Yaxley Parish Council It is with great sadness that I have to report that Tony Maltby, one of our very experienced ground staff passed away on 3rd October 2014. Not only will he be missed by his family, friends, colleagues and the council, but by the many sports men, women and children who have come to know him as he looked after Queens Park and the Recreation ground through the seasons amongst his many duties. He was well respected within the team and helped with many useful changes for the betterment of the village. He will be missed. We are pleased to welcome Helen Taylor as Clerk for Yaxley Parish Council. Helen commenced working for the Council at the start of November. With her background of previously working for Huntingdonshire District Council Helen has hit the ground running bringing a vast amount of knowledge to help with further improvements within the village. Welcome Helen. So what have we been doing this year? Our workforce have been busy these last few months not only maintaining the public areas, cleaning and repairing bus shelters, maintaining the sports fields they have also commenced a program of improvements to our facilities. Thus far work has been completed in the Pavilion and Austin Hall, with some deep cleaning and redecorating. The compliments have been well received and we intend to

maintain this as a rolling program through the coming months using our people and reduce contractor costs. The Parish Council have made a local safety improvement initiative application with Cambridgeshire County Council for a pedestrian crossing point with central refuge island at a location between Shackleton Way and Chapel Street area of Broadway. Currently with no safe crossing point along this stretch of road for people and children especially using the school bus we consider this a high safety priority. We hope to have news on our application in the New Year. While a high number of dog owners have accepted responsibility in clearing up after their dogs. We are getting complaints of dogs being allowed to run free and owners not bagging and binning waste

Councillor Gulson with bulb planting team in grassed open areas such as Middleton’s Recreation ground. We must remind people that these are sports and or playing areas for all age groups and the health risk posed by not clearing up after dogs gives great concern. We must ask that dogs be kept on leads and any mess be placed in the waste bins provided. We are asking HDC dog
warden to patrol these areas and take appropriate action. You may have noticed the work going on in Pound Lane between the Church and Vicarage. A team of volunteers from within the community have commenced reclaiming the area back for all to enjoy eventually installing a path, viewing area overlooking the Wykes.

Onesie, Pudsey...£580 Louise Wootton, local mum and business woman, worked hard raising money for Children in Need last month. She was sponsored to wear a Pudsey onesie all week for the school runs and for her Music for Little People sessions (it was hot work!). She encouraged the members of Music for Little People to dress up too and decorate Pudsey bear pictures with coins. Louise also made cakes and biscuits to sell at all her sessions during the week. Great fun was had by all and a fantastic total of over £580 was raised. Louise runs Music for Little People classes for babies and toddlers up to school age in Yaxley, Eye and Netherton. A FREE trial is offered for new starters.

The ‘Impaired Senses’ group

Beryl, Mark and Chris Maltby, the family of the late Tony Maltby, who sadly passed away on Friday 3rd October would like to thank you all for the kind cards and messages that we have received.
Nikki Downes entertained us with songs from many different decades. Members then enjoyed a meal of soup and crumble.
A special ‘thank you’ to Peterborough District Funeral Services Ltd for all the respect and care they gave Tony while he was in their care. Tony would have said “the bed was a bit to be desired but at least the breakfast was free” Thank you also to the Parish Councilors for all their kindness and support they have shown, Tony worked for the Yaxley Parish Council for 5 years. To Vanessa Corbishley for the Humanist Service, all enjoyed it. Donations were in lieu of flowers and will go to the British Heat Foundation and Diabetes. Kindest regards, Beryl Maltby.

Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club
Yaxley Riders
Honouring the great and the good of village cycling at awards evening. The Bollywood Tiger hosted the first of what is sure to become an annual awards evening for the Yaxley Riders Cycling Group. The Riders are soon to celebrate 5 years in existence and 80 people enjoyed delicious food before the serious business of the evening. Group founder member James Warrener spoke on the importance of the group and its humble origins to the growing influence on village sporting life that Riders is today. “It’s a big part of the community now” he told us. “We want to represent the village and get more and more people out on their bikes and being healthy” The awards were voted for by the group’s membership and winners were... Paul Griffin – Event of the year and Yaxley Rider of the year Stuart Bogg – Most hammered (toughest). Helen Harris – Most improved Yaxley Rider Danny Parker – Newcomer of the year The riders are hosting regular Sunday rides from the Sunny Cafe at 0900 throughout the winter with led rides for all abilities.

