Ships in bottles Local man, Robert Arrowsmith, first started to make ships in bottles after he found a book on the subject in the library. It fascinated him and he decided to try and make one.

“Although I succeeded in making it, I wasn’t happy with the finished result, and thought I could do a lot better. Learning from my mistakes, I made a second one, and then just carried on; you have it now I am hooked. I have now become a member of the European Association of Ships in Bottles, and also the American Association.”

Did you know...? The technique of putting ships into bottles developed during the early years of the 19th century in the forecastles of the old sailing ships. In an era when sea voyages lasted months and years, and entertainment was self-evolved, off-watch sailors occupied themselves creating bits of nautical folk art from whatever raw material came to hand. It is not surprising then that an empty bottle might have piqued their imagination and led to devising the technique for displaying miniature ships in bottles. Whatever the origin, the technique for putting ships into bottles was well known to sailors of all the major seafaring nations. Evidence of their work can be found in nautical museums throughout Europe, North America, and Japan. Unfortunately, despite widespread knowledge of the technique, good early examples of the ship-in-bottle art have become scarce.

Yaxley Parish Council Fly tipping With a view to improving our village scene, if you see any rubbish as a result of fly tipping on public property, please report to HDC via http://northhuntingdonshire.shapeyourplace.org Alternatively, report to the our clerk’s office. Huntingdonshire DC will not only clear away but are also looking to prosecute offenders. Cemetery parking Places at the cemetery are for people to pay their respects or attending funerals. We are finding people are using these slots as day parking, even worse these cars are obstructing the access gates for funerals causing concern on what is an emotional day for relatives and friends. We will be noting the registrations of persistent offenders and review what action can be taken, but please leave these spaces for the purpose they were designed. Notice boards The new notice boards are becoming so popular with people looking to advertise their group’s activities within the village. To accommodate all we ask for your notice to be A5 in size please. Contact the clerk for your groups notice to be placed on the boards. Businesses are also asking if they can advertise on these notice boards but there is not the space. Lancaster Club Play Bowls Mini Beer Fest & Family Weekends Friday 9th -Sun 11th May & Friday 18th - Sun 20th July

I am writing to voice my concerns over the state of the Shopping Centre and also two bus stops on the main road which are broken.

at Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club (Behind The Farmers on Broadway)

Open days on...

A sport for all ages

Sunday 27th April and Saturday 3rd May (10am-12 and 2-4pm)

I am sure you will agree that this is due to neglect and it should not have got to this stage.

Have you ever wondered what is like to play bowls? Have you wanted to try and not known where to go? Then why not come along to one of our tutored open days at Yaxley Bowls Club and give it a try.

I think Yaxley is rather run down and needs cleaning up, especially the Shopping Centre. The sign blew off in the storm a few weeks ago and...surprise, surprise, it has not been replaced.

A Tutored Bowls Day represents the perfect introduction to club life for any new participant and is the perfect way to meet people and be introduced to the sport of bowls.

I can fully understand people not wanting to move into the area when they see the state of it. On a separate note there is some waste ground along Main Street which contains some old outbuildings where children play. I feel it is only a matter of time before there is an accident. Those buildings need to be demolished. From Tony Isaac T: 07709715574.

Rumour has it...

that someone has taken over the fit England Unit in Eagle Business Park and will be opening a Plumbing/Heating/ Electrical wholesalers which will be open to the public and trade, more details to follow next month.

April bulletin from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service

Holme WI

Yaxley WI 23 members and 1 visitor attended our March meeting where we were entertained by Anne Robinson of Celebration Cakes. She very expertly showed us some wonderful Easter Cup Cakes and then judged our own competition entries. Members were reminded of our Group Meeting at Glatton on 27 March, the Federation Day at St Ives on 16 April and our Birthday Dinner at the Stilton Cheese on 24 April. Our next meeting will be on 10 April at the Lancaster Club and our Speaker will be Sue Jackson on her life as a nurse. Visitors very welcome.

Our March meeting saw us celebrate our 65th Birthday as a WI, one of our members Liz Lovesy had made us a delicious cake for the occasion and it was cut by our longest serving member, Andrea Barker and our newest member Janice Robertson. Veronica Hewins was our speaker for this month and she gave a fantastic talk and demonstration on two of her traditional Indian recipes, if the smell of the curry flavours were not enough to make us all feel hungry, then the taste and look were superb. Veronica also kept us entertained with her knowledge of the ingredients and her incredible life story, a very good evening. Next meeting Thursday 3rd April, 7.30pm at Holme Village Hall. Our theme on this night will be “It’s Magic” with Chris Bylett, come along and find out more, visitors are very welcome.

Holme Afternoon Tea Club

by Sue Knight

Recently, two of our members, Norma and Tony Finnegan, showed slides and talked about their trip to China. This was followed by a meal of cottage pie and apple and custard. The next meeting is afternoon tea at a location to be revealed on the day. Members to meet at the Village Hall on Wednesday 9 April at 2.30pm.

