Welcome to our wonderful Christmas issue… In this edition of Term Times magazine, we’ll be providing loads of ideas for family winter fun from great places to visit, eat and shop to seasonal events that will get you all in the Christmas spirit. We’ve several pantomime tickets and a superb selection of books waiting to be won, so be sure to seek them out scattered through the issue. While most of us look forward to plenty of presents and warm family welcomes over the holiday season, not everyone has this privilege. Our primary schools teach the importance of giving, of helping others and being community-focused from a young age, which is why we’ve included ideas for ways you can support your school and in turn extend your child’s education. We’ve also gathered a bunch of ideas from parents for family traditions that help encourage the art of giving, specifically over the Christmas period. If your family, school or child has gone the extra mile to help someone, let us know as we would love to share these stories with our readers. Learning the joy of giving, without the expectation of receiving, is an important life skill but equally learning how to receive with genuine gratitude is a common courtesy all parents want to instil in their little ones. Saying thank you is simple yet meaningful, so we explore why writing a thank-you card in the days of email and text should be a tradition worth preserving. So, without further ado and a swish of our festive wand, we wish all readers, schools, advertisers and friends a relaxing and thoughtful winter holiday. To everyone, merry Christmas and a fabulous new year.

Give food Often churches and charities collect food for the homeless so throw some extra tins and mince pies in the trolley.

Piles of presents, mounds of food and tasty treats – it’s easy to enjoy the gluttonous festive spirit but how can we strike a balance with our children to teach them it’s as much about giving as it is receiving? When we talk about ways to recapture the magic of Christmas for our children, to bring back the excitement and festive feelings that we experienced, most parents head to re-establishing old family traditions. For many it’s writing letters to Santa, giving lots of gifts, baking festive treats or decorating the tree. For those who embrace the religious aspects of Christmas, it may be to attend Christmas Eve mass, a carol or a Christingle service. We all have our little rituals to make the season special, help us relive our childhood and overfill our children with joy, but how many of us dedicate time to helping our children discover the true magic of Christmas is in giving? We spoke to three Cambridgeshire-based parents about the ways that

they instil charitable giving in their children…

Operation Christmas Child “Since my boys were toddlers we’ve always done the Samaritan’s shoebox appeal. The boys pick the contents, decorate the box and send it on its way. We talk about why we’re doing it and what we think the child who gets it is like.” Bethany Wilkinson, mum to three-year-old Tom and six-year-old Ben.

Picking out gifts “When my kids were too young for pocket money, we used to go shopping and they’d pick what they thought the receiver would like. As they’ve got older, we encourage them to save a portion of their pocket money to buy small gifts or, even

better, to make them. We also bake cookies for neighbours and the postman.” Shelley Tomas, mum to eight-year-old Fliss and 12-year-old Flynn.

Little acts of kindness “Throughout December, we challenge each other to do more acts of kindness. It’s usually little things such as opening doors for people, buying a meal for a homeless person, giving someone a compliment or money to charity – but the hope is that by putting a focus on kindness over the Christmas season it will mean he’s more aware of his actions throughout the year too.” Duncan James, dad to nine-year-old Aiden.

Ways to get involved

The options to make a difference are endless, so what are you waiting for?

in your child’s school

Kate Chapman discusses how parents can enhance their child’s education by actively supporting their school. Parents, family and carers are undoubtedly the biggest influences in a child’s life. Research shows that when these people get involved in school life their children perform better and achieve more.

Become a governor

There are a lot of different ways you can support your children by volunteering at their school or nursery – it’s also a great way of showing them that their education is important to you. Each school has its own opportunities for involvement; the best way to find out how you can help is by arranging a chat with your child’s teacher or someone else on the school’s management team. Meanwhile, here are a few ideas you might like to consider:

Join the PTA (Parent Teacher Association)

The PTA is a group of volunteers who organise fundraising events and activities in aid of the school. From summer fetes and bingo to race nights and coffee mornings there are lots of ways to get involved and help raise valuable funds, which can then be used to buy extra items the school needs as well as treats for pupils. It’s also a great way of getting to know other parents and families in the school community.

12

Run an after-school club

Volunteer at an event If you don’t have the time to become a fully-fledged member of the PTA, offer your services to help out at various one-off events by manning a stall, collecting sponsors and raffle prizes or selling drinks and snacks.

Chaperone a school trip Many school excursions wouldn’t be able to go ahead without the support of extra adult volunteers. So, why not give up some time to enjoy a day out with pupils?

