Welcome to the August issue of the Yaxley Gazette. This month has flown by, I think it went more quickly for me as I enjoyed a lovely trip around France, Switzerland and Austria, with my partner and two dogs. I am now fully refreshed and waiting for summer to start! Our local news covers a varied selection this month, we also have a Summer Holiday Guide for families, so if you are stuck for things to do in the school holidays, or any other time, have a look at what you could be doing, maybe taking an alpaca for a walk, or enjoying the nature on your doorstep. As always, we have updates from the local schools, surgery, churches, Neighbourhood Watch, Parish Council, library and much more. Charity Bike Ride 4 local friends recently set off on a 253 mile bike ride from Yaxley to Hunstanton, Wells on Sea, Cromer, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, and Thetford. Wayne Langley (Yaxley Riders & Yaxley Rider of the year) Richard Nightingale (Yaxley Riders) Matthew Smith (Yaxley Riders) Andy Gregg (Gorilla Firm) They left Yaxley at 3am on 8 July and travelled the 253 miles in 17 hours, returning back to Yaxley in the same day, they took on this epic ride to raise sponsorship for the Peterborough Amazon Ward. Well done to everyone involved.

Peterborough Amazon Ward The ward provides a comprehensive paediatric service both for elective and emergency care for all children up to the age of 16. It provides specialist orthopaedic surgery, paediatric urology and ENT surgery and some specialist maxillo-facial surgery. Children with chronic disease continue to receive paediatric care beyond the age of 16 should this be required. The paediatric High Dependency Unit (HDU) facility is used to care for very sick children. There is also a high standard of care offered to all children and their families, ensuring the necessary amenities for children and families with complex needs. The service is staffed by a team of experienced registered sick children’s nurses who are supported by a number of health-care support workers. There is a specialist hospital play team, specialist dieticians and specialist physiotherapists. The medical team is led by an experienced group of Consultant Paediatricians who have diverse skills and expertise. Parents and carers are allowed to stay overnight in a pullout / portable bed by the child’s bed. There are also a number of facilities for parents and carers on Amazon ward: There is a variety of child-friendly facilities on the ward and the ‘den’ (teenagers’ room) provides teenagers with age appropriate equipment in a separate area to the younger children. There is an outside garden area that consists of a selection of toys and seating areas to encourage children and families to enjoy some fresh air.

Parking is free for 90 minutes and after this a fine is enforced. There is no return within 1 hour. Therefore, it is very important that we have your up-to-date contact information. I have been at YGP for over 22 years and this summer I am fortunate to be taking a sabbatical. This is a scheme supported by all the doctors at the practice and open to all the partners once they have been at the practice for more than 9 years. I will be away for 13 weeks from 4 July and so will return on Monday 3 October. A sabbatical is an opportunity to take a break from the hectic pace that is General Practice these days and spend some time with family ‘recharging batteries’. Over the years, partners have done a variety of things including working at a leprosy mission, doing an Art degree, doing a qualification in Palliative Care and travelling all over the world. I intend to do some further education in acute medical emergencies and will be travelling to the USA and Spain with my family. I will report back on our Winnebago adventures through the Zion and Sequoia National Parks, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Venice Beach, to name but a few highlights. I hope to return re-energised and am confident that our wonderful team, including our newest doctors and nurses, will take excellent care of those patients I see regularly. I am grateful for this opportunity to spend time with my family before the kids grow too old to go away with their parents.