Business owners can take advantage of free workshops to help their company get to grips with fire safety and legislation. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Fire Protection team is running free sessions in Cambridge and Peterborough. The workshops take place on the second Tuesday of every month at Parkside Place Community Fire and Rescue Station, in Cambridge, and on the third Tuesday of the month at Dogsthorpe Fire Station, in Peterborough. The general workshop aims to give a brief explanation of the Fire Safety Order and the requirements of a fire risk assessment. It lasts about four hours and is free of charge. To attend a workshop, or for more information, call CFRS Fire Protection team on (01733) 353206 to reserve a place. Flag Fen welcomes its first lamb of spring

The little Soay lamb was born on 6 March and is the first of the season’s lambs born at the site. Soay sheep are a fascinating primitive breed, which originate from the island of Soay near the Western Isles of Scotland. Soay sheep naturally shed their wool and do not need shearing.

Wool wanted for baby hats We previously put in an appeal to readers who enjoy knitting or crocheting to make baby hats for Bergea Hospital in Tanzania. We had some hats crocheted and local reader, Ann Rowell, has sent in a photo of a baby hat that she has crocheted and she has made many more. We are now asking readers whether they might have any spare wool that they do not want or do not use anymore?

STOP PRESS

Update

Lots of beautiful hats have been created for the babies in Tanzania - we’ve already collected over 1,600! An amazing achievement so a big thank you to everyone. We’re planning on running this project until the end of June 2014 so please keep those knitting needles and crochet hooks at work. We’re now also making squares to sew together for baby blankets. The squares need to be 15cm x 15cm and, like the hats, can be any colour, yarn or pattern. A blanket is 60cm x 75cm if you would like the challenge of producing a complete one. The collection box for items continues to be in Yaxley Library.

If anyone has any wool in their cupboards that they are not using it could be put to very good use.

It costs £239 to send 1 cubic metre of hats to Tanzania. We’re very grateful to the local person, who wishes to remain anonymous, who has donated the cost of sending our hats to Tanzania. Donations are always extremely welcome; if you would like to donate there is a paypal ‘button’ on the charity website, www.kofia.org.uk We’re bowled over by the kindness and skill of everyone who is helping to save the lives of malnourished and premature babies - just by keeping them warm. Thank you!

Please drop off your spare wool at the Yaxley Library. You can use the same box that the hats are collected in.

Church Events & Updates YAXLEY METHODIST CHAPEL

Holy Week Off to school! ST MARY’S CHURCH

You will probably have heard that your church of St Mary is to undergo some major work and to allow this to happen, the church’s ‘governors’ decided to close the church while all this work is in progress. Thankfully, the Headteacher and Governors of Farcet School have agreed that the church could meet there until the work is complete, and for this, we are very grateful – as is our bishop, Bishop Stephen! Work begins on March 24th and so the church’s first service will be held in the school hall on Sunday March 30th which is Mothering Sunday. Our usual pattern of worship is to have Holy Communion (led by Rev Anne) on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month and Morning Prayer, a less formal service (led by Barrie), on the other Sundays of the month. All these services start at 10.30 and are usual finished by 11.15 – 11.30 when we have some chat-time over a tea or coffee. We are a very warm, friendly, and welcoming people at St Mary’s and we would be very pleased to welcome YOU at any of our services in school – and after, when we move back into our ‘mended and decorated’ building.

Holy Week commemorates the last week of the earthly life of Jesus before his crucifixion on Good Friday up to his resurrection on Easter Sunday. It begins with Palm Sunday which celebrates Jesus’ triumphant arrival in Jerusalem for the Jewish Festival of Passover. 13th April is Palm Sunday and our morning service starts at 10.30. Come and join in singing Hosanna to The King. Thursday of Holy Week is known as Maundy Thursday. On that day Jesus shared ‘The Last Supper’ with his friends and followers. Of course Good Friday is a time for reflection. 20th April is Easter Sunday we celebrate Jesus raising from the dead and this joyous service will be held at 9.00am. Why not join this celebration with us?

ST PETER’S CHURCH

Easter joy We would love to share our Easter joy with you all and invite you to join us at one or more of our services over the Easter period. On Good Friday we will have an All Age Service at 11am and a quiet meditative Hour at the Cross at 2pm. On Easter Sunday we will have a traditional Holy Communion service at 9am and an All Age Communion service at 11am. You are all very welcome to these services. For details of all our Easter services please visit our website at www.saintpeters.co.uk. Please contact me for the details of services at St Giles, Holme.

On behalf of all at St Mary’s, we wish you God’s Peace and Blessings,

Coffee morning is on Saturday, 12th April and as usual homemade cakes, tea and coffee are on sale from 10 am

We did everything we had hoped to do and much more besides. I know that all 14 of us have some memories which will stay with us for a life time. Our thanks also to those of you who contributed to the cost of building a home for a widow. As you can see from the photo the house is in an incredibly beautiful location although it has no mains electricity and the water supply is a 20 minute walk away. On the day before we left Cyangugu we were able to hand the house over to Bishop Nathan ready for the widow to move in.

FREE initial telephone advice. Further appointments available at times & venues convenient to you.

We took gifts to children who are sponsored by members of St Peter’s and were humbled by the way these children spontaneously shared their presents with their friends. This is clearly an attitude which they take into adulthood. Both children and adults were delighted to see us and welcomed us with open arms (literally). People of all ages offered us generous hospitality and gave us so much out of the very little which they have. We were also struck by the joy of the people of Rwanda and by their thankfulness to God for what they have. As we prepare to celebrate Easter my prayer is that we too would be full of joy. Just like the people of Rwanda who suffered a terrible genocide just 20 years ago many of us will have much to be sad about at the moment. However, one of the messages of Easter is that God has overcome the forces of darkness and we are promised a future where death, crying, mourning and pain will be no more. I hope that this knowledge will be a source of great joy to us all whether life today is relatively comfortable, very difficult or somewhere in between.

