...to the December issue. 'Tis the season to be JOLLY! It’s the countdown to Christmas; time to eat, drink and be merry, and whether we are able to spend it with family, friends, pets or individually this year, let’s make sure that we all wish each other a Merry Christmas, show kindness, spread the laughter and joy, and support each other at this time. Organise Facetime or Zoom parties with family and friends and get together to create Christmas gatherings, music, games, fun, joke telling and laughter. So, Christmas check list: Christmas tree, decorations, lights, wine, food, gifts, Christmas cracker jokes – sorted. Rather than send the usual Christmas socks this year, why not shop local and support local businesses. So, Merry Christmas, may Santa’s sacks be plentiful. Festive love and best wishes,

Alison McGuinness, President As I write this, Lockdown 2 (LD2) has started, who thought we would still be doing this at the end of the year. We are now knitting for the Winter Warmers Campaign, to provide families with babies and small children knitted jumpers, hats, mittens etc for the coming winter months. Much needed scrubs are still being made for the NHS as well. We recently ‘dropped’ Halloween themed educational bags to all our members containing a fruit cake recipe, a Halloween quiz, a wordsearch puzzle, some sweet treats and a sachet of hot chocolate and marshmallows for a sweet drink too! Now we just need to get through this second lockdown. Anyone wishing to contact us please email WIholmevillage@gmail.com Stay well and Stay safe.

Pauline Brown

Hello to all W I members past & present. Not a lot to say about 2020 but I think we shall all be pleased when it is over so we would just like to wish everyone a Happy (Covid Free) Christmas & A Healthy New Year and hopefully we shall get back to some sort of normality in 2021.

4

The majority of our committee meetings were held by telephone conference, and when eventually after the first ‘lock-down’, our Health Safety & Wellbeing officer Viv Hempsell ensured the appropriate precautions were in place when we did get to play. This year only club games were possible. To ensure adequate spacing, we played on alternative rinks (1, 3, & 5) or (2, 4, & 6) and a maximum of 18 players allowed on the green at any one time. The club house was closed and all equipment sanitised after every game. In the absence of any National, County and District League competitions a Club Mini League was organised, playing on Tuesday and Friday afternoons. This proved very successful with around 18 players participating. A total of 18 games were played with the final game of the season on Friday 25th September. The Ladies had their own round-robin competition with around 6 ladies playing. Winner of the mini-league was Michael Ratcliff (pictured), with runner-up Robert Heath. Ladies winner was Hazel Bass with runner-up Viv Hempsell. We did also manage to play a knockout Handicap singles competition, Winner Tony Duthie with Trevor Woods runner-up, and a Drawn Pairs

competition, Winners Chris Blythe & Tony Duthie, runners-up Rob Dearnley & Bob Tills. Despite all the problems we’ve had this year, some good did come out of it all. The club got together, with members, who normally only play in friendlies games playing alongside some 1st team players. I can see some promotion up the ranks, when we get to play again in the future and teams are picked! Throughout it all, the green has been kept in perfect condition due to the work of our groundsman John Thurston and his team of volunteers – we thank them. Other Notices: Our AGM was cancelled, but hopefully will be held, if at all possible, before the start of the season next year (probably in March). And once the season starts, we will have mains electricity at the club, this has come at considerable expense, but does mean we will be doing away with the smelly diesel generator and can have an automatic watering system reinstalled on the green Merry Christmas to everyone and remember to continue to keep safe.

CHRIST MAS Santa is visiting Yaxley firefighters for the 48th year Yaxley's on-call firefighters will be hosting Father Christmas once again to spread some much needed festive cheer throughout the village for the annual Christmas Ride. Now in its 48th year, festive firefighters will be taking him for a ride around the village over four days, from Monday 14 December until Thursday 17 December. On each night they aim to begin their journey between 6pm and 6.30pm. The fire engine will follow a different route each night. Firefighters will walk alongside the fire engine collecting donations for The Fire Fighters Charity, who provide support, rehabilitation and care for fire service personnel across the country. To ensure the event is safe for everyone in light of COVID-19, those supporting the event are asked to socially distance. Unfortunately the on-call firefighters won’t be able to hand out lollies this year. For full details of each route, follow Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service on Facebook and Twitter, where they’ll share a link so you can track them on route.

They then asked if more could be made for the rest of the staff so they rose to the challenge and managed to make a further 24 sets. All of the scrubs were made from the rainbow fabric that had been donated by the Chris Evan’s Foundation, a charity which aims to support the the volunteer scrub makers all over the country during the pandemic. It was a request from the charity that the fabric only be used for NHS workers so, of course, this was perfect for our local surgery.

