Welcome back!

What do you love about the summer holidays? Is it those special family days out, trips to the seaside or games in the garden? A couple of years ago it was the excitement of getting up in the middle of the night to either board a plane or reach Dover before the crowds. Although this year you’re more likely to be rising early to join the motorway en-route for a staycation, it’s still a time for making memories and enjoying new experiences and this issue is brimming with places to visit and destinations to see. Whether you are going East or West, up or down the A1, check out some of the highlights in this issue. Soon to open in October is the Chester House Estate in Northamptonshire, which promises to be history in the making as a family destination so plan for a visit later in the year. There’s the Shuttleworth Collection, which includes many acres to explore, aviation heritage to discover and also many air shows and family-led events. Go a little further afield and you can share in our new series, partnered by Hegarty Solicitors, called ‘Day Trippers’ and this issue features a trip to Sherwood Forest to see The Major Oak. Each issue will feature a new destination, sometimes local, sometimes a little out of our region. Of course, indoor play is back on the menu and look no further than Safari Play in Peterborough which is giving away a fabulous party competition prize. No doubt shopping will fill a fair bit of our time and do not forget back to school shoe shopping! Zebedee shoes (Oundle Road, Peterborough) and Gibbs shoes (Ely/ Spalding) are excellent destinations for great footwear. Shopping is much more of an experience nowadays and look no further than the Roar & Seek Dino event at Queensgate. Alternatively, take a trip to Springfields Outlet near Spalding to experience shopping outdoors. Family fun is guaranteed with Adventureland plus much more to see and do. Wishing you a great summer holiday and see you again on 1 October for more family fun!

Have a healthy, happy holiday in Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Make your child's summer one to remember, making new friends, enjoying fun activities, and learning about new food

20 years of Laserforce Help celebrate two decades of laser-tag in Peterborough by pre-booking your game today Laserforce, in Peterborough’s Brook St Arena, opened in 2001 with a state-ofthe-art laser-tag system and has continued to give players the best and latest tech in the game, which has come a long way in 20 years! From the heavy, first-generation battle suits that provided real-time updates to lighter, multi-coloured battle suits for multi-team games and even lighter lithiumbattery powered vests for younger players. Software upgrades have provided an animated live time score screen and improved audio and visual effects, whilst the multi-level arena has more interactive targets and beacons that deliver players bonus power-ups. Members can also compare mission stats online with players from around the world thanks to new connectivity. Martin Nash, Founder and Operator of Laserforce in Peterborough, said: “Running a business that provides fun and enjoyment to people of all ages is a privilege and after 20 years I still get a buzz when I see the smiles on people’s faces. In the past 20 years over 50,000 players have signed up to membership with over two million individual missions being played. It has been great to see older members return with their own children and they find it as much fun as when they first played. You are never too old to a play Laserforce.” Whilst Covid restrictions are still in place, there’s only a limited number of game slots each day to ensure a Covid-secure environment, so pre-booking on online is essential. www.laserforceuk.co.uk

WHERE BEING SMALLER COUNTS Start building a new future with University Centre Peterborough and attend its Open Days to see what degrees are on offer to put your career back on track Over the past year, the campus at University Centre Peterborough (UCP) has still been open for its students to study a degree locally, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic the campus could not be open to visitors – until now. With national restrictions being lifted, UCP are all set to welcome the public to their Open Days in July and August. UCP pride themselves on being able to offer a personal learning environment and recognise how important this is for mature students and parents of young children. Being able to fit a degree around family, work or personal commitments by studying in full days can make

it much easier to gain a degree to improve future careers prospects. As University Centre Peterborough is a smaller institution it has also been able to offer face-toface teaching on campus during the pandemic, unlike many larger universities in the UK that have had to move all their teaching online. As class sizes at UCP vary between ten and 30 people within generous classrooms, it has been safe to offer everyone at least one day a week of face-to-face learning on campus. As the majority of courses at UCP are timetabled two days a week, this means that all students have had at least 50% of their week in-person.

What financial help is there for you? Mature students are entitled to exactly the same tuition fee loans as school leavers going to university. Mature students can also apply for a maintenance loan of up to £9,488 per year (which helps with your cost of living) as well as accessing additional finance support such as a Childcare Grant (up to £179.62 per week for one child or up to £307.95 for two or more children), a Parents’ Learning Allowance (up to £1,821 per year) as well as cash bursaries.

As all courses were treated equally, it didn’t matter if students were studying more practical subjects like Biological Sciences, Forensic Investigation and Performing Arts or desk-based subjects like Business Management, English Literature and Sociology – everyone has had face-to-face teaching on campus and we hope this will continue. Students receive individual support from lecturers and staff and become part of its close community of students. As well as lectures, there are individual and group tutorials so students never feel there is no-one to speak to.

