In this issue

Welcome back!

We all know this time of year can be a bit hectic and sometimes it can be little easy to lose focus. Christmas and the New Year are times of expectation, excitement and also realigning personal and family goals. After last year’s restrictions, we are really hoping the 2021 festive season will be more relaxed and, at the time of writing this letter, things are heading in a more positive direction. Thinking about Christmas always makes me nostalgic - toys I used to receive and those I have forgotten about for my children. Then there were the traditions we used to keep when I was just a wee dot! Yes, I still want to purchase one of those 1980s selection box stockings with white wire mesh and the puzzles on the back. But that is where my reminiscences are going to stop! This holiday is one (where possible) for enjoying time with our families, getting back out there and connecting with what we have missed – all as safely as possible, of course. In this issue we aim to give you a taste of what is available for our families. Take your pick from the fantastic selection of local pantomimes we have on offer, plus there are some great Grottos to visit. Competitions are well covered in this issue with a great family experience to be won at the New Theatre for a family to watch Peppa Pig. Glo Golf, in Peterborough, is giving you the chance to say 'thank you' to your teacher or TA for all their hard work and to win them a fun experience. And books from Usbourne and a prize package from Star Stable are all up for grabs. Good luck to all who enter. Wishing you a relaxing holiday that is both safe, fulfilling and one that will offer memories for years to come.

REDWINGS PROMOTION

Surprise for local charity founder Deborah Slator, Chair of Whittlesey-based charity ‘Defibrillators For All’, was asked to demonstrate how to use a defibrillator for a new (spoof) TV programme, called ‘Saving Britain’. But, on the day of filming, things didn’t go to plan - she had actually been nominated for ‘The One Show – One Big Thank You’!

All I want for Christmas All of the rescued horses and donkeys at Redwings Horse Sanctuary want this Christmas is the chance to continue living a life free of fear and neglect.

Gary Swan, ex councillor and local resident, contacted the BBC to nominate Deborah.

Christmas shoppers can help make their wish come true by sponsoring a Redwings 'Adoption Star' as a truly unique gift for a loved one. Every penny goes towards their care and that of their four-legged friends at the Sanctuary – of which there are over 1,500!

"I just wanted to nominate Deborah to highlight the fact that we have so many defibrillators in Whittlesey now,’ he said. ‘I wanted to show what an outstanding person Deborah is, along with everyone who helps her in the team." Deborah set up the charity eight years ago to ensure the town was as heart safe as possible. Whittlesey now has 49 public access, 27 commercially owned and 13 private residence defibrillators. On the day of filming, there were many thank you messages from members of the community and a celebrity surprise from Shaun Wallace, The Dark Destroyer on ITV's The Chase. Deborah said: "Now the shock element has gone and I am not feeling quite so stunned, I would like to say thank you to all those who help and support me, to enable me to be free to think and do my thing." ELAINE SLADE BOOKS PROMOTION

How can you ensure that your children face life with confidence and positivity? Read on... Elaine Slade, a retired teacher living in Peterborough, talks to Term Times about how she made a childhood dream come true when she became a successful children’s author. Do you have a childhood dream you are still waiting to fulfil? That was how I felt when I retired from my teaching career as a Deputy Head of a large primary school in Surrey. I had longed to be a children’s author ever since I sat at the top of a tall elm tree in my garden in East London and made-up stories in my head. We moved to Werrington three years ago to support elderly relatives and I put my energy, teaching experience and creativity into fulfilling my dream to provide quality, children's story books which support parents and teachers to raise youngsters’ self-esteem. They are aimed at three to eight-year-olds, although the reviews state the theme is applicable to all ages and abilities.

Director Nicola Sandall said: ‘After a fantastic response to Dick Whittington, our last production before lockdown, we are so excited to be getting back on stage and bringing you a show that’s been around since the beginning of SPP. With many modern references and songs that were not around in the fifties, mobile phones, social distancing, and even hip hop … things have really changed since then!’ In a nutshell, Jack and his family are poor and have to sell the family cow at market to raise money to pay their taxes to the local mayor who needs to pay the Giant in the Sky. Inside Track with Alfie Garford

Alfie Garford is a 12 year old kart racer from Maxey, Peterborough. Alfie clinched the British Kart Championship in 2021 in only his second season in the series. The championship has launched the careers of Formula One stars such as Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Lando Norris. Watch this space! How did you get into British kart racing? My dad used to race in it, so when I was seven, he started taking me round to race at the local circuits, building my confidence and speed until we thought it was time to step up to British Championship level. What was your local primary school and what did you enjoy most at school? I went to Northborough Primary. I enjoyed sports days and residential trips. Can you tell us about the championships and how they operate? The championship takes place over six rounds this year, each at a different circuit in the UK. It is normally six rounds but has been cut short due to Covid. It is operated by Motorsport UK and they govern and support all motorsport in the country, so it’s a very professionally run championship. How does the points scoring work?

