In this issue, we introduce an opportunity for you to spend the colder winter evenings indoors in the warm reading two fascinating new books about our local area. Firstly, we review Load, Aim, FIRE! True stories from Yaxley and its Fen, which is a new book exploring two stories that have been passed down through the generations. There is also another enthralling new read about the Great Fen, exploring how this Cambridgeshire fenland has evolved through population growth, war, drainage and cultivation to the landscape of today. The Great Fen: A Journey Through Time, by Alan Bowley traces stories of people and wildlife and shows how we can learn from the past and asks what future do we want for ourselves and the non-human world. Hundreds of residents have shared their favourite places and moments in Peterborough as part of a citywide, award winning campaign to positively celebrate our city. Turn to page 15 to read more. yaxleyhub On-call Firefighters Needed Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for on-call firefighters to join on-call fire stations around the county. On-call firefighters aren't based at a fire station, instead they carry a pager and respond to emergency incidents as and when they happen The Service has introduced a new daytime contract to the on-call service, which allows people to be available to respond to emergencies from just 24 hours a week, for example while working at their regular day job or from home. The new contract is available for anyone interested in joining an on-call station, providing they can offer a minimum of 24 hours per week (between 7am and 7pm during the week) and attend the weekly drill night. On-call firefighters can be men and women that come from every walk of life. They may be at home, working for themselves or a nearby company, or even out in their local community. They must maintain their availability to respond to emergencies by staying within five minutes travel time of the fire station. They receive an annual wage plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights. Community Car Scheme The local community car scheme recently held a fundraising coffee morning at Queen's Park Pavilion attended by nearly 70 local residents from Yaxley & Farcet The event was funded by an anonymous donation from one of their own passengers. Free to attend, they enjoyed hot drinks and snacks plus all manner of cakes, pastries and savouries served by scheme volunteers. Entertainment was provided by the 8 piece Peterborough Ukulele Group. There was also a raffle and book stall. Councillors from Huntingdon and Yaxley were also in attendance. Both councils together with Cambridgeshire County Council provide some support to the group. The car scheme takes passengers who have difficulty using public transport. Usually this is to and from hospitals, doctors, care homes,
social events, shopping, hairdressers and other appropriate journeys. Destinations covered include Stamford, Peterborough, Huntingdon and Cambridge and further afield if appropriate. Passengers would often be taken to their relevant clinic and not just the main hospital entrance or car park and wait with them before returning. People that require wheelchairs and those that may have other mobility or health related issues can usually be accommodated. The subsidised cost to the passenger is only 30p per mile with a £3.00 min charge. Registration is free.
The scheme is run entirely by volunteers. With nearly 300 registered passengers and 18 drivers they urgently need more volunteer drivers to keep up with current and future demand. Hours can be arranged to suit from just a few hours a week. Drivers receive a tax free mileage allowance. For more details please call 07795 542084

Ray Bass Broadway Bowls Club has lost one of its most liked and respected members, Ray Bass Ray a long serving member of the club passed on January 10th he will be greatly missed by all, our thoughts are with his family and wife Hazel in there time of grief. Ray was the type of man to help everyone a bit mischievous with a sense of humour , a past president and serving on the committee Ray was the captain of numerous teams leading them to numerous trophy’s in the Peterborough league . Ray was a winner to the end reaching several finals in the 2019 season managing to secure the Ron Leeder trophy. I will miss you like many in the club good by my friend.
This leads me to the 2020 season were as President of the club would like to invite anyone interested in playing bowls competitively or just to have a bit of social company all are welcome. We run friendly games with tea and biscuits or you can enter county competitions leading to National finals, we have had success in the club in 2019 were in pairs competition when they became national champions well done. Try your hand in late April/MAY were roll ups and tuition will be available from 10am to 12am we will even find some bowls for your session all free no charge for trial sessions. For further information I have been informed our website has been updated so go on give bowls a go you don’t have to be old to enjoy bowls.

