May bulletin from

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service

Community News

YG

The fire service needs volunteers in your village! Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service Community Champions scheme has been running for two years and now more volunteers are being recruited. The Champions promote fire safety in their communities by attending local events to promote fire safety, talk to local groups and organisations, and also refer vulnerable people to CFRS for home fire safety visits. So could you help your community stay fire safe? Find out more by contacting Rachael Brown on 01353 865037 or email Rachael.brown@cambsacre.org.uk. Make sure fire safety still stays at the forefront of your mind in May – and don’t forget to test your smoke alarm and the smoke alarms of the vulnerable and elderly in your neighbourhood. £3,500 for local charities, thanks to on-call crew! Yaxley’s on-call fire-fighters have raised £3,500 for charity following an annual festive event. The Yaxley Christmas Ride brought festive cheer to the village streets in December, and this week the four benefiting charities have each been presented with a cheque. The Fire Fighters Charity, Yaxley Scouts and Guides, SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society), and FASD (Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) have each received £875. The on-call firefighters from the village’s station have run the annual sleigh ride through the streets of Yaxley for more than 40 years and were thrilled once again by the community’s generosity.

New fire engine for Yaxley Yaxley Fire Station is one of the first on-call crews at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) in more than three decades to receive a brand new fire engine.

Once again the week-long event was a great success with dozens of families coming out each night to support us along the route. We’re really thrilled to have raised £3,500 for these worthwhile local charities. Organiser Organiser Colin Colin Duff, Duff, Fire-fighter Fire-fighter at at Yaxley Yaxley Fire Fire Station Station

The new appliance, costing approximately £240,000, is called a light rescue pump and was delivered to the station on March 25. Although it looks very similar to a traditional fire engine, carrying 1,800 litres of water and a variety of ladders, it also holds additional equipment that provides an enhanced rescue capability for road traffic collisions, and will enable an improved service to rural communities. Area Commander Maurice Moore said: “This is the first time in many years that we’ve been in a position to offer the best available appliances to our on-call staff and this is thanks to our progressive approach to managing our resources and making efficient savings. Providing this cutting-edge equipment, appliances and training for our staff shows our dedication to continue to strive and develop and in turn, means the residents of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will receive the best fire cover we can offer.” The light rescue pump, which replaces the older fire engine, provides the on-call crew with new pieces of kit to assist with road traffic collisions and rescues, which include air mats, rams, specialist stabilising equipment, an electrically operated vehicle-mounted winch and a HGV platform.

Police want to give young people

A VOICE

Police in Huntingdonshire are looking for young people aged between 16 and 20 to form a voluntary Youth Advisory Group (YAG). Officers are looking for young people who are keen, committed and who have an interest in making a positive contribution to their community. The group will meet in Huntingdon every other month to provide an opportunity for young people from various communities to come together to speak directly with police officers and raise the profile of young people within the community. Group members will be expected to contribute their time, energy and commitment to the scheme and share their personal knowledge, awareness and experience of community issues with the group. They will also be expected to provide advice to officers to help monitor and improve the quality of policing they deliver and to help them understand the issues affecting young people.

PCSO Clare Darbyshire, YAG Leader, said: “We currently have three people aged between 17 and 21 on the committee but are looking to expand on this to enable us to improve what we do and reach a greater part of the community.

Sunday May 4th Car Boot Sale St Marys Close Farcet are holding a Car boot /Yard Sale on Sunday May 4th from 10-00 am until 4pm. This is being organised by Alan Riddell with the permission of Luminous Housing Association, only for the residents of our Close, which I am hoping will help to promote a good neighbourhood spirit amongst us all. Alan can be contacted on 07867662251

“It is important to us that we increase confidence in the police among young people because their voice is often unheard. This will give them the opportunity to speak directly to police officers and partner agencies and express their views, challenge the views of other people in a constructive way and engage with members of the community. It will also allow them to raise the profile of young people.

Baby and Toddler Event Nearly New Sale

“We provide training to group members to help them understand how policing works so that they can contribute to the policing debate. We also train them on committee skills such as minute taking and how to chair meetings.”

For more information about the group please contact PCSO Darbyshire via email at clare.darbyshire@cambs.pnn.police.uk

Hello everyone. I’m Lauren and I have recently been appointed as the Interpretation and Community Officer at the Great Fen.

