Yaxley grandfather invited to City College Peterborough birthday bash! City College Peterborough has been providing learning opportunities for adults and young people for the past 70 years. From apprenticeships, vocational courses, hobbies and pastimes – the college has been meeting the demands of Peterborough’s residents for seven successful decades, having first opened its doors in 1944.

Retired (or soon to be) from the NHS? Know someone who is?

To celebrate, the college is planning a year of celebrations, which kicked off with a party on May 21 – attended by 70 specially invited guests who are all 70 this year.

Then you should know about our thriving organisation – The NHS Retirement Fellowship.

They included Yaxley resident, retired civil servant and grandfather of three Fortunato Munago - who has lived in the village since 1968. As a young man of 24, Fortunato left his home and family in Sicily to make a new life in Peterborough.

We were formed almost 40 years ago to provide a caring national organisation where NHS retirees and their partners could find mutual support and companionship, whilst meeting up with old friends and making new ones.

With a wife and soon young family to support, it wasn’t just a new country, culture and surroundings that presented a barrier for the hard-working engineer. Fortunato took up a place studying English at night school at the college until 1971, whilst working full time at engineering firm Elliott Burdett, before joining Perkins Engines.

We hold a number of annual events, holidays and social meetings for members to attend and get involved in. Our monthly meetings include an interesting and varied programme of speakers.

He left Perkins in 1982, spending the next 29 years in civil servant position at the Italian Consulate in London. Having retired in 2011, Fortunato celebrates his 70th birthday this August.

We are open to all past employees, voluntary workers and those employed by companies providing services to the NHS (e.g. cleaning, catering, and voluntary workers) and their partners.

Fortunato explained: “My own determination and desire to learn English was certainly nurtured and supported by the college and I wish them all the best in their milestone year.”

Our local branch (Peterborough & District) meets in St Andrew’s UR Church hall in Ledbury Road, Netherton on the last Wednesday of each month from 2.30 pm.

Visit www.citycollegepeterborough.ac.uk or call 01733 761361 for details of courses.

An early start is paying dividends! The Captain versus the President’s match saw a record turnout, with new members participating, thereby demonstrating the success of our recruiting drive.

Holme WI Our May meeting was also our resolutions night, when this year, we voted on organ donation. All members were encouraged to make their personal feelings known to their family on this subject so that their wishes would be upheld. After this, we were treated to a fantastic talk and slide show by Phillip Whaites who is the head gardener at Wimpole Hall. Besides all of the beautiful slides of flowers, shrubs, trees and plants that he showed us, he also had pictures of parts of the garden that had been restored to their original Victorian layouts. They have also restored the original glass house, apple store and mushroom house. By the end of the night our problem was to decide the best time to visit the gardens, as there is something to see throughout the year. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 5th June at 7.30pm in Holme village hall, when Katy-Ann Mason will be talking about Puppy Walking. All visitors are welcome.

Yaxley WI Due to an unfortunate accident, we were left without a speaker for the April meeting. Instead we had a ‘sweet’ quiz (all answers being chocolate or sweet related) followed by a Beetle Drive which members enjoyed. We welcomed a new member, Chris Day, who I hope will enjoy our meetings and be with us for a very long time. At the end of April we celebrated our 96th birthday with a dinner at the Stilton Cheese and also visited the Key Theatre earlier in the month. In May, we were entertained by a longstanding member telling us about Yaxley Businesses which brought back lots of memories, and questions from people newer to the village. This was followed by an auction with lots of laughs from our very capable auctioneer Phyllis Black.

HURRY!

In June, we have professional auctioneer, Colin Young, who will be valuing members’ treasures.

Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club The Green has seen our county players hard at it, preparing for the numerous rounds to be negotiated to take them to the finals. The Ladies have already made a start on the preliminary rounds; all are fighting fit and full of confidence! We have a full programme of friendlies and 7 leagues, plus roll ups and a Saturday morning session especially for new members. Race Night: The last of our winter social events, and as popular as ever. Plenty in store for this summer though, I am sure! Recruitment Drive: Our posters, plus of course, the Yaxley Gazette and our open days are proving to be successful. The door is still open, feel free to come for a chat at any time Mitcham Cup: The first of our cup games played on a typical spring day! A gusty breeze plus the odd shower to make things interesting, was won by Robert Heath, (pictured above).

The stars of EAW return to Yaxley! EAW presents an evening of live wrestling, suitable for the whole family on Saturday 21st June! The stars of EAW are preparing for our huge return show to Yaxley Peterborough and what a night we have planned! We have as many live wrestling matches as possible all jammed into one family friendly show as possible! With a bar for the adults, hot food available, souvenirs for the kids and the chance to meet your favourite EAW wrestlers for your autographs and photos for free, you will have an amazing experience at a Live EAW show! June Bulletin from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service Barbecue Safety: The sun has finally arrived so I’m sure some residents will enjoy a tasty barbecue – but all barbecues can get out of control if care is not taken. Follow our top tips for a safe barbecue: • Place your barbecues on level ground where it will not tip over. • Site barbecues away from sheds, fences, overhanging foliage and the house. • Keep children and garden games well away from the cooking area. • Never leave barbecues unattended. • When cooking is finished, ensure the barbecue is cool before moving it • NEVER pour petrol or other highly flammable liquids over any barbecue. It’s an awesome opportunity as a young photographer to be able to get to the next milestone in my career. Our work will be on sale during the exhibition, so the fact that it is being held in London means there will be greater visibility of our work.

Baby Hats for Tanzania Amazingly we have now collected over 3,500 hats, made up 38 blankets from knitted squares and a ‘knit and natter’ group donated 175 baby jumpers. At the end of March KOFIA sent 250kg of hats to Tanzania. Thank you so much to everyone who is helping with this project! Just a reminder that we will be stopping the collection at the end of June. Newborn hypothermia is a huge problem in Tanzania. Babies born there are often sick and tired, get cold incredibly quickly and hypothermia can be fatal. If we can warm these babies they have a much better chance of being resuscitated successfully and surviving. Berega hospital is so basic there aren’t even any towels to receive babies into. Getting hats and blankets to keep these babies warm makes a huge difference - it helps to save lives. The Salvation Army are helping to distribute items to another 125 remote villages in Tanzania, as well as Berega, as the number of hats has far exceeded the needs of just one village. It is wonderful that we are able to help many more babies than originally anticipated!

PRC Student photographers to exhibit in London From 18 -24 June, 15 students studying on the Level 3 BTEC in Photography at Peterborough Regional College will be showcasing their work at Free Range at the Old Truman Brewery, in Brick Lane, London. It will be the first time that photography students from the College have exhibited their work outside of Peterborough. The students have been holding a range of fundraising activities, including a car wash and bake sale to help raise the necessary £3,500 to take part in the show. The College has also donated to their fund, but there is still some way to go to raising the total figure.

Billie Kitchener, the College’s Photography Co-ordinator, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the students. To exhibit their work alongside some of the very best universities at an internationally recognised show, will give them a great opportunity and experience that they might not otherwise have had.” Jazzmin Penney (20), from Yaxley, said: “Last year my work was exhibited at University Centre Peterborough, which was really great, but this experience will mean that more people - and importantly other photographers can see what we produce and how hard we work to produce it.” To donate to their cause, visit www.gofundme.com/7mo3p0

Yaxley Turf Law

Yaxley’s Lost Lake

At the annual medieval Yaxley fair it was customary for some householders to hang out a square of dried turf, and this sign was sufficient to constitute the house during the time of the fair a licensed house. No other license was required, and the exhibition of the turf prevented any legal consequences occurring to the householder for selling without the ordinary certificate. Turf Law returned at the Yaxley Festival in 2014.