At the same time as sending the rainbow fabric the group was also allocated some children’s fabric which was put to good use by our seamstresses. The sewers were also able to supply St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice in West Sussex with sets made from the various children’s fabrics. At the beginning of September the group decided to hold a socially distanced afternoon tea for all the sewers so they could meet each other in person rather on a Zoom meeting. The weather was favourable and enabled it to be held outside at the Yaxley Scout and Guide Hut. They agreed that it was: "Lovely to meet face-to-face and discuss ‘scrub’ sewing! The homemade cakes went down particularly well and a great afternoon was had by all."

health The Doctors and Staff wish you all a very Happy, Safe and Healthy Festive Season!

Celebrating Christmas As I write this we are in the first week of the 2nd Lockdown and still unable to use our beautiful little Chapel. During Advent we wait and prepare for Christmas but this year we may be celebrating the Birthday of Jesus in a very different way. With no services, no concert and no festive coffee morning we will be relying on the Internet for our chance to celebrate together. Our Sunday Services at 10.30 and morning prayers at 8.30 are via Peterbrough Circuit YouTube and Peterborough Methodist Circuit Facebook page and this will continue until we can once again open the door and welcome you back into the Chapel. Our Yaxley facebook page also has a Sunday message. Following a few beautiful sunny Autumn days which helped to lift spirits it has reverted to the 'Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness. As the nights are drawing in and with the uncertainty surrounding us we may be feeling anxious. But the greatest gift of Christmas is the Light and the Hope that the birth of Jesus gave us.

Lakeside Healthcare You are twice as likely to be inactive if you are living with a long term health condition. 15 leading health and social care charities representing many of the 15 million people living with long term health conditions, along with the support from Sport England, have come together to create a unified voice and to develop a unique and important behaviour change. The campaign 'We Are Undefeatable' aims to change the misconception that those of us with long term health conditions can’t be active. It seeks to inspire and empower those of us who are least active to build physical activity into our lives in small chunks, in a way that long term health conditions allow, whilst celebrating every little victory. The campaign includes inspirational real-life experiences of people with long term health conditions getting active despite the ups, downs and unpredictability of their condition. Visit https://weareundefeatable. co.uk/our-community

I pray that we will be able to spend Christmas with our families and friends and know the true meaning of Christmas. Not the tinsel, presents and turkey but Love for each other. We wish you peace, hope, love and the light in your lives. Not just at Christmas but also in the coming year.

St Peter's Church at Christmas You will have heard or seen the news headlines at some point this year saying “Christmas is cancelled” I can assure you it is not! Christmas took place over 2000 years ago in a stable in Bethlehem when God came to earth in the form of Jesus. This has been the strangest year ever for all of us in different ways and our celebration of Christmas may also be strange and probably different. However, the message of the angels was one of peace and joy: 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.” Luke Chapter 2.

year, God came and walked on earth with us. In this season that may be different, in this time when we could be fearful, we can remember that Christmas cannot be cancelled and God walking the earth changed everything for all time.

23 “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means, “God is with us.”

Happy Christmas from St Peter’s Church, Yaxley. Please do join us throughout December with our Explorers activities and in our services, which will be online on St Peter’s, Yaxley YouTube Page. There will be a service in person on Christmas Eve for our Midnight service (starting 11.30pm) and Christmas morning at 10.00am IF Coronavirus restriction allow.

Jesus, Emmanuel is God with us on earth. In all that may be strange and different this

May you know the blessings of Emmanuel in this Christmas season. Rev Sarah.

Matthew’s Gospel Chapter 1 tells us this:

We will need people to book in for services in church so please do contact the Parish Office on 07939 449255. For more information, please follow our Facebook pages – St Peter’s Church, Yaxley and/or Community of St. Peter’s Church, Yaxley

You may have seen in the newspapers that Airbnb will share data with HMRC about the earnings of hosts (those who let out property) on its UK platform in the years 2017/18 and 2018/19. It is anticipated that HMRC will use this data to open enquiries into the tax affairs of individuals who have not declared letting income for 2017/18 and 2018/19. The deadline for opening an enquiry into a self-assessment return for 2018/19 is 31 January 2021, if the return was issued and submitted on time. The discovery rules allow HMRC to go back much further, potentially up to 20 years in some cases if the property income has not previously been reported.

Rent Covered by Rent a Room Relief For many property owners the rental income will be tax free if it is within the £7,500 rent a room relief and will not even need to be reported. This applies where room(s) in the taxpayer’s main residence are rented out, typically to lodgers. Where the house is owned jointly, they would qualify for £3,750 each tax free. This £7,500 exemption would also apply where the property owners are temporarily absent and rent out their property, for example a house in SW19 during the Wimbledon fortnight. A few years ago, it was proposed that such lettings would not qualify but the legislation was dropped and the CGT lettings relief restriction was introduced in the latest Finance Act instead.

