Welcome... Welcome to our Easter edition of Term Times magazine. The TT house is all about Easter this year as it’s the first time the Girl and Boy have decided to give up something for Lent. They are feverishly counting down the days until the sweet jar can be re-opened (there is still plenty of time for me to replenish anything that may have mysteriously vanished in the meantime!) I’ve been really impressed with their resilience, although there have been a few moments when they seem to have had a temporary memory lapse as to Lent. Fortunately, though, Mum has been constantly on hand to remind them both (popular as ever!) In this great issue, once again the National Trust are organising some fun Easter egg hunts in the local area and they’ve given us some tickets for a prize too! In addition, we are all about the water; with articles on water sports, wakeboarding, sailing and swimming. With so many opportunities to make a splash in the region, this is definitely something to consider as a leisure pursuit in the future. Once you have been ‘messing about in boats’, you will have worked up an appetite so what better than a guide to some of the area’s popular family-orientated restaurants followed by a wind down with one of the many book titles you can win. It’s all covered in this issue. Have a great Easter and see you all again on 7th May. All the best.

SING!

For over 20 years, this independent charity, run by a dedicated group of DBS-checked parent volunteers, has been offering exciting musical opportunities for young people from across the city and its catchment area.

As a learning destination for the ‘Children’s University’, the Young Singers continue to work to develop strong links with schools and the local community to produce mass choral events in Peterborough and create their own version

as well as accompanying the massed youth choir brought together by Peterborough Young Singers just for this event - in the concert’s grand finale.

Schools are already registering to take part in the 2015 project that culminates in a public performance at KingsGate Conference Centre on 11th July.

This year there is the opportunity for all enthusiastic singers to take part in this celebration of music. To take part in this event, all that is necessary is to regularly attend our rehearsals on a Saturday morning held at East Community Centre, Padholme Road, Peterborough PE1 5EN.

It is with great excitement that they welcome back Stringfever UK (www.stringfever.co.uk) who will be performing some of their own repertoire

r e t s a E

For further information, email: events@peterboroughyoungsingers.org.uk or website – www.peterboroughyoungsingers.org.uk - will also provide information about the Saturday morning rehearsal schedule. For any school wishing to register to take part, use the same email address shown above.

woolly wonders

Easter is always a very special time of the year at Church Farm at Stow Bardolph, near Downham Market, when visitors can see lots of new arrivals. Come along to see the new-born, woolly wonders in the Lambing Yard. There will be the chance to cuddle and bottle feed a little lamb - and you may even be lucky enough to see one being born. Easter also sees the arrival of the Easter chicks, cute, fluffy and the perfect size for children to hold. Why not have a go at the Easter Quiz Trail, with a small prize for everyone? Don’t forget to visit

the fabulous indoor play area and treat yourself to some tea and home-made cake and relax on the comfy sofas while the children play. There will also be all our other usual attractions, with pedal tractors, trampolines, straw playbarn, giant sandpit and much, much more. We will be at the Spring Fling at the Norfolk Showground in Norwich on Tuesday, 31st March. Come and say hello!

Life in the country Families can enjoy a fun-packed extravaganza about food, farming and the countryside at the Lincolnshire Showground on Sunday 29th March. The new Countryside Lincs event offers the chance to step into six different indoor and outdoor zones to make, bake and explore life on the farm. Countryside Lincs welcomes some of the local producers, crafters, farmers and businesses to one place to inspire young minds about Lincolnshire’s heritage. Watch traditional crafts people at work creating bug house hotels, candle-making, felting and yarnspinning. Be entertained by falconry demonstrations, a farrier at work and the parade of hounds. Take a trip to the Farmyard to meet Lincoln Red cows, Lincoln Longwool sheep, goats, shire horses, chickens, rabbits and guinea-pigs - and the farmers that care for them!

free workshops including the NFU ‘Let’s Talk Farming’ roadshow where you can meet Annabelle the ever-popular model dairy cow and you might even experience chicks hatching with The Happy Chick Company.

School charity run

See fresh bread being made from local flour and whizz up some fresh vegetable soups with Ruth from Wooden Spoon and Whisk.

Inspired by an ex-pupil they knew who had recently been diagnosed with cancer, children from Alderman Jacobs School in Whittlesey took part in a fun run in February to raise money for cancer research.

With six hours of non-stop indoor and outdoor entertainment, Countryside Lincs (10-4) is a must for everyone this Easter.

They organised, marshalled and co-ordinated the event in which every child was invited to run in their onesies.

Advance tickets are on sale from www.lincolnshireshowground.co.uk Tickets will also be available on the gate. There is free parking.

This run followed a cake sale they had arranged before Christmas and to bring their total to date to over £600. Lois Russell, Ben Peters and Lauren Hills from Year 6 managed

to fit in ‘the fine details’ between their lessons in order for the event to proceed. Their drive and persistence to see this through and their dedication to the event has left many staff at the school feeling very proud and are a fine example to us all.

