Get in touch if this could be you! I am also looking for an extra helper in Holme (Mondays, 7.15 till 9pm) as our lovely Unit leader there is a bit overstretched with a very busy work and home life. We have spaces in Guides on a Monday (Holme) and Tuesday (Yaxley) but long waiting lists for Rainbows and Brownies. If anyone reading is interested in setting up a new Unit for the younger age groups in Yaxley or Holme
please talk to me – I need at least 3 leaders per group so a group of friends would be ideal. You would be mentored and supported. February Meeting
We start off our new year, and a new decade, with our guest speaker Tim Stubbs and his talk about ‘Growing up in a Lincolnshire Village’. Tim certainly set the standard for the year as we all fell about laughing at his stories. Tim grew up in a Lincolnshire village and his father was the local baker, so from a baby he was taken on the delivery round delivering bread, cakes and pastries in a big baker’s basket to all the customers. It was the days of knock the door and enter, leaving the bread in the kitchen and having a chat with customers and getting a ‘warm by the fire’ on the cold days. It certainly seemed that the women in the villages were strong characters and provided most of the subjects for his talk. Tim’s talk was originally a one night only stand up show in aid of Thorpe Hall after his own ‘big’ sister died, raising over
£50,000 in the first year alone. It was a candid, thoughtful and hilarious view of life in a village about 50 years ago. A thoroughly recommended guest speaker, and he certainly wasn’t short of tales to tell as we ran out of time. We recently had our annual January meal at the Admiral Wells in Holme, as we do not hold a meeting in January. A good evening was had by all with lots of laughter and nattering. Please remember, if anyone is interested in joining please do come along and see what we are about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome. Alison McGuinness, President
Yaxley WI Our speaker for 12 March will be Neil Callan talking about the 'Development of the English Silver Spoon'. We meet as usual in the upstairs room (stairlift available) at the

Lancaster Club, Main street, Yaxley. The doors will be open at 7.00pm and our meeting at 7.30pm and the speaker starting at approximately 8.00pm. Visitors are very welcome.

To a special mum Remembering mums of kids with additional needs on Mother's Day On Mother's Day my Facebook and Instagram feeds fill with photos. The captions declare, ‘Beautiful bouquet from my son!' #mothersday or 'My daughters took me to see Les Mis' #mothersday. In spite of the fact that I have a much-loved son he will never send me flowers or take me to the theatre. Tom has Down Syndrome and is also autistic, nonverbal and has a myriad of complex health problems. I love him and I know he loves me, but I will be his carer long after my friends' kids have left home and started their own families. This is my shout-out to other mums whose Mother's Day celebrations will be bittersweet. You are not alone - There are more of us than you think. Our children may all have different problems, but we understand each other’s sense of being on the outside, at the celebrations 'normal' families take for granted: Christmas, birthday parties, family gettogethers and Mothers' Days. You are AWESOME - You are a full-blown superhero my friend.
88
Your superpower is the ability to deal with situations other parents could not conceive in their worst nightmares. You might acquire knowledge and skills beyond those required by most doctors, memorising medication regimens, side effects, and how to inject or infuse the drugs. You deal calmly with your hysterical child during horrendous medical procedures. You deal with melt-downs in public toilets over hand-dryers! You encourage your child to do the things doctors assured you they would never do. You crash, you burn, and you get up and do it all again the next day anyway. You celebrate your kids' achievements on their terms - Other parents crow about their child's GCSE results or a grade 4 piano exam passed with distinction or a star-of-the-week award for neat handwriting. Our celebrations look different though they are no less important. We celebrated Tom signing 'Mum', 'Dad' and 'love’ for the first time, and we definitely celebrated him taking a bath
without screaming, drowning us or flooding the house! You have the best black sense of humour - 'nuff said. We know that we laugh at things parents of typical kids would not find the least bit funny, like the weird people you meet during all-nighters in A&E departments, discovering excrement smeared over your freshly-painted walls, or an aquarium full of dead fish because your child wanted to feed them and the only box he could reach was the small one posted through the door containing a sample of washing powder! RIP Tom's fish!
You accept, and don’t compare - You become the mum other mothers confide in because their child doesn’t walk, talk, read, or ride a bike as well as their peers. Never mind that your child is 10, non-verbal and rides a large trike because of balance issues! You accept (mostly) other parents’ rights to brag or worry about their kids even though you often feel that sense of 'otherness'. You are special. To mothers of additional needs kids everywhere ...
Happy Mother's Day

