Reading this letter, you will already be well into term one and sailing serenely towards the half term holidays. Perhaps it’s your first school term and it’s all been a hectic but enjoyable learning curve, or a new school and your child has been busy making new friends. Or maybe it’s Year 6 and that strange sensation of preparing your little one for the ‘big school’ has slowly begun, making the most of the final experiences of primary school. Either way the half term is like the pit stop in a Grand Prix, it’s definitely needed, and we may have to change the odd tyre, refuel and come out focused for the challenges ahead.

This opportunity to pull off the school circuit is a short one, but one that offers lots of fun and seasonal favourites. Pumpkins are very much part of the season so we look at the various events taking place and the alternative ways to make the most of them in addition to pumpkin carving. Plus, we feature four great farm shops in our region to visit; all of them have excellent events to attend this autumn. Often at this time of year small spiky visitors come and visit our gardens. Not always easy to see, but this autumn have a look out for the hedgehog. With populations decreasing, these little creatures need our help. Read all about how you can support them on page 8.

In this issue we take a trip to King's Lynn, an excellent destination for a break or day trip. This local town is steeped in maritime heritage and even has a story to tell about a witch. Look out for our regular competitions which include ticket giveaways, books and two wonderful Scalextric sets to win (pit stops optional). It’s great seeing the competition winners in each issue parade their prizes, see pages 6 and 8 for last issue’s lucky winners. Wishing you and your family an excellent half term, refuelled, refreshed and ready for the laps ahead.

Mentioning the competition you're entering, send your name, age, address, phone number and school name to TermTimes, 70 Rutland Road, Stamford, Lincs PE9 1UW or via email to steven@termtimes.ltd.uk

Alternatively, competitions will be posted on our website at www.termtimes.ltd.uk Please ask your parents’ permission before entering via the internet. All winners will be picked at random and Term Times' decision is final.

Does your child have a birthday soon? Would you like to have it announced in a forthcoming issue of Term Times?

Just send us their name, photo, age, date of birthday and details of who it's from to: steven@termtimes.ltd.uk

Help the Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs are a beloved aspect of our wildlife but with numbers in decline they need our help. Autumn is an ideal time to get the kids involved in caring for these quirky creatures.

Supporting and encouraging local hedgehog populations begins in our own gardens and Caroline Fitton of the Cambridge Wildlife Trust says they desperately need our help.

“With up to 7,000 sharp spines, the capacity to sprint up to two metres a second, able to climb walls and swim ponds, there's a lot more to the lovable humble hedgehog than many may think. Despite these super heroic qualities, hedgehogs are under threat - their numbers have declined by about 30% since the millennium.”

What could be better than encouraging the kids to be wildlife rangers in their own gardens whilst also helping to support local hedgehog populations?

Create a Hedgehog Home

Hedgehogs are nocturnal and, like all of us, need a safe and secure home. Why not inspire youngsters to create the perfect house for a hedgehog?

Caroline says it’s an easy way to help, “Provide simple nesting sites - log and leaf piles as well as purpose-built hedgehog hotels make great places for hogs to hibernate over the winter.”

Encourage an Ecosystem

Hedgehogs eat creepy crawlies so developing an entire ecosystem is a great way to support them whilst also teaching the kids all about the codependency of the natural world. Encourage juicy insects by growing and sacrificing a few plants so hedgehogs have a ready-made food chain.

Put it in a food station to keep dry and prevent cats from taking it. There is never enough food for the second litter of the year being born around now to gain sufficient weight before hibernation. Putting out food and water is helpful especially in drought conditions - cat food is fine or purpose-made hog food but never milk; they are unable to digest it.”

Nurture Natural Resources

Ready to put the garden to bed for the winter? Picking up twigs and leaves doesn’t have to be a boring job. With a little help from the kids, collect them up and place in a secure area of the garden to encourage hedgehogs to feel at home.

Jenny adds, “The hedgehog population has declined rapidly and the number is now estimated to be less than a million but, encouragingly, they have shown signs of some recovery in urban areas with human help.”