Up until the middle of the 19th century, Yaxley was home to Southern England’s largest inland lake, the great Whittlesea Mere. It stretched about three miles east to west and two-and-a-half miles north to south in the summer, while winter flooding could make it even larger. Before drainage it was a paradise for boaters and fishermen, teeming with wildlife all year round and used by skaters in the winter when frozen.

The St. Peters Foal

Designing the Yaxley Festival

A local legend recounts the tale of Cromwell’s soldiers visiting St. Peters in 1632 and baptizing a foal in the church’s 12th century font. Also, there are musket shot marks along the base of the west side of the church’s outer wall which have been attributed to Cromwell’s men. However, this is probably the consequence of a prank by either the Tudor or Stuart militia who kept muskets and other arms at the base of the church tower.

In 2013, Stewart Howe of Fenland Web Design creates the Yaxley Festival and launches Yaxley’s first dedicated Yaxley village history website at www.yaxleyhistory.org. Please visit for more fascinating glimpses into Yaxley’s past.

The Yaxley Resurrection Men

Tel: 01733 244939 3a Windsor Road, Yaxley, Peterborough, PE7 3JA

In 1830, William Patrick and William Whayley, labourers of Farcet were charged with bodysnatching from Yaxley churchyard. Together they stole the recently interred body of Jane Mason. Abraham Rist, labourer of Yaxley told the court of Patrick’s attempts to get him to enter a body-snatching partnership. Patrick assured him that the watchmen turned a blind eye when he carried the sacks from the churchyard if he tipped with a few pieces of silver. Patrick also said that a certain ‘Grimmer’ repeatedly offered him money for the dead bodies.

Divorce or Separation - can it ever be amicable and less expensive? It is a sad fact of modern society that each year the national divorce rate in England and Wales goes up. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said there were 118,140 divorces in 2012, up 0.5% on 2011. The report says there were approximately 13 divorces an hour granted in England and Wales in 2012. Almost half occurred in the first 10 years of marriage. When a couple decide to separate or divorce it is not unusual for them to feel frightened, vulnerable and unsure where to turn. Clients need expert, friendly and proactive advice but don’t always know where to find it. I can help. I’ll provide a friendly ear to listen and the legal expertise to provide answers. When separating or divorcing, the most important issues to consider are the property and finances, together with matters relating to the children. These two issues cause the most upset and stress but obtaining expert legal advice can ease the pain. If handled well, divorce or separation does not have to be expensive or anger driven – many of my clients say that I provide a calm and collective approach, with quick results in a proactive, amicable and cost effective way. To find out how I can help you in relation to any Family Law queries call or email me now. I offer a FREE initial telephone consultation to all new clients. If you do require further help, meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient and local to you.

MONEY MATTERS

by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants

If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdnco.co.uk and if of general interest, it will be published here!

Taxation Question: I have my own small limited company - what is the level at which to pitch my monthly drawings to minimise my income tax and national insurance bills… whilst at the same time obtaining another qualifying tax year towards my State Pension contribution?

Answer: The simple answer for the year to 5 April 2015 is to pay yourself a monthly sum of £663 (that’s £7,956 in a full year) which potentially can be done tax and NIC free. Extra sums could then potentially be paid by the company as dividends to you which do not attract NIC, wouldn’t trigger a personal tax liability for you as a shareholder up to the higher rate tax threshold. In a straightforward case dividends up to a further £30,500 or so could be paid to you which would see a total of almost £38,500 drawn out of your company over the course of the current tax year.