What is history?
history
A personal view
For me, the answer to the above question is a bit like a rope. No matter how thick a rope is, it is made up of many different strands wrapped around one another. The only thing that changes is the number of strands in that rope; the thicker the rope the greater number of the strands in it. History is like these rope strands; and history is the story of us By Bill Watt At the personal level it is the story of you and I, the story of our families. Where we were born and grew up and the schools we went to. If we have moved, why we moved. If our parents moved, why they moved. At a deeper personal level, it is why we are who we are. The events, circumstances, decisions and choices we made, which go to make us who we are. It is also the story of the wider society which we live in. Every time I study history I uncover something new, from Roman Britain, through Anglos Saxon Britain up to the reign of King Alfred The Great, who was greatly instrumental in establishing and creating England, as we know it now. When William The Conqueror invaded in 1066 he took over an established, functioning and viable, unified nation state. The major changes that the Normans made was the near total elimination of the Anglo- Saxon aristocracy. Most of the major members of that group died at the Battle of Hastings, along with King Harold. Some of their widows, to try to preserve their estates, married the conquering Norman lords. I am not sure of the percentage, but a number of today’s aristocracy can trace their ancestry back to that fateful day in 1066. As we all know, William ordered the composition of the Doomsday Book; a record that today’s historians often refer to. And, of course, the introduction of the glorious and beautiful Norman built cathedrals, which grace so many of our cities. Of course, apart from pious reasons, they were built to project Norman power. The one, single event that had the biggest impact on England’s aristocracy, since 1066, was King Henry VIII’s Reformation. This was a grab, by the Crown, of the Church’s vast wealth and Henry used that wealth to create a new aristocracy, one who’s primary loyalty lay with him. From that point on, through so many reigns and monarchs, three civil wars, including the War of The Roses, the horrendous turmoil and horror of the Reformation, which, thankfully, Queen Elizabeth 1st, concerning peoples religious practices, managed to lessen the interference of the state in; we have witnessed the slow and gradual evolution of the stable, safe and democratic country we now live in. Yes, we have the chaos of Brexit, but in comparison to the violence and poverty of so many other countries in the world, we are fortunate to live where we do. And now we come to the most extra-ordinary piece of history of all. The piece of history, without which, I would not be sitting here writing this, nor would you be reading it. We will go back a long time; in fact, a very long time. Back to the beginning of time itself, some
13.6 to 13.9 billion years ago. Imagine, if you can, a very, very small piece of matter called a proton, which is an infinitesimal small part of atom. It is so small that a small dot on ink about the size of a dot above the letter “i”can hold 500,000,000,000 of them. You then take those protons and every mote and particle of matter that exists between here and the edge of creation and start to squeeze it down until there is no size of anything at all. You are just on the point of creating the “Big Bang”. The generally accepted view, by scientists, of the beginning of this planet on which we live. I will not even try to explain the sequence of events and evolution that happened from that point, up until Earth began to evolve into a planet upon which life could appear and then, over further millions of years evolve, until the appearance of microbes and single cell species. Not that long ago the generally accepted idea was that microbes and single cell species began to appear in shallow pools. Now there is a strong belief that these microbes and single cell life forms evolved in the depths of the world oceans, around vents in the ocean floor from which very high temperature steam from the many live volcanoes which lie under the ocean floors, escapes from. Even more startlingly, basic life forms have also been found in deep water caves. Life has began in extremely hostile environments. humankind in the species which pre-dates ours and then us, Homo sapiens. Of course, along with the evolution of human species we have the evolution of all the other animal, bird and plant life. Even now, scientists also describe the existence of sponges, in our seas and oceans, that have no apparent internal life, no heartbeat, no circulatory system or anything else. They just Are; and yet are animals. And, finally, there is the sheer, physical beauty of this world we live on. Another amazing realization is that, thanks to that very specific sequence of events, starting from the Big Bang, those events happened to fulfil the requirements for life to appear on this planet of ours. . The wonder of it all is so extra-ordinary that I struggle to find the words to adequately describe my awe of it all. Now and then we hear stories of planets being found, out in space, which could/may be capable of sustaining human life. Whilst these reports are interesting, they are irrelevant. Obviously, they do not provide us with somewhere we could all escape to, if the worse came to the worse. This planet we live is the only one we have, and it is a wonderful place.

