Welcome to the July issue. I am hoping for some glorious sunshine in July, lots of BBQs and picnics are on my agenda, plus the odd bottle of a good wine! This month we have the Parish Council Annual report on pages 20-21, so please take some time to read it. Great Fen Information Point
Last time I wrote, I introduced myself and told you a little bit about the Great Fen. Now let me tell you about one of the areas that you can visit within the project area called Great Fen Information Point (New Decoy). Located on the B660 between Ramsey St Mary’s and Holme village, you will find a car park which has the most fascinating black tree trunks that are known as bog oaks surrounding the parking area. Bog oaks have emerged out of the ground when farmers have been ploughing their fields and most probably date back to over 6,000 years ago when the country would have been covered in trees.
New Decoy is a fantastic place to start discovering the Great Fen!
When you arrive, you will be immediately enveloped by the huge skyscape that is so special to the Fens. To the northwest, you will see the silver birch wood which is Holme Fen and away to the south is Woodwalton Fen, both National Nature Reserves and key pieces in the Great Fen jigsaw. New Decoy will give you a snapshot of what the Great Fen will look like with seasonally wet meadows and cattle such as Highlands grazing peacefully. You can read how the land is restored on the information panels near the parking area. In 2010, restoration began on the fields and there is a fantastic amount of wildlife that can already be seen here. In particular dazzling dragonflies and beautiful butterflies in the summer and flashes of colour with flocks of Siskin, Redpoll, and Goldfinch in the winter, but to name a few! As the wet meadows develop breeding waders and flocks of wintering wildfowl will frequent the site. Whilst you are there, why not have a picnic, in the picnic area where you can discover information about dragonflies and ponds and then take a stroll around the circular dragonfly walk and enjoy the points of interest along the way. Jon’s Hide can be found at the halfway point. This fantastic hide is made of straw bales and was a tremendous volunteer project. A variety of birds can be seen on the feeders there and the windows provide snapshots of the landscape. The hide really is a portal in to the Great Fen! Remember we are running ‘Wildlife Wednesdays’ family drop-in days in August at the Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre, Ramsey Heights with lots of activities to get stuck in to! We meet every Wednesday 1.15- 3.15 pm at the Community Centre on Hampton Vale. The afternoon starts off with tea coffee biscuits, we then have a quiz, domino bingo and a raffle. We then choose which activity you want to play, we have two full size table tennis tables, scrabble ,cribbage, skittles, boules, cards and many other games or sit and chat make new friends all for £ 2.00 per session. We are hoping to organise some days out and invite guest speakers to the club, we have received some funding and we are hoping to provide transport for people who cannot reach the club independently. The club was started nearly two years ago, there was a real need to have a meeting place for the over 50s. Our main aim is to reach lonely vulnerable people and bring them back into the community.

What species of clematis is this and why does some have double heads? Clematis ‘Piilu’ pronounced pie-loo is also known as ‘Little Duckling’ and is a delicious climber. A cross between Clematis Hagley Hybrid and Clematis Mahrouyi. The foliage of Clematis ‘Piilu’ is also outstandingly as the leaves are ovate tapered and dark green. Flowers first appear in May which are double and up to 7cm across, while the later blooms are single. The flowers are light purplish pink with an eye catching wide dark purplish-red bar. ‘Piilu’ is considered a large flowering clematis with numerous flowers from first year planting. I believe Clematis ‘Piilu’ is the very heaviest bloomer known at this time. Many Clematis bloom only near the top of the plant, leaving the bottom bare, but Clematis ‘Piilu’ blooms top to bottom. The flowering period, of this particular variety of Clematis, is also outstanding as it starts in May and keeps blooming until late October and if the autumn is mild extends into November. Many Clematis varieties have blooms that fade or shrink over time - with Clematis ‘Piilu’ her blooms do neither! There are always blooms present, and unlike most Clematis cultivars ‘Piilu’ does not take a midsummer break. Email farcetgardeningcommunity@hotmail.co.uk

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue As the summer months are upon us and many people enjoy the great outdoors, we’re asking parents, carers and community leaders to remind youngsters about the dangers of playing with fire and the risks of making hoax calls to 999. If your child rings 999 when there isn’t an emergency, this can waste fire service resource and delay fire engines from attending real incidents, putting people’s lives in danger. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is also honing in on hoarding and encouraging friends and family of hoarders to take steps to protect their loved ones from fire. These include keeping exit routes clear, ensuring there is a working smoke alarm on each floor of the property and regularly clearing combustible materials – like newspapers – to help prevent fire spreading.

Stilton Twinning exchange visit to St Christol From our arrival at Nimes airport (where they were waiting outside the terminal with coffee and croissants) to the moment they said goodbye to us four days later, the hospitality of our hosts and their enthusiasm for our visit, was superb.

