Lakeside Healthcare Retirement from Yaxley Surgery It is with much regret we announce the retirement of Dr Daphne Hammersley from Lakeside Healthcare at Yaxley with effect from 30 June 2020. Dr Daphne Hammersley joined the Practice in 1997 when the partners at the time were Doctors Tom Davies, Beryl Dennis, Phil Hartropp and Chris Grant, along with Drs Richard Withers and Alison Graham who still remain. The other Yaxley based partners currently are Drs Jas Bhari, Peresh Gela, Jaspreet Bhatia, Madhuri Gupta, Mitesh Thanki and Stephanie BettsMasters. There have been huge changes during this period namely building extensions and additional roles team which now includes Nurse and

Emergency Care Practitioners, a Prescribing Pharmacist and Pharmacy Technician along with the Practice Manager, Support, Administrative and Reception Staff. Clinical work has adapted to incorporate new ways of working including video consultations using the latest technology all of which is enormously helpful in the current Lockdown situation. During her time Dr Hammersley became a Fellow of the College, was involved in the training of new GPs and led on Women’s Health. She was also a much admired member of our Practice and popular with many of our patients. Her presence will be greatly missed and we wish her all the best for the future.

World Hepatitis Day World Hepatitis Day is on 28 July 2020 is held each year to raise awareness about hepatitis, a group of infectious diseases that attack the liver and affect people all over the globe. The day also promotes testing and prevention for all five types of the disease: A, B, C, D and E. The World Hepatitis Alliance established this day in 2008.

Monthly Closure Date The Practice will be closed for Clinical Governance purposes between 12.30pm and 4.00pm on Wednesday 15 July 2020 Emergency Telephone number is 01733 240478.

It is amazing the different subjects that we have covered, one person writes something which usually brings a response from many others. Like many people when the lockdown first started we took the opportunity to tidy our cupboards and drawers resulting in rediscovering lots of things, one member is now a champion hula hooper and others are thinking of entering the next round of 'Bake Off' after making innovative meals from items found at the back of their cupboards. And of course most of our gardens could be shown at Chelsea! We have had fun remembering childhood games and rhymes and wondering if we would still be able to skip to them, that's if we were allowed social contact. At the beginning of May we celebrated our 102nd Birthday and should have been dining out but of course it was cancelled or should I say deferred, so instead at 7 0'clock

Home WI

we raised a glass at home and toasted the wonderful organisation that is the WI. There is a wealth of knowledge and experiences within our group which was proved when the subject of holidays arose. Although most holidays were very pleasant one member had to be airlifted off a mountain after injuring her ankle and another had an encounter with bandits in Mexico which actually proved less scary than an encounter with a policeman! It is great that we have all these memories good and bad to look back on as who knows when we will next get a holiday. Because most of us are in the vulnerable age group we have not been able to do voluntary work but it has not stopped us helping charity as members knit, sew & crochet blankets for the Salvation Army. Like other groups we do not know when we will be able to meet up again but are just thankful that we are able to contact each other and remain cheerful but above all healthy. We would like to wish all members past and present continued good health (and of course all residents of Yaxley).

Alison McGuinness, President

So, how are we all coping with the Corona Virus Lockdown? When we initially had to lockdown it all seemed surreal and strange, and once we got past the strange stockpiling of toilet rolls and lack of flour in the shops, we have become used to it, I think. Our members have, however, been keeping themselves busy. We started the lockdown with our committee members handing out bunches of lovely hand-tied spring daffodils to all our members, leaving them safely on their doorsteps. We have two Zoom online meetings each week, one is a coffee morning and the other a Wine O’Clock in the evening, anything alcoholic is optional! The weekly quiz set by a committee member is proving very popular and keeping our brains ticking over. Our Federation has also been sending out their Lockdown Quiz, our brains are well and truly working hard.