Jill has decided to retire from this position and we would like to Thank her for her dedication and commitment. Also retiring after 47 years of service to our club is Rose Cook and a huge thank you goes to her too(Rose you will be sadly missed). However the club continues with our excellent committee at the helm and we would welcome any new members to come along. Home WI A New Year Starts Our attention now turns to 2020 and the start of a new WI year. We do not hold a meeting in January, instead we meet for our annual meal at the Admiral Wells, where we have a good catch up, lots of talking and lots of eating. Our meeting year will start in February with A Village Life, and we have lots of interesting guest speakers signed up already. Our Knit and Natter group is going strong producing a great quantity of knitted items including hats for the Sailors Society, blankets for Olive Mead Care Home and baby clothes for local NHS Trusts.

Our book club is also going from strength to strength with a full membership. So, let’s look forward to 2020 and the start of another year, which hopefully will not go as quick as 2019 did. Yaxley WI In December we celebrated Christmas by having nibbles and drinks followed by entertainment. This year local singer Tammy sang a selection of easy listening songs followed by our large Christmas raffle and then more songs from Tammy. I think we all went home felling very Christmassy! At our first meeting for 2020 we were unfortunately let down by the non appearance of our speaker so it was a case of entertaining ourselves. One member had photos on her lap top of our entry in the Christmas Tree Festival at St Peters Church and
also pictures of members enjoying our December meeting and after viewing these we held a Beetle Drive. Fingers crossed for our meeting on 13 February when Stephen Perry will be telling us about the history of Peterborough during WW2. Visitors are very welcome and we are making this an open meeting so any men who may be interested can join us. As usual the meeting will be held in the upstairs room (stair lift available) at the Lancaster Club, Main St, Yaxley with the doors opening at 6.45 and the meeting starting at 7.30pm.

Women, men and children of all ages are called to 'Rise, take your mat and walk' to join this day of prayer.* Women of Zimbabwe have prepared this year's service and they encourage us all to reflect on the difficulties and unrest that have plagued their country over many years. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. They encourage us to 'Rise, take your mat and walk' with them as they continue their often turbulent journey towards full reconciliation. World Day of prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world; their hopes, concerns and prayers.
The preparation for the day is vast. An international committee is based in New York and there are national committees in each participating country. Regional conferences meet to consider the service and then local groups make their plans. Finally, at a church near you on Friday 6 March 2020, people will gather to celebrate the service prepared by the women of Zimbabwe. The day of prayer is celebrated in over 170 countries. It begins in Samoa and prayer in native languages travels throughout the world --- through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas before finishing in American Samoa some 36 hours later.

This is often a time when New Year’s resolutions are made, perhaps broken and then hopefully reinstated. It is a time when people think back and plan forward and it is a time when we look forward to spring, the shoots are already coming up as I write this and many spring flowers will no doubt be in bloom as you read this You might have decided to start a new hobby, to get fit, to give yourself some time for you or to do some study. There might be something that you have always wondered about and have decided to find out more about that subject. There are many people who want to ask questions about different areas, and I know that there are many people who want to know more about Christianity and more importantly about God and who is Jesus. In this New Year, I would love to invite you into Saint Peter’s Church to a place and space where you can ask questions that you might have about who we are, what we do and why we want to tell you about the God who loves every person including you and why we come to church and how
we want to live our lives. We will do this through an Alpha course which will start on the 10 February in Saint Peter’s Church at 7.30pm. I grew up in a Christian home but I still know how hard it can be to walk in to a church. I get this but I can assure you of a really warm welcome at Saint Peters and some good refreshments. Why not come along and see and hear for yourself. The course runs for 7 sessions – 10 Feb, 17 Feb, 24 Feb, 2 March, 9 March, 23 March and 30 March and it would be great if you can come to them all, but if you just want to come for a taster you are really welcome. If you have any queries, please do contact me or come along and see for yourself. Please bring friends and family with you – everyone is welcome and there are no silly questions.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel As part of our reaching out into the Community, in December we held our second poster competition This year pupils from William de Yaxley, Yaxley Infants and Yaxley Cubs submitted their imaginative and talented pieces of artwork. The one voted best by our friends at our Christmas coffee morning was displayed in our notice board over the Christmas season. Congratulations to our winner Amelie, who attends Yaxley Infant School, for her beautiful picture. The proceeds from our January coffee morning went to The
Night Shelter, where volunteers offer a bed, cooked meals and companionship for homeless people in Peterborough throughout the winter months. Thanks to the generosity of the folk that joined us there we raised over £120. Our popular monthly coffee morning will be on 8 February, starting at 10am. Come out of the cold and into our warm and friendly Chapel an enjoy homemade cakes and companionship.