Project This means that I’m able to inform everyone about the exiting work that’s going on locally to support our wildlife, heritage and education in the Great Fen area. Working with the Great Fen Team and the fantastic team of volunteers we are able to inspire people about the aims we have for the future on what is an amazing living landscape. I stared as a volunteer myself, the first task being to clear out a dreadful smelling pond! It didn’t put me off though and three years later here I am now working as part of the team. So what’s happening? I must tell you about the new area of the Great Fen: Engine Farm. This year the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded us a further £1.8million to restore the 182 hectares at Engine Farm and create an amazing

Holme Afternoon Tea Club

Huntingdonshire veteran receives war medals nearly 70 years after Second World War! Jim Chapman, of Holmewood, Holme, was presented with the Defence Medal, the 19391945 Star, the Africa Star and the War Medal, as well as his veteran’s badge at RAF Wyton yesterday (Tuesday) by Group Captain John Rolf. Mr Chapman joined the RAF in 1939, signing up before his 20th birthday. If he has waited until after his birthday, he could have been sent to any service and, as he couldn’t swim, he said he wanted to avoid the navy. He was helped by his neighbour Stan Kaye who, when he discovered Mr Chapman did not have any medals, worked to get the former lance corporal in the RAF the recognition his service deserved. Mr Chapman, 93, who was born in Great Gidding, said that he had not claimed his medals because he was still abroad when others were requesting their decorations. “I’m over the moon to have received my medals,” he said. “It’s all down to Stan why I have received them now”.

A formal afternoon tea was taken in the splendour of Holmewood Hall this month. Formerly the home of the Wells family and Squire Fielden, the house is now run as a conference centre by British Sugar. Many of our members had memories of the rather eccentric Squire Fielden and the times when the bulk of the village population was employed by or tenants of the Holmewood estate. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday May 14th at 2.30pm at Holme Village Hall when there will be a talk on Ramsey Rural Museum.

Holme WI At our April meeting Chris Bylett entertained us with his many talents, he was helped with his assistant Charlie who was happy to be able to be realised from his box and come and meet us all. Some of our members helped him with his tricks that also included nails, cards, cutlery and water. There was a rush to help when he produced a pair of handcuffs only then to find out they were horse shoes. Chris finished the evening treating us all to some songs with his excellent voice. Our meeting for May will be on Thursday 1st at the Village hall in Holme 7.30pm, the speaker will be Phillip Whaites who will be informing us about his time as a gardener at Wimpole Hall, visitors are always welcome, come along and get some ideas for your own garden!

Farcet & District Gardening Club invites you to join them “We are a local Community Gardening Club discussing all aspects of gardening, allotments and nature. It’s free to all, everyone welcome, from the novice to the expert, regardless of age, gender or ability. “ Their community garden project has a wildlife area, a wildlife pond, a formal garden, herbs & soon medicinal plants. Some members are also looking for a piece of land/allotment in Yaxley to develop as a community. The Club meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 19:30 at The Village Club, Cross St, Farcet, PE7 3DE & 1st Saturday of the month, 11am to 1pm at The Community Garden, the rear of the Village Hall, Main St, and Farcet. They are also meeting in Yaxley, at the Lancaster Club, dates to be confirmed. “Feel free to drop by, it’s a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and share knowledge and maybe even become fitter.” Alternatively you can find them on Facebook Thanks go to Club supporters; CP Learning Trust, Farcet Community Association, Dobbies, B & Q, Cllr Chris York & Cllr Alan Clark. CloseConnections

Photo by Richard Houghton, Photous Photography, Farcet.

CloseConnections commenced in 2005 and several couples who met through the group remain together. We hold activities where members can mingle and get to know one another within approximately a 20mile radius of Peterborough. Single women may find it difficult to go for a woodland walk or restaurants meals on their own whilst men who work predominantly with other men appreciate female company. Some members seek a partner, friendship, whilst some simply like going out as a group or enjoy good food. Care & confidentiality always assured.

Twice yearly itineraries contain weekly events. The belonging charge reduces and £25 is the highest payment for belonging since the very beginning of an itinerary. Members may bring a friend twice. We are well looked after by restaurants who appreciate our regular custom, however new venues are frequently introduced. No extra charge for one to one introductions

With thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, administered by English Heritage, in conjunction with local residents organising a myriad of different fund-raising events in the village, plus receiving several charitable donations, sufficient funds have been raised to start repairing this eleventh century church. The Vicar, The Revd. Anne Shorter, explained,

CLOSECONNECTIONS Cambs, Lincs & Northants

“Back in the 1100s, the people of Farcet built their first church. Parts of this building can be seen today because this was the beginning of St Mary’s, our existing village church. It has seen so much activity over the centuries; Christenings, marriages, and of course, village funerals. But it also would have been the place where legal documents were signed, meetings of the village took place, things were bought and sold, sad and happy times celebrated and of course, centuries of prayer and worship.

• Meals • Bar Nights • Bowling • Walks • Pub Lunches

Due to a variety of factors, which led to the drying out of the underlying clay soil, dangerous cracks appeared in the walls. These have been monitored for some years now and, with the help of a conservation architect, a large repair grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund administered by English Heritage was obtained. This is very, very good news.”

Whilst the repair work is completed, church services are being held at the local school in St Mary’s Street. Building work on the church is expected to be completed by the end of June 2014 and everyone is welcome to come and join in celebrating the re-opening of this wonderful church.

