Yaxley Parish Council Dog Mess If we are a nation of dog lovers and have a strong respect for everyone's safety, why is it that some dog owners allow man’s best friend to be declared a blight on society? We seem to go round in cycles, where more people accept responsibility for owning their pet by bagging and binning the waste, then there are still the few who spoil it for the many and fail to clean up or might bag it but hang it in trees and bushes! Failing to clean up is not only unsightly but also a health hazard for other pets and humans alike; it’s the biggest complaint we receive. Therefore, we have asked for Hunts DC dog warden to check specific areas and take legal action in certain cases to help make our neighbourhood safe and clean. Feeling wild? Take the wildlife challenge – commit to Random Acts of Wildness during June...

Draw a tree, collect beautiful stones, look up the Latin name of a bird or plant, make a plaintive tune through a piece of grass, thread a daisy chain – there are many simple and pleasing ways to connect to nature. As part of their My Wild Life campaign as a way of engaging more meaningfully with nature and wildlife, the Wildlife Trust in Cambridgeshire are encouraging a daily activity or action during the month of June. 30 Days Wild involves selecting and doing 'Random Acts of Wildness' each day in June – and for anyone registering in advance during April and May there are posters, leaflets, wall charts and stickers available to help bring inspiration. Looking to keep things effective yet simple, it can be a sociable time to share the wildness with family, friends and colleagues and list/choose favourite wild things. It's well known that experiencing the benefits of being outside can effect the lowering of stress and anxiety, boost motivation, improve mood improving plus bring about increased human connections. It doesn't have to involve going deep into the wild - a park, botanical gardens, your own back garden if you have one, or a neighbourhood with trees. Nature is always all around and participating in this challenge will help you to become more aware of it, no matter where you are. Following a request from Yaxley residents, Paul Cole, a coordinator for Speed Watch made a presentation to the Council of the benefits and improvements gained by this safety initiative. The scheme allows members of the public to actively get involved in monitoring the speed of vehicles in their own neighbourhood. If you are interested and able to commit time, please give

Volunteer for a better Yaxley There is shortage of volunteers in the Yaxley area. Shape your community for the better by helping older people live happy, healthy and independent lives. Even with just a few hours a month, there are flexible roles to suit you ... • Offer practical and emotional help to local people after an illness or stay in hospital. Help at Home volunteers offer support (usually for 3 weeks) by: collecting prescriptions, shopping, meal deliveries or just having a chat and making sure people are ok. You could also help with oneoff tasks such as changing a light bulb or taking curtains down for a wash. • Support older people to find services and activities to help them stay connected with their community. Community Navigators volunteers find information about anything from social activities to services that help people stay independent at home, e.g. gardeners and cleaners. • Get involved with a local community group by working with the Community Development team to meet a particular need? You could start or get involved in anything from car schemes to lunch clubs and singing groups. You could make a big difference!

Great Haddon update On 9 March, Peterborough City Council’s Planning Committee approved an outline planning application to build over six hundred houses and a primary school on land previously earmarked, in their Core Strategy, for Employment (Great Haddon). Objectors addressing the Planning Committee said that they objected, not to the change of use to residential and the potential loss of jobs, but to the houses being built in isolation. The plans did not include provision for any future facilities such as a shop, public transport, doctors, cafe, etc, all the things we take for granted. With no plans to start Great Haddon in the near future, there would be more pressure on those services in the surrounding areas. The outline application did not allow for discussion of the proposed road network both within the development or points of entry/exit. The issues surrounding use of the Great North Road (an unlit National cycleway without pavements) and potential problems at its junction with the A15 have been long-standing concerns. The planners confidently predict that southbound-travelling residents will first travel north through the industrial area to the Parkway. Secondary school children will be directed to the schools at Orton. Children would walk or cycle through the warehousing area (with HGV's) along the path to the footbridge over A1139 and on to Orton schools. Only three days after these houses were approved, there is news that Roxhill have submitted an application for a 24m high building (normal height is15m) on plot E111, close to the houses. It is for a 750,000 square feet national distribution centre.