money matters
Money Matters
by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
Do you need an accountant for your small business? If you run a small business or you're self-employed, having an accountant can bring some advantages Having an accountant frees up your time so you can focus on your business. An accountant can handle key functions such as bookkeeping, and filing your accounts and tax returns on time. An accountant can also save you money in many areas by increasing tax efficiency and improving cash flow. They can provide invaluable general support by offering general business advice, discussing your ideas and future growth plans. Above all, a good accountant provides you with the reliable financial information you need to make key decisions. Is this accountant right for you? Personality is key in any relationship, so it’s worth meeting your accountant in person before engaging their services. You’ll be working closely together, so a personal connection is important. Ask about their range of services to make sure they can meet all your needs. It’s also good practice to talk about qualifications and experience and are they qualified? Accountants offer different packages For example, you may want to pay an accountant monthly or agree a fixed fee for their services. This means that they deal with all your finances. You can choose the most suitable option depending on how heavily you want your accountant involved.
One-person band, small firm or larger firm
Is the size of your accounting firm right for your needs? Broadly speaking, you should match like with like. If you’re a contractor, sole trader or micro company, then a small firm might suit you best. But if you’re a fast-growing start-up with a big vision, you might be looking for a larger sized firm to match. The location of your accountant It does not matter too much where your accountant is based, as most work can be done remotely. But regular face-to-face meetings are valuable and can be much more productive. A face-to-face meeting allows you to discuss your business in broader terms and may spark creativity. So, it's an advantage to be within travelling distance to your accountant as you can visit in person. If you want to use an accountant, choosing the right one is very important for your business. Our free newsletter of December 2018 also gives advice to taxpayers who file their own tax returns. Source: Companies House January 2020 roundup.

younggazette Fourfields At Fourfields, we are passionate about providing a wellbalanced curriculum offer that will help create well-rounded children who can contribute to society having found their strengths and having had the chance to practice them This year has seen us develop a programme of Enrichment opportunities for our children. Every Friday lunchtime there is a flurry of excitement and activity as they begin to get ready for their Enrichment activities. The dining hall is probably noisier than it is at any point during the rest of the week and the corridors are full to overflowing with children going from one area of the school to another or being counted ready to get on their buses or taxis to take them to their various activities. At a time when schools are being challenged about the kind of curriculum they offer and the need to make sure it is ‘broad and balanced’ I think we can safely

say that our children get a more than broad experience of different areas of not only the curriculum but also life-skills and other engaging activities. This term there are a number of different activities on offer. Some children go off site to be trained in Tang Soo Doo, a martial art. Some of our children are learning the skill of Sign Language to help them communicate with members of the public who may have limited hearing. Others will be gaining a qualification in Lifeguard Skills at Sawtry Pool, whilst others are refining their skills in Music Theatre and Food Technology. Fridays are a great place to be at Fourfields. Smiles are everywhere!
Over the past month we have been learning about different occupations and how different people can help us The children have enjoyed role playing different occupations. The children are excited for our plans to get out into the local community and explore the different facilities we have around us. In the baby unit the children have been enjoying lots of messy play activities; we have been painting, playing in shaving foam, flour and water. We are currently taking bookings for September 2020 and also into 2021! William de Yaxley The pupils at William de Yaxley have recently participated in The Sun newspaper’s ‘Book’s for schools’ campaign This required schools to collect 3500 tokens over the space of two months. We were lucky enough to have the help and cooperation of the local Spar shop. Charlie Burgess, a pupil in Year 6 at William de Yaxley was keen to ensure that Spar were given the thanks and praise they deserve in helping us to achieve our goal. We needed to collect around 65 tokens per day in order to meet our target. Spar helped us to collect all 3500 tokens which will ensure the school receive £600 worth of brand new books to add to our library. A big thank you also goes out to all the parents and grandparents who donated their tokens to help us to get to the target number in time for the January deadline. We are looking forward to receiving our books sometime in March. Thank you Spar, we couldn’t have done it without you.
The event took place between 27 January – 7 February 2020 and pupils turned into avid birdwatchers, keeping track of the birds that enjoy visiting our school. They then submitted the survey results to the RSPB. The children had also been introduced to the many birds we may see around our school and encouraged to learn their names and how to identify them. They encouraged more birds to visit by making bird food and putting up more bird boxes around the school grounds. Using their newly purchases binoculars all the children were actively involved with finding out which birds enjoy visiting Yaxley. If you would like any more information about the birdwatch or wish to do similar at home, please take a look at the RSPB website for more information. Metacognition is about our own ability to think about and generate our own thoughts. At Yaxley Infant School we teach metacognition as it can really improve children’s performance in their learning. A simple definition is “Thinking about thinking” but metacognition also encompasses the regulation of these thoughts and of course the ability to change them. We encourage and teach metacognition in a simple and
straight forward way here at Yaxley Infant School with the use of our learning character puppets. Recently, we have been talking about being responsible. Our character is ‘Responsible Rabbit’ she likes to help, be independent, organised, takes care of things and tinkers to improve things. We encourage all the children to be independent and responsible, laying the foundations for future learning and success.