As seen on the National News, Cambridgeshire seems to be leading the way in sewing scrubs for our NHS Trusts along with scrub hats and bags for taking scrubs home for washing. There are some amazing patterns modelled in the press. Our knitters are also busy with their charity knitting, lots of knitting being done but nattering at the moment isn’t possible, at least not face to face, I am sure it’s going on behind the scenes. Let’s hope things start to improve and we all meet up again soon, we certainly won’t forget this year in a hurry. Our thoughts are with all those either admitted to Hospital or suffering the symptoms of the virus at home, we hope you recover quickly. To those enduring the lockdown, and especially those working the frontline within the NHS and Emergency Services, and all those classed as a Key Worker. Stay Safe, Stay Alert and Keep Smiling.

Summer fire safety Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents to take extra care while outdoors this summer With temperatures rising, fires in open areas of land can easily spread and become out of control. Group Commander Paul Clarke, head of community fire safety at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We want to help ensure that people enjoy the sunny weather while it’s here safely. High temperatures and dry areas of land can be perfect conditions for a fire to spread. Something as simple as not stubbing a cigarette out properly, or using a disposable barbecue on grass, can start a fire that can develop quickly.” There are some simple steps we urge residents to take to help prevent an outdoor fire: 1. Put disposable barbecues on bricks, do not place directly on grass. 2. Ensure cigarettes are completely out

Test your smoke alarm! Did you know that you should test your smoke alarms at least once a month? Or that you should have smoke alarms on every floor of your home? Or that Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service do free home visits to make sure your home is fire safe?

It only takes one accident to start a fire. Fire kills. Let’s prevent it. Sign up to receive the latest news and safety advice from your fire service Visit this website for helpful tips and advice: https://firekills.campaign.gov.uk/

3. Do not throw cigarettes out of car windows onto grass verges or vegetation.

5. Use barbecues on a hard, flat surface, away from grass, shrubs or fencing.

6. Talk to your children about the dangers of starting a fire.

For more information log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk, follow us on social media or call 01480 444500

4. Do not leave glass bottles lying on the ground, the sun’s rays reflect through the glass and can start a fire

inspire St Peter's Church Dear Friends,

Get the call - become an on-call firefighter Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking to recruit more oncall firefighters to help serve local communities across the county. CFRS is looking for men and women from all backgrounds to become on-call firefighters and provide emergency cover from either their home or their workplace. On-call firefighters are a vital part of our Service and community. They respond to a wide range of incidents, from fighting fires, attending road traffic collisions, animal rescues to supporting other emergency services. In addition to responding to emergency incidents, our on-call firefighters support their communities by providing information and advice on a range of community safety topics. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours). It’s a hugely rewarding role, and we hope to encourage members of the community from all backgrounds to get in touch and find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter. As I write this, it will be 12 weeks since the church in Yaxley (and across the country and the world in some places) left the building. Many if not all of us will have had to come to terms with some very different circumstances in which to operate in both our family, school and work settings and within the community. St Peter’s, Yaxley were able to move very quickly on to the internet for our services and while it is not the same, we are worshipping together through weekly services on our You Tube Channel – just search St Peter’s, Yaxley You Tube. We also have children’s work videos on here and a virtual Messy Church – please do come and have a look and see what is on there. We are also really aware that some people do not have access to social media for many reasons and we are sending out a weekly service sheet to these people to ensure that they still feel part of our church community. If you would like to receive this, then please do give me a ring and I will happily add you to the list. It has been wonderful to see how our community of Yaxley has come together in so many different ways to support each other through the Yaxley and Farcet Coronavirus support network, to seeing neighbours caring for each other, to the good humour that people have had at some of the weird circumstances we have found ourselves living within. Thank you to all those who have continued to work during this time in many different places in our community and beyond to keep us safe and ensure that we have the things that we need. I would also like to say thank you for everyone that has contributed to making this community what it is including the

