Welcome to the May issue of the Yaxley Gazette. With infection rates falling and the vaccination programme continuing at pace, we are starting to see the first signs of life returning and it is certainly an exciting time. How many of us have welcomed that, yet held back a little anticipation, because uncertainty has become the only certainty. From April 12, as we moved a step closer to freedom, nonessential shops, hairdressers and salons flung open their doors, and pubs and restaurants were permitted to serve customers outside. But while these are all steps in the right direction, with Covid-19 restrictions being eased over four steps spread across at least four months – there are still many decisions which still need to be made, and some unknowns remain. For many of us, the gradual easing of lockdown brings longedfor opportunities (even if at a social distance) – to see friends, play sports, resume contact with family in ‘real space’ or get back to work that we value. But for some of us, much anticipated changes and readjustment can be difficult. The prospect of coming out of lockdown when debate is still live about the science supporting it can be a real worry. This may especially apply to those more vulnerable to the virus and those of us with mental health concerns. Mental Health Awareness Week will take place from 10-16 May 2021. Whatever awaits you in May – and the rest of the year – be kind to yourself, do the things that make you happy, and believe that things will get better. Stay safe and well. Until next time,

yaxleyhub Police Update Over the last month we’ve seen a slight increase in calls for service in Yaxley. As a result we’ve been carrying out days of action, carrying out patrols in the area and stop searching people. We’re seeing incidents of drug dealing and have seized drugs on occasions. Drug dealing is a priority for us as it often leads on to assaults, anti-social behaviour and thefts so if you see anything please report it. Your reports help us to build up a picture of what is happening.

HOLME WI

We’ve also been patrolling anti-social behaviour hot spots that have been reported to us, namely the green areas and The Broadway shopping centre. We’re pleased to say that as a result of your information and our patrols, issues have declined over the past month. As people return to work and schools and with lock down rules changing we are looking to carry out speed checks over this next month, I will update you on the results next month – please remember that speed limits are not a target. I will aim to keep you updated on our work, so please talk to us if you see us and keep reporting problems so we know where to focus our efforts. Stay safe with the new measures in place and enjoy your new freedom. We have various way to update you on what is happening in the local areas, join us onFacebook-square@HuntsCops. Pauline Brown A big thank you to our president and committee for the Easter egg and flowers. What a lovely surprise! Still no news on when we will be able to restart our meetings but keep watching this space. Keep well everyone and enjoy the sunny (even if chilly) days, it is so much easier to keep cheerful when the sun shines!

Alison McGuinness, President The vaccination programme is well underway and now all our members appear to have had at least their first vaccine. As the situation starts to ease slightly as we move out of lockdown, we are hopeful of at least meeting outside this summer. We recently dropped our Easter bags to all our members, which included a chocolate bunny and a bunch of daffodils, keeping our members in touch and reminding them we are in this together. Members are still keeping busy knitting and the weekly Zoom Coffee Mornings are still going ahead as well. Now we wait for the end of May when larger groups are allowed to meet up and we can hold a meeting outdoors. yaxleyhub Over the past 5 years a fundraising group has been organising an event for Magpas Air Ambulance, East Anglia Air Ambulance, The Great North Air Ambulance and many more at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough. We have, therefore, been able to give over £25,000 to the air ambulances.

Supporting Air Ambulance Our group not only organise the family fun day that has all the entertainment, stalls and catering available for the families, we also have different bands playing a wide variety of music that will suit everyone. We also have the 5k, 8k or 12k marshall track where supporters can either bike, run or walk for their chosen air ambulance. BRoW4 CIC is a Community Interest Company. The aim of the company is to encourage the local area meeting together with people that they have not met before. This will allow them to develop their skills in talking to new people, resilience, perseverance, and organisational skills that could help with the setup of these events. Also, it will help the local businesses as they

We also want to bring the community together, to make new friends, to encourage those that can Bike Run or Walk for their chosen air ambulance and to meet and socialise, and hopefully make new friends, with likeminded people. Without people like me, who organise events like this, air ambulances all over the UK would struggle as they receive no Government funding or National Lottery funding. They survive on the generous donations that the public give them. We also need the help of small up and coming companies who would like to sponsor this event. Without the

So that we are able to continue with this event we need supporters of different air ambulances to come and join us on 10 July at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough and bike, run or walk for your air ambulance. will have the option to sponsor activities at these events, which will enable them to get advertising through social media and much more. Also, the charities that we are supporting will get coverage to help them continue with their good work.

generous support that the sponsors have given over the past few years this event would not be possible. I would hate to see this event getting cancelled and the air ambulances suffering due to the lack of support.

