Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club - Presidents Bowl

Holme Afternoon Tea Club report

A fitting end to our season, brilliant sunshine, played with teams of four, well supported, every one in the best of spirits none the less giving of their best. President Bruce, Kathy Browning, Terry Robinson and Norman Hill proving worthy winners. Hazel Bass laid on a cracking spread. A £100 raised for Cancer research. Almost impossible to think of anything further to better it – until ,to everyone’s delight. A fly past by the Red Arrows! Just to confirm that we really have finished until next April our call for volunteers via our Web-Site to put the Green to bed for the winter was well supported. It was especially pleasing to see our new members and the roll up people amongst them. Norman our green keeper was delighted with the response, he says the end of season green work will be finished in record time! (See Picture). Chairman Graham Agger has taken on the task of Match Secretary and Les Sharp is now the Treasurer of the Peterborough and District League two extremely onerous tasks.

Voices and music from the past resounded around Holme Village Hall at the meeting of HAT Club in October.

Social events. First off a Beetle Drive on Sat 18th of October followed by a Quiz on Sat 8th November with a Christmas Bazaar on the 6th December, our Christmas party will be on the 20th more about this later. Leagues a mixed year, Captain Bruce is able to report his over 60s team has been promoted to the second division as well as winning the Mick Lewin Cup. He is also able to report the friendlies have been well supported with a 75% win rate. Ian Patchett and his mid week C team in spite of their best efforts have been unable to escape relegation! Many of their games have been lost by the odd shot. Rest assured, hey will be back up again very soon!

Quiches and autumn pudding were eaten after the talk.

Thera Trust – Joyce and Les continue to welcome them to their Thursday morning slot with occasional help from Norman when his Green Keeping duties allow. A (Tony) Casbon Press Officer.

Edison Bell the record and gramophone makers once had a factory in Huntingdon and our speaker, David Cozens is the proud owner of one of their gramophones. He has also collected many of the old vinyl records and he played a variety of recordings some back to the 1920s.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 12th November, at 2.30pm at Holme Village Hall when Nicki Downes will sing songs of the decades. We are in need of helpers to drive, cook or serve at our meetings, please contact Sue Knight on 01487 830768 if you can help.

WI Updates

Yaxley WI In September members and visitors heard a most interesting talk by Alan Jones about the East Anglian Children’s Hospice. This wonderful charity costs a lot to run and a large amount of fundraising is needed to carry on their marvellous work. On 16th September several members enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea at Dobbies Garden Centre. Our October speaker enjoyed by members and 1 visitor was Rex Freeman who spoke on ‘Growing Old Disgracefully” He spoke on the many activities enjoyed by him interspersed with stories and jokes. The key to a long and happy life seems to be to keep as active as possible both physically and mentally and he is certainly a good advert for it. The November meeting to be held on13th at the Lancaster Club will be our A G M followed by a social evening.

Holme WI Our meeting last month was our members night, this is a night that one of our members arranges so we never know what to expect to we get there, in the event our speaker was Nina Heaton, a lady who help people with their ‘Nature of Emotions’, this includes; anger, disappointment, grief and feelings that are ‘not useful’ in our everyday life.

Nina helped us to look at our Energy patterns to help deal with some of these emotions, an interesting night. We also have been making cakes and sold these at our 1940’s weekend to raise funds for our speakers, knitting for children, going on days out and eating! Next month our speaker will be Wendy Knowles on the subject of ‘Eggheads’, come along and join us on the 6th November, 7.30pm at Holme village hall, all welcome.