younggazette Holme Church of England Primary Academy We are a small village school, just outside of Yaxley. Mrs Thomas (Head of School) As we near Christmas, it gives us the opportunity to reflect on the positives in our school community. The children have settled back well and have enjoyed reconnecting with their friends, especially at break times. The teachers and support staff have adapted well to the many new safety rules and are being creative to ensure lessons remain fun and engaging. The children are now grouped into Bubbles and enter and leave at different times. The School Community have adapted brilliantly to changes and followed the rules to keep our ‘small but mighty’ school safe. This term we have adapted our events to include a virtual ‘Harvest Festival’ , virtual ‘parent meetings’ and virtual Christmas events. Being a Church school, Christmas is an important festival for us and we are working hard to make it as enjoyable and ‘normal’ as possible. The children will be joining other schools for a virtual ‘Christingle Service’ and experiencing a virtual Pantomime. To replace the daily face to face conversations with staff, we have introduced a whole school communication system called Class Dojo. This allows messages to be sent between home and school. 100% of our families are engaging with this app and finding it beneficial. Please visit our website for our virtual tour. www.holme.cambs.sch.uk Do message the school if you have any questions, specific to your child.

Yaxley Infants School

Walking to School and Video Parents Evenings The YIS team Last month we mentioned that the school had launched a new campaign called the ‘5-minute walking bubble’ which encourages families to create a 5-minute protective walking bubble around our school so that everyone can travel safely and actively into school. This was a great success and we have been so impressed with how the children are following the new social distancing guidelines on the way to school and are showing great compassion and respect for themselves and others by giving each other plenty of space. We have also just taken part in national ‘walk to school’ week which was very successful for us (everyone had their fingers crossed for dry weather). We are very close to obtaining our Modeshift STARS Silver award at Yaxley Infant School and we are hoping with the support of our parents and carers we will be proud owners of this award very soon. Normally at the end of the first Autumn half term parents are invited to parents evening. Unfortunately, with the current national pandemic this was not able to happen in person. Rather than send out reports to parent’s governors felt that a personal approach with parents would be preferable and it would be more in line with our school’s ethos. We as a school were able to offer and facilitate Zoom calls to all parents. It was lovely to see all of you and talk with you in person. It has been so difficult not being able to meet with parents and make the relationships we value. We hope that those meeting helped in some way to strengthen that bond.

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School The children have enjoyed exploring different media and materials to create their very own festive pictures. Christmas is a very exciting time and this year is no exception. The children will be having lots more fun participating in more art and crafts and lots of singing of Christmas songs to get everyone into the festive spirit.

The School also have a new website www.yaxley.cambs.sch.uk which has been used to post work for remote learning when we have had to close bubbles. The site includes all the information parents will need so we encourage you to visit our new site if you are a current or prospective parent.

A big thank you to all our families for your ongoing support throughout these challenging times.

Normally at this time of year we would be advertising school tours to prospective parents. Sadly, this year we are unable to do this. This Autumn, year 6 have been learning about the Battle of Britain and the events that led up to it. In conjunction with this we have been reading Goodnight Mr Tom by Michelle Magorian. This is a lovely story of a deprived young Londoner who is evacuated to the West Country to live with an aging recluse with a gruff demeanour. The two characters forge a strong and loving bond. Unfortunately, the boy is recalled to London by his mother. He does not reply to letters from friends or his new guardian and this becomes a cause of great concern, so Mr Tom goes to London to check on the boy's welfare. Tied up in a cupboard, battered starving and parched, Mr Tom rescues him just in the nick of time. Year 6 wrote newspaper reports about the apparent kidnapping of the boy. We have loved the book and the study of the Battle of Britain and of course it has involved some sensitive and respectful class discussions about the legacy of the war.

Christmas

Step into

Tis the Season to be jolly, fa la la la la, la la la la... Christmas is by far the best time of year here in the Northern Hemisphere, with morning frosts and dew, the 1-in-a-million chance of snow settling on the ground, Michael Buble and Mariah Carey defrosted and belting out their Christmas Hits; we all know what Mariah wants for Christmas, and the designated Christmas Movie channels showing every Christmas B Movie available. Christmas Movies seem to be some of the best about, and there is a lot of debate about what defines a Christmas movie (for the record, if it is set at Christmas, contains Christmas music and it is mentioned that it is Christmas in the movie, then it's a Christmas movie, which means DIE HARD is 100% a Christmas movie) but 1 thing is for certain, we all have our favourites! Whilst these lists are contentious to say the list, we all find a favourite in every list. Here are some of my personal favourites:

T Santa Claus The Movie:

David Huddleston was my Santa growing up, along with Dudley Moore's Patch and John Lithgows manipulative B.Z.. This is an absolute classic Christmas film for everyone to enjoy!

T Elf:

What Jon Favreau has done to Marvel and Star Wars, he did for Christmas Movies with the enigmatic Elf, arguably one of the best Christmas films ever, along with it being Will Ferrell's best performance. Cult status achieved!

T The Polar Express:

This is one of my personal favourites, with the animation and the soundtrack being one of the best ever. A brilliant story adds to the charm of this amazing film.

T The Santa Clause:

Tim Allen shines as a stuffy businessman who accidentally causes Santa to fall off the roof, thus taking over and coming to terms with his new job as Santa. Excellent supporting cast and storytelling.