Police update With lighter nights and better weather approaching, sheds and gardening equipment are now starting to be used after the winter months. Please be vigilant with tools and lawnmowers after use, locking the sheds or garages where they are kept. Opportunists will take advantage of tools and equipment left unattended, and any unlocked storage areas. The team have been visiting the Sawtry Youth Group, engaging with youths and staff at the location. Visits have been well received and we look forward to future engagement, especially as the light nights are now approaching. Patrols of Laburnum Avenue have been, and are continuing to be conducted, with some residents reporting youths congregating around the flats in the evenings. Street surveys have been carried out, with Luminus Housing and the local residents. No new reports have been received. We will be attending a Street Focus event with Luminus Housing in Laburnum Avenue and look forward to meeting you at this on 30 March between 10.30am-12noon.

Question: We have re-mortgaged our residential property to buy another property to let. Can we claim the additional interest on the mortgage of our main property against the rental income? Answer: If a loan is taken out to purchase a rental property the interest on that loan is an allowable expense. It is irrelevant that the security for the loan is your personal home – what is important is what the funds are used for. So if the funds are used for the property business, then yes the interest is allowable. Tax Relief on a Gift: Are you a business owner? If you are looking for a special gift to give to someone like your loved one, but are not excited by flowers or chocolates, consider spoiling them with a gift of something (other than food, drink, tobacco or a gift voucher) bearing a conspicuous advertisement for your business. A tax deduction may be available if the cost of the gift does not exceed £50. If that special person is an employee of the business, an employment income charge may arise, so take advice. However, legislation is being introduced to provide a tax exemption for qualifying benefits-in-kind costing less than £50.

HAT Club

16 members of HAT Club met on Wednesday 9 March at Holme Village Hall where Alan Bowley gave a most interesting presentation about his travels around Alaska. We discovered that this state is a fifth of the size of the USA, has 70 potentially active volcanoes, has the greatest number of glaciers and ice fields in the world (which are gradually shrinking) and has very few roads. There are over 13 different native tribal groups and a great variety of wildlife. These include Stella sea lions, sea otters, mousse, bears, salmon, various whales and bald eagles, to name a few. Alan showed us fascinating photographs he had taken of these and some of us are considering Alaska as our next holiday destination. This was followed by an afternoon tea. At the next meeting on Wednesday 13 April, Barbara Lawes will talk about some of the islands of the South Pacific and the people she has worked with there. Please could members let anyone on the Committee know if they are not able to attend meetings, in order for us to more accurately reflect numbers for catering purposes. Holme WI At our meeting in March our speaker, a retired police officer, spoke about the work he does with Tear Fund. This is a Christian organisation that helps people around the word to be able to help themselves. They give them seeds to grow crops and show them how to care for the plants, also the equipment, tools and knowhow to build their own schools, and to dig wells for their own water supply. A very informative talk. Next month we meet on Thursday 7 April, 7.30pm, at Holme village hall, when our speaker will be talking about yoga and giving us a demonstration. Why not come along and give it a try?

Yaxley WI We were delighted to welcome several visitors at our February meeting, where our speaker was Madge Cole, a Chelsea Pensioner. Madge gave a very interesting talk about her life in the army before she had to leave due to back problems, and in later years she nursed both her sister and mother. After being left alone she applied to join the Chelsea Pensioners and became one of only 11 women amongst

290 men! Madge said that it was like being welcomed into a large family and she hasn't looked back since. She brought along several photos of her meetings with well known people, including Prince Harry, and she hopes in the future that she will also meet Prince William! Madge kindly allowed anyone to try on her lovely scarlet coat and several of us had photos taken with her. It was a pleasure to meet such a happy, contented lady. In March, one of our members, Pauline Salmon, enthusiastically proved the point of not discarding anything by demonstrating some lovely Easter crafts from items she had laying around at home. We saw a delightful bunny bunting and different card designs. I am sure that some of us will be having a go at home. Our demonstration was followed by a cake auction by our very own member auctioneer, Phyllis Black. Our meeting on 14 April at the Lancaster Club at 7.30pm will be a talk on 'Heritage of Yaxley' by Stuart Howe, Sally Howell & Margaret Long. Visitors are very welcome.

