Yaxley Broadway bowls club Great to see the resumption of our Barbecue’s at the hands of two of our up and coming younger members Andrew Black and Andrew Cooper. This was preceded by a Drive, which was won by Stella Dale with Joan Robinson Second and Vivienne Hempsell a well deserved third with Peter White the proud winner of the wooden spoon! Food was cooked to perfection by the two Andrews, ably assisted by old hand John Wiles! (See picture) and followed by our Monster raffle, with generous sponsorship by President Bruce, it just had to be a roaring success! Mick Lewin semi-final safely negotiated against last year’s winners Westward our team enter the final with confidence. Well founded! With many off our members to lend support, after a brilliant performance we now for the first time are the proud holders of this Trophy. Open day, a record turn out with 24 teams vying for the substantial cash prizes, all kept supplied with food and drink by our ladies. With back up by Fred Browning and others. It was great to see Bob Collin back on the scene. Winners of the first prize of £60 was Linda Cree with her team from Deeping, second was Norman Hill’s team who received £30. Federation finals, we had two contestants Kathy Browning and Graham Agger. As any bowler will tell you, it’s all on the day, Kath was unable to find her best form but Graham did and saw himself through to the EBF National Finals at Skegness. More next month. Munday Shield safely through to the final! After an excellent game Robs B team boys just could not find that final shot to clinch the game. Hard luck! Dilley Cup led by our Chairman Graham the A team had an excellent game but were beaten by the narrowest of margins. A. (Tony) Casbon.

Stack fires can quickly spread and not only endanger people and livestock, but also life-long work on farms. Stacks burn very slowly meaning crews are committed for long periods of time, making them unavailable for other emergencies. Don’t forget, many fire-fighters attending incidents like these in rural parts of our county are on-call personnel and their retention at a stack fire impacts directly upon business and services in their community. What can you do? We’re urging residents and those passing through rural areas to keep a careful watch. Do you see someone acting suspiciously around stores of hay or straw? Is there an unusual vehicle near farm buildings? Become a community member of Arson Watch and keep an eye on stacks in your area. Report suspicious activity to police on 101 and dial 999 if you see a stack fire.

A group from St Mary’s church in Farcet began raising awareness and funds over the year in a series of events; teas, concerts, fetes and a stunning Festival of Farcet Weddings.

Community News

St. Mary’s Church 'Virtual bricks' were sold which covered a very large photo of the church taken by Photous Photography. Many local people made donations and local fundraising reached in excess of £6,000! Roy Bradley was tasked with obtaining grants to complete the sum required and English Heritage agreed to support the project through the Heritage Lottery Fund and thankfully covered 75% of the work. The official opening will happen on Sunday 21st September at 10.30 when the Bishop of Ely will lead a Holy Communion service and if you are reading this, you are invited. Another chance to see the repaired building will be on Friday 3rd October when wine and cheese will be served free of charge as a thank you to everyone who helped. The newly restored church had work completed underground and in addition, the walls have been extensively repaired, cracks filled, masonry and plaster repairs done, and the whole interior has been re-painted. The ancient part of the church, the Norman tower area is now clearly visible and interior cleaned to make it easier to appreciate the architectural details of St Mary's. There is still a bit to do and the PCC is working towards showing the interior off to best advantage.

Sunflower Competition

Free guidance

What started at the Yaxley Festival has proved to be a huge success, Yaxley Convenience Store in Broadway Shopping centre announced the competition at the Yaxley Festival in May this year and have been inundated with entries, the competition was open to all children of all ages to see who could grow the tallest sunflower.

for all!

Now everyone can get on with planning for retirement with the one size fits all, free half hour sessions! The Government proposes to offer free guidance on pension choices to answer everyone's retirement confusions. We will all get half an hour free guidance before we make our financial decisions. No one will need financial advice, what would now be the point. After all:

Mike and Lindsey from YCS gave advice to all entries on the best way to grow the sunflower, a cash prize for the winner and a YCS voucher for the parent of the winning child. YCS had a progress board in the shop which was updated regularly and made for some healthy competition! The winning sunflower was 246cm tall and Niamh Kirk aged 9 was the winner.