A qualification to progress your career Riverside Training has been offering the CACHE Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services to students throughout Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. There has been a terrific response to this qualification that has six pathways. The qualification provides the skills and knowledge needed to manage practice and lead others in adult health and social care provision or in children and young people’s services. It has six pathways - three for adults and three for children and young people: • Management • Residential Services • Advanced Practice The Management pathway is suitable for Assistant Managers and Deputy Managers working in day or domiciliary services who are looking to progress their career. It is also appropriate for Managers who have not yet achieved a vocational qualification at this level. The Advanced Practice pathway is geared towards senior practitioners who would like to develop their career but wish to remain active practitioners in the management framework.

What are the entry requirements? Learners should be at least 19. It is also recommended they hold a Level 3 qualification or above in a related area. Do you need to be working to take the qualification? Learners will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement as they have to show competence in both knowledge and skills. How long does it take to complete? It can usually be completed within a year.

Training in Action

Over the past eight years, I have completed with Riverside Training a Level 4 in Children’s Care, Learning and Development and Level 5 in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People’s Services. During my training, I felt the support was well delivered. Before starting the courses, we had long discussions about the criteria and how much written work would be required. After talking to Riverside, I felt confident in being able to achieve the two different levels. Professional discussions were always completed when arranged and I was made to feel at ease. The support from Riverside built my confidence to be able to express myself within my role at Small-Saints Pre-School at Holbeach where we are continually updating our qualifications.

What related qualifications can you progress to?

Thanks to Riverside I can say I’m positive in my job and I have the confidence and knowledge to be able to take on other qualifications and move on to becoming a manager of a setting one day.

A degree in a related discipline.

Young people get their rewards Peterborough Children’s University’s graduation ceremony at the University Centre Peterborough saw 34 young people from schools across the city receive Children’s University certificates. Ranging from Undergraduate Silver Award (65+ hours) to Undergraduate Silver Degree (365+ hours). The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Peterborough, Councillor David Over, was in attendance. On that day and for the following week, the Children’s University manager visited five other schools in Peterborough to present youngsters with their Undergraduate Bronze Award (30+ hours). These students stood proudly in their caps and gowns as their success was celebrated amongst their peers. Over 128 young people received Children’s University certificates. Do you offer high quality learning opportunities for young people? If so and your organisation would like to find out more about becoming a learning destination please visit the national CU website www.childrensuniversity.co.uk or get in touch with the Peterborough Children’s University Manager by emailing: peterboroughcu@btinternet.com or call 01733 864 784.

The Children’s University strongly believes that all children can achieve given the right opportunities. Through its framework and utilising local activities, it aims to offer those opportunities. Peterborough is now well on its way to realising that aim by working with local providers to offer a range of learning opportunities to young people.

PETERBOROUGH TM

www.termtimes.ltd.uk TT 113.indd 13

The aim of the graduation ceremonies is to celebrate the young people’s achievements for the learning they choose to do. It is hoped that this recognition and celebration will increase the self-esteem and confidence of the students and encourage them to continue their learning journey.

A day in the life of a

Forest for Peterborough Project Officer Forest for Peterborough was launched in 2010 by the charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT). We aim to plant one tree for every person living in the city by 2030: a total of 180,000 trees! My role is fantastic because I get to create amazing woodland spaces. These areas will flourish in the future and create perfect wildlife habitats for insects, birds and mammals as well as homes for all the amazing types of fungi and plants that will grow within the eco system.

arrangements with landowners. Then I need to use the right equipment, such as spades, stakes, and tree guards to prevent the trees from being damaged by inquisitive rabbits or deer.

The project gives me the opportunity to work alongside some amazing people from all walks of life. With the planting season running from October to March, I arrange outdoor tree-planting days during this period that your family can come along to as volunteers.

To ensure the woodland flourishes in the future I select the right species of tree for the site, understanding the soil conditions and tree stock (whether to plant bare roots, whips, standards, small, medium or large specimens). Larger trees such as oaks need to be planted around 3-5 metres apart to allow space to grow.

I prepare for working outdoors in winter by wearing warm clothing and waterproofs. Health and safety guidelines are followed by using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Before planting, I do site surveys to check for power lines, gas and water and make appropriate

What’s so exciting about being part of the project is that together we can help build a patchwork of wildlife corridors across the city. The trees that are planted today will be around for your children’s children to enjoy and walk under – and that’s an amazing thought.