Tax Tips There’s something quite appealing about the words TAX and FREE when they appear next to one another in the same sentence. But under certain circumstances they can be a reality when it comes to the salary packages your business makes available to both your employees and to yourself! For example did you know that: There is an increasing range of benefits to be enjoyed tax-free…including mobile phones, interest free loans, parking, company shares, life cover etc Certain benefits lend themselves nicely to salary sacrifice arrangements which can leave both the employer and the employee better off for every year the arrangements are in place. A common example is pension contributions but others, such as company car schemes, the provision of bikes and childcare vouchers could also be used. One simple example:

Chuch News St Peter’s Church I am writing this just a few days before the Yaxley Festival. The weather forecast is very positive so perhaps summer is finally going to arrive in time for the Festival. The improving weather is also good news for gardeners. Talking of which, our thanks to all those of you who attended our annual Green Day in St Peter’s on May 10th. We raised approximately £2,000 toward the cost of our rewiring and redecoration. I hope that your Green Day purchases will bring you pleasure. Whether we have gardens of our own or whether we visit public parks and gardens instead, there is something about a garden which is necessary for our wellbeing. Thomas More once said, “The soul cannot thrive in the absence of a garden. If you don’t want paradise, you are not human...” Even those of us who are not passionate gardeners, take delight in the great natural beauty we find in our gardens. Did you know that God was the first gardener? The Bible says that after he had created the heavens, the earth, animals and the first humans, God planted a garden in Eden. He planted a garden to be enjoyed, with beautiful trees and delicious fruit. The beauty of nature speaks to me of a designer God who has gone to great lengths to delight us. “The best place to find God is in a garden. You can dig for him there,” said the writer George Bernard Shaw. In a sense, our lives are like gardens. They need to be cared for. Sometimes pruning is needed to make us more fruitful – maybe we need to give some things up and give more attention to more important things. Sometimes there’s rubbish in our lives which we need to get rid of. The worst of this is too hard for us to deal with on our own. Jesus

Harry (who is on a salary of £30,000 p.a.) pays £3,000 into an approved pension scheme each year with his employer paying another £3,000. Both parties agree to salary sacrifice Harry’s contributions with the result that he will in future only pay tax and national insurance on £27,000 saving around £800 each year.

Dates to remember: 1 June 2014 - Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 August 2013. 19 June 2014 - PAYE and NIC deductions due for month ended 5 June 2014. (If you pay your tax electronically the due date is 22 June 2014.) 19 June 2014 - Filing deadline for the CIS300 monthly return for the month ended 5 June 2014. 19 June 2014 – Due date for CIS tax deducted for the month ended 5 June 2014.

In the vegetable patch this month, those of you lucky enough to have an asparagus bed shouldn’t forget to stop cutting them on 21st June (longest day), as this will allow the asparagus crowns to build up energy for next year’s harvest. Sow cabbages, cauliflowers, calabrese and kale for winter use, and keep the plants in your veg plot hand weeded or hoed, to cut out the competition from the weeds. If you have already planted runner beans, provide canes or other support to give them something to climb. It is also important to keep your courgettes, marrows and squashes well watered, which if allowed to dry, will increase the chance of powdery mildew. If growing tomatoes, wait until the first flowers have set fruit before starting to feed with a high potash feed. Plants growing in grow bags such as chillies, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers will also benefit from regular feeding. Continue to plant up hanging baskets, containers and garden boarders with bedding and basket plants. I would encourage you to try and grow sunpatiens in your garden, as these are wonderful floriferous plants. These vigorous and wide spreading plants will give a wonderful show all summer. Place many flower tubs and containers all around your garden and this will bring your garden alive. The effect is instant, always admired by friends and family and will look wonderful when having a BBQ. Oh...and being June, eat and enjoy those lovely strawberries with cream! Many people have told me how useful they have found the gardening tip that I gave last year on using your spare wasted cooking oil to keep your tools clean. I will repeat this for those who missed it. It is simply this... Get a large box or container, line it with polythene, fill it with sand and pour some waste oil onto the sand. When you have used your tools in the garden (eg. a spade or fork), clean off the soil and then plunge it into the sand box, which will not only clean the tool it will also oil it to stop rust.

Female football flying high at Hampton FC It was only 3 years ago that Hampton Football Club created one U10 Girls team to kick o their ambitious plans for female football in the city. In just three seasons they have become clearly the largest provider for female football in the Greater Peterborough area. They now cater for over 100 female players and are able to offer sessions for all girls from 7 years old and upwards, with 10 squads established for the 2014/15 season and are confident of reaching the combination league by 2020.