Photous winners Here are the winners of the recent 'Introduction to Digital Cameras’, ‘Intermediate' and 'Advanced 2' photo training courses, which were held at studios in Farcet. The latest winner of the 'Introduction to Digital Cameras' photo course, run by Richard Houghton of Photous Photography in Main Street Farcet, was Mandy Wright from Whittlesey. St Peter's Church I wonder if you’ve got a favourite story? Perhaps a story you remember being read to you as a child? Perhaps a story that brings to mind memories of a particular time in your life? Stories are powerful. They can make us smile and they can make us cry. They can put a swing in our step or leave us poignantly reflecting. They can even change the way we think about our lives or about other people. Stories don’t always provide us with answers, but the images, the thoughts and the feelings they evoke can shape how we understand the world. There is an old saying I like that ‘God created humans because God loves stories’. I wonder if you have ever thought of your life as part of a story? Despite common misconceptions, the bible is not primarily a book of rules nor is it simply a book of factual information. Rather, it is the story of God’s interaction with people throughout history. Stretching deep into the past and looking longingly to the future, it tells a narrative of a God intimately involved in human life with all its joys and struggles, its messiness and its hopes. A story that far from leaving us passive observers actually calls us to participate in the story it continues to tell. In April, we are starting a new group at St Peter’s Church called Encounter which will provide a space to explore our own lives alongside the Christian narrative; to see our stories in the light of God’s story. You do not have to be a Christian, attend a church or even have read the bible to come along and it is ideally suited for those who want to think more about life, faith and spirituality in an informal environment. It is a place where all stories are valuable, all questions are valid and there will be absolutely no jargon. Beginning on Friday 15 April, Encounter will meet on alternate Friday mornings at St Peter’s Church. Tea, coffee and pastries will be served from 9.15am. A short, thought-provoking DVD will be shown at 10am followed by time to ponder, discuss and reflect. There is no charge and a creche will be provided if you wish to attend with young children. Bowls Club Hard work and preparation pays off, and that was certainly the case for our Annual Presentation Night at Yaxley Football Club; a well organised an enjoyable night was had by all. Along with the usual competition winners, this year, for the very first time, a special award was presented for ‘Clubman of the Year’, a trophy for someone who goes that extra step to help others and is well respected by the club members. The inaugural winner of this trophy was Jack Scurfield, pictured above with Karen Martin who presented all the prizes this year. During the winter season, some of our members move indoors to play. As the outdoor summer season approaches the indoor season is coming to a close. The County National Bowling Federation indoor finals were held on Sunday 13 March. Joan Robinson from our club, was successful in winning the Ladies 4-bowl final 21-18 against Chris Ford, and followed that up with a 21-8 win in the Ladies Senior singles against Shirley Suffling. Well done Joan, keep that form up for outdoors! To keep the club going in the winter months, our social committee work tirelessly organising events such as Christmas parties, Whist & Beetle drives, Quizzes and just last week an Easter Fayre; our thanks go out to all those organisers and helpers that keep the club together. Finally, don’t forget that if you’re interested in joining the club and playing bowls please come along to one of our Saturday morning friendly ‘Roll-ups’ and have a go. Holme Parish Council The Council met on 15 March. 'Clean for the Queen' was a great success and will be repeated in October. The 1940s weekend (1 and 2 October) road closures were agreed and the organisers will attend the next meeting to explain the parking and traffic arrangements. Councillors discussed the future sale of Crown farmland around Holme and has set up correspondence with the agents. Parking in Holme (at the school) is still an issue and police have now been asked to help. Dog mess in the Fen Nature Reserve is a hot topic and the council is working with the Great Fen Project and Natural England to find a long

his small shop has been hand crafted to suit all your pet care needs and is always welcoming new furry friends in which we can share this journey with. To us the pets we welcome into our shop are like our adopted animals, forming a bond that every single one of us in the shop treasures. (also the pets love it because they get plenty of treats). But let me share with you some of the history behind the shop to catch you up with how we got here today… On 1 March1976, David Sanders set up a small business, with help from wife Angela. He could see a need for a pet shop in the village and had an understanding of animal welfare, so, he decided to put the two together and create the business, “D & A Sanders Pet Shop”.

