Windscreen reduce dazzle from the winter sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Ask your garage to check if wiper blades need renewing.

Screen wash use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Carry de-icer with you.

Locks and door seals help prevent doors freezing shut with a thin coat of Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of WD-40 in locks will help stop them freezing.

Permanent memorial for Spitfire pilot A permanent memorial to Pilot Officer Harold Penketh has been unveiled at Holme Lode, on the Great Fen this autumn

F

ollowing on from the excavation of the pilot officer’s crashed Spitfire in October 2015, the memorial service was a fitting tribute to the 20-year-old pilot who lost his life in November 1940, on a flight training mission.

The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire commissioned a plaque set in Clipsham stone, with an information board nearby, detailing the history of the incident and of pilot Harold Penketh. The stone has been kindly donated by the Fenland Trust with the plaque carved by local stonemason Mark Oliver of Fenland Stoneworks.

The event was attended by Penketh family relatives who made contact with the Wildlife Trust BCN during the excavation week after

a family member read about the dig via TV news (previous searches made by the Ministry of Defence had not been able to trace any family).

Recovered sections of the plane have now been washed and cleaned of 75 years of aviation fuel and earth by local volunteer groups and painstakingly reassembled, as far as is possible,

When a heart stops, every second counts Macmillan coffee morning is a huge success!

A Macmillan coffee morning, held at Stanground Baptist Church at the end of September, raised an impressive total of £66 for the national cancer charity.

It was so busy that extra tables had to be set out, but fortunately there were enough delicious homemade cakes to feed everyone who attended and kindly made a donation. There were both new and familiar faces, with plenty of conversation and catching-up with friends and neighbours.

The annual event is part of the regular community coffee mornings held at Stanground Baptist Church and run by church members Rachel, Marion, David and Hayley. They take place on alternate Thursday mornings from

10-12 am throughout the year, including school holidays and everyone is welcome, including children. They offer a friendly and relaxed place to enjoy a variety of mouth-watering, home-made cakes and hot drinks and a chance to chat and make new friends. There is no charge for refreshments, but donations can be made, which are divided between the church and local charities. At the end of each year the people attending the coffee morning vote for their favourite charities and funds are shared between them.

Your crucial CPR-athon Guide A cardiac arrest happens when your heart stops pumping blood around your body. If someone has suddenly collapsed, is not breathing normally and is unresponsive, they are inn cardiac arrest.

Bystanding CPR can increase the survival rate of a cardiac arrest victim by 60% It’s the compressions that count and its all about the rhythm.

Take turns with somebody else to provide CPR, so you can both rest in between.

CPR buys time for the patient before the emergency services arrive.

When a heart stops beating, just 3 minutes can be the difference between life and death.

Cardiac arrests can strike anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Fewer than 1 in 5 people who suffer a survivable cardiac arrest receive the life-saving intervention they need, you can help change that.

What you can do when someone goes into cardiac arrest 1. Check whether the victim can hear you and its alert, CALL 999 if you’re on your own, or make sure another bystander is doing so.

2. If they are unresponsive, tilt their head back with two fingers under the chin.

3. Look listen and feel for breathing, for 10 seconds.

4. If they are not breathing, start compressions on the centre of the chest and push hard and fast.

5. Continue to do this until help arrives or the patient recovers.

Festival of Remembrance Sunday 13 November

Sing for your heart this Christmas it’s good for you National charity Heart Research UK is calling for choirs, schools, bands, singers and pubs up and down the country to support its Sing for your Heart campaign this winter.

Research has shown that singing is good for the heart and that is why Heart Research UK has chosen this as a fun idea for people to take on during the festive period and to raise money for the great work that they do.

If you’re a choir, you could book a venue or sing in your local supermarket and donate a percentage of the tickets sales or pass around a collection bucket to raise money to Heart Research UK. If you’re a school you could turn your annual nativity play into a Sing for your Heart event and ask parents to

make a donation or sell tickets.

If you’re an individual who loves singing or in a band, why not put on a gig and donate a percentage of the proceeds.