Fantastic Fossils
St Peter's Church ‘Love your neighbour’ ranks as some of Jesus’ most famous and challenging words and which, in the aftermath of the EU referendum, seem particularly pertinent. If my Facebook page was anything to go by, the debate and its subsequent fallout revealed much division between people. Sadly, opposing views were expressed not always with love and and respect but with animosity towards those who think differently. Indeed, I’m sure that whichever side of the debate we fell, we are equally troubled to hear of the rise in crimes against many EU nationals. In this divisive climate I wonder if it might cause us to ask the same question as it did when Jesus first uttered these words two millennia ago: ‘but who is my neighbour’? It was in response to this question that Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan, a tale in which the most unlikely of people goes out of their way to help another The story narrates a chance encounter between two men whose relationship should have been characterised by hatred and hostility but who are brought together through an act of love both given and received. Whilst Samaritans in our day evoke images of dedicated people waiting at the end of phone lines to help those in dire need, to Jesus’ hearers it would have been very different. Samaritans were people to be greeted with fear and suspicion and even hatred. Yet in Jesus’ story it was the Samaritan who turned out to be the good neighbour, it was the Samaritan who reached out in love. What I love most about Jesus’ parables is that they don’t tell us how to think or to act as much as they paint a picture of a different world to capture our imagination; they allow us to see our world through God’s eyes in which fear can be replaced by love, despair by hope and darkness by light. The EU debates and referendum have shone a light on the deep divisions in our country and there are clearly many wounds to be healed and many relationships to be reconciled. At a time which has been characterised by such division the parable of the Good Samaritan may be a timely reminder for us to consider the question, ‘who is my neighbour?’ and how can we reach out to them not in hostility but with hospitality and with love. Yaxley Methodist Chapel Following on from the Strawberry Tea we held in June, celebrating the Queen’s Birthday, donations for the Help for Heroes Charity has reached the excellent total of £200. Thank you for your generosity. We hope you have enjoyed the books The Servant Queen and The King She Serves given on that day. We were happy to learn that the children and staff at William De Yaxley Academy used the booklets we gave them, when they celebrated the Queen’s Birthday with a picnic. I went to Tesco one day this week and was approached by a very friendly, confident young lady telling me about the food bank and the Tesco collection point. I was able to tell her that our chapel accepts donations of non perishable food which we then take to St Peter’s Church, for distribution to those who need help in times of trouble. If you are unable to get to Tesco or to St. Peter’s please bring your donations of food to the chapel on coffee mornings or on Sunday mornings. Even a small contribution can make a huge difference to someone’s life. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue
Yaxley Parish Council updates Cemetery
The council have reviewed the time remaining with our existing cemetery. With the current rate of burials and reservations we have approximately 30 years remaining. The council have found that a high number of reserved plots are not used as people move away, family are not aware and the reserved plot is forgotten, etc. With this in mind we have elected to stop taking reservations of plots going forward. This will enable us to monitor the length of time left and will aid agencies reviewing the need for a replacement or extension of the cemetery. Note, Existing reserved plots will continue to be honoured under the previous agreement.
Hedges Plants are growing at alarming rates. With this in mind we wish to remind people to maintain their hedges running alongside footpaths to
allow safe passage of mobility scooters and baby buggies. Thank you.
Road users We have received a high number of complaints about driving, parking & speeding within the village. While we can, and have, referred this to Cambridgeshire County Council Highways asking them to review the roads and road use in Yaxley, we do not have powers to stop this happening. If you witness poor driving or parking, please refer this to the police directly as they can take appropriate action.
Defibrillators Yaxley’s first defibrillator has been installed outside Yaxley Group Practice. ‘Thank you’ to the Patients’ Association for their donation of £200 which has gone towards the cost of the cabinet. The second defib is to be installed at the new fire station on Main Street and should be available from September.

Bowls Update
The Godwin Cup was played in early July. The last two pairs will battle it out for the Cup on finals day, in early September. Congratulations to the pairs who have made it through; Stella Dale/Eugene King and Phil Bates/Ian Flack. In the leagues, the Yaxley Spitfires sit at the top of Division 1 in the over 60s league and are looking good for promotion to the Premiership, with the Hurricanes not far behind in third place. Yaxley Kites are handily placed in the Midweek Evening Premier league. And in the Weekend league, Yaxley Sharks are sitting in third place, with games in hand so could make a push for promotion. However, not so the Seals, who need a few wins to get them off bottom spot. Our players are progressing in the county competitions. Graham Agger is through to

the final of the 2-bowl singles, the Champion of Champions final, and could also be in the final of the 2-bowl triples. Norman Hill also has a chance of getting to the finals in the Vets singles. Viv Hempsell will be representing the ladies in the final of the Seniors’ 2-wood singles. Congratulations to them all. But the big story is how well the club is doing in the overall team competitions. There are 7 various style tournaments we still enter, the Dilly, Dan Duffy, Tatman, Mick Lewin, Munday Shield, Albert Rowlett and the Adams. They are now getting down to the latter rounds and we are still in 6 of these club cups. Hopefully, we will have some silverware to collect at the presentation night.