ST PETER'S CHURCH From our Bishop: I express with you my sadness at the death of Prince Philip. We give thanks to God for his life and service. Our hearts and our prayers reach out in sympathy for Her Majesty the Queen in her profound loss after 73 years of loving marriage and shared duty. We pray also for Prince Philip’s children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We thank God for the Prince’s deep sense of duty in his support of the Queen and the service of his country. We remember his keen intelligence and wit, his promotion of the initiative and growth of young people through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, his promotion of new technology and scientific research and his patronage of hundreds of good causes. We also remember his fine record as a serving naval officer and his sporting gifts and passions. We are thankful for his Christian faith and his commitment to clergy support and development through St George’s House at Windsor. Most of all, we praise God for the example of a person dedicated to his family and its wellbeing over more than seventy years with the joys and the sacrifices which come with such a commitment.

For 75 years Christian Aid has been at the forefront of providing material support to and solidarity with many of the world’s most deprived people. Deprived, that is, of food; of clean, safe water; of adequate homes; of peace and security; of livelihoods. And all too often deprived of a sense of dignity and hope for their future. Covid has inevitably added to the struggles that are faced, as so much of the medical provision available to us is simply beyond reach. The charity’s work is very largely dependent on people’s voluntary efforts and generosity, especially in the annual Christian Aid Week in May. During the pandemic the charity has suffered a substantial loss of income, as so much of its usual means of fundraising has not been possible. So, will you help to ensure that its crucial efforts to bring practical relief and renewed hope to suffering people will not be seriously compromised? During this Christian Aid Week, May 10-16, St Peter’s Church will be inviting you to contribute to this life changing work either by: 1) Donating via gift envelopes that will be delivered in Yaxley, and depositing them at any of the village collecting points that will be detailed 2) Contributing via the Christian Aid website : www.christianaid.org.uk

We thank God that Prince Philip now enjoys the fullness of the resurrection life. We pray for Her Majesty that she will know all the consolations of her own deep faith in this time of mourning. God save the Queen!

If you can Gift Aid your donation the value of your gift will be increased by 25%.

Yours ever in Christ, Stephen Bishop of Ely

If you would like to know more about Christian Aid’s work, or would be willing to help distribute gift envelopes in the village in the coming days, it will be very good to hear from you. Thank you.

Hope According to Wikipedia, Hope is an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes with respect to events and circumstances in one’s life or the World at large. In the beautiful hymn “Great is thy Faithfulness” the phrase “Strength for today and great Hope for tomorrow” is, I believe, very relevant to our current circumstances. It is our strength today and our hopes for tomorrow that have seen us through the lock downs.. And now positive outcomes are appearing like the flowers that are opening up around us. Easter was early this year and we held some beautiful Services over the Internet. We were reminded about new Life and Hope, and with the birdsong and blossom, the vaccination roll out and the easing of lock downs, we are seeing positive outcomes.

Welcome We are delighted to be able to share with you our good news. We welcomed our new Minister, Reverend Vivienne Smith MD, during April. We had to meet and greet over the Internet because of Covid restrictions but we know from those meetings that she will bring something special to us and the Community. We will continue our online Services on our Peterborough Methodist Circuit Facebook and YouTube site every Sunday from 10.30am, and prayers on weekday mornings at 8.30am. We would love you to join us then or catch up later. And we hope that we will be able to welcome you back into our Chapel very soon. Take care and keep safe until we can meet again. moneymatters TAX TIPS

How to pay less

Google rated Agent

This is the first in a series of many tax tips from Bird & Co that will be spread over a period that may help you with a few of the many ways to save on tax, including checking your tax code, making the most of tax-free allowances and dozens of other ways to reduce your tax bill. by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

Tax Tip 1 Check your PAYE tax code - your tax code indicates how much tax HMRC will collect from your salary. You can find it on your payslip. Check your tax code each year, or after changing jobs, to make sure it's correct for your situation. You can find further details or amend the code by logging into your Personal Tax Account (PTA) If your employer is using the wrong code, you may get it amended as well as be entitled to pay less tax in coming months, or receive a refund for previous years.

Tax Tip 2 Claim tax credits - tax credits provide extra money to those looking after children, disabled workers and other workers on low incomes. The two main types you can claim: working tax credits and child tax credits. Keep in mind that you can't claim tax credits if you already receive Universal Credit.

Tax Tip 3 Pay into a pension scheme contributions to your employer's pension scheme (including any additional voluntary contributions you make) can be made from your gross pay, before any tax is charged. The government will top up your pension with tax relief, giving you a free bonus for saving for retirement.

Tax Tip 4 Benefit from marriage allowance marriage allowance is a tax perk that benefits couples where one partner earns less than the personal allowance. If you're married or in a civil partnership, you can transfer any unused personal allowance from the lower-earning partner to the higher earner. Up to £1,250 can be transferred in 2020-21, potentially saving you up to £250. To qualify, the higher earner must be a 20% taxpayer.

