What makes your Christmas?

For us it’s a host of different characteristics that normally come together for a magical, fun day. As a child, receiving a stocking and opening the small gifts inside with wearilyopened eyes (4am wake-up call) was always met with heightened excitement. These days though, seeing others receive gifts and enjoying a hearty Christmas lunch would have to be my answer. However, one thing that trumps the actual day itself is the steady festive build-up.

Some may say Christmas starts too early, and with one local shop near us selling Christmas trees at the start of November we would have to say that’s far too early even in our book.

The beginning of Christmas comprises of festive markers that must be honoured - the advent calendar, the decorations, a trip to a panto, posting your letter to Father Christmas, the school Christmas fair and perhaps even visiting a grotto. Going to the panto is one we focus on in this issue, with a good look at four of the region’s top seasonal performances.

As you know, Term Times always tries to bring you excellent competitions. In this issue we offer a chance to win one of three different books, all great reads and for different ages this Christmas Plus, don’t miss out on a chance to win a child's ticket for all things Christmas at Skylark Garden Centre near March. Our ‘Day Trippers’ feature is a seasonal look at family Christmas activities in Peterborough. This regular feature, partnered by Hegarty Solicitors, aims to bring you a family guide to activities both nearby and a little further away. Looking ahead to 2023, we want to wish all our readers, schools, and advertisers a fun-filled and positive New Year when we will be looking at some new features that we may not have covered before. Therefore, with one final call-out, please email us with any suggestions, comments, or ideas you may have for next year.

Wishing you all happy holidays.

Enjoy a Christmas Afternoon Tea

Learning to hone your skills in martial arts, whether as a child or adult, improves fitness, confidence and strength of mind.

Each level of progression is rewarding, but what does it take to reach the top and gain that coveted black belt?

A white belt represents the open mindedness a student must possess in order to accept the teachings of their instructor. A black belt is the new beginning of learning and passing on the knowledge to others. There are on average 12 belts from white belt to black belt (adults 10 belts). To gain a black belt there is usually some form of test where the student must perform a selection of advanced martial arts moves and even a written exam.

Hicks Karate has a minimum 4 years training including a 6 month period between each of the last two grades to achieve a black belt. Students must be dedicated to regular minimum twice weekly training and have black belt attitude.

This is not the end, this is only the beginning. Earning a black belt is like starting again, teaching, mentoring and encouraging the next generation.

For more information contact Sensei Andrew Hicks of Hicks Family Martial Arts School on 07974196256 or visit www.hickskarate.co.uk

Winner Review

I just wanted to touch base and say thank you for the family tickets that Fletcher won to go and see the dinosaur exhibition at Peterborough Cathedral. He loved it so much he went twice! First with his Grandparents at the beginning of the summer holidays and then again with us towards the end of the holiday.

We were all fascinated, and the animatronics were amazing. The big question was the T-rex a hunter or a scavenger, after the two visits Fletcher decided that a T-rex was a bit of both!

We all love an afternoon tea, food and a show, so why not treat yourself to both this year?

Peter Pan Flies High at The Cresset

Do you believe in fairies? Let’s hope you do. Get ready to take a flying trip to Neverland this Christmas as The Cresset pantomime Peter Pan takes to the Peterborough stage from 15–31 December.

It’s a classic tale and perfect to sprinkle a little magic over the festivities – and yes there will be flying! Headlining the cast is Kevin Kennedy, well loved as Curly Watts in Coronation Street, who’ll be starring as the baddie Captain Hook along with James Fletcher, who starred in Hollyoaks, as our young hero Peter Pan.

Term Times caught up with the panto’s hero and villain…

Who is your favourite childhood TV celebrity or actor?

‘I’d have to say Bernard Cribbins. I love Bernard in everything he did and I got to work with him once and while we were sat waiting together I said - do the voice of Orinoco from the Wombles - and he did it! So I think it’s fitting I say him.’ Kevin

‘Fireman Sam, Batman and Brum – all the cartoon ones!’ Jamie

Best thing about being Captain Hook/Peter Pan?