Green Day

Plant Sale

Call for volunteers at Flag Fen Archaeology Park!

Saturday 10th May; 10.00am to 2.00pm

Do you want to become part of a fantastic team of volunteers, who give up their time and share their skills to make a difference? Vivacity’s Flag Fen Archaeology Park is looking for willing volunteers, so don’t miss out – join up today!

We will have a great selection of home-grown bedding plants for sale, as well as perennials, vegetables, trees etc. If you have any spare plants, just bring them along. There will also be stalls and refreshments.

Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people, gain work experience, and to develop new skills. This is a very special opportunity to get involved with the finest Bronze Age archaeological site in Northern Europe, home to the prehistoric Must Farm boats, which were recently discovered in Whittlesey.

Our annual Green Day Plant Sale is a brilliant way to stock up on plants, with friendly advice, as well as being one of the social highlights of the year and a great fund-raiser!

This year, as a special treat, there will be a talk by Michael Perry, New Product Development Manager for Thompson and Morgan, at 2.00pm. Michael Perry is Thompson & Morgan’s very own plant hunter. This stimulating talk, which starts with a brief history of Thompson and Morgan, then gives information on a wealth of exciting plants, lasts one hour. There will be unlimited time for questions afterwards. Michael will bring a range of Thompson and Morgan literature, an extra special raffle prize and an exclusive competition for each member to enter. Tickets for the talk will be £2.00 each – and your ticket is also your raffle ticket. Contact Fran Russell on 244493 or fran@lancersgap.co.uk

Yaxley Gazette

“Flag Fen is a fantastic place to volunteer because it is such a unique, world-renowned site,” explains Gill Benedikz, Vivacity’s Volunteer Development Manager. “There’s also a wide range of roles available to suit all interests.”

Vivacity is looking for a team of special volunteers to help visitors enjoy and understand the site. In particular, this notfor-profit organisation is looking for Front of House volunteers, who will welcome visitors to the site and help in the café and shop. Flag Fen also requires a team of volunteer Archaeological Dig Tent supervisors. Volunteers prepare the mock dig site, and educate young archaeologists in methods and finds. In addition to this, Flag Fen is also searching for volunteers who can be Pond Dipping Supervisors to help families appreciate the wildlife and habitats on site.

For more information about volunteering at Flag Fen and to register your interest, call 01733 864 775 or email volunteering@vivacity-peterborough.com. Visit the website at www.vivacity-peterborough.com

When parents separate, what happens to the children? When a couple separate decisions have to be made as to what is best for the children of the family. Ideally parents would reach agreement between themselves, but that is not always possible and sometimes parents need help. There are several ways parents can try to reach an agreement over arrangements for their children such as: Solicitor Negotiation - where each parent instructs a solicitor to enter into negotiations on their behalf in the hope of reaching a mutual agreement;

Mediation - where an independent mediator holds a number of meetings with the parents to assist them to agree arrangements directly; Court proceedings - sometimes required to resolve disputes between parents but always considered as the absolute last resort. Abby Smith of Setfords Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting parents to reach a swift, amicable agreement which protects their own relationship as co-parents for the future but also each parents’ own relationship with the children. St Peter’s Church 6. mow lawn

Expenditure on cookery books is apparently at record levels and cookery programmes in various formats are among the most popular on television. However, according to some research I came across recently, the average evening meal in Britain takes just 34 minutes to prepare down from an hour in the 1980s. The average person knows just 4 recipes. Perhaps we prefer to talk about or read about doing things, but not actually do them. I’ve been talking about giving our lawn its first cut of the year for nearly a month and still haven’t got the mower out of the garage!

Please contact me or visit our website at www.saintpeters.co.uk for more details. Also, I am delighted that St Peter’s will again have a stall at Yaxley Festival on Saturday May 17th and Sunday 18th. YG Stanground Academy

Charity Fashion Show On Friday 7th March, the Stanground Academy hosted its first fashion show. The show was organised by the staff and students of the business department, under the leadership of Jilly-Marie Kelly and students; Kirsty Hall, Lauren Wilson, Vicky Cox and Katie Magnus. Showcasing both the work of Alison Spataro’s Hair and Beauty students and the fruits of the Academy’s Performing Arts scene, it was a joyful celebration of talent and self-expression. As final preparations were being made backstage, the steadily growing crowd was welcomed with a set from a perfectly synced three-piece band. A pared-back cover of Valerie, conjuring images of a bee-hived, red-lipped Amy Winehouse, gave a taste of the sixties vibe that the Academy’s hairstylists and make-up artists would soon be serving up. But before their models took to the catwalk, there was to be another brilliant performance – this time from the five-strong Harmony Majorettes. It was clear, long before their backing track changed to that Bastille hit, that their energetic batontwirling display would set the rhythm of the night. Three more breathtaking pieces by the Academy’s performing arts students – an African dance group’s offering and two solo dances - punctuated the catwalk spectacle. Its first cohort of models – decked out in pieces from The Party Shop and made up by Hair