lovely posters and bears that I have seen as I have walked around the village – what a great place to be in a difficult time. Thank you also to the many people who have continued to keep our foodbank stocked up over these last few weeks. You will not be surprised to know that demand is increasing, and we expect this to continue. We know that some of the usual places to donate are not operational at the moment so feel free to leave any donations on the Vicarage doorstep and we promise not to eat it and to get it to Foodbank as soon as possible! You, like us, might be asking some really big questions about what is going on in our world at this time. We know that people are seeking and asking questions and if we can help at all, then please do get in touch or have a look at some of the things on our You Tube Channel. What I do believe very much is, that in the middle of this awful virus, good is happening and God is at work in our world. Do join in our services on You Tube as we think about some of these big questions together. Jesus said “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.” John 14:1 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” John 20: 19 With every blessing in this coming month. Taxation of Coronavirus (COVID-19) Grants The Government grants for Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) and Self Employed Income Support Scheme (SEISS) are being treated as taxable. Broadly, the coronavirus support grants that have been made will have replaced the revenues of businesses and individuals, and therefore those grants made should be subject to tax. There proposed legislation will be incorporated into Finance Bill 2020 that may be in force by the time this editorial is published that will apply to what is defined as ‘COVID-19 support scheme payments’. The legislation confirms that all COVID-19 support scheme payments are taxable under either Income or Corporation Tax as appropriate.

In respect of SEISS and CJRS, the draft legislation will give HMRC the power to: • Use information and inspection powers to check a claim has not been overpaid and that a CJRS payment has been used to pay furloughed employee costs. • Raise Income Tax assessments to recover amounts from the recipient of a payment: o

which they are not entitled to,

o for CJRS, where the payment has not been used to pay furloughed employee costs, such as wages, PAYE and NICs or pension contributions. o The recipient will be the self-employed individual or partner for SEISS and the employer for CJRS.

• Charge a penalty where a person deliberately makes an incorrect claim for SEISS or under the CJRS and they fail to notify HMRC about the situation within 30 days. For CJRS payments, penalties could also apply where they deliberately do not use the payment for furloughed employee costs. o Penalties will fall under the rules and, as these will be treated as deliberate and concealed actions, the penalties could be anything between 30% and 100% of the over claimed amounts. • Make a company officer jointly and severally liable for Income Tax assessments raised on CJRS payments where: o that officer deliberately made a CJRS claim where the company was not eligible and o HMRC can show there is a serious risk that the company will not be able to pay the Income Tax assessment.

CJRS grants received by employers must be paid to their employees that may be topped up above the scheme grant at their own expense if they wish. From the Farm The beautiful and warm sunny days that we have enjoyed over the past weeks has been good for the soul, haven’t they? The rain we needed (as farmers) finally did come and we have been blessed with intermittent sunshine with that, so we are very thankful the crops are trying to catch up now. With this past autumn and spring being one of the wettest times we’ve seen here, we are looking in hopeful anticipation at the fields we were able to sow this year. The rapeseed harvest is the first one that should be ready to combine, and we will begin harvesting that as soon as the moisture levels in the crop are sufficiently low and the ears are perfectly ripe. We pray for days of sunshine during harvest so we can bring those crops in quickly without losing quality along the way! With the current pandemic, we know how vital it is that Britain have a food supply it can count on and we are pleased to be a part of that answer. This summer, we have loved watching the lambs frolic in the sunshine as they zoom around the fields together. Their mothers watching nearby, always with a mouthful of grass! Our sheep have been able to enjoy the newly cut grass fields that

were harvested to make hay. This is very useful as the sheep break up any matted vegetation and push the seeds onto the soil which helps them to germinate and replenish the pasture. Haymaking is an important part of farming too as it provides feed for animals in the winter months, and it’s amazing to see the pastures regenerate after the hay has been led away. It’s wonderful in farming how we see nature working together supporting different biological processes. We try as farmers to harness that relationship and support that process as much as possible. “Why do farmers farm, given their economic adversities on top of the many frustrations and difficulties normal to farming? And always the answer is: "Love. They must do it for love." Wendell Berry The wildlife around us is very important to us and we are pleased to see the new beetle banks and wildflower strips growing strong on our farm as well. We planted a few new areas this spring in order to connect lone ponds in fields to woodland and other wildlife areas on the farm. Among other creatures,