• We are all going to live exactly 20 years in retirement... • Household bills go down when markets turn against investors - and they stop completely at age 86 • The cost of securing income doesn't change as all insurance companies are the same • The taxpayer will save us if we happen to get things a bit wrong Of course, that is all rubbish.

Well done to all who entered!

Heartstone Financial Services - providing real value Only full advice can drill down to what you need and what really matters to you – helping you to make the right decisions and, more importantly, that your income lasts for as long as you do. Please feel free to contact me on the details below.

When parents separate, what happens to the children? When a couple separate decisions have to be made as to what is best for the children of the family. Ideally parents would reach agreement between themselves, but that is not always possible and sometimes parents need help. There are several ways parents can try to reach an agreement over arrangements for their children such as: Solicitor Negotiation - where each parent instructs a solicitor to enter into negotiations on their behalf in the hope of reaching a mutual agreement; Mediation - where an independent mediator holds a number of meetings with the parents to assist them to agree arrangements directly; Court proceedings - sometimes required to resolve disputes between parents but always considered as the absolute last resort. Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting parents to reach a swift, amicable agreement which protects their own relationship as co-parents for the future but also each parents’ own relationship with the children. For any Family Law queries or information about Family Mediation please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you, with very competitive charging rates.

Electronic cigarettes Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are electrical devices that mimic real cigarettes but using an electronic cigarette or ‘vaping’ as its come to be known, produces a vapour that’s potentially less harmful than tobacco smoke. Many e-cigarettes contain nicotine and, when they do, it’s the vapour that gives the nicotine hit. E-cigarettes are currently not available on the NHS. They are not the same as the inhalator, which is a type of nicotine replacement therapy that is available on the NHS. While e-cigarettes may be safer than convential cigarettes it is still not known what the long term effects of vaping will be on the body.

Electronic cigarettes aren’t currently regulated therefore CAMQUIT (Cambridgeshire’s Stop Smoking Service) cannot recommend their use. CAMQUIT advisors will support anyone that comes to their service looking for support and advice to stop using electronic cigarettes. For more information and help to stop smoking please visit www.camquit.nhs. uk or call 0800 018 4304. Little Acorn pre-school We would like to wish our school leavers all the very best as they continue on their learning journey. They have left us as happy confident little people, and we are very proud of them all. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the parents for their continued support over the years. This month our children have been observing with great interest as our caterpillars turned into cocoons, and then into butterflies. This led on to reading “The Hungry Caterpillar”, and making caterpillars and butterfly pictures. We have also been taking advantage of the summer weather and spending a lot of time outside. Finally we would like to welcome our new families, and we hope that our new children will settle and enjoy their time with us. Chuch News Saint Peters Yaxley Methodist Chapel - A new beginning

In the middle of August an off duty search and rescue dog sniffed out an injured man who had fallen into a ditch near the River Tees. Isla, a border collie, was out for a walk when she suddenly disappeared into dense undergrowth near the river. She started to bark as she would on a mountain search. When her owner followed Isla’s barking he found a confused elderly man with head and chest injuries lying in the ditch. The authorities said that if Isla had not found the gentleman who was far away from well trodden paths then he could easily have been there overnight or longer with presumably fatal consequences. Thank goodness Isla did not realise she was supposed to be off duty. Thank God that he is never off duty either. Whether we are walking on “well trodden paths” or are far away from them God wants to reach out and rescue us all. I for one was a long way from the path of faith around 20 years ago and will be eternally grateful that God came and rescued me.

There are so many changes in our lives in the Autumn. Children starting nursery, school or moving to senior school. Young people starting university or work and in our Chapel a new Minister is arriving. They are all perhaps a little apprehensive, but with support and encouragement they will blossom. We will be welcoming Reverend Gareth and his family at a special service at Southside Church on the 1st September at 7.30am. • Coffee morning with homemade cakes on 13th September from 10 am. • Bible Study on the 9th and 23rd from 7 pm. • Sunday Services and Junior Church start at 10.30 (Communion Service on 14th and Harvest Festival on 28th). Today is not just another day. It’s a new opportunity, another chance, a new beginning. Embrace it!