The shop does everything from nutrition to doggy loving treats, but one thing that is continuous is the passion that flows behind everyone in the shop for the care of your animals. This business caters for all your pet needs and is always happy to give any advice or tricks of the trade we have learnt along the way. As some of you may know David suffered a heart attack a few years ago, and still carried on running the pet shop with the support of his family members and close friends. But due to further complications and that inevitable battle we all face (age) he has decided to retire from running the business. However, for those of you who know him well, that doesn’t stop him. His daughter Katherine has taken over the business and is still working alongside David to

keep the shop going. Although some things may change over the years, such as a new counter or new displays the same love and care is still provided by the staff at D & A Sanders. David’s granddaughter Shannon also participates in running the shop along with staff members, Louie Cooper and Patricia Reynolds. We would like to take this opportunity to thank every single one of you who have supported us over the years, especially when we as a family went through difficult times. It really brings out the love the community has for my grandad and I am so proud of the work he has completed, and we couldn’t have done it without your support. Hampton Gardens Secondary School Opening September 2017 Hampton Gardens School will open to Year 7 students in September 2017. The school is currently under construction and is located in between Yaxley and Hampton on a plot to the east of the A15.

OUTSTANDING FACILITIES The state of the art school buildings and grounds include the following design features: • A full size, floodlit, 3G, all-weather pitch, suitable for a range of sports. • An auditorium for performances and assemblies, with retractable seating. • A stunning, double height library/learning resource centre at the heart of the school. • An exceptionally well-equipped science department, including show laboratories for regional events. • An outside amphitheatre and attractively landscaped grounds for sport and for students to enjoy at break and lunchtimes.

Who is the school for? The school is being built for Yaxley residents and for children residing in the new housing being built on the Hampton East development. The school becomes the official catchment school for Yaxley residents from September 2017. This means the current Year 5 will be the first year group to go to the school. The Trust will go out to consultation on the exact admissions criteria for the school later on in 2016, however, it is expected that Yaxley residents will be given priority in the admissions criteria. In the longer term the catchment will be defined as Yaxley and specific new parts of Hampton. However, in the earlier years there is likely to be an overarching Hampton catchment area.

Free School Hampton Gardens School was successful in its application to become a Free School. This has meant that the Hampton Academies Trust has secured central government funding to build the school and is supported by a team at the Department for Education (DfE) in its pre-opening preparation. The Trust is working with the DfE to ensure that the educational offer at the school will meet the needs of local students and will support them in gaining a range of

qualifications. It is the aspiration of the Trust that Hampton Gardens will be judged as an Outstanding school by Ofsted and, as a Free School, it will have a pre-opening readiness visit from Ofsted prior to September 2017.

Partnerships The school is being built in an innovative partnership between the Hampton Academies Trust, the Free Schools team at the DfE and Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council. Both local authorities have been active in driving forward the case to establish the new school, to ensure that the locality has sufficient school places over the next 20 years. The school will also work in close association with Hampton College, the Trust’s existing academy. Hampton College and Hampton Gardens schools will be able to share staff and facilities to enhance the experience of learners at both schools.

Staggered intake The school will have a staggered intake to take account of the growth in new housing in the local area and will gradually grow to be able to accommodate 1500 learners by the mid 2020s. In 2017 the school will admit up to 180 Year 7 students, 210 Year 7 students in 2018 and reaching its year group capacity of 240 for Year 7 in 2019.

Sixth form There will be a joint sixth form offer across Hampton Gardens and Hampton College, allowing learners from both schools to choose from a wider range of high quality post 16 courses. The Trust has been able to ensure that facilities at the new school do not just replicate those of Hampton College, but also provide new learning facilities for young people in the area. For example, Hampton Gardens school will have a room equipped to offer catering courses. A shared sixth form will mean that the range of A level subjects on offer can be broadened, in addition to providing an enhanced vocational offer across the schools. Hampton Gardens will have a purpose built sixth form study area, located on the top floor, providing stunning views across the school field and across to Hampton.

As a successful school it was approved by the Department of Education to form its own multi-academy trust. Hampton Academies Trust is effectively the same team who lead and govern Hampton College.

Hampton Gardens School will have its own full time Head of School (day to day Headteacher). The Trust is looking to appoint a talented leader to be in post by early 2017, to ensure that everything is ready for September. They look forward to announcing the appointment on their website and through social media. There will be a number of opportunities for parents and children to meet the new Head of School prior to opening. Helen Price is the Executive Headteacher across the trust and will support the Head of School as part of the trust structure. Helen has been at Hampton College since the school opened in 2005 and became Headteacher in 2011. The school will have its own local governing body, including parental representation. Overall responsibility for the school will rest with the Hampton Academies Trust.