the bees and beetles will make use of those and this is an important part of making sure their numbers do not decline, as well as giving a home and conduit for those that predate on the insects that can spoil our crops; nature keeping everything in balance! We can all play a part in creating bug and bee super-highways by planting flowers in our gardens connected to other green areas, also along verges, canals, sides of the roads and hedgerows would allow them to travel over a wider area. We do hope you enjoy your summer months and if they’re not in stock in your garden or allotment, you can look for these British foods in season this month: Apricots, artichokes, asparagus, beetroot, blackberries, blueberries, broad beans, broccoli, carrots, cherries, courgettes, crab, cucumber, haddock, fennel, lamb, melon, peas, peppers, potatoes, raspberries, rocket, spring onions, salmon, scallops, strawberries, tomatoes, and watercress. Thank you for buying British, buying local, buying best and supporting British farmers, fishermen and food producers! By Lisa

Girlguiding The Covid-19 crisis has put a stop to Guiding as it has to most other parts of life. Right? No, wrong! In the Yaxley area girls and leaders are taking part in all types of Guiding dependent on the leaders’ time and abilities - regular online meetings, doing badge work, learning new skills and sharing them on social media, taking part in virtual camps and even camping for real in their gardens. Just last weekend there was a whole weekend of online Guiding activities streamed in real time for all sections called Adventure at Home to join in with. If your children from 5 years old – whether they are in Guiding or not – are bored, do take a look at the Girlguiding website for loads of ideas! The Rangers and some of the Guide Units are meeting online and some are working through an activity pack and earning their badges. Brownies are being set weekly challenges. Some of the leaders have full time jobs and some also have their own children to educate/caring responsibilities so parental help is encouraged. We are hoping to return to face to face meetings in September but this is out of our hands of course. In the meantime we are still open to current members and new girls and leaders! You can find out more on the website www.girlguiding.org and when you’ve had a look there is a link to the registration site for girls to join at any age from 5 to 18, and also for adults to volunteer for whatever you have time for. I am more than happy to chat to anyone about getting involved in Guiding, or if you register on the website we will get in touch with you – My number is 01487 831451 Janice Osborn District Commissioner, Yaxley e: janiceo.girlguiding@gmail.com

Yaxley Infant School Shout Out to Parents, Home Learning and Prize-Winning Bunting. It seems like a very long time since we last wrote to you informing you of the things we are doing in school. Over the past 12 weeks we have seen unprecedented changes to the way in which we deliver learning and parents have responded in a fantastic way. When our school partially closed on 20 March, we asked parents to balance home schooling, work and family commitments. We supported them through online learning tasks, videos and helpful hints. Through social media and online Learning Journals we were able to see all the fantastic things that were going on at home. These included a classroom displays in living rooms, outdoor learning and even families using their allotment to grow fruit and vegetables. Thank you to all the parents, you have been fantastic and risen to the challenge perfectly! The YIS team x

As we all know the partial shutdown of schools coincided with VE Day. Trying to work in new and creative ways, we set our children the challenge of seeing if we could fill the front of the school fence with bunting made by the children at home. We had overwhelming support for this, families inundated us with bunting that their children and siblings had made. Overall, we had 130 flags that were posted to school. The British Legion also gave us a prize of craft materials for our efforts. The last 12 weeks have been a huge challenge and we would like to thank all our parent’s/ carers staff and governors for their overwhelming support, it has been truly remarkable what everyone has been able to achieve. We have missed all our pupils and families and hope to see you as soon as it is safe. Take care of each other.