and Beauty students – provided a 20th century retrospective, evoking Hairspray’s 1960s Baltimore or the rebellious cool of Cyndi Lauper. Next came a parade of young men and women in evening wear: the former sporting the neat, lustrous crops of Disney princes; the latter hair jewellery and side-swept curls. Closing the show was an eclectic but fascinating series of looks, bringing onto our collective fashion radar everything from traditional saris to Gaga-esque towering headdresses. No less stunning than such avantgarde styling or the flawless dance routines, however, was the community spirit to be seen that night at the Stanground Academy. A number of students volunteered to model their friends’ work; many more turned out to support them. A dozen or more teachers took to the catwalk and their willingness to get involved with their students’ projects (poking

fun at themselves along the way) was recognised with thunderous applause. Even the Principal, Ged Rae, did a turn modelling. Headto-toe in Scottish national dress, he brought students to their feet, cheering and laughing, with a traditional jig. And the appreciation was clearly mutual. Mr Rae said that it was events like these that made him proud to be the Principal at the Stanground Academy. Students were told that they were ‘a credit to the team that work with them and to themselves’. Yaxley Infant School The mystery of whether Humpty Dumpty fell or was he pushed is finally solved! You will have to ask some of the children if you really want to know the truth! The ‘Crimes and Misdemeanours’ from many nursery rhyme characters running around school made for fun and exciting times, the children loved dressing up as their favourite characters and it made for a very memorable end to our whole school theme of Nursery Crimes. Last month, I told you that we were taking part in a music festival at the Cresset theatre. The show was magnificent and a huge number of children took part from twelve local schools. (Of course, we stole the show. I am not biased at all!) This term, our whole school theme is ‘Healthy body, happy body’. We are preparing for a visit from Captain Carrot, the healthy eating super hero. He will help us to think carefully about where our food comes from, what we need to eat to stay fit and healthy, how our bodies work and many more activities to help us be active, healthy and happy. We will be taking part in the Yaxley Festival and have planned some healthy activities to keep you all moving! Come and see us at the festival.

We have been very active this term and have enjoyed many different activities, such as scooter and BMX days, Fencing and Zumba.

The William de Yaxley Junior School Simply amazing! Over a hundred mums joined us in our “Bring Your Mum to School Day.” Mums, Grandmas and female carers were invited by the children to spend half a day in class with them as part of celebrating Mothering Sunday. They got very involved in craft activities such as making masks, Easter baskets and scones and Year 6 tested their maths knowledge. The children put together a varied assembly entertaining mums with a play, reciting acrostic poems they had written and singing Mr Blue Sky. Dads, you haven’t been forgotten; wait to see what we have lined up for you! A BIG thank-you to the staff at the Bollywood Tiger restaurant in Main Street, Yaxley. As part of Year 4’s topic on India, they invited the children to their restaurant, showing them around it and the kitchen, where they made and introduced the children to the delicious tastes of this vast country. Following the visit, the manager came into school helping the children broaden their cooking skills further by making more dishes, including some very tasty chapattis. Cardea was the venue for this year’s Church schools Year 3 RE day where our younger

children took part in various activities and made lots of new friends. The children have been involved in lots of sporting activities, both in and outside school, against other local schools. These include cross country, netball, football and dodgeball. Years 3 and 5 were treated to a professional performance of “The Adventures of Perseus” followed by a workshop, which further immersed them in their topics on the Ancient Greeks and Myths and Legends. Sadly we say good-bye to Mrs Hannah Foot and Mr Shaun Noyes who have been part of our school for the last 13 years and 7 years respectively. We would like to wish them all the best for the future; we have some very fond memories of their time with us. Mrs Pinfold will also start her maternity leave after the Easter break. Lastly, we are very pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs Kay Corley as our new Head Teacher. Kay joined us in January as interim head and decided to stay with us. She has big plans for our school so watch this space!

Our Netball Team and Football Team have also been participating in tournaments and our Golf Club had a visit to the Orton Meadows Pitch and Putt site. Stilton Primary School

Holme Village Pre-School

We rounded off our term at Stilton Primary School with an RE day to celebrate Easter.

As we head into our final week of term the children are having lots of Easter fun.

The children took part in different activities, including making crosses out of different materials, acting out bible stories and using percussion instruments to learn about Christian music. Some children also planted new flowers in our Peace Garden. We also had our annual Easter Service in the church. It was wonderful to see so many of the children’s grownups there too! Children representing each class took part in the service, including reading bible stories, showing art work and talking about the meaning of Easter. Later in the day, FoSS (Friends of Stilton School) organised our annual Easter Egg hunt. The children were mixed up and split into small groups, with each Year 6 child being the team leader. The children had to work together to find letters around the playground that spelt out a secret message. We had a special visit from the Easter bunny as well!