DAY TRIPPERS

Take a trip to the Major Oak... Editor of Term Times embarks on an imaginative adventure in search of the Major Oak and family fun within Sherwood Forest In search of a trip to discover something new, myself and the youngest member of the Term Times team headed along the Great North Road to Robin Hood country in Nottinghamshire. Sherwood Forest is a place of mystery and intrigue. Mention those two words to any child and he or she will instantly recall the famous names of Mr Hood’s infamous crew and, of course, the arch-enemy Sheriff of Nottingham. This woody delight is more than just a folk legend though, attracting more than 350,000 visitors a year and there is much to do for the whole family. Managed by the RSPB, on behalf of the Nottinghamshire County Council, the Sherwood Visitor Centre is situated upon entry to the pretty village of Edwinstowe. For £4 you can park your car and it’s a short walk to the main grounds of Sherwood Forest, which is an excellent start to your day. Trail guides are available and Wildlife Explorer Packs are also on hand for a small fee to hire. On entry, passing the amphitheatre where events are often held, our imagination was ignited with illustrated storyboards telling the tales of the

merry men and their encounters. On the look-out for Guy of Gisborne, we strode out into the dense wood ahead of us. With over 375 hectares to cover and energy to expend, we came across a series of well signposted trails to explore. Choosing the Giant’s Trail (only 0.75 miles) we followed a well-marked path ready to meet these mighty trees. Home of the ancient oak trees of Britain, this trail cleverly highlights these more than mature beasts. At varying points, certain oaks - many over 500 years old - are depicted through a carved spy hole that tells a story of each character. With each oak comes a name and a story to capture the imagination of what these trees would have seen and witnessed over the years. From Hollow Henry, Stag Head and Rotten Rodger (a spy of the Sheriff who was crushed inside this oak), these giants come to life in more ways than one. The trail finishes at the heart of the wood with Major Oak – the ultimate giant and estimated to be 1,000 years old. From its huge girth, with a trunk measuring around 10m to the 28m canopy of leaves, this giant produces up to 150,000 acorns

in a good year. With a multitude of picnic tables dotted around this part of the wood, we took our time and relaxed in the shade of this great tree. Rest assured for those who want to walk further there are trails that stretch a few more miles; post lunch, we picked up the four-mile Wildwood (Red) Trail. This excellent route allowed us to explore an abundance of wildlife within the deep, well-signposted woods. You could imagine knights on horseback searching for you-know-who. These trails will allow you to leave other visitors behind and turn back time to when Little John and Friar Tuck may have roamed there too. This is a day out that will engage all the family. Take a picnic, some energy and let the imagination run free. And, of course, if you spot him in the woods, keep ‘stum’ as the Sheriff is about! The visitor centre is open 10am–5pm from March to October and 10am–4:30pm from November to the end of February. More details www.visitsherwood.co.uk

PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL PROMOTION

A summer of fun at the Cathedral Forget going overseas; visit the moon instead by joining Peterborough Cathedral for a summer that’s out of this world Foreign sunny holidays may be out of reach this year but, at Peterborough Cathedral, your family could be ‘walking on the moon’ this summer. Through 17 July–31 October, the Cathedral is hosting a giant representation of the lunar surface entitled One Small Step, created by renowned sculptor and artist Peter Walker using imagery from NASA. The 36m x 7m art installation was originally created to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing in 2019. Visitors are able to see all the details and craters of the lunar terrain and be able to walk on it. You can even locate the place where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made their Apollo 11 landing in 1969 – a great place for a selfie!

In addition, over the summer holidays, there are various events and activities including One Giant Leap, a family space-themed craft event from 2–7 August. Children will be able to build a parachute for a teddy bear, who can then bravely float to the ground from the high inside the Cathedral. KIP MCGRATH PROMOTION

Why choose tuition at Kip McGrath? With extra tuition at the forefront of recovery in education, owner of Peterborough’s Kip McGrath centres Gill Terry discusses why they’re the right choice for your child. In the Government’s catch-up plans for schools, 1:1 and small group tuition have become the preferred method over initiatives such as extending the school day – but why? Money is surely a factor – extending the school day means paying overtime for teachers – but it is also because they know that tuition works. In our two Peterborough-based centres, Kip McGrath specialise in catch-up tuition and has tutored more than 600 students in the past five years. We know how to catch students up quickly and effectively. In maths, most students catch-up by one year in nine weeks. In English, most students can improve their reading age or comprehension age by a year for every six months of tuition. Of course, some students improve faster than others, but all will improve and this shows up in their school assessments, reports and their general confidence.

What do we do?

How do we do it?

• Provide catch-up tuition for students aged six - 16 years in maths and English. We have a range of days/times available across two centres.

• All of our tutors are qualified teachers who are then trained in the Kip McGrath methodology.

• Sessions run throughout August to prepare children for September. • Exam-focused tuition such as 11+, SATS, GCSE (Maths, English, Science), Functional Skills and school entrance exams. • Deliver mock 11+ assessments in verbal / non-verbal reasoning, maths and English. • Testing for Functional Skills Exams in Maths, English and ICT.

• We apply the Goldilocks principle: not too hard, not too simple, but just right. • Assess, monitor and adjust student’s lessons constantly. • We teach everything in small, easy-to-manage steps with students encouraged to work independently practising their new skill in the lesson and for homework. • Students receive timely feedback to improve their skills. • Teaching is tailored to individual needs and abilities.

• Students are encouraged to be confident, independent learners who have faith in their learning ability. • Support is offered to most students with individual academic or SEN needs. We are also able to advise parents on many SEN issues and often spot problems that schools have missed. • Parents are kept informed with termly reports and easy-to access weekly notes. • Using motivational techniques, students find they often achieve more than they initially thought possible. • We believe wholeheartedly that all students can and will improve.