Meet the tax return deadline - if you're one of the 12m people who need to submit a self-assessment tax return, make sure you don't miss the deadline. It's a costly and easily-avoided mistake. For online submissions, you have until 31 January 2022 to send in your 2020/2021 return. But if you want to file on paper, you'll need to submit by 31 October 2021. Miss the deadline and there's an automatic £100 fine - even if you don't owe any tax.

Tax Tip 6 Reclaim overpaid taxes - if you are a non-taxpayer, or your income unexpected falls during a year, you may find that you've been taxed more than you should have done, as HMRC assumes your personal allowance is equally used each month. To reclaim, fill out form R40 from HMRC, or call them

Mental Health Awareness Week 10 – 16 May During Mental Health Awareness Week 2021, we will pull together the evidence that demonstrates the powerful benefits of nature for our mental health. We will look at nature’s unique ability to not only bring consolation in times of stress, but also increase our creativity, empathy and a sense of wonder. It turns out that it is not just being in nature but how we open ourselves up and interact with nature that counts. We will show that even small contacts with nature can reduce feelings of social isolation and be effective in protecting our mental health, and preventing distress. Visit www.mentalhealth.org.uk/campaigns/mental-health-awarenessweek/why-nature to find out more.

Farmer Tom & Lisa

g n i m o Welc gnificent ma May

Every year I tell you, dear reader, that my grandfather would never leave the farm in May; a month so beautiful and lush and green, and full of hope and life. I agree with him and yet every year I’m still surprised; wowed by the wonder of a month that always delivers. The fragrance of May is wisteria, sweet pea, lily of the valley, lilac, freesia, gardenia, and of course rose. April this year was really dry, but let’s hope that late April rains materialised and that April showers bring May flowers. I say that May always delivers; in 2020, the measly 1.6mm didn’t help too much, but the heavens were to open in June (and July, August etc…). Let’s hope this year is different. Times of drought stress are not only a challenge on the farm, but for our wildlife too who are trying to build nests, birth young, gather food, and produce flowers and seeds. I hope we don’t have another year of challenges for them and us alike.

skywards and the spring-born lambs are gaining weight and looking more like their mothers each day. In the allotment everything is growing (especially the weeds), and we’ll hope to have seen our last frost of the year back in April. Beware though, in 2020 - a year with only 6 frosty days - three firsts were in May which causes problems for sugar beet growers and allotmenteers as you frost-sensitive seedlings can be killed by a nip at the wrong time.

May is peak spring, and it just feels such an exciting time of year; a time when you just can’t stop life from growing. In the fields the crops are shooting

The mention of weeds has me thinking of our greatest adversary on the farm - blackgrass. This pernicious weed seem relentless, springing up seemingly despite

our best efforts. In recent years we’ve tried dozens of ways of beating it including delayed sowing, changing rotations, zero-tillage (where we don’t plough the ground at all), grazing, hand roguing (picking the weeds), varying fertiliser applications, satellite image analysis, and much more. Yet May is the month when the weed we sometimes think we’ve beaten grows up above the wheat crops and to tease us all the way up to harvest (by which time it’s already shed its seeds for next year!). But May is also the month when we welcome asparagus, new potatoes, spring onions, peas, rhubarb, spinach, and much more to the table after the winter months; delicious. I hope you have a magnificent May, stay safe, and thank you for supporting British farmers and food producers!

Three more great larvae Following on from the three good larvae of last month here are three more great insect larvae for gardeners. This time all three are beetle larvae. The super aphid muncher the ladybird their larvae which are often mistaken for pests in their grey spikey armour consume closer to 5,000 aphids during the development process and often more than 100 in any day. Fennel and the rather less commonly grown tansy are great attractants for ladybirds who lay their eggs amongst aphids and then the feasting begins.

The final two great larvae are the rove beetle and ground beetle larvae. The adults of both these beetle groups are great controllers of slugs and other pests but their larvae too are beneficial in the garden. Ground beetle larvae are round and maggot like in appearance often with brown or orange heads. Close inspection will reveal six small legs and impressive jaws. These larvae are generally found

under ground and are often confused with chafer grubs and other soil pests when in fact they are preying on wireworms and smaller slugs helping to protect out plants. The rove beetle larvae are similar in appearance but flatter more like a centipede, they will eat virtually any soil dwelling

organisms they encounter from slug to leatherjacket. Remember all these beneficial insects and their larvae are as likely to be harmed by chemicals used to control pests so make space and safe areas in your garden for these wonderful gardening friends.