Family Law Worries – Court is NOT the only option When a couple separate decisions have to be made including arrangements for the children of the family and how to divide the finances to ensure everyone’s housing and income needs are met now and in the future. In an ideal world couples would sit down together and work out an agreement, but sadly that is not always possible. There are several options available to couples which do not include court proceedings. These include: Solicitor Negotiation - where each party instructs a solicitor to enter into negotiations on their behalf in the hope of reaching a mutual agreement; Mediation - where an independent mediator holds a number of meetings with the couple jointly in the hope of assisting them to agree arrangements directly; Collaborative – where each party instructs a solicitor separately and the four of them meet to discuss matters directly in the hope of reaching an agreement; Court proceedings – a last resort if no other option allows the parties to reach agreement on all issues Abby Smith of Setfords Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting clients to reach a swift, amicable agreement but which best protects their needs now and in the future. Abby Smith has over 10 years experience in dealing with such issues and is an accredited specialist in family law. For any Family Law queries or information about Family Mediation please contact Abby Smith for a FREE initial telephone consultation. Thereafter meetings can be arranged at a time and venue convenient to you, with very competitive charging rates.

Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK. It affects both men and women but young women are more at risk. If you’ve had sex and not used a condom, you are at risk of having Chlamydia. If you are under 25 and sexually active, you could have a 1 in 5 chance of having Chlamydia. Untreated Chlamydia in women can cause pelvic infection which can lead to infertility (inability to get pregnant) in later life. If also increases the risk of having an ectopic pregnancy (outside the womb) which can be life threatening. In men, untreated Chlamydia can cause testicular pain and infertility. If you have Chlamydia, you may have no symptoms. You may be at risk of developing long term problems and

you will pass the infection on to sexual partners. Chlamydia can be treated with a course of antibiotics. We are offering self taken screening tests for Chlamydia for under 25 year olds as part of the national screening programme (swab for women, urine sample for men). If you would like more information or a kit please talk to one of the nurses. If you are over 25 years and have any concerns please talk to a nurse or GP.

Stanground Academy What a difference a sponsor can make… …from ‘Notice to improve’ to ‘Good’ in just four terms

Folksworth Preschool Folksworth Preschool has been busy making Easter bonnets and rabbits ready for Easter. Outside play has been so much fun with the sunshine and we have enjoyed finding different bugs and lots of wriggly worms.

Following an inspection that took place on 11 and 12 February 2014, Ofsted has judged the overall effectiveness of the Stanground Academy to be good. Inspectors scrutinised records and documentation, observed lessons and met with pupils and staff to get their views. The inspection is an independent assessment of the effectiveness of the Academy which includes: • the achievement of pupils; • the quality of teaching; • the behaviour and safety of pupils; and • the quality of leadership and management. The Academy was judged to be ‘good’ across these four areas and the lead inspector noted that the transformation in the Academy was nothing short of “miraculous”. The inspectors made several references to the strong leadership and governance which they believe are the reasons for the Academy’s success: “The Principal’s good leadership has, in a short space of time, created a positive environment in which to learn.” “Standards have risen due to the relentless actions of senior leaders to secure good behaviour and teaching.” “The academy sponsor and an advisory council of governors provide good support and challenge for senior leaders. They maintain a close check on the work of the academy.” When the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust (GDFT) opened the Stanground Academy in April 2012, it promised to significantly improve the ethos for learning, results and life chances of pupils when compared to those of the predecessor college. This report confirms that it is doing exactly what it said it would do and found that “Older students who transferred from the predecessor school did so with significant gaps

in their reading, writing and mathematical skills. In its first full year as an Academy, most of these gaps have been filled. Good teaching and support for students are increasingly enabling them to make good progress. The proportion of students attaining five GCSE A* to C grades including English and Mathematics is in line with the national average. This represents good progress.” Ged Rae, Principal, said: “The result of our recent Ofsted inspection is exceptional when we consider that the Academy has only been open for a little over four terms and that the predecessor Stanground College had faced a significant number of challenges. Our Academy has made rapid progress and the staff and pupils are rightfully proud of their achievements. Our relentless commitment to the highest standards of education is evident when you look at our examination results. In 2013, 62 per cent of pupils gained five or more GCSE passes (A*-C) including English and mathematics which represents a dramatic 24 per cent increase from the 39 per cent pass rate achieved in 2012.” Barry Day, Chief Executive of the GDFT, said “I am absolutely delighted with this inspection outcome which is a true reflection of how hard pupils and staff have worked throughout the year. I would also like to thank the parents who have been supportive in ensuring that their children fulfil their potential. The Academy’s brand new buildings opened in September 2013 following a £24 million pound investment by Peterborough City Council. The new high quality learning environment offers young people in Peterborough an excellent educational experience.”