Yaxley Gazette

They have enjoyed going on egg hunts locally and decorating boxes to collect their treasure in. They were also able to go inside a chicken pen and collect some freshly laid real eggs which were a new experience for all of them. Next term we will be focusing on the ‘World Cup’ taking a different country each week and looking at what they are famous for. For example with Africa this will allow us to look at wild animals and different celebrations they have whilst Italy will be food themed with pizza and pasta. Finally, a reminder our next fundraiser is a fun pub quiz at the Admiral Wells on Friday 9th May at 7.30pm, different rounds to test everyone. If you would like to enter a team please email us on holmepreschool@yahoo.co.uk

Another busy month at Stretton! As mentioned in last month’s Gazette our Fourfields site had taken part in a ‘Pirates and Princesses’ week in aid of the charity Crackerjacks, we are pleased to announce that we raised £235.66! Thank you to all that sponsored/donated. It’s that time of year again that sees our headstart children allocated their primary school places and start the preparations for starting school, a very exciting but nerve wracking time for parents and children alike and we hope that we can make the transition a smooth one. This means that we will have spaces for both sites available for September; we also take funded 2 year olds. We welcome drop in sessions so you and your child can come and meet the staff and see the site in action. Proud to support the

Following an audacious debut in 2013, the Yaxley Festival returns this May with an extra day, more live music and even more community involvement. With the generous support of Yaxley Parish Council and the local business community, the event takes place in the heart of the village at the Middletons Road Recreation Ground from the 16th to 18th of May. Once again live music and entertainment collides with community, living history, sport and village tradition in an event that promises to deliver a fantastic weekend of family fun. This year the Festival Committee is working in partnership with Stanground Academy, who are creating their own zone to showcase the school and its students. New for this year is a second stage, which the Academy will share with our local schools to provide even more opportunities for the youth of the village to perform and have fun.

May can be a lovely month for gardeners; there are a wide variety of plants available for planting up hanging baskets and containers. These will grace your gardens and patios right up until the first frost, whilst forming a lovely backdrop for enjoying your BBQ. When planting up your containers, do not think that you always have to have mixed plantings, as in many cases, only one subject can look immaculate. It is very difficult to have a favourite in the basket plant range, as the world’s plant breeders have done an excellent job in breeding an enormous range of beautiful plants. Here are just a few:

Begonias The begonia illumination range is full of cracking plants, consisting of many colours; giving a beautiful, brightly coloured array of pendulous flowers that are always admired.

Bicep The bacopa is another favourite to use in baskets and patio containers, as it is easy to grow and full of vigour; a plant that rarely fails to please and looks excellent in mixed plantings. The bacopa is now available in several colours and if you have not used it before, it is well worth trying.

Calibrachoa More often known as “Million Bells” which is the marketing name of one breeder’s plants, they look absolutely fabulous flowering and do so all summer long. There are vibrant colours from whites through to yellows, reds and purples. It is worth mentioning here that it is advisable not to over water these. They are available in trailing and compact types, look impressive and are sure to impress the neighbours.

YG Diascia This is a spectacular performer, establishing quickly and flowering continuously. Two of the best varieties in my experience are “Little Dancer” and “Scented Lady” which, as the name suggests, is highly scented.

Fuchsia

Everyone is well aware of the beauty of the fuchsia, with some of the best performers being “Blue Angel”, “Dark Eyes” and “Millennium”.

Geraniums

Geraniums are such tough, floriferous plants, with a wide variation of foliage and colours, both trailing and upright. A really good variety is one called “Abeline”, which is vivid red and has dark foliage.

Sunpatiens

This is a Japanese bred impatien, which is highly weather resistant and will continue growing in full sun and shade, and is truly spectacular.

Trailing Petunias

There are new coiours being brought out each year. Older varieties; such as “sky blue” and hot pink, the tumbelina range; such as Priscilla “scented” purple flash and candy floss are all great performers, with a good, lengthy trail. Trailing petunias require regular deadheading but if you find the dead flowers to be sticky, wet your hands before you begin.

Verbena

These are really good trailing plants and deserve to be used more often. There are several colours available and look really good in mixed baskets.

And remember...”God made rainy days so gardeners can get their houseworkdone!”

Cheese Rolling has become an annual May Day event in Stilton. Hundreds of villagers and visitors throng the wide main street to enjoy traditional Bank Holiday entertainments and watch the teams battling for the Stilton Cheese Rolling trophies.

How did it all start? It would be nice to be able to say that the event is “as old as the village” or that its origins have been lost in “the mists of time” but really no one knows how far back the tradition of rolling cheese goes.

The event is also our village festival, with Maypole dancing, live music, traditional Fenland ‘Molly’ dancing and other entertainment. There are sideshows, fairground rides, stalls, a wide choice of food and drink, and a concert in the evening.

