recalled badly bending my motorbike and side car on a terrible bend, this was in the 50s!

Oundle’s green was in perfect condition and, as usual, a top class game ensued. We managed to hold the ascendency and after a convivial end of game gathering, Captain Bruce was bearing the Challenge Cup back to Yaxley. As always, one of the best games of the season.

As promised lots of thrills from our County players, where no less than 10

competed at Ketton in the Federation Finals; namely Robert Heath and Tony Belson in the men's pairs, Joan Robinson (two wood singles), Chris Wheeler, Tony Belson and Peter Marchant Senior (two wood triples), Kath Browning and Viv Hempsell will clash with Joan Robinson and Dee Brinkman in the Senior Pairs. Chairman Graham will be competing in the Champion of Champions.

Goodwin Cup saw perfect bowling conditions with Andrew Cooper and Graham Agger getting through to Finals Day to compete against Robert Heath, Rob Dearnley, the other finalists.

Albert Rowlett, we have high hopes for Albert Rowlett in the Shield, having safely negotiated the first round.

Holme WI

Yaxley WI

We have had a very busy few weeks at Holme WI. Our meeting on 1 October was our centenary party and a great night was had by all; lots of food, a quiz and a game.

Sally, the Huntingdon and Peterborough Chairman, along with other guests also attended. Our members had also completed centenary craft artwork which is now on display in the village hall.

The first weekend was also Holme 1940s weekend, where we had a stall on the Saturday selling cakes, preservatives and craft. The stall was manned throughout the day by our members.

Next month, we will meet on Thursday 5 November at 7.30pm in the Village Hall when Sue Stephenson will be talking about the ‘Swinging Sixties’. Come along in your favourite sixties outfit.

To celebrate the centenary of the WI on 16 September, Yaxley invited members past and present for coffee and cakes at Queen's Pavilion. It was wonderful to see so many people and reminisce over old times. Many thanks to everyone who helped make it such a successful day.

At our October meeting, Pauline Salmon demonstrated Christmas decorations made from readily available materials, so our homes should be looking very festive come December.

This month's meeting will be held on 12 November at the Lancaster Club at 7.30pm. It will be our AGM and a social evening. We try to keep the business side as short as possible so visitors are very welcome.

Last year, the Poppy Appeal collected £18,000. Let's hope this year is as successful, so please dig deep!

Our summer recess with its many pleasant memories, (not forgetting Mary’s garden party), and our autumn season of concerts coming to an end, thoughts turn to our favourite events, our Christmas concerts.

This is a modern church with an ever increasing congregation and we were pleased to assist in this fundraising event, not only for the church, but for the many other active groups of the area.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service Fireworks and bonfires can be plenty of fun for all the family to enjoy.

The fire service recommends going to an organised firework display instead of holding one at home, however, if you do use fireworks or light a bonfire at home, we would ask residents to take on board our safety advice to ensure it is just their fireworks that go off with a bang: 1 Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions.

2 Light them at arms length using a taper and stand well back.

3 Never go back to a lit firework.

4 Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them.

5 Don't light bonfires in unsuitable weather, particularly in windy conditions.

6 Don't leave bonfires unattended.

7 Build bonfires well clear of buildings, fences and hedge.

8 Never use flammable liquids to start the fire, and never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, and batteries.

9 Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals are not hiding inside and are a safe distance away.

I live in Snowhills reside ntial home, and I don't know if you are aware bu we are one of the casual t ties of the government cutbacks. Due to having no more supporting pe ople we have lost our wa rden.

There are a lot of frail pe ople here who don't get out very often so a few of us have got togeth er to try and get things going on in the home.

We have bingo and carpe t curling and a quiz aftern oon ... but we need funds to get other social events like there used to be here.

What is happening here is like a lot of residential homes; a lot of the residents are giving up and just staying in their flats and we need to get them out and add some fun into the place again.

What we are hoping for is support from the local community.

We thought the best wa y to get it out there to the local people and businesses would be thr ough the Yaxley Gazette, so I hope you can help in some way...

Heroic yachtsman, Andrew Taylor, to speak on overcoming adversity

On 19 November, at Wood Green Animal Shelter near Godmanchester, Hunts Forum will be holding their AGM and are delighted to welcome this death-defying yachtsman as this year’s speaker.

