In this issue

Welcome back! Not wanting to blow our own trumpet, but the Term Times team are proud to reach our 150th issue. Yes, way back in 1993 Term Times was launched and distributed to parents and children for the first time. What a different world it was then when Take That appeared at Truckfest, and Geoff Capes told us all about his pets! I hope you enjoy a look back at the collection of older covers in this issue from some of the many thousands of magazines read by families over the years and the numerous competition prizes awarded to our readers. Here at Term Times, we recognize that families have had it tough over recent months. Rising costs, illness with covid and of course the mental health effects of the pandemic on children and parents alike. Well, that is the bad news, the good news is that Easter is approaching, and spring is in the air. Warmer weather also normally greets this longer holiday and nature starts to awaken after the winter period. It also heralds the start of the age-old tradition of the Easter egg hunt! Like most families we have hunted many chocolate eggs up and down the country. Hidden word or image clues, Cadburys sponsored egg hunts at National Trust properties, or our own personal ones dotted around the nooks and crannies of the family home – all are great fun. Plus, throw in a day out experience with new spring lambs and what better time is there to get out with the family? In this issue destinations for younger children have been reviewed whilst we have also included a feature about local adrenaline/activity-based leisure outlets for older children. Plus, we have a range of fabulous books to give away that span all age groups. Wishing you a happy Easter and an enjoyable term ahead. PS. If your family is a proud owner of a pet pooch send us your photograph of him or her, including names of all pictured.

Drama and Singing Classes Little Voices provides weekly drama and singing lessons to school aged children. We spoke to Principal, Julie Armstrong about how lessons can benefit their wellbeing.

First delivered in Easter 2021, the successful HAF programme is back this year for the Easter holidays. Eligible children can access four, four-hour sessions with a provider that sounds right for you and your child, and they will support you in booking a place.

She told us, ‘Children have had so much to deal with over the past two years and their mental health has really suffered. We recently supported Children’s Mental Health Week and were shocked to discover that one in six children now have a diagnosable mental health condition!’ The friendly lessons run by Little Voices can help give children that much needed boost in confidence. Julie added, ‘We always teach in very small groups, so there’s no getting lost at the back or feeling invisible. Our lessons are jam-packed with fun and learning, in a safe, supportive space, where children can express their creativity and just be themselves. We simply help them to be the best that they can be - and happy, relaxed children grow confidence every week.’ For more details visit: www.littlevoices.org.uk/location/peterborough 6

If your child is eligible for benefit related free school meals and would like to attend, just click the QR code for the local authority in which you live and you will find further details on accessing the programme. Each child can only be funded at one provider so please do not book at more than one or the place may be lost or charged for. The sessions are fully funded by the Department for Education (DfE). Enquiries should be sent to haf@peterborough.gov.uk or haf@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Save our Farm A fundraising campaign’s been launched to save a much-loved city farm. New Ark Play Association in Peterborough has been providing unique support for local youngsters for over forty years but council funding cutbacks and the effect of the pandemic has left them dangerously short of funds. This city farm, eco centre and adventure playground could face closure. This would mean a loss of vital preschool and after school care services, facilities for children who experience social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties, unemployed staff and multiple animals that will need rehoming. They are appealing to local people and businesses to step in and donate through www.gofundme.com/save-new-ark. If you think you can help you can also email SaveNewArk@yahoo.com

Rutland Discovered

Rutland is a haven for families looking for a fun day out and with multi-generational holidays on the rise, age is never an issue in a county where Multum in Parvo (Much in Little) is the motto. From activities such as Aquapark Rutland at Rutland Water in the summer, cycling, SUPing (stand up paddle boarding) and even open water swimming for older children to The Rutland Zoo, soft play and role play centres for younger children, it is impossible to be bored. The number of accessible local walks, woodlands and playgrounds will fill your calendar in no time if you are sticking to a budget. As the mum of a very active and outdoorsy three-year-old, our year-round go-to place for a few hours of fun is Barnsdale Gardens, or the “cake gardens” as they are lovingly referred to in our house. We’re annual pass holders and I know that we can visit the gardens as a family or even take Great-Granny for a couple of hours and it is something that will interest all generations. With easy access off Exton Avenue and plenty of parking, including toddler and disabled spaces, the gardens are open 363 days a year and I know that each time we go, there will be something new to look at. It is constantly changing.