If you work at a pub or you’re a regular at your local, why not advertise to host a sing-a-long and get everyone in your area together during Christmas week to sing festive songs and pass round a collection bucket. You could host it in the pub, in the car park all wrapped up or on the village green.

Heart Research UK doesn’t mind how you organise it or how you raise

the money – the choice is yours.

The charity just wants everyone singing for their hearts this Christmas and raising money to help fund the prevention, treatment and cure of heart disease.

The Street Parties The Second World War officially ended on the 8 May 1945 with Germany finally being defeated.

Great Britain went ecstatic!

At just 8 years of age, along with literally thousands of youngsters all over the country, I had known little else but the war years. As every city, town, village and the smallest of hamlets went to celebrate, Stanground was no exception.

Street parties were arranged everywhere for the children.

I have many vivid memories of much happiness on such a memorable day, with the church bells ringing in celebration. The 6 years of war were over and the whole atmosphere in Stanground was a real occasion and a joy to behold.

In Church Street, where I was born, the tables and chairs were situated half way along the street with about 30 children in attendance all being spoilt by our mothers who were serving up delicious sandwiches and cakes with many other wonderful foods.

Just for that one day only, it seemed that food rationing didn’t apply anymore. All of us children couldn’t believe our luck as we tucked in as if we were making up for lost time and with Hitler defeated it was more than just a treat. Entertainment was laid on with countless games and prizes to be won.

At last we were all having fun with no more air –raid sirens or shelters to disturb our sleep.

Some husbands and sons who were called up for war gave up their lives and never returned home.

This happened throughout the country and although our soldiers, airman and sailors surviving the war were greeted with much enthusiasm and gratitude it was not the same for those who never returned home.

So it was also a time of great sadness and to remember those who didn’t return, as well as to join the country in celebration.

Changes for Landlords of Buy-to-Let Properties: From April 2017 the way landlords receive tax relief on their mortgage or loan interest will change. Landlords will no longer be able to deduct their mortgage interest relief from rental income before calculating their tax liability. Instead they will get a tax credit equivalent to 20% basic rate tax on the interest amount. All mortgage interest tax relief will gradually be cut back to 20% between 2017 and 2020.

In addition to this if they receive child benefit they will have to pay an additional charge as their income level subject to tax will have increased.

One way around this could be to incorporate a limited company but many factors have to be taken into account and professional advice should be sought before doing so.

A landlord could also transfer ownership of the property to a spouse or partner who is a lower rate tax payer, but again there are CGT implications to consider before doing so.

The generous wear and tear allowance on furnished lettings was abolished in April 2016. Landlords will now be able to claim relief on a replacement basis, but no relief is available for the initial expenditure.

Restrictions will also apply to integral fixtures.

Landlords providing furnished holiday accommodation will not be affected by these changes and they will continue to receive relief under the capital allowance regime.

Miss Catwalk Perfect UK I am a local Stanground resident and live on the Cardea estate and I would like to share my story with you of how I have recently become Miss Catwalk Perfect.

I was given the title of Miss Catwalk Perfect Peterborough back in May 2016. I had been getting involved in my local community by helping out at such events as Peterborough Vs Cancer celebrity football match, Sue Ryder’s annual summer fete and the Tour of Cambridgeshire. I’ve also been fundraising myself quite a lot and some of my successful fundraising has been collecting toiletries for our local Women’s Aid, putting on a ladies’ night in aid of British Heart Foundation & Sue Ryder, plus running at the Greyhounds for British Heart Foundation!

It’s safe to say I’ve been busy building up to the final. At the final my hard work paid off and I won Miss Charity, Miss Publicity & Miss Congeniality meaning that I won the overall title of Miss Catwalk Perfect UK, competing against other girls representing their city.

I’m very overwhelmed and I want to thank everyone who has supported me through my journey.

I’m now looking forward to a year of continued hard work, appearances and supporting my community.

Mobile library I would just like to remind readers that the mobile library visits the Cardea area of Stanground on a 4 weekly cycle Ray Bisby, Local councillor outside the primary school.

The visits are usually 9.30 - 11.30 am on a Saturday morning.