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School After a strange few months we are so pleased to things getting back to normal at Little Acorns. We have been open during the lockdown period to support the key workers who have helped our community in this difficult time. We have made sure the children attending have had lots of fun didn’t feel any of the worries the pandemic has caused. The children enjoyed baking activities, lots of arts and crafts but most of all being outside and making the most of the sunshine. We have been welcoming children back over the past few weeks, everybody has enjoyed being back at nursery, seeing all of their friends and having lots of fun. If you are looking for a nursery space for your child and would like some information on what Little Acorns has to offer please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacornsdaynursery.co.uk

Holme Village Preschool It’s been a very strange term for Holme Village Preschool having had to temporarily close in March. We are extremely happy to be re-opening on Monday 8th June and are very excited to have the children back. We are lucky to have quite a large space for a smaller number of children, so we will be following government guidance and keeping the children in small social “bubbles” while inside. Thankfully we also have a wonderful outdoor play area for the children to enjoy the lovely weather. For the remainder of this term the children will be learning about Summer as well as “Going to School”, which we hope will help prepare the older children for their new schools in September. Holme Village Pre-school has spaces available for 2, 3 and 4 year old for a September start.

Kip McGrath One of the most talked about subjects in the world at the moment, is of course, the coronavirus. The virus has impacted each and every single person in some way, from being confined to your own house for weeks on end, to losing loved ones. However, I feel that one topic in particular has not been discussed enough. Children’s education. Our children, our friends and family’s children have all missed out on important schooling and social interactions, not to mention exams that were cancelled after so much hard work and preparation. Many parents will be feeling the burden and pressure of home educating, only made harder by teaching techniques that have changed over the years. Although I am now 29, I know how fortunate I was at 5 years old to have my mum completing her teacher training in the same school I attended. She would often try out her newfound knowledge on myself and my older siblings. However, despite this experience, even she can admit how challenging home schooling in the current climate would be, particularly with the lack of freedom

to roam during down times! In my opinion, all parents need a huge pat on the back for the fantastic work they have been doing and continue to do so whilst we wait for normality to resume. Mum (Gill Terry - Centre Director) and I are closer than ever and love working together. We share a passion for helping and supporting children and that is why we put our hearts and souls into running two local tuition centres - Kip McGrath Education Centre Peterborough North and Peterborough South. We understand that all children learn differently, at different paces and this is reflected in our approach to tuition. Our fantastic team consists of 10 qualified teachers who share our vision and ethos. We pride ourselves on consistency and even during this terrible pandemic, we have been able to continue supporting our students with online lessons on our bespoke and secure website. Give us a try with a free assessment. Book online at kipmcgrath.co.uk/ peterborough-north Take care and stay safe. Becky Thomas(Centre Manager)

Year Six return to William de Yaxley CE Academy Some of us returned to school this week after being at home in Lockdown for 10 weeks. We are glad to be back! We all agreed that we felt excited to come back to school. We felt ready for a change of surroundings and were desperate to see the faces of people we had not seen in ages. None of us were worried about the social distancing rules, mostly because we were already used to the new normal. What did worry us was that we might be in a bubble with children we didn’t know but the teachers had clearly thought about who we should be with, so we were pleasantly surprised when we got to school. The first day back was a bit unusual and took some getting used to. We are in a bubble with 7 other children and we can’t see or play with the other children who were in our class before lockdown. We are not in our usual classroom and we each have our own desk. We have