As well as spending time with the families we were staying with, our programme included a beach picnic, a reception at the Mairie (Town Hall), an open air lunch in an historic market square and visits to the Roman Archeological Museum in Arles, the Bambouseraie Bamboo Gardens at Anduze, the Feria (Festival) in Alès and the stunning village of Les Baux de Provence - including the impressive Carrières de Lumières multimedia display in the stone quarry. On the final night, at the farewell dinner in a local restaurant, gifts were exchanged between St Christol and Stilton. Three new Santon Nativity Figures were presented by St Christol and these will join the display in Stilton Church next Christmas. Along with a whole Stilton Cheese, a pen set in a presentation box hand-crafted by Andy Dann was presented to St Christol, which will be used in their Mairie Marriage Ceremony Room. Here’s looking forward to next year when the French visit us.

Happy100th Birthday! A card from the queen and a party with her 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and other family members, is how Margaret Baker celebrated her 100th birthday early in June.

Born and raised in Derby, Margaret spent her married life in Leicester and Market Harborough, before moving to Yaxley in 2000 to be near her eldest daughter. Margaret still enjoys a gentle stroll near her home, being taken out a ride in the car in the local countryside’s and attending family events. She would like to thank everyone for her cards, flowers, and good wishes she has received on this special occasion.

This was played in glorious sunshine and ended with a win for Yaxley after being beaten as usual in the indoor leg.
Playing in the Donald Stewart Trophy Joan Robinson, Hazel Bass, Kathy Browning, Doris Flowers and Joan Padley won on five rinks out of six, difficult to believe but they still lost by a margin of two points!
County Competitions. Unusually, this year it is the men setting the pace! Graham our Chairman with John Hadley and Robert Heath playing with his “Jaffa Oranges “ all played with extreme accuracy to beat Parkway, who were one of the strongest teams on the county scene by a substantial margin in the Federation two wood triples. They followed this up with a cliffhanger of a battle against another, much fancied team, from West Ward. Keep it up gents!

Holme WI This month our guest speaker was Katy-Ann Mason and her puppy Ria, Katy-Ann is a volunteer puppy walker for Guide Dogs and she gives a home and training to a Guide dog puppy for the first year of their life, Ria is the 4th puppy that Katy-Ann has trained and this takes up a lot of her time. After the first year the puppy moves onto Guide dog training school (a very sad time in having to say goodbye) for about another year before becoming a full Guide dog (if they pass all the training) Throughout the talk Ria was very well behaved, as was Katy-Ann. a very good evening. Our next meeting will be at Holme village hall on Thursday 3rd of July at 7.30pm, this will be our annual produce show, and visitors will be very welcome.
New players Our new players were very much in evidence, with at least one already playing in league matches! We hosted the game between North Essex and Northampton see Picture. Our Club was well represented by John Hadley and Les Sharp. Cheese and Pate evening scheduled for Saturday 12 July an unfortunate clash of fixtures means it will be advisable to check nearer the date.

Chuch News Saint Peter’s Church I wonder if you have found any coins or half eaten food down the back of your sofa recently. Well, a month or so ago three American students bought a sofa for $20 from a charity store. When they got home and put their hands down the back of the sofa they found $40,000 in cash stuffed in various envelopes. What would you or I do in that situation? Apparently, the students were initially delighted with their windfall. However, they then realised that one of the envelopes containing the money had an address on it. They traced the money’s owner and discovered that she was a 91 year old widow. They gave her the money back. The students then found out that the widow’s family had given the sofa to the Salvation Army (along with her life savings of course) without telling her! I’d like to think that we would all have done the same thing with the money if we had found it. I don’t know if the three students had any religious convictions and I am NOT saying that these are essential for any of us to do the right thing with the money in that situation. However, the Church has just celebrated the time of year when Jesus ascended back to Heaven. Just before his Ascension he told his followers to go and do similar things to those he had been doing. Looking after the widows and others in need were surely some of the things Jesus had in mind.
Yaxley Methodist Chapel Our friend and Minister Trevor Sands leaves us in July. A sad time for us as we say ‘farewell’ to him and to Judith.
Jesus’ last words on earth are part of the motivation for our “Community Sunday” which we are holding on Sunday July 13th this year. If you know anyone who needs help whether that’s with a car wash, a hedge trim for example then please contact us. We can be contacted at community@ saintpeters.co.uk or in the evening and at weekends on 07776 226790.
We wish them a wonderful retirement. If Trevor has touched your lives please come to his last service with us on 13th July at 10:30. Our new Minister will be joining us in September. During August if you want to contact us about Christenings, Weddings, Funerals or you need help please email and one of our Stewards will reply.
Lastly, I know some of you will be leaving your schools and moving on to other schools, colleges or perhaps starting work later this month. I hope that these moves all go well and that you will have good memories to take with you. As always, you are all welcome to join us at any of our services at St Peter’s.