30 Days Wild 2021! 30 Days Wild is The Wildlife Trusts' annual nature challenge asks the nation to do one 'wild' thing every day throughout June. Daily Random Acts of Wildness can be anything you like ...litter-picking, birdwatching, planting seeds, puddle-splashing, you name it! Taking part in 30 Days Wild is scientifically proven to make you feel happier, healthier, and more connected to nature. In 2020, more than half a million people got involved - a record 650,000 people - from families and couples, to teachers, care homes and workplaces, everyone's invited! The Trust is asking everyone to kick-start their own challenge with a Big Wild Breakfast outdoors on Tuesday 1 June - see how much wildlife you can spot in just 30 minutes in a breakfast bio-blitz! Start your day the wild way with butterflies, bagels, worms, waffles, toads and toast. In 2020, a five-year review of 30 Days Wild participants, run in conjunction with the University of Derby, found that people reported they felt happier and healthier from taking part, with positive effects lasting for up to two months afterwards. Leanne Manchester, The Wildlife Trusts’ digital manager, says: “One million people have enjoyed 30 Days Wild from The Wildlife Trusts so far and it’s still growing! We’re thrilled that our annual nature challenge has become so massively popular and our

research with the University of Derby shows how keeping it wild for the whole month of June will make you feel happier and healthier. What could be better than making time for yourself and connecting with nature for just a few moments of your day? It’s fun, free and easy – and after such a challenging year, we’ve never needed nature more!” Mya-Rose Craig, ornithologist and campaigner known as Birdgirl, says: “I’m a big fan of 30 Days Wild– I love being part of the surge of enthusiasm that emanates from everyone involved. Get creative and find 30 new ways to be inspired by the beauty of the outdoors or be entertained trying out new nature activities. It is especially important if you live in the city as nature is just waiting to be found. I really want to try sketching a bird this year and can’t wait to kick-off wild June with the Big Wild Breakfast. I plan to take out my bowl of cereal plus my binoculars and enjoy a bit of garden birding while I munch.” Craig Bennett, chief executive of The Wildlife Trusts, says: “We’ll be getting outdoors for a Big Wild Breakfast in the garden on 1 June, to kickstart

our family’s own 30 Days Wild. If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that people need more nature in their lives and much more of it on their own doorstep. We know there’s a huge public appetite for more contact with nature. We want to see neighbourhood nature everywhere for people to enjoy – from wilder community spaces and urban meadows alive with wildflowers and native grasses to healthier hedgerows, hedgehog superhighways and glorious nature-friendly gardens.” Sign up to take part and get a FREE postal or digital pack of goodies to help inspire your wild month - including an activity passport and wallchart to track progress. What are you waiting for - boost your health, happiness and sense of connection to nature. Sign up here www.wildlifebcn.org/30DaysWild and check out #30DaysWild on social media.

Purple sprouting broccoli By Rachael Leverton

Purple Sprouting Broccoli is a beautiful, tasty addition to the dinner table, and the garden. It has a great flavour, a long harvesting season and is nutritionally beneficial. A single portion provides half your daily requirement of carotenoids, plus high levels of folic acid and vitamins A and C. It's definitely a 'plan-ahead' crop though. If you start planting now you will give yourself something to look forward to next January, and as it is a 'cut and come again' crop, that long season should keep you going until April or May! Purple-sprouting broccoli is extremely hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -12°C. You can actually start raising seeds in March, for even earlier crops. I usually start the new year with good intentions of staggering my planting like this (because it is one of my favourites veg), then forget and end up planting in April or May. One of the reasons I love it is that I garden on fairly alkaline soil, in which it thrives. It prefers a heavier soil than mine ideally but seems to do well enough in my garden. I dig in a fair amount of leaf mould and well-rotted manure to bulk it up. Purple sprouting broccoli doesn't like exposed sites, because the wind buffets the stems, so if your garden is more open it will need a bit of protection. Sow seeds into small pots or multicell trays, using a good quality multi-purpose seed and cuttings compost. When the little plants are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out and transplant them into single 9cm pots. Watering them in well.

WE CLEAN YOUR OVEN SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO! Ovens, hobs, extractors & AGAs CALL TODAY Sarah Meredith T: 01733 568221 or 07710 735094 www.ovenwizards.com

Once the plants have matured, fork the soil over. Remove large stones and perennial weeds. Even if your soil is heavier it's worth digging in some organic matter to improve texture and moisture retention. I don't need to add lime to my soil but if you garden on neutral or acid soil, you'd be advised to work some in. Transplant when the broccoli plants are 7-9cm tall. Water them well before removing from their pots, and plant them 50-60cm apart, with a similar distance between the rows. Brassicas dislike loose soil, so make sure you firm around the plants lightly with your foot. Water again after planting. Six plants will produce enough broccoli to feed a family of four. I grow more because I love it. Harvest when the flower shoots are well developed but before the flowers have actually opened. Cut the central spears with a sharp knife first, as this encourages the side shoots to develop quickly. Then crop the side shoots regularly to extend the cropping time. January seems a long way away right now, but a little planning and preparation will ensure that deliciousness will await when we get there. Happy Gardening.

