MEET RESCUE HORSES AND DONKEYS NOSE-TO-NOSE THIS SUMMER!

! earning by rote. That’s how we did it when we were at school, and that’s how the y are still done. There are songs, using fingers and some ind ividual little rhymes, but no new overall strategy for learnin g times tables. Until now that is. Susan Lucas from Huntin gdon has created Memo ry Owl’s Times Tables, a book and strategy that teaches chil dren their times tables up to 12s thr ough stories instead of num bers. The numbers have been turned into characters - 2 is a sho e, 7 is heaven, 48 is a naughty cra te - and stories have bee n created around each times table itself. For instance, Memo ry Owl watches stick and his bes t stick friend walk down a path, trip over and land in a huge, muddy stinky puddle, becoming dirty sticks. Or 36. The stories are stunningl y illustrated by Jake Tebbit, a seasoned illustrator, and appeal to children of all age s. The beauty of this metho d is that children as young as two can enjoy and remember the stories and older chil dren who find it difficult to learn number s by rote can work out tim es tables by remembering stories rath er than equations. In addition to the book, ava ilable on Amazon, there is a colouring book and flash cards available. A packag e for schools is available, with reduced price resources and online stories and quizzes to make classroom learning exciting. Available from Amazon at £12.99 (Paperback).

f you love horses, visit Redwings Horse Sanctuary; it’s the UK’s largest horse sanctuary with three visitor centres in East Anglia all of which are completely free to visit! In the past two years they have raised approximately £10,000 and last year won the Anna’s Hope Sports Award as the No. 1 donator to the charity of any sports organisation competing in the event. From pint-sized ponies to gentle giants, Redwings Ada Cole near Harlow, Essex, is home to over 70 wonderful horses and donkeys, including the charity’s newest and titchiest resident – little spotted foal Teeny Tucker! If donkeys are your favourite, Redwings Caldecott near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk is home to the Sanctuary’s largest donkey herd. Alternatively, perhaps you’d like to get up close and cuddly with a couple of impressive Shire horses – best friends Poppy and Gemma. For those wanting to explore the beautiful North Norfolk countryside, as well as making lots of horsey and donkey friends, Redwings Aylsham near Norwich welcomes visitors (and their dogs) to enjoy a peaceful wildlife walk around the onsite lakes brimming with birds and butterflies. All centres offer a fantastic free family day out with guided tours, horse-care demonstrations and a fun-filled summer schedule of activities for children to enjoy. There is plenty of open spaces for visitors to explore, before relaxing in their cafés serving light refreshments or perusing their range of gifts and souvenirs in their onsite shops; all profits from which go towards caring for the residents. If you would like to make a donation, please go to For more information visit www.redwings.org.uk or call 0870 040 0033.

EORGIAN TIMES
Mock trial: children will be invited to help re-create an actual Georgian trial from 1749.
Exactly what did street pedlars sell in Georgian England? What was the penalty for stealing and can you imagine what it was like to see the ancient ‘bull running’ through the streets of Stamford? Was it really ‘Horrible Histories’ living between 1714 and 1830 during the reigns of George I, George ll, George lll and George lV?
L
ooking ahead to 25-27 September, Stamford’s second Georgian Festival promises a step back in time to find out the answers to these questions. Tickets are now on sale for a weekend to remember. Mock trials will show just how hard the Georgian legal system was with a re-enactment in the Town Hall’s old courtroom of the 1749 trial of Elizabeth Taylor, flogged for stealing clothes.
Stamford’s infamous Bull Run will again take centre stage thanks to international carnival specialists Shademakers. Two ‘bulls’ will be on show, one in a carnival parade through the streets and the second on the Meadows for an evening of music and fireworks, a stirring finale to the Bull Run story. Schools and community groups are hosting professional artist workshops to involve them in Saturday’s procession.
Two actors from Galleries of Justice will stage a family show and the rest of the cast will be children from the audience! A packed programme of entertainment, all through the weekend, with music, spectacle, markets, talks, entertainment, fireworks and sheer fun has been unveiled by organisers South Kesteven District Council. Highlights will include a return for the ever-popular Horrible Histories, with a new Barmy Britain show direct from London’s West End.
Horrible Histories Theatre Company and character actor John White will also be visiting classrooms. Markets will fill the streets on both weekend days, with encampments and Georgian traders on the Meadows. The Town Hall will be open for tours to show off its unrivalled collection of civic memorabilia. Weekend activities include a fashion show, walking tours, antique book fair, organ recital at Burghley House and a patchwork and quilting workshop to stitch a festival legacy.