We have taken a chance on the fabulous weather and begun planting our crops in the vegetable patches; hopefully we will be lucky and grow some nice treats for our snack. Folksworth Preschool is currently very full and buzzing with activities, so much so we have employed two new members of staff. If you are thinking of asking for a place for after Easter then please do it quickly to avoid disappointment. Our lovely committee were busy raising money for us last year and as a result we have been given a cash injection to enable us to buy some new toys, storage and a mat for the children. The children are very excited about choosing these. After the half term break we will be focussing on preparing to transition into big school, we have already been practicing our writing. We have also been learning some Makaton and I am pleased to say that the children have begun using it independently amongst themselves and peers and our reduced language works well with everyone.

Schools Holme Church of England School Holme Church of England School is proud of not only its academic standards but our sporting standards too. We strive to offer children a mix of sports to try for the first time via after school clubs, such as dodge ball, gymnastics, tag rugby and football, as well as competitive sports. One sport we are particularly excelling in at the moment is netball; where we are top of the league and rarely defeated! We are fortunate enough to have a parent, Mrs Starr, who is a trained netball coach, leading the team along with parent volunteers. Recently at a tournament in Stanground, both our A team and our B team did exceptionally well, taking the two top spots for most of the tournament. Holme Harriers (A) and Holme Hawks (B) won all the games in their groups with both going through to the semi final where Holme Harriers beat Southfields 1-0 securing them a place in the final where they beat Old Fletton 1-0. Our final positioning was first and third; I am incredibly proud of them all.

Holme Village Pre School The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit from the music teacher, Ryan Buxton, who worked with them in small groups to learn all about the guitar (six strings, body, etc.) and have a go too. They also played along with Ryan on the guitar using a variety of percussion instruments and moving them fast and slow. The session concluded at circle time with a fun sing-a-long with Ryan where the children could show what they had learnt. The children have also been experimenting with water and different solids this term, watching water run down guttering and sieving items such as pulses and lentils. This has been very enjoyable for them whilst using mathematical language to aid their development. Finally, we all joined in for World Book day, the staff and children dressed up in a range of characters and delighted in showing and sharing their favourite story books with each other. Reminder of our next fundraiser…Fun pub quiz on Friday 9th May 7.30pm at the Admiral Wells function room, £10 per team (maximum of 6 people) with different rounds to test everyone!

If you have just moved into the area or considering places for your Reception child, please do call the school and arrange to come and view our wonderful school. Mrs Allen (Headteacher)

Stilton C of E Primary School Children across the school have recently taken part in a Maths Investigation Day, with each class solving a range of Maths problems and puzzles. In the afternoon, we invited grown-ups into school to play Maths games. We have also recently had ‘Being a Detective Week’ in school. Schools Fourfields Following a recent extension to our school garden we have hosted a RHS garden workshop for local schools. In preparation for these workshops, members of our school community, including support staff, parents and community volunteers, gave up their time to provide vital maintenance to our polytunnel and planting beds ready for the growing year ahead. Meanwhile each class was invited to plant their potatoes and we will monitor the progress of these potato plants over the coming months. The class responsible for the largest potato will receive an award and have their potato included in the school lunchtime menu. To support this aspect of learning, the children in Year 1 visited the East of England showground to learn about the cycle of the life of a potato. Talking of cycles, the whole school – including staff and mums and dads, were invited to participate in the National Big Pedal Fortnight. Many of our families scootered or cycled to school in a bid to beat other schools for the amount of journeys on two wheels. Take a look at our website for pictures of this health promoting event and our scores compared with other schools. Meanwhile our cook is introducing many subtle changes to our menus; to reflect the use of more local suppliers, including our own garden, ensuring products are free from certain E Numbers and preservatives, that our eggs are not from caged hens and ensure meals are freshly prepared from scratch. It all smells delicious! Can you help? We are looking to host a Farmers’ Market in the summer....if any local businesses or food specialists would like to take part, please phone the school office. www.fourfields.cambs.sch.uk

Yaxley Infant School He delivered on time! The ‘Jolly Postman’ made a special guest appearance with many other characters from his book on World Book Day (6thMarch). Actually, it was the staff at Yaxley Infant School in disguise but don’t tell the children. A great time was had by all with a fun filled postal themed day. The children have continued with the whole school theme of Nursery Crimes and will all be dressing up on March 21st as their favourite nursery character. It will be a great day to celebrate all of the children’s hard work; learning and also very interesting to see which characters they choose! Our school is part of a cluster of schools called the A1 partnership; it is a network which brings many opportunities for shared working and extra curricular activities for all of the staff and children. One of the many activities we do together is the A1 Music festival; twelve schools take part and perform a concert at the Cresset in Peterborough. This year the theme is the seasons and our song is all about spring. Our choir has been working hard and I am sure they will steal the show! I’ll let you know.

Stretton Fourfields We’ve just enjoyed a magical week dressing up as ‘Pirates or Princesses’ with lots of themed activities for the children to enjoy whilst raising money for the children’s charity Crackerjacks. For us it’s also the time for parents with headstart children to meet their key workers to discuss their progress. Easter is rapidly approaching, to celebrate this we are having a ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ with Easter themed competitions, dancing and maybe even a visit from the Easter Bunny!! Term ends on Friday April 4th and returning on Tuesday April 22nd. If you are looking to book a place for your child please visit www.stretton-pre-school.co.uk for more details rnoon23@aol.com

This taught the children a variety of things including road safety, stranger danger, and of course what the different shops have to offer. We visited the fruit and vegetable shop where the children were able to choose fresh fruit for their snack. The highlight of this trip (according to the children) was visiting the pet shop to look at the parrots.