T The Christmas Chronicles:

Kurt Russell excels as a tell-it-as-it-is Santa, helping to bring some 2belief” back to a non-believer, with some excellent songs and a brilliant cast to go with it. Netflix hit the jackpot with this one, with the sequel just released. A cult classing in the making.

T Home Alone:

I genuinely don't believe I need to explain this one right?

T Jingle All The Way:

Arnie races against time to buy his son the must-have toy for Christmas, coming up against a disgruntled Postman, a neighbour with amorous intentions on his wife and a Reindeer with its sights set on him. Hilarity ensues!

T National Lampoons Christmas Vacation:

Christmas isn't the same without Clark. W Griswold screeching about how terrible his boss is whilst in full melt down, a “killer squirrel” leaping from the tree and Randy Quaid dumping his RV's loo into the street drains. Comedy Gold. Other notable mentions for some excellent Christmas films are: Trapped in Paradise, Scrooged, Klaus Last Christmas, Love Actually, Deck The Halls Christmas with the Kranks, The Holiday The Grinch (Not the new one! Jim Carey's genius turn is the ONLY one!)

localfarming “I’ll be staying up on New Year’s Eve for one reason only; to make sure 2020 definitely leaves.”

Farm FROM THE

Farmer Tom & Lisa

What a year its been! We’ve been on lockdown twice, we’ve experienced quiet roads and clear skies, we’ve supported and been supported by our neighbours, and we’ve lost loved ones in difficult circumstances all owing to this awful virus.

On the farm we emerged from the wettest winter in living memory to be hit by record temperatures (July 31st 2020 was the 3rd hottest day on record) and a terrible harvest. The incredible hailstorm in July and storms Ciara, Dennis and Francis brought 40mph+ gusts which left crops flattened, and shook seed from ears of wheat and barley and from pods of rapeseed leaving tens of thousands of pounds worth of seed spoiling on the ground on our farm alone (yes, it really was that bad). Farming is an optimistic game however. Following the worst of years, even the most pessimistic farmer will beg and borrow to finance seed to plant the fields again and pray for better weather, prices, and profit. If we can find positives from this year – and there are some – riding high would be the reconnection with our food supply chains, farmers, and countryside as we all took more walks and worried for our food supply; many of us for the first time. Local producers have reported growth in interest and sales, and we’ve all thought more about our greatest needs of food and health.

Unless COVID-19 denies us, on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th December we’ll be hosting the Village Farm Christmas Farmers Market in Cathedral Square, Peterborough where you’ll be able to buy local beers, wines, and spirits as well as jams and preserves, bread, cakes, meat, cheese, and other products from local farms and food producers. We’re incredibly proud to partner with other producers, and look forward to seeing you there? Another positive from this year is that the government has agreed to establish the UK Trade & Agriculture Commission to advise members of parliament on the effects of future trade deals on food, farming, and rural business. With standards of animal welfare and environmental protection amongst the very highest in the world, we and other producers were extremely concerned that food could be imported which had been produced under conditions and using chemicals and other inputs which are illegal in the UK. This would not only be incredibly unfair, but would serve to export our carbon footprint, our guilt, and our environmental

and animal welfare impact. Whilst parliament refused THREE TIMES to put protections in to law to guarantee that all imports are produced to the same high standards, the new commission will act to advise parliament before they sign any future trade deals; a positive step. On the seasonal food front, further good news is that your farmers, fishermen, and food producers have continued to harvest and serve you, with local, fresh beetroot, brussels sprouts (yes!), butternut squash, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, celery, chicory, horseradish, Jerusalem artichoke, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, parsnips, potatoes, pumpkin, salsify, shallots, swede, and turnips available as well as fruits apple, pear, and quince available in December from the greengrocer, wild game including duck, pheasant, partridge, and venison as well as British reared meat and fish, and of course chestnuts and wild mushrooms, making for a veritable Christmas feast. On that note, we’d like to wish you and your families, and those you love a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year; bring on 2021!

Keeping it real

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas ... and this year we are offering free delivery! At Peterborough Christmas Trees they're always careful to consider the environment as well as quality. That's why they use UK sustainably farmed trees which positively impact their surroundings and have a low carbon footprint.

Looking After Your Christmas Tree

The trees are hand-pruned each year to ensure they grow to the perfect shape.

They welcome visits and are confident you won’t find better trees or service in the Peterborough area – so confident, that they offer their own quality guarantee.

This year, there are also Fraser Firs with their fantastic needle retention, traditional cone shape, wonderful smell and the needles are not sharp so safe for children too - have a look on the website.

They will help you find your perfect tree, prepare the base, net it and help you get it in your car. Just part of their excellent customer service, making your Christmas that bit more special!