East Anglian Air Ambulance

Just Giving has recently revealed the top ten most generous towns in the UK… We weren’t surprised to hear that top of the list are Bedford and Cambridge, donating over £2.5million between them! Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire make up half of the area covered by East Anglian Air Ambulance; we also carry out our lifesaving emergency medical work in Norfolk and Suffolk. EAAA receives no direct government funding, so the £7.6million needed to run our service this year comes directly from charitable donations and the local people who generously support us. There are lots of ways you can donate to EAAA; the simplest of those is by using our text to donate numbers. If you would like to make a text donation, Text EAAA to 70300 to donate £3 or Text HELI to 70500 to donate £5. However, it isn’t just financially that you can support us; many people choose to donate their time instead. We greatly appreciate all the time that our

volunteers give up for EAAA, without them our work would not be possible. Trevor and Bridget Crow, from Cambridge, have been volunteering for the charity for 6 years. Trevor said: ‘We are both in our 70s and volunteering for EAAA keeps us active and gives us something to do in our retirement’ ‘We have been to some fantastic events including the Duxford Air Show where we worked at the EAAA merchandise stall. It has been a great opportunity to meet some new people and visit different places. We have found some lovely pubs!’ If volunteering is not for you and you would like a quick way to help the charity, why not follow us on Facebook and Twitter? Hope into Action

Hope into Action, the Peterborough based homeless charity, brought over sixty people together to sleep rough on Friday night to raise awareness for homelessness in the City. People from across the city and from all walks of life slept under cardboard in a field in Ferry Meadows to highlight the plight of the homeless in Peterborough. Members of the prison service, police, church leaders, the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, former homeless people, ex addicts, the general public and staff from Hope into Action slept under the stars and listened to the real life experiences of what life is like for the homeless by former homeless people themselves. The night was a great success with nearly ten thousand pounds raised for Hope into Action, which will be used to support the most vulnerable people in Peterborough and beyond. Hope into Action, the award winning Peterborough-based charity which houses the homeless in partnership with local churches, hosted its first Big Sleep Out at Ferry Meadows on Friday 10th October to coincide with World Homeless Day.

St Mary’s church

The Bishop of Ely officially opened St Mary’s church in Farcet on Sunday 21st September 2014 after being closed for six months for extensive and essential repair works to be completed on the church. Almost one hundred people filled the church as the Bishop, Stephen Conway, held a special Eucharist service to give thanks and celebrate completion of the restoration work. After the service the Bishop viewed the photographic display by Richard Houghton of Photous Photography in Farcet, where a variety of photographs showed the various stages and the progress made during the repairs, plus the six wood carved ‘Angels’ in the roof which were previously unseen by most visitors. Also in attendance were the Vicar, Anne Shorter and the ley reader Barrie Swingler who was thanked and presented with a small gift for reaching 25 years as a reader for the church service.

Fourfields School

Holme Village Pre-School We have had a very busy start to term and the children have been taking part in lots of “Autumn” themed activities. We explored the village on a nature walk, collecting leaves, twigs and various other treasures. These were then all used to make lovely pictures to display in our new investigation area. Children extended this by talking about spiders and other insects and by exploring our bug hotel, making their own spiders and sharing the story of “The Very Busy Spider”. We have also been practising our fine motor skills through cutting and balancing activities which the children enjoyed.

We are busy with our fun draising efforts we hav ea children’s zone at the Ho lme 1940’s weekend for the first time and we have our ann ual Christmas Market tak ing place on 15th November at the Village Hall.

Yaxley Gazette

The children at Fourfields are going mad about Hot School lunches. With the introduction of Universal Infant Free School Meals, we are seeing lots of children taking advantage of the hot meal from our own kitchen and cooked by our very own brilliant catering team. On 2nd October 288 children took part in our ‘Finger and Fork’ event and hot dogs, beans and oven chips were served with a pudding of flapjack or choc- ice. It makes you want to be at Primary School again doesn’t it? Our new-look school library has opened and now boasts a wealth of wonderful fiction and non-fiction books. We want to thank both our own Friends of Fourfields group and Clarks Drainage for their donations to ensure that our children are immersed in good quality literature and learn to love reading for pleasure. Our new school motto is ‘SHINE!’ and we are catching children as they shine brightly in all manner of activities- working hard, behaviour, fabulous work, engaged learning- the list is endless. If you know of a Fourfields pupil who is shining brightly near you, we would love to hear about it so that we can celebrate this in school.