The artificial grass so eagerly needed has been installed allowing the children to enjoy outdoor play whatever the weather. No more muddy clothes!

Gardening Special Spread a little beauty round your garden with baskets and containers One of the easiest ways to incorporate colour and balance to your home and garden is to invest in hanging baskets and planting containers.

Creating your perfect garden

The perfect patio The patio is one of the areas in the garden that stands out and gets used the most, so it’s worth putting in a little time and effort to make it as pretty and productive as possible.

Whether you live in a small townhouse or a country cottage, anyone can try these simple, highly enjoyable methods of gardening, and it only takes around 20 minutes to plant up a container or basket.

There are many great tips and tricks you can do with your patio to make it stand out as a place full of flowers and become a welcoming place to relax on those lovely summer days.

When the time comes to select your plants, it is worth carefully considering the flowering plants you choose. Select colours that work well together and plants that flower reliably.

Vibrant pots make all the difference to a patio or doorstep, adding colour and interest for the entire summer.

Lots of plants grow well in containers and hanging baskets. Some great summer plants to include are: lobelia, fuchsias, pansies, petunias, sweet-peas and snapdragon and ivy. Trailing plants are also an excellent addition to any hanging-basket. Hanging-baskets really are very easy to create, and can be fixed to most walls and exterior buildings. Pots, troughs, ½ barrels and window boxes can come in a range of shapes and sizes, making them ideal for any smaller space you think needs spruced up. With such a range of containers, you are likely to find one that will fit you needs perfectly. The sizes of plants should also be considered – you don’t want a tiny plant in a huge pot, or a large plant in a pot too small, this will lead to it being re-potted often.

Colour hit

Create impact, and a big splash of colour, by grouping several pots together – this looks far more impressive than a single container dotted here and there. Fill pots with summer bedding plants such as geramiums, petunia and busy Lizzies which also develop and flower quickly. Think vertical Disguise ugly walls and fences with clever plant solutions. Consider a ‘green wall’ approach, which uses year-round herbaceous plants for a continuous display, or cover the space with lots of hanging baskets filled with colourful summer bedding. Either will bring about a transformation. Sitting comfortably Something to sit on is the most important part of a patio, so you need to get it just right. Decide whether you want a table and chairs for dining, or comfy sofas or loungers for replacing, then consider the style.

Gardening Special

Care of your April garden After recent rain, it’s good to see some dry weather, but, of course, it is the month of April showers! Do not be deceived into thinking that your plants do not need watering. Look out for new seed beds, and dry, windy spots that are vulnerable to evaporation. However, the sun will be shining through and bringing longer days and warmer spells, so be sure to keep your greenhouse ventilated to prevent scorching. Late frosts can still occur so if this is forecast, cover up vulnerable plants. Make sure you keep on top of the many tasks this month, including: • Sowing new lawns or repairing bare patches • Feeding hungry shrubs and roses • Sowing hardy annuals and herb seeds • Protecting fruit blossom from late frosts • Keeping weeds under control • Increasing the water given to houseplants Now is the best time to apply weed and moss killer to lawns. Once this has been applied, you can lightly rake off the debris with a metal grass rake. Mow the lawn as it grows, repairing any humps and bumps by peeling off the top layer and lowering the soil. Apply a thin layer of good top soil or compost to low areas and spread a little seed. This will make mowing easier and eliminate scalping. Turfing is ideal at this time of year. Once it has been prepared and laid you can let the showers do the hard work. Turfing can be laid all year but has various disadvantages depending on the time of the year. Tree work will continue throughout spring. Watch out for nesting birds and ensure that work carried out do not interfere with them. Check for any storm damage over the windy months that you may not have noticed and removed dead wood or damaged limbs before new growth adds weight to them.

Papworth Trust

How does your garden grow? Big or small, charity Papworth Trust hopes gardeners will be ‘open’ to summer fundraising bid. “How many kinds of sweet flowers grow in an English country garden?” A line from an old folk song, but also a question people across the region just may find the answer to this summer. Charity Papworth Trust is looking for people in the community to open their gardens in aid of its work supporting disabled people. Heart’s ease and phlox, meadowsweet and lady smocks, lupin or tall hollyhocks, to echo the words of the song. However your garden grows, the Trust would like to hear from you. Papworth Trust Community Fundraiser Andrea Chupacova said: “We are looking for enthusiastic gardeners who are willing to open their gardens this summer and help us to raise vital funds. It’s a great way to celebrate the beauty of English country gardens – whether big or small – and support our work with disabled people and their families at the same time.” If you would like to open your garden on behalf of Papworth Trust any time between May and the end of August 2014, then contact the Papworth Fundraising Team on 01480 357206. The team will be able to help you with marketing, publicity and ideas to raise funds such as raffles and teas.

Gardening Special “Gardening is a way of showing that you believe in tomorrow”

Your April Garden

Please do not forget to water and feed the birds.