Position your tree away from open flames and heat sources - it is a tree after all! When putting your tree up, leave it in the net, just pulling it clear of the trunk, set in the stand and add water. Lastly, remove the net over the top of the tree. This way you’re not fighting with the tree to get it in the stand!

Peterborough Christmas Trees is back at The Gordon Arms on Oundle Road (assuming lockdown has gone ok and pubs can open!), giving you their great family service and unbeatable nondrop Christmas trees; they offer only the highest quality trees, including potted, and in a range of sizes.

Of course, we must consider Covid-19. Our site is outdoors with plenty of space which keeps things easier, but we will maintain social distancing and wear face visors. Hand sanitizer will be at the pay point and in busy periods we may operate an entry system to limit numbers. Can’t come and see us? No problem, you can order online at: www.peterboroughchristmastrees.co.uk for FREE DELIVERY or call 07504 205155 Open 10am–6pm Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm Saturdays & Sundays from 2 December. Cards accepted.

Here’s some handy tips for making sure your tree is well cared for and that you can enjoy it for as long as possible:

Keep your tree in fresh water at all times. Peterborough Christmas Trees will prepare the base for you (like you cut the stem off flowers) and sell water holding stands. A larger tree can easily go through 0.5 litres per day! If your tree runs out of water, it begins to heal itself after a few hours which slows its ability to take up more water. Not the end of the world but better avoided. If you have a pot grown tree, the secret here is not to water too much as during winter, they reserve energy in the roots and don’t feed the needles. So just stop the soil from drying out - that’s it! Use a wine bottle or similar to top up the water as the long neck makes it easier to pour under the branches Finally enjoy it & be sure to send us a photo!

FOOD GUIDE Eat in, takeaway and delivery

The PerfectCheeseboard By Tom Hancock How much cheese? - Allow about 100g-125g (3½-4oz) cheese per person if your cheeseboard is being served after a meal, or slightly more - 150g (5oz) per person if you’re serving it as a snack/light meal. Which cheese? - Three or four cheeses is enough – more than that and there’s too much for the palate to enjoy. The cheeses should be different styles, textures and flavours. Cheddar, Stilton and Brie is a classic combination, as it mixes a hard, soft and a blue. Why not go totally British with a traditional West Country Farmhouse Cheddar matched with Cropwell Bishop, a wonderful robust blue, and maybe Bath Soft Cheese, which is gorgeously gooey and mushroomy in flavour. It's nice to put one wild-card cheese on the board like

18

a citrussy goat's cheese or meaty smoked cheese like St James. Crackers - A good oat biscuit, cracker or artisan bread will complement the cheese. Add a chutney - look for unusual brands at farmers' markets, and some apples or grapes. Drinks - After a meal a sweet fortified white wine is always good. You could even try a whiskey, or a gin and tonic. If the board is going to serve as a light meal, then beer or cider is a good choice. A note on storage - Store in a cold room or the bottom of the fridge, wrapped in waxed paper if possible This allows the cheese to breathe. Let the cheese to come up to room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving for maximum flavour.

Wine Wisdom

By Tom Hancock

Which wine should you choose? I was always a bit hazy about which wine to serve with which food. They didn’t teach that sort of thing at our local comprehensive. Then one day a chef friend explained that far from being an elitist concept it was simply about marrying flavours that blend well or complement each other, much like cooking. I managed to get her to distil her wisdom into this handy guide. Fish – A delicate fish dish calls for a delicate wine, such as Pinot Grigio. If the fish is more robust and served with a rich sauce, it will require a more full-bodied flavoursome white like Chardonnay. Salty seafood marries surprisingly well with champagne. Chicken or Turkey - Choose a full-flavoured white, like a white Côtes du Rhône, or a delicate red, such as a Frappato. Juicy red meat – For beef or steak a rich red, such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon will work well or even a Rioja. Spicy dishes – These require a spicy wine. Look for a Malbec, Syrah or Shiraz will all hold their own. If the spicy food is vegetarian, then a dry Riesling will pair well. Vegetarian food - There is a misconception that vegetarian food should only be served with white wine. But medium reds, like Merlot work well with lots of vegetarian dishes, particularly tomato-based recipes.

Cheese board - Some cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder. Remember, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine. So, a buttery sauce will work well with white a wine also described as ‘buttery’. Experiment and enjoy!

Part One by Stewart Howe and Michael Windle

This month we begin exploring the origins of Yaxley’s street names with Stewart Howe and former Yaxley Parish Council Clerk Michael Windle. If you have any additions please do get in touch on our Facebook group. The new estates will be featured in part two. Abbott Way – Named after George Wyman Abbott who was the parish council's solicitor and Lord of the Manor.

home to a church mentioned in the Domesday Survey (1086), which evolved over many centuries into the current day St Peter’s.

Ash Close – Named after village schoolteacher and historian Bill Ash.

Cock Close Road – Formerly Spire View.