Yaxley Infants Please come along to our Christmas Fayre, organised by our Friends of Fourfields, on Saturday 29th November from 10.30am -2.30pm with plenty of stalls, refreshments and festive fun. The entrance fee of £1.50 per child (accompanied) includes a visit to ‘You Know Who’!

This half term has seen us learning outside and making the most of the Autumnal sunshine! It all started with a letter from a worried entomologist ‘Mrs. Gardner’ who had lost all her insects. A case for the Minibeast Detectives! We used algorithms to determine which group the minibeasts belonged to and researched their habitats. As well as getting outside to hunt for the insects, we used ipads to record our findings and used pastels to create stunning artwork. Year One and Year Two looked after their very own caterpillars and studied them as they built their chrysalises and finally turned into beautiful butterflies. In Foundation Stage, the children have been very busy party planning for Kipper the dog! What a lucky he dog he was, receiving necklaces made with repeating patterns, lovely cards and marvellous models. The Foundation Stage children are also looking forward to their parents coming to school for our ‘Curriculum in Action’ sessions. Next month we are looking forward to continuing our support of The Nalaraami School in Tanzania with our ‘Wear something blue’ day, which will fund a new water tank for the school after our successful campaign to get every child a school jumper.

Stilton C of E Primary School We’re having a wonderful Autumn term at Stilton C of E Primary School. Children in Owl Class are learning about ‘The Little Red Hen’. Using the story to help them, they have been grinding the corn and making the dough to bake bread. Robin Class have been learning about ‘Funny Bones’ and even had a skeleton visit their classroom! The topic in Otter class is ‘Could you be the next…?’ The children have been thinking about iconic people, such as Florence Nightingale. Key Stage 2 are learning about Great Achievements Past and Present, focusing on Ancient Egypt. Recently we celebrated Harvest Festival with our annual church service, which our grown-ups attended too. Children from each class presented their work and joined in with collective worship (see picture). We brought in donations of food for the Peterborough Food Bank.

Stanground Academy Students at the Stanground Academy have been taking part in the ‘Operation Smokestorm’ project run by the Peterborough City Council. The programme is designed to educate young people about the dangers of smoking through a fun and interactive approach. The mission is to design an advertisement showing all the information they have learnt as a secret spy within a tobacco company. Student entries were judged at the Peterborough Town Hall last Friday (26 September) and seven students from the Stanground Academy were recognised for their outstanding contribution to promoting positive health messages at the Youth Health Awards.

All seven studen ts received awar ds for their hard work in promot ing the anti-sm oking message (Operation smok e storm) with th ree of our stud excelling them ents selves in receiv ing gold in the category and sil written ver in the music al category.

We also held our annual Macmillan coffee morning, where children invited their grown-ups into school for a drink and cake. We were delighted to raise £276.44 for this worthy cause.

Night Carer required

Little Acorn Pre School

This month we have been enjoying our new Montessori room and our new play area in the preschool that was recently built. We also have a lovely new garden to play in. We were able to watch the build from start to finish. We have also opened our new Daisy Room for toddlers. We have been learning about Diwali and created some lovely chalk Rangoli pictures. We also celebrated Halloween and made cards and lanterns. We have taken advantage of the windy weather and have been playing in the leaves. Our parents had fun spending quality time with their children during parent activity stay and play week. The children were very proud to show their parents around the preschool and they were able to get involved in the fun activities.

Night carer required at Olivemede Yaxley. • Hours available from as little as 1 night per week to 5 nights per fortnight. • Current pay £8.40 including bonus.