I have to report the passing of one of our retired nonagenarian members Harvey Key at the grand old age of 94! Harvey and his wife Mary were typical of the many couples who enjoyed the gentle exercise and sunshine of our sport for many years. Keen gardeners, they supplied the plants for our flower beds. We could always rely on a magnificent display. AGM - 40 Members attended, Chairman Graham and Secretary Kathy were able to report a very satisfactory season thanking Captains of our seven League teams and of course the people who have kept our green in superb condition! Retiring Treasurer Anita was able to tell us that the payments on our new Pavilion have now been cleared and she presented a solid set of figures with a healthy balance for our new Treasurer Gill King to commence her duties with! Chairman Graham presented Anita with a magnificent Bouquet and the sincere thanks of all our members for the many years she has performed this highly responsible job, our new President will be Joyce Needham one of the hardest working of our members. An excellent start to our winter social events, the Beetle Drive, good old fashioned fun, plenty of laughs and a few bob raised to help meet the ever growing costs of running a bowls club.

First concert of our winter programme was a resounding success for both Choir and a highly appreciative audience. When things run smoothly as was the case here it usually means a lot of work has been done previously! In this case it was Trevor and his friends at the Methodist Chapel at Whittlesey, I am sure we will be returning to this venue in the not too distant future. As promised last month the details for our Christmas sing along at Yaxley Methodist Chapel have now been finalised. It will be held on Friday 19th December at 7.30PM ticket price £4 for adults £2 for under Christmas Bazaar 6th December Coffee and 16s this includes refreshments. WI Updates
Holme WI At our November meeting we had the delightful company of Wendy Knowles, Wendy’s friend had an idea to raise funds for Macmillan by starting a local quiz, and this turned into a simultaneous quiz across the whole country raising a total of £150,000 for the charity. AS part of bringing this quiz together was an appearance on the T.V. quiz Eggheads, Wendy told us all about her adventure from applying to the programme to the actual day, a fun tale of her experience with a serious undertone of raising money for charity. Over the next month we have arranged a meal at Peterborough collage, a games night at the Admiral Wells and our annual seasonal meal will be at the Admiral Wells in January. Our next meeting will be at Holme village hall on Thursday 4th December at 7.30pm when the Rev Miles Falla will be speaking on the Buckden Handbell Ringers, Please come along
Yaxley WI In October as well as our normal meeting we held a ‘group meeting’ with the 3 other institutes within our group together with other institutes from the Peterborough area. Our speaker was Linda Scoles who entertained us with the differences in the language shared by America and us, some ordinary English words have quite shocking meanings in the States. Linda is a very amusing lady who speaks on several different subjects, and is highly recommended. After the talk we all enjoyed a ‘picnic’s upper. At the end of October three teams took part in a W I quiz held at Yaxley British Legion and one of our teams was lucky enough to win. Our December meeting will be held as usual at the Lancaster Club where we will be entertained by Jeremy Hilliard’s singing after enjoying some Christmas food.

Great Fen Update
A Lost Landscape Reborn You may have recently visited the wonderful elevated hide at Rymes Reedbed called ‘Trundle Mere Lookout’ and observed the landscape in front of you and noticed some diggers appearing on the fields to the east of the developing reedbed and wondered what is going on? Well an extension to Rymes Reedbed named ‘Kesters Docking’ is starting its restoration journey. The area is named after an area shown on an old map of Whittlesea Mere. Physical and
ecological studies indicated that Kester’s Docking would be most suited to a mixture of reedbed, open water, and wet and dry grassland integrating with the adjacent Rymes Reedbed. This mixture of habitats will create an area of land that should encourage a range of wildlife including target species such as Bittern and Water Vole. Keep an eye on the Great Fen website for updates on the restoration process.

Yaxley Christmas Ride is coming to town Yaxley’s on-call firefighters will be hosting Father Christmas again this year to spread some festive fun through the village for the annual Christmas Ride.
The fire-fighters have organised the Christmas Ride to raise cash for charity for more than 40 years and look forward to carrying on this tradition when the ride kicks off the week before Christmas. From Monday, December 15, through to Thursday, December 18, the ride will start at 6.30pm and will follow a different route each night around the village, spreading festive cheer and collecting for charity. Jamie Bovington, a firefighter at Yaxley who is organising the event, said: “The Christmas Ride is a fantastic opportunity for the firefighters to get out into the local community and play festive music, carols and generally spread some festive joy while collecting for very worthy charities.