Askew’s Lane – Named after William Askew who left a charitable endowment of £194 1s. 5d. in 1868 (proved and executed June 1869), the dividends of which are distributed to the poor of the parish. Beatons Close – Originally a small industrial yard with a couple of nissen huts and a number of sheds, the forerunner of the industrial estate. The owners were Mr and Mrs Chris Beeton who lived in the detached house on Middleton Road at the entrance to the yard. The parish council named it Beeton's Close, which the district council mis-spelled when the signs were produced. Blenheim Way – Named after the the Blenheim Orange (Dempster's Pippin) apples that grew in the orchard at this location close to Blenheim Cottage. Broadway – Literally the ‘broad way’, a large open or main road. Carysfort Close – Named after the Proby family, who were lords of the manor of Yaxley. The Earl of Carysfort was a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created in 1789 for John Proby, 2nd Baron Carysfort. The last Earl of Carysfort was William Proby (1836–1909). Chapel Street – Formerly Dobbs Lane and location of the Wesleyan Chapel (home to Circles of Yaxley) and Jireh (later Baptist’s chapel) now demolished. The latter had a pond used for baptisms. Yaxley Parish Council unsuccessfully tried to change the name to Queens Road in 1938. Church Street – Formerly Church Lane (Yaxley Parish Council changed the name in 1938) and

Cookson Close – Built on the site of William Cook Agricultural Engineers and Ironfounders, an engineering company that designed and manufactured agricultural equipment including the famous Champion Sacklifter and Cooks Elevator. When the estate at West End was built, the developers put forward the name Grange View but when parish Clerk Michael Windle pointed out that the village already had a grange and it was nowhere near, he was asked to think of another name. The road was eventually named Cookson Close in memory of William Cook and Son. Cow Bridge – The partially hidden bridge on the crossroads between Main Street, Windsor Road and Great Drove. This structure once spanned a navigable watercourse that allowed boats and lighter barges to enter Yaxley, travel through the Lode to the Meres, and to moor at the granary and Squire’s wharf and auction house at Yard’s End. An OS benchmark is visible here. Crane Avenue – Named after Amos Crane who served three terms as chairperson of Yaxley Parish Council from 1919 to 1925, 1929 to 1933 and 1938 to 1940. The decision to name a road after him was made in 1954 to mark 50 years service. He was also awarded the status of Alderman and Freeman of Yaxley by council members. Dovecote Lane – Named after Yaxley’s ancient Dovecote, which was located on the Proby’s manorial estate. Dovecotes were up until the 17th century a status symbol only enjoyed by the aristocracy and can be found close to great houses like Yaxley’s Burystead (Manor House). Folly Close – Named after a large house called The Folly that has been demolished.

Gault Park –the parish rubbish dump. When the railway line was constructed, clay or gault was dug up along the route to build up the embankment. Yaxley's contribution came from the gault pit which after it had been dug out, was utilised as a tip for domestic refuse. This continued until 1981 when the parish council obtained ownership of the land and bought in topsoil to cover the eyesore, which to the village people was known as the gollies. in 1982 it was decided to make the area into a village amenity and the land was levelled and brought into a condition suitable for the sewing of grass seed A number of pits were dug down through the refuse and filled with soil suitable for the planting of trees, which were supplied by the Huntingdonshire District Council. Great Drove – The gateway to the long since drained Trundle Mere (Yaxley’s fishery) and an ancient roadway along which cattle were driven to market. Hog Fen Road – Once home to a pig farm. Lancaster Way – Named to commemorate the sacrifice of RAF pilot Nebojsa ‘Neb’ Kujundzic, who lost his life in March 1943 when he chose to stay at the controls of his damaged Lancaster to clear houses and crash land in an orchard as his crew parachuted to safety. Lee Road – Named after the Reverend Charles Lee, the vicar of Yaxley who discovered Abbott William de Yaxley’s heart within a stone cavity in St Peter’s church in 1842. Lode (Yaxley Lode) – A late middle English word meaning a channel or watercourse. Main Street (Formerly Town Street) - Yaxley’s status as a town was revoked with the extinction of the market and the demolition of the infrastructure that supported it. The lode once flowed into a body of water called Trundle Mere.

Countryside

VOLUNTEERS

The Yaxley Countryside Volunteers (YCV) have been in existence for 36 years, this little known group work in partnership with Yaxley Parish Council (YPC) to maintain and improve the green spaces in the village for the whole of the community. This year has seen a gradual increase in membership numbers as we tackled a number of tasks around the village. In October/November 2019 the volunteers were allowed by the YPC to use a piece of land at the lower part of the “Rec” to construct a community orchard.

The group have also assisted in the cemetery cutting back the lavender and planting a wild flower mix in otherwise neglected areas.

Pound Lane a favourite spot for a photograph of the church spire has also benefitted from some TLC. We have cut the grassed area, reduced the nettle count, built “Bee Hotels”, planted more wild flowers, Firstly we erected a chestnut fence then removed duckweed and regrettably had set about digging holes for the fruit trees to remove some of the bee hotels from the with the help of Mr. D Watt. pond! We have planted approximately 100 fruit Very recently our group have planted 1,600 trees of various varieties and watered spring and summer bulbs in the Rec at YPC’s and maintained them through the request – look out for a colorful display in challenging year. 2021.