Dr. Chris Grant retires As many of you may already be aware, Chris Grant has decided to retire from general practice at the end of this year. He came to Yaxley in 1987 having trained in Cardiff. He has always played an active part in the community life of the local area, particularly centred around St Peter’s Church in Yaxley and he also educated his children in Holme School. I hope he feels when he looks back on his time, that he has had a fulfilling and varied career. Initially, he focused his energies into training the next generation of GPs in the Peterborough area; he later branched out into training medical students and I’m sure they all appreciated his calm, methodical and thoughtful approach to medicine and would have learnt a lot from his careful tutelage and expert listening skills. He also gained the distinction of being made a fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners which is a reflection of the high regard felt by his colleagues regarding his contribution to general practice. He then moved into medical politics for a while and was actively involved in the planning and delivery of healthcare in what was then called South Peterborough. He returned to full-time general practice after the system was reorganised in a different way. His newly acquired administrative skills however were put to good use as he was instrumental in

making sure the practice fulfilled the necessary requirements to achieve the Royal College of General Practice quality practice award. Having worked with and been a friend of Chris for many years, I’m sure he will be missed by many. He has been incredibly conscientious, hard-working and loyal with a great attention to detail. I’m sure he will use his retirement to great effect. Continuing charity work such as he has done recently in Rwanda, honing his bass guitar skills, supporting his local church, walking and skiing in the French Alps and gardening, being perhaps just some of the things he might end up doing. We wish Chris and his wife Sue and his family well for the future. If any patient would wish to make a donation in grateful thanks for their care over the years then it is Chris’s wish that they will go on his behalf to the Yaxley Group Practice Patients Association. Pensions & Divorce

THE FACTS:

We read and hear about celebrity divorces all of the time. The press is full of articles about who got the “City Apartment” or “Villa in Marbella”, but what about the less glamorous, but often more valuable asset – The Pension? When couples divorce, the Court must consider all of the assets, including the available pension provision. In many cases, other than the home, the biggest asset is a pension, especially if one party has worked in the public sector or has a final salary scheme pension. Quite often, one party has a greater pension provision than the other, particularly if one partner has spent time out of the workplace looking after the children. The Court has three main options in dealing with pensions upon divorce: •

Offsetting – the pension owner keeps their pension and the other retains another asset i.e. house or savings

Attachment orders – the pension remains in the name of the owner but the other “flags” a share of the pension to become payable to them when the pension owner retires

Pensions sharing orders – pension is split (not always equally) and some of the pension is transferred from that party’s pension to the other party’s pension – they are then in control of how to invest and manage the pension and when to draw the pension. This is the most usual way to split pensions on divorce.

Anyone with thinking of divorce or separation regardless of the issues should obtain legal advice. Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting couples to reach a swift, amicable agreement, specific to their needs. For any Family Law queries please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you.

Church News St. Peter’s Church We are just back from a short break in Berlin which is a really fascinating city. I was last there as a tourist in 1982 when the city was partitioned by The Wall and I had countless business meetings there between 10 and 14 years ago. One of the many things which really struck me on our recent visit was the determination of all generations to learn from the mistakes of the past. No attempt is made to disguise the huge problems which that city and indeed country has had over the past 100 years or so. On the contrary, past mistakes are highlighted in the express hope that future generations will learn from the errors of history. One 50 metre stretch of the wall has been maintained and forms the basis of a “Topography of Terror” - an exhibition of the errors and inhumanities of the past. A reflection on the past seems particularly poignant as we commemorate 100 years since the start of WWI this month. I’ve been reading about a soldier in the Royal Artillery called George Vinall who had an incredible escape in July 1915. Whilst in the trenches he was hit by a bullet which was stopped in its tracks by the Bible in George’s tunic pocket. The bullet came to a halt at Isaiah 49:8 which reads, “I will preserve you”. George wrote home to his parents saying, “May this be true of future days until I see you all again, is my heartfelt prayer”. George did indeed see his parents again and went on to become a translator for the Bible Society. George’s story is wonderful. However, there have been many millions of servicemen and women and civilians who were not so fortunate and have been killed during the numerous conflicts in the last 100 hundred years.