What is the vision for the new school? The vision is to create a school that shares a number of common features with Hampton College but which will also have its own distinct identity. Three key priorities for the school are that it should be: • A high performing school with strong results. • An inclusive school which meets the needs of all learners in the locality. • A school which supports children and young people from all backgrounds to succeed.

Will Hampton Gardens and Hampton College work together? Yes. The Trust believes there is a unique advantage in running two schools in close proximity as they will be able to share staffing and facilities. • Hampton Gardens and Hampton College will have a joint sixth form, enabling the Trust to offer an even broader range of subjects and courses. • The Trust intends to offer some GCSE and/or vocational courses across the two schools for Year 10/Year 11 students. • Together the two schools can offer an even wider range of clubs, educational visits and extra-curricular activities.

Will the school open on time? Yes. Construction started on site in January 2016 and the trust is working closely with the builders, Carillion, to ensure that key milestones are met. In addition to virtual tours on their website, the Trust is hoping to offer pre-opening tours to children and parents before the school opens in autumn 2017.

For the first time Yaxley residents have a dedicated secondary school. From September 2017 Hampton Gardens School becomes the official catchment school for Yaxley children. The admissions criteria (to be published later this year) will give preference to Year 6 children living in the village of Yaxley. The school is supported by the two local authorities of Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. Other children admitted to the new school are expected to come from the new housing being built near to the school and from the wider Hampton/Peterborough area.

FARMING 

Farmer Tom March was a month of devastating extremes; bright sunshine, freezing fogs, and of course that torrential rain which forced the cancellation of Lambing Sunday at Morborne.

hilst I was gutted, I appreciated that parking a thousand cars in a field under three feet of water wasn't going to happen, and it reminds us that farming is at the mercy of the weather. Personally, working outside in all conditions, dealing with flooded fields, and checking the animals during torrential rain is already quite enough of a reminder though, thank you! The floods elsewhere in the UK didn't just inconvenience farming and disrupt the daily commute; houses were flooded, businesses lost, and whole farms were under water. Fortunately a local, Lincolnshire farmer some years ago started 'Forage Aid'- a charity where farmers donate straw, hay, and feed to other farmers who've lost theirs and yet need to continue to look after their animals - and this was called on again to support Cumbrian farmers. I'm a big believer In community, and in tough times it's heartening to see people come together. You'll understand how farmers (and the British in general) seemingly obsess over the weather as it can be incredibly changeable, and impacts our lives. The old country sayings about April often

ring true, and yet 'April showers bring May flowers' seems a little too idyllic for me. Perhaps another 'April weather, rain and sunshine; both together' is closer to reality, however I think the Germans put it best: "April macht was er will" (April does what it wants)! Here on our farm, the late March sunshine will have dried the land and enabled us to to finish our spring drilling of wheat and linseed, and elsewhere sugar beet, and carrots and peas will have been sown...perhaps even in your garden? Spring lambs are still being born through Easter, and the trees and hedgerows are alive with birds pairing off and busily nesting. In the kitchen during April, Jersey Royal new potatoes are fresh from the Channel Islands, and you can enjoy asparagus (my favourite), broccoli, spinach, radishes, and rhubarb which are all grown locally. Lamb is absolutely wonderful at this time of year - don't forget to look for the red tractor symbol and buy British. Whatever you're doing during April, whatever the weather, I hope you get to enjoy our beautiful, vibrant, changeable countryside, and I wish you and your families a very Happy Easter.

Barry’s heartbeat Raising Awareness of High Blood Pressure

In 2012 I lost my husband unexpectedly to a heart attack caused by high blood pressure. The symptoms of high blood pressure are often hard to recognise because they are not obvious and typically don’t present themselves until the condition is severe. If left unchecked it can cause lifethreatening conditions such as heart disease, stroke and kidney failure.

I have attended a couple of craft fairs with my hand-made jewellery stall with all profits going to the British Heart Foundation and I plan to attend more craft fairs this year. The official launch of 'Barry’s Heartbeat' will take place at the Christmas Gift and Craft Fair on Saturday 26 November at The Austin Hall, Main Street, Yaxley. Watch out for more details later. In the meantime, one of Barry’s good friends, Mr Steven Brown (pictured) has agreed to

represent 'Barry’s Heartbeat' by taking part in this years Tour of Cambridgeshire 'Gran Fondo' Cycle Event on Sunday 5 June with all money raised going to the British Heart Foundation. Only in its second year of running, the race attracts riders from all over the country and is run over 80 miles of Fenland terrain on closed roads. Steven has also been accepted onto the Prudential 100 London to Surrey Bike Ride so will be covering a combined total of 180 miles.