By mid-20th century, Stilton had become a rather quiet place having been by-passed by the A1. The inns and businesses had seen a big drop in their trade, so the enterprising landlord of one of the pubs decided to revive an ancient tradition. Or so he told everyone! He could be seen rolling a Stilton Cheese along the road outside his pub. People came to stand and watch and eventually joined in. And so the sport began - again.

It was originally run on Easter Monday and there was not a lot of uniformity to it to begin with. It seems a piece of wood in the shape of a Stilton cheese was produced, a starting line drawn up somewhere between the The Stilton Cheese Inn and The Talbot and the finish line was outside The Bell Inn. Brave teams of Stilton men would then vie to roll the cheese to its finish and, after the ensuing scramble, and many tussles and spills, the team that ended up steering the cheese to the finishing line would win! Nowadays, the starting point is always outside The Bell Inn and The Angel and the finish is a line drawn at the cross roads between the bottom of Fen Street and Church Street. The contestants compete in teams of four, either all men, all women or mixed juniors. Each team member has to roll the cheese at least once during its flight. It’s a knockout competition with quarters, semis and a grand final.

To To gym or

by ‘the anonymous gym buddy’.

So, I have had a little blip in my ‘get fit challenge’; unfortunately, I pulled a ligament in my knee, but rest assured it’s not stopping me. I can’t partake in spinning (boo hoo) but Mo has been doing lots of upper body work, so I am still keeping fit and training hard!

not to gym? My personal training sessions, with the wonderful Mo, are going from strength to strength and so am I. We had an 8 week weight and measurement update and I was pleasantly surprised; I have lost 12lbs, my body fat has dropped by 4%, I have lost 7 inches off my waist and 5 off my hips, so all the hard work is paying off and I feel so much better in myself. A quick update on my other half; he has finally signed up! He has been so impressed with my personal trainer sessions that he has booked his own and if you think personal trainers are just for celebrities, think again, 5 personal trainer sessions cost just £99. The Vivacity Premier Fitness Gym has a real buzz about it. Not only is it a great place to get fit, it’s also a great place to meet new people and if, after a workout, you fancy a coffee and a slice of cake (whoops) they have an onsite Cafe. This has been a really good experience for me. It’s made me realise that the gym is not a ‘no-go’ area and if I pick the classes that I enjoy, I am more motivated to attend them. I would never have had a personal trainer before, but since having Mo work with me, my perception of personal trainers has changed. Yes, I still call him names at each session, but he has worked on my overall fitness and I am now friends with my core, which in turn is making me a lot stronger. If you fancy joining me and some wonderful gym buddies check out vivacity-peterborough.com/premierfitness or call 01733 864000. A big ‘thank you’ to Premier Fitness for working with me on this challenge and a massive shout out to Mo, without whom I think I would have left after a week!

Let’s get body beautiful The Beautiful Day Spa & Beauty Salon are now offering a laser clinic, and it’s not just about hair removal, they offer much more. Ultrasonic Cavitation Permanent Fat Reduction

Our new revolutionary, non surgical fat removal procedure makes it easy to contour and sculpt your body into the shape you always wanted. There is no surgery, no anaesthesia, no hospital stay, no time off and no recovery time. Ultrasonic is the perfect treatment for women or men who want to contour their body and regain their confidence. You will see an immediate change in your appearance after your first session, with optimum results after 8 to 12 sessions.

How does it work?

Ultrasonic therapy forces a powerful soundwave to the fat cell membranes. The fat cell membrane succumbs to the pressure, is reduced to liquid and is expelled through the body’s normal metabolic method. Ultrasonic Cavitation destroys fat cells at such a rate and in such a quantity that fat storage is significantly reduced or eliminated. You will see the results and notice an increase in your body’s fat cell metabolism. After the first treatment, you will experience a reduction of several centimetres in circumference and additional results after the next visit and longer. Age, metabolism, changes in hormones, medications, tissue structure and treatment area will have an impact on the results. To maintain the results, it is important to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly. You will find the treatment comfortable and trouble free. You may experience warmth during the treatment and a small amount of noise discomfort, but there is no pain.

Beautiful Day Spa and Beauty Salon offers many treatments and some that you won’t find anywhere locally. For example, Ultrasonic Cavitation Permanent Fat reduction and Lunchtime Face Lift, visit our website for a full list of treatments. 30

A little success story by Hayley Burroughs

I have lived in Yaxley all my life and started running Paw2Paw Dog Grooming 4 years ago. I have always loved dogs, so what could be better than doing something I love as a job?