Yaxley FC “The first team have finished the season on a high beating Peterborough Northern Star to finish 6th in the UCL Premier Division. The second highest finish in 114 years which is some achievement.

As a club that concentrate on embedding a philosophy of playing flowing, passing football they have become renowned for producing elite level players and several have progresses on to Centre of Excellence football in the past two years. They are very proud of the fact that they have girls that have progressed to play at Lincoln, Cambridge and Arsenal.

Off the park the development of the club from the bottom up carries on apace with the creation of a Community Sports Academy.

But Hampton Football Club are not easing their progression and not now simply resting on their laurels, they are continuing to strive forwards. As a club they embrace young coaches and invest in them. This has resulted in the club having the most highly qualified coaching staff in the area to ensure that the level of coaching the players at the club receive is unrivalled by any other club in the region.

The schemes provide a learning environment that allows young people to develop their football

The club are currently running session to allow girls in school years 3 and 4 and opportunity to learn basic skills with a view to joining a team when the new football season starts in September. In addition Hampton Football Club have now formed a partnership with Peterborough United FC to offer opportunities for girls 13+ with the delivery of development session, these sessions will commence on Wednesday 4th Girls that would be interested in these sessions can contact Steve Purnell on 07964 496259 or steve@hamptonfc.co.uk The club also has opportunities for girls of all other age groups to get involved in football and you will find full details of all opportunities from girls on the clubs website at www.hamptonfc.co.uk

William De Yaxley “Has it really been a whole year since the children were dancing around the maypole and taking part in last year’s Yaxley Festival? At the time of writing, children from our year 5 classes are earnestly learning the steps for maypole dancing, and their left from their right, under the guidance of their teachers, for all Yaxley to enjoy over the festival weekend. Our chosen Lord and Lady, Cerys Laws and Sam Jarrett from Year 6, will be taking part in the procession and festivities too. Our Gardening Club has been benefiting hugely from the Morrison supermarket “Lets Grow” school voucher scheme. The children have been planting in earnest with their new tools to hand, and we are all looking forward to seeing the fruits of their labours quite soon.

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School Last month we had an OFSTED inspection and we are pleased to announce that we achieved outstanding. The following are a few extracts from the report. “The dynamic vision and passion of the owner to constantly strive for excellence is successfully disseminated to all staff, creating a team that will only accept the very best for all children” “Attachments are excellent with key persons knowing each child’s strengths and weaknesses. Consequently, each individual child’s needs are given the highest priority.”

As we enter the summer term we start the transition period for our older children who will be moving to Primary School in September. We make a conscious effort to support them through a wide range of activities including meeting the Reception Teacher from Holme Primary or whichever school they are attending, encouraging them to eat from their own lunch and taking part in mini P.E lessons, all elements which prepare them with the independent skills they need for School. We also start concentrating on letter sounds, using letters within mark making and developing some rhyming skills. Listening to the initial sounds in words and continuing to encourage the children to form letter shapes and develop their pencil control. In addition to helping our older children, we are having lots of fun in the build up to the World Cup this summer by focussing on different countries each week and so far they have enjoyed learning and experiencing elements from Spain and Switzerland through foods, crafts, play and much more.

“This vibrant homely nursery offers children a truly memorable early years experience within an environment which is a home-from-home” “This nursery belongs to the children” We would like to express our thanks to our dedicated hard working staff, and of course the ongoing support from our parents . Bags of Cash for Stilton Playgroup! We are back again, into our last term of the year. The pre-schoolers are enjoying their visits to ‘big’ school. It’s a chance to take part in PE in the hall, play in the playground and to get to know Miss Day. Following all the rules is a challenge but they are getting better each week! Bank Holiday Monday brought us lovely spring weather, fun at CheeseRolling and bags of cash, literally! We are so lucky that Nisa chose us as the beneficiary of their fundraising. Nisa have been charging their customers 5 pence per carrier bag, with proceeds to Stilton Playgroup. On May Day, we were presented with a cheque for £1203 – absolutely fantastic! We are very grateful to Nisa and to the customers who have supported this scheme. Our staff and children have put together a wish-list of things to spend the money on. Decisions, decisions!