Keep Tiddy Mun happy at OuseFest!
T
he draining of the Fens over 350 years ago made Tiddy Mun very angry and when Tiddy Mun was angry, all kinds of disasters happened. The Fen people tried their hardest to keep Tiddy Mun happy by throwing water into the dykes and chanting to him. His call is said to still be heard in the cry of the lapwing as it makes its way across the Ouse Washes and the Fens. You can hear lots more fascinating stories about the Fens and learn about lapwings and other creatures living in the Ouse Washes during this year’s exciting OuseFest supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Between Monday, 20 July and Sunday, 2 August, there will be a whole fortnight of over 50 local events celebrating everything that makes the Ouse Washes landscape and surrounding Fenland area great! Have incredible wildlife encounters on a Wetland Safari, explore our local history on a Museums Trail, uncover ancient life on a Community Archaeology Dig and let off steam at one
of the Family Fun Days happening across the area. There is sure to be something for all ages! At the OuseFest Fun Day Extravaganza at Mepal Outdoor Centre on Saturday, 25 July, take part in an adventurous RSPB Scavenger Hunt, get creative with a craft workshop, dissect a pellet with the Barn Owl Conservation network or relax in the trees with some captivating story-telling by Michael Rouse. There will also be Trust Trail activities, music, face painting, a cinema room to unwind in and much more. On Tuesday, 28 July, check out OuseFest at Denver Sluice hosted by the Environment Agency. It’s a huge festival celebrating the site that keeps the whole area from flooding. There will be boat trips, rowing taster sessions and the famous eel and fish tank, allowing you to get up close to the intriguing creatures. Plus, there will be a re-enactment of the Victorian Flat Earth Trials with Cambridge Archaeological Unit.

Tiddy Mun was a tiny bog spirit who controlled the waters and mists of the Fens. He had long, tangled white hair, a matted white beard and wore a grey gown to make himself invisible at dusk.

Eat like a RoMAN SOLDIER
RoMAN ArMY BreAd 450g Spelt flour (you can use modern wholemeal flour but make sure it is one for bread-making) 1 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoon olive oil 15g yeast 400ml warm water (35-40°C) 1 tablespoon honey
Many of you in school will have learnt about the Romans and how they influenced both our history and the way we live today. We thought it would be fun to follow a recipe Roman soldiers used to make their bread. Remember if you try this at home, ask an adult for permission and help before embarking on this historical culinary journey.
T
he Roman army was divided into legions. Each legion had 10 cohorts: one ‘double strength’ cohort of 800 men, considered the best men in the legion, and five ordinary cohorts of 480 men. These were divided into centuries commanded by a Centurion. Although ‘century’ means 100, it was in fact 80 men. These men were further divided into groups of eight who did everything together. This was called a contubernium. They trained together, marched together, fought together and ate and slept together. There was no central ‘mess’ (the military word for dining hall) and so these men had to cook together too. After marching all day and covering about 20 miles carrying all their personal equipment like clothes, armour, weapons, sleeping roll and food, if they were in enemy territory they would
have to build a wooden fort. Their tents and heavy equipment would be carried in wagons or on mules. This would include the quern, a grindstone for making wheat into flour. Whilst most of the men were working on the fort, a few of them would be starting to cook a meal. They were given rations (food provided from a central store) of grains like wheat and barley as well as meat, bacon, olive oil and wine. If possible, they would hunt for animals such as hares or deer to make into tasty stews. They would bake their bread in the fire. The recipe on the right is for the sort of bread they made. Why don’t you have a go at making it?

1
Place the flour in a large mixing bowl and rub in the oil and salt.
2
Blend the yeast and honey into half the water and leave until it bubbles. Then roughly mix into the flour.
3
Mix the soft dough vigorously for four minutes using a wooden spoon.
4
Grease a large baking tray and dust with flour. Turn out the dough in one piece onto the baking tray and dust with flour.
5
Leave to rise in a warm place for 2030 minutes until the dough has risen to about twice its size.
6
Cook in an oven pre-heated to 180°C, 370°F for 35 minutes. A fully cooked loaf will sound hollow underneath. Cool loaf on a wire rack.