1

The members of YCV tend to meet on a Friday to accomplish these tasks. If you have an interest in maintaining the village to a standard we can use and be proud of and would like more information please contact Reg Bingham on 07768 355917

Pets at Christmas Though Christmas is a fun time for humans, even we can feel overwhelmed. For our pets Christmas can be confusing, a bit scary and even dangerous. Here are the top reasons for emergency vet visits over the festive period, and how to avoid them. By Tom Hancock

Vomiting and diarrhoea – Often a result of Rover helping himself to Christmas goodies; one year my brother’s beagle helped himself to our entire cheeseboard, with predictable gastrointestinal consequences! But sometimes it’s a result of him being fed too many treats or rich food. Ask visitors to refrain from feeding your pets unless they have permission, and keep all festive food out of reach! Chocolate Dark chocolate is poisonous to dogs so seek advice immediately if you suspect that’s what he’s eaten. Lacerations or Bites When family members or guests bring their pet, bear in mind your dog or cat will see this as an intrusion into their territory, and some animals are very territorial indeed. Don’t leave unfamiliar animals alone together, even if they seem to be tolerating each other. In severe cases

enmity separate rooms might be in order. If a guest brings a dog and your kids own a treasured hamster or guinea pig keep the small furry being well out of danger; preferably put the cage on a high shelf. Soft Tissue Trauma Dogs and cats can be stepped on, have things dropped on them, or be hit by cars while running around on the drive as visitors arrive. If Grandma trips over your Chihuahua BOTH might end up in casualty so keep an eye on pets at all times. Foreign body ingestion The beagle who ate the cheeseboard ate the cheese AND most of the board. Some pets will eat anything. Christmas baubles, lights tinsel and small toys. Ask guests not to leave things on the floor and keep a watchful eye on Rover. If he’s quietly in a corner chewing something, check it’s not Grandma’s spectacles, or false teeth!

Wildlife Trust - past, present & future This has been such a tough year for everyone, but nature and wildlife has been there for us at a time when we needed it most. Nature reserves have provided havens for anyone looking to connect to the sanctuary and sanctity of nature, and throughout the year seasonal reminders help bring a sense of hope and continuity that only the natural world can offer, from the arrival of swallows and swifts in spring, wildflower meadows blooming in summer and wonderful woodlands in autumn. Seasonal winter visitors are taking up residence at the Wildlife Trust's nature reserves around Peterborough, with beautiful redwings being spotted at Dogsthorpe Star Pit from November. These splendid red speckled member of the thrush family fly in from semi arctic regions, some from Iceland, others from Russia and Scandinavia, feeding on fruit and berries in hedges and trees. The reserve has witnessed some wonderful bird sightings this year – from

majestic marsh harriers to elusive bitterns which hide in the reed beds. Reed buntings and warblers galore abound here also – as they do at nearby Lattersey nature reserve.

Christmas and beyond So anyone looking for a thoughtful eco present, as a way of 'paying nature back' might consider gift membership of the Wildlife Trust, a present to last throughout the year and an introduction to the discovery of wildlife on the doorstep. Members receive Local Wildlife magazine (children's version is Wildlife Watch) three times a year, information on events, local groups, walks, talks via newsletters – but the biggest benefit of all is knowing that local wildlife in the area, and all the conservation work involved, will be helped and maintained.

The Trust's work supports local wildlife in the area from protecting habitats on nature reserves and in the wider countryside, along with all the species which depend on these places.www. wildlifebcn.org/become-member

2021 Wildlife Calendar Earlier this year the Wildlife Trust's 2020 photography competition drew a record numbers of entries, and judging was held over the summer bringing plenty of choice to create a stunning 2021 wildlife calendar. It's not too late to order (if you're quick!) - the calendar can still be purchased for £8 via email at cambridgeshire@ wildlifebcn.org or call 01954 713543 and leave a message. Postage & packaging £1.50 for 1; £2 for up to 3; for other quantities, please enquire. www.wildlifebcn.org/calendar-2021

Long Nights As we move into December the days grow to their shortest peaking with the winter solstice. A time of minimal plant growth and precious little bug activity. But recent winters have been warmer and wetter rather than cold and dry. This warmth means many normally hibernating bugs will still be active. Unless the temperature drops below and stays below five degrees Celsius hibernation is not possible. This in turn means normally dormant bees are on the wing foraging for food in the short daylight hours. Indeed queen bumblebees that should be hibernating have been known to start new winter nests. It is questionable how viable these winter colonies are since flowers are in short supply. In parts of New Zealand wasp nests no longer die out in winter but grow ever bigger all year round often

reaching a diameter of more than two metres – could this be the future for our wasps too. Also active in these warmer climes are slugs and snails and they of course do just two things eat and breed. Whilst most feast on decaying plant matter others do prefer fresher matter bad news for autumn sown beans or other overwintering plants.