Yaxley football club The first teams’ season is winging its way towards conclusion with a mid-table finish likely in the United Counties League Premier Division. Results have been mixed but the last couple of months have seen a sustained improvement in performance and outcomes. Ian Benjamin is a big name manager in non-league football and having been out of the game for a few years, was always going to need some time to get his ideas across to the team and get them playing his way. We are certainly seeing the signs of that work. It has certainly helped that star summer signing Phil Stebbing is back after an injury that saw him unable to make his Cuckoos debut until February. He has scored at better than a goal every two appearances so far and along with skipper Dan Cotton (30 goals and counting this season) is providing the supporters with some excitement during the run in. Elsewhere we have seen the U16s achieve silverware and the U11s make a cup final (still to be

played). It’s hard work keeping up to date with the successes of all the teams around the club but what a decent headache to have! Thoughts are now turning to the end of season “Junior Festival of Football” which is always worth wandering down to see. Off the park we are focusing on the development of the club and there are a number of suggestions and plans in the pipeline. Fourfields Just this week, Fourfields welcomed the builders onto the school site to begin the extension of our Foundation Stage. This work will take place over the next few months with three new classrooms being built to accommodate the growing demand for school places in Yaxley. As with any building project, there is some inevitable disruption to contend with but we are already very excited about the end result and look forward to enjoying the new facilities when they are complete. We thank you for your patience as this building work takes place, particularly on those busy mornings when parking near to the school is at a premium!

Last week saw the return of our Year 4 children from our annual residential trip to Grafham Water. The range of activities included rock climbing, sailing, canoeing, archery and a gruelling 10 mile bike ride. As is always the case, the children came back with lots of stories to tell and a great deal of pride about their achievements. In particular this year saw many children overcoming their fears, whether it be of water or heights. All the staff have commented that the children really shone as they got stuck into every activity, even if they didn’t believe they could do it at first. That’s the Fourfields’ spirit at work again!

Holme Village PreSchool 40 years ago Holme Village Pre-School was born from a few local mothers who formed a play group for their children in the local village hall. Back then the transport connections to the village were limited, more mothers stayed at home with their children and so the playgroup became an important meeting point and social occasion for the week. The Holme Village Pre-School is now a successful setting as it retains the small family feel which has been one of the main benefits. With a number of the parents of Holme Pre-School and Holme CofE School having younger siblings one of the mums had the idea to go back to the Pre-School roots and start up a baby and toddler group. “After Pre-School and Primary School drop offs I would often find myself talking to other parents in the car park in the cold and one day I thought why don’t we go somewhere that our babies and

Sawtry Village Academy Sawtry Village Academy places a great emphasis on providing students with information, advice and guidance on their transition to the next stage of education, training or employment – and the recent careers event held at the Academy did just this. Running alongside the Year 9 Options event, students from years 8 to 13 recently attended the eleventh consecutive careers event to be held at Sawtry Village Academy. The evening started with an informative assembly for Year 9 parents with regard to GCSE choices, followed by an opportunity to talk to teachers. Students also had the opportunity to interact with the representatives which came to the event. 26 different career information stands provided details on future pathways available, with a wide range of employment providers, training agencies, colleges of further education

and the information services represented. Organisations which were at the event included the Cambridge Universities, Stamford College, Peterborough Regional College, the Services, Police, accountancy and architecture firms, as well as the NHS. Stretton PreSchool In March at both Main Street and Fourfields, the children welcomed their mothers, grannies, aunties and other special ladies in their lives into preschool to share a special Mother’s Day stay and play morning. The children had a great time showing what they do whilst at pre-school and everyone enjoyed a bacon sandwich. We encourage the children to go outside to play every day and recently they found a ladybird whilst they were playing outside. They named him Gaston and decided to build a bug hotel with rooms for Gaston, Lily Ladybird (his mum) and Charlie, the slug! Plans are coming together, both for our stall at the Yaxley Festival, which we are all looking forward to, and also our Summer Fete which is on 26th June 2016. As well as a huge raffle, which was a great success last year we are arranging bouncy castles, slides and inflatables, pony rides, stalls, craft activities, food and drink and much, much, more. Yaxley Infants This year World Book Day at Yaxley Infant School was celebrated with a morning of Story Book Mathematics. Many of our parents and Grandparents came to join us, as teachers led us through a range of mathematics activities based around some of our favourite stories. In Year Two there was a fairy tale theme of Jack and the Beanstalk. The children and visitors then solved number problems using methods such as number lines and the part, part, whole method as well as using a range of mathematical resources. In Year One following the stories of “Just Like Jasper” and “The Enormous Turnip” they were busy with shopping activities and weighing items using lots of mathematical vocabulary. Finally in Foundation Stage they started their morning with the tale of “Barry The Fish With Fingers”. They investigated how they could