Made up of 38 individually designed gardens, including the children’s garden with fairy toadstools and a sleeping dragon under the bridge, the seasonality of the flowers and plants growing in each nook and cranny keeps us all busy and happily chatting as we wander around, usually taking a different route each time. In spring we like to look at all the new life growing in the gardens, in summer when it’s in full bloom the gardens are full of colour and wildlife and in autumn, the beautiful produce grown in the allotment garden and orchard gives us plenty of food for thought. Even in winter, when there’s not as much colour, the gardens are fun to explore, with hidden paths and ponds that are often tucked away behind foliage in the warmer months. The reason why we call it the “cake gardens” is because the lovely tearoom extends outside in summer, meaning we can go and enjoy lunch or a slice of cake tucked away in a cosy sanctuary where tame birds peck around our feet for crumbs. The tea rooms are open all year as well and you don’t need to pay admission to visit,

so it’s always a great option for a lovely lunch on a rainy day. We recently tried the afternoon tea and it was absolutely delicious. If you are looking for a more substantial or evening meal though, as the County of Good Taste, Rutland has plenty of pubs with great children’s menus. The Grainstore Brewery in Oakham has recently rewritten its menu with small plates and a wider choice for children. If you’re planning on cycling around Rutland Water and stopping for lunch, The Horse and Jockey at Manton also has a separate children’s menu and with the roof terrace due to open this spring, we’re looking forward to spending a few summer evenings there as a family. Another great option for multi-generation families is Welland Vale Garden Centre in Uppingham. The garden centre and gift shop are fantastic and the on-site café even has a small soft play area for toddlers – perfect for a midweek treat. Create your own day-trippers itinerary at www.discover-rutland.co.uk Megan Allen is a freelance journalist and PR consultant, born and raised in rural Rutland.

Harper Collins Author: Jennifer Killick Ages: 9+ RRP: £7.99

For fans of scary stories we have five copies of the fabulous new fright fest Dread Wood to give away. A gang of classmates think a weekend detention is the worst thing ever, but it gets decidedly worse as their forced trip to school on a Saturday takes a seriously scary turn. What has dragged their teacher underground? Why do the creepy caretakers keep humming the tune to Itsy Bitsy Spider? And what horrors lurk in the shadows, getting stronger and meaner every minute? Cut off from help and in danger each time they touch the ground, the gang’s only hope is to work together. But it’s no coincidence that they're all there on detention. Someone has been watching, plotting and is out for revenge. The brand-new series from Jennifer Killick is funny and exciting with just the right amount of scares. Already well known for Crater Lake, the Alex Sparrow series, and middle-grade sci-fi adventure Mo, Lottie and the Junkers, Jennifer is a regular at schools and festivals. Her books have been selected three times for The Reading Agency's Summer Reading Challenge. To enter the competition, head to page 3. Closing date 17 April.

celebrates 150TH ISSUE

Do you remember 1993? It seems a long time ago now since Buckingham Palace opened for the first time to the public, the Grand National was announced void after a false start and Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves was re-released in cinemas. Our children were settling down to watch favourites such as Art Attack, Brum, Chuckle Vision and still running - Thomas the Tank Engine, but Easter 1993 also saw the publication of the first ever issue of Term Times magazine. As you can see in this look back at some of the front covers, things have changed quite a bit, but teachers, parents and advertisers say Term Times remains a mustread publication as we proudly celebrate our 150th issue.

‘The Term Times magazine has been invaluable for informing parents/carers about local events and groups. The students enjoy browsing through the pages too, looking to see if they know anyone in the pictures.’ Sharon, teacher at NeneGate School

‘Term Times have given Fenland First Aid the perfect medium to reach our target audience. We congratulate Term Times on their 150th edition.’