Holme C of E School Wow! What a great start to the term we have had here at Holme Church of England School. To kick-start our whole school topic of Inspire, we have had an Arctic Explorer come to get our children excited about the world around them; a Christian charity from Columbia visit to explain their work and how children in our school could help with that and Histon produce visit with a wonderful array of exotic fruits from far flung locations to get our taste buds tingling! These real experiences benefit our children enormously and are one way in which we aim to make our curriculum real and exciting for children. We still have a few places available for Reception starters this September and one or two spaces left across the school; if you would like to book a tour to visit the school or find out more about us, please call the school office for more details.

‘Captain Carrot’ our healthy eating super hero has certainly made a big impact on the children. Since his visit we have been out shopping in the village, tasting our purchases and creating delicious healthy recipes. ‘Captain Carrot’ has tasked us all to tackle the evil ‘Baron Von Burger’ and encourage him to live a healthier lifestyle. This is no mean feat and we have to do lots of research to convince him to change his habits. We have also been doing lots of exercise and can’t wait to involve our parents/ carers in our new ‘Alert 2 Learn’ programme. You might have seen us practising in the playground. The programme is designed to increase the flow of oxygen to the brain, to get us ready for learning and it is fun too!! Let’s hope ‘Baron Von Burger’ joins in and makes a change to a healthier lifestyle. I am sure when he sees the children making healthy choices he will. In Year One and Foundation are all looking forward to an afternoon out to take part in the East of England Agricultural Society’s Kids Country programme let’s hope it is an Eggcellent day eggsploring the world of chickens and eggs.

Yet again another busy month at Stretton PreSchool. Yaxley festival was enjoyed by both sites by dressing up and parading as ‘Boggarts’ the folklore creatures. Thank you to all who paraded with their children or who helped man our fundraising stall over the weekend, we couldn’t run the pre-school without your continued support. Both sites have also embraced creepy crawlies with Fourfields avidly watching their frog spawn develop into tadpoles and also creating minibeasts from clay. Main Street went outside on a bug hunt and returned with an array of bugs, they are currently looking after caterpillars waiting patiently for their changes just like ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’. Headstart children will now start visiting their primary schools in preparation for September, a very exciting and nervous time for children and parents alike. Graduation date is Saturday 19th July more details in next month’s column. As some of you will remember we held a very successful Summer Fayre at the Austin Hall last year which we are hoping to emulate this year. The date for your diary is Sunday 8th June. There will be stalls, craft stands and activities for all the family. So please pray for fantastic weather and support the village’s much loved pre-school. We have spaces at both sites for September if you would like more information please visit our website www.stretton-pre-school.co.uk or visit either site.

This term we are all becoming ‘Foodies’ with our focus on all things food. This has included reviewing our school meals and we are proud to say our catering team now make over 75% of our meals in our own school kitchen and are working to reduce our food supply chains with daily deliveries from a ‘Farm Assured’ butcher. We have also introduced plates for all children and no longer present our meals on ‘flight’ trays and have split our lunch times to make the lunchtime experience more enjoyable for the children. Our focus is now turning to how we can encourage our children to try new menu choices with new healthy options on our menus such as stuffed peppers and baked bean and vegetable lasagne. We are also having a half termly focus on a seasonal vegetable or fruit which features in our menus and in our assemblies. We continue to learn about how food is grown and have been using school grown vegetables in our school menus. In addition, we are very fortunate to be supported by John Lewis who has agreed to provide some cooking demonstrations to children later this term. Finally, we are very excited to be hosting our first ‘Farmers Market’ from 3pm on Thursday 27th June. Why not pop along and join in with our celebration of local food. We will have stalls and refreshments and our cook will be selling her famous Fourfields Fudge Tart to take home! If you would like a stall at our Farmers Market please contact the school. For more information please access the school website www.fourfields.cambs.sch.uk.