Storytime, aimed at children from 18 months to 5 years continues on alternate Tuesdays from 10.30am-11am, dates in July are 1st and 15th. EngAge The next EngAge event is on Wednesday 16th July at 2pm and will be a talk on the Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon by curator John Goldsmith. Summer Reading Challenge Calling all children! Come along and register for the summer reading challenge from Monday 14th July. This year the theme of the challenge is “The Mythical Maze”. The idea is to read six books over the course of the summer holidays collecting stickers and activities as you progress. Keep on crafting against cancer There will be a charity fundraiser day called ‘Keep on Crafting against Cancer’ on Saturday 26th July at Orton Wistow Community Centre between 12.30-16.30. Can money or assets be protected in a new relationship? Many couples bring assets or money into their marriage that they wish to protect in the event of a relationship breakdown. Nobody wants to think about what happens if a relationship ends unhappily, but preparation can prevent financial loss and arguments at what will be a very stressful time – a bit like an insurance policy. Question: I’ve heard that I won’t be able to reclaim the sick pay I paid to my employees from April 2014. Is this true?
Fund Raising Drive for 2 New ECG Machines
Answer: Unfortunately yes. For SSP paid after 6 April 2014 no off-sets will be given. The SSP will be a total cost to the employer, although it is a legal requirement to pay SSP to eligible employees. In return the Government is going to provide more help to employees who have been off sick for 4 weeks or more, in the form of a “back to work plan”.
Yaxley Group Practice currently has 3 ECG machines which are used regularly by the Practice Nurses and the District Nurses every week. We have been notified by the company that these machines are coming towards the end of their life and as a result Numed Healthcare will be unable to support service and repair them. The Patients Association are keen to support and fundraise in an attempt to raise funds to purchase 2 new models which can be used by both the Practice and District Nurses. The Model that would be most suitable for us would be the Mac600 which would cost £3,100.00 for two. Dr Nanda Bhat has outlined below what an ECG is, why it is useful and when do we use ECG’s in primary care.
Tax Tips
Are your children making the most of their personal allowances? If they have income from a bank or building society account and the total income for the year is less than their personal allowance, then the child (or the parent on their behalf ) can register to receive the income gross without deduction of tax. However, if the income is derived from money that the parent has put aside on the child’s behalf then the income will be taxed as the parent’s income (at the parent’s marginal tax rate) while the child is unmarried and under 18 years of age. In his latest Budget George Osborne announced that he is introducing a New ISA (or NISA for short) from July 2014. These new rules are the most radical overhaul to ISA rules since they were introduced in 1999, and signify the Chancellor’s intention to encourage individuals to save and invest for their future. New ISA limit - the ISA allowance (the amount you can invest each tax year) will rise to £15,000 on 1 July 2014.
What is an ECG? An ECG (electrocardiogram) is an electrical tracing of the heart. An ECG machine has 10 electrodes
which are applied to the chest and limbs. When activated this captures a snapshot of the electrical activity of the heart at that point in time. ECG machines can be freestanding or connected to a computer, manual providing only a paper printout or integrated to software systems which allow a tracing to be downloaded directly into a patients notes as well as providing a paper printout if necessary. Why is it useful? An ECG allows a doctor or specially trained nurse to be able to interpret certain things about the heart’s functioning.

The heart rate, the heart rhythm, any disturbances to the hearts electrical conducting system, any abnormal thickening of the heart muscle (often a result of long standing high blood pressure) and the presence of ischaemic heart disease (angina and heart attacks). When do we use ECGs in primary care? We sometimes use them routinely - to aid a review of patients with known cardiac disease. We also use them in a more acute scenario - to investigate individuals with possible cardiac symptoms. e.g. chest pain. It greatly helps us to exclude heart disease as a possible cause or confirm it and guide further tests, treatment or referral. Last year we did 740 ECG recordings at YGP. How many ECG machines do we need at YGP and what type? We currently have 3 machines, 2 that are semi integrated with Vision (the clinical software system that we use) that are used by the practice nurses and one that is used by the district nursing team. These will no longer be able to be serviced and therefore not be suitable for use in 12-18months time. We propose that we acquire 2 new ECG machines. The Mac 600 is an ECG machine that can be fully integrated with Vision but is still mobile and portable. Integration with clinical software allows the nurses to perform the ECGs in a very timely manner, the IT department to load them onto the computer

in a far easier and quicker way and the doctors to review present and past ECG easily. The quality of ECG recordings downloaded directly to the patient notes in this manner is far better than photocopied and scanned recordings. The overall process is much more efficient that a manual machine which provides a paper printout only. The practice ideally needs 2 machines to cater for the volume of ECGs we do at YGP. Having 2 machines allows both routine ECGs and urgent ECGs to be performed easily without patients being made to wait for significant periods of time. It also allows patients who are housebound to have ECGs done at home in a timely manner as these machines can be used in the community.These particular machines have a 5 year manufacturer’s warranty.