The Players By Darren O'Sullivaan

A stranger has you cornered. They call themselves The Host. You are forced to play their game. In it one person can live and the other must die. You are the next player. You have a choice to make. This is a game where nobody wins. A gripping, must-read thriller for fans of Adrian McKinty’s The Chain and Graham Moore’s The Holdout and readers of Steve Cavanagh and John Marrs. About the Author I have lived in our lovely little city for most of my life, and following my own experience in a Chinese take away in Fletton, one that inspired the concept of The Players, i knew i had to keep this story close to home. Peterborough truly is the most perfect backdrop for this dark and twisty tale.I also love that this novel is gaining interest overseas, and next week it is published In Canada, (a few weeks before here in the UK, thanks to Covid) where we have national coverage and will be in every city in the country. Every single reader there gets to be a little bit Peterborian.

Published by HQ 13 May 2021 | PBO £8.99 Also available in eBook and Audio Darren O’Sullivan is the author of psychological thrillers, Our Little Secret, Close Your Eyes, Closer Than You Think and Dark Corners. Darren is a number one bestselling author with over 100k EBooks sold across his first three books. He is a graduate of the Faber Academy and his debut novel, Our Little Secret, was a bestseller in four countries. The Players was inspired by the author’s neardeath experience in Peterborough, where the book is set - in fact, one of the scenes takes place in the very Chinese takeaway where the incident occurred.

Praise for Darren O’Sullivan: "Saw meets I See You in this dark, twisted and deadly game of kill or be killed. I held my breath from beginning to end" C.L. Taylor "A compelling, dark brooding thriller that packs a punch" John Marrs "An outstandingly taut story which grabbed me and then spat me out breathless at the end" Angela Marson "An intense novel full of secrets, lies and suspense that I thoroughly enjoyed unravelling" Mel Sherratt

The children at William de Yaxley CE Academy have been completing Bishop Steven’s Lent challenge, in the five weeks which led up to their Easter holiday. The Lent challenge was all about having hope and looking to the future – a future for us all in God’s world. The activities and challenges had three sections each week: Let’s find out, Let the Bible inspire us William de Yaxley Over the five weeks the children explored the following ideas: The children participated in a weekly Collective Worship (Assembly) where the theme was introduced and discussed as a whole school. What are the hopes of the children in our school? In their classes they participated in a variety of activities to explore these themes further. The children created and took pictures of rainbows, and reflected on how school changed, the use of class bubbles, staggered break times and mixing and meeting with their friends. Hope can make a difference The children investigated poetry which contained words of hope. They wrote their own poems and created

“Word Clods” using all of the words that they thought would bring joy and hope to everyone. Hope in our community The children explored different local organisations that provided hope for others, for example: Yaxley Food Bank and the Young People’s Counselling Service Hope across the world In their classes, the children had opportunities to discover and talk about how COVID-19 had affected other parts of the world. They were able to discuss the vaccine and the impact of this for our country and the how for others, this was a challenge. They investigated organisations such as: Christian Aid and “Tearfund” – who provide support for countries who are struggling in the pandemic Hope invites us to plan for the future During the final week of the challenge, we reflected together and discussed our hopes for a positive summer, filled with family, friends and “Hope for a future” The children have thoroughly enjoyed their time and valued the opportunity to talk about their concerns, but also acknowledge and celebrate all of the positives in their lives and world around them.

20 20

1 butternut squash, cut in half, then sliced into 1cm rounds 2-3 tbsp olive oil Salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 tbsp Greek yogurt 1 tbsp pomegranate molasses A small bunch mint, chopped 1 tsp Aleppo pepper flakes