Most of us are used to hearing Carols sung throughout the Christmas period. Indeed many shops will start playing them shortly after Remembrance Day. But how many of us are familiar with the Advent Carols which are more appropriate from the beginning of December right through Advent. We in Yaxley and Holme have a tradition of having an Advent Carol Service on the nearest Sunday to Advent Sunday. This year that will be on Advent Sunday itself 30th November 2014. It will be held in St Giles Church, Holme starting at 4 pm. Why so late? Because it is a candlelit service.

We would welcome your attendance and indeed your voices to help us praise the Lord singing such Advent Carols as O come, O come Emmanuel, and Come thou long expected Jesus, to mention only a couple. Go on. Put it in your diary now so that the festive season can get off to a proper start.

God’s promise to all those killed still holds true as he promises to preserve us for everlasting life in his Kingdom where there are no wars and where death is just a memory. As we commemorate 100 years since the start of WWI we give thanks for all those who gave their lives that we might live in freedom. Our Remembrance Day Services on November 9th are at 3pm at St Peter’s and 2.30pm at St Giles. As we give thanks for those who have fallen may we seek to join with the people of Berlin in learning the lessons of past mistakes. May we all seek to make this a better world to live in as we prepare for eternal life in the Kingdom which God has promised to preserve us for. If you would like details of our other services or any of the other activities in and around the church then please contact me or visit our website at www. saintpeters.co.uk.

Yaxley Methodist Church Our friend Graham Sharpe is leaving us to live nearer his family in Cumbria. We wish him every happiness and offer him many thanks for all he has done for us over the years. AUTUMN FAYRE on the 8th November we will be offering you the chance to find an early Christmas present or two. There will be homemade cakes, raffle, tombola; books etc. come along from 10 a.m. FOODBANK collection is still growing. Please continue to leave donations at the Chapel Sunday mornings or at the Autumn Fayre. SERVICES and Junior Church are held on Sunday Mornings at 10.30 everyone is welcome.

You can contact the Victims’ Hub by calling 0800 781 6818 Monday - Friday, 8am to 8pm Saturday 9am to 5pm) or by emailing victimshub@cambs.police.uk

New Victims’ Hub launched to help victims of crime in Cambridgeshire

On the 1st October 2014, a pioneering new hub was launched by Cambridgeshire Police to help support victims of crime by providing a more centralised and co-ordinated local framework for help and support. Funding for this service passed from the Ministry of Justice to Police & Crime Commissioners to enable a far more locally driven provision for victims of crime to be created. All forces have to change the way they operate their victim support by the spring 2015, so Cambridgeshire Constabulary were keen to start early. They are one of seven forces leading the way nationally to provide a local service for victims, from which a range of support can be accessed. Victims of crime will be assessed to determine the level of support they need and then helped in the most appropriate way, bringing in specialist services and other agencies as required. By managing support services at a local level, the service will be better able to meet the needs of the communities and target provision to where it is most needed. Officers investigating crime will highlight vulnerable victims to the hub - but all victims of crime will be given contact details for the hub if they feel they need extra support. How crime affects a victim or witness depends entirely on the individual. The most important thing to remember is that a more centralised and efficient network of help is now available. Yaxley FC at the top

Fast starting U15 Lynx

Yaxley FC currently sit proud at the top of the United Counties League after 6 straight wins including a defeat of Rushden and Diamonds in front of a massive crowd. Last weekend the Cuckoos advanced one step nearer their first Wembley final in the FA Vase. Such is their form that a number of internet bookmakers have installed them as 8th favourites to win the competition outright. Something that the Management and Players are keen to play down as they look to take it one round at a time. Former Peterborough and (ironically) Rushden & Diamonds striker Andy Furnell has been hitting the goal trail for his hometown club, Yaxley FC