This fascinating account by Roy Butters and Paul Middleton follows a lengthy period of rigorous research and a systematic physical survey carried out at St Peter’s church and over two fields on Yaxley Fen with the generous support of local landowners Tony and John Mears. First is the mystery of dozens of indentations in the stone of Yaxley’s spectacular church tower, which have historically been attributed to cannon fire blasted from Cromwell’s soldiers at Stilton Hill during the English Civil War. In this book ballistics expert Roy and seasoned local history writer Paul investigate the evidence behind the tale to present a compelling argument for an explanation this is far more interesting than the lore might suggest. The second subject is ‘Muskets at the Old Mill’, investigating the intriguing tale of militia soldiers from the Norman Cross Depot marching down to the fen for target practice at the old mill. The writers offer fascinating photographs
and descriptions of treasures unearthed from the Fen, which include coins, buttons, musket balls and other artefacts. The story not only untangles the history of the musket firing range but also explores the history of the old mill itself, before the age of steam when wind powered these solitary sentinels of the Fen. This book is a much welcome addition to Yaxley’s rather sparse historical bookshelf and presents important research in an attractive elegantly written format. Weighing in at 29 pages, Load, Aim, FIRE! Isn’t a long read but leaves an impact as indelible as the wounds on our church tower and to the author’s immense credit, all proceeds from the sale will be donated to Sue Ryder Hospice at Thorpe Hall. The book launch event is scheduled for 7.30pm on Wednesday 26 February 2020 at The Farmers, Broadway, Yaxley. Signed copies of the books will be on sale with the authors in attendance.

The first Sunday in February has been designated Yorkshire Pudding Day 'Dripping puddings' were made in Yorkshire as early as 1737. The recipe was published in a book called 'The Whole Duty of a Woman' which declared you should use a '...good batter as for pancakes, put in a hot toss pan over the fire, add a bit of butter to fry the bottom a little, then put the pan instead of a dripping pan and under a shoulder of mutton, shake it frequently and it will be light and savoury. When the mutton is done, turn it in a dish and serve hot.' Ten years later the recipe appeared again in a book by Hannah Glasse, the Prue Leith of her day. The puddings took a while to evolve from flatter, spongier offerings of the time, to the light crispy specimens we know

The Royal Society of Chemistry once declared that “A Yorkshire pudding isn’t a Yorkshire pudding if it is less than four inches tall.” Yorkshire Puddings are a staple of the British Sunday lunch (though my kids happily eat them midweek too). Mostly they are served as part of the trimmings, but in some parts of Yorkshire they are eaten as a separate course prior to the main meat dish. Originally this was for reasons of frugality; the puddings were served with dripping and gravy as a way of filling the diners with less expensive ingredients and thus making the more expensive meat go further. However you eat yours, Happy Yorkshire Pudding Day.