On the twelfth day of Christmas my pet found to eat…. 12 twists of tinsel 11 lights a-shining 10 turkey platters 9 ninja turtles 8 Christmas puddings 7 baubles hanging 6 family stockings 5 - pounds – of – sweets 4 mince pies 3 colouring pens 2 fluffy gloves And a box of chocs under the tree A familiar carol to us all but with a veterinary twist - all of the 12 includes something which is potentially dangerous to our pets. Many people know chocolate is poisonous to our pets but did you know raisins and sultanas (Christmas cake, pudding and mince pies) are also highly toxic? New toys and Christmas decorations can easily be swallowed by pets – you name it, a pet somewhere has eaten it! There are also the popular discarded meat bones – tasty but indigestible and which often splinters into sharp edges.
It’s true, many of these dangers are always present but at Christmas there are more temptations for our pets and more distractions for us. “Over-indulgent” pets often find themselves in our hospital for a few days for our Vets to perform emergency surgery to remove the blockages or to flush the animal’s systems of toxins. PLEASE NOTE: Another toxin common this time of year is antifreeze. It is highly toxic to our pets and they love the sweet taste of it. Please be careful throughout the winter and ensure spillages are cleared up promptly.

Peterborough junior football club Yaxley Whites are in desperate need of new players to prevent their team from folding. The Under 12 White team (school year 7), who play in the Peterborough & District Junior Alliance League, are short on numbers. Team coach Marc Humphries admits: “We are struggling to get enough players each week and we are getting very close to calling it a day for the teams. “This will mean those players that do turn up each week will lose out and we want to avoid that at all costs as they are committed and loyal to their team. Any Year 6 players that are of a higher standard can also play for our age group as it is permitted by the league. “We are not looking for the next Messi, but boys and girls who are interested in playing and being part of a great club.” “We train on Thursdays in Yaxley and take part in days out as a team at POSH matches throughout the season whilst trying to keep the subs low as possible. By the time you read this, the next round will have been played against Fakenham Town and if we can win through that one hopes will be high of getting to a quarter final, or whisper it, beyond! The club still remain in the mix for the United Counties League title, competing with rivals AFC Rushden & Diamonds and Holbeach. Elsewhere in the club, the U18s have put their FA Youth cup behind them with a better league run. The most recent win being against Kettering Town, a non league club who’s name everyone will be aware of. December is a big month of fixtures for all of the clubs teams and if you consult www.yaxleyfc.com you will find details of all of the matches for both senior and junior teams. These are heady days to be a Cuckoos fan and all at the club appreciate the effort and commitment of fans that not only come and pay their money to watch home matches, but are travelling away from home in bigger numbers week on week. Take the turkey out of the fridge, cover with foil and allow it to come to room temperature. Do the same with the stuffing and butter so that it softens for the morning. With all the newly created space, fill up the fridge with wines, mineral water and fresh juice
Christmas day: lunch to be served at 2:00pm 7.30am Preheat the oven and prepare the turkey 8.15am Make the bread sauce if you haven’t already. If you are using a warming oven, put in the required plates and serving dishes. Set up coffee and tea trays for later.
Early December Order your turkey or buy a frozen one now. To work out what size you need, count on serving 450g per person. A frozen turkey will need 4–5 days to thaw. Make and freeze your mince pies. Think about the tabletop decorations if you’re planning something special. (Check out ABC Meats advert on page 30 or Moor Farm Meats below).
One week before Christmas Start to defrost the turkey at the back of the fridge. Write your shopping list and purchase all non-perishables (don’t forget pet food). Buy milk in cartons and freeze in case of emergency.
Two days before Christmas Make cranberry sauce and store in the fridge. For stuffings and bread sauce, you will need stale bread. Cut and cube it now and lay it out on a baking tray in a single layer. Make sure all napkins and tablecloths are washed and ironed. Wash or polish cutlery, glasses, serving dishes and china.
Pick up the flowers you ordered for the table. If possible, wait until Christmas Eve to buy vegetables, salads and fish; if not, buy them now.
11:30am Prepare sausage and bacon rolls for cooking. Reheat bread sauce and place it in a jug with butter on top to melt over the surface, and keep warm.
Christmas Eve morning
Noon: Start steaming the Christmas pudding. If you’re drinking red wine with your meal, you may want to give it time to breathe.; open now. You’ve survived the morning, well done! Pour yourself a glass of bucks fizz to celebrate!
Pick up fresh turkey. Do last minute shopping. Prepare turkey gravy. Defrost mince pies. Prepare your chosen pudding and refrigerate. If you’re serving a traditional pudding, make brandy butter and refrigerate.
Christmas Eve afternoon Prepare stuffings. Don’t refrigerate, but leave covered in a cool place. The stuffings should not be too cold when you stuff the turkey. Prepare the vegetables. Peel potatoes and put in cold water in the fridge. Prepare other vegetables and store in plastic bags in the fridge. Make bread sauce. Cover tightly with cling film and store in the fridge. Set the table.
12:45pm: Make the roast potatoes and prepare saucepans of boiling water for sprouts and any other vegetables. 1:15pm: Remove turkey from oven, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest. 1:30pm: Check bacon rolls, remove and keep warm. 1:45pm: Put sprouts on to cook and gravy on to heat. While they are cooking, dish up food into serving dishes and carve the turkey. Check Christmas pudding. 2:00pm:

Holme Village Pre-school
Stilton Pre School It’s lovely to see all our last year’s Pre-School children settled in to reception class - well done to you all! Last half term our children had fun learning about Diwali by reading the Diwali story and making clay tea lights. To support their learning the children also enjoyed scraping out pumpkins and drawing faces on them. After an adult cut the faces out, the children extended their learning by deciding to dress them up in hats! For firework night we learnt how to keep safe, made some lovely firework pictures and for snack the children made hotdogs and bread stick sprinklers! Yum Yum! Without even knowing it the children have been learning about shapes, numbers and letter sounds and to help support our Polish children we have been listening to Polish music and looking at Polish books. We are all very excited about this half term decorating playgroup up for our special visitor on the 15th of December (in line with the EYFS we will also be learning a lot but don’t tell the children!) Thank you for the continued support and Merry Christmas to everyone.
We are holding our Annual Playgroup Santa Float on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th December 4-6pm so look out for him on his musical sleigh around the village with his helpers collecting to raise valuable funds. On Sunday 14th December Playgroup will be running a Christmas fete at Stilton Village Memorial Hall 10am-12pm so come along with your pennies for some tasty cakes, festive shopping and fun activities for the children including a special visitor from the North Pole!
The children have been enjoying a range of activities based around the Hindu festival of Diwali, including looking at India on the globe. Continuing our autumn theme we have made ‘spider web’ cakes which gave the opportunity for the children to use their mathematical skills by measuring and weighing the ingredients. We are continuing to focus on this area this term by measuring length and size and then using our cutting skills. As this term builds up to Christmas we will be learning new songs and rhymes ready for our Christmas performance for all our children’s families and then celebrating this fun time of year at our Christmas party. Little Acorn Pre School The children had a fantastic Halloween and a great effort was made by all to dress up, even the staff dressed up. Many thanks to all parents. This month our parents had fun spending some quality time with their children during parent’s activity week. The children were very proud to show their parents what activities they do and we able to show them around the new building. Our children have been practicing really hard for their upcoming Christmas concert and have been singing beautifully. They are all getting very excited for the Christmas party. The children will also be making Christmas cards and tree decorations to take home. We would like to wish all our Families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Holme School
This term has seen us take on the role of local historians, studying Yaxley’s history, and unearthing a time capsule in the school grounds. The children were enthralled as they dusted off a variety of interesting artefacts.
This term we welcomed our new Reception children into school. They have formed our new ‘Hedgehogs’ class and have settled in so well; it seems as if they been here for so much longer than 7 weeks!
Year Two had an exciting trip to the fire station, where they learnt about the life of Oswald Richardson and fire engines through the ages. Year One have focused on the history of our school, with the fascinating school log book being their primary source of information. Their research will be demonstrated in a museum style exhibition for families as part of our regular ‘Learning Presentations’. The focus then shifted to our festive celebrations and rehearsing for our performances of Whoops-a-Daisy Angel.
Stilton C of E Primary School We’re having a busy Autumn Term at Stilton C of E Primary School. Children in Rabbit, Badger and Hedgehog classes recently visited the Fitzwilliam museum in Cambridge. The children studied Ancient Egyptian artefacts and looked at the sculptures and paintings around the museum.
The children in school have been busy taking part in enrichment activities: making apple crumble, chocolate covered apples for Bonfire Night; taking part in the village 1940s weekend; baking bread with the travelling cooks from Cambridgeshire Catering Services; making a ‘human poppy’ on the school
The Foundation Stage children impressed everybody with their stunning dance skills. The glitter has been out in force to make beautiful decorations to the sound of Christmas carols! We are also thinking of those less fortunate than us, holding a Spotty Disco for Children in Need and raising money for the Nalaraami School water project by wearing our favourite jumper to school.