A group of people who are never off duty are parents – especially parents of young children. I am delighted to say that in response to several requests we are starting a Parenting Course on Friday September 12th. This will run at The Vicarage from 10am to 12 noon and will run fortnightly.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel

The course is primarily intended for parents with children aged from birth to aged 6 but many of the principles also apply to older children and the relationship skills are universal. Please contact me or Ingrid if you would like further details.

All welcome.

THE GREAT FEN The Great Fen has just been awarded the Sandford Award for Heritage Education - a prestigious national award; past winners (2013) include the Giant’s Causeway, Hampton Court Palace and the National Museum of Wales.

The Fen Time Travellers Programme was delivered to Bury School earlier this summer, and was judged and assessed on everything from pre-visit information to delivery of the programme to postvisit follow up information. Fen Time Travellers is an education programme, showing how Living Landscapes can use heritage to engage with and create new audiences, and endorses the excellence of the programmes which the Great Fen and Wildlife Trust Education and Community teams deliver. The programme explores lifestyles through stories, role play and interactive activities on a time trail, becoming part of a ‘Time Team’ and digging for artefacts from bygone days. Lead Judge Christopher Green said: “The Wildlife

Trust Centre at Ramsey Heights has a fantastic story to tell relating to the heritage of this part of the Fens. The classroom, having once been a Victorian brickworks, is in the most magical setting where learners can explore, investigate and interpret how people in this area used to live. Changes in land use are brought alive while delving into the impact of the drainage of the Fens from Roman times to the present day. Fen Time Travellers meet their guide, Billy the Brick-maker, who appears from the dusty brick kiln and invites them on a journey through time to find out about life in times past and to meet characters across the woodland and meadows, all of whom are based on real historical figures. We meet Sybil, the wise woman, who makes potions and medicines from fenland herbs and plants,

and read notes from Willie the Fisherman who helps us catch eels and other wildlife. Heritage abounds in this unique setting, rich in both culture and habitats.” Whether it is den building, pond dipping, bug hunting, creating wild art or meeting historical fen characters, activities at the Great Fen are designed to connect people of all ages to nature and their local heritage through immersion in the natural environment.

The Education and Communities Activities at the Countryside Classroom at Ramsey Heights are supported by BGL Insurance Group, Peterborough.

The Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre has excellent all weather facilities enabling education programmes to run all year round. For more information please see our website www.greatfen.org.uk or call 01487 710420.

In our thoughts by Trudy & Ray

On 25th June 1983 we were blessed with the birth of our third son, Nathan John Brown. At six weeks old Nathan was rushed to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children, and was found to be suffering from a very complex Heart condition (he basically had half of a heart). Nathan was christened in the intensive care unit of Great Ormond Street Hospital on the eve of his first operation 2 days later as the doctors were uncertain whether he would be able to survive the trauma of it. Not so, Nathan was found to be a fighter from that moment for the rest of his all too short life. He fought every obstacle thrown at him with bravery, even from that very early stage. We remember on one occasion, before one of his operations, when he was 5 years old, the doctor came round at night to his bedside and asked him if he had any questions he would like to ask him, typically Nathan said that he did and went on to ask Doctor Rees how much money he earned, to which Doctor Rees quietly replied that he earned far too much, which seemed to be an adequate answer for Nath, and left the nurses laughing. After becoming too old to be under the care of Great Ormond Street Hospital Nath was transferred to the London Heart Hospital, where he continued to undergo operations and treatment.

Yaxley Gazette

Nathan was the most kind, caring, humble, humorous, perfect person with a huge talent for writing both songs, poems and novels, who managed his life to the best of his ability, never once complaining, although sometimes being very sad about his condition. His heart was as big as the sky and he was able to listen to others problems and offer a caring solution if he could…which he often could. He met his soulmate Penny and, after receiving infertility treatment, they were lucky enough to give birth to their son Elijah on the 20th May 2014. Elijah was Nathan’s pride and joy and he was looking forward to teaching him to play the piano and write, basically passing on his talent to his much wanted and loved son, leaving the physical games of footie etc. to be taught by his two brothers Richie and Ryan. Such a simple yet perfect lifestyle that Nathan yearned for, however it wasn’t to be, and after spending only one week being able to hold his baby Nathan passed away unexpectedly on 7th June 2014. Nathan is so badly missed by us all, but we consider that we were blessed to have been able to have him with us for virtually 31 years. As parents we teach our children the skills for life survival, however, we often found ourselves being taught by Nathan.