Folksworth Preschool We have enjoyed celebrating Chinese New Year by exploring with chop sticks, getting messy with rice and noodles and also trying Chinese food
Folksworth Preschool The new term is well underway and our children are busy learning how to keep themselves healthy in mind, body and soul The children are learning yoga with our own qualified yogini teacher. Each session starts with the words kind heart, kind words and kind thoughts. The session follows the same pattern each time to encourage confidence though familiarity. The gentle warm up is followed by different postures such as the tree for balance or the cat for flexibility. They then flow into the relaxation to aid mindfulness and the session closes with the ringing of the Tibetan chimes. The whole group comes together to take some time to recharge and to connect.
The children have enjoyed taking part in craft activities, making Chinese lanterns and Chinese dragons. The preschool children have enjoyed learning letter sounds in the alphabet and also recognising numbers. They have been exploring the environment around them to recognise numbers and letters. The preschool children are looking forward to their families joining them for lunch at the nursery soon. We are currently taking bookings for September 2020 and also into 2021! We have excellent teaching across the school with children making strong progress from their starting points. Our recent KS2 SATs outcomes for Yr 6, including 100% for reading, place our school as the second highest performing primary school in Cambridgeshire. This means that our children leave primary school well equipped for their secondary education. We provide a rich, varied curriculum where the creative arts and sport are valued. On our January INSET day the teachers and teaching assistants spent the day considering how our learning environment supports good mental health for children and adults. Together, we have reviewed our quality provision. Last week was wellbeing week and the children took part in a range of different activities. Across the week– they worked with different members of staff to experience: yoga, music, prayer, reading for pleasure, art, and circuits. These sessions allowed the children to reflect on activities that help them to relax or energise. The hope being they can use strategies from the week to help them in the future when they might feel overwhelmed. The Pre-school had a great first term of the academic year. The children have been learning about Winter and the changes brought about by the season
Yaxley Infant School Happy New year from Yaxley Infant School. Last month we found out who had won competitions and how much money we helped to raise. The New Decade started with a renewed focus on reading and reflecting on the success of our Christmas Fair As mentioned in the previous article we were asked by the local Methodist church to take part in their competition to design a Christmas Poster. Sarah, a local teacher who is linked closely with the church, also delivered an assembly to the children and spoke about the importance of Christmas. We had lots of entries with the children completing the challenge at home and are pleased to announce that George, Jessica and Amelie won the competition. Well done to all those children who took part to support the church. Last month we also received an email for St Peter’s church who were delighted with the success of the Christmas Tree Festival. They felt that the festival really brought the community together and there was a real sense of that over the two days. The event was far more successful than they could have imagined and raised £1,100 towards the SPC Project Fund, which is fantastic.
The Friends of Yaxley Infant school ran a very successful Christmas Fair before the Christmas break. There were lots of games, prizes, food and raffle prizes to be won. In total they raised over £1400 for projects that will benefit all of the children. Thank you to all the local businesses who donated prizes and to the Friends who organised this successful event. Offering these extra-curricular events would not be possible without the help and support of our fantastic parents. Thank you. More recently in January, the school has continued to make Early Reading a key priority. The school has invested heavily in new reading books in close collaboration with the English Hub. Teachers also organised a story cafe for parents and children to enjoy a story and complete activities related to the book. We were pleased to see so many parents/ grandparents and very happy, children! All Reading!
They also learned about safety around these changes, including firework safety. We even had a visit from a firefighter. The children very much enjoyed trying on all the equipment and learning about what it is used for. The children put on a fantastic Christmas performance for family to come and watch. They sang beautifully and looked adorable in their costumes. It was a wonderfully cute and festive afternoon. Our fundraising mission for this term was to raise £500 in order to develop the outdoor play area. Raffle prizes were donated by so many local business, the Pre-school is so grateful for the generosity that was shown. The Coop in Yaxley kindly allowed us to sell raffle tickets in store, plus parents did a great job of selling them on to friends and extended family. The Preschool arranged a Christmas themed pub quiz. This turned out to be a brilliant night, great fun to attend but also a fantastic fundraiser. The Addison Arms in Glatton not only hosted the event and provided a £50 cash prize, but also donated to top up the total raised that night to £500! The proceeds of the night, plus raffle ticket sales and refreshments/tombola at the Christmas concert combined to exceed the fundraising target. This alongside the Bags 2 School, Name tags, Easy Fundraising and two generous donations meant we raised double our fundraising target - an amazing £1000.62! The Pre-school staff and committee give thanks to all who have supported and enabled the above. We look forward to seeing the children enjoying the outdoor play area this summer.