So Paw2Paw came alive, and every day is different, each dog is different, just like their owners! I trained long and hard to achieve what I was passionate about and I qualified with a distinction in dog grooming. Each dog is treated to a pamper session when they arrive at Paw 2 Paw, they can have just a wash and massage or a full groom which includes a wash, massage, clipping, nails, teeth, Eyes, Ears and glands Starting price is £22 to £30 depending of size and coat type. All visitors at Paw2Paw have the run of a lovely big garden and play before they have a groom. I have a dog called Roxy (Westie) and she is everything to me, she also loves playing with all our visitors. We offer a family friendly service to your lovable pets. We also offer a doggy day care service; where your dog can come, play and chill. On another note, I am also supporting a charity called Little People UK. ‘Positively Unique’ helps little people with dwarfism to achieve what they want to do in life and be proud of their success. I started my own business as Dog Groomer and haven’t looked back!

Happy bunnies Diet Rabbits are ‘fibrevores’ - fibre is essential for a rabbit’s dental, digestive and emotional health. A good quality hay and/or grass should make up the majority of their diet and should be available to them at all times. Rabbits’ teeth grow constantly and they need to continuously chew on grass to keep their teeth from overgrowing and causing damage to their mouths. In the wild 70% of rabbits’ time above ground is spent searching for grass, hay, plants, herbs and bark to eat. This foraging behaviour keeps rabbits busy, stimulated and exercised. So the right diet is essential to rabbits’ emotional happiness.

Health Rabbits can be prone to some health issues which can prove challenging to treat, but can often be easily prevented if you know how. Good care, appropriate feeding and other appropriate measures such as vaccination are key. We can vaccinate against two infectious diseases which sadly often prove fatal - Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD). This can be done with a single vaccination by your Vet once a year where your rabbit’s general health can also be checked. Now that the weather is warming up another danger rabbit’s face is ‘Flystrike’, this occurs when the rabbit’s rear end becomes soiled

with faeces and/or urine which attracts flies to lay eggs on damaged skin or on the soiled fur. These eggs then hatch into maggots that eat away at the tissues in the surrounding area and release toxins which makes the rabbit unwell. It can be prevented by keeping the rabbits and their environment clean and dry and checking them daily for signs of flies. Insect repellents are also available from your Vets.

YG

Rabbit Awareness Week

Pets

People often think that all they have to do to take care of a rabbit is to give them a clean hutch in the garden with food and water. To have a happy healthy bunny, however, they need so much more.

10-18th May Come along to have a FREE rabbit health checks by one of our qualified nurses at any of our surgeries.

Rabbit Healthcare Plan at Cromwell Vets You may also be interested in our specially designed Rabbit Healthcare Plan – all the preventative healthcare your rabbit needs for the year ahead for just £70, saving you ££. The Plan includes a combination vaccine, worming treatment, flystrike prevention and unlimited Nurse Clinic appointments.

Environment Did you know that a wild rabbit’s territory is equivalent to 30 tennis courts? Running around such a large areas keeps them fit and healthy, so we need to give our pet rabbits the opportunity to have lots of exercise too. It’s important that your rabbits have plenty of space to run around, leap, dig, frolic and graze, because this is what happy rabbits like to do. A secure exercise run or enclosure will allow your rabbits to exercise, graze and play safely.

Did you know that a wild rabbit’s territory is equivalent to 30 tennis courts?

The general rule for the size of the smallest run advisable should be big enough for your rabbit to hop across three times and stand without their ears touching the top. Preferably, the run should be placed in the garden so the rabbits can enjoy the grass as they would in the wild.

Who is the Yaxley Gazette Blogger? Drew Pontikis has been a Yaxley resident for the past 6 years, and has two young sons to keep him busy. He works as an Analyst in Orton Southgate, but dreams of becoming a writer.

BLOG Whilst I don’t want to be the grumpy old man any more than I already am, I can’t help but notice that there isn’t all that much in Yaxley for teenagers to do. Instead of doing what all good teenagers should do (hide in their bedrooms all day listening to awful music), they’re knocking about outside the Co-op, hogging the swings in the parks and loitering in bus stops. It’s not their fault obviously; that’s what we all did as teenagers, try and find a little haven where everyone else is as equally misunderstood by society. Even so, when I take my kids to the park, it would be nice if they could get on the swings without having to fight through a wall of Jack Wills hoodies and melodrama.

Steaming ahead! The Iron ladies (Julie and Nicky) based in Yaxley have seen their business grow from strength to strength in the last few years, so much so that they now have new premises, Julie and Nicky both local Yaxley girls have converted their garage to accommodate their business needs.

Fortunately, I have the answer. You know that bit of grass where the sheltered housing used to be off Broadway? I think we should set up a shelter, maybe a permanent gazebo type thing, and fill it with benches. What’s that you say – we already have benches? True, however we should add in the one thing that lures teenagers like moths to a flame and bees to a picnic...Free WiFi. Build a free WiFi hotspot, and trust me they will come. All will sit in peace and harmony, Facebooking each other from opposite benches, filming Vines of themselves taking selfies and playing their utterly dreadful music through tinny sounding phone speakers.