ut on the other hand, if the result had gone the other way and it was the leave campaigners demanding a second go, I would be just as dismissive as they are being now, so let’s try and not be hypocritical. Let’s also try and keep things in perspective. Livestock won’t start to spontaneously combust in the fields, pensioners won’t be forced to work for Sports Direct, white walkers won’t be spotted south of the wall and unwed teenage mothers won’t be fired into the sea. Society won’t crumble, but life will be hard, we will all be poorer (some more than others) and all we can do is hope that things might get back to where we are now/better in the future.
The thing that really worries me though is the sudden legitimisation of racism that the leave vote has brought crashing down upon us. Almost overnight, certain sections of society have found the belief that marginally over half the population of the country share the same despicable reasons for voting out that they do. Make no mistake – they don’t. Multiculturalism is what makes Britain great, and we can’t let our country be stained by abuse based on nothing more than geography. Whether you voted leave or not, as a member of the United Kingdom it is your duty to be disgusted and appalled by racism. We’ve already heard politicians talk
about deporting EU nationals, and if that enters the political agenda in Britain we will all be truly lost. Yaxley is our tiny corner of the country, and we need to defend it from those who feel it is their place to judge if you’re right to live here by the colour of your skin, what God you choose to believe in or what country you came here from. Do not tolerate racism. Be disgusted by it. Let the world know that you’re disgusted by it. And if you are someone who believes any of those things should prohibit someone’s right to be here, let me echo your own sentiments and say back to you ...get out, because you’re not welcome here.

LOCAL BOWLS CLUB FINANCIAL
Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Club For the past 5 years, we have held a 6 week introductory and training course on Saturday mornings. This year, we are starting on 6 August at 9.30am to introduce newcomers to this most enjoyable game.
T
hese introductory courses have previously proved to be very successful and over the years have resulted in well over 100 people coming along to give it a try. Most have found it to be pleasurable and you do not have to worry about the weather, a warm welcome always awaits you. As well as gentle exercise, bowling brings a new challenge and something to do over the winter months. We have over 250 bowling members and a third of these are ladies. This is a sport where finesse is more important than force and where the ‘gentle sex’ can comfortably hold their own! If you come to our introductory course, we will provide all the equipment necessary and all we ask is that you bring along a pair of flat soled footwear. (We have 5 separate rinks each costing over £10,000 so we have to look
after them.) Each rink measures 40 yards long and 6 yards wide and they will be staffed by experienced club members who will ‘show you the way’. By the end of the 6 weeks, you will know whether this is for you and can then decide whether to become a club member. For the first season, new bowlers will have their own leagues so that they start on a level footing and not be overwhelmed by those who have been at it for years. The main season begins mid-September through to mid-April. During this time, we run 19 internal leagues as well as enjoying weekend friendly fixtures with other clubs. We also run 9 individual competitions on a knock-out basis throughout the season.. Bowling sessions are for 2 hours 15 minutes and begin at 9.30am, 11.45am, 2.00pm, and 4.30pm, as well as with
evening sessions at 7.00pm. In addition to all these, there are daily opportunities to book a rink for extra practice and training etc. There is also a social side to the club with events, usually on Saturday nights, including Quiz Nights, Beetle Drives, Bingo and Barbecues in the summer, when we run a limited programme according to demand. We have a fully licenced bar together with a good range of hot drinks from our in-house dispenser. With over 260 members, we are probably the biggest sports club in Whittlesey and are well known to be a very friendly bunch! Why not give it a try? If you wish, you can come and have a preview beforehand any Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 9.30am, or a Friday evening from 7.00pm. Introduce yourselves and see the rinks in full swing.