Let us all hope for a sunny April which will allow us to sow new lawns and repair established ones. For a good finished lawn, preparation is everything. As we have had so much rain lawns will require feeding with high nitrogen fertiliser that will replace the nutrient that has been lost. Prune forsythia and winter jasmine soon after flowering, deadhead daffodils, tulips and pansies. In the vegetable garden, continue to plant out seed potatoes and when buying these, ensure that you are buying “certified seed” do not just go and buy the cheapest. Keep an eye on the weather forecast for frost and cover with fleece if a frost is imminent. Should you be unlucky and your potatoes do get frosted you can try and save them by spraying the tops with water before the sun gets on them. I have known this to work. In the greenhouse you can keep frost out, sow tomatoes ensuring that they have plenty of light. Plant up new shrubs, conifers, perennials and alpines and watch out for aphids (greenfly and blackfly) as we have not had a lot of cold weather to inhibit them.

We get asked a great deal this time of year about compost - which is the best - peat based or peat free? My answer to this is that I have tried most peat free compost on the market and to date has found that most are inferior to peat based compost. Many gardeners like me hate all the things that you find in the peat free compost such as lumps of wood, straw bits etc. I also find the consistency in both quality and performance quite poor whilst a good peat based compost such as that produced by Clover of Ireland takes some beating and helps the gardener to be a success, so always look out for the best quality brands and remember you only get what you pay for! The nutrient level in compost such as multipurpose lasts about three to five weeks dependent upon the amount of water or rain as this leaches the nutrients out and therefore requires supplementary feeding. I would like to point out that this is my own personal opinion based on my personal experience but welcomes the day when good peat free compost is available. Having visited the peat bogs over the years, I have always found that once the peat is harvested, the bogs are restored to the benefit of a wider variety of birds and wildlife.

One other question that is often asked is why do my bedding plants take a long time to grow once planted? The answer to this question is more often due to the large growers who supply the retail outlets, spraying the plants with a growth regulator which although does benefit the plant in some ways, can result in the plant standing still for a long period of time particularly if sprayed too much. Until the growth regulator has worn off the plants will stand still. The reason for spraying the plants is to hold the plant back in order to give the retailer longer to sell the plant, reducing the work in keeping them looking good. It is claimed that it does make the plant branch out. Personally, I do not like the use of growth regulators and prefer to go along with the growers that do not use these growth regulators but a method called “Dif” which is basically controlling the growth naturally without causing any form of check. This is done by the “dif” method (difference) in temperatures. When buying plants, particularly bedding and basket plants always ask your supplier if controlled release fertilisers have been used in the compost as this will ensure a good start and finish to your plants. And one for the children.... Q. Why do potatoes make good detectives? A. Because they keep their eyes peeled!”

FASD Ball raises over £5000 for charity by Joanne Castle

I was completely overwhelmed on Saturday, the evening of the FASD Spring Ball. On behalf of everyone at the Trust I just want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all who came and supported the event.

We had an amazing night complete with casino, raffle and an auction. There was not a clear space on the dance floor, thanks to the fabulous live music by Headliners. Even my parents 83 and 72 were up dancing. The two main things to come out of this night was to raise the awareness of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and raise

funds to help continue the work that FASD trust do. Both of these have been achieved. More and more people are beginning to understand the effects which can be caused by drinking alcohol during pregnancy. There were lots of discussions and questions being asked. To date the evening has raised over £5000! There are still monies to come in so this figure will rise.

Lastly, I want to thank our sponsors who helped make this evening special; Total Sports, Dsquare Design and Yaxley Carpets. The UK’s love affair with Indian cuisine shows no signs of fading. Few can resist a spicy curry, comforting dhal, or fragrant chutney. However, how many of us can actually cook an authentic curry? The UK’s love affair with Indian cuisine shows no signs of fading. Few can resist a spicy curry, comforting dhal, or fragrant chutney. However, how many of us can actually cook an authentic curry? I would class myself as a relatively good cook, yet I wanted to learn how to cook the perfect curry. So, my stepfather, my partner and I headed off to Bollywood Tiger, in Yaxley. We arrived at 10am on Sunday morning, just the 3 of us (classes are limited to 8 people) and, after adorning ourselves with the provided aprons and chefs’ hats, we were invited into the kitchen, which was very well equipped and spotless. Our teacher, Bollywood Tiger restaurant owner, Tahir, set up our stations, and we started by chopping up all the fresh ingredients, such as onions, pepper, ginger etc. After all these years I actually learnt how to cut an onion correctly! Tahir is very passionate about his food, his gran has taught him well. He taught us that all Indian dishes need something salty, tangy, and spicy (or some kind of heat) within it. This is something I came to understand more fully after making the dishes. Tahir provided hands

on training, while making me feel at ease. We talked about the dishes we all liked and disliked and, luckily for us, we all cooked a dish each, so it suited all of our different taste buds. I have always been intimidated by Indian food cooking. It has always seemed so complicated and time consuming. Tahir broke each recipe down to very easy and manageable steps. This is the perfect class for an introduction into the diversity of Indian curries, spices, vegetable dishes and breads on offer within Indian communities. The best part of the cookery class is that you get to eat what you have made, so we all sat down with Tahir and ate the delights we had cooked, and during the meal,Tahir explained more about cookery and gave some great additional tips. I do struggle to find certain ingredients for Indian cooking, so it’s good to hear that you can order online at the www.herbsandspice.biz You can also find more about the different classes that are available. So, if you love Indian food, you should give these classes a try, or maybe if the class is not for you, book in for the Sunday Buffet!

