Looking for Neil...

Does anyone know Neil Thompson?

Mark Walmsley is trying to get in touch with Neil Thompson who lived near the Duck & Drake Pub. Mark has emailed the Yaxley Gazette as he is now living in France and would like help in finding his old friend. Mark lived in Yaxley from 1958-1971and has many happy memories of Neil. Holme WI At our December meeting, Lisa, from Yaxley Keepsakes came and gave us a wonderful demonstration of flower arrangements for Christmas. She also gave us a fantastic talk on the flowers that she was using. All of the green foliage came from local sources and didn’t cost anything! What a good idea for Christmas.

We will not be meetings in January as we will be holding our annual meal at the Admiral Wells, but we will meet at Holme village hall on Thursday 4 February at 7.30pm, when Mick Birchall will be speaking on his 73 days rowing across the Atlantic, at times in 20ft waves.

Come along and hear the fishy adventure, all welcome.

Holme Parish Council Holme Parish Council met on 17 November.

Cllr Tim Alban attended and reported on his work at Huntingdon District Council.

Speeding. The new 30mph speed limit through Holme is now in force.

The traffic is already moving more slowly – under 40mph is normal (still well over 30!) but there are still a few drivers who go along at over 50mph. Speedwatch activity is designed to draw attention to the new limit and new kit is to be ordered with funds from a Lottery grant and from the 'Life on the Holme Front' committee. This should enable more frequent checks. More volunteers are sought.

Budget: The Council set its budget for the year on Tuesday 17 November. The Precept is set at £14000 for 2016-17. Out of this the Parish Council pays for the grass and verge cutting, tree work, the cemetery, the closed churchyard, insurance, council administration and this year has also contributed towards the speed limit reduction project.

Dog Fouling is a huge problem around the village and in the field behind the church. Please pick up your dog’s poo and don’t leave it behind for others to tread in. If it’s dark you still have to pick it up.

Holme Fen Nature Reserve. Dogs off leads are disturbing the wildlife and the area nearest to the road is excessively polluted. Dog Poo bins have been suggested to Natural England but not yet provided. In the meantime at least can you 'kick and flick' the waste away from the paths if you can’t or won’t pick it up and take it home.

Gritting. Volunteer gritting staff are sought to clear paths and car parks etc. Please contact the clerk if interested.

Yaxley Parish Council wishes everyone a prosperous and healthy new year.

Yaxley Parish Council Clearance work by Yaxley Countryside Trust and Yaxley Parish Council This has commenced along Blenheim Way. The work is to clear the undergrowth while protecting the trees and promoting wildlife and is being completed under the guidance of Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC).

However, a number of trees have been cut back by people not understanding how this is done to promote safe growth. A number of trees in Yaxley are protected and cutting these without authority from HDC may result in legal action.

The team are keen to have additional volunteers to help with this work. If you are able to help or are interested in hedge laying etc., email Reg: reg.bingham@gmail.com or call: 01733 241627.

Dog mess If you recall, Fourfields pupils felt so

strongly about dog fouling in the village that they staged a competition to design a poster to be placed on the village noticeboards.

The winning entry was by Eleanor Bryne in Hawks Class, Year 6. Well done Eleanor.

With this is mind and following the improvement to the Wykes footpath, a new waste bin is to be sited on West End at the start of this footway, to assist dog owners with the disposal of poo bags. Thanks to Mr Watt and his team for starting this footpath improvement program.

Also, we must remind people that concern is being raised about owners letting dogs off the lead in both Queens Park and Middletons Recreation Ground to mess in areas where children regularly play. This is a health and safety issue for users and staff.

Offenders' details will be passed to HDC Dog Warden for appropriate action.

Allotments Allotment rents are due in January and spare plots may be available, anyone looking for the satisfaction of growing their own produce please contact the clerk.

MUGA Following discussions with younger members of the community, work involving new wiring to the MUGA pitch light is to be carried out to make them safe and independent of the 3G pitch wiring.

Fly Tipping This is on the increase in certain areas in the village. Should you see any rubbish as a result of fly tipping on public highway please report this either to the clerk’s oďŹƒce or directly to HDC on 01480 388388. Huntingdonshire District Council will not only clear away but are also looking to prosecute offenders.

Holme Youth Club After restarting in September we have seen our membership increase every week, so will definitely be carrying on into the new year.