Looking to host a spring barbecue? Forget the fail-safe burgers and sausages and put a fresh spin on it with this Middle-Eastern inspired recipe. Butterflied spiced lamb leg with Persian jewelled rice and grilled squash with yogurt, mint and Aleppo pepper. This delicious lunch is full of exciting flavours, the perfect mix of complementary herbs, vegetables, meat, fruit and spices. Method B Begin by butterflying the lamb leg. Lay it fleshy side down on a chopping board and starting at the thick end of the leg, use a really sharp knife to cut through the meat down to the bone. Continue to make small slicing incisions through the meat, following the line of the bone as closely as possible to ease it away. Discard the bone. Where the meat is thickest, make a few deep slashes to open the leg out further and make it more even. Set aside while you make the marinade. C Set a frying pan over a medium heat and add the cumin and coriander, toasting for a minute or so until deliciously fragrant. Tip into a pestle and mortar and roughly grind. Add the sumac and smoked paprika and grind together. Stir through the garlic, olive oil and sherry vinegar, and then rub all over the lamb, working it into all of the meat. Cover and leave to marinate for a couple of hours at room temperature, or ideally overnight in the fridge for maximum flavour. D Once the meat is ready, add the rice to a sieve and rinse well under running water, then tip into a bowl and cover with cold water. Put the cranberries in a separate bowl and cover with boiling water. Add the saffron to a small glass and cover with 2 tablespoons of boiling water. Allow to soak for 1 hour.

What to do: at the barbecue B Fire up the barbecue; one end high for the lamb, the middle burner to medium for the squash, and the other end to a low flame for the rice. C Once the rice, saffron and cranberries have soaked for 30 minutes, add the oil and half of the butter to a large deep frying pan and place on the cooking grates over the low flame. When the butter has melted, add the onion, cinnamon, cumin, cardamon and chilli flakes and fry gently for 30 minutes until the onion is soft and lightly caramelised, stirring from time to time.

D When the onions are nearly done, start to grill the lamb. Lay the lamb leg over the high heat for 8 minutes on each side to caramelise, and then reduce heat to a minimum and cook for a further 15 minutes until the internal temp is 60-65°C for medium-rare, 6570°C for medium. Turn off the burner under the lamb and transfer to rest for a good 10-15 minutes on the warming rack. E Drain the rice and cranberries, and stir through the caramelised onions. Add the saffron and its infused water. Cover with boiling water to come level with the top of the rice. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, stirring well, then dot the surface of the rice with the remaining butter. Cover the pan tightly with a lid or layer of foil and leave over a low heat. Cook for about 30 minutes, after which time the rice will be fluffy and a delicious buttery crust will have developed on the bottom. F Once the rice has been covered, cook the squash. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and pepper. Lie on the grates over a medium flame and cook for about 20 minutes, turning regularly until lightly charred and soft when pierced with the tip of a knife. G Make the topping for the rice by stirring the walnuts, parsley, garlic, pomegranate and orange zest in a small bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Once the rice is ready, stir through half the walnut, pomegranate and parsley mixture, scraping the lovely buttery crust off the bottom of the pan and stirring that through as well. Pile the rice onto a warmed serving dish and scatter over the remaining walnut mixture. H To serve, cut the lamb into thick slices and pile onto a serving plate. Sprinkle over the mint and a little sea salt. Pile the roasted squash onto another plate and add little dollops of yogurt. Drizzle over the pomegranate molasses and sprinkle on the mint and Aleppo pepper. Tuck in!

PUZZLE PAGE FOR ADULTS & KIDS

CROSSWORD

timeout By Tracey Anderson

Why we love an online quiz My friend Sally looked up from her phone and chuckled. ‘Look…this is me as a dog!’ She proffered her phone. The pic was of a Chihuahua, wearing Ray-Bans, lying on a sunbed next to a cocktail…actually pretty representative of Sal, with her diminutive stature and love of beach holidays. Why do we find these online quizzes irresistible? Why do we have the urge to know what we will look like as an old lady, a man, or a biscuit? Most of us are more than a little self-obsessed. We like to talk about ourselves and we like to learn about ourselves. 40% of the words we utter in life are about us! Researchers in psychology at Harvard University ran a series of studies comparing how people felt when talking about themselves, compared to how they felt when talking about other people. The researchers found that, no matter how the studies were set up the results indicated that the reward centres in human brains were stimulated most during self-disclosure. We actually get a brain buzz from talking about ourselves! Online quizzes and surveys tend to ask questions such as, ‘What is your favourite colour from this selection?’ or ‘Would your ideal Saturday evening be spent a) dancing

in a nightclub? b) camping in the Cairngorms? c) curled up with a good book in front of a fire?’ etc. The quiz allows self-expression based on personal preferences. We disclose something about ourselves which releases the shot of dopamine which makes us feel good. But we also like to learn about ourselves. Have you or any of your friends every taken part in an online quiz or survey which starts off by declaring, ‘Every woman has her own Eighties anthem. Which is yours?’ or ‘Which celebrity would play you in the movie of your life?’. You click the link, answer a couple of questions and the song title or photo of the celeb pops up, along with, ‘Tracey is a hardworking woman. She’s been through some tough times but always keeps smiling. She is fiercely loyal and will stand by her friends through thick and thin. If you hurt her, she may not show her feelings outwardly

but rest assured, she’ll never forgive you.’We could all probably be described like that, and even though we know it’s hokum, like horoscopes, we lap it up precisely because these online quiz results are relentlessly positive, and while we love learning things about ourselves, we love learning good things about ourselves even more. We share it with friends because it validates the positive things we feel about who we are. Learning about ourselves is a national pastime. The self-help industry is a £7.5 billion per year business worldwide. Its entire premise is that understanding yourself is the key to a happier, more fulfilled life. People pay serious money to go on retreats, courses or to see a therapist to learn about themselves, which probably explains why a free quiz claiming to reveal our personality type based on which Avengers character we prefer is so alluring.