In addition, Richard runs a one-day Wedding Skills course with live models as the bride and groom, for those intending to photograph weddings this year. The next course is on Saturday 17 September at 9:30am.
The next weekly photo training courses start on Saturday 1st October at 10am and run for six weeks, with prices starting from just £17 per session. Richard is also holding a Photo Exhibition of Student work on 24-25 September which will display a variety of incredible photographs taken by many of his students over recent years and is free entry.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to personal circumstances, Mark Laws has left the practice and following this change, we have reverted back to our previous name of Bird & Co. Question I am self employed and was paying my Class 2 NIC by direct debit, but HMRC have not collected any contributions from me since July 2015. Why is this? Answer Previously the self employed paid Class 2 NIC six monthly or paid by monthly direct debit. Both of these methods have been replaced with a single annual calculation as part of your SA tax return. This already happens with your Class 4 national insurance. The SA will work out how much you need to pay for the year, based on the information you provide in your SA return. Also, if you are under the small profits threshold (currently £5,965 for 2016/17) you will have the option to voluntarily pay the Class 2 NIC (currently £2.80 per week for 2016/17) in order to protect certain benefits and your State Pension.
Personal Tax Account As part of the governments vision to modernise the tax system new personal tax accounts are being introduced to eventually replace tax returns. The system of online accounts will be similar to online banking, HMRC says. The new accounts will allow people to see their tax details and make payments at any time of the day or year. HMRC’s aim is that by 2020 the new digital accounts will encompass all taxpayers, individual or corporate. Businesses including the selfemployed and landlords will, from April 2018, have to update HMRC every quarter where this activity is their main source of income, but some are saying this could be delayed as the UK have voted to leave European Union. There will be also be an obligation to report quarterly where there is a secondary source of income worth more than £10,000 and the main income is from employment or from a pension. You will be able to use your personal tax account to: • check your income tax estimate and tax code • fill in, send and view a personal tax return • claim a tax refund • check and manage your tax credits • check your State Pension • track tax forms that you’ve submitted online • check or update your Marriage Allowance • tell HMRC about a change of address • check or update benefits you get from work, eg company car details and medical insurance More services will be added in the future.

SHOW TIME We will rock you Sawtry Village Academy’s summer production was We Will Rock You! After months of rehearsals and hard work from many students and staff at the Academy, we produced a fantastic show, with ticket sales reaching an all-time high in the Academy’s history.

he opening night on Monday 4 July was a huge success with each show improving day after day. After four performances each student involved felt a huge sense of achievement which is the outcome of hard work and determination in creating a show. We Will Rock You was the first show for which the Academy used an online ticket booking system, which falls in line with the Academy’s aim to use technology to aid education and streamlining. For us, this meant a wider audience due to the increased accessibility and ease of use. All years from 7-11 had a huge part to play in the production of the show and we could not have done it without the help of some very kind and generous staff within the Academy. So, a huge thank you to Ms Chilvers, who directed the production, and all the staff involved in putting on the show. Lastly, we would like to thank you as the audience for allowing us to exhibit some of the core values of the Academy Trust, in putting on a show like this, which has enabled young minds grow, given positions of trust and authority, giving students more than just GCSEs at the end of their time at Sawtry – a fundamental initiative of the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust.

Yaxley rugby edges closer to its launch. The village has always lacked a rugby club to add to its portfolio of successful sports teams but that is about to change.
ocal side Peterborough Rugby Club has agreed to the Yaks being a satellite club in a deal which will initially see touch rugby played in the village. The long term vision is to provide quality players to the senior club via a pathway. However, the club will include all members of the community in coaching and touch rugby. Families can play as a team in the six a side format of the game as it is not limited to age (subject to a minimum) or sex. It’s a great way to get involved, have fun and be healthy. The club is close to agreeing funding and a regular venue and has launched the Yaxley Rugby Facebook page for people interested in playing and volunteering to get in touch.

10 things you might not know about wasps... Wasps… The very word tends to cause an involuntary shudder in most people. Unlike bees, you won’t see any charities asking you to do your bit to save them. Most species don’t pollinate plants and many of us have been stung by a wasp at one point, so it’s easy to dismiss them as just a pointless nuisance. And yet, dig a little deeper and they’re actually quite fascinating creatures. • There are thousands of different species of wasps, from the Common Wasp that targets our summer picnics, to the more unusual RubyTailed Wasp. • The Asian Giant Hornet can reach 5cm in length. (Imagine one of those attacking your jam sandwich.) • While some live in colonies, just like bees, other species are solitary, and rather anti-social. • They’re predatory. The adult female of some species will actually lay its eggs on the larvae of another insect, or inside an adult insect. Once hatched, the wasp larvae will eat its host. • The adult wasp captures and paralyses insects to feed to its growing larvae. • While the above sounds rather unpleasant, it does have its advantages for humans, as wasps can help to control many of the insects that plague our crops. Some farmers actively encourage wasps for this reason. In Brazil, for example, sugarcane farmers buy parasitic wasps in order to kill a particular moth known as the Sugarcane Borer. • While we think of wasps as yellow and black, they do come in other colours, including red, blue and green, and pure black. • Social wasps make their nests by chewing up bits of wood and making a substance with it that’s very similar to paper. • Up to 10,000 wasps can live in one nest. • An old wasp nest won’t be used by a new queen, so they’re usually only inhabited for one year. Fascinating though they may be, most of us would still rather not have a wasp nest in our house or garden. You can get insecticides to try to kill the wasps yourself, but it’s rather more sensible to call in the experts. Try your local council first, as many provide pest control services. If yours doesn’t, search online or in the Yellow Pages for pest control companies. If you’d rather not kill the wasps, there are humane ways to move the nest or encourage them to vacate it, but they’re not fool proof and you will need to take precautions to avoid getting stung. Before doing anything, do make sure that they’re wasps, rather than bees. A bee colony is usually safe to leave where it is, but if you want it moved, your local beekeeping association should be able to help.