to wash our hands regularly and we do not touch anything that does not belong to us. This too became the new normal and within a short time we felt comfortable with the new situation. We really like being in a small group of children and we are all enjoying the structure that our day provides us with. It feels slightly more relaxed than it was back in March, but we are all enjoying the learning and the opportunity to get back to normal with school work. Our project for the next few weeks is Australia. We are writing Aboriginal ‘dreamings’ (stories) and painting Papunya Dot paintings to illustrate our stories. We are reading a new book called ‘Running Wild’, by Michael Morpurgo and learning about the ecological issues that the book raises. It’s good to be back. We all love our ‘New Normal’. naturewatch Talking flatworms Land flatworms have smooth bodies covered in mucus and range in shape from flattened to cylindrical. Unlike earthworms and leeches, flatworm bodies are not segmented, and they can be separated from slugs by the lack of tentacles and completely smooth bodies. Land flatworms can be found in dark, damp places such as in the soil, leaf litter, at the bases of plants or under logs, stones and other objects. There are at least three native species of land flatworms in the UK, but more than ten non-native species. Non-native land flatworms have been accidentally introduced to the UK in imported pot plants and newly arrived species continue to be discovered. Once

introduced these flatworms can reproduce rapidly, cannot be eradicated, and pose a risk to native soil invertebrates such as earthworms by feeding on them. Scientists have found that in some areas, non-native flatworms can reduce local earthworm populations by 20% - this could have a huge impact on soil health and agriculture, as well as our native soil wildlife. How to find out if you have flatworms: Spend 10 minutes searching for flatworms in a nearby outdoor space – it could be your back garden, or somewhere you visit during your daily exercise. Look in damp, dark places such as under wood, stones and plastic, and underneath plant pots.

However, the COVID-19 lockdown has been a major wakeup call for many people. Local businesses are the beating heart of our villages, towns and suburban communities. 3. Enjoy a personalised, tailored shopping experience

One of the main differentiators between buying www.lefleurboutique.co.uk locally and online is the fact that you are buying lefleurboutiqueonlinefrom local people and personalities. Buying locally provides that personal touch, with local businesses COVID-19 compliant passionate about going the extra mile to help

As the nation inches its way towards a ‘new normal’, consumers will have to make smarter decisions about where and who they shop with in the months ahead. Buying locally will become essential for local communities to continue to thrive and support one another on the other side of this pandemic. We’ve put together ethical and economical reasons why more of us should choose local suppliers and producers over large conglomerates and online brands.

1. Breathe new life into the local economy Research suggests that for every £10 spent at the tills of a local independent store it provides a further £50 for the local economy. The more revenue local shop owners receive, the more they put back into the local community in the form of employee wages and spending their profits on other local businesses, sharing the wealth and underpinning a sustainable local economy.

2. It maintains a strong jobs market for local communities Having busy, thriving stores in local towns and villages fosters local employment and self-employment. In turn, local employees spend their hard-earned income back in the local economy too in a self-perpetuating cycle. Buying locally creates a market for jobs, giving the next generation career avenues to pursue.

you find what you need rather than what a larger business wants to sell to you.

4. It supports entrepreneurs offering originality to retail Local businesses tend to offer a credible alternative to high-street chain stores. Independent stores offer engagement and originality that can provide a breath of fresh air. Whether it’s alternative products or a unique store layout, shopping locally can keep our retail experiences wholesome and interesting.

5. Keep local produce alive Buying locally empowers independent specialists to keep producing authentic, traditional local products. Local firms tend to be more agile and receptive to the needs of their customers, producing and sourcing products and goods that meet the changing demands of their communities.

Buying locally is a lifestyle choice. A chance to seek better value, customer care and give something back to our local communities in their time of need, so please shop local and help our community thrive. If you are in need of something please call the local shops as most of them are offering a delivery service and will continue to do so. Stay Safe.

6. It limits your carbon footprint Last but by no means least, shopping locally is kinder to the wider environment too. First and foremost, local stores will often stock a greater percentage of goods sourced and produced locally, reducing the miles from producer to consumer. Furthermore, using local stores that you can walk or cycle to limits your own carbon footprint.

Lockdown Running I started running around the village every day to stop me going stir crazy, when my gym was forced to close. I used to go to Energie Fitness Gym in Queensgate 4 or 5 times a week. I did classes and personal training for weights. I used to run outside three or more times a week before lockdown, always with at least one of my 4 running buddies. I used to run a half marathon or two or three 10K races every month. At first, I found it very difficult running alone, but decided to donate a pound for every mile I ran in April to the NHS. This kept me motivated and I managed to run 161.8 miles, so I donated £162 to the NHS. I have carried on running every day and today will be Day 85 of my running streak of at least 5 miles each day.