Our final meeting for 2015 was on 11 December and we restart on 8 January so if you live in Holme, attend or have attended Holme Primary School, come along and have some fun from 6.308.30 pm on term time Fridays. On 15 January we are having an 'away day' with a visit to Activity World. We hope to arrange other activities and visits throughout the year.

Hat Club The HAT club met on 9 December at the Village Hall and Mrs Allen, headmistress and Mr Batty brought classes 5 and 6 from Holme C of E School to entertain us with songs and carols. This was much appreciated by the members and also by some of the grandparents. After refreshments, the children helped to pull crackers and distribute raffle prizes. A small gift was given to each child. The members then enjoyed a Christmas afternoon tea and a good chat!

The beautiful original watercolour of an owl, painted and donated by Chris Freame’s husband will be auctioned at the next meeting which is on Wednesday 13 January at the village hall at 2.30pm. The speaker is Stephen Perry - ‘Peterborough in the '60s’.

If you have any spare time the HAT club would like more helpers and also urgently needs more members; please bring a friend and have fun, a chat and a delicious afternoon tea!

Bowls Club

With winter upon us, one might think there is little happening bowls wise in Yaxley. How wrong could you be! Many of our stalwart bowlers move inside, playing at either Peterborough & District, or at Whittlesey indoor bowls clubs.

One competition, which takes in both indoor and outdoor bowls, is the Cecil Bradshaw cup, this year Yaxley beat Whittlesey.

Then, of course, there is the green to think about for next year. This year, at considerable expense, we had professional help at the end of our season, bedding down the green for the winter. But there are still those never ending tasks; pruning, leaf clearing, fences to mend etc. Our groundsman, Norman Hill, does a wonderful job, but always welcomes a helping hand.

Throughout the winter, members keep in touch through the activities of our fund-raising committee who put on Race Nights, Quizzes, Beetle Drives and a Xmas party etc.

The next activity is a Whist Drive on 16 Jan, starting at 7pm in the Bowls Club pavilion. All welcome.

A big 'thank you' to Tony Casbon At this year’s AGM, after many years our press officer, Tony Casbon, (pictured) decided to call it a day and has left his quill to go dry. We all thank him for his contribution to our club, his way with words and insightful humour, will I’m sure be missed by the readers of the Gazette.

Dementia Resource Centre Open Day Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Resource Centre for Peterborough is opening its doors on Saturday 16 January 2016 to give free advice to anyone with questions about dementia.

S

taff will be on hand from 10am – 1pm to offer information, support and advice. The Alzheimer’s Society team are particularly keen to welcome carers who are unable to access our services during normal office hours; anyone who would like to know more about dementia and would like to find out about the services provided at the Dementia Resource Centre.

Kevin Bowyer, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for Peterborough, said: “We really hope that people can come along to our Open Day to find out about the services we provide for people affected

by dementia. Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community yet far too many people with the condition are left feeling isolated and lonely and unable to access vital services. This Saturday opening could be a chance for people who are usually at work to access and seek information on services available to them.”

The Dementia Resource Centre is a one-stop service for advice, information and support, ensuring people living with dementia and their carers in Peterborough are able to get the help they need in everyday life.

Poorly children were given a welldeserved boost at Christmas thanks to generous donations by scores of cyclists.

Riders raise hundreds for children’s charity

ore than 80 cyclists rode from the Sunny Café, in Yaxley, to Peterborough City Hospital, for the inaugural Teddy Bear Ride.

Dozens of teddy bears, bubbles and stickers were handed over to staff and children at the Amazon Ward on Sunday, December 6.

A collection on the day also raised more than £400, which will be used to fund a party for the children on the ward.The event has proven to be so successful that it will continue to take place every year.

Although organised by Yaxley Riders’ rider of the year for 2015, Wayne Langley, who also

runs PACE (Peterborough All Terrain Cycling Enthusiasts), the ride featured cyclists from clubs all over Peterborough and beyond, including Spalding Spinners, Fenland Clarion, Black Bears (from Wisbech) and the Gorilla Firm.

Zoe Wilkinson, the play team coordinator at the hospital, said: "Our patients and staff were thrilled to see such an amazing turn out, especially in the windy conditions. Their donations will make a real difference and help us settle children on the ward. We are very grateful to all who took part in this lovely donation.”

Praise for this novel, first published at the beginning of 2015, has spread like wildfire and it has become THE book to read. So just in case you are one of the few that hasn’t succumbed to this thriller, why should you pick it up?