Fourfields After the Christmas break, the children at Fourfields have returned full of energy to start the New Year and a new term at school The break was well deserved, especially for the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children, who, as ever, put on some amazing performances in their Christmas productions. We were incredibly proud to receive an overwhelming amount of donations from our school community this year and can announce that over £800 was raised for the ‘Young Minds’ charity. Thank you so much for your generosity. We were sad to say our farewells to Jon Brown, our Deputy Head Teacher, who retired after 24 years at Fourfields and even more as a teacher. Mr Brown was presented with gifts from the children and staff and in return he gifted the school a real Christmas tree which was planted at the front of the school and which we hope will continue to grow for many years and give us a wonderful memory of Mr Brown. Mr Brown was part of many of our family’s lives as he had taught across generations of the families at Fourfields. Our return in January has seen us welcome Mr Neil Coaten, who joins us as a class teacher in Year 5. He is already part of our Fourfields family and we hope he enjoys all the adventures that Fourfields has to offer! Fourfields were extremely proud to be represented at the final of the Cambridgeshire English Challenge by four talented year 6 pupils. Hero, Charlie, Dylan and Katie had qualified for the final by winning their heat in a tightly fought competition. The final was held in the beautiful setting of Ely Cathedral where the top performing schools competed in a range of English challenges. The team worked tirelessly and demonstrated excellent teamwork. Although they didn't finish in the top three, they had a final placing in the top 10% of schools in Cambridgeshire. Well done!

Year 6 at William de Yaxley have been learning how to write a non - chronological report. The pupils have displayed particular knowledge about the early part of the second world war and in particular, evacuations. L has written the following report with sympathy and with great detail. Please enjoy! Evacuation means the removal of a person from a place of Danger to a place of safety. War was declared in September 1939 and this began the evacuation of vulnerable children out of the highly populated cities and into the quieter, safer, less populated countryside. Children were transported in huge numbers. Some children were told that they would only be away for a matter of weeks. Transport 800,00 children were crammed into long trains. Trains were the best way of transporting the evacuees. This is because they held the greatest number of children, allowing for large numbers of children to evacuated at once. The trains guards looked after the children who were on the train and made sure they were behaving. Evacuee’s met at school and were walked to the train station by their teachers. The parents that insisted on walking to the train station made the goodbyes so much more tearful and emotional. Billeting The billeting officer took the children to the adults they were to stay with. These were the adults who for varying reasons, could not go to war. At the beginning of the war only men between the ages of 20 – 45 went to war. The women who were left behind, were the ones who took in children (although they had to have a spare room). Apart from the clothes they wore, children were only allowed to bring: Boys 1 vest 1 shirt 1 pair of pants 1 jersey 1 pair of trousers 6 handkerchiefs 2 pairs of socks

Farcet C. of E. Primary School We have had an exciting few weeks of learning here at Farcet, with lots of wonderful learning opportunities. During DT in Year 5 and 6, the children researched pasta dishes and healthy ingredients. They used this information to design their own recipes. The children then made (and ate!) their recipes. They evaluated the meals and thought about how they would improve them. Year 3 and 4 pupils visited Rocket Park Studios to record their very own Christmas album! The children really enjoyed their 'Playlist' topic and loved being recording artists for the day. Every class has welcomed parents and carers into school to celebrate the term’s learning. The children enjoyed celebrating the progress they had made and were very proud to share this with the adults. We ended the autumn term with a beautiful service at St. Mary’s church and a wonderful Christmas lunch. We are now looking forward to the spring term and all of the opportunities it will bring.

Favourite Peterborough Moments Hundreds of residents have shared their favourite places and moments in Peterborough as part of a citywide, award winning #1000Moments campaign The campaign is all about positively celebrating our city through sharing moments, memories, and stories of life in Peterborough. 80 residents who contributed their moments were professionally photographed and filmed, and the photographs are being posted on the Peterborough Presents Facebook page in the run up to Valentine’s Day 2020. All of the collected memories can be found on the We Love Peterborough website, and include walks along the Nene, football matches at London Road, sledging at Ferry Meadows, being Bretton Festival Princess and the joy of being in a mosh pit.
The #1000Moments project is a collaboration between Peterborough Presents, We Love Peterborough, Jumped Up Theatre, Thomas Byron Photography and Peterborough Regional College.