I have made more friends in the village, since I have been posting my runs on the Yaxley Gazette Group, than I have in almost 41 years that I’ve lived here! I get quite a few people calling out to me by name now when I’m running. Now that it’s allowed to run with a friend socially distanced, I run with a friend about once a week. I am missing my 4 running buddies and competing in races a lot. Hopefully things will return to normal soon. By Yaxley resident, Shirley Wiggins

staysafe Need a tradesman to carry out work in your home? Here’s what you need to know Eileen Le Voi Safe Local Trades & Service

www.safelocaltrades.com

The Government’s easing of some of the lock down measures means that many of our Safe Local Trades members have returned to work; much of it carried out in customers’ homes. Social distancing rules apply in the same way as in other aspects of life as we currently know it. So how does this affect you if you require a tradesperson to visit your property? In simple terms, you ARE permitted to ask a tradesperson to carry out work on your property (inside and out) or in your garden. It is personal choice on the part of the customer, as long as a few simple rules are adhered to: • As of May 4, the Government guidance is that tradespeople can continue to work providing they are well, and they or no-one in their household has COVID-19 symptoms. • If your neighbour has tradespeople visiting their home; they are NOT flouting the social distancing rules simply by having work carried out at their property. • As a tradesperson or cleaner, you should maintain a safe distance (at least 2 metres) from any household occupants at all times and ensure good ventilation in the area where they are working, including opening the window.

• Any households self-isolating due to COVID-19 or anyone with vulnerable occupants cannot re-employ their workers as they risk spread of the virus according to the government guidance. • Before attending a job, maintenance workers should contact families 20 minutes before they arrive so homeowners can prepare to keep a safe 2 metre distance. • Once inside, they should wash hands for 20 seconds and adhere to the social distancing rules. • Tradesmen may ask households to leave all internal doors open to minimise contact with door handles. • Face coverings have not yet been deemed mandatory but can be worn as a precaution. While the Government’s announcement is welcome news for tradespeople, we do understand that some customers may still feel a little anxious about allowing visitors into their home – particularly when members of their own family are not able to come and see them and

the same applies to the family of the individual traders. All our Safe Local Trades members are aware of the social distancing and other rules around carrying out home improvements at customers’ homes, and the importance of adhering to them. We would advise customers who are thinking about resuming work in their home – perhaps those who put their home improvements on hold prior to the lockdown – to get in touch with the relevant trader through the Safe Local Trades website in the first instance. They can discuss any concerns they may have directly, and our traders will be more than happy to discuss those with the customer. It may also be worth noting that many of our traders will now be looking to complete existing jobs booked before the 20th March, so now is a great time to get in touch if you need some decorating, landscaping, tiling or any other home improvement project which requires a professional, as their services will be in high demand.

LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY . Some facts.. Why do you need a Power of Attorney? • More of us become unable to manage our affairs these days, without a Power of Attorney your family may need to go to Court. This can cause lots of hassle, delay and expense.

What happens if there is no Power of Attorney? • The courts may appoint someone to manage your financial affairs, without your consent. • Your friends or family may need to go to court to get authority to act on your behalf – this can be a lengthy, costly & upsetting experience. • Doctors could rule loved ones on decisions you have already made regarding health matters. • By setting up a Power of Attorney now, you make things easier for your loved ones in the future, whilst keeping control of your affairs now.

Why should you use Roc & Co? • We prepare thousands of Powers of Attorney each year in the UK, and make it easier for you. • We will prepare your Power of Attorney and we can also register them. • Over 50% of clients are referred and go on to use us for other services. • We will come to you and explain in simple and understandable terms about Lasting Power of Attorneys.