make 10 using fish fingers and recorded this as a number sentence. The morning ended with the story of “Whatever Next!” and counting down from 20 to launch their rocket to the moon. It was a fun filled morning and the feedback from our visitors and the children was great. The children said; “We have done maths all morning and it was good!” “I liked doing the weighing with my Mum and Dad” And the visitors said; “It will help me explain the homework” and “It is really useful to see how maths is taught now, as it is so different to when I was at school.”

But how do you choose the right Vet? We believe you should consider a number of points when choosing the best vet for you and your pet. Think of these 5 Cs: 1. Care & Compassion This is one of the most important points. Do you feel comfortable with the veterinary team? Do you feel they will give you and your pet the care and compassion you deserve? 2. Convenience Of course, convenience has to be a factor. Is the surgery close by? How far would you need to travel and will your pet be okay with the journey? Is it easy to park? Can you get an appointment that is convenient for you? Can you get an appointment in the next 24hrs? 3. Continuity A good relationship with your vet is important for you as well as your pet’s medical healthcare (especially when dealing with long-term illnesses). Is it possible for you to see the same vet on each visit if needed? Will the practice accommodate this and give you the continuity of care? 4. Critical Care No matter where you choose, we urge you to make sure that you know what the arrangements are for

out-of-hours and emergency care for your pet. Ensure you know the phone number and more importantly where you’ll need to go. 5. Cost Now for the 'biggie'. It’s true to say that prices among veterinary practices vary somewhat but no matter where you go there are always costs involved in looking after your pet. Remember, you can always ask your vet for an estimate for any treatment and a good vet should always keep you informed of your bill throughout treatments. Ensure you know the payment policy and insurance arrangements with the vets of your choosing. Cost is a source of many misconceptions and misunderstandings about the veterinary profession. If you compare your own medical healthcare to that of your pets; much of the same techniques, training and skills are needed. Surgery can be as complicated and the medication, research and treatment just as varied. Diagnostic tools such as MRI and CT are now available to vets but they are very expensive pieces of equipment to purchase and maintain.

The main difference is that we are lucky enough in this country to have the NHS. It’s hard to judge how much medical care and expertise cost for ourselves; if you hurt your arm how much does it cost the NHS to get a doctor to examine you, run and maintain the machine that takes an x-ray, the radiographer to interpret the x-ray, give you treatment etc? In truth, there is a lot of time, expertise and costs involved in being able to provide you with the medical care you need to get better. It’s the same story in the veterinary world. Sadly, there is no such thing as the NHS for our pets, so the costs of their medical care falls to the pet owner. For this reason we highly recommend insurance, this will give you the peace of mind that your pet will receive the best treatment without the worry of afford-ability. Being a pet owner can be incredibly rewarding, however it is also a huge responsibility and one we encourage everyone to take very seriously. Recently, my wife agreed to do a leaflet drop around Yaxley for our son's preschool. Having delivered to her mum's house and her mum's next door neighbour she found her community spirit sated and asked me to do the other 198. Nevermind, the Beatles' albums are on Spotify, I've brought my good headphones home from work and goodness knows I need the exercise, so I said 'yeah that's fine'. So, off I went one intermittently drizzly Sunday afternoon on my urban ramble, delivering the good word on local preschool facilities. Here are some observations I made on my unexpected journey 1. I hadn't realised, but there are about eight hundred billion houses in Yaxley. This is a remarkable feat of engineering and town planning that this many properties have been built without the need to resort to rising tower blocks. By rights, Yaxley should look like Manhattan. 2. A significant number of the village's population are retired.