We will never laugh again with so much joy. Our family is our world and a huge part has been taken from us. We know that Nathan is now the brightest star in the sky, and we will love him forever and beyond. Could we also use this space to thank the vast number of people for their kind thoughts, words and flowers and for the donations for Great Ormond Street Hospital, which has totalled £1,000. Thank you for allowing us to write in what once was Nathan’s writing space.

God bless

Pension Scams Beware!

Yaxley Football Club After a successful season in the UCL last time out finishing 6th, the Cuckoos will be pushing for the top 4 this season.

Their summer recruitment was completely swiftly and decisively with Dan Cotton coming in from Champions Spalding and Nick Davey, a forward from Peterborough Northern Star. Manager Brett Whaley identified his targets and went out and got them in June. Yaxley lad Lewis Stone followed them having finished last season with Whittlesey, returning to his hometown club. The highest profile departure was Matt Holland who joined Deeping Rangers after many years service at In2itive Park. Pre-season has been encouraging with key performances against a number of teams from the leagues above. St Neots were run especially close despite being short odds favourites for the Southern Premier Division. The spine of the Cuckoos line up remains the same with Aaron Butcher starting his third season in goal. Gav Cooke and Andy Coleman (Asst Mgr) provide experience at the back with J P Duncliffe and Stone occupying the full back roles. Wayne Morris can fill in a number of positions and is invaluable.

It appears following the changes, pension scams are on the increase in the UK. Check the facts before you make an irreversible decision. A lifetime’s savings can be lost in a moment. Pension scams are enticing savers by claiming to help them access their pension before age 55 or that people can already take more than 25% of their pension as cash, tax free. For most people the offers will be bogus and victims will lose most, if not all, of their savings. Only in rare cases – like terminal illness – can pension scheme members take their pension before age 55. It remains the law that pension scheme members can only take up to 25% of their pension savings as a cash lump sum. Although this may change in the future, it’s important that members aren’t fooled into thinking that is the law today.

In midfield Scott Carter and Robert Hughes provide drive and goals with Kyle Nolan protecting the back four. Carter has in fact picked up the nickname “Non League Lampard” on social media. We hope he isn’t about to leave for America! Olly Gale, Ricky Hailstone, Dan Cotton and Matt Barber provide plenty more options, Hailstone the skipper has recently been appointed a club Vice – President for over a decade of continued service to the club. Some accolade. Up front former Peterborough United front man Andy Furnell and Luke Hipwell will vye for a spot with Davey. It’s a side that has grown in the three seasons Whaley has been in the dug out. But, without wholesale personnel changes. The Manager feels the balance is almost there at the club he Manages, following in the footsteps of his Father Malcolm who holds the record for club appearances having been goalkeeper for nigh on 20 years.

Pension scheme members who agree to transfer may lose all their savings and may still be subject to tax charges of over half their transfer value for taking an ‘unauthorised payment’. Reproduced by kind permission from The Pensions Regular where more details may be obtained on their website:

Hampton Football Club Under-18 Ladies team have had a busy summer, which included securing a substantial sponsorship deal and have participated in National and International Tournaments as part of their pre-season schedule.

Sport

Hampton Ladies Summer Of Fun

Fenland First Aid Services have kitted the whole team with playing kit, training kit and warm up tops, all displaying the clubs new badge and the Fenland First Aid Services logo. This is just the start of the relationship and they will also be providing the club with some First Aid Training, First Aid Kit and will be providing First Aid cover for the clubs next tournament. At the beginning of July the ladies represented Peterborough in the ACES National Championships, which allows the most successful teams from each county in England to compete for National honours. The ladies finished a very respectable 3rd, facing oppositions from as far as Brighton and Newcastle along the way. They then jetted off to Oslo to compete in the Norway Cup, which saw 1560 teams from across the globe visit Norway to compete in the world largest Youth Football tournament. Only elite teams are considered for entry and over 100 teams were selected at their age group. After five days of football the girls end the week ranked 9th with only professional academy teams finishing ahead of them. The league will be strong despite Spalding getting promoted. Any division with the likes of Wisbech Town, AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Huntingdon will be competitive. Throw in Deeping who are always there and there abouts and Holbeach who have been rejuvenated under their former title winning Manager John Chand, and you have strength in depth in a league that is always tricky to win. Our biggest match in the next month is the FA Cup qualifying round against Godmanchester.