H

unts Forum’s AGM this year features heroic, death defying Yachtsman Andrew Taylor as a guest speaker on the theme of ‘overcoming adversity.’

Mr Taylor was participating in the ‘Clipper Round the World Yacht Race’ when his boat met with 66 foot waves, throwing him overboard into the freezing water. He was hit with the boat's rudder and forced to battle with severe hypothermia, causing him to hear voices and hallucinate.

After almost two hours, Mr Taylor’s crew mates reached him and hauled him back on board at the third attempt.

It felt like a lifetime…

I don’t know where I got the strength to get back on board.

Mr Taylor was in and out of consciousness when coming out of the water. His legs were extremely sore and swollen. He made his recovery after six days of intense physiotherapy.

Remarkably, he went on to complete the race, his boat finishing fourth.

Hunts Forum will also be hosting a Funding Fair in the afternoon between 1- 4.30pm, where voluntary organisations can book slots with funding agencies and trusts, from Cambridge Community Foundation through to Big lottery Fund.

There will also be an opportunity to gain further advice, information, support and guidance on making funding applications.

Last year Hunts Forum assisted in generating £149,714 in funding for frontline activity.

Question: I am an employed ambulance driver on active service and I’ve been told I can claim expenses and reduce my tax – is this true?

Answer: Yes you can claim a flat rate deduction of £140, or the actual amount you have spent on specialist clothing for your job. Many employees are not aware that they could be entitled to Flat Rate Expenses.

Flat rate deductions are amounts that HMRC have agreed nationally – or sometimes locally if conditions are very different – with trade unions or other bodies. The deductions cover what’s typically spent each year by employees in different trades. Contact us to see if you’re entitled to make a claim.

Personal Savings Allowance (PSA): From April 2016, you won’t have to pay tax on interest received up to £1,000 (if you are a standard rate taxpayer), or £500 if you pay tax at the higher rate.

Therefore, to be eligible for this new allowance in 2016-17: Your taxable income needs to be less than £42,700 a year to qualify for the £1,000 PSA, or, l Your income needs to be between £42,701 and £150,000 to qualify l for the £500 PSA. l l

To facilitate this change, from April 2016 banks and building societies will stop automatically taking the 20% Income Tax from the interest earned on your non-ISA savings accounts.

Readers who receive substantial interest on their non-ISA savings should therefore take this into account. For 2016-17 their investment income could create an increase in underpayments in their tax position as they will receive their interest gross with no tax deducted. For example, there will be those who haven’t had to pay tax to HMRC because all their income was taxed at source. These people may be required to pay their tax separately in future. This could particularly affect certain pensioners and the like benefitting from the £5,000 nil “savings rate” of tax applying for 2015-16 only.

The Gunners are coming ...

ICA Sports FC are proud to announce that they will they will be working with Arsenal Ladies FC in the coming months, after being selected as an Arsenal Ladies Platinum Club Associate.

T

he FA Women’s Super League club will be supporting ICA Sports FC to dramatically increase the number of girls playing football in the city via a wide range of activities and projects.

Arsenal Ladies will be assisting the city based club with Player Recruitment, Player Development and Coach Development as well as offering significant benefits to the club and its members including the provision of tickets to Arsenal Ladies games, access to exclusive services and participation in the Arsenal Ladies Club Associate events.

ICA Sports FC will also introduce a Regional Player Development Centre, which will

run in association with Arsenal Ladies and will see ad-hoc visits from Centre of Excellence Coaches and Scouts. The first block of six sessions will run from 21st April 2016 for players from 8 to 16 years old..

In addition a Girls Football Festival will run in the Spring of 2016, that will include a minitournament, skills sessions and other fun football-based activities that local girls from 6 to 12 years old are invited to attend, whether a member of the club or not.

Kelly Smith, Arsenal Ladies Player & Assistant coach said: “It’s fantastic that there are so many girls who now aspire to play for Arsenal Ladies and this programme is a way to

The role of Healthcare Assistant/Phlebotomist My name is Hayley Chiarizia and I am a Healthcare Assistant at YGP. I joined the practice in February 2015. Previous to this I worked at a surgery in Peterborough. I have been a HCA for 8 years.

he role of the HCA has developed quite a lot over the last few years and we find ourselves being trained in new and exciting areas such as diabetes and coronary heart disease.