Winter Ladybird Survey This winter Buglife hosted a two-week ladybird survey over the Christmas break a time of year when traditionally ladybirds hibernate The survey received 145 records of 1200 ladybirds including 18 aggregations of ladybirds, but only three east of Birmingham The non-native invasive Harlequin ladybirds generally form the indoor winter aggregations there were fewer aggregations recorded than predicted. This does raise the question are there fewer Harlequins this winter than recent years? A number of predators and parasites - nematode, mite, fungus and wasp - have recently been found attacking Harlequins. If this is the case then perhaps our native ladybirds can recover from the impact of Harlequins or is this more symptomatic of an overall decline of all Ladybirds? There were records from Ramsey and Oundle sent in but both were of a single Ladybird and in Peterborough just after the survey closed I found a number of 7-spot Ladybirds on a walk but no sign of any Harlequins. If you are interested in looking further into the Ladybird survey results the UK Ladybird Survey is a long running volunteer-led recording scheme collating information on all ladybirds. We are excited to have the opportunity to collaborate with you all in mapping the distribution of ladybirds across the UK. The information gathered will be used in many different ways to assess the status and trends of ladybirds.

Great Fen in the spotlight Did anyone spot the Great Fen on telly last month? The BBC’s Antiques Road Trip came to the region in early January, and as well as trawling antiques emporiums and outlets across the region, visited places of national interest along the way. Antiques expert James Braxton called in at the Great Fen to hear all about the history of British conservation with research and monitoring officer Henry Stanier Philanthropist and conservationist Charles Rothschild bought the fragment of fen, Woodwalton Fen, at the heart of the Great Fen, back in 1910 when he realised that this habitat was fast disappearing - an act of far reaching vision. The society he founded in 1912 became the forerunner of The Wildlife Trusts movement we know today. He met up who talked him through all the work at the Great Fen – and they had time for spot of pond dipping. Earlier last year BBC1’s Escape to the Country also came to the Great Fen to learn all about the rich
heritage of conservation and the ongoing fenland restoration. Presenter Jules Hudson met restoration manager Lorna Parker and they filmed at Rymes Reedbed where Jules heard about all the species which can be seen from this double-height bird hide, from short eared owls to myriad butterflies and dragonflies. They travelled on to film at the Rothschild bungalow, where Jules joked that this could be the final 'mystery house/property' on the programme! Look out for the new series (which this episode is part of) to be broadcast later in the year.

Throughout the 20th century, protected sites have striven to protect our wildlife but with limited success. The vision of Great Fen is a beacon both for the future of some of Britain's most unique wildlife but also the changes which modern societies need to make if we are to continue to live in a world rich in natural resources. Bitterns and business can live together and this book provides the background as to how this can be achieved."

There are three main contributing factors to pet obesity: Incorrectly portioned pet food meals – the quantity being given at mealtimes should be measured out according to the pet’s desired target weight and not actual weight at the
time and also taking in to consideration their lifestyle. Feeding inappropriate food – the calories in our human food has far more impact on our pets. But there's one aspect of fitness that is almost always overlooked; our core muscles. Whenever I talk about building muscle everyone pictures someone at a weight bench pumping iron until their biceps bulge out of their shirts. But strengthening and toning your muscles can be much more subtle. And even a small amount of work on your core strength can dramatically improve your overall fitness and well-being.
What are Your Core Muscles? Your core muscles form a ring around the middle of your body. Most people think of the six pack muscles in the abdomen, but the core includes a range of muscles in your sides and back as well. Their job is to keep the top and bottom halves of your body connected together whilst allowing them to move independently. They form a strong foundation that the majority of your other muscles depend upon when you move your body.