To gym or not to gym? Believe it or not, I am now into my 6th week at Vivacity Premier Fitness, and I am shocked with myself, that I am now enjoying it! I never thought I would hear myself say this, but I love spinning (Studio Cycling).

My personal trainer sessions with the wonderful Mo (through gritted teeth as I won’t tell you what I call him when I have my sessions with him!) are going really well. He is working very hard on my core and believe me it’s hard to work on, let alone find it, but Mo has me doing some wonderful stuff, which once I put my mind to it, I can do. I just have to believe in it and believe Mo is not just doing it for the fun of it.

by ‘the anonymous gym buddy’.

The Vivacity Premier Fitness Gym is a really good gym; it’s taken me a few weeks to realise it, (hated anything to do with exercise let alone walk into a gym), but the staff are wonderful; from the reception staff who meet and greet you,

to all the instructors that run the classes. Everyone is there for one thing, to make it a comfortable experience. So am I noticing a difference? Absolutely! I feel I have more energy, am sleeping better, have more ‘get up and go’, and I have not been having any boozy nights out (well apart from one). So all in all, I am looking after myself and my body. My partner has also noticed a difference in me. In fact he is considering joining me, but time will tell. As I have explained it doesn’t happen by magic! Keeping it in the family, my mum is also enjoying the facilities; including yoga, pilates, body balance

and swimming. She really appreciates being left to take part with sensitive input from the instructors, but no feeling of having to achieve things she is not yet comfortable with – some feat for my mum to not be critical! She also laughs that I am constantly moaning about what I’m doing, but then admitting what fun it is and how much I am getting out of it – mums can sometimes be very perceptive! Next month’s update will be the big test - I will be having the fitness test I had when I started, plus a weigh in and measurements, so I am hoping all this hard work has paid off. Whatever happens, it is turning out to be a great experience.

If you fancy joining me and some wonderful gym buddies check out vivacity-peterborough.com/premierfitness or call 01733 864000.

Zumba for the kids

Coming to Hampton Leisure Centre for the first time, there are classes for Kids Zumba, Jnr Zumba Kids & Zumba Teenagers. Finally, up to the minute exercise classes for our children is being offered by Zumba instructor Sonja Allen, who lives in Hampton and recognised the need for some fun after school clubs. The classes will be launching on Tuesday April 22nd at the Dance Studio at Hampton Leisure Centre, Clayburn Road. Hampton will have the first ever Zumba Teenagers class in the county. Sonja approached Zumba Head Office to ask why there wasn’t a programme for the teenagers. She asked permission to launch her very own class aimed at the 12-15 year olds. I asked Sonja, why the age was restricted to under 15 years, and she explained that once they reach the age of 16, young people are able to attend a main stream Zumba class on their own.

Places are going very fast so get booked and register now!

Flea facts

Within its first 24 hours on your pet, a flea will have mated and started to lay eggs (40-50 a day), infesting your entire home.

95% of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in beds, rugs, carpets and sofas NOT on your pet

How does my pet get fleas? Contrary to popular belief, most flea infestations are NOT acquired from other pets. Fleas can jump onto your pet from any contaminated environment; in public parks, wooded areas, on beaches or even in your own garden. Why protect against fleas? Fleas can make you and your pet miserable and can pose a serious threat to your pet’s health. Fleas cause severe discomfort causing the animal to scratch, chew and bite themselves, potentially causing harm in the process. They can also cause serious skin conditions, anaemia and transmit tapeworm infection. How do I protect against fleas?

y up Fleas can la in gs g to 1,500 e m ti a life e

The best way to deal with fleas is to prevent them living on your pet in the first place. Use monthly flea products that kill adult fleas and prevent the development of their young. The most effective options are a spot-on treatment to the back of your pet’s neck, or a palatable tablet (this is suitable for those pets who like to swim or are groomed regularly). The most effective products are available from your Veterinary Surgeon.

Once fleas have taken hold, it can take 3 months to get rid of an infestatio n.

Flea larva e light, so th don’t like ey move away from it, d eep into carpets, cracks in flooring o r any nook or c ranny.

Just one flea can become 1,000 in only 21 days

What do I do if my pet gets fleas? Stage 1: Treat ALL your pets with a fast-acting flea product. Stage 2: Treat your environment. Use a suitable insecticide in the house and hot wash all pet’s bedding and blankets. Please remember that it can take time to eliminate a flea burden. If you’re worried about how to prevent fleas or how to deal with an infestation, come along to us for a FREE nurse flea consultation.

BLOG Who is the Yaxley Gazette Blogger? Drew Pontikis has been a Yaxley resident for the past 6 years, and has two young sons to keep him busy. He works as an Analyst in Orton Southgate, but dreams of becoming a writer.

Something quite remarkable happened to me recently. For reasons I won’t elaborate on, I found myself driving along London Road towards Norman Cross at half past three in the morning. Pitch black, freezing cold. And do you know what happened? I had to slam on the brakes as there, bang in the middle of the road in full lycrabased glory, was a cyclist. At half past three in the morning.