The bread and butter of course are the league and the Cuckoos continue to keep pace with the bigger clubs in the league. “It’s hard for us to compete with a smaller catchment area for both supporters and sponsorship” says James Warrener of the clubs website www. yaxleyfc.com “but there are new supporters coming to games all the time and not just from Yaxley. We are seeing support from Stilton, Hampton and I spoke to a guy at a recent match who is travelling over from Kings Cliffe, such is the football on offer”. With tough matches coming up with title rivals Wisbech, Holbeach and the “Fenland el clasico” with Huntingdon in the weeks before Christmas it will be a true test of the clubs credentials. “As a lifelong follower of the club, these are incredible times on and off the park with a brilliant team and fantastic stadium” adds James.

Yaxley Gazette

St Ives Town striker Karl Gibbs has joined the Cuckoos after his release from the Southern League club.

In Junior football the U15s Lynx have made an impressive start to their season along with the U9s. You can read about all of the clubs teams on the website. Both the U9 boys and U11 girls teams won their respective divisions and represented the club at the County finals day at Eaton Socon CC, performing well but finishing in 3rd and 4th place. It’s not just the youngest category that have shone, all age groups have performed well as the U11’s and U13’s both finished as runners up and the U15’s finished a creditable 3rd in their divisions providing much optimism of a bright future for the club. Yaxley’s Youth Develepment Manager Phil Lewis commented. “The season has been everything we had hoped for and more across all age groups. To have both our youngest sides win their divisions is a great achievement and was a good excuse for a Yaxley road trip!” “There is some great talent and whilst the older players are still one or two years away from making big impressions in the senior teams, the club certainly has a very bright future. Just a couple of weeks ago, 12 year old Danny Iqbal claimed a brilliant 4 wickets for 12 runs spell in the 2nd team.”

Pets

Fantastic, ethical & caring environment for pets Having been a secondary school teacher for 20 years, and with a love of animals, Marie-Line felt ready for a change of career and now manages the PetStay Peterborough Branch.

My three adorable cocker spaniel puppies; Charlie, Maya and Rosie each have their own personality, likes and dislikes, and can be so mischievious at times and hard work but they’re great company and bring me so much joy that I just can’t envisage life without them anymore. I think it is so important that people are offered the best choices of care for their pet(s).

I am very keen to keep my own pets happy, safe and healthy. I often go to France to visit my family but I can’t always take them with me. I just couldn’t bear the thought of having to leave them in a kennel when was away! I read about PetStay and thought it was a fantastic, ethical and caring idea, exactly what I was looking for for my 3 lovable rascals …and for a new career too! With PetStay, I am reassured that our pets will be cared for in a safe and caring home environment as I carefully select all our dog loving carers who are fully insured, vetted and fully licensed! I also endeavour to match the right carer for each dog! My second concern for my puppies was to keep them healthy and I turned my attention to food. I came across a fantastic Swedish company called Husse who offers premium quality dog food, packed full with nutrients and antioxidants, highly digestible, ethically made and with a wide

range of products to suit every dog from puppies to old dogs, pregnant biches and fussy eaters. It is so good that it is fit for human consumption but I can’t say I have tried it myself! It is competitively priced, delivered home for free and comes with access to personalised nutritional advice from a fully trained and qualified Husse pet nutritionist. The pet nutritionist initially offers a ‘dinner date’ where they visit your house, pockets full of goodies and samples and assess the nutritional needs of the pets before matching the right food for them and then follows the pet’s nutritional needs all its life. I was so impressed that I became a Husse pet nutritionist myself and I now also help pet owners make healthy food choices for their pets. If you would like to know more about PetStay and Husse, don’t hesitate to contact me, I would be very happy to help.