Advice for patients taking Warfarin We do a lot of Warfarin checks (INR – international normalized ratio.) If you take Warfarin you will know that the life of this particular drug is unpredictable. There are a couple of things that could affect your Warfarin result so here are a few pointers to bear in mind.

Be aware that the amount of Vitamin K in your diet may affect your INR result. You do not need to avoid foods rich in Vitamin K as these foods are important in your diet and may keep your Warfarin control stable.

Examples of food rich in Vitamin K include green leafy vegetables, chick peas, liver, egg yolks, cereals containing wheat bran and oats, mature and blue cheese, avocado and olive oil. Eat these foods in moderation.

Drinking cranberry juice can also affect your INR so should be avoided altogether. It is recommended you do not exceed the national

guidelines for alcohol; up to three units a day for men and two units daily for women.

If you are buying over the counter medicines including alternative remedies tell the Pharmacist that you are taking oral anticoagulant and they can advise you on medicines that are safe to take.

You should not take aspirin unless it has been specifically prescribed by your GP. It is also advisable to avoid other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like diclofenac or ibuprofen.

The correct time to take you warfarin medication is 6pm daily.

I hope some of these tips will help our patients who take warfarin – If at any time you have any questions please ask.

Phlebotomist Finally, for those of you who have not yet met Jenny, she is our Phlebotomist. Jenny’s role is to take blood samples, and like me can be found working in waiting area C. For blood tests we work on 5 minute appointment slots, so please do not ask for other things during this time or we run over on time and this could impact on other patients.

Stretton Pre-School

We had a fantastic turnout at our Halloween Spooktacular!

The children enjoyed dressing up and there were some great costumes; witches, vampires and even a shark!

It was a very successful event raising nearly £350 which all goes back into the pre-school to buy new equipment and toys for the children.

We are having two free stay and play sessions at our Main Street site in November. If you have children aged two or three, please come along on 4 November at 9.30-11am or 5 November at 1-2.30pm. Parents will need to stay with the children but there will be many different activities for the children to try, the opportunity to meet some of the staff and see for yourself the warm and friendly atmosphere at Stretton Pre-School.

Plans are underway for our Christmas Fete on Sunday 29 November from 12pm, so please save the date. We are hoping this will be our biggest event yet! We already have fifteen stalls confirmed as attending; a massive raffle; the children will be giving a concert and we are hoping that Father Christmas will make an appearance!

Yaxley Infant School Year Two children at Yaxley Infant School have been developing their enterprising skills whilst also raising money for a very worthwhile cause this term.

The children were given the task of choosing a charity to support and thinking about how they could raise money.

They decided that they wanted to support the Macmillan Biggest Coffee Morning, planning the event and giving out invites to parents and staff.

The delicious smell of baking cakes permeated throughout the school and the children had great fun decorating them.

When the day of the coffee morning arrived, there was great excitement throughout the school; the cakes were ready, the coffee was ready, the children were ready to host ...but would we get any visitors?

We needn’t have worried!

Of course, we had fantastic support from our parents and the children were amazing

hosts! The event gave them the opportunity to try out new skills. It took a while to count the money and gave the children the opportunity to practice their mathematics skills but we are pleased to announce that the total raised for Macmillan was £278.80.

The event can be summed up by a quote from Karina “I felt proud that we raised a lot of money”.

Well done to our Enterprising Year Two children and a big thank you to the parents, staff and community who supported us.

Our Year One children are now busy planning their charity fundraiser so keep an eye out for another enterprising initiative from the children at Yaxley Infant School.

axley’s embryonic heritage spine was unveiled with two plaques embedded at historically important locations within the parish (donated by Mark Oliver of Fenland Stoneworks Ltd) whilst public lectures allowed the public to learn more about the fascinating history of our village and region.

The first plaque was unveiled at the Norman Cross art gallery to mark the location of the world’s first purpose-built prisoner-of-war-camp. Local celebrity Warwick Davis along with the Friends of Norman Cross were in attendance to mark the occasion.

The second plaque was embedded at the birthplace of the founder of the Royal Astronomical Society Olinthus Gregory on Main Street. In attendance were Professor Martin Barstow, President of the Royal Astronomical Society (direct from Washington), Fenland Trust patrons Shailesh Vara MP and Andrew Burgess ARAgS FRSA and property owner Graeme Middleton.