Cycling etiquette

Before I offend the Yaxley Riders, I should point out that I like cycling. I like mountain biking, I quite enjoy watching road racing, I used to cycle to work; I’m even part of the club as I’ve been knocked off and injured before. On the whole, I have nothing against cycling. What I do have a problem with however, are two particular types of cyclist. Number one, those who cycle bang in the middle of the road, thus blocking traffic. Don’t do that. You are not one of the Yaxley Riders who go tearing along at 50 miles an hour overtaking old ladies in Nissan Micras; you are holding everybody up. Imagine you were cycling along and all of a sudden, looming up in front of you was a middle aged man in pink spandex on a micro scooter, causing you to either break suddenly or swerve into on-coming traffic. Annoying? Yes? That’s you that is. Number two are those who cycle with headphones on and no helmet. Frankly anyone who cycles without a helmet deserves to have it removed from them and therefore be forced to walk home from wherever they are at the time. But headphones? Seriously? You are actually saying “Yes I could be more aware of my surroundings, in particular those big metal things with angry people inside them and therefore less likely to be knocked off and injured, but I don’t want to?” This is literally the most stupid thing I have ever heard of. I don’t drive with one eye closed just to save wear and tear, why on earth would you wear headphones? Cyclists – we love you. But please remember, life is precious – show as much care and concern for your well-being as the rest of us have to.

Small Business Bookkeeping & When I took my first accounts role allocating customer payment for a large telecoms company, I didn’t expect it to lead to running my own business! However, I was introduced to (and fell in love with) credit control, an often-hated task, and discovered that good credit control actually builds and strengthens relationships. As I moved to smaller companies, my roles expanded as I took on extra responsibilities, so I decided to study accounting. Once qualified (AAT Level 3 Diploma) I chose a company name, designed a logo, finally taking the plunge and leaving my old job for Chromium Bookkeeping, and have not looked back since! Before printing business cards, I got a professional to improve the logo design, and I am so glad I did – much less expensive than expected and far better than my own attempt. This taught me a valuable business lesson – saving money by doing something myself isn’t always wise. The hours spent designing my own logo showed me the value of getting it done professionally, and that became the focus of Chromium Bookkeeping – helping businesses owners by taking care of their books, tax/VAT returns, payroll (and credit control!) to free up time for customers and family. Question: How do I know if I qualify for the full basic state pension when I retire? Answer: To qualify for a full basic state pension, currently £113.10 a week (2014-2015), you require 30 years full National Insurance contributions rising to 35 years after 2016. If you have gaps in your record, you can pay Class 3 voluntary National Insurance (NI) contributions. You can obtain a pension forecast from the GOV.UK website where you can also find an estimate of your actual state pension retirement date. News: HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have announced help to taxpayers whose businesses have been affected by the recent floods, such as: • Agree instalment arrangements where taxpayers are unable to pay as a result of the floods; • Agree a practical approach when individuals and businesses have lost vital records to the floods; • Suspend debt collection proceedings for those affected by the floods; • Cancel penalties when the taxpayer has missed statutory deadlines. The HMRC flood helpline number is 0800 904 7900. By the time this goes to print, the Chancellor would have given his fifth budget on 19 March 2014 and the content will be available on our website where you can also sign up for our email newsletters including the budget.

APRIL 2014

Aries March 21-April 20

By Katie Lancashire, Clairvoyant and Astrologer

No one can deny you are trying your very best right now and are giving your all, however, who or what is standing in the way of your happiness, and why do you continue to make excuses for them or put up with less than you deserve? Open your eyes this month and think outside of your comfort zone - what can you do to get your zest back?

Taurus

April 21-May21

Gemini

May 22-June 22

Determination runs through you like blood. you have come such a long way these past few years and finally your goal is in sight. Before you can actually reach it and hold it, you have to help someone on their way. You are on the right path and your time will come, but please show some compassion and support to those around you - remember, you were that person once. You love to be in control of your life, to know exactly what direction you are heading in. However, despite your best efforts to firm up some big plans, you still feel like you are adrift. Remember, what is meant for us does not pass us by. Is your current situation so bad that you have to run away from it?

Cancer

June 23-July 23

Your shell is strong and sturdy, but beneath that tough exterior you have been through a rough and demanding ordeal recently, that has at times felt relentless. Take heart, over the course of the next few weeks you will begin to make positive progress and a light at the end of the tunnel, the huge weight is about to be lifted from your shoulders.

Surprise changes in working life will give you a much needed confidence boost, for far too long you have held back for fear of the unknown, this month embrace new opportunities and allow yourself to think outside of the box. Watch out for injury that could set you back somewhat, take note of warning signs.

Aquarius January 21-February 19

You should be in no doubt as to someone’s feelings for you, whether you are being chased by an admirer or pursued by a potential colleague, you have all the qualities they are seeking, enjoy being the object of desire. Discussions regarding home life need careful consideration, don’t rush into anything.

Pisces February 20-March 20

You have seen someone’s very true and raw colours recently and now you must decide how you want a certain situation or friendship to pan out, you cannot ‘un-know’ things but you can choose your next move, do you really want to be associated with such tricky people? Pay close attention to legal papers and read everything before you sign.

If it is your birthday this month....

You are feeling more optimistic and happy than you have done for a very long time, don’t think that this is just a flash in the pan moment, this feel good factor is here to stay. For far too long you have lived in a shadow and have always aimed to please others, forget them, this is about your life and your happiness, aim high now, you can get what you so dearly want.