Don’t let online romancers steal your heart - or your money With the most romantic day of the year just around the corner. Valentine’s Day is not just for those people who are already ‘coupled up’ An estimated seven million UK residents are registered on dating sites, and around one in three relationships in the UK now start online. However, while for many it may be romance and roses; for an increasing number of others it can spiral into heart break and a financial misery. Romance fraud affects thousands of people; with woman making up the majority of victims. According to Action Fraud, scammers swindled victims out of an average of £11,145 each during 2018. There are many local stories including one woman who lost everything, including her home (read the full story at the link below*). Fraudsters trick victims into sending money or gather enough personal information to steal their identities; resulting in an overall cost to victims of £50 million. The majority of accounts on dating websites are genuine people looking for romance, but fraudsters may try to contact you by making fake profiles, getting in touch and building what feels like a loving relationship. Once a fraudster using a fake dating profile is confident that they’ve won your trust, they will tell you about a problem they’re experiencing and ask you to help out by sending money. They may have arranged to visit you, but need money to pay for the flight or visa. They may tell you everything has been booked but their ticket has been stolen, and you need to send money quickly to get them on the next flight. Alternatively they may prey on your sympathies, telling you a family member or someone else they are responsible for is ill and they need money for medical treatment. Once you send them money, the fraudsters will keep coming back and invent new reasons to send them more. There are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe from fraudsters - who often target the vulnerable, the lonely or recently widowed or divorced: Don't rush into an online relationship Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions. The vast majority of romance fraud is initiated online.
Analyse their profile Protect yourself by confirming their identity. Check the person is genuine by putting the following into your search engine: their name, profile picture (by simply using a reverse image search) and any repeatedly used phrases, along with the term 'dating scam'. Be mindful that a fraudster could be hiding behind an alias and have changed details connecting them to previous fraudulent activity.
Talk to your friends and family Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them. Romance fraud involves grooming over a long period of time. Alienating a victim from their friends and family can make up part of that process.
Evade scams Never send money or share your bank details with someone you've only met online. It doesn't matter how long you've been speaking to them or what story they give behind needing the sum.
Stay on the dating site messenger service Fraudsters will often encourage their victims to use different communications channels that are often undetectable. Be confident that you know who you are speaking to and be wary if they fail to meet you in person.

Tax Changes from 6 April 2020 Inheritance Tax (IHT) remains an unpopular tax in the minds of the UK public with many considering it to be an unfair tax, as taxpayers have already paid tax on the original earnings and income and are then taxed a second time upon death With these criticisms in mind, the Residence Nil Rate Band will be increased to £175,000 which means that along with the existing IHT Nil Rate Band, taxpayers will be able to leave estates of up to £500,000 without being liable for inheritance taxes. For estates over £2 million, this band is tapered accordingly. Landlords and those with second properties will be hit by a number of changes. Landlords will face the end of tax breaks on mortgage interest expenses, which have been gradually phased out since April 2017 and will come to an end in April 2020. Changes to lettings relief will impact on taxpayers who let out second homes. The phasing out of tax relief on mortgage interest payments will hit higher rate taxpayers. As it has been replaced by a 20% tax credit, basic rate taxpayers are likely to be unaffected although changes to how mortgage income is reported through Self Assessment may push more
taxpayers into a higher tax rate band. Other changes to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) relating to property mean that from 6th April 2020, any CGT payable on property sales must be reported to HMRC within 30 days of the sale with an advance payment on the tax due at the same time. Previously, CGT would not be reportable or payable until the individual was required to file their Self Assessment tax return. There are proposed changes to the National Insurance threshold, due to rise to £9,500 in April 2020, stating “The new government has publicly committed to improving the lot of lower-paid workers so intend to raise the threshold for National Insurance to £9,500 with a longer-term intention to raise it to the current tax threshold of £12,500”. The 2020/21 tax year begins on 6th April 2020, which is when changes to IHT, CGT and Mortgage Interest Relief will come into force. Finally, will a spring budget affect these proposals?