The The Iron Iron Ladies Ladies are are aa limited limited company company and and ifif you you need need any any further further information information you you can can fifind nd their their advert advert in in the the Handy Handy Numbers Numbers on on page page 37 37

Sell your items for free by simply emailing a brief description and attaching a photo if possible, to editorial@stangroundgazette.co.uk Picture it – parents need never worry about where their kids are; they will ONLY be here. As I understand it, the police have little trouble from the youth of today in Yaxley, but as they can see them from their upstairs window they don’t even have to go out to check on them. People like me can take our children to the park and play on the swings, and most of all, the teenagers have got the thing they covet even more than cider. Everybody’s happy, the world is a better place...and I can finally play on the roundabout without being laughed at.

MONEY MATTERS

by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants

Ifyouhaveanytaxorbusinessquestions, pleaseemailPeteBirdofBird&Co info@birdnco.co.uk and if of general interest, it will be published here!

Taxation Question: I understand George Osborne promised in the budget that Class 2 National Insurance would be paid through SelfAssessment rather than separately – is this correct? Answer: Yes this is correct, but what he didn’t say was that this won’t be introduced until April 2016, so you will have to continue paying as usual for another two more years. Class 2 National Insurance Contributions (NICs) are paid by self-employed tax payers who pay this as a flat weekly rate (currently £2.75) unless they qualify for the small earnings exemption or other exemptions which remove the necessity to pay NICs. You should also note that starting from the tax year 2014-2015, that HMRC can collect outstanding Class 2 NICs by adjusting a taxpayer’s tax code or by passing the debt onto a specialist private debt collection company.

News No Income Tax On Director And Employee Loans Up To £10,000 The limit has increased to £10,000 from 6 April 2014 (previously £5,000) for cheap or interest free loans to directors and employees. This means that such loans will not need to be reported on form P11D and there will be no income tax or national insurance liability on loans up to the new limit. However, there may be a 25% corporation tax charge payable by the company if the loan is to a shareholder and is still outstanding nine months after the end of the accounting period. Employers should note that HMRC is changing the way they charge interest on unpaid PAYE from 6 April 2014, so you should ensure PAYE is always paid by the due dates. Our monthly newsletters always show these as “dates to remember”.

Dates to remember: 1 May 2014 - Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 July 2013. 19 May 2014 - PAYE and NIC deductions due for month ended 5 May 2014. By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

After the recent turn of events that you have been faced with you may be experiencing more hassle from other people than you bargained for, but keep your cool and chose your words carefully. Financial matters will need your full attention.

Taurus April 21-May21 This is a month of extremes, and you’ll need to be ready for anything and anyone! Don’t underestimate your powers of persuasion as you may need to talk yourself out of a tight corner. Finances are on the up by the end of the month. Gemini May 22-June 22 At last you will feel as though you can finally see a way forward and start putting some firm and exciting plans in place. If moving or improving your house, expect quick and speedy results, just watch out for hidden costs you hadn’t factored in. Cancer June 23-July 23 You are discovering who your real and genuine friends actually are right now and you may be somewhat surprised; you are surrounded by people who want to help and support, as you have been through a challenging time recently, but rest assured, things can only get better now. Leo July 24-August 23 It’s life in the fast lane for you this month, you will be in much demand and possibly over stretched, make sure you take a step back and have a breather when you can. Frustration with a partner or family member will make you want to explode, speak you mind so you get a positive resolve. Virgo August 24-September 23 Disappointment over a recent turn of events has left you feeling flat, do not lose hope, there is a fantastic opportunity just around the corner that is better than you could have imagined. Whatever is meant for you will never pass you by. Libra September 24-October 23 If you need a push or even a wake up call to do something, this is it. Don’t waste anymore time pondering or contemplating, get the ball rolling now, as the success is yours for the taking. Concern over a family member or even a pets health needs sorting, do not delay.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 If you feel like your life is in limbo or ‘on hold’ fear not the oppressive fog is lifting and you will soon see a way clear. Great news concerning a matter that has recently caused sleepless nights will put a big smile on your face.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Expect plans to change especially if they concern travel or group events, so keep them as fluid as possible to avoid disappointment. Relationships will be at the forefront of your mind, be true to your feelings and emotions. Capricorn December 22-January 20 You’ll be in demand this month, both in work and socially, do not put a limit on your capabilities, as what you do at this time sets the precedence for the rest of the year. An old flame/ acquaintance may get in touch, keep your distance if you want to avoid trouble. Aquarius January 21-February 19

After a period of confusion you are craving stability but you may be beginning to wonder if you have a read a situation or person incorrectly as it/they change their mind like the wind. Exciting news regarding a work opportunity needs your full attention.

Pisces February 20-March 20 Be careful who you let back into your life as leopards do not change their spots, despite all the protests that ‘they are different now.’ Choices need to be made this month, be true to yourself and your loved ones needs.