Little Cuckoo’s Pre-school Everyone from Little Cuckoo’s pre-school would like to thank everyone who came and supported the Yaxley festival. The children enjoyed watching the fair arrive and painted pictures of the rides. The children enjoyed playing outdoors in the rain. They used different containers to try and collect the rain. We have been busy looking at different patterns and creatures in the environment. The children have enjoyed having the teachers visit the setting in preparation for their move to big school in September. If you are interested in sending your child to Little Cuckoo’s pre-school then please contact Jayne 07840324283 or Michelle 07824706281 for more details as we are now taking places for September.

Crystals have been used for healing since ancient times by many different cultures. They work through resonance and vibration to restore a sense of wholeness and balance on an emotional, spiritual, and psychological level, as well as helping the physical body. Crystal therapy / healing can help relieve stress and tensions, through revitalisation and relaxation, creating a greater amount of peace and harmony to promote ‘wellness’. All crystals have particular healing properties that relate to our emotional and physical being. Quite often we are ‘drawn’ to a particular crystal or gemstone; this is usually because we need the healing properties of that crystal at that time. Amethyst is an extremely powerful and protective stone with a high vibration. It is known as ‘the elevator’. It strengthens the endocrinal

Reducing

the fear of crime As the owner of www.safelocaltrades.com, an online local register of vetted, recommended tradespeople, I work with a number of different partners across the county, one of which is The Bobby Scheme, based in Sawtry. The Bobby Scheme is a charity dedicated to securing the homes of victims of crime aged 60 and over. They also help to reduce the fear of crime to non victims, disabled residents and victims of domestic abuse. The charity aims to:

• • • •

Reduce burglary Reduce repeat victimisation Reduce the fear of crime Increase feelings of safety and provide peace of mind

Why the community needs this charity Because they work closely with Cambridgeshire Police, they are able to identify victims of burglary aged 60+ within 24 hours and can offer their security service immediately. They can then target crime hot spots in the county and secure the homes of non-victims aged 65+ in the area, thus reducing the likelihood of thieves returning to the vicinity. The Bobbies not only fit security equipment to the homes of the elderly but also give safety advice which helps victims feel safe in their own homes again. They offer the same service to non-victims for a small donation.

Work to date Since the scheme started, they have visited over 21,800 homes. Last year the Scheme helped 228 victims aged 60+, 827 potential victims and fitted 114 key safes. Their figures show the repeat burglary rate in the county is 12% and, where The Bobby Scheme has secured homes, the repeat burglary rate is less than 1%.

Thinking of going away this summer? Have you thought about what you might do with your furry or feathered member of the family? You will probably recognise Amy Ramsey, Peterborough’s original professional dog walker, but what you might not know is that Amy also offers home visits for cats, rabbits, chickens etc. With fourteen years of caring for Peterborough’s home alone pets, Amy’s experience is second to none, thanks to her lifelong, genuine devotion to animals. Amy likes to meet you and your furry friend(s) in their home environment first, to discuss their individual needs, quirks and requirements. She explains, “It’s vital that pet and owners alike feel comfortable and at ease with me. Getting to know each individual pet is like making a new friend!” Fully insured and police checked, Amy is more than happy to open and close curtains, put out dustbins, water plants etc. Also from a security point of view Amy drives a regular car so no signed van/car will be parked outside your home advertising the fact you are away. So, if you’re planning to go away this summer, now is the time to make sure your pet(s) are having a relaxing, stress free time as well. Cut out and keep

Pets

To chip or not to chip?! A microchip is a harmless radio chip about the size of a grain of rice. It is injected under the skin of your pet in the same way as a routine vaccination. Each one is coded with a unique number which that can be read by a harmless scanner. The number is linked on a national database with the owners contact details. There are many reasons why microchipping your pet is a good idea, the more accurate question is why not? dogstrust.org.uk. Going astray Hundreds of thousands of stray pets are taken in by rescue centres throughout the country each year. Sadly over half of these aren’t returned their owners as they have no identification and after only seven days, these strays can be offered to new homes.