Have you ever had a holiday ruined because of over-exposure to the sun?
I have. It was 2007 and I was in Mauritius. I’d been snorkelling, fascinated by the marine life I was observing, oblivious to the sun beating down on me. Once on dry land, my back started to blister and I developed oozing sores that needed medical treatment. Sun-starved as we are in this beautiful, verdant land of ours, it is easy to overdo it in the brilliant white sunshine of foreign holiday destinations, and sun burn is just one condition we may suffer from. Prevention is always better than cure, so here are a couple of tips to keep your holiday happy and carefree! First, try and limit exposure to the sun during the hottest hours (around 12pm-3pm) and apply sun screen liberally 30 minutes before going out. Dress in T shirts instead of strappy vests and wear a cap or hat. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and be sure to carry bottles of water with you when outside. To avoid dehydration, the body needs to take in more fluids than it expels. A fall in water and salt levels can result in nausea, faintness and heavy sweating. So, have fun in the sun this summer but don’t come back over cooked!

Is your neighbour’s greenery making you see red? Marking out a boundary, creating a screen to cover a fence or wall, or part of your own garden – tall trees and high hedges can sometimes cause problems between neighbours.

omplaints of overhanging branches, conifers blocking out the light or unwelcomed falling leaves in the garden are all too common, and if left to escalate, may create ill feeling between the two parties. There is lots of advice available if you find yourself in a situation where greenery is making you see red! Make sure you remain calm when dealing with your neighbour and familiarise yourself with the law surrounding tackling overhanging branches and trees. Try and talk through the problem in the first instance. If your property shares a boundary with a neighbour’s property, there are a few aspects of the law (and good neighbourliness) to bear in mind when growing trees/hedges. Here’s a quick run through: You have a common law right to cut back tree branches that overhang onto your property. It’s best to talk to your neighbour about any trees / hedges you wish to cut back before doing so. The law states that any branches cut off belong to the person on whose land the tree originally grew, so you should ask your neighbour if they want them back, or if they are happy for you to dispose of them. Don’t just throw trimmings back over the boundary - this could constitute ‘fly tipping’. Ask your neighbour whether they would like any trimmings back. When it comes to fruit on trees, even if they are growing on branches which overhang your property, the fruit still belongs to your neighbour. You are therefore effectively stealing if you pick these for yourself without your neighbour’s permission.
Be careful to check if any trees are subject to a preservation order - your local authority will be able to tell you this. If you cut down a tree with a preservation order, you will be guilty of an offence under section 210 or 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. A tree belongs to whoever owns the property upon which the tree trunk originally grows, even if the branches or roots have begun to spread onto another property. The owner has a duty to maintain this tree so that it does not cause a hazard. Therefore if branches are broken and hanging precariously, the owner should remove these. Finally, if you choose to cut down overhanging branches, or trim trees, you will have to pay for the cost of doing so yourself. Try speaking to your neighbour however as you may be able to reach some sort of agreement in relation to any gardening work required, though they are not obliged to contribute to this cost. You are not entitled to access your neighbour’s property to enable you trim the branches on your side of the boundary without their permission. If you are considering this cause of action – or even have trees on your own property which need attention – it may pay to call in the experts if the project is something you don’t feel able to confident to tackle yourself. Parking has again been raised as an issue especially outside of the doctors and also along Daimler Avenue near to Fourfields School. A few suggestions have been made to help with these issues. The Parish Council have already agreed with the school to allow Queens Park to be used for dropping children off in safety and to make the road a lot safer for traffic. The NHW team are looking at getting funding for signage
to help let people know that this available. We have also contacted the doctors, who have advised they are unfortunately unable to provide any more disabled parking spaces in their car park, however they will highlight that those spaces are available and ask patients to consider others whilst parking. This month alone will make or break our farm. A poor yield can devastate, and even with a good yield, poor market prices could leave us with nowhere to go when the bank manager calls.