GEOCACHING! As summer is here, we are all very keen on getting out and about as much as possible. Amanda Stacey recommends Geocaching.
B
efore we had children, both TT Man and I were keen walkers. Well I say keen, he walked the 45-mile North Norfolk coast path over the course of a weekend whilst I was doing my bit by keeping the local retail establishments healthy. However, with the arrival of our brood of two, walking was initially tricky, unless armed with our trusty child scaffolding contraption, and later virtually impossible as both of our babes struggled with the eternal dilemma of walking, therefore wanted to be carried for the other 95 per cent of the time. A couple of years ago we stumbled across a great way of making walking more interesting for the kids and it’s been such a success that it has been known for us to even go out for a walk in winter. This magical elixir is something you might have heard about already – the global phenomenon known as Geocaching. In order to go Geocaching, you will need a GPS device and an internet connection, although to be honest, we normally manage with my trusty smartphone and the official Geocaching app. Geocaching is described as ‘real-world, outdoor treasure-hunting game using GPSenabled devices’. Basically a ‘cache’ is a box hidden by another Geocacher in a particular location. The cache creator then records the coordinates of the cache’s location onto the site and it can then be found! Caches can vary in size from a ‘micro’, about one centimetre long, up to really rather large containers. Both of these will have something in common in that they will have
some sort of log book in which you can record your find with the date and your Geocache name. In the larger boxes there are often a variety of different objects left by other members of the Geocaching community. The rule for these objects is that you are welcome to take from a cache, but you must replace whatever you take with something of equal or greater value, as this keeps the game alive! If you are really lucky you might find a ‘trackable’. A trackable is an object, often something like a token with a code on it, that has a particular mission – for example to travel coast to coast or to go to each country in Europe. It is your responsibility to move it from one cache to another to help it along its way and ideally to record this onto the website. To keep the game fun and the caches safe from being destroyed or removed, the Geocaching community likes to keep the game secretive and asks that you access the caches quietly, hiding what you are doing from non-Geocachers, referred to as ‘Muggles’! Anyway that’s all the technical bits over but, in short, it’s a great way to get outdoors and we are totally spoilt for the number and variety of caches in the area. In Cambridge and Peterborough there are some great city caches, hidden away in awkward spots and, out in the countryside, there are a number of cache trails which can be chained together into a decent length walk. So what are you waiting for? Remember to take a pencil, be on the lookout for Muggles and go discover Geocaching!
for a Geocaching adventure:
Great local Geocaching locations: Barnwell Country Park – A really nice loop with some very cleverly hidden caches. Oundle – A really good variety of caches. Cambridge – Get your thinking cap on for some really tricky caches, but then what would we expect?
On the official Geocaching website there is lots of information about how to get started, some great videos explaining what this odd activity involves and where you log your successful finds. www.Geocaching.com This site links to the official site but enables you to search for a trail of a number of caches, perfect for planning a walk around! www.geocachetrails.com Take a pencil! The tiny micro caches don’t have room for one of their own.

CHILDCARE S
TRAINING SPECIALISTS Riverside Training is an independent training provider.
o how does an independent training provider compare with the larger colleges in the area? "We are large enough to meet the training requirements of childcare providers," explained owner, Suzie Bulbeck, "yet we are small enough to care. We can be flexible in how we provide the training, tailoring it to individual needs.’"Clearly, this approach works as their learners achieve outstanding results. Riverside Training offers QCF qualifications and Apprenticeships in Children and Young Peoples Workforce, including the new Early Years Educator, Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools and management awards at centres throughout East Anglia and the Midlands. Many of their courses may attract local or national government funding. With so many training companies and colleges clamouring for business, it’s increasingly important for childcare employers to make sure they obtain the best possible training for their staff.
How can you be certain of the quality of training? Well, CACHE is the national awarding body for children and adult care. In December 2014 they carried out a Quality Assurance and Risk Assessment Inspection and awarded Riverside Training an excellent grade one. In addition to the quality of training, it’s the personal touch that makes Riverside Training so special and this is reflected