My name’s Simon Belham and I’m a Forest for Peterborough Project Officer.

m Why wakeboarding is fun! As you glide across the water for the first time, a smile will creep across your face you won’t be able to remove for the next few hours! Not only is wakeboarding great exercise it is also exhilarating. Wakeboarding is often described as ‘snowboarding on water’. You are attached to a board with a pair of ‘bindings’ or boots and travel across the water either behind a boat or being pulled by an overhead cable, which is what they have at Hannam’s Wake Hub. Wakeboarding is a new, fun sport that started around 20 years ago when water-skiers decided to try something different. Since then it has grown from strength to strength with wakeboarding facilities popping up all over the world. Although

it started off with wakeboarders riding behind a boat using the ‘wake’ of the boat to perform tricks, over the years cable tow facilities have become more popular due to their greater accessibility and cheaper price, as well as the use of a range of ‘obstacles’ such as ramps .

entertain and inspire. Wakeboarding will hopefully be an event in the 2020 Olympics so there could be some future local Olympians!

Hannam’s Wake Hub has a 100% success rate for teaching complete beginners, ranging from 6 year olds to 60 year olds, making it a sport that can involve the whole family.

You can book a party at Hannam’s Wake Hub for a fun-filled afternoon or you can have lessons to learn tricks that are very similar to snowboarding with ‘kickers’ or ramps on the water that you can use to get air for grabbing the board, spinning and flipping.

They also train some great British wakeboarders so there’s always someone out on the water to

If you enjoy being outside with friends, wakeboarding is a fantastic way to have some fun and learn new skills.

Getting kids into sailing Ask any child why they enjoy sailing, and you’ll find that fun and friendship are pretty much top of the list. Racing or playing games on the water and in all weathers, plus meeting lots of youngsters the same age, is winning combination. So it’s no surprise that for many sailing becomes not just a hobby, but a lifelong passion. Sailing also helps youngsters to develop a whole range of life skills, including keeping fit, and building confidence and self-esteem, and resilience and independence. Parents meanwhile find it’s a chance for them and their children to enjoy their spare time together, and many also see an improvement in school work which coincides with a growing interest in their offspring wanting to spend all their spare time sailing.

Some clubs run specially designed sessions just for kids or have some kind of kids club so it’s worth contacting them to see what they have to offer. Another option is to get involved with your local OnBoard club. OnBoard is the RYA’s grass roots programme which introduces sailing and windsurfing to young people aged 8 to 18 through schools, youth groups and RYA training centres. In the past year more than half a million youngsters have experienced the sport through OB with 50,000 enjoying sailing so much they have remained in the sport.

The basics can be learnt easily in a week or over a number of sessions, How do youngsters get started? it doesn’t take long for youngsters to be able to sail around a triangular You can find your nearest RYA course on their own. beach By Kate Chapman

let’s head to the

Spring is finally in the air – and I have to say it’s definitely one of my favourite times of the year. I can’t wait for the Easter holidays; I must confess I’m a spring and summer person and, as the weather normally is greatly improved, it’s time to start thinking about family days out. My little ones are three and four now and just love playing out in the fresh air – so trips to the zoo, theme parks, farm parks and any play park with swings and a slide are usually top of their wish list. But there’s one place they love to go more than anywhere else in the world - can you guess? Yep, the beach. And they’re not the only ones who enjoy feeling the sand between their toes and the smell of the fresh, sea air. There really is nothing like packing up a picnic, grabbing the buckets and spades and heading off down to the coast for the day. And we’re so lucky where we live, as there are loads of great beaches all within easy driving distance. In Lincolnshire, we have Skegness and Mablethorpe, while along the north Norfolk coast our favourites are Wells-next-the-Sea and Old Hunstanton - both unspoilt, with golden strips of sands stretching out as far as the eye can see. Before we’ve even unpacked any of our stuff, the little ones are running about collecting shells and pretty pebbles - as many as their buckets will hold. After a few minutes this usually gives way to the very important job of building sandcastles. We have competitions to see who can build the biggest and the most, although my little man is usually more interested in stamping on his sister’s - much to her annoyance. Once the castles are complete and the moat is dug, it’s time for a paddle and that in turn involves collecting sea water in their buckets and running up and down the beach to deposit it in the channel they’ve dug. An exercise they’d repeat all day I’m sure! All that running around soon sees them building up an appetite - so it’s cheese and ham sandwiches, crisps and cucumber sticks all round before the treat of an ice-cream from seller along the front. I don’t know what it is about picnics, but even the most mundane food seems to taste better when eaten outside! I have very fond memories of visiting the coast with my parents as a child - and nothing’s really changed. My mum has loads of photos of me building sandcastles, paddling and enjoying donkey rides when I was a tot and I think that’s the beauty of the seaside for a great day out. It’s so simplistic - there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy from games of football, throwing a Frisbee or flying a kite, a coastal walk or a nice picnic followed by a lie down with a good book. There really is nothing like a day at the beach – and, with all that fresh air, it certainly makes the children sleep well at night! * Kate Chapman is a freelance journalist whose work appears in a variety of newspapers and magazines.