Amazing Pets – by Cromwell Vets

We meet so many great pets every day but every so often we meet one who amazes us. Meet Jester. Jester’s story begins when he was around 2 years old (this is all we know) when he was brutally discarded by being thrown from a moving vehicle. A kind lady saw this happen and immediately took him to her local vets, luckily he only suffered minor injuries. After being nursed to health, Jester eventually found his forever home with Cromwell physiotherapist Leanne. Jester is now at least 14 years old and as expected for his age he does have a few problems. Jester has had 2 major spinal operations and now also suffers from heart failure, liver disease, epilepsy and arthritis needing 12 medications daily. The remarkable thing about Jester is even with these conditions he’s still a very happy and energetic dog. He constantly wants to play with his ball and walks at least an hour a day (even up to 40 miles in a week when he’s on holiday in the Lake District!). He’s even known to wake up 5 year old Jack Russell Boo to get her to play with him.

Apart from being amazing, Jester is able to live such an active life at 14 years old thanks to the brilliant care and treatment he is receiving from his Vets. Treatment and medication made less stressful for Leanne because Jester is insured. Without the worry of money, Jester has been able to undergo advanced diagnostic procedures, receive specialist surgery for his spine and get the very best treatment for his problems. We’re sure this winter this tenacious little gentleman will be putting on his jacket and playing around in the snow; there’s still some fun to be had for old dogs like Jester! If you would like to know more about insurance or what’s best for you and your pet, come along for a FREE nurse appointment at any Cromwell Vets Surgeries.

Yaxley Gazette Blog

Drew Pontikis has been a Yaxley resident for the past 7 years, and has two young sons to keep him busy. He works as a Software Tester in Orton Southgate, and is also the Editor of www.zero1gaming.com

BLOG

I write for a number of different websites, and a while ago I wrote a very unfavourable piece about iPads. am not a fan you see - to me they are the tablet PC equivalent in driving around in a white convertible BMW; for people who are doing well for themselves but aren’t satisfied unless you know they’re doing well for themselves. I Despite Apple’s stubborn refusal to win me over by sending me a free one my ire towards iPads has softened recently, however there is one irritation that I just cannot let go of – people who use their iPad as a camera. As far as I can tell there is no good reason to use your iPad as a camera, but SOOOOO many people do it. In the park, at the beach, at your kid’s Christmas show, in the maternity ward of the hospital; there’s some cretin who’s thought ‘no – I will not use my camera, purpose built for the task at hand. I will not use my phone, even though it is an iPhone where even the older ones have a higher resolution camera than an iPad (Google it); I will use this large piece of technology for which I paid either a considerable amount of money or which my work gave to me to capture this wonderful image to remember for time immortal. When I am old and grey, I will look back on this image of my child’s first steps and think yes – I once had an iPad’. As with all acts of pretention and showing off, those trying to take photos with an iPad look ridiculous. This made me think – there must be some other reason other than showing off. As mentioned earlier the camera has the same number of Mega Pixels as a cheese sandwich, meaning the pictures aren’t great. It’s not as small and convenient as a camera phone or camera, so it’s awkward to carry around with you. The only good reason I can come up with is to look at them on the (admittedly lovely) screen. Well guess what? The thing you want to look at is literally right in front of you! Listen to the wind in the trees! Smell the fresh cut grass! Shed a tear as you child sings Away In A Manger! Just put the damn iPad down!

Taxation

Question: I am just about to move into the property market as a first time home buyer and understand that I have to pay something called “Stamp Duty” – is this correct? Answer: Unfortunately yes if you are buying a property for between £125,001 and £250,000 you will have to pay Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) at a rate of 1%. SDLT has long been an unwelcome extra faced by first-time buyers trying to get onto the housing ladder, yet one that they have grudgingly had to pay. However, it is not only first time buyers new to the market that are unprepared. Properties costing between £250,001 and £500,000 attract SDLT at 3 per cent. Put another way, purchase a property for £250,000 and you will have to fork out £2,500 in SDLT; purchase at £250,001 (an extra £1) and you face a £7,500 bill. The rates also increase the higher the purchase price. However, you don’t pay any SDLT if your purchase price is £125,000 or less.