Whether you are a regular commuter, like the central character Rachel, or not, you will easily be able to identify with the opening section. How many times have you sat on a train and looked out of the window into the garden or kitchen windows of the houses that back onto the tracks, as you speed past on your way to your final destination. As you catch glimpses into a life that you don’t know, do you wonder about the people that occupy those houses?

Rachel doesn’t have to wonder. She passes familiar houses every day and purposefully looks for Jess and Jason, a young professional couple who live a perfect life. She knows them and is in many ways envious of their relationship. Seeing them in their garden is a moment of comfort as her own life is falling apart.

But is all as it seems? On one day, as the train slows down at a signal by the house, Rachel notices that something is amiss. Suddenly she is sucked into a nightmare that seems destined to reveal everything, and that will shock you as her commuter journey turns out to be anything but normal. It’s a small world, but when that world comes crashing down around you, it becomes all too clear that this small world is a lot smaller than you first thought.

by Jenny Nimmo It is now nearly a decade since the last Harry Potter book was published, and AGE 8+ a new generation are quite rightly discovering this wonderful world of wizards and magic. Just like the generation before them, they are left with a void after reading them all, and so where do they turn? The Charlie Bone series of books may well be just what they are looking for. Published in 2002, Midnight for Charlie Bone is the first of this eight book series.

Charlie is a fairly normal 10 year old boy. His father died when he was little, and he lives with his mum and two grandmas, and hangs out with his best friend Ben. One Friday Charlie hears voices coming from a photograph, and then his whole life changes. He learns that his three unmarried great-aunts, known as the Yewbeams, are going to fund his education and a private school called Bloor’s Academy. Charlie is not happy about this: he knows the school to be a stuffy place for geniuses, and he certainly won’t fit in there. But the Yewbeams are insistent: and besides, they pay for his mum’s living expenses and so he really has no choice. They explain to Charlie that he is ‘endowed’ and can read the minds of people in photographs.

Everyone at Bloor’s Academy has a talent. Charlie’s father went there and he was a musician. But what is Charlie’s talent? Placed in the music department at Bloor’s, despite having no musical talent, it becomes clear that there is another group of children at the school who are all endowed with some mystical magical talent. Soon he finds that he was born into a world he never knew existed.

Tax Returns 2015

With the deadline for completing and submitting self-assessment tax returns online is 31 January 2016, many of you may be struggling to get the job done.

We have put together a list of helpful tips and advice to help make the task more bearable.

Do I need to complete a tax return?

Self-assessment is not just for self-employed people. If you fall under one of the following categories, you will need to complete a tax return too: ■ You are self-employed ■ You are a company director ■ Your annual income is £100,000 or more ■ You have income from letting any property or land you own ■ You receive other untaxed income, or significant capital gains, and the tax due on it cannot be collected through a PAYE tax code ■ You need to claim expenses or reliefs ■ You or your partner receive Child Benefit and your income is over £50,000 There are also other reasons, such as being a minister of religion, in receipt of trust or settlement income, have taxable foreign income or you are a trustee.

When should I start the application process?

Now! You can only apply online if you have already registered. If you haven’t done this yet, you should do it now. It can take up to seven working days for HMRC to send you an activation code by post. The deadline to submit your tax return is the 31 January, so you need to start the application as soon as possible.

Am I better off completing my tax return online?

Besides the fact you have missed the paper deadline, there are a number of benefits to completing your return online, such as automatic tax calculation and faster tax refund if you are due one, a submission reference and not having to rely on snail mail.

I am a parent collecting Child Benefit. Why do I need to complete a form?

Those who earn more than £50,000 a year and collect Child Benefit will have to complete a self-assessment return.