in the many thank-you letters from individuals and organisations. "First-class training for staff.’"This is how Rachel Beresford of Munchkins Kindergarten Ltd spoke of Riverside Training. "I first used Riverside Training in 2006 as I needed to gain my Level 3 qualification to open my own day nursery. Suzie and her team supported me so well that I completed this within my time-frame ready for the opening of my nursery", said Rachel. "Munchkin’s Kindergarten Ltd has now been successfully trading for the last 8 years starting with one building for all our children. "We have used Riverside Training for all of our apprentices, mature learners and to upgrade qualifications over the last 8 years and have always been totally satisfied with the service both myself as an employer and my learning practitioners receive from them – so much so that I have just completed my Level 5 qualification. Suzie also assists in finding suitable staff for my nursery to meet with the growing demand of qualified people I require for the smooth running of my nursery."
The demand fo r qualified ch ildcare worke and teaching rs assistants has never been greater, so whe ther you’re an individual looking to gain a new qualifica employer seek tion or an ing to train yo ur staff, now’s the time to sig n up for a trai ning course with a quality , successful, sp ecialist traini provider for al ng l your training .

Exploring underwater worlds Many of us remember pond-dipping as children, even if it was mostly the sweeping of a net in water that was the main attraction. By Emma Brand
B
ut some parents can find the idea of pond-dipping with children daunting – can we remember how to do it and what if we find something we know nothing about? Places like WWT Welney Wetland Centre are great for introducing you to this fantastic experience. All the equipment is provided, including identification charts, and the platforms offer safe places to get to the water’s edge. The anticipation of what you might find builds as you grab your net and tray. Putting some water into the tray first means your creatures have somewhere safe to be held in, as lots of these creatures breathe through the water. Making a figure of eight shape with your net in the water gets the best results. It’s best not to go too deep as any silt will cloud your tray. When you first wash the contents of your net into the tray it can seem like all you have caught is pond weed but if you let it settle
and take a closer look you will soon see a tray teeming with life. At the bottom of your tray you may find leeches and flatworms sliding around as well as pond snails. You should also find a water louse or two. These are similar to wood lice and they love munching on the decaying plant matter at the bottom of the pond. Flitting about amongst the weed you are likely to find dragonfly, damselfly or mayfly nymphs. The latter two have leaf-shaped gills at the end of their body. Not all underwater creatures can breathe beneath the surface, water spiders and several beetle species take a bubble of air down with them giving them a shiny appearance. Water scorpions have a long straw-shaped tail which is actually a snorkel as they breathe through their bottoms! There are many more creatures to find, so why don’t you have a go at ponddipping this summer!
WWT Welney Wetland Centre guided activities . . . Pond-dipping is available everyday at WWT Welney Wetland Centre in the summer. There are guided sessions every Wednesday during the school summer holidays when kids go free with full paying adults. Look out for other guided activities during Ouse Fest, Monday, 20 July – Sunday, 2 August and at the Wetland safari events, Sunday, 26 July & Monday, 31 August. Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge 2015 All children aged 4-11 years are invited to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge at Peterborough Libraries. The theme for 2015 is ‘Record Breakers’.
C
hildren will be able to sign up for the Challenge at any Peterborough library from Saturday, 11 July. Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer holidays. The annual Summer Reading Challenge in libraries helps children to keep up their reading skills and confidence. Simply sign up at a local city library, and then read at least six library books of your choice throughout the Summer holidays, collecting stickers and other incentives along the way – all for FREE. The theme for 2015 will be linked to Guinness World RecordsTM, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2015. Guinness World Records annual books are library favourites too so there will be plenty to choose from. Children can read whatever they like – fact books, joke books, picture books, even listen to audio books – just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Every time children finish a book they get stickers and rewards and there’s a certificate for everyone who finishes. The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all school children and is designed for all reading abilities. It is produced by the Reading Agency in association with Guinness World RecordsTM and delivered by libraries.