‘He’s immediately recognisable as being the baddie – once they see the hook and the hair and the hat then you don’t have to work too hard, they know exactly who Captain Hook is.’ Kevin

‘Getting to be a boy forever!’ Jamie

Three words to best describe your character…

‘Evil. Conniving. Ridiculous.’ Kevin ‘Full. Of. Energy!’ Jamie

What’s so good about panto?

‘Panto for me is vital to the British psyche. It’s as much a part of Christmas as Christmas dinner

and falling out with the relatives. And no one does it as well as we do.’ Kevin

‘I love doing panto! I think I’ve done about seven or eight and it’s always such a lovely way to spend Christmas. Everyone comes wanting to be cheered up and to forget about all the problems they’ve had in the year and just come and have a lovely time.’ Jamie

Are kids a tough audience?

‘Kids just say it as it is – and good for them. They know if you’re not putting 100% into it which is great… and a curse sometimes!’ Kevin

‘If kids don’t like something they let you know! Kids can be the toughest critics but also the most rewarding people to win over, because if they do believe in fairies this Christmas they’re going to have a wonderful time.’ Jamie

New Year’s Resolutions

As we head into 2023, our reporter Jo looks at fun resolutions for children to make this new year.

Join a New Club

Whether your child fancies trying acro dance, martial arts or football, what a perfect time to give a new club a try. Clubs give them a chance to learn a new skill and find something fun that they’re good at while developing physical and mental skills.

Groups can help build confidence and the opportunity to make new friends. Many will offer a free taster or trial session.

Get Cooking

We all know how hard it is to get kids to try different food. As a New Year’s resolution, experiment by cooking together, making new dishes to encourage them to tuck into something different. You can research meal options on the internet to see if anything takes their fancy, involving suggestions to try new ingredients or international dishes.

Be Active

It is so important for our children to be physically active but with so much to do inside, it’s hard to get them to go out. Therefore, a great New Year’s resolution is to get them moving.

Whether it’s going to play football once a week, swimming or encouraging more jumping on the trampoline, these are terrific ways to ensure all stay healthy while having fun. Involve some technology as well; step counts and apps such as Strava can be excellent ways of encouraging older children to gauge their progress.

Help with the Pets

Whether your family have a cat or dog, rabbit or goldfish, there is something the children could do to help with their pet. Aim to build responsibility and learn respect for animals. Organise a rota to feed, clean or walk them. If they haven’t got their own pet, helping with a friend or neighbour’s furry friend is an option and they will bond with the pet too.

Be Kind Daily

Being kind is so important to the people around us and one act of kindness a day is a great resolution. Whether that is to a sibling, school friends or a random stranger, it will encourage good behaviour and leave them feeling happier. They could do a good deed, give a compliment or help others when needed.

Be More Eco-Friendly

The importance of being more eco-friendly to help prevent climate is on families agenda's at the moment. Your child could aim to be more eco-friendly during 2023. Whether that’s by ensuring they use the recycling bin and they put the correct items in the right bag. Or focus on reducing the energy bills by switching off personal devices or consoles for a while. They could also look for items in the house to reuse and repurpose, encouraging more eco-led decision making for all ages.

Fast Family Recipes to Enjoy

School holidays mean more hungry mouths more often and mealtime stress - what to cook, how to keep costs down and will they eat it?

Sunday Times best seller and Amazon chart topper Rebecca Wilson may have the answer. Her fourth book, Fast Family Food, is out now and is geared towards helping families reduce stress around mealtimes. Over 100 recipes are included, suitable for age six months and above and are just 10 minutes prep time or less.

Pizza Crackers Recipe

Makes approx. 40 crackers, prep 10 minutes, bake 8–10 minutes.

These crackers will keep for up to a week in an airtight container, or you can freeze the raw dough for up to 3 months. Defrost thoroughly, then roll out and bake as shown in method.