If you have a particular strength or skill such as cooking, sewing or football coaching, share it by offering your services to run an after-school club. It’s a great way of helping and encouraging youngsters to try something new, which they otherwise might not have been able to have a go at.

Be a big help with little jobs You could always offer to help out behind the scenes by washing team kits, cleaning out the school pond, painting a shed or helping to make costumes, scenery or props for a school production. Any help would surely be appreciated.

www.termtimes.ltd.uk

This is a more formal role where, once elected, you will help provide strategic leadership and accountability within the school. As well as appointing the headteacher, governors also hold the main responsibility for school finance.

Listen to pupils read Reading is an important lifelong skill and most primary schools require adult volunteers to listen to pupils read in order to help them progress.

Join in with career’s events Schools like having visitors in to chat to pupils about different employment options, so why not volunteer to talk about your job and what it entails?

The importance of

thank-you notes Handwriting thank-you letters is a tradition that should be encouraged, writes Kate Chapman... Teaching our children good manners is part and parcel of growing up – and one of those lessons is undoubtedly the importance of expressing gratitude.

expanding their vocabulary. This will benefit them during their school years, in addition to providing a useful foundation for their later lives.

Writing notes of appreciation for birthday, Christmas and other gifts can seem like an arduous task for many little ones, especially in the modern world when our time is so precious and it’s all too easy to send a quick text or email instead.

“With the rise of smartphones and tablets, a charming handwritten card can really set your child apart. Many thank-you messages are sent out electronically (or not at all), making a note extra special.”

In reality, writing thank-you letters is a wonderful way of teaching children about manners and etiquette, says etiquette expert Lisa Forde, also the owner of Dotty About Paper event stationery company.

Lisa says that writing cards will also help strengthen relationships with both family and friends, teaching children not to take relationships for granted.

“When you write a card, you have to stop and reflect on the importance of the gift. It teaches children to be grateful for their belongings and encourages them to treat things with more care,” explains Lisa. “It’s also a great way for children to practise both their handwriting and writing skills, while also

16

“As a mother of two who values the importance of family, this is something close to my heart,” she adds. “Writing thank-you cards also promotes communication skills, which helps children express positive emotions such as gratitude. Likewise, it's good for children to see how their actions can make others happy. I’ve had lovely feedback from

www.termtimes.ltd.uk

people who received handwritten notes from my two sons around birthdays or Christmas. “It makes you feel appreciated when you know a child has taken time out of their day to write to you. They’re a gift in themselves, and it makes the effort of writing them by hand worth it!” Liat Hughes Joshi, a parenting expert and author of Five Minute Parenting Fixes, agrees putting pen to paper can seem a little old-fashioned to many of us who now confine their communications to texting, email and social media. She adds: “Recipients however always seem to enjoy receiving them and appreciate the effort. It’s a great way for younger primary school age children to practise their writing skills too. “That said, I’m slightly uncomfortable with the idea of forcing children to do reams and reams of handwritten thank-you notes. The sentiment needs to be there and it shouldn’t become a huge chore.”

In the last year, seven more schools and 25 more families have joined the scheme. We now have more than

1,000 children benefitting from the wonderful opportunities that are available in the area, from our 150 Learning Destinations. The fabulous graduation held at Peterborough Cathedral in June, where we celebrated the achievements of nearly 200 graduates, was a huge highlight of the year.

and an online E-licence, and is then signposted to the many and varied CU validated Learning Activities and experiences which are available locally and nationally.

Peterborough Children’s University is flourishing and the future is looking bright for future growth. Any child, aged five to 14 years old can join The Children’s University and it will cost just £6 to get started. A child will be issued with a paper passport, the CU Passport To Learning,

Each hour of CU-validated learning they complete brings the child closer to a Children’s University graduation certificate, which starts at 30 hours and goes through to 1,000 hours. The awards are then presented at a locally organised CU graduation ceremony. The scheme is accessible through many schools and our Virtual School is available for children whose school isn’t registered with us.

THANKS FOR VOTING FOR US! We came second in the Tesco Bags of Help and have secured a £2,000 grant to support the work we do and the annual graduation at Peterborough Cathedral.

TIPS TO REDUCE LEAD LEVELS Only use water from the kitchen cold water tap for drinking and cooking Only cook or drink with fresh cold water – run the tap for a couple of minutes before use until you feel the temperature drop

Lead could be harmful, particularly if you’re pregnant or have young children. Check your pipe where it enters your property, usually at your stop tap.

Boiling will not remove lead from the water Replacing lead pipes is the only sure way to eliminate lead levels completely