Serves: 4-6 Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Ingredients 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 shallots, diced 4 cloves of garlic, chopped 3 carrots, diced ½ teaspoon turmeric powder ½ teaspoon cinnamon 2 beetroot (yellow ideally), peeled and diced 6 cups vegetable broth/stock 1¼ cups of red lentils 1 teaspoon of sea salt, plus more to taste ¼ teaspoon of pepper, plus more to taste 1 yellow onion, thinly sliced 10 cardamom pods or 1½ teaspoons ground cardamom ½ teaspoon coriander powder

Method  Heat a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. When it dances, add the shallots, garlic, carrots, turmeric and cinnamon. Cook until the shallots soften and the mixture becomes aromatic, about 3-5 minutes.  Add the beetroot and vegetable broth and bring the mixture to a boil. Add the lentils and reduce the heat to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper and continue cooking at a simmer for 15-25 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the vegetables are tender.  Prepare the caramelised onions while the soup cooks. If using cardamom pods, crush them (the bottom of a pan works nicely) and remove the seeds. Grind the seeds into a powder with a mortar and pestle.  Heat a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and heat until the oil dances. Add the onion, cardamom and coriander. Keep the heat high so the onions begin to brown, stirring continuously. If the onions start sticking to the sides of the pan, add a little water. Continue cooking for 10 minutes, or until the onions are caramelised and golden brown. Reduce the heat if necessary to keep them from burning.

Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.  Fill bowls with soup and top with a tablespoon of onions and serve, or simply stir the onions into the soup.

The Soup Cleanse – Angela Blatteis and Vivienne Vella It’s that time of year when many of us feel a bit bloated and start to wish we maybe hadn’t eaten quite so many mince pies. The effects of a few too many glasses of wine and selection boxes, are all too apparent in our hair, skin and energy levels.

Detoxes can be a great way to get back on track, but most aren’t exactly pleasurable.

Who wants to sip cold juices, or nibble on some lettuce when it’s so bloomin’ cold out? The Soup Cleanse is a great alternative. Choose from a range of detox programmes, starting at a one-day mini-cleanse, and lots of very tempting recipes, from Red Lentil and Caramelised Onion Soup to Pumpkin Miso Soup.

Soups are a great way to get a real hit of veggies, providing lots of vitamins, minerals, fibre and protein, with no added ‘junk’. They’re usually low-calorie, so can help with weight loss, as well as helping you to detox and boost your energy.

While the book focuses on soups, it does include other healthy meals, snacks and drinks. Baked Wild Salmon with Avocado, Ginger and Mango Salsa anyone?

Unlike many health books, The Soup Cleanse is easy to read, and enjoyable.

The Usbourne Healthy Cookbook - Fiona Patchett Trying to get children to eat healthily can be stressful, to say the least. It can feel that the healthier a meal is, and the longer it takes to prepare it, the less chance there is that the kids will eat it. One way to tempt them is to get them involved with the cooking. Kids are far likelier to eat something if they’ve had a hand in making it.

There are a few healthy kids’ cookbooks on the market, but one of the best has to be the Usbourne Healthy Cookbook.

Recipes are easy to follow, with clear step-by-step instructions and plenty of photos and illustrations. They’re not too complicated either; some can be completed by a child on their own, while others require a bit of help from adults. There are plenty of main dishes, along with desserts and drinks. Some recipes tempt kids with food they’ve likely tried, such as fruit salad or chicken fajitas, while others may encourage them to be a bit more adventurous.

Children are taught about nutrition, portion size and the importance of a varied diet as they learn to cook. A bonus is that the book is spiral-bound, so lies flat, making it much easier to keep in place when they’re cooking.

With any luck, it’ll inspire them so much that they’ll be cooking for you regularly, while you relax in front of the TV with a glass of wine. (We can but hope, can’t we?)

Safety Alarms

Don't let 2016 go up in smoke

Around 140 house fires occur every day in the United Kingdom, resulting in nearly 500 deaths and over 11,000 injuries each year.

Many of these could be prevented with an early warning system in place - such as a smoke alarm. They can detect fire in its early stages and give you a few extra precious minutes to make a safe escape.

There are four types: Ionisation alarms are the cheapest and are very sensitive to small particles of smoke from fast flaming fires (like paper or wood), but they can be over sensitive near kitchens. They are best fitted on landings.

Optical alarms are more effective at detecting large particles of smoke from slow burning fires, such as from foam-filled upholstery and PVC wiring. They are ideal for bedrooms, living rooms and the hall.

Heat alarms are insensitive to smoke, but detect an increase in temperature. They only cover a relatively small area, so you may need several in a large room. They are a good choice for a kitchen or garage.

Combined alarms include an optical and heat alarm which will reduce the occurrence of false alarms and increase the speed of detection.

They should be fitted on landings and in bedrooms, living rooms and halls.

Some alarms are interlinked, which means that smoke detected in one room can raise an alarm call elsewhere in the house. Some have a light that comes on when the alarm sounds, which can help you find your way out and also alert people with hearing problems.