Ingredients

 160g plain (all-purpose) flour, plus extra for dusting

 85g chilled unsalted butter, cubed

 100g Cheddar cheese, grated

 2 tsp dried porcini mushroom powder (optional)

 2 tsp dried mixed herbs

 2 tbsp tomato purée (paste)

 1 medium egg

Steps

Preheat the oven to 190°C fan (210°C/415°F/Gas 6–7).

Add the flour and butter to a food processor and whizz until the mixture forms the texture of breadcrumbs. Add the cheese, dried porcini mushroom powder, if using, and dried herbs.

 Pulse until the ingredients are combined. Now add the tomato purée and egg, then whizz until the dough clumps together.

Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and tear it in two. Coat one of the pieces in a little flour from the work surface, then quickly roll it out as thinly as you can, around 34mm is fine.

Next, using a sharp knife, cut the dough into chunky strips approx. 3cm wide and 5 - 6cm long.

 Space them out on a large, non-stick baking tray, ensuring they don’t touch. If you have time, prick each cracker with a fork a few times.

 You could now bake half and freeze the rest of the dough for another day.

 Bake in the preheated oven for 8–10 minutes until the crackers have darkened. Allow to stand, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

In this festive family story the existence of Christmas has been threatened by one teeny angelic mishap – will you help to save Christmas?

Operation Nativity is a funny and heartrending story filled with festive delight, a nativity treasure hunt, and the joy of celebrating with the ones you love.

When Oscar and Molly rush outside to investigate a massive crash in the night, they're not expecting to find a dazed Angel Gabriel wandering around their grandparents' back garden and to find themselves in a race against time to save Christmas.

But if they don't track down a missing shepherd called Steve, Balthazar the wise man, the donkey and the actual Mary and Joseph, who've all crash-landed in Chipping Bottom, not only will Christmas cease to exist, but they will too!

Operation Nativity is on. The perfect reminder of all the things you love about the festive season, this book includes an extra section of 12 Days of Christmas Family Activities, which ties into the story and will keep everyone entertained over the holidays.

Give the Gift of Learning

If your Christmas wish is to help boost your child’s learning opportunities and end their struggles with maths or English, a personalised learning programme at Kip McGrath could be the best gift you give.

Many children find learning hard in a classroom environment and benefit from a more tailored one-to-one approach. Students and parents are lining up to say thank you to our team of qualified teachers at Kip McGrath who’ve boosted learning and confidence for dozens of students. Here’s what our parents and students say:

'I didn’t enjoy maths before coming here, but after coming here and you teaching me, I did start to enjoy it quite a biteven though I may not have shown it that much.' M (student)

'I just want to thank you both for supporting R. He loves coming to the session and he can't stop talking about Rebecca. He says Rebecca knows everything and he is so happy with the way she teaches him. R was traumatised by another tutor online before starting with Kip McGrath. I can see how confident he is becoming. Thank you for everything you do for him. He tells me he never wants to stop coming to the centre.' NR (parent)

'We’ve noticed not only an improvement in our child’s academic achievements, but more importantly, an improvement in his overall confidence levels.' K (parent)

'R really likes to do his homework which Rachel sets for him. Today, R said to me that going to Kip McGrath is more fun than playing Cricket.' N (parent)

'Thanks so much… I really appreciate all the opportunities you have given me…I will miss you lots.' A (student)

'I would just also like to say that I am really pleased with D’s progress. His recent school assessments have shown that he has made great progress despite Lockdown, which we are thrilled with, so thank you, so, so much. I know that a huge part of this is due to the tutor lessons.' HR (parent)

'Since going to Kip he’s had a big boost in his confidence and has caught up with his school work.' M (parent)

'I can't remember if I relayed a particularly nice comment I received from A’s new maths teacher at the school. She said 'A was a natural mathematician', so very positive and from where we were a few years ago is very promising indeed so please thank your staff.' DR (parent)