Top tips

FOR DRESSING BETTER

We all have bits we would love to change and bits that we think are nice about our figures. The key to dressing well is creating good vertical balance with your figure and drawing the eyes away from parts that are out of proportion.

Here are a few of my trade secrets that apply to most women’s body shapes;  Wear your waistbands on your waist! It sounds obvious but so many women wear their waistbands far too low, which is unflattering for your tummy and can distort the vertical balance of your figure.  Belt it! The belt is such a under utilised hero of the wardrobe! It does not have to be fancy but good quality is key. Belting your trousers or creating more shape by putting a belt over jumpers or coats will enhance your figure and give it that feminine hourglass shape that we strive for.  Tuck tops in. To show off a defined waist or give the illusion of a smaller waist tuck tops in! If you are conscious of your stomach research ‘the French tuck’ a way to create some definition with tops that will cover your tummy, but this trick will give your waist shape.

 The rule of one. Generally for women who want to flatter something they like about their figure and disguise something they don’t so much, follow this simple rule. Go for top half oversized and bottom half slim fitting OR the other way round.  Darts and pleats. Look for woven garments (in non-stretch fabrics) where they have been constructed with seaming detail. Darts from the side seams over the bust will give you shape here – this is needed for small and large busts. Seams over the bottom on a pair of trousers or skirts will give you shape over your bottom (rather than flatten it!) and will help again with waist definition. I hope next time you go through your wardrobe or go clothes shopping some of these little tips stick with you and help you select clothes that will enhance YOU. Wearing the right clothes will make you look slimmer, more balanced and more than anything make you feel great!

Born to R u n Tips for all runners

Did you start Couch to 5K during lockdown? Did you fall in love with running? Or do you need motivating? Here are our top tips as runners.

Vivacity gears up to Keep Peterborough

Walk – You heard us. Walk to warm up, loosen your muscles, and prime your joints for the activity of running. If you walk the first five to 10 minutes of your workout, especially if it’s early in the morning, of you’ve been sitting at a desk for hours, it’s easier on your body and you’ll find your rhythm more quickly. Go slower – Not walking this time. We mean find your sustainable pace. This is the pace you can run at easily and most

Find your time of day – We all have a natural body clock. Try running at different times until you find the perfect workout hour for you. Eat wholesome carbs beforehand – The meal you eat before your run should be the most carb rich one of the day (think fruit, veg and wholegrains rather than chocolate cake!), so your body has plenty of ready-to-burn fuel. Obviously don’t eat JUST before you run…but you knew that, right?

Active

After the successful reopening of the Lido last week, with an average of 350 swim sessions booked each day, the team at Vivacity are looking forward to being able to open the doors to their gyms and leisure venues on Monday 12 April as gyms, indoor swimming pools and leisure venues are permitted to reopen for the first time this year. After the last lockdown, the team introduced a successful online booking system to ensure members and customers could safely carry on enjoying their gym workouts, classes and swim sessions. Thorough risk assessments led to increased cleaning (including anti-viral fogging) spacing of equipment ensured social distancing and monitoring capacity allowed much valued regular indoor exercise to resume safely. Following customer feedback there have been a few extra changes to meet customer needs this time around. For example, longer swim sessions have been introduced, lockers, showers and changing facilities are now open and whilst indoor fitness classes are still not permitted under the government rules, an exciting programme of outdoor fitness classes has been introduced to provide

opportunities for guided group exercise. The classes range from Bootcamp style workouts, classes targeting specific muscle groups, high intensity cardio efforts and even aqua fitness at the Lido. Operations Director, Jon Marsden told us; “we are really looking forward to reopening, the whole staff team are passionate about what we do and miss our members and customers as much as they miss the gym. We all know of the physical and mental benefits of regular exercise and how important the routine of being able to go to the pool or gym is. It isn’t just about the exercise but seeing familiar faces, having fun and challenging yourself with others, accessing specialist equipment, advice or personal training or just being in a different environment to work out – all of these things are so important”.