I
t’s all our pay cheques at once, with the added pressure that it may add up to nothing. The days are long, often running after midnight with many farmers working longer than most people are awake, but it feels good to work hard, and to be bringing in the crop. In some years harvest is a joyful experience, but this year, with global prices low despite post-Brexit vote exchange rate movements, and with the unusually warm winter doing nothing to slow aphids, slugs, disease, and competitive weeds, we’re hoping to simply keep going. Every year, for some farmers, harvest is the final straw, and selling up, letting out, or completely changing the business is the result. Despite this pressure, August is an exciting month. Perched high up in the combine, I see the full harvest pass beneath my feet. I measure the effects of disease, flood, pest, and my own mismanagement, and I further hone (or perhaps completely change) my farming plan for the next year. I also see our wildlife for the first time since nature’s spring flush gave shade and protection to our more cautious neighbours. Will our roe deer, resident in
the back field, have weaned another fawn this year? What damage have the badgers caused in the crops? Have we fledged any broods of the rare English partridge? Have the rabbits made like rabbits, or has myxomatosis struck their population (I saw the first rabbit for some years infected just a fortnight ago)? On the roads, harvest traffic merges with holidaymakers, and we get impatient ‘stuck behind another tractor’. On our farm, and many others locally, we encourage our drivers to pull over if there are cars queuing behind them for more than a few minutes, but the same tractor drivers are most likely hurrying back to the field to the impatient combine drivers (me) with tanks full of grain, lights flashing, hurriedly trying to get the field finished before the weather changes, and the crop is lost or damaged. They’ll be working long days under pressure, so do show the tractor boys and girls some love on the roads this August, and I apologise in advance for any delays we may cause. Like everyone, we hope the sun is shining this month, and whilst there’s not a sniff of any time off from the farm, I wish those of you taking well-earned summer breaks, a very happy time.

We have had a wonderful half term with our very own hungry caterpillars. Every child was given their own caterpillar to look after at home. Many gave theirs a name, and introduced them to Nanny, Granddad, Aunty, Uncle, Cousins and friends. As soon as they turned into a chrysalis the children brought them back to preschool and we placed them all in our giant net. After a few days we watched as they carefully fluttered out of their chrysalis and turned into beautiful butterflies. The first one to leave us was named Folksworth by the children. As we released him he landed on a few heads before fluttering off to the many gardens in the village to say hello to all of our lovely children. Over the past few days Folksworth's friends have been released to join him. At Yaxley Infant School each year group selects a charity to support each term and plans how to fundraise for their chosen cause. This helps the children to develop enterprise skills along with a sense of economic well being and moral purpose. Our Year One children have once again been thinking about their enterprise skills. They thought hard about which charity to choose and after a secret vote the chosen charity was “The Dogs Trust”. The next stage was to decide how to raise the money. They came up with some great ideas, all on a doggy theme- from making and selling dog collars to dog biscuits. However, the one that was most popular was an art and craft afternoon, where we would charge the adults to come and have fun with their

books at school when they all look the same as everyone else’s. 4. Familiarity with the route to school can also help, maybe walking your route or from where you will park the car and discussing how lovely the surroundings look and how much fun will be had. 5. Practising independence will help your child and build confidence whether getting dressed and undressed which supports them when they start PE lessons, to using cutlery or independently opening packed lunches to going to the toilet on their own and cleaning afterwards. 6. Finally, a lot of the EYFS curriculum rests on a children’s ability to discuss their thoughts and things they notice. As their first year in Reception follows this it is worth working on conversations with your child to encourage them to respond in sentences rather than one word.

They decided on a range of activities that they thought they (and their grown ups!) would enjoy. These ranged from making puppets from paper bags, using paper plates to create a dog’s face, creating a concertina sausage dog and baking and decorating dog and bone shaped biscuits. The day before, the children got busy baking the biscuits in preparation and the grown ups in school grabbed as many glue sticks, scissors and googly eyes as
we could find. Finally, our afternoon came and soon the hall was full of children and adults busily trying to work out how to follow the complicated cutting patterns for concertina sausage dogs or covering biscuits in icing and working out how to get as many sprinkles onto one biscuit as possible. We all had a lovely afternoon and when the children counted the donations Year One were very pleased to discover that they had so far raised £56.65. That will buy a lot of dog food!