With two more plaques scheduled in the near future and the launch of a new website and mobile app to follow, the Yaxley Heritage Spine will develop into a compelling narrative experience, chronicling the turbulent history of the village and the people who have lived here.

Three public lectures were staged at Yaxley Library as part of a programme that will be expanded greatly in 2016: Chris Carr delivered a fascinating talk entitled

FEATURE ‘An Imperial Possession: The Romans in the Central Fen’ which posed the question, did Romans colonise the Fens or was it a case of native inhabitants adopting Roman culture?

The always engaging Stuart Orme of Peterborough Museum talked about life at Norman Cross, the world’s first POW camp with the Fenland Trust bringing along examples of prisoner craftwork to illustrate the talk.

Last but not least, Don Chiswell explored the macabre activities of Burke and Hare and the body snatchers with references to Yaxley’s own resurrection men and their gruesome plot at our cemetery.

In addition to these events the Fenland Trust has been on the road with a growing museum collection, attending events at Ramsey Rural Museum, Holmewood Hall and the Great Fen. Plans for a Yaxley museum are moving forward in what is destined to be a very challenging but rewarding project.

Of course we cannot talk about local history without mentioning the Great Fen’s week long excavation of the Mark I Spitfire at Holme Fen. Congratulations to the Great Fen team, Oxford Archaeology East and the Defence Archaeology Group who oversee Operation Nightingale.

As we look forward to 2016 the Fenland Trust is working on the launch of new local history websites for Conington and Norman Cross as well as a major heritage element at Yaxley Festival 2016. Thank you to everyone who continues to support our work.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel In October we had to say goodbye to a remarkable lady. Ruby was 100 years old and was an inspiration to us all. She was a lady in every sense of the word.

Pensions and Divorce the facts We read and hear about celebrity divorces all of the time. The press is full of articles about who got the “City Apartment” or “Villa in Marbella”, but what about the less glamorous, but often more valuable asset – The Pension?

W

hen couples divorce, the Court must consider all of the assets, including the available pension provision. In many cases, other than the home, the biggest asset is a pension, especially if one party has worked in the public sector or has a final salary scheme pension.

Quite often, one party has a greater pension provision than the other, particularly if one partner has spent time out of the workplace looking after the children. The Court has three main options in dealing with pensions upon divorce: 





Offsetting – the pension owner keeps their pension and the other retains another asset i.e. house or savings Attachment orders – the pension remains in the name of the owner but the other “flags” a share of the pension to become payable to them when the pension owner retires Pensions sharing orders – pension is split (not always equally) and some of the pension is transferred from that party’s pension to the other party’s pension – they are then in control of how to invest and manage the pension and when to draw the pension. This is the most usual way to split pensions on divorce.

St Peter’s Church With an hour to spare after a recent meeting in London I went into the National Gallery just off Trafalgar Square. I really like the paintings of the Impressionist artist Paul Cezanne. by Jon Randall (Vicar)

W

hile I was looking at a couple of his paintings a group of art students and their teacher / lecturer came by. The teacher explained that Cezanne used to spend hours in galleries in Paris in the late nineteenth century and he tried to paint in the classical style.

Clearly an exceptionally gifted artist, he tried 8 times to get into the Paris Salon with classical paintings in order to be accepted by the 'incrowd'. 8 times he failed. On the ninth occasion he painted in his own style and was accepted.

All his famous paintings are Impressionist, painted in his unique way.

I wonder how many of us try to do things in the classical style or the 'right way' rather than being ourselves. When Cezanne was himself he produced paintings of amazing beauty. I hope all of us will be encouraged to be ourselves; the unique individuals we were created to be. When we are ourselves I have no doubt that great beauty will be the result.

More than just a dog groomer

By Louise Cox When thinking about buying a new puppy this year, one of the deciding factors was that I am lucky enough to have an office situated in the middle of a beautiful farm and can take my dog to work.

H

owever, as is the case with many jobs, some days it just wouldn’t be practical with large meetings and days out on the road visiting clients.

'Doggy day care' isn’t something I had ever used before, despite owning Rottweilers for twenty years, but I felt with a new, very young puppy that potentially long hours, home alone was just not fair.