As a minimum you should fit one alarm on each floor, but the more you have fitted, the more protected you are. Remember – you are twice as likely to die in a house fire where no alarm is fitted.

Smoke alarms do not detect the presence of carbon monoxide (CO), which is a colourless, odourless, tasteless – but highly poisonous – gas, produced when carbon-based fuels like gas, oil, wood and coal do not burn completely. Around fifty people die each year from CO poisoning.

A CO detector should be fitted in every room containing a fuel burning appliance such as a boiler, cooker or fire. Costing between £15 and £35, a detector should have an audible alarm – not just a colour change or back spot indicator – to wake you when you are asleep and at your most vulnerable.

Please ensure that your alarm complies with British Standard EN50291 and that it gives a warning when it reaches the end of its useful life.

In addition to fitting a CO alarm, also make certain you have your gas appliances and flues serviced regularly by a Gas Safe Registered engineer.

Prevention is always better than cure!

Lattersey Nature Reserve T

he Wildlife Trust nature reserve at Lattersey used to be a quarry for brick clay and 'borrow' material used to build the local railway.

As the surrounding fenland was drained and ploughed, once the pits were abandoned they filled with water, creating a haven for wildlife.

The wetland is important for a variety of wildlife including water voles, water shrews and insects, especially dragonflies and damselflies, rare

beetles and moths, and can be explored via a boardwalk. Sedges, rushes and other wetland plants abound, while twayblade and bee orchid are found on the drier grassland areas. Dense scrub also provides food and shelter for birds such as woodcock, sparrowhawk and tawny owl.

In October 2015 a volunteer on a Trust work party saw a speckled bush-cricket: vivid

green with a covering of tiny black speckles and an orange-brown stripe down the back this was a rare sighting. These crickets likes rough vegetation, scrub and hedgerows, and are more commonly found in south east England, sometimes seen perching on bushes, flowers and leaves, particularly bramble. Speckled bush-crickets emerge as nymphs in May and moult into adult form during later summer.

St Peter’s Church I wonder what this time of year makes you think about? For some of us the transition from one year to the next might bring a sense of excitement with thoughts of new beginnings where for others fear or anxiety about what lies ahead make this a particularly hard time. The dawn of a new year might provide a time to take stock, to reflect on hopes and dreams for the coming twelve months, or it may be simply a time to make the same resolutions that were made twelve months ago, as we convince ourselves that this time will be different and those promises will be kept past 2 January.

As I considered this new year I remembered something a sixth form student said to me a few years ago when I was a youth worker. I was leading a Christian Union group at a local school and I asked a simple question to get a discussion going: ‘Why do you get up in the morning’? Initially I got the expected responses of ‘my mum’, or ‘the alarm clock’, but then one young person looked up and said something I found very inspiring: ‘I get up in the morning because of the thought that something might happen’.

The dawning of a new year is a reminder that life is never static but is a series of beginnings

Happy New Year! and endings. It is a journey, a place of possibility as every day brings the potential that something might happen as we are continually presented with new experiences and adventures and the inevitable joys and challenges that come with them.

The Christmas story is a timely reminder that God meets us on our journeys. That in the birth of Jesus, we find a God who is not some distant figure with a long white beard sitting on a cloud surrounded by harp playing angels. Rather, this is a God who walks alongside us, sharing in the mundane and the incredible, the joyful and the challenging aspects of our lives. As one Bible translation wonderfully puts it, in Jesus God ‘became flesh and blood and moved into the neighbourhood’.

I don’t know what 2016 will hold but my prayer is that we can enter this new year with an air of expectancy and hope for what ‘might happen’. We may not know where the road will take us, what we will discover, who we will meet or what obstacles and opportunities we will encounter on the way but we can face whatever life throws at us over the next 365 days living in the assurance that God is with us in all we do.

Stretton PreSchool Our Christmas Fete, held at the end of November, was exceptionally well attended and successful, raising over £1000 for resources for the pre-school.

The children gave a wonderful performance of songs, enjoyed making Christmas decorations and reindeer food and meeting Father Christmas in his grotto. Father Christmas left some replies to letters he had received from the children on the Christmas tree and it was lovely to see how excited they were to find their letter. There was also a raffle with excellent prizes donated by extremely generous local companies, parents and friends of the pre-school, who we are very grateful to.