In school we had an RE day, focusing on remembrance of World War 1. Children in Key Stage 2 took part in drama workshops, where they were thinking about what it was like to fight in the trenches. Across the school, we were thinking about what truce and peace means and how we can show peace in school. Two of our Year 6 children attended the remembrance service at the church and did a reading. The whole school also took part in having 2 minutes silence. Owl and robin class have started having reading afternoons on Fridays, where grown-ups are invited into school to read with their children at the end of the day. We are looking forward to these continuing throughout the year.

William de Yaxley Academy From the title of this month’s report you will have noticed that we have become an academy; sponsored by the Ely Diocese. There are a number of key benefits to becoming an academy, including a greater flexibility to prioritise aspects of teaching and learning that are relevant to the school, in order to ensure that all pupils succeed. If you would like to know more about academies the Department for Education website provides information and answers. This is the time of year when we start to think about others. We have raised money for the BBC Children in Need charity by dressing up as Super Heroes and having lots of fun running around the field, baking cakes; just a couple of the activities the children came up with, to raise money for children less fortunate than themselves, both in our country and abroad. Money was also raised for the British Legion and the children took part in their own Remembrance Assembly during which some of the children held their own crosses that
they had made. You may also have seen the poppies growing outside the school office planted by Mrs Reed and Keiran to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WW1. “I’ve got you!” the farmers cried, as the Burwell foxes were sited. Children had a rare opportunity to record their very own TV news reports using state of the art equipment and to explore what it was like backstage as a director, floor manager, or titles manager to name but a few roles. They also shared the clay tiles that they had made.

We are very pleased to share with you that following a recent OFSTED inspection we were found to be a GOOD school which provides outstanding care to our children. To find out more please check out our website to read the OFSTED report. At the time of writing we have been focussing on sustainability. Since its introduction in May we have collected over 703 kilograms of textiles through our ‘Recycle with Michael’ bank and continue to recycle our plastics and cardboard. In addition to our fantastic school garden where we model composting as well as recycling rain water, we are looking to source our Year 1 play area with recycled materials which we will make into learning opportunities for our children. If you have any old car tyres, a (real!) steering wheel, guttering, wooden boards, funnels, children’s sized wheel barrow, unwanted decking... and you would like to donate
them... please let us know! We are also looking for a shed / storage unit to store these items...fair offers would be made! Please follow our progress on our website. The whole school had a visit from Amey Cespa who talked about the importance of recycling and Year 4 have had Wateraid visit them to explain about the importance of water in this and other countries. Finally, we are holding an electrical recycling day on Tuesday 6th January where you can drop off ANY electrical equipment which you no longer use and this will be broken down and the individual parts / metals recycled. This is an ideal opportunity to have a clear out after Christmas and help our school at the same time! The bank will be placed in our car park from 7am through to 5pm. Please avoid peak school times if possible. We wish everyone a Happy Christmas and hope 2015 is everything they wish it to be.

Question: I believe I have to file a self-assessment tax return and have been told I should have a U.T.R. – what is this? Answer: U.T.R. stands for “Unique Taxpayer Reference” that is a 10-digit number completely unique to you and without this you will not be able to file a tax return. The deadline for filing your 2014 tax return is 31 January 2015, so if you have not registered for self assessment you should do so as soon as possible. It could take up to six weeks to receive your U.T.R. as without it HMRC will not allow you to file your return leaving you open for potential penalties.