Please come along and support the lads... see www.yaxleyfc.com for more.

On the final day of their trip, they played a testimonial game for Millie Hopkisson, who will be moving to an FA Centre of Excellence in Lincoln next season. The girls played Tromsdalen UIL from the North of Norway and before the game both teams signed a Hampton FC pennant that was presented to Millie at the end of the game. For the 2014/15 season the team will be competing for four pieces of silverware including the Eastern Region Champions League and Women’s Junior Invitation Cup.

Most teams at the club are now full, but there are a couple of places left at U12 and U16 level and you will find more details on the clubs website at www.hamptonfc.co.uk.

Once they have your card and PIN the scammer can then spend your money.

Courier Fraud If you haven’t heard of the ‘Courier Fraud’ yet, please read this and share with others.

Courier frauds are becoming more prevalent and sophisticated. Usually the elderly are targeted. Scammers will telephone a potential victim purporting to be from their bank, from the police or other law enforcement authority. They then dupe the person into revealing their PIN and handing over their debit or credit card.

What you should know

There are many variations to this scam, one of which is where the scammer requests you to assist in a police investigation by asking you to go to your bank, withdraw a large sum of cash and take this home, where it will be collected by a courier or taxi driver.

Prevention Advice If you receive a call like this, hang up the phone. In order to clear your line from the scammer, wait at least 5 minutes before making any calls. DO NOT hand over any money as a result of this type of phone call.

Consumer Advice

30pm.

Please be aware of the following Your bank or the police will NEVER ring you and tell you that they are coming to your home to pick up your card, so never hand it over to anyone who comes to collect it. Your bank will NEVER ask you to authorise anything by entering your PIN into the telephone. NEVER share your PIN with anyone – the only times you should use your PIN is at a cash machine or when you use a chip and PIN machine.

If you think you have been a victim of this scam, please telephone the police on 101.

A scammer rings you, claiming to be from your Bank or the Police, saying a fraudulent payment has been spotted on your card and this needs resolving, or that someone has been arrested using your details and cards. You may be asked to ring back using the phone number on the back of your card. This further convinces you that the call is genuine. However, the scammer keeps the line open at their end so, when you make the call, you are unknowingly connected straight back to them or their friends. They will ask you for your PIN number or sometimes ask you to key it into your phone’s handset. YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE YOUR PIN TO ANYONE IN ANY WAY. The scammer then sends a courier or taxi to pick up your card from your home. If is possible the driver does not know they are being used as part of the scam.

Stick to

toys

It’s the age old image of a man and his dog – out on a country walk, the man throwing a stick and the dog keenly retrieving it again and again – but it’s one that makes anyone who works in the veterinary world cringe and hold their breath. Every year veterinary surgeries see dogs with stick injuries, some minor and sadly a small proportion that are fatal. All from the seemingly harmless game of fetch with a stick. Injury can occur as a dog tries to grab the stick at speed. If one end gets jammed into the ground, the soft tissues in the mouth are no match for the other end of the stick. The problem with sticks - they have pointy ends and they splinter. Both these characteristics can cause serious problems for our pet pooches: • Minor stick injuries include wood splinters and cuts in the mouth, possibly causing local infection. This can often be sorted out by a clean and a course of antibiotics if needed. • Sometimes fragments of the wood can become lodged tightly on roof of the dog’s mouth, swelling follows making it harder to dislodge and again infection. This often requires a sedation or anaesthetic to allow the vet to remove the fragments. • Sharp edges of the wood can cause deep and extensive lacerations to lips, gums or the tongue. Some injuries need cleaning and stitching under anaesthetic. • Splinters of the wood can be swallowed by the dog and cause lacerations and possibly more serious complications in the digestive system. • The most serious injury is when the sharp end of the stick punctures the back of the dog’s mouth. This can sever blood vessels or even puncture the oesophagus or trachea. The wood often splinters making the job of cleaning out the wound much harder. In these sorts of injuries, deep infection can set in which can track down to the dogs chest.