Don’t Forget the Snacks

As hedgehogs hibernate in December and January, now is the perfect time to provide extra stores for them. Jenny Sutton of the Cambridge Hedgehogs charity explains, “Kitten biscuits are popular especially when natural food is scarce.

Keep Kids Active with Martial Arts

All of us rely on technology more these days with too much time spent sitting in front of screens, including our kids, and inactive children are more likely to become inactive adults so it’s vital to encourage exercise and teach them the importance of keeping fit early on.

Exercise is not only important in reducing our risk of major illnesses but also helps boost self-esteem, improves mood and sleep quality and can help reduce stress and depression. The training techniques involved with Martial Arts can have many benefits physically and mentally, bringing discipline and focus.

Some of the health benefits for children who exercise regularly include:

Improving fitness, posture and balance

 Providing an opportunity to socialise

Better concentration

Improving self-esteem and academic achievements

Building a stronger heart, bones and healthier muscles

Lowering stress and encouraging a better night’s sleep

It’s also important to keep it fun if you’re going to encourage your child to exercise regularly. Martial Arts is not only varied enough to keep children interested, it also has a great reward system with children earning their belts as they work towards the goal of one day becoming a Black Belt.

Hicks Karate offers a range of sessions for all ages with classes available in Orton, Fengate, Eye and Deeping. Call 07974 196256 or visit www.hickskarate.co.uk

Helping a hedgehog in the garden is a perfect way to support local populations whilst also absorbing kids in outdoor activities this autumn. As well as inspiring young minds to be responsible for the animals that share our world, small efforts can have a huge positive impact.

We all know the importance of exercise and the part it plays in keeping us healthy in later life so it’s important to develop a love of being active early on.

Farm to Fork

Knowing the source of your nutrient-rich fresh food and supporting your local community are just a couple of reasons why buying farm fresh may be best. Sourcing produce directly from growers or locally-supplied farm shops can ensure the best quality, nutritional value and add an extra feel-good factor as you bring your food from farm to fork. Here are four of our local farm shops to try…

The best of farm fresh. Term Times visits four of our region’s popular farm shops to discover what they offer and what events they are planning.

Worzals Farm Shop is a hidden gem in the Fens. This welcoming family-run business just off the A47 near Wisbech has won top accolades in the food and beverage industry. Selling a range of local produce from jams to award-winning beef, and plenty of local artisan products, Worzals Farm Shop is well worth a visit. Walk between the pantry items, through its array of chilled produce and you’ll arrive at Worzals’ experienced butchers. And don’t forget to stop by the deli.

Vine House Farm at Deeping St Nicholas, near Spalding, is also an amazing provider of British and locallysourced food bringing customers as much Lincolnshire-sourced produce as it can. As well as providing its own array of organic produce directly from its farm, the shop sells organic frozen food, store cupboard essentials such as preserves, bread and flour, fresh flowers, free range eggs and a fishmonger on a Thursday. The food is such good quality you’ll find it sold in its café and its potatoes sold to the likes of McCain and Morrisons.

Upcoming Events

Worzals Farm Shop Launch Indoor Pumpkin Patch

From 3–31 October, Worzals Garden Centre, near Wisbech, will be opening Rusty’s Great Pumpkin Patch and it’s set to be bigger than ever, with more than 20,000 home-grown pumpkins. There will also be an electric car track, treasure trail and treats available at Bertha’s coffee and creamery kiosk. www.worzals.com

Week of Wickedness at Skylark

Skylark Garden Centre’s Spooktacular event is back for another year from 22 – 30 October.

Head towards March to enjoy Skylark Garden Centre’s farm shop, renowned for its fresh and budget-conscious essentials range, as well as a recently expanded offering. As well as providing its usual locally-sourced fresh fruit and vegetables, the farm shop now stocks a wide range of essentials from local suppliers, including bread, flour, local cakes, apple juice, milk, eggs and honey. Don’t miss its new freezer section also stocking a great range of local meats. If you live within 7 miles you can get free delivery.