So, I popped along to Paw2Paw to have a chat about the day care that Hayley could offer. Before my visit I was assured of Hayley’s love of dogs and also her knowledge and capabilities as a professional dog groomer, so I knew my puppy would be in good hands on the odd day we might need day care.

The facilities are really great, there is a lovely communal play garden for the dogs where they can run around and explore, with sunny and shady spots, all very secure too I might add. Inside

Hayley’s grooming parlour there is a calm chill out area for when they have had too much play and need some quiet time.

This is important with young puppies and especially a bulldog puppy like mine as they can easily overdo it with developing young bones.

Hayley was smitten by George on his first day, he settled in really well, made some new doggy friends and had a fantastic time! Worry over, lovely service and such great care was taken with his dietary and exercise requirements too.

George loves it there so much that he goes for the odd day when we need to go out at weekends, shopping or football matches for example and he is treated like one of the family. I couldn’t recommend Hayley enough and the amazing service she provides, but what really makes Paw2Paw stand out is that extra mile that Hayley goes to and her sheer passion and dedication to the dogs.

Local cases of Parvovirus ... dog owners beware!

We’d like to warn all dog owners about recent cases of parvovirus in the Ramsey area.

T

his deadly disease was almost eradicated in the 1970s with the development of a reliable vaccination but pockets of the illness still appear. We can go months or even a year without seeing a case of parvovirus but unfortunately it’s reared its ugly head in Ramsey recently.

What is parvovirus?

Parvovirus is an extremely contagious and severe disease. It is a hardy virus which can survive in the environment for years. The virus needs rapidly dividing cells of its host to replicate and once entered into the bloodstream seeks out these organs – hardest hit is the usually the walls of the guts.

How is it spread?

The virus is highly contagious and transmitted through ingestion. It is passed out in the faeces and vomit of infected animals which contaminates the environment. Being such a hardy virus it can the transmitted by any person or object that comes into contact with the infected dog such

If a dog recovers from the disease they can still shed the virus into the environment for several weeks.

Who’s at risk?

Any unvaccinated dog can be infected, puppies are the most susceptible. It cannot be passed onto people thankfully.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms include vomiting, profuse diarrhoea (often bloody), depression and abdominal pain. Dogs will quickly become dehydrated due to the loss of fluid in vomiting and diarrhoea.

Prognosis The outlook depends on the level of infection, the treatment provided and the individual’s response to treatment. Untreated, the disease will most likely prove fatal but with sufficient veterinary care a good recovery can be made. The prognosis for an infected puppy is more uncertain, their young bodies struggle to recover and the mortality rate is higher.

Treatment & prevention Unfortunately there is no cure to parvovirus, but supportive Veterinary treatment is crucial to increase the chance of survival. This includes intravenous fluids to rehydrate and antibiotics to prevent other serious complications such as septicaemia (blood poisoning). It is also important to isolate the infected dog to prevent further spread of the disease.

Parvovirus is preventable with vaccination. The recent increased incidences throughout the country suggest immunity level is dropping as not all dogs are receiving regular vaccinations.

If you are in doubt of your dog’s vaccination status please contact your vet.

With this recent local outbreak, we ask you to be cautious. Please don’t take your new puppy for a walk or socialise with unvaccinated dogs until at least one week after second part of their vaccination course. Please also keep your dog’s vaccinations up-to-date, it could save your dog’s life as well as help to prevent further outbreaks.

FOOD v Ingredients: 4 lamb shanks Salt & pepper 50ml of olive oil 2 medium onions, finely chopped 1 small head of garlic, halved 2 tbsp tomato puree 1 sprig of rosemary 1 sprig of thyme 1 big handful of fava beans 2 big handfuls of black olives 250ml of dry white wine 250ml chicken stock Chopped parsley v Method:

1. Heat the oven to 160c/325F/gas mark 3. Season the shanks well. Heat the oil in an oven and hob proof casserole dish over a medium heat. Brown the shanks for about 15 minutes on all sides. Remove and put to one side until needed.

Braised Lamb Shank with Fava Beans & Olive Gravy served with mash & local root vegetables

With the cold winter evenings it is comforting to sit down to something substantial and lamb shanks is one of my favourite served with buttered mash and roasted root vegetables.