The children have been lucky to get some more exciting visitors. Thank you to Philip Hall Plant and Keyline for bringing along a digger and a lorry for the children at Main Street to look at and sit in - they all had a wonderful time. Thank you also to Georgina Symmonds from Farcet Salvation Army for coming into Fourfields to help the children celebrate Christingles.

Sawtry Village Academy

Stanground Academy

This month, Head Boy Aaron Parak and Head Girl Hollie Johnson tell us about the latest developments at the Academy – over to them!

In the autumn term, we conducted some great charitable events at Sawtry Village Academy. Our House Captains organised a non-uniform day for Children in Need based on a theme of ‘inside out’ or emotions. We could either wear our own clothes inside out or choose a colour that promoted an emotion. We raised almost £1,000 – an amazing amount of money for a good cause!

Ahead of Christmas, we also assembled almost 60 shoeboxes for the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child appeal. Students from Archers House led the collection for the gifts and on collection, we were told that the boxes were bound for children in Iraq. Everyone involved is pleased to have been able to make a difference to another child’s Christmas this year.

Our younger students also had an exciting visit from BAE Systems and the RAF when they brought their STEM Roadshow to the Academy. Our Year 7 and 8s were given insight into how the study of science can link to a variety of careers in the future – with an inspiring showcase of some crazy experiments!

The Stanground Academy took part in this year's Young Chef Competition run by Rotary Great Britain & Ireland. The organisation is run predominately by volunteers, offering young people the chance to develop personal skills and create a better awareness of the problems that face the world today. The competition was held at Nene Park Academy on Thursday 26 November 2015 and had a number of entrants from schools across the city of Peterborough. The quality of the food produced was of a very high standard and the competition was very tight but student Sophie Styles-Hudson in year 9 won the competition with her homemade Pancetta Tagliatelle and Black Forest Gateau Trifle. She will now go through to the regional final at Hinchingbrooke School in Huntingdon in January 2016.

LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICNE Global Belly Laugh Day takes place on 24 January.

Its aim is to celebrate the gift of laughter.

By Susan Brookes-Morris Whilst there are many different languages spoken throughout the world, laughter can be said to be a universal language. It also has no boundaries: it happens somewhere 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and across all continents.

The day was created by LaughterYoga Teacher Elaine Helle in 2005.

She says it’s a chance to celebrate with the people in your life past and present, who laugh with you and help you laugh and smile... and also to remember the strange, funny, ‘now I can laugh at it’ moments.

One of the main features of the day is the Belly Laugh, Bounce Around The World. All are encouraged to smile, throw their arms in the air and laugh out loud at 1:24pm local time so as to literally send laughter around the world.

Laughing is of course mostly about having fun, but there are health benefits too. Research shows that a good laugh can: lower blood

pressure, boost our immune system, reduce some stress hormones, increase vascular blood flow and oxygenation of the blood, provide a work out for the diaphragm, abdomen, respiratory system, legs, face and back and increase alertness, creativity, memory, learning and our positive emotions. Even so-called fake laughter can bring these health benefits and this is the principle on which laughter yoga relies. Plus of course many of us find that laughter is infectious and laughter yoga usually takes place in groups to make the most of this.

The Global Belly Laugh Day symbol consists of a smiling sun with 7 rays and 1 and 24 dimples.

So on Global Belly Laugh Day and every space day ‘have a laugh.’ If you are struggling to find inspiration, why not look through some old photos, watch a funny film or wear some crazy clothes - laugh and the world laughs with you, and its free!

The laughing oath was written by Diana Loomans and Karen Kolberg, it reads: I do solemnly swear from this day forward, to grease my giggling gears each day and to wear a grin on my face for no reason at all!I promise to tap my funny bone often, with children, family, friends, colleagues and clients, and to laugh at least fifteen times per day. I believe that frequent belly laughter cures terminal tightness, cerebral stiffness, and hardening of the attitudes, and that HA HA often leads to AHA! Antifreeze poisoning dang

As 2015 retires to the sweet embrace of history and the New Year thrusts its big face into being, our thoughts must turn to ambitions for the coming twelve months.

I

went with a nice easy resolution last year; I decided that I was going to read more and so I have thrashed my Kindle to within an inch of its life with journeys through the Millennium trilogy, the hungry games, a song of ice and fire and of course spot finds a big red ball. This year though I can’t be bothered. Everyone accepts that New Year’s resolutions are not to be kept, so if you’re going to lie to yourself you really ought to go all out and make it sound interesting; this year my resolution is going to be to take up base jumping.