July can be a hot month in the garden and water becomes very important in order to keep plants growing well particularly those in containers. If plants do not get a sufficient water supply they will wilt and possibly die. Water needs to be used wisely in order to suit the plant and the environment. The aim should be to give plants sufficient water without waste and one way to do this is to water directly around the plant waste and not all over the leaves. It is a good idea to water in the evening in order to reduce evaporation and allow the water to reach the roots. It is always a good idea to water thoroughly less often than little and often as to do the latter only encourages the plants roots to the surface of the soil rather than searching

In the vegetable garden although the season is coming to an end, there is still time to sew spring cabbage, Chinese cabbage and lettuces, peas, French beans, carrots and radish. There is still time to plant your leek plants if you have not already done so. It is recommended by many to trim the roots and the top leaves of the leek plant before planting. In my opinion this is not necessary as it serves no practical benefit. If growing broad beans, when they reach a good height with a lot of flower it is a good idea to pinch the tops out to discourage black fly. Black fly and green fly (Aphids) like to feed on the soft young growth of plants and they feed on the sap at the same time and can transmit a virus from the leaves to the plant. It is now proven that growing organically using organic fertiliser rather than inorganic fertiliser tends to give the plant a thicker leaf tissue system making it more difficult for aphids to penetrate foliage which means that they look for the softer grown plants. In the flower garden, continue to dead head your annual and perennial plants and ensure your plants in containers are well watered and fed if you have not used controlled release fertiliser then sit back and enjoy your fruits of your hard work.

Yaxley Football Club team up with Yaxley Riders
Yaxley Football Club have teamed up with Yaxley Riders to set up a Tour de France treat when the race visits the region in early July. YFC President Jeff Lenton told us that “...the Riders needed a start and finish point for their ride to Cambridge to wave off the Tour on its way to London. We are more than happy to host them using In2iitve Park as a base for the day.” He adds “when they have 75 miles in their legs on the way back we will be supplying coffee and cake to get the energy levels up.” James Warrener of Yaxley Riders told us “Jeff and I talked over this idea as it’s a massive day in the sporting calendar for the region. We both agreed that we want YR to be a part of it. The facilities at Yaxley FC are second to none and we have everything we need to prepare for the ride out. No excuses! Whilst cycling and football don’t really have a lot in common, both organisations are fully committed to the community of Yaxley and of promoting sport as a healthy choice in the village. It was a no-brainer to work together. We hope it’s the first of many mutual projects together.”

With local lad Lewis Stone signing, Manager Brett Whaley has commented that his transfer business for the summer is complete. The Academy is starting to take shape and the Junior sides are starting to prepare for more trophies. Next month we will have the results from the Juniors presentation evening being held in mid June. In the meantime enjoy the World Cup and the Tour de France ! STOP PRESS – The Cuckoos start their season at home to Wisbech Town on 2nd August with a 10:45 am kick off. This is part of national groundhopper day where fans of non league football from across the country try and get to many games. We are proud to be kicking that off locally and hope for a massive crowd for this big derby game.

Yaxley Parish Council I am Kevin Gulson and have the honour of being the chairman for Yaxley Parish Council following David Youles resignation as Chairman and councillor in June 2013. He had been Chairman from 2006 - 2013 and worked on the council giving many years of service to the parish and community. This left a vacancy on the Council. I was truly pleased to see the interest from a number of candidates for co-option to the council and would like to welcome Sally Howell as the successful candidate co-opted to this vacancy.