Tax:

You may have heard talk about the “enquiry window”, meaning the time limit for HMRC to begin their enquiries (it used to be called an investigation) into a tax return. The length of this “window” varies – for example, the “window” for a return of SDLT is nine months after the return is filed, but the commonest “window” you will come across is that for self assessment tax returns (income tax, capital gains tax, and corporation tax), and this window is twelve months from the date the return is filed.

Set of 30 miniature motorbikes (collectables) with display shelf in excellent condition. £30 ono Tel 01733 244227

For example, the income tax and capital gains tax self assessment for the tax year 2012/13 was due to be filed by 31 January 2014. If it was in fact filed on that day, then HMRC have until 31 January 2015 to open an “enquiry” into that return. If, however, the return was filed earlier, say on 1 July 2013, then HMRC’s “enquiry window” will have closed on 1 July 2014. Once the enquiry window has closed, HMRC cannot then look into or ask for further details, but can still open an enquiry if they can show they have made a “discovery”.

NOVEMBER 2014

HANDY NUMBERS • A NUMBER FOR E APPROVED TRADERS

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer Aries March 21-April 20 It may be hard to put into words quite how you are feeling right now, but do try; a loved one close by is trying to help, but they need to hear things from you first, once you’ve started the ball rolling, you’ll be amazed at how everything falls into place.

Taurus April 21-May21 Setbacks and delays are inevitable this month, just keep your cool, otherwise your temper could overshadow what you are really trying to do, whatever you do, don’t get emotional, a clear head is key for your success. Gemini May 22-June 22 Your home and domestic life will be at the forefront this month, and certain discussions are impossible to avoid. Now is not the time to bury your head and live in a dream world, in order to progress positively you must tackle what is staring you right in the face. Cancer June 23-July 23 A fabulous opportunity to spread your wings and dip your toe in a new line of work should not be missed, this is the start of something very good indeed! A new romantic encounter with someone of a like mind will put your head in a spin, enjoy the attention, it is long overdue. Leo July 24-August 23 The planets are strongly placed in your sign this month, affording you the opportunity to transform and change whatever has been bothering you or holding you back. If you are keen to broaden your horizons, either with travel and education, this is the month to set the ball rolling. Virgo August 24-September 23 A change of direction regarding a property or house move will yield fantastic results, look closer to home for the solution. A family member will do themselves no favours as they attempt to pull the wool over your eyes, do not get roped into helping them out of their financial commitments. Libra September 24-October 23 If you are in a quandary regarding your love life, a decision will soon be made. However, it is essential to remember that the grass is not always greener, in fact its full of people muck spreading and only too happy to tell you what you want to hear, stop and think before you leap. Scorpio October 24-November 22 It is with renewed energy and vigour that you begin this month, after a seemingly long wait, you can finally see success and light at the end of the tunnel, you do however, have a particular way of doing things, it’s either your way, or no way. Sagittarius November 23-December 21

Paperwork and small print regarding applications and legal documents require your full attention, a fabulous new opportunity you have been yearning for is yours for the taking. Enjoy this moment. Holiday plans will be up for discussion the question is, where will you go?

Capricorn December 22-January 20

This is a very productive month for you, with work opportunities taking precedence, you will be in demand and run off your feet. You may ned to delegate some tasks so as to free up your time, accept that they may not get done as quickly as you like, but by doing so it allows you to do what you do best.

Aquarius January 21-February 19 Your expectations are quite high right now and this could be dangerous for those around you, ease off the pedal slightly if you don’t want your plans to go off the rails. Keep sight of your serious goals as getting distracted will be a costly price to pay in more ways than one. Keep a tight rein on finances after the middle of the month as you could get carried away with unnecessary and extravagant spending. A Close family member will astound you with their achievements, this could be cause for a celebration all round!