Moving on to matters more exciting, I have been thinking about what the coolest thing that could be done around Yaxley to mark 2016’s place in village lore. Having ruled out an eighty foot high statue of this year’s X Factor winner, opening a satellite branch of London Zoo on the Rec and Vegas style casino in the shopping centre, I think I finally have the answer.

The moment that will put Yaxley on the map, the event that will stand tall in the memory of all who came and saw and beheld at its magnificence – for one day, we shut the village and turn it into a gigantic go kart track.

Everyone over the age of 18 who lives in the village gets a one lap invite, and at the end of the day the top ten fastest times face it out for a five lap winner takes all race; the winner getting a car or something equally cool. What’s more, we could ask the Formula One teams based in Milton Keynes to come up for the day and run a car or two round our track; there’s loads of them one of them is bound to be free for the day. Local businesses and economy are stimulated by extra visitors, community spirit kicks takes a big boost, and Yaxley is famous for the day; as you can see there are literally no downsides to my plan.

Like I said, if you’re going to lie to yourself about what you’re going to achieve over the coming year you may as well try and get creative and come up with something interesting.

A

ntifreeze contains a chemical called ethylene glycol which is extremely toxic to our pets and cats appear to be most prone to exposure. Ethylene glycol is broken down by the liver, a process which produces chemicals that severely damage the kidneys. The damage is often so severe that the animal cannot survive. For cats, it only takes a small amount of antifreeze to be ingested for it to cause illness and even death – a teaspoon or less.

So how and why do cats drink antifreeze?

Antifreeze does have a sweet taste, which is said to attract dogs and children. However, cats do not taste ‘sweetness’ in the same way, nonetheless antifreeze still appears to be attractive for some reason. Cats can be poisoned from a curious lick from a bottle or a spillage, from taking a drink from a garden feature or cleaning their own paws after walking through an antifreeze contaminated puddle.

Symptoms Cats will not necessarily shows signs

Antifreeze is an extremely serious poison and unfortunately often fatal.

of poisoning straight away but within an hour they may appear ‘drunk’ (wobbly walk), be weak and tired and possibly vomit. They may also have seizures and/or collapse.

Treatment Prompt veterinary attention is essential. If the cat is treated within an hour of ingestion they are given a drug which makes them vomit up any antifreeze from the stomach, thus stopping it being absorbed and causing damage. If the cat reaches the Vet within a few hours, an antidote can be given – typically ethanol (alcohol). It may sound strange but the ethanol stops the ethylene glycol being broken down by the cat’s body into the more toxic forms which causes the kidney damage. (Please do not give alcohol at home, please seek veterinary attention). Unfortunately if kidney damage has already been caused the treatment will not work and the damage is irreparable.

Prognosis Antifreeze is an extremely serious poison and unfortunately often fatal.

Survival is most likely if the cat is treated with 3-4 hours of ingestion – before the ethylene glycol has been absorbed into the cat’s body.

Protecting your cat (and others) ␣ The main consideration is to minimise the risk of exposure: ␣ Bottle and store any antifreeze products securely ␣ Clear up and thoroughly wash down any spillages with water ␣ Never add antifreeze to garden water features Our other recommendation is get to know to know your cat!

Being familiar with what is normal health and behaviour will help you spot when something is wrong.

For example if come home and are unusually quiet, sick or acting differently. This ability is not only useful for spotting a poisoning!

Be aware: a complication of antifreeze poisoning is that the exposure is not often witnessed which means knowing your cat’s ‘norm’ is invaluable and seeking immediate veterinary attention is vital.

I'm a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it's January and time for a spot of gardening selfimprovement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions.  I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can't stick a pin between the dandelions.

Let's face it gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span.  I will not leave seed sowing until it's too late!

This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them.  I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes.

Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are already in less than ideal conditions and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease.

Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy.

 I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening.

This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time. . I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won't have the time I'll invest in an irrigation system.  I will start another compost bin. it's not difficult and will help the environment as I'll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot.  I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties.

Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning.

Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy.

Big Garden Birdwatch

he Big Garden Birdwatch has taken place every year since, with over half a million people – adults as well as children - regularly taking part.