Vivacity members have access to a host of different leisure facilities and services across the city including gyms, swimming pools, specialist health and wellbeing advice, courts, Nordic walking, outdoor fitness classes and even free or discounted swimming at the Lido, to find out more visit https://vivacity.org/

of your runs should be at this level of effort. Once or twice a week you can do the speedwork and tempo runs, which train your body to get faster. Running this way reduces your risk of injury and burnout. The sustainable pace should be slow enough to maintain a conversation without huffing and puffing, but not so slow you can sing your favourite song!

Make it recreational – Choose a great playlist, or your favourite audio book or podcast. Or run with a friend to catch up on all the gossip or put the world to rights. This is your time, and it should be enjoyable, so you’ll look forward to it and want to keep doing it.

pawsforthought Why guinea pigs make perfect pets

Furry Friends When I was twelve I begged my dad for a pet. He vetoed a dog or a cat but one night he arrived home with a large cage which housed two chubby balls of cuteness. It was my introduction to guinea pigs. I christened them Siouxsie Sioux and Roxy (which gives away my teenage musical tastes). They became my characterful and vocal companions for the next six or so years.. Guinea pigs, or ‘cavies’, are short-tailed, rough-haired South American rodents. They are longer-lived and friendlier than hamsters, and more socially acceptable than rats (disclaimer…I love rats, but many people don’t). Guinea pigs are pretty hardy and healthy if fed properly. They can be prone to dental issues and bladder stones, but proper nutrition and regular medical check-ups help prevent this. They originate from cool climates and don't do well in hot, humid, or freezing conditions, so avoid positioning the cage next to a radiator or keeping them outside unless you have a very sheltered warm shed. The warnings in the previous paragraph notwithstanding guinea pigs are actually easy to care for. They require hay, fresh water, fresh vegetables, a small quantity of specialist guinea pig pellets, and a vitamin C supplement each day. Their cage should be as large as possible and lined with paper-based bedding. It needs to be spot cleaned daily and thoroughly cleaned weekly. They are very sociable and highly fertile so don't keep a male and female together unless you want baby guinea pigs! They are great pets for younger children under parental

supervision. They can be short or longhaired and come in a variety of colours. The long-haired ones are very pretty but do require frequent grooming. The fact that they can live up to 7-8 years (average around 5-6) is both a bonus but also something to consider if your child requests a guinea pig aged fifteen but plans to move out to attend university at 18! Guinea pigs are rodents with definite personalities so take the time to interact with a few before taking one home. Some are shy and quiet; others are bold and vocal. You need to choose one (or two) that suit your personality and expectations. One of the most delightful characteristics of guinea pigs is the sounds they make. They purr like a cat when they are happy and relaxed. They make soft squeaks and squeals to communicate and chatter their teeth when disgruntled. They also exhibit a behaviour called ''popcorning'' - they jump up and down when happy or excited). My son (who has two guinea pigs) calls it their 'happy dance'. It's cute to watch; and they really do like people. They bond with their owners and are as interactive and friendly as cats or dogs. The flip side of this is that if they are ignored they can become depressed. Guinea pigs make amazing companion. If you’re considering a pet then check out these cute little creatures.

Imagine the scene – summer is just around the corner, lockdown continues to ease and you are ready to welcome friends and family for some alfresco dining or a garden gathering. But some of your property’s exterior is looking a little tired, your outdoor space needs some TLC and you have good intentions of getting someone in for the job before welcoming visitors back into your home.

Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’, either with or without a leaflet.

And then, as luck would have it, a leaflet drops through your door with details of that landscaper, driveway professional or guttering replacement company you have been looking for.

Remember:

However, all may not be as it seems. While many companies who leaflet drop may be genuine, there are many rogue traders who use this method of advertising and their leaflets are getting very sophisticated. In fact, some are printing leaflets and including details of genuine companies to make themselves look honest and reputable. The leaflet shown here, which was shared by the police, is a genuine company but the phone number was fake and was redirected to a mobile number. The victims of this particular leaflet were mostly elderly, lured by the ‘special rates’. If someone posts a leaflet through your door, never hand over any money until you have a written quote and have checked that the tradesperson and company are genuine. It is also advisable to always get three quotes prior to getting work carried out.

 Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment  Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing  Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out  Feel free to ask to see their credentials and /or examples of their work  Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach If you are in the market for a new driveway or patio or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer – then always use a reputable tradesperson. The door knocking scams of cowboy landscapers and other outdoor trades are becoming more and more common, and their patter and false leaflets are more sophisticated. No reputable tradesperson will come knocking on your door ‘touting’ for business.

If you would like to find a reputable and recommended tradesperson in your area visit www.safelocaltrades. com AND if you are suspicious of a leaflet – accept it politely without committing yourself to anything and then do your research or put it in the recycling bin! Visit www.safelocaltrades.com