Picnic Paradise
I
was brought up on the wonderful books of Enid Blyton - the Famous Five and Secret Seven were particular favourites along with her Adventure series. How I longed to be part of one her jolly little gangs - they always seemed to have such a fantastic time roaming the countryside on their bikes, camping out, foiling the baddies and saving the day. And, of course, enjoying the most amazing picnics! I can recall even now the lashings of ginger beer, tasty ham sandwiches, home-made scones and jam, scotch eggs and sausage rolls donated by friendly farmer’s wives along their way. It’s making my mouth water just thinking about them. But why is it food - and it doesn’t matter what it is - tastes so much better when eaten outside on a picnic? And even better still when that picnic is on the beach? As soon as the sun peeps its head out from behind the clouds,
my two little ones are asking - or rather demanding - to picnic in the garden at lunchtime instead of eating their sandwiches around the kitchen table, even more so if they’re having friends round. And I never have the heart to deny them - it’s just way more fun throwing down the picnic rug and, when the sun is shining, everyone seems to be in a much better mood. But it doesn’t end there. If we’re heading out for the day, they always want to me to pack up a feast to eat while we’re there, especially if we’re driving to the coast. I must confess a picnic on the beach is one of my favourite ways to while away a few hours - you can’t beat it. Well, as long as there are no pesky seagulls or giant wasps hovering overhead. These little critters always seem to know when you’re about to crack open the lunchboxes - and

we’ve had one or two near-misses with some dive-bombing birds in recent times. But even these, coupled with the odd bit of sand in amongst the sandwiches, can never dampen our spirits when a picnic is in the offing. As I said earlier, it doesn’t matter what we’re having – even curled up cheese sandwiches taste good when you have the wind in your hair and sun on your face. It’s just a fact of life. And even if the sun doesn’t shine this summer, that won’t stop us enjoying a lunchtime snack in style - we’ve been known to throw the rug on the kitchen floor and make do with an indoor version on more than one occasion. But that doesn’t mean we won’t be keeping our fingers crossed for plenty of sun though! Here’s to lots of happy picnics everyone!

ake a trip less than two hours from Term Times territory (quicker on a Nimbus 2000) and you will arrive at the magical attraction that is the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. Having pre-booked since Christmas, our slot of 1.30pm was not going to be missed, so we decided to stay at the Holiday Inn close by in Hemel Hempstead – a location that provides family packages and includes breakfast at affordable rates, with the additional benefit of a pool! On entry, we were greeted by some of the Wizard’s chess pieces and directed to the start of our tour. It is not a tour as you would know it. After the initial introduction from the guide, we were seated in a cinema to watch a five-minute whirlwind film of what was involved and who put these films together. Who better to open this journey than Harry, Hermione and Ron themselves, explaining how the film sets became a home from home for them for so long and how the staff became more like family. Take a peek at the first film to remember how young they were when it all started! After the film, we were welcomed through the doors of Hogwarts, directly into the Great Hall. Picture Nearly Headless Nick floating over the school’s tables, each resplendent with the four house's colours and crests, really allowing you to feel as if it is your turn next with the Sorting Hat. At the Great Hall you can really start to appreciate the scale and hard work that went into each production. The intricate detail of the scenery, props and costumes on display is just staggering but it all enabled us to believe in the magical wonderland created from the work of JK Rowling. Onwards we travelled at our own pace searching for golden snitches and keeping a look out for ‘He who must not be named’, travelling from set to set, in awe of characters, experiencing the rooms and potions we have loved over the last 11 years. Handy screens are sited to remind you of the films and actors who participated in each set ... as well as revealing some of the wizardry that went into making Hogwarts so impressive. Everyone has a favourite film, or chapter of a book, but our family were firmly split between flying over the Thames on broomsticks and the original steaming Hogwarts Express, located of course on Platform 9¾. Having a sweet tooth, I stopped the Honeydukes Express but, alas, the Bertie Botts beans were all gone. Take your time learning about the construction of the costumes and magical creatures, with our own local lad Professor Flitwick (Warwick Davis) explaining the creature and mask design from an actor’s perspective. And, with the exception of Death Eaters, the shops at the end are a labyrinth of goodies but take your money out of Gringotts as the wands do not come cheap. Enjoy and, for you non-believing Muggles out there, read the books first and you will understand. For information on how to book a tour, visit www.wbstudiotour.co.uk