Emergency care At Cromwell Vets we have found that microchips have been invaluable in reuniting pets with their owners. Most commonly we have cats brought to in an emergency and they aren’t wearing a collar. In these circumstances it is important to find their owner as fast as possible, and this reunion has been made possible with a quick scan to obtain the pet’s unique number allowing us to contact their owners.

number is growing each year; to date 40,000 dog owners have had their dog stolen (since records began). A microchip can prove you are the dogs rightful owner and help them be returned to you.

Compulsory microchips for dogs The government has passed the law that as from 6th April 2016 (1st March 2015 in Wales) it will be compulsory for all dogs to be microchipped. Many of the animal services are actively supporting this legislation and thanks to the Dogs Trust, we can offer all dogs a FREE microchip at all of our Cromwell Vets surgeries. We are also offering the service at events our team are attending; the Sawtry Carnival on 7th June and the Animal Fun Day at Ramsey Rural Museum on 15th June.

Dog theft Another worrying concern is the growing crime of dog theft. Dogs are taken at any opportunity, including from gardens and cars, and then either sold on or held to ransom for thousands of pounds. In 2012 over 3,500 dogs were reported and the

Dogs aren’t the only pets who would be benefit from a microchip – cats, birds, rabbits, even tortoises and snakes – any animal can be microchipped to protect against loss or theft for only £9.99 at Cromwell Vets.

Last year I missed the Saturday due to work commitments, so this year I was determined to make up for it. I walked in the parade with my two sons, I watched Warwick Davis get set upon by a group of witch hunting soldiers and I laughed as about two hundred quid’s worth of balloons blew away before the show had even started. Then, whilst my wife went and did her shift on the Stretton tombola, I spent a few hours getting stressed chasing round after two thrilled children and one over excited mother in law. We hit the fair where my eldest had the time of his life on the rides, we rode on Autumn the horse which my youngest thought was the most amazing thing to ever happen ever, and we looked at the old photo collection whilst they both slept off the excitement. We enjoyed our sausages and burgers, laughed at how everywhere had a queue except the vegan food stand and having found a nice shady place to sit, were put off by my son’s over excitement as the horse and cart went by and the horse did a poo. I admired all the classic cars, and laughed at the Ford Grenada Mk I and Mk II owners guild, imagining some West Life Story-esque scenes should the Mk III owners guild show up on their turf. And then, after a long walk home, I sat in my garden listening to the Jimi Hendrix tribute band whilst peeling chunks of sunburnt skin off my arms and crying into my cider. How nice it has been to see the village full of people, celebrating everything that is good about Yaxley. Had last year’s festival been a one off, then no one would have complained. The fact that it has come back this year bigger and better is a testament to all those involved. The enthusiasm of those involved was matched only by those who visited. Well done to everyone, and I can’t wait for the next one.

Don’t overload yourself on the work front otherwise you will find yourself exhausted. A loved one needs your time and appreciation now too, don’t overlook their needs. Capricorn December 22-January 20 You are finally starting to see your potential and have a grasp of what you can actually achieve, be careful not to alienate others on your way, as you could get caught up in your own ‘little bubble.’ Keep a close check on finances as an unexpected bill needs dealing with. Aquarius January 21-February 19 A new chapter is now upon you and you must make the most of this fabulous opportunity, be it a new relationship, or even a move. Seize every chance that comes your way. A discussion with someone key will help you launch into a new direction - go for it! Pisces February 20-March 20 Why do you always run with the crowd and are overly eager to impress others? what are you trying to prove and to whom? Be yourself and let your star quality shine through. A work opportunity needs serious consideration, this could lead to something big!