If you live closer to Peterborough, Ferry Meadows offers delicious and locallysourced produce that you can purchase from its farm shop on your next visit. Featuring a range of fresh food, kitchen cupboard specialities and beverages, you can buy newly-baked bread, meat and pies, seasonings and even fudge, to name just a few, all locally sourced. As a part of the Park to Plate partnership, Nene Park Trust work with local first-generation farmers, the Baxter Brothers, who prioritise the welfare of animals and the environment.

Families can enjoy a jam-packed day of pumpkin picking and carving, phantoms, magic and comedy. Other fun activities include den building, pig racing, scarecrow smash, the jumping pillow and King Coop’s Castle. Book online for tickets. www.skylark-events.co.uk

Scarecrows and Broomsticks at Nene Park

Home to a multitude of activities from watersports and cycle hire to boat trips, archery and climbing-wall sessions, there’s never a dull day at Nene Park.

During October half-term, families can also make scarecrows (23 October) to decorate the

park, with the best winning a prize. On 25, 26 and 28 October, families can search for the witch's lost items in the trees and if they find them all they’ll be rewarded with their own broomsticks!

Pumpkinwww.nenepark.org.uk/eventsTrailatVineHouse Farm

During half term, the Vine House Farm will be offering tractor and trailer rides, a pumpkin trail and a chance to win a tree-planting kit. If you turn up in Halloween costumes, children can get a free hot chocolate too. Head along to learn about the farm and the resident wildlife. www.vinehousefarmshopcafe.co.uk

Fun with Pumpkins

As the evenings draw in and autumn arrives, our roving reporter Jo looks at some of the fun things you can do with pumpkins to keep the kids amused, aside from carving them.

Paint Your Pumpkin

If your child loves to paint, why not let them get creative with pumpkins? It offers the perfect base for painting and you can create fun designs. From cats to dogs, witches to princesses, the choices are endless. You could even use glow-in-thedark paint to help the pumpkins stand out on

It’sHalloween.afunway

to keep them busy during half term and it’s a lot easier for kids than carving, even if it is still messy fun. Just ensure you protect your table before they get stuck in!

Make Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate

We all love hot chocolate at this time of year, especially our kids. So why not scoop out the inside of the pumpkin and puree it? You can easily do this in the microwave for 20 minutes or in a steamer (This should be undertaken by an adult).

Use the pumpkin puree to create the perfect hot chocolate, just add the usual ingredients such as cocoa powder, milk and whipped cream. It will be their go-to favourite during October. You can also add it to your latte.

Create a Planter

A great way to mix outdoor, garden fun with your pumpkin is to create a planter. This is another easy fun activity and is an ideal way to make use of your pumpkins for longer.

Just cut off the top of the pumpkin and clean it out. It’s a great base and you can then add an array of flowers. It’s very autumnal and the kids will love putting it on display and taking care of the flowers.

Pumpkin Bowling

You don’t need to go to the bowling alley to have some fun – just head into the garden. For a an entertaining family activity just find a good space and place some pins (plastic bottles or cans will do) and create a lane.

You can then each take it in turns to roll your pumpkins and see if you can get a strike. You will be surprised how long the pumpkins will last and it’s a free game the kids will love.

Whether it’s festivals and fine food, maritime history and heritage, parks and cycleways or theatre and films there is such a lot to choose from to keep everyone entertained.

In the heart of King’s Lynn we wandered through The Walks, the only surviving 18th century town walk in Norfolk, and an impressive area of open space, perfect for a picnic or to let the kids burn off some energy.

We strolled along South Quay and grabbed a lovely lunch outside at the Marriott’s Warehouse before heading into the town centre and exploring the two market places. As well as many of the well known chains it was good to see a fine selection of independents in the mix.

King’s Lynn was of the most important ports in England from the 12th century and part of the Hanseatic League, an extremely influential trading association. The elegant Custom House is one of the town’s famous features with a great view over

the harbour, interesting displays and the chance to discover more about King’s Lynn’s famous mariners Vancouver and Nelson.