Alfie Garford

You score points for your position after qualifying and heats have finished, then points for the pre-final position, and points for the main final. There are three point scoring events in each round.

www.termtimes.ltd.uk

Where do the races take place and what is your favourite track? Races take place all over the country. My favourite track is Whilton Mill, near Northampton. This was the track where I had my first win at so it means a lot to me. How fast the does the kart go? I usually see 65mph at the end of the straight on the speedo. Best and most challenging performances so far and why? My biggest achievement to date has to be, being crowned 2021 Wera Tools British Karting Champion. I think I am also the youngest person to ever achieve it in the class I raced in. I will now have my name on the same trophy as drivers such as Jenson Button! Toughest competitor and why? Alistair Cresswell is my main rival and top seed from last year when he came second in the championship. He is also my team mate! How does school and education now help you in racing? School is important. The routines and discipline have taught me that anything you want badly enough is worth the hard work. 11

Beauty and the Beast is coming to the stage this Christmas. From 11–30 December, Stuart Morrison Productions is presenting a fantastic family pantomime that brings everything you expect from a Cresset panto: glittering sets, spectacular songs and dance, plenty of audience participation – plus some truly terrible jokes! Headlining this year’s production is Grant Urquhart as cheeky chap Silly Billy, who is best known for being a featured waiter on Channel 4’s First Dates and First Dates Hotel. The extremely talented Victoria Jane is Beauty, whilst the Good Fairy is Kim Taylforth of Bad Girls, Brookside and London’s Burning. Andrew Crawford from CBeebies is the Beast! Let us hear from the Beauty and the Beast…

12

at The Cresset’s enchanting Beauty and the Beast

What did you want to be when you were at primary school? Andrew (Beast): I didn't know I wanted to be an actor until my High School acting classes. Primary school should be a time to explore and have fun. Victoria (Beauty): I wanted to be a baker! I loved baking with my mum – she is an amazing baker. I loved kneading bread dough and watching it transform when it was baked. I still find it magical. Favourite school lesson and why? Andrew: I always loved drama lessons at school and also maths. I like them for different reasons. In drama we can express ourselves; in maths we problem solve. Victoria: I loved PE, dance and music. I was always happiest being active. Who is the most famous person you have ever met and funniest moment on TV? Andrew: That has to be Mr Tumble. CBeebies was a wonderful place to go into and work. Po from the Teletubbies came to visit the set one day, we saw the filming of Justin's House on another. But the biggest laugh we had on our set was when we were asked to play 'air bass',

which is just like air guitar but slightly longer, and our director decided not to call 'Cut!', so it left us playing an imaginary bass guitar for minutes on end until everyone on set burst out laughing. What was your favourite TV Show as a child? Victoria: I was a huge Thomas the Tank Engine fan. I had all the trains and I would take them everywhere with me in my rucksack...but back in those days they were made of metal Not the lightest things to carry!

Any advice for aspiring performers out there who are starting out? Andrew: Enjoy the process of making and creating so you have a great chance of keeping it up. For years I had goals and aims to reach for, and often forgot to enjoy the process. Victoria: Never stop learning. Even when you have finished training, keep looking for ways to keep pushing yourself. There are always new skills to learn.

THE CRESSET PROMOTION

What makes an excellent Beast in this year’s panto? Andrew: The Beast is a great character to play. He was turned into this Beast as punishment, so he has a lot of history and back story to go through as an actor. But for Panto we always need fun and music and dancing, so I cannot wait for get my moody grooves on. Why is a panto so special to you? Victoria: Pantos are very special to everyone involved. It is many people's first experience of theatre and that really is a great honour to be a part of. There really is something for everyone in Pantos and, for me, it is what makes Christmas, Christmas.

C Separate the egg whites from the yolks (save the yolks and use them in a fry up or scrambled egg for breakfast!). D Using an electric whisk, whisk the egg whites into stiff peaks and set aside. F Use a rolling pin to bash the pecans into small pieces (in the middle of a clean tea towel works well!).

I Bake for 10 mins until the tops begin to go golden.

G Add the egg whites, honey/maple syrup and crushed pecans to the well and mix to combine.

J Blitz the remaining 20g desiccated coconut in a blender to make 'snow'.

H Use a tablespoon to scoop the mixture and form it into balls just bigger than a 50p (it should make around 20). The mixture is a bit sticky, but it rolls well - you can rub oil into your hands to make it a bit less sticky! Place the balls on the lined baking tray.

K Mix 2 teaspoons of honey/maple syrup with a little water ready to roll the balls in.

COLOUR ME IN

L Allow the pecan balls to cool slightly and then roll each one in the honey/maple syrup mix and then in the milled coconut to create a snow effect.