Review of the year

My first task is to thank all our parish councillors for their time and effort which I will remind people is a completely voluntary position. Currently we have meetings every week with the various committees therefore you can appreciate the time and effort that these officers give. Further bouquets must go out to all the Parish workforce, they have recently taken more on ownership of their work through the year bringing in suggestions and ideas that go to help make required improvements to our facilities thank you. They have managed to achieve 5 star hygiene reports for both Owen and Pooley Hall kitchens, a fantastic achievement this year well done. Finally to our ground staff who maintain the village. Not only do they have the role of maintaining the village but the added task to try to keep the football pitches going through the extreme wet conditions at the start of the year. I’m sure football teams and managers will appreciate that that although we had nearly 2 months of cancellations they have worked hard to ensure our pitches would not be damaged in the long term and we could finish the season albeit with the rescheduling of a number of matches.
What a start to the year it was, Yaxley Parish Council supported ‘The 2013 Yaxley Festival’ with facilities and manpower for an unknown event, as it was thousands turned out to demonstrate their talents and have a great time. The year has culminated with ‘The 2014 Yaxley Festival’ where the Parish Council had unanimously agreed further support, not only with manpower and facilities but providing the sponsorship for the main stage at the festival a truly fantastic setting for any new bands. The Festival is looking to be an annual village event headlining our local talent, from our schools, local groups and local business. This is a clear indication of what can be achieved where there is a will to succeed and that Yaxley has an abundance of community spirit that brought it all together to make this happen. A great event for our village, thank you to all the organisers and volunteers for making it the success it is. We are pleased to be able to say we were a small part of this success story. Following on from last year’s Festival, interest has been shown in moving towards a new community building in the recreation ground. This was presented to the parish council and a working party of councillors and interested parties was formed to work through with this scheme, as yet this is very early days but I do feel this can help place Yaxley as a centre of sporting excellence, not only football and cricket, both of which are well supported within the village but a wide range of sports covering all age groups within the community. Through the village you will see the new notice boards have been improving the street scene, increasing people’s awareness of activities in the area. Local groups keen to advertise their meetings and events have been quick to praise the look of these notice boards. We will look to roll out further replacements through the coming years. A program of renovating and or replacing benches around the village continues, we have received a number compliments regarding these improvements. However we also noted a learning curve, this being the need to keep the community informed as to what is happening. The bench improvements will be ongoing into the coming years as required. Again this year we have provided a new bus shelter in Windsor Road and we plan to continue with this annual replacement programme to improve the village. Allotments continue to be in high demand in our 3 sites, currently all are full and we have a waiting list of applicants. Additional parking at Dovecote Lane for the cemetery has been completed with majority of funding via Cambridgeshire County Council Highways. The possible location of a new cemetery has been found and is getting support from Huntingdonshire District Council. This will be a long term project with the first stage to obtain planning permission then plan and agree the layout.

Dog fouling continues to be a constant thorn within the village. We have implemented a number of measures to bring this problem to the attention of our dog owning community and recently this has shown some improvement. However we will continue in our efforts to get the message out to all to make the desired improvement last.

I hope that the council can get some movement with the Festival Park Project in this coming year in making Yaxley a centre of sporting excellence for the future, again an exciting opportunity for our village and community. The footpath surrounding the church has been in need of improvement for some time now. I am pleased to say that the council received and accepted an extremely generous offer from a parishioner in making the required improvements in a number of sections over the coming year. Changes in the village highlighted that we need to keep all informed, as fully as possible to what, when and why we are making various changes within our village. To this end we are improving the information going onto our website however we recognise not everyone has internet access therefore will continue to post details in the Yaxley Gazette.

Hoorah! Summer is finally upon us! And what better way to welcome summer, than to introduce the summer eating and those long summer BBQ days! With the sun highly likely to make a strong appearance this summer, it’s time to ditch those cold weather dishes, and trade them in for the light dishes... For those of you whose summer means an abundance of BBQs, we’ve included our favourite BBQ dish that we found too good to not include, after making it for the past 2 years, it’s our BBQ Chicken Burgers.
BBQ Chicken Burgers Ingredients: 4 skinless boneless chicken breasts, 4 rashers bacon, 4 burger buns, lettuce, tomato, red onion. For the sauce: 4 tbsp tomato ketchup, 4 tbsp brown sauce, 2 tsp clear honey. Recipe: 1. Make the marinade for the chicken by adding the sauces together in a large bowl. Leave some spare and to the side.
Next up, it’s one for those of you whose summer is all about the cold food, tomatoes, salads, the light options and the quick on-the-go. While the tomatoes are ripe, and the peppers are crisp and juicy, allow yourself to indulge slightly with the addition of diced succulent chicken breast, grilled for 20 minutes, tossed into the salad and topped with a flavour of your favourite dressing!
Grilled Chicken Salad Ingredients: 2 boneless chicken breast halves, 1 large red pepper, ½ red onion, whole lettuce, cherry tomatoes, salad dressing, grated cheese. Recipe: 1. Preheat grill or BBQ 2. Lightly oil the grill pan or BBQ plate. 3. Grill the chicken for approximately 10 minutes on each side, or until completely cooked. 4. Remove from heat, leave to cool and then dice. 5. In a large bowl toss together the chicken, lettuce, peppers, onion, tomatoes and any other optional ingredients. Add grated cheese to top. 6. Pour on the salad dressing of your choice (Cedar dressing is a great choice) and serve!
2. Slice halfway into the chicken and open it up, flatten it down slightly with your hand.
And finally, it’s time to treat yourself! Is the BBQ still hot? We’ve the perfect desert option! Take a juicy ripe banana and fill it with sweet treats, including chocolate spread and peanut butter, chuck it back on the BBQ and wait for the delicious smell of banana and chocolate. Open it up, grab a spoon and you’re good to enjoy!
BBQ Banana Boat Ingredients: 1 banana, chocolate spread, peanut butter, marshmallows, chocolate chips (or chunks), aluminium foil. Recipe: 1. Peel a section off of a banana, but do not fully remove it as you will need the peel later. 2. Cut the peeled section out of the banana, but don’t cut all the way through.
4. Put the peel back into place and wrap the banana in aluminium foil.
4. Barbeque the chicken for about 10 minutes, or until completely cooked.
5. Let the bananas sit on the BBQ for 3-5 minutes.