farmer tom
We hope March finds you fit and well as we are set to welcome warmer temperatures and longer days. After an autumn of rainfall that finds no comparison in even the most ancient of living memories, we are really looking forward to spring and all that it brings That said, in recent weeks we’ve been looking back as in 2019 we were presented with the opportunity for fame and fortune - or at least a chance to be on the telly! We were approached by Quest TV, a channel owned by Discovery, to take part in a 10 episode TV Show called ‘Born Mucky’, and as we’re pretty passionate about showing people what happens on the other side of the farm gate, we said “yes”! On the farm, we try to avoid drama, and yet for 4 months from June last year we followed by a film crew revelling in the trials of farm life from wild storms flattening crops and messing with harvest to a gruelling test from the Red Tractor inspector
and going behind the scenes at the sheep market. Episodes are still airing at 9pm on Tuesdays and you can catch up on ‘D-Play’ online. Whilst there were a few technical errors - eg. Farmer Tom talking about chickens and the editor showed a picture of a turkey! Anyway, if you’ve watched any of them, thank you, and we hope you enjoyed it. Back to March 2020 though, as there’s plenty of British produce in season to pick from such as: cauliflower, kale, leeks, purple sprouting broccoli, spinach, spring onions, and wild nettles. We hope you enjoy your spring season and we look forward to connecting with you all next month!

A form of physiotherapy has been used on people for centuries but it wasn’t until around 35 years ago that the principles started to be applied to our pets. After all, animals are essentially made up of the same things we are, their bodies prone to problems and their joints susceptible to degeneration just like us The aim of physiotherapy is to reduce the pain caused by disease, injury or surgery, improved function and ultimately to help our pets enjoy life again.

nature watch
naturewatch Talking weather - what does spring offer? Spring is a time when traditionally new life appears and the planet awakens from the cold of winter but what will spring 2020 have to offer? Recent weather trends have seen prolonged dry periods in spring which is bad news for spring sown food and flowers alike On the whole, it seems that we have had a warm but wet winter with many areas particularly in floodplains constantly under water and what does this mean for invertebrates. Heavy waterlogging and flooding is extremely bad news for those that are sheltering in the ground such as hibernating bumblebees or solitary bee larvae and even to earthworms whose numbers will have been greatly reduced. All bad news for those trying to grow on this land in the year ahead. There is though a double whammy for growers as warm and wet also means no hibernation for slugs and snails which will have instead remained active throughout the winter doing what they do eating and breeding. It seems then that winter has already got us off to a bad growing start so what is really needed is a warm spring with sufficient overnight showers this will help plants grow and the beneficial invertebrates revive the only good thing about an arid spring is it would at least stop the slugs in their tracks but what flowers could thrive for our pollinators in this case. If current weather patterns set in to become the long term norm then we may all have to re-evaluate what is grown and when as our fauna will be forced to change too.