This poses big questions for all as to how best can we help our wildlife cope with these changing times. For the pollinators we need to look to ensure year round flowering of plants. Early bulbs such as snowdrops and crocus, winter jasmine, viburnum tinus, rosemary and perhaps leave a few brassicas standing to go to seed. For slug and snail control we may need to rethink how we feed the winter birds to encourage them to forage more.

staysafe Cambridgeshire Bobby Scheme The Bobby Scheme is a small local charity established in 2001 by The Cambridgeshire Police Shrievalty Trust, it was set up by the then Chief Constable and the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire. The aim of the charity is to keep older and vulnerable people safe in their own homes by improving their home security and reducing crime and the fear of crime. The scheme has 4 staff members including 2 Bobby Security Advisors who visit victims aged 60 years or older and domestic abuse victims. They improve security by installing devices such as door chains, window alarms, locks, bolts, external mailboxes, spy holes and more recently video doorbells, driveway alarms and solar lighting. Their knowledge of other services available locally enables them to offer further assistance as well as offering advice and guidance to give confidence and reassurance. This service is free and work on a referral-based system. The scheme also visits older people aged 65 and over, or who are vulnerable, or disabled who feel at risk of becoming a victim as a pro-active visit, aimed at reducing their fear of crime and provide peace of mind. We offer the same service but ask for a contribution of £50. However, should you wish to make a separate donation if will be gratefully received as the average cost of a visit is £150. Without donations we would not be able to assist so many frightened people feel safe in their own homes, where they should feel the safest! To make a donation please visit our website www.thebobbyscheme.corg

We can also supply and fit Key safes, allowing carers to gain access to residents who wish to stay in their own homes and live independently. These can be supplied and fitted at £65. All our devices are Secure by Design products and have Police Accreditation. We also are working in partnership with Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and carry out Home Fire Security Checks at every visit and fit smoke alarms where appropriate. Please like our FB & Twitter pages. On the right there is some latest advice around most common scams currently circulating. Passing on from a friend’s daughter who works for the City of London Police.

Spread the word to your family and friends!” https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ Be vigilant!

Online Christmas Shopping - stay savvy, not sorry! Let's face it – shopping at the moment isn’t the kind of retail therapy we once knew and enjoyed, particularly given the recent second lockdown and limited access to non-essential goods. For many people, going to the shops for basics is seen more of a necessity or even a chore; so it will come as no surprise that an increase in online shopping in 2020 has also meant a rise in scams. Figures show that online shopping and auction fraud shot up by a third in 2020, with increased spending during lockdown highlighted as the main cause. Interestingly, four in five online shopping fraud victims were under the age of 50, with those in their Twenties being the most likely to be victim of online shopping fraud. And while ‘tis the season of Christmas shopping, the festive fraudsters will be looking to make mischief and bring misery to millions. However, there are some wise words from Action Fraud when it comes to staying safe.

Choosing where you shop Carry out your own research if you are buying something from a company or person you don’t know or trust. If you decide to go ahead with the purchase, use a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers insure online purchases. Some other payment methods do provide good consumer protection, but they aren't obliged to provide the same protection as a credit card provider.

Keep your devices up to date Make sure you install the latest software and app updates. These usually contain important security updates that can protect you against fraud and identity theft. Just turn on automatic updates so your device will update itself in future.

Secure your email account Having a strong password is the first defence against cyber criminals who are looking to hack into your email account to steal valuable information like bank details and the logins for your other online accounts. They will use things like your address or date of birth when trying to crack your passwords. A strong password for your email should be one you don’t re-use anywhere else. This way, even if a hacker manages to access your email, they won't also be able to log into your online bank account.

Take care with links in emails and texts If the offer looks too good to be true, then it probably is. Be aware that links may come from fake websites, designed to steal your money and personal details. Not all links are bad, but if you are unsure don't use the link, go separately to the website. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)

Eileen Le Voi Safe Local Trades & Service

To give any online account additional protection, where possible, you should turn on two-factor authentication (2FA). 2FA is a way for the service you're using to double check that you really are the person you claim to be, when logging in.

Don't give away too much information Remembering the name of your favourite film or stating your city of birth aren’t needed for buying goods online, so only fill the mandatory details of forms when making a purchase. These are usually marked with an asterisk*. If you can avoid it, don’t create an account on a new site unless you’re going to use that site a lot in the future. You can usually checkout as a guest to make your purchase.

When things go wrong Scams can be incredibly sophisticated and hard to spot. If you think you may have been taken in by a bogus website, take a note of the website's address, then close down your internet browser. You can report the details to www.actionfraud.police.uk and contact your bank to seek advice. Safe Local Trades would like to wish all their customers, members and suppliers a very Happy Christmas.