Julie, Little Voices Peterborough

‘2020 had been a tough year for everyone. Winning this competition because of nominations from the parents in my year group, was such a boost. The nominations alone meant the world to me. The tree, wow it was beautiful, and made our Christmas special, despite everything else that was going on. Thanks again Term Times, you made our Christmas!' Darren White, Winner of the Nunton Farms Christmas tree in 2020

‘Our children and their families love to read Term Times. It gives them lots of ideas for activities and days out, a real window on life in schools across their region and plenty of entertainment. Congratulations to the Term Times team on your 150th issue and we're looking forward to many more to come at Brington.’ Mark Farrell headteacher, Brington C of E Primary School

Deborah from Fenland First Aid Services Ltd

'We have advertised with Term Times for many years, as the magazine goes directly to our target market, school aged children and families. Parents often say that this is where they first heard of us, and we have had many new pupils joining us as a direct result of these adverts. Perfect for any family focused business, Term Times is always a pleasure to deal with and makes it easy to boost your marketing in one simple step.'

CROMWELL MUSEUM PROMOTION

Learning comes to life at Cromwell Museum Pupils from Barnack Primary School had a fascinating trip back in time when they visited the Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon. They won the trip in the October competition and had a wonderful day out. It was all thanks to Harry who entered his class into the competition, and he wasn’t disappointed – ‘We got to dress up as musketeers, pikemen and cavalry men and it was very exciting!’ The Cromwell Museum is home to the best collection of items relating to the life and times of Oliver Cromwell on public display anywhere in the world. Harry and his friends had a fantastic morning spending half of their time in the museum looking at artefacts from Oliver Cromwell's life and even got to see the huge scale model of the Naseby ship, a special exhibition about the 17th century English Navy. They then went to the Town Hall to meet some civil war soldiers, where they learnt why the war started and all about the different weapons the soldiers used. The youngsters were shown how muskets worked and had plenty of fun when they finally got to dress up as civil war soldiers. Teacher Lauren Earth said it was the perfect prize – ‘The staff at the museum were really enthusiastic and knowledgeable - thank you for a lovely experience!’ If you would like to visit the Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon you can find out more about their special events and class visits on their website www.cromwellmuseum.org or call 01480 708 008

KIP MCGRATH PROMOTION

11+ Advice and Guidance This time of year, many parents ask for advice about 11+ tuition and/or entrance exams for secondary schools in the local area. There is advice out there, but some of it is very generic and not specific to an area. We are always happy to speak with parents about the help we can offer and which information they can seek via school websites.

What is the 11+ exam? The 11+ exam is a test taken in Year 6 that is used to ’select’ children for admission to some state secondary schools at age 11. It is a competitive exam and used to select the top performing students. Passing it does not guarantee a place at that school, though students must pass to apply.

Many private schools use the common entrance exam, which is very similar to the 11+ but may be used at 11 or 13. They may also provide scholarships that are often offered to the highest performing students.

Which local schools use the 11+? Lincolnshire uses 11+ exams to select students for all of their grammar schools. The closest grammar schools to Peterborough are Bourne Grammar and Spalding High (girls) and Spalding Grammar (boys). The Lincolnshire schools' test usually only covers reasoning skills. In Peterborough the 11+ exam is used by The King’s School. Gaining a place at King’s through sitting the 11+ exam is highly competitive as only 12 places are normally awarded. The King’s School often uses tests in English, maths and reasoning.

What do we do at Kip McGrath? The 11+ exam consists of 4 parts: Maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Not all four parts are used by every school; they are free to choose which elements they wish to assess.

We are experienced in tutoring children for 11+ and Common Entrance exams. Many of our students have successfully gained places at Lincolnshire Grammar Schools, The King’s School

and The Peterborough School. We tailor our tuition to fit the needs of the student as well as ensuring we cover the academic requirements of the exam. We also give our students the opportunity to sit mock exams so that they can learn exam techniques and time management.

Tips for helping your children at home  Encourage your child to read books - this helps widen their vocabulary and improves spelling.  Take your child to visit Secondary Schools well in advance - this helps with their motivation.  Don’t start too soon or they will get bored. Six months seems a very long time to 10-year-olds.  Buy the 11+ books (there are plenty to choose from) and do a little bit every day. Start with easy books for younger children and build up to the harder questions.  Encourage thinking skills by talking through the questions, offer explanations to tricky questions by talking out loud as you think.  Concentrate on the basics of maths and English.