Stretton Pre School
With the end of the school year fast approaching, the children have had a number of successes to enjoy. The A1 schools athletics competition was held at the Peterborough athletics track on 1 July 1. As the morning began and all the schools started to arrive, Fourfields were hoping to defend their hard-earned title from 2015 and the team of children were buzzing with anticipation. Children from all schools that competed in the event put on a fantastic performance. Great sportsmanship was shown by all and every child received brilliant support from the crowd. After a hard morning of competition, Fourfields were crowned champions for the second year in a row. Hot on the heels of the A1 success, Fourfields entered a team in to the Stanground swimming gala. Not to be outdone by the athletics team, the Fourfields swimming team also came away with a victory in the pool. The cricket team also
competed in the county finals after winning the Peterborough tournament. July also saw the annual Summer Fayre. This year, the event was combined with the Fourfields Farmers Market to make an even bigger occasion. Each year group designed and made their own food and goods to sell on the day (ranging from fabulous flapjacks to toy rabbits). Other popular events included the cake making competition, children’s petting zoo, a life size tractor made of straw and wonderful food provided by local businesses. This month also sees the year 6 children leave Fourfields to move on to the next stage in their school lives. All the staff at Fourfields wish the children all the best as they move on to Stanground, Hampton and Sawtry.
The Stretton Pre-School Summer Fete took place on 26th June 2016. We had a large number of stalls selling all sorts of different products, a bouncy castle, children’s swings and an ice cream van. We organised a tombola along with a second hand book and toy stall and invited adults to take a chance with our Water or Wine competition. Our kitchen was busy making toasted sandwiches and sausage rolls which were a huge hit! We ran free craft activities for the children, who also had the opportunity to choose a new name for teddy that had forgotten his name and take part in our lucky dip. The event was extremely well attended by children
Holme Pre School A huge amount of fun was had by children, parents and staff last month when they were greeted with a surprise visit from Batman and Spiderman for their Superhero Father’s Day celebration (a huge Thank you to Simply Superheros for making the children’s day). Having parents and family involved in the child’s time at pre-school is a what makes Holme Pre-school so loved, the children feel so excited and proud to be have their parent’s their for special days and can’t wait to show them around. We are taking bookings for September 2016 sessions onwards and we can now offer parents the option of longer full day sessions (8:30am5:30pm Mon-Wed) to help those returning to work along side our traditional Pre-school hours of 9am-3pm. At Holme Village Pre-school we pride ourselves in offering a small and personal
setting for children aged 2, 3 and 4 years old. Where outdoor learning is at the core of the Preschool and every child is valued and recognised as having a voice. We are registered for both the 3+ and 4+ nursery education grant scheme which entitles you to 15 hours FREE per week per child in pre-school settings. We are also registered for funded two year olds should the families qualify.

Neutering Part 4

As you’ve read in our previous articles, neutering our pets has many benefits for their health, behaviour, safety and the pet population. The benefits are true for male cats too. Here we highlight a few specific risks for our feline fellas.
ntire (un-neutered) male cats’ lives are ruled by finding as many mates as possible and patrolling their territory. They will establish a territory around their home and will mark it regularly by spraying their very pungent urine (much smellier than a neutered cats urine) and they can even do this in your house! Their home territory is often larger than their neutered counterparts’ and can extend for miles, but they will also venture even further in search of a mate. This wandering means they will most likely have to cross more roads, increasing the chance of being involved in a road traffic accident. Or they can even get lost on their travels and not find their way home. Tomcats will defend their territory and enforce their dominance over other cats by fighting that can cause terrible injuries, wounds and even abscesses, which may need extensive medical treatment. They are also at high risk of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), which is the cat equivalent
of HIV/AIDS. The virus depletes the white blood cells and over time will make the cat less able to fight off infection. FIV is a slow acting virus and infected cats can live normal lifestyles, albeit needing extra support if they catch an infection (which is more likely with entire males given their tendency to fight). It is nonetheless a virus and one we need to control the spread of in the country’s cat population. This lifestyle of fighting and roaming leaves little room for you and you may find they offer less than neutered individuals in the way of companionship. Castrating (neutering) a male cat is a very straightforward and affordable procedure. A vet will complete the surgery in around 30 minutes and the cat will be back to himself within a few hours (once they recover from the anaesthetic). Believe it or not they don’t even need stitches – the incision is so small and the body heals much better without the interference.
