A summer of fun at the Cathedral

Forget going overseas; visit the moon instead by joining Peterborough Cathedral for a summer that’s out of this world

Foreign sunny holidays may be out of reach this year but, at Peterborough Cathedral, your family could be ‘walking on the moon’ this summer. Through 17 July–31 October, the Cathedral is hosting a giant representation of the lunar surface entitled One Small Step, created by renowned sculptor and artist Peter Walker using imagery from NASA. The 36m x 7m art installation was originally created to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing in 2019. Visitors are able to see all the details and craters of the lunar terrain and be able to walk on it. You can even locate the place where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made their Apollo 11 landing in 1969 – a great place for a selfie! In addition, over the summer holidays, there are various events and activities including One Giant Leap, a family space-themed craft event from 2–7 August. Children will be able to build a parachute for a teddy bear, who can then bravely float to the ground from the high inside the Cathedral. Sessions are at 10am, 12pm and 2pm and tickets cost £6 (including a teddy bear to take home). To book see the weblink below. Entry to the exhibition itself is by donation (unless you are attending an event) and opening times are normally 10am–4pm Monday to Saturday, and 12–3pm on Sundays, with evening opening from 6.30–8.30pm on Thursdays during the school holidays.