Holme Church of England School We are particularly delighted to be able to have the two 2012 Olympic Gold medallists for slalom canoeing coming to talk to the children about their journey to gold – we may even persuade them to use the school pool for the canoe!
This term continues to be packed full of educational visits and visitors to inspire our children about the world around them; careers, amazing people and creativity. We are busy preparing for our new Reception children in September and have a number of transition events planned over the next few weeks so that children, mums and dads are fully prepared for this big step.

Folksworth Pre School The children enjoyed the Hungry Caterpillar story so much that they wanted to make their own. Every child made and took home their very own grass caterpillar and some have brought in photos of how they look now. As the owner of Stilton Garden Centre donated so many grass seeds to us, we were able to make some hedgehogs for our very own garden patch too. All of the children would like to say a massive thank you to him.
Little Cuckoos preschool The children were busy making father’s day items in June, so hope all the fathers out there had a wonderful day.

to everyone who helped to make the ‘Summer Fayre’ a huge success! The weather was certainly in our favour allowing our outdoor activities to be enjoyed. We raised a huge sum of money to be put towards new equipment in both sites, so if you donated a raffle prize, enjoyed the refreshments, enjoyed the pony rides etc then we cannot thank you enough. World Cup fever came to Stretton! Fourfields site are raising money towards their mini beast/mud kitchen area, the children enjoyed coming to preschool dressed as sportspeople. A football match was also enjoyed between both sites with no red cards in sight! For the children making the big leap to school this September we have our annual graduation ceremony. This year it is July 19th. Tickets and times for your site are available from Main Street and Fourfields. We will be bidding a fond farewell to all children leaving us and wish you all the very best of luck and hope you settle in well in your new surroundings. Our new parent’s information evening is Wednesday August 27th at the Austin Hall on Main Street. You will get the chance to meet the managers and staff from both sites and have the opportunity to speak to them and members of the parents committee about what you and your child can expect from preschool. Please note there are no crèche facilities on this evening.

Our Year One and Foundation children had a fabulous time at the Peterborough showground taking part in a ‘Happy Chick Day’. The children loved holding two day old chicks (very carefully), learning about what happens inside an egg, as the chick develops. How the chicken lays an egg and the journey to the box and shops for us to eat. They even had to opportunity to see chickens laying eggs whilst they were there! The children were great ambassadors for the school taking part in a life cycle quiz, impressing the ‘Happy Chick Company’ and farmers with how much they had learnt that day. We are looking forward to our next visit to the Showground when the whole school attend a food and farming Day along with 5,000 other local school children. I am sure it will be a very exciting day with lots to see and learn.

Captain Carrot is very pleased with our work to support his healthy eating campaign and you may have even spotted us taking part in ‘Alert 2 Learn’ in the school playground before school. It has been great to see so many parents joining in too.
Little Acorn Pre School Our pre-school children have been observing our resident tadpoles, and were fascinated how they grew legs and changed to frogs. As they all seemed to enjoy this, we have ordered some caterpillars and the children will be able to watch as they grow and change. To coincide with this we will read The Hungry caterpillar and paint butterfly pictures. We have also been busy in the garden planting beetroot and runner beans. Our sunflowers have been growing well, and our older children have made a height chart so we can track their progress. We think it is important to celebrate diversity, and to teach children that we are all individuals. Therefore we planned an international week where parents from different countries came in to share a little of their culture with the children. We would like to express our thanks to all parents who kindly participated.