Making Nature’s Connections As part of a programme of outreach work, the Wildlife Trust in Cambridgeshire’s education and community team based at the Great Fen have historically visited community groups in the region to bring to bring the beauty and fascination of the natural world to the fingertips of those who may not be able to easily access the outdoors These Nature Connections sessions have been gathering momentum over the last few years and are offered to community groups, care homes and recovery groups. The sessions are designed to connect people with nature who may be restricted to outdoor access by limited mobility or illness. They are a wonderful, gentle way of engaging with people about their childhood memories of wildlife or being outdoors, and involve simple activities using natural materials. The team have had wonderful support from a volunteer to deliver them and who puts a lot of energy into making the sessions unique and engaging.
The team take natural objects into the homes, for example scent bags with natural herbs, 'feely' bags with cones, stones, shells etc, and greenery such as plants and leaves. Simple crafts using natural materials, planting seeds or plug plants, making colourful images using leaves, petals etc all help create a sense of wellbeing. The positive response from these sessions have had a profound impact on the staff and volunteers delivering them. One care home worker said: ‘The Wildlife Trust ladies included each resident and family member into the afternoon, and also made sure that everyone was given a chance to speak.
We would like to thank the Trust for joining us and delivering such a wonderful afternoon.’ Another session was with the Blind Association in Peterborough on the topic of bird song. The group were were varied in terms of stages of sight loss, some having been blind all their lives while others had lost sight or had partial vision. Various props were used used and bird song played to help identify the different birds. The team took real pleasure in delivering all the sessions, gaining a lot from delivering them as well as those who attended.

Foot Notes What is the difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist?
I suffer with smelly, sweaty feet. Could a Chiropodist help me?
There is no difference. Podiatrist is the internationally accepted term, but both have the same qualifications and both need to be registered with the Health Professions Council.
Absolutely. In some people the sweat glands of the feet are over active, producing more sweat than they should. Some people also have greater than normal amounts of bacteria on their skin and it is the reaction of the bacteria with the sweat which causes the unpleasant odour. A chiropodist will be able to advise on footwear, foot hygiene and any sprays or creams which might help.
They treat and advise on all matters relating to feet. Most people think of ingrown toenails, but they also treat Athlete’s foot, fungal nail infections, corns, verrucae and cracked heels. What about foot pain? Yes, a good Chiropodist will be able to advise, diagnose and provide a treatment plan for biomechanical problems of the feet as well as bunions and toe deformities.
Foot queries answered
What about permanently cold feet? A podiatrist could certainly look into the possible causes of your cold feet and make recommendations. Often cold feet are linked to poor circulation and become more common with age. Podiatrists check pulse points and can refer to other health care professionals if required.

fit for life
fitforlife
Get Motivated. Get Fit. Reinvigorate your fitness routine
Get up, get dressed, get out
It's several weeks since my New Year resolution to lose weight and get fit. It's cold and damp outside. The gym is miles away, and there’s a TV program on about a knitting group in Nicaragua that looks interesting, and this sofa is ever so comfortable.
It sounds simple but getting out of the door is the biggest hurdle. If you can force yourself to go through the motions of getting into your exercise kit, walking to the door and out of the house you're 90% of the way towards actually exercising. If you're standing outside dressed for exercise it's harder to change your mind and sneak back inside for another slice of cake. Set an alarm to tell you when it's time for your exercise class, run, etc. Make sure you've got workout gear that makes you feel good. Something stylish, comfortable, colourful, or high-tech; it doesn’t matter, use whatever works for you. Make the getting dressed part something to look forward to. Baggy, stained, holey jogging bottoms will put you off the idea of stepping outside. Then just grab your keys, open the door and step outside.
My self-motivation tank is empty! Does your determination and energy to get fit after New Year’s Day seems to run out sooner each year? Do you need to get fit? Do you need to lose weight? Do you know you’ll feel better if you do? It’s so much easier to fall back into old habits than to actively make a difference to our health isn’t it? So how do we stay motivated? Motivation is all in the mind. There is no physical difference between those who get fit and those who get fat. The fit people are just those who manage to leave the house and move their bodies. Clearly, we need to help our mind overcome the inertia currently preventing us moving from the couch.