I wonder if our society has lost the meaning of Christmas in the “swamp”. UK internet shoppers visited retail sites 107 million times on Christmas Day 2012. John Lewis saw peak online activity late in the evening on Christmas Day. In 2011 it is estimated that people in the UK spent £594 million on unwanted Christmas gifts. Evidence for this includes the 1.5 million new items for sale listed on eBay on Boxing Day 2011! One in three adults expected to start 2014 in debt because of Christmas spending. Perhaps we need to do some pruning and get rid of some of the things which have overgrown. When we do that we will make it easier for the light of Jesus Christ to shine in our lives and we will find the living water which flows into all of our hearts. Ingrid and I called this area “the swamp” because of all the mosquitoes which live there. Now, following an initiative involving Des Watt, Reg Bingham, Kevin Gulson and the Parish Council and members of St Peter’s – huge thanks to you all – this area has been transformed. Some of the trees have been pruned, the stream and pond have been cleared, pathways have been added, plants and bulbs have been planted. Because the water is flowing again the mosquito population has greatly decreased! The area is now full of light and I look forward to seeing the Spinney being developed for the enjoyment of everyone in Yaxley and beyond.

The future is something we all have a responsibility to work with to make the best we can from it. Personally, I have been immensely privileged to have been allowed to share the lives of so many kind, generous, interesting and sometimes hugely courageous people. I am grateful to have worked in such an excellent medical practice and would like to thank the doctors and staff I have worked with during my time here for their support and sometimes forbearance. Drew Pontikis Once again it’s the most wonderful time of the year. The time for the frantic purchasing of tat to give to people you don’t care to see for the other 364 days of the year.
The time for stockpiling vast mountains of food that would cure third world hunger, enough alcohol to pickle a reindeer, and Christmas crackers in quantities that might make the terrorist task force take an interest in you. Parties come thick and fast; spending nightmarish evenings with either the girl from work with flashing santa deely boppers who doesn’t realise she’s in her forties, two atheists who make it their mission to convert you to Paganism (“Christmas is a Pagan holiday you know”) or a racist auntie with a point to prove about today’s society. It may snow, it may not – rest assured it will not be exactly the right amount of snow to keep you off of school/work, meaning we’re forced into the self-induced frostbite of trying to de-ice the windscreen before heading out to brave the elements, unsure if you are destined to ever return. Christmas, by rights, should be just awful. And yet all the cynicism seems to evaporate come Christmas morning. For a few brief hours, you are living in a John Lewis advert – surrounded by happy smiling faces as the picturesque Christmas tree offers forth presents wrapped the night before. Lunch arrives and mum has finally found a way to improve brussel sprouts; namely adding bacon to them. The turkey, ignored the rest of the year for being too dry, is also transformed with the addition of bacon and, whilst perfectly fine on any other occasion, sausages are given a festive kick by being wrapped in bacon. As we grow older we grow a little sadder, and life becomes a little bit less magical. Happy moments become lost in the grey drudgery of the daily grind, and the endless cycle of work to live and live to work rumbles on remorselessly. That is why, Pagan festival or not, Christmas is such an important time – it’s a time for people to be together, and to be happy. It makes the rest of the year worth bothering with. Happy Christmas everyone, I’ll see you on the other side.

As part of the National Consumer Week 2014 (3-7th November), residents in Peterborough were being urged to look out for rogue doorstep traders preying on elderly and vulnerable neighbours.

Top tips for a quick divorce
• Keep the particulars (“reasons”) as gentle as possible. Unreasonable behaviour is the most common ground for divorce but it requires you to list examples of behaviour that you find to be unacceptable. Whilst you may be keen to put the knife in and point out everything they have ever done to annoy you, you actually only need to fill out a very small paragraph. The judge isn’t looking for anything exciting, he just wants evidence that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. Keep them general to avoid getting the other party’s back up which could make them more likely to contest the divorce, which you really don’t want • Obtain an official copy of your marriage certificate, or dig out the original, early on. The court cannot start the process without this. Very often, this adds a delay at the start, as it can take up to 14 days to get a copy of a certificate from the church or Register Office. • Warn your spouse before you start.