What to look out for if you suspect a stick injury: • Excessive drooling • Pawing at the mouth • Problems eating or drinking • Blood from the mouth or blood-tin ged saliva • Gagging or retching If you see any of these signs please seek veterinary attention.

Advice: We recommend you NEVER allow your dog to play with sticks. There are plenty of toys available to play fetch with that don’t carry this risk. If your dog already loves sticks and always picks them up when out, it is possible to re-train them to the play with a toy instead. Seek advice from your local Cromwell Surgery.

Yaxley Gazette Blog

Drew Pontikis has been a Yaxley resident for the past 7 years, and has two young sons to keep him busy. He works as a Software Tester in Orton Southgate, and is also the Editor of www.zero1gaming.com

BLOG I grew up within shouting distance of a train tracks. My grandparents lived on the flight path for Heathrow in London. At university my room overlooked a busy road. My first flat backed onto the main train line into London. I am therefore quite used to the clatter and sounds of modern transportation, in fact it is something of a comfort to me; unlike many the sound of a train going by late at night often breaks the silence of the night air and helps me drift off to sleep. So it is unusual then that this month that I find myself complaining about noise, especially when considering that it is the roar of jet engines of fighter jets on manoeuvres over Yaxley, something that is unbelievably cool. Make no mistake, even as an adult rapidly approaching thirty I find all airplanes exciting to be around. I will always try to encourage a toilet stop at the services opposite Stansted on one of our many trips to Essex, and even with two young kids in the car I’m always the most excited one when we drive past the Harrier outside Wittering. Curious then that I should choose to complain about getting my own private air show without leaving my home.

GGM Accountancy Solutions GGM Accountancy Solutions was established by Gemma Mansell, a qualified member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and Association of Accounting Technicians. In 2010 and now with a young family, Gemma set up her own accountancy practice with a vision to provide affordable and convenient accountancy services to individuals and businesses in and around Peterborough. GGM Accountancy can deal with all of your accountancy and taxation needs, whether start ups, sole traders, partnerships or limited companies. They pride themselves on developing an honest and close relationship with clients and providing and efficient and cost-effective service, not only with regards to fees but pro-active planning and advice. Gemma is able to use her knowledge in all aspects of accountancy and taxation to help meet the needs of clients, from meeting statutory deadlines to offering general advice.

There are two reasons for this. The first is I remember hearing the roar of that asteroid that exploded over Russia as it went tearing across the sky last year. Every time I hear the rumble of a jet engine now the first thought that goes through my mind is not ‘awesome that’s a jet fighter, can I see it anywhere?’, its ‘is that an asteroid and am I literally moments from being killed?’. As there are jets flying almost every other day, this constant state of being on edge can become just a teeny bit tiresome. The second reason is that I have two young boys, and because they are boys and hang around with me they think that planes are the most exciting thing in the whole world ever. So now every time there is the roar of a jet, it is followed by the roar of two children screaming with excitement and desperately pressing themselves up against the window trying to spot them. It’s lovely, but it’s very loud!

GGM Accountancy provide the following services: • Annual accounts • Corporation tax • Self-assessment • Book-keeping • Payroll • Vat returns • Management accounts • Subcontractors

Single? you are more likely to meet someone who’s a kindred spirit, which in turn, evolves into a brilliant new romance. Virgo August 24-September 23 If you still feel like you are in limbo, ask yourself why? What is it that you are overwhelmed with or holding back from? You cannot continue to live this half life. Maybe you are scared to address the real deep-rooted feelings/fears you have - be brave and speak up. Libra September 24-October 23 You may have to dig deep, but the investments you make now into your happiness, future and work situation will be well worth it over the coming months. Celebrations concerning baby news will put smiles on lots of faces! ACCOUNTANCY

Scorpio October 24-November 22 Life has been throwing some of its biggest challenges your way recently and you may well wonder why, and is it ever going to let up? Have faith, good things are taking shape and you are working towards a much brighter, happier and healthier future.