Set a short-term goal The ultimate goal might be to fit into a size 10 dress, or have a perfect six pack with matching biceps, but realistically that's probably more than a few months away. Pick a goal that you can achieve within the next two months. Dropping one dress size, being able to run non-stop for 1 km, being able to do a proper pull-up. Achieving goals is as important as setting them when trying to keep your motivation high. Small successful steps build one on the other until all of a sudden, your ultimate goal is just within reach. Keep on keeping on. Don't over-think it, just do it.

Jo Gardiner is a fully qualified sports massage and pregnancy massage therapist who has been working at Broadway Chiropractic Clinic in Peterborough for 19 years. Here, she shares with Gazette readers the exciting results she's seeing with my CBD oil massages
• Reduction in chronic pain • Reduction in inflammation • Helping with anxiety and de-stressing • Encouraging the body to speed up the healing process • Improving sleep, post massage
exp. 25 March 2020.
I have a particular interest in neurological diseases because I have one myself, so I have been very intrigued, during my weekly work with a gentleman with Parkinson’s, to discover the numerous benefits that he is experiencing. He is finding that CBD really de-stresses him and reduces his anxiety. (In Parkinson's there is a reduction in the production of dopamine (the feelgood hormone) in the brain. His walking (shuffling) also improves after the massage and his neck spasms have reduced greatly, too! Whilst this could be because I've loosened his muscles manually, it could also be because of the natural anti-inflammatory properties of Hapi Hemp CBD Oil. He definitely has a much greater sense of relaxation and happiness after this oil is used for the massage, compared to any using a normal massage oil! Unlike a normal massage

I just had my tooth replaced in under one hour! With mini dental implants you can have your missing teeth replaced simply and affordably in one treatment visit. Why wait? Imagine smiling, eating and speaking with confidence and comfort again. Restore the attractiveness of your smile at a much lower cost than the larger style implants. In one short visit, turn your dreams of a more comfortable and attractive smile into a beautiful reality.
when I would wipe the skin afterwards, with CBD I don't wipe, and I advise not to shower after the massage until morning to let the oil soak in. When you come to the clinic, we ask you to purchase the oil from us which you then take away and bring back every time you want a massage! So, you can even try massaging your partner at home too!

I was very excited when we started stocking the Hapi Hemp CBD Oil products at the clinic, not least because I use these products myself as I have had multiple sclerosis (MS) for 22 years, but also due to the great feedback that is emerging from patients who are enjoying these massages at the clinic. There’s still testing being carried out on CBD Oil, but the results being reported back to me are speaking for themselves!

Join the fight in the war against scammers It will come as no surprise that fraud is the most commonly experienced crime in the UK, with costs to the economy and individual victims running into billions of pounds. In January 2020 alone, 88K was lost to Courier Fraud in Cambridgeshire with much more lost across other different types of frauds, especially Romance Fraud The impact of fraud, scams and related offences can be devastating; ranging from unaffordable personal losses suffered by vulnerable victims to impacting the ability of organisations to stay in business. Data breaches continue to be a key enabler of fraud, with personal and financial information obtained in a breach which is then used to commit frauds affecting individuals, the private and public sectors alike. Scammers are becoming more and more sophisticated in their methods; often posing as police, banking or government bodies in attempts to promote an authoritative approach.
However, there are many agencies working harder than ever to stamp out the scammers including Friends Against Scams; an initiative which empowers members of the public to join the fight on fraud and become a Scam Champion. Friends Against Scams is a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative that aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams. The county-wide initiative is the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) who are committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal and online fraud to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders.
Did you know?
Scams cost the UK economy between £5-10 billion a year
53 per cent of people over 65 have been targeted by scams Only five per cent of scams are reported
The average scam victim has lost over £3,000
You are twice as likely to fall victim to fraud than any other type of crime
On a national level, Action Fraud works to inform and empower members of the public about the latest scams, and also offers a fraud reporting service. If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it . To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, go to www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk
And it is easy to get involved. The first step is to take the Friends Against Scams online learning at www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/elearning/Cambridgeshire You could then become a Scams Champion, gaining all the information and resources you need to help spread the word – see www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/become-a-scamchampion