Future visits are 29 October, 26 November and 24 December. You can sign up on your first visit and start to take out books.

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School September has been a busy month at Little Acorns; we have many new children who we have welcomed to the nursery, together with their families.

The babies have been enjoying the change in seasons, they have been exploring the leaves in the garden which are now falling from the trees and they have made autumn pictures using their hand and foot prints.

Our toddlers and pre-school have enjoyed taking part in ‘The Little Acorns Bake Off.’ They have made different treats throughout the week which they have had for their snacks and also taken home for their families.

The Pre-school has been out in the village for a nature walk where they collected conkers, leaves and twigs, they have also been learning about road safety.

Awards galore for proud Pumas pack Local youth football club Park Farm Pumas have been showered with accolades this week across social media and County FA Twitter feeds as they picked up the 2016 McDonalds community award for Respect & Fair Play.

The Huntingdonshire County award is nominated by the local leagues in the catchment area and a panel examines nominations and takes input from a variety of sources before coming to a decision.

Representatives from the club went to St Neots Town FC to collect the award in a special ceremony hosted by the Huntingdonshire FA officials. The club were also nominated for the Charter Standard club of the year 2016. An award that we won in 2015. This year that award went to our friends at ICA.

Later the same week the club received another award from the Peterborough Referees Association (PFA) in recognition of the Club’s hospitality & attitude to match day officials. Chairman of the PFA Rob Windle noted that “... Pumas are a club that consistently provides support to referees, especially young referees finding their feet in the game. It is no coincidence that league and PFA officials feel confident in placing young referees at Pumas’ games because we know they will be treated with

his decision was necessary due to the collapse of drainage that is underneath the playing surface across the whole site. This collapse left gullies where players were trapping their ankles during training and games.

Clearly the safety of players & members for the community using the fields must come before all else, hence why the decision was taken to stop all organised activity there.

The pitches at Cardea are being worked on to repair the damage. Our CCSA Vice chairman & resident groundsman Jason Holt is doing a fantastic job working with the council and is in daily communication with AMEY (Peterborough City Councils, (PCC) contractor) who to be fair have been very positive in their quick

reaction to the problems. Jason will be driving home the need to get this sorted at pace but with quality and ongoing maintenance support from PCC. An optimistic projection has us back using Cardea in December but a more realistic view is that we will not get back on there until the New Year.

Cardea Community Sports Association would like to offer our sincere apologies to our partners Park Farm Pumas & Cardea FC and to the wider community for any inconvenience caused as a result of the above decisions but I think we would all agree that the health and Safety of our users must be the primary concern. Stanground C of E Churches What a fantastic and well supported community day we had for St Michael’s Festival with something for everyone of all ages from 2-92!

The old fashioned sports were a particular hit, with our very own medals ceremony and even the National Anthem at the end. Huge thanks to everyone who came and took part in any way and all those organisations who helped, especially 3rd Nene Scouts, The Apple Cart, Sue Ryder, Stanground Baptist Church and St Michael’s Church School.

On the 31 October in St Michael’s there will be a very special party called a ‘Light Party’, with traditional autumn games, great food, and fun, for all children from reception to year 6. See Stanground CofE Churches Facebook page for more details,

For us, November means Remembrance, and as always St John’s Church will be hosting Stanground’s annual Remembrance Service on Sunday 13th at 10.30am when representatives from local organisations lay wreaths in memory of those who lost their lives in war and the names of Stanground fallen are read out.

Unique to us in Stanground is the tradition of everyone bringing a flower from their own garden to lay on the war memorial. It is a memorable and moving occasion and most of all a chance to pray together for peace.

Vivacity have announced a pilot for longer opening hours for Stanground Library Councillor Chris Harper Last year, Peterborough City Council invested significantly in the technology Open+ to allow self-service access to libraries and contribute towards the council’s budgetary savings. Whilst last year they were able to maintain opening hours in all Peterborough’s libraries,

they are now piloting extending the opening hours.

Stanground will now be open seven days a week, 8am-7pm.

The current staffed hours will be maintained for customers who prefer not to use the self-service technology.