2. Add the chopped onions and garlic to the fat in the dish the lamb shanks were browned in and slowly cook for about 5 minutes, until the onions start to soften. Stir in the tomato puree and herbs and heat for a couple of minutes more, then add the fava beans and olives, followed by the wine and stock and the lamb shanks and bring to a simmer.

Once all the ingredients are simmering, cover and place in a preheated oven for 2-2 ½ hours, until the meat wants to fall off the bones.

3. Before serving check the seasoning and serve straight away, scattering the top with parsley and of course with all stew style of dishes mash and winter root vegetables are the finishing touches.

The Cuckoos continue to improve facilities Yaxley FC have installed new seats in the stand at In2itive Park as work continues on the ground.

T

he new seats were in place for Saturday's 8-3 home win against Wellingborough. A match so packed with incident, that club President Jeff Lenton Tweeted that the new seats weren't used, such was the amount of time both sets of fans were on their feet celebrating goals!

The Cuckoos fans have seen a new club house, widened access road, 3g pitch and now seats installed since the club was promoted to the United Counties League Premier Division.

Football Shorts… Manager Ian Benjamin won the August Manager of the Month in the United Counties League Premier division. The Cuckoos are finally out of the FA Cup despite two

valiant efforts against East Thurrock, a side from two leagues higher. 11 goals were scored at a recent Saturday fixture at home to Wellingborough, with the Cuckoos winning out 8-3 in the end. The visitors also missed a penalty!

Charitable cyclists raised hundreds of pounds for a worthy cause as part of their end of year celebrations.

axley Riders held their annual Presentation Evening on Saturday 10 October, at In2itive Park, in Leading Drove, Yaxley. This year’s awards saw Wayne Langley take home Rider of the Year, with Alan Strickland chosen as Best Newcomer and Daffy Dave as Most Hammered Rider. Most Improved Rider went to Kerry Starr, while The Sunday Spinner was voted Ride of the Year. Special mentions were also given to Gary Gwynn and Andy Bell.

While the evening was designed to celebrate another excellent year of the growing group, it also provided an opportunity to support the group’s nominated charity, WhizzKidz, which provides disabled children the with essential wheelchairs and other mobility

equipment that they need to lead fun and active childhoods.

Helen Harris, who helped organise the night and who rode Ride London this year for Whizz Kidz, said: “I am exceptionally proud of the support we received from local and national businesses and our members who donated nearly £2,000 worth of prizes and delighted to have raised over £500 for Whizz-Kidz.I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came along on the night; your contribution to this fantastic charity is much appreciated and I hope you all enjoyed the evening as much as I did.”

Grab yourself a bargain

BLOG Last month I encouraged you all to go jogging around Yaxley and its nice friendly 5km route. Clearly though, I wasn’t specific enough on the rules.

T

here I was, sitting in my car at a roundabout waiting to pull out, slowly moving forward to go as the traffic cleared. At the exact same millisecond that I went to put my foot down and go, a woman dressed in fluorescent orange lycra ran out across the road inches in front of my car. I jumped on the brakes, as did the car intending to turn right as she ran on oblivious and disappeared down the road. I then had to spend the next ten minutes explaining to two highly curious children in the back seat that daddy had not in fact used several naughty words, they’d actually imagined the whole thing and that under no circumstances should they discuss it with mummy.

Now there are several things to learn from this – number one obviously is for drivers to appreciate that joggers can have considerably less intelligence than you might credit them with. Whilst you might not look at someone wearing a day-glo downhill ski suit plodding wearily down the street and think ‘yes that person looks like they have book smarts I must ask them for mortgage advice’, you might be tempted to assume that they know the difference between choosing life and leaping care-free under a bus to an almost certain death. You might think that, but you may well be wrong.

The second thing to learn from this however is arguably the most important; as a jogger, for goodness sake remember that the same rules of common sense you follow as a pedestrian also apply to you when you are jogging.

Don’t run out in the road in front of approaching cars. If you see an open drain cover, don’t run over it. Dog poo? Don’t tread in it. If you see someone walking towards you, don’t just run straight at them, move to one side. I can assure you that basic common sense will keep you alive a lot longer than a pair of expensive trainers and a FitBit ever will.