Yaxley FC Yaxley have endured a tough few weeks in the league with points dropped and as a result now find themselves in mid table. The derby on Boxing Day at home to Peterborough Northern Star is now critical in the way the season will pan out.

Pilates If you've overindulged during the festive period then you're certainly not alone. By making Pilates your new year's resolution you're one step closer to better health and fitness in 2016.

icky Leschallas, of Pilates with Vicky, could be the person to help you take that step, at classes she runs in the south of Peterborough, including Yaxley.

Vicky is a level 3 qualified pilates teacher with a real interest in back care pilates. She will soon be qualified as a pre and post natal instructor.

Pilates is for all ages and abilities. It will strengthen and tone your body, improving posture, flexibility and wellbeing. By strengthening your core muscles, it allows better support for your spine, helping to alleviate common causes of lower back pain.

Pilates helps to realign the body, correcting posture-related problems.

Pilates is especially good for those who need rehabilitation, have suffered injury, are pregnant, or have just had a a baby. In fact, the exercises are perfect for improving your body whatever your needs. Many top athletes, dancers and sport enthusiasts incorporate Pilates into their training as it

promotes a wealth of benefits associated with muscle care, flexibility and strength.

Pilates is suitable for beginners through to the more experienced and all exercises are layered to allow you to work at your own level.

Vicky holds classes at St B's Hall in Yaxley on Tuesdays at 6.15pm and 7.30pm. Golden Pilates, for the more mature client, takes place at Stilton Memorial Hall on Monday mornings.

A new class, for women only, starts on 7 January at Gladstone Park Community Centre in Peterborough, 9.30 -10.30am.

Classes cost £7 or there's the option to purchase a five class block for £31 or a ten class block for £57.

Vicky also offers one to one sessions at home; great for those who would prefer a one-to-one before joining a class.

Acupuncture Treatments

Acupuncture is one of the many therapies of Chinese medicine and is used for a wide range of health conditions.

H

air fine needles are inserted into certain locations to stimulate the body's healing energy or 'Qi'. Once mysterious and misunderstood, today acupuncture is fast becoming recognised as a safe and reliable method of treatment for many conditions – millions of people worldwide have benefited.

What conditions may acupuncture treat?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has produced a list of disease categories for which Traditional Chinese Acupuncture may benefit, for example: sinusitis, migraine, nausea, indigestion, constipation, IBS, high blood pressure, neck-shoulder / back / knee pain, arthritis (both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis), muscle strains and sprains and other soft tissue injuries, PMS, irregular or painful periods, menopausal syndrome, fluid retention, skin disorders, insomnia, infertility, stroke recovery. In addition acupuncture is used for addictions to smoking or alcohol, and is used for facial rejuvenation.

What happens when I come for a treatment?

Your practitioner will first gather information from you about your health. The treatment itself usually involves the insertion of 6-20 fine, sterile, stainless steel needles and their retention for 30 mins. Other therapeutic techniques such as massage and cupping (creating a suction) may also be used if beneficial for your condition. Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises may also be recommended if appropriate, for example in the treatment of low back pain.

How can we protect ourselves against fraud?

By Louise Addison hese days we are required to use so many PINS and passwords that many people choose something simple to remember, such as their child’s name or date of birth. Fraudsters know this and in their hands such information becomes a valuable tool. But how do they get hold of such information?

Careless talk How many of us publish personal details on Facebook and other networking sites? We announce our favourite books, films; the names of our children and our pets for all to see.

Can you keep a secret? In a research study carried out for the Infosecurity Europe trade show, four out of five subjects questioned happily handed over the user name and password for their work PC to those carrying out the research. More surprising, were many of those who would not initially reveal their passwords did so after being bribed with chocolate!

Gone Phishing NEVER click on links in unsolicited emails purporting to be from your bank or building society. If in doubt phone them first.

Proper Passwords The best passwords are a completely random mix of characters and letters. Fraudsters have a hard time guessing them, even when they use dedicated software.

Security experts suggest that we use a separate password for each account we possess. But given that most of us have trouble remembering two or three passwords, you can see the problem with this approach.

Fortunately, there are password managers available for under £30 which remember your various passwords and PINS but encrypt them to make them useless to anyone else. If you want the very latest in security technology, you can purchase a fingerprint reader for around £100 or an iris scanner for under £300.

Most importantly, make sure you keep your PCs security software updated. And beware people with clipboards offering chocolate!