One of the many guided walks will tell you all you need to know and point out lots of details you might otherwise miss – such as the Witch’s Heart wall carving in Tuesday Market where legend has it, a condemned woman’s heart landed as it burst from her chest while she was burned at the stake.

At Lynn Museum you can step back in time as you walk into the world of Seahenge, the astonishing Bronze Age timber circle that forms the museum’s stunning centerpiece. While True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum houses a programme of exhibitions as well as film shows, guided walks, gift shop and tearoom.

The stunning attraction, Stories of Lynn, really brings local history to life in a fun and interactive exhibition. Fascinating displays are enhanced by a free phone app where you’ll discover tales of seafarers, explorers, merchants and miscreants

who’ve shaped the town over 800 years. You can tour the old gaol cells where some of the most notorious prisoners were held, and see the magnificent King John King’sCup.Lynn

is also known for its thriving cultural scene and annual festivals. There are frequent special events but regular entertainment is available at the Alive Corn Exchange theatre and cinema which has a full programme including tribute acts, comedy nights, dance performances and children’s shows such as Room on the Broom (18-19 October) and the annual panto, this year it’s Snow White (7-31 December).

On this occasion we opted for a film at the independent Majestic Cinema, a beautiful old building with stained glass windows, but with modern facilities and four screens.

Most things are easy to walk to so whether it’s history and heritage, or culture and dining you can spend a day exploring. We’ve only mentioned a few ideas here so take your own voyage of discovery.

The show is inspired by the Nativity story and timed to coincide with the start of the Advent season. The opening light show is accompanied by music composed by David Harper and then as you enter the medieval building you’ll experience an immersive light and sound installation, this time inspired by the fragility and beauty of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Funded by LNER’s Customer and Community Investment Fund, the project aims to provide people with the tools, confidence, and motivation to cycle more often.

A range of free events have been hosted by Nene Outdoors over the summer, but there is still plenty to get involved with this autumn! Local hidden treasure maps, I-Spy games, and other resources have been created for families to use during their cycle rides to highlight places of interest and activities they can do along the way.

“On Ya Bike hopes to support residents with making more sustainable travel choices, whilst getting them out and appreciating their local green spaces,” says Stuart Dawks, Director of Operations at PECT. “Cycling has a fantastic impact on our health and wellbeing, plus having a positive impact on the environment – making Peterborough a cleaner, healthier place to live.” returns to Cathedral with another light and sound display this November.

Meet the Tutors

Not all children learn at the same pace, and not all thrive in the classroom, so if the return to school is an anxious time for your child Kip McGrath has a great team to support them. Our expert tutors can give friendly face-to-face tutoring in maths and English that helps build confidence with personalised learning programmes.

Michelle

This year, I am combining both working in the classroom and tutoring. I’m a qualified primary school teacher working predominantly in Key Stage 2. I enjoy teaching all subjects, but my favourite has to be maths (I have a degree in Banking, Finance and Management). I have two young children and two kittens!

Faye

I am a primary trained teacher and enjoy working with all ages from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 3. I’ve always enjoyed working with children and seeing them develop their confidence when learning new skills. I enjoy reading, love a good crossword and spend the majority of my free time with my pets. If a child is finding school difficult I have always found a quote by A.A. Milne to be helpful; 'You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think’.

Rebecca

I am a qualified teacher and have worked as a tutor for Kip McGrath for the last two years. I particularly enjoy teaching English and took a degree in English Literature at University. I love being out in my garden and grow my own vegetables. I also enjoy travelling, particularly to hot countries.

Amy

I have worked at Kip McGrath over a year now and it is a wonderful place to be. I am a teacher and have been for over 10 years. I have three children. I am passionate about reading books and sharing this joy with the children I work with. The best thing I always tell the children about Kip is that we can work through things together, at your own pace and sometimes I will even tell you the answer –learning does not have to be scary.

Sophie

I loved the classroom but left my role as a primary school teacher to have children and now do my tutoring work around them. Although I have taught all age groups I mainly tutor upper Key Stage 2 level and really enjoy it. I have a degree in dance, a dog called Olive, and I love a kitchen disco!