Fun in the sun
at the Yaxley Festival Over 75 students from the Stanground Academy took part in an extravaganza of music, song and dance at the Yaxley Festival last weekend. The expressive arts team, led by Mr Tymoczko, filled the stage on Saturday and Sunday with over 12 hours of performances from some of our most talented students. Support from staff, students and parents was overwhelming from the minute the parade left the Three Horseshoes pub, to the last performance by Emily Mescall on Sunday afternoon. Other attractions at the Stanground Academy marquee included a rowing competition and spinning bike display led by the sports centre. Hair and beauty were plaiting, nail stamping and creating colourful hair styles. Art and face painting was a very popular attraction led by the art team and year 11 students, Bethany Henson and Chris Chung. Children were also ’blown away’ by the bubble blowing experiment designed by the science department. The expressive arts team also led another great opportunity for the Academy to display the talents of our unique African Drumming, with individual workshops followed by an exciting community drumming session. Also under canvas, was the media workshop and transition stall. A fantastic weekend of sun and fun was enjoyed by all those who attended and thanks goes out to all the staff and students who gave up their time to promote the talent and outstanding work of the Academy.

The William de Yaxley Junior School We start this month by congratulating Scarlett Pallister(winner) and Holly Mills and Jack Willars (runners up) who were all awarded certificates by the Chair of Yaxley Parish Council, for taking part in the inter school Art Competition for the recent Yaxley Festival, very well done to them! June has been a very busy month with lots of activities happening: Year 5 visited the Stibbington Centre as part of their Rivers Topic. They measured the depth and speed of a river using metre sticks and a dog biscuit no less… Year 4 went pond dipping and searching for mini beasts at Ramsey Heights, as part of their topic work about the local area. The children in Year 6 enjoyed a three day residential at Finborough Hall. The children who didn’t take part in this visit enjoyed taking part in ‘survival’ activities in school. Many thanks to those people who contributed to our Summer Fayre, by giving their time as part of FOWDY (Friends of William de Yaxley), or donating items to sell, helping on the day, or coming along to enjoy the event, it all added up to an enjoyable and memorable event. Not to be out done by the mums on Mother’s Day, dad’s/granddads came into school to share their children’s learning as part of a Father’s Day treat.
We are already thinking about and preparing for the new school year in September. We have welcomed Year 2 children from Yaxley Infant School, who have visited our school on several occasions to familiarise themselves with their new school. The children in Years 3 – 5 have also spent a morning with their new class teacher and Year 6 have visited their secondary schools. At the end of term we are sad to be saying goodbye to Mrs Helen Charlton, Mrs Karen Wells, Mrs Abbie Houghton, Mrs Dawn Smith and Mrs Janet Rossin. We would like to thank them and send them all our best wishes for the future. Thank you to all those members of the community who help us through the year, by organising clubs, reading with the children, or looking after the pets. If you would like to help next year please contact the school office, we would love to hear from you.
Holme Village Preschool We continue to have fun with the children this summer term learning about different countries with our World Cup theme. Our focus is to develop their understanding of other countries such as how they live, cultural events, traditions and also their food, which is introduced in themed snack times each day. We have also been lucky for parents to support us with one family bringing in a bike from Holland for us to use, this allowed the children to examine it and sit in it too, which they found interesting. We are also planning some summer activities for our children and their parents which include a picnic and fun games at Ferry Meadows and our sponsored Toddle Waddle around Holmewood Hall. Both events give the children and parents a time to catch up, have fun and enjoy some time together – we just have our fingers crossed for sunshine!
Finally we hope you all have a wonderful summer and wish all our children in Year 6 every success, health and happiness for the future, as they move on to secondary school.
Fourfields Primary School
This term we have been on a bit of a winning cycle! Our Year 4 Cricketers won a local cricket competition and our football team won the local World Cup bringing home a fantastic trophy. Then we have Livia in Year 2 who has been nominated as a finalist for the RHS Young Gardener competition followed by our Year 6 children preparing their submissions for the Young Persons Film Competition. Judging by all the props and dramatics taking place around the school......we may yet have another trophy for our new trophy cabinet!
Stilton C of E Primary School We’re having an action packed summer term. Children from our Eco Council recently visited Waitrose, Peterborough, as part of their ‘Give and Gain’ Day. The children learnt about healthy eating and took part in a quiz to name as many fruit and vegetables as they could. We were then taken on a tour of the supermarket, including going in the fridge and freezer! The children rounded off their day by making their own fruit salads to take home.
No prizes for the whole school (including staff!) for taking part in our Zumba Afternoon – just fun memories of a good time! As we prepare for our Farmers’ Market on Friday 27th June (everyone welcome) and consider the miles our fruit and vegetables have travelled, we are exploring other ways of supporting sustainability and have introduced a textile and clothing bank for our school community and neighbours to recycle unwanted clothing. This has the added bonus of helping the Salvation Army AND the school. Look out for fliers and bags through your door and please support us by donating what you