DAY TRIPPERS 10 reasons to visit

Lincoln With 2,000 years of history, this city is the perfect place for families and school parties to visit…

B Steep Hill – It’s the cobbled Roman gateway to the historic Cathedral Quarter requiring using some excess energy as it’s Britain’s fourth steepest street. But with some of the city’s oldest buildings and a wealth of independent shops and tea rooms, the picturesque climb is worth every breath. C The Castle – Normally the first attraction on everyone’s must-see list. Built by William the Conqueror, there’s much to appreciate beyond battlements and ancient gateways. This is a symbol of power and punishment. Take the third of a mile long Medieval Wall Walk, transporting you through the history of Lincoln, explore the Victorian prison with its restored cells and be impressed by the internationally-renowned Magna Carta; the original document signed by King John that changed the course of history. D The Cathedral – The tallest building in the world for over 200 years (until the spire collapsed in a storm in 1549), it remains one of the most spectacular Gothic buildings you are ever likely to see. Enjoy the magnificent exterior and interiors and colourful stainedglass windows. Try to explore one of the roof and tower tours. Youngsters love locating the famous Lincoln Imp, a once naughty creature that angels turned to stone.

E Christmas Market – Lincoln illuminated is the perfect place to visit over the festive period, the 250 stalls nestled between the Norman castle and the Gothic cathedral make it the oldest and largest Christmas market. Gifts galore, food, drink, entertainment – that’s why the day and night event attracts up to a quarter of million visitors over four days from 2-5 December. Smell the roasting chestnuts yet? A park and ride service operates from Lincolnshire showground. F Lincolnshire Museum of Country Life – This amazing, free museum of Lincolnshire’s past, housing nearly 250,000 objects in a Victorian barracks, celebrates the commercial, agricultural and community culture of the county from 1750 to the present day. The WW1 tank made in Lincoln is a reminder of the city’s industrial heritage. Open weekends (online booking). G The Collection Museum – In this awardwinning archaeology museum in the cultural quarter of Lincoln, you can explore the huge variety of historic and art exhibitions, interactive displays and regular talks that celebrate the city’s rich history. Plenty of Roman exhibits – and it’s free. Café on site. H Usher Gallery – Lincolnshire’s only purposebuilt art gallery, next to the Collection Museum, displays its own permanent exhibitions, alongside pieces on loan from national collections. Visit free to see fine art, sculpture, decorative art and horology on display. Admire works from artists such as Turner and Lowry.

I International Bomber Command Centre – This is the only place in the world where the devastating losses of Bomber Command during World War II are commemorated. The Chadwick Centre hosts three exhibition galleries providing a space for recognition, remembrance, reflection and education about the Unit. The Centre includes the UK's tallest war memorial, The Spire, the same height as the wingspan of a Lancaster Bomber, and is surrounded by curved walls carrying the names of 57,871 men and women of Bomber Command who gave their lives. On the city outskirts, this is free to visit but tickets are needed for the exhibitions. J Brayford Pool Waterfront – Once you have finished shopping in the vibrant city centre, it will be time for everyone to refuel and there is no better place than on the waterfront of Brayford Pool, England’s oldest inland harbour, crammed with eating establishments. There are guided boat trips along the canal from Easter to mid-October. K Guildhall and Stonebow – The 16th century Guildhall and Stonebow, forming an archway over the main High Street, is home to City Council meetings and the heritage of Lincoln’s local politics. It houses numerous pieces of regalia, including the sword of Richard II. There are original features throughout and almost 1,000 years of history to discover from its royal beginnings to today. Guided tours available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30am and 2pm.

KIP MCGRATH PROMOTION

Could your child be suffering with maths anxiety? For some children disliking maths turns into ‘maths anxiety’. This can cause strong negative emotions including a fear of failure. Sadly, fear impacts on working memory and hinders attempts to conduct maths calculations.

What does maths anxiety look like? Some symptoms to look out for in your child:

As a parent, what can I do to ease my child’s maths anxiety?

• Unusual nervousness when doing or thinking about maths

At home try to focus on what they can do, rather than on what they cannot. Find ways to enjoy maths at home. Baking, gardening, shopping, and board games are all fun ways to practise core maths skills. Talk about your own maths experiences using positive rather than negative language.

• Passive behaviour - will not even try or has ‘given up’ • Feeling that they are the only child in the class who cannot find the answer • A belief that they can’t improve and are naturally ‘bad at maths’ • Lack of confidence, expecting to not know the answer before the question is asked • Panics in tests or if called on to give an answer in the classroom • Is beginning to dread going to school

The Kip McGrath approach to maths teaching: A short initial assessment finds where each student is in their learning journey. It is designed to show what they can do as well as what they cannot. At Kip McGrath the aim is to provide a low-pressure environment and teach each child from their unique starting point, not according to their age or year group. With lessons focusing first on core arithmetic skills, ensuring that strong written calculation methods are developed. Other maths activities are designed to help students see and explore links within and between maths topics.

Try talking to your child’s teacher. They may be able to offer further advice or put measures in place to help your child at school.

Kip McGrath tutors talk about and explicitly teach place value so that students begin to understand the number system. This helps them to cope with many different aspects of maths and improves their confidence.

Sadly, there are some children who still do not progress and may have dyscalculia. www.steve.chinn.co.uk is a useful website for information and advice.

Finally, Kip McGrath moves the student on when they are ready to progress. Topics are returned to regularly so that skills and knowledge are fully embedded into their long-term memory.