can! Look out for the green ‘Recycle with Michael’ bank in our car park. Finally, it is this time of year when we wish our Year 6 well as they prepare for their new school and welcome the new families beginning their liaison with the school when their little ones start in September. We had several special visitors in school for our Sports Week. Children took part in lots of different sports, including football, golf, dodgeball, martial arts, ping pong, dance and Zumba. We also had our annual sports day. Children across the school were put into mixed-age groups and completed a circuit of different sporting activities. Grown-ups then joined their children for a picnic on the school field. On Friday 6th June, we celebrated Pentecost in school with a party. Each class made their own Pentecost poster. Then in the afternoon, we invited the Stilton over 60’s club into school to show the children’s work and sing some of our favourite hymns.

Nuisance calls The majority of us have experienced nuisance unsolicited calls and, as a result of pressure being put on the Government by consumer groups, thankfully they have now launched a new Action Plan to tackle this menace which includes the following:1: The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will now be able to take action against calls that are classed as ‘annoyance’ rather than ‘substantial distress’; this means far more calls will be covered. 2. Ofcom and the ICO will share information on rogue companies, leading to more fines. 3. The Ministry of Justice are currently consulting on whether PPI cold callers should face fines of up to 20% of their annual turnover. 4. The Government has asked Richard Lloyd, Executive Director of Which? (the consumer champion), to lead a task force reviewing how people consent to receiving marketing calls.
Advice To avoid unsolicited telephone calls, members of the public are encouraged to remove their personal details from the public arena. Many dog owners will already be well aware that grass seeds can be more than just an irritation to their dogs over the summer months. Grass seeds present a potential hazard to dogs from June until September. Dry sunny spells see a greater number of seeds falling to the ground where they can be picked up in the hair of a dog’s paw. Grass seeds vary in size, but all are like mini ‘darts’ with fine hairs and a sharp point at one end. The sharp point can easily pierce the thin skin between a dog’s toes. Because the seeds have tiny ‘micro barbs’ they do not just drop out of the skin; this is what makes them a potentially complicated problem to deal with. If a grass seed enters through the skin of your dog’s paw, this is highly irritating and can become quite sore. Your dog will usually start licking its paw excessively, there may be a red lump between their toes and they may become lame. It is important to seek veterinary advice as soon as you see these symptoms. Grass seeds will continue to migrate into your dog’s paw, and can travel a considerable way if not found. It has been known for seeds to travel all the way up a dog’s limb and into the chest.

The problem with grass seeds… Keeping the hair on your dog’s paws short, checking ears and paws after a walk and avoiding long dry grass whenever possible are good ways to reduce the chances of an irritating encounter with a grass seed.
Sometimes the tail of the grass seed can be seen sticking out of the swelling between your dog’s toes and a vet or owner can remove the seed easily. If the seed has travelled deeper into the tissue, sedation is required to hunt for it. Prompt action is important – it is far easier to find a grass seed close to the skin’s surface than one that has penetrated deeper.
Grass seeds can also find their way into ears and eyes and can even be snorted up canine noses. If your dog suddenly starts to shake their head after a walk, this might indicate a grass seed in their ear canal. This requires prompt attention, because seeds can travel towards the ear drum and cause problems there. Cats can get grass seeds in their eyes and ears, but this is generally uncommon.

There are many things that annoy me in life, but recently I have discovered something that people apparently now find acceptable, and it makes me so angry I could pull my hair out. I have on a few occasions now been to Co-op to grab some milk or some cake, and seen people walking round doing their shopping in pyjamas, slippers and a dressing gown. What in the name of social standards is the matter with you?! What did you need so urgently that you didn’t have time to get dressed for? I had a look in your trolley you had carrots and a chicken for goodness sake could that not have waited?! If you’d rushed to the shops to pick up a defibrillator then I could understand the implied urgency, but carrots? And I’ll tell you something else – if it was 8 o clock in the morning then I could probably just about accept it, but on a couple of occasions it’s been after lunch! More often than not, my anger at society manifests itself in a way that is socially responsible; I go home and moan at my wife, who ignores me and goes back to watching Holby City. Last week however, the line was crossed. It is no longer enough for me to complain about this to my indifferent wife, I have to write it in my blog so that both my fans can understand it. I went to Spar last week around half seven in the evening, and there was a group of teenage girls hanging around like teenagers do. One of them however, was wearing a pink leopard print onesie. Leaving aside my own opinions on the onesie (dreadful, since you asked), the only acceptable time to be wearing a onsie outside the confines of your own home is if you are doing a charity fun run. Yet there she was, and even worse there her mates were, as if it was the most normal thing in the world.
